Resumen Introducción. Existe escasa información sobre ganado puro con certificado genealógico en Costa Rica. Es necesario conocer el estado de esta población para dirigir esfuerzos en la mejora productiva del ganado cebú. Objetivo. Actualizar la base de datos de la Asociación de Criadores de Ganado Cebú de Costa Rica (ASOCEBÚ), caracterizar dicha población y analizar el uso de los machos de la raza Brahman gris en el país. Materiales y métodos. Se realizó un inventario en 121 ganaderías para actualizar la base de datos de la Asociación al año 2018. La información se clasificó por raza, sexo, edad, total de animales, criadores, región socio-económica, provincia y cantón. Se determinó la frecuencia de uso de reproductores Brahman gris. Resultados. Se contabilizaron 10 995 animales puros, distribuidos en seis razas (Brahman gris, Brahman rojo, Nelore, Gyr, Guzerat e Indubrasil). La raza Brahman gris predominó con un 74,5 % de la población y 76,8 % del total de criadores. La región Chorotega presentó la mayor población inscrita (49,5 %) y el mayor número de criadores (37,2 %). El 55,8 % de la población total provino de diez criadores, sin embargo, el mayor número de ganaderías correspondió a fincas con pocos animales. En la raza Brahman gris, el 60,8 % de la población provino de toros nacionales y el 39,2 % del extranjero. Conclusión. Los cebuinos puros registrados se distribuyen en todo el país. Se debe poner atención al manejo genético para minimizar la consanguidad. Se recomienda a los encargados de censos y encuestas, incluir la población de razas puras dentro de las evaluaciones. Abstract Introduction. There is not much information on pure cattle with a genealogical certificate in Costa Rica. It is necessary to know the status of this population to direct efforts towards the productive improvement of the Zebu cattle breeds. Objective. To update the database of the Costa Rican Cebu Cattle Breeders Association (ASOCEBÚ), characterize this population and analyze the use of males of the gray Brahman breed in the country. Materials and methods. An inventory was done in 121 herds to update the Association’s database to 2018. The information was sorted by breed, sex, age, total animals, breeders, socio-economic region, province, and canton. The frequency of use of gray Brahman breeders was determined. Results. A total of 10 995 pure animals were counted, distributed in six breeds (gray Brahman, red Brahman, Nelore, Gyr, Guzerat, and Indubrasil). The gray Brahman breed predominated with 74.5 % of the population and 76.8 % of the total of breeders. The Chorotega region had the highest registered population (49.5 %) and the highest number of breeders (37.2 %). 55.8 % of the total population came from ten breeders, however, the largest number of herds corresponds to farms with few animals. In the gray Brahman breed, 60.8 % of the population comes from domestic bulls, and 39.2 % from other countries. Conclusion. Registered pure zebu cattle are distributed throughout the whole country. Attention should be put to genetic management to minimize inbreeding. Census and survey managers are encouraged to include the purebred populations in their assessments.

Simple Summary Acknowledging that excessive use of chemical synthesis products in all animal fields is damaging for live beings and the environment, there is a need to propose natural elements as substitutes. Quebracho tannin may act against microbes, parasites, viruses and fungi, and has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. There are few studies on dietary use of condensed tannins in poultry. In this study, dietary Quebracho tannin was tested in growing laying hens of a local pure breed reared under free-range conditions. We found that 2% dietary Quebracho tannin is the maximum inclusion level, and beyond this level becomes detrimental for a growing hen’s health. Quebracho tannin reduced fecal outputs of Nematodes and Coccidia, and this attribute could be helpful for the maintenance of a better litter quality by making birds produce highly dry droppings. Abstract Tannins have shown numerous biological activities and are very appreciated in food animal production, especially for their antimicrobial, antiparasitic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antivirus effects. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of two levels of dietary Quebracho tannin (QT) on growth and performance traits, and possible effects on intestinal parasite load in Italian White Livorno pullets. A 140-day trial was carried out on 180 35-day-old females, fed on two levels of dietary QT inclusion: 0%, 1% and 2%. Birds were reared under free-range conditions. Dietary Quebracho tannin may be used up to 1% in growing female White Livorno chickens without any adverse effects. The results observed in this study on the use of dietary QT at 2% might have not reflected the real effect on performance traits due to the initial inclusion of dietary QT at 3%. Nevertheless, by reducing QT to 2%, a progressive normalization of body weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio was observed, resulting in compensatory growth. QT was demonstrated to drastically reduce fecal outputs of Nematodes eggs (Ascaridia spp. and Heterakis spp.) and Coccidia oocytes (Eimeria spp.). The inclusion of 2% produced highly dry droppings.

Objective : The objective of this study was to examine the newly arrived pure breed sheep considering antibody against some diseases and immunization of the animal against endemic diseases of hosting area according to species. Materials and methods : A total of 42 pure exotic breed of sheep, originated from Australia namely Parendale (n=14), Suffolk (n=13) and Dorper (n=15), imported by the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) were used in this study. Before shifting the animals to sheep farm, 1-month quarantine was done in an isolated shed by following step by step technique; first week was used for close observation, second week for immunization of animal against endemic diseases, third week for monitoring and observation against immunization, and the fourth week was used for determination of animal health status and immunity level. On day 1 and 2, the sheep remained at full rest along with supplied habituated feed, saline and drinking water. On day 3, fecal sample was collected from all animals to measure parasitic load. On day 4, blood and oculo-nasal discharge samples were collected to detect blood protozoa, peste des petits ruminants (PPR), foot and mouth disease (FMD) and other infectious zoonotic diseases like anthrax, brucellosis and tuberculosis. In the second week, immunization was done against PPR, FMD and hemorrhagic septisemia (HS) at two days interval. Farm biosecurity and biosafety for the workers and officers was maintained according to standard guideline. In the third week, the animals continued to be under close observation. On day 29, the antibody level produced due to vaccination was measured. Results: Parasitic load was found to be very low, and blood protozoa, PPR, FMD, anthrax, brucellosis and tuberculosis were negative. The antibody titer was detected at the acceptable level in sheep on day 29. The quarantine committee decided that the sheep were ready to transfer to the farm along with some recommendations. After completion of 1-month quarantine period, all sheep could not transmit any diseases in Bangladesh. Conclusion: Quarantine is mandatory for entering any new animal in a new area that gives the outline of different new diseases. It also acts as radar of exotic disease in a country. This study was performed to determine the influence of pig breed and gender on the ultimate pH and physicochemical properties of pork. The correlations between pH and pork quality traits directly related to carcass grade, and consumer's preference were also evaluated. The pH and meat grading scores for cold carcasses of 215 purebred pigs (Duroc, Landrace, and Yorkshire) from four different farms were obtained.
