A retrospective study of the epidemiological and clinic-pathological aspects of cattle and buffaloes with degenerative joint disease (DJD) was conducted in the state of Pará, Brazil. From 1999 to 2014, eleven cattle and 24 buffaloes were evaluated. All the treated animals with suspected DJD underwent a clinical examination of the musculoskeletal system. In seven cattle and eight buffaloes with clinical signs of the disease postmortem examination was performed. The common clinical signs observed in both species were chronic lameness, stiff gait, postural changes, audible crackles in the affected limb, prolonged recumbency, difficulty in getting up and progressive weight loss. The lesions observed at necropsy were: irregular articular surfaces, erosion of the articular cartilage and the underlying bone tissue, and proliferation of the periarticular bone tissue with formation of osteophytes. The most affected joints in cattle and buffaloes wereof the hind limb. In buffaloes, the main predisposing factor to the onset of DJD was phosphorus deficiency. In cattle, defects of the anatomical conformation of the hind limbs, chronic trauma due to the activities performed, such as semen collection, and advanced age possibly contributed to the emergence of the disease.

Com base no histórico e em dados clínico-patológicos, bem como a inspeção das pastagens, foi estabelecido o diagnóstico de intoxicação por Cestrum laevigatum Schlecht. em uma mortandade de búfalos no município de Itaguaí, RJ. A intoxicação foi reproduzida em dois búfalos. Amostras de folhas dessecadas de C. laevigatum foram administradas manualmente por via oral a quatro bubalinos da raça Murrah, em doses únicas correspondentes a 20g/kg e 40g/kg da planta fresca. A dose correspondente a 40g/kg provocou o aparecimento dos sinais clínicos que consistiram principalmente em apatia, anorexia, ausência dos movimentos ruminais, dismetria, excitação e agressividade, e levaram à morte os dois animais em até 65 horas após a administração da planta. Dos outros dois bufalos que receberam a dose correspondente a de 20g/kg da planta fresca, um apresentou sinais clínicos, caracterizados principalmente por diminuição dos movimentos ruminais, e recuperou-se em 97h22min após a administração da planta; o outro não apresentou sinais clínicos. Os exames laboratoriais para avaliação bioquímica indicaram lesão hepática. Em um búfalo que morreu, as principais alterações macroscópicas foram fígado de cor alaranjada, com superfície externa e de corte com nítido aspecto de noz moscada; no outro, o fígado tinha a superfície externa e de corte de cor alaranjada, sem aspecto de noz moscada. Outras alterações encontradas nos dois búfalos foram leve edema da parede da vesícula biliar, endocárdio do ventrículo esquerdo com equimoses extensas e endocárdio do ventrículo direito com algumas petéquias; mucosa do abomaso levemente avermelhada e conteúdo levemente ressecado; intestino grosso com pouco conteúdo, levemente ressecado e envolto por muco. Os exames histopatológicos revelaram no fígado, acentuada necrose de coagulação dos hepatócitos nas zonas centrais e intermediárias dos lóbulos. Na periferia dessas regiões necrosadas observou-se um halo de hepatócitos com vacuolização.Based on the history and clinical and pathological data, as well as on inspection of the pastures, a mortality of buffaloes in the county of Itaguaí/RJ, Brazil, was diagnosed as poisoning by Cestrum laevigatum Schlecht., a plant of the Solanaceae family. The poisoning was reproduced in two buffaloes. Dried leaves of the shrub were administered by hand, in single doses corresponding to 20g/kg and 40g/kg of the fresh leaves, to four buffaloes of the Murrah breed. The dose corresponding to 40g/kg of the fresh leaves caused signs of poisoning, as apathy, anorexia, absence of rumen movements, dysmetria, excitement and aggressiveness, followed by death of the two buffaloes within 65 hours after administration. From the two buffaloes that received the corresponding dose of 20g/kg of the fresh plant, one presented clinical signs characterized mainly by decrease of the rumen movements, but recovered 97h22min after the administration; the other buffalo did not show symptoms of poisoning. Laboratory analyses for biochemical evaluation accused hepatic alterations. In one buffalo that died, the main macroscopic finding was an orange liver with a clear nutmeg appearance; in the second buffalo, the orange liver had no nutmeg appearance. Other alterations found in these two buffaloes were slight edema of the gall bladder wall, a slightly reddish mucous membrane of the abomasum, extensive echymoses in the endocard of the left ventricle and few petechiae in the endocard of the right ventricle; the abomasum content was slightly dry, and the large intestine had little and slightly dry contents wrapped by mucus. Histopatological examination revealed severe coagulative necrosis of the liver parenchyma in the centrolobular and intermediate lobular areas, with a halo of vacuolated hepatocytes at the periphery of the necrotic areas.

O estudo foi realizado com os objetivos de estabelecer a sensibilidade dos búfalos a Palicourea juruana e agregar novos dados sobre a toxidez dessa planta para bovinos. Embora os quadros clínico-patológicos tenham sido semelhantes, a comparação das doses letais para búfalos (entre 1 e 2 g/kg) e para bovinos (0,25 g/kg) estabelece o búfalo como pelo menos quatro vezes mais resistente. Em experimentos realizados 10 anos antes - com amostras de P. juruana coletadas na mesma fazenda no Pará, em julho de 1993, início da época de seca, portanto apenas 2 meses mais tarde do que os agora realizados em maio de 2003 - a dose letal para bovinos foi de 2 g/kg. Não encontramos explicação para a toxicidade extremamente elevada da planta verificada nesse estudo.An experimental study was performed to establish the toxicity of Palicourea juruana for buffaloes and to add new data on the toxicity of this plant for cattle. The clinical and pathological pictures were similar, but a comparison of the lethal doses for buffaloes (1-2g/kg) and cattle (0.25g/kg) shows that the buffalo is at least 4 times more resistant. In experiments performed 10 years earlier with the fresh leaves - collected on the same farm in July, at the beginning of the dry season, only 2 months later than in this second experimental series - the lethal dose for cattle was 2 g/kg. No explanation was found for the extremely high toxicity of the plant observed in the present study.

Descreve-se um surto de tétano em búfalos da raça Murrah em uma propriedade situada no município de São Caetano de Odivelas, localizado na região metropolitana de Belém, estado do Pará. Do rebanho de 250 bubalinos, 80 animais foram vacinados contra raiva por via intramuscular na região da garupa. Em um período de 15 a 19 dias após a vacinação quatro animais adoeceram, um morreu com dois dias de evolução, um foi eutanasiado in extremis no sétimo dia após o início dos sinais clínicos e os demais se recuperaram após tratamento. Nos bubalinos, o primeiro sinal clínico observado foi o prolapso da terceira pálpebra, em especial quando o animal era estimulado, seguido por andar rígido, manifestado por dificuldade de flexão dos membros e permanência em decúbito lateral com os membros estendidos, pálpebras muito abertas, sialorréia, hiperexcitabilidade, orelhas eretas, leve trismo e acúmulo de alimento na cavidade oral. À necropsia foi evidenciada uma área de coloração amarelada com presença de exsudação purulenta na musculatura da região da garupa, local de aplicação da vacina. Ao exame histopatológico não foram evidenciadas alterações significativas. Em dois animais foi realizado tratamento com penicilina por via intramuscular e soro antitetânico por via intramuscular e sub-aracnóide; após duas semanas esses animais se recuperaram. Diante do quadro clínico, dos dados epidemiológicos e da ausência de lesões histológicas foi feito o diagnóstico de tétano. Concluiu-se que o tétano é uma doença a ser considerada na bubalinocultura no Brasil. A infecção, provavelmente ocorreu durante o procedimento de vacinação, através injeções intramusculares utilizando agulhas contaminadas.An outbreak of tetanus in Murrah buffaloes in Belém, state of Pará, Brazil, is described. The outbreak was observed in a flock of 250 buffaloes, 80 of which were vaccinated intra-muscularly in the croup against rabies. Four buffaloes fell ill 15 to 19 days after vaccination, one died after a clinical course of 2 days, one was submitted to euthanasia in extremis on the 7th day after the onset of symptoms, and two others recovered within 2 weeks after treatment with penicillin for 4 days and anti-tetanic serum. The first symptoms observed were prolapse of the third eyelid, especially when the animal was stimulated, followed by a rigid walk, as difficulty in inflexing the members and lateral recumbence with the members extended, besides very open eyelids, sialorrhea, hyperexcitability, erect ears and slight lockjaw, and food accumulation in the oral cavity. At post-mortem examination was found a focus of yellowish pus in the croup muscles, where the vaccine had been applied. At histopathology no significant alterations in internal organs were observed. Based on the clinical picture, the epidemic data and absence of histological lesions, the diagnosis of tetanus was established. The infection was considered to be due to the use of dirty needles used during vaccination.
