Chapter thirteen describes the increasing complexity within broadband telecommunications networks that leads to an ever-evolving challenge for network management. Due to the amount of data, its inconsistent and incoherent nature, and time constraints associated with management tasks, many aspects of telecommunications network management lend itself to the use of artificial intelligence techniques. In particular, within ATM networks, Virtual Path (VP) management functions, principally bandwidth and restoration management, are necessary. and some approaches, which highlight the complexity of these tasks, pointed to. These functions are inherently distributed and represent a situation where distributed artificial intelligence (DAI) can be applied. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
