Abstract

Agency activated through exchanges with saints is not simply present or absent. Rather it is emergent, depending on the mode of saints' material and social configurations, and the mood evoked by a specific saint's manifestation. In this essay I consider the history of an Afro-Brazilian saint called Slave Anastácia, as she signifies with varying social effects for different groups of ethno-racial users. I consider how saints become manifest in a given mode, and reduce a particular mood. Mood is inseparable from intangible entities' "presence." In this essay, I leverage such radical disjunctures between the forms of presence generated by the same saint - Anastácia as suffering martyr, as serene helpmeet, as erotic object - to reconsider how saints work at the intersection of mode and mood. By paying attention to saints and mood, I seek to worry over-familiar terms like will and agency. Thinking through mood points us toward material conjunctures and emotional resonances whose agency is diffuse but nevertheless generates predispositions to act in certain ways. Abstract

Sea-level rise (SLR) poses a range of threats to natural and built environments in coastal zones around the world. Assessment of the risks due to exposure and sensitivity of coastal communities to coastal flooding is essential for informed decision-making. Strategies for public understanding and awareness of the tangible effects of climate change are fundamental in developing policy options. A multidisciplinary, multinational team of natural and social scientists from the USA, the UK, and Brazil developed the METROPOLE Project to evaluate how local governments may decide between adaptation options associated with SLR projections. METROPOLE developed a participatory approach in which public actors engage fully in defining the research problem and evaluating outcomes. Using a case study of the city of Santos, in Brazil, METROPOLE developed a method for evaluating risks jointly with the community, comparing 'no-action' to 'adaptation' scenarios. At the core of the analysis are estimates of economic costs of the impact of floods on urban real estate under SLR projections through 2050 and 2100. Results helped identify broad preferences and orientations in adaptation planning, which the community, including the Santos municipal government, co-developed in a joint effort with natural and social scientists. 33. Coffee and Development of the Rio de Janeiro Economy, 1888–1920.

Abstract

Introduction Brazil has had the world's most successful coffee economy since the middle of the nineteenth century. This chapter evaluates the impact of the coffee economy on the development process of Rio de Janeiro state. This analysis studies the effects of the expansion of coffee exports as the “staple” sector in the meaning of Watkins, Baldwin, and Hirschman linkage effects. Unlike in most other coffee countries, coffee exports in Brazil triggered a vigorous process of industrial development, first in the city and state of Rio de Janeiro then in a more pronounced fashion in the city and state of São Paulo. We are concerned with the reasons why coffee in Rio de Janeiro after the abolition of slavery in 1888 more closely resembled the development of other coffee economies than the spectacular (and unusual) income-multiplying effect it had in São Paulo. To fully understand Brazil's participation in the world coffee economy, one has to study regional and subregional diversity. Economic development could be seen as a diversification process of economic activities around an export-led productive basis; the leading products determine the dynamism of economic growth. This interpretation of export-led growth centers on the dynamism induced in the economy by incomes generated in the export sector. They stay in the capital circuit by their capacity to stimulate investments in their productive chain, both upstream and downstream, and on the income brought about by the expansion of exporting activity. 34. The Integration of the World Coffee Market.

Abstract

Studies of coffee too often reify the international market. It is seen as an exogenous force that imposes itself on local producers who are powerless to do anything but obey its dictates. The “law of supply and demand” is seen as a structural dictator. There has been a substantial debate on the extent to which changes have been occasioned by changes in production processes (the creation of surplus) or in demand induced by changing consumption patterns or caused by commercial intermediaries. Who in the commodity chain is in control of prices, and has this changed over the centuries? A second issue, which may appear only a technical subsidiary of the first two but is in fact central, is the creation of international standards and grades. How homogeneous is the commodity and how uniform internationally are the definitions? Do people mean the same thing when they say “coffee”? This chapter analyzes the transformation of coffee from Arab monopoly to European colonial product to the sustenance of Latin American national states to, finally, a globally produced multinational commodity by asking the following questions: (1) What was the relative importance of changing patterns of demand and production in transforming the market, or, to put it another way, what were the relative roles of culture and technology in driving change? Abstract

Agency activated through exchanges with saints is not simply present or absent. Rather it is emergent, depending on the mode of saints’ material and social configurations, and the mood evoked by a specific saint’s manifestation. In this essay I consider the history of an Afro-Brazilian saint called Slave Anastácia, as she signifies with varying social effects for different groups of ethno-racial users. I consider how saints become manifest in a given mode, and educe a particular mood. Mood is inseparable from intangible entities’ “presence.” In this essay, I leverage such radical disjunctures between the forms of presence generated by the same saint—Anastácia as suffering martyr, as serene helpmeet, as erotic object—to reconsider how saints work at the intersection of mode and mood. By paying attention to saints and mood, I seek to worry over-familiar terms like will and agency. Thinking through mood points us toward material conjunctures and emotional resonances whose agency is diffuse but nevertheless generates predispositions to act in certain ways. L’agentivité, activée par les échanges avec les saints, n’est pas simplement présente ou absente. Elle est plutôt émergente, selon le mode de configuration matérielle et social des saints et l’humeur évoquée par la manifestation spécifique d’un saint. Dans cet essai, je considère l’histoire d’un saint afro-brésilien, appelé Esclave Anastácia, et sa signification et son impact social dans différents groupes ethniques et religieux. Je considère comment les saints se manifestent à travers une modalité et une configuration spécifique de matériaux et comment ils induisent une humeur particulière. L’humeur est inséparable de la « présence » des entités intangibles. A fim de se determinar os padrões de distribuição e de repartição temporal e espacial das espécies de peixes da família Sciaenidae na Baía de Santos, foram efetuadas amostras mensais diurnas com arrastos de praia e de fundo, de março de 1985 a maio de 1986. O estudo foi baseado na comparação das variações espaciais e temporais da ocorrência e abundância e na análise da influência de parâmetros ambientais. Vinte espécies de cienídeos foram coletadas na região, todas ocorrendo nos arrastos de fundo e nove nos arrastos de praia. Dentre essas, Stelliferrastrifer, Isopisthus parvipinnis, Paralonchurus brasiliensis, Micropogonias fumieri, Stellifer brasiliensis, Menticirrhus americanus e Menticirrhus littoralis, estiveram presentes durante todo o período, contribuindo com mais de 90 % do total capturado na Baía de Santos e região de praias adjacentes. A coexistência dessas espécies foi possível devido à alternância das ocorrências e dos picos de abundância em função das épocas do ano, da área de amostragem e da variação da temperatura e salinidade da água. S. rastrifer ocorreu preferencialmente nos arrastos de fundo, no inverno, em águas frias e de profundidade e salinidade medianas e em todos os setores de amostragem. I. parvipinnis, P brasiliensis e S. brasiliensis ocorreram preferencialmente nos arrastos de fundo, no inverno, primavera e outono, respectivamente, em águas frias, profundas e mais salinas e nos setores mais externos. M. furnieri e M. americanus ocorreram nos arrastos de fundo e de praia e, preferencialmente, no verão, em águas quentes, rasas e menos salinas e nos setores mais internos. M. littoralis ocorreu preferencialmente nos arrastos de praia, no inverno, em águas frias e em todas as estações de amostragem.The purpose of this study was to describe the occurrence and the spatial partitioning of the most abundant juvenile sciaenid fishes in the Bay of Santos, based upon the variability in the occurrence and abundance and influence of environmental factors. Monthly diurnal beach seine haul and bottom trawl samples were made between March 1985 and May 1986. Twenty species of sciaenid fishes were collected in the region, all occurrying in bottom trawls and nine of them in beach seine hauls. Among them, Stellifer rastrifer, Isopisthus parvipinnis, Paralonchurus brasiliensis, Micropogonias furnieri, Stellifer brasiliensis, Menticirrhus americanus and Menticirrhus littoralis were found year-round and constituted more than 90 % of total catches from the Bay of Santos and adjacent beach region; their coexistence was possible due to seasonal and spatial differences in relative abundance and due to water temperature and salinity influence. S. rastrifer occurred mainly in bottom trawls, during winter, in colder waters with medium depth and salinity and in all strata. /. parvipinnis, P. brasiliensis and S. brasiliensis occurred mainly in bottom trawls, during winter, spring and fall, respectively, in colder, deeper and saltier waters and in outer strata. M. furnieri and M. americanus occurred in bottom trawls and beach seine hauls and, mainly, during summer, in warmer, shallower and with less salinity waters and in inner strata. Através de um programa de amostragem com arrastos de praia no complexo baía-estuário de Santos e São Vicente, de dezembro de 1984 a novembro de 1985, foram capturados 2.632 exemplares do peixe-rei Xenomelaniris brasiliensis. Neste trabalho foram analisados a ocorrência, o crescimento, a relação peso / comprimento, o fator de condição e caracteres merísticos e morfométricos. X. brasiliensis foi capturada durante todo o ano na região, sendo mais abundante no verão e outono; a distribuição foi unimodal e o maior exemplar capturado mediu 131,6 mm. O recrutamento dos juvenis à arte de pesca utilizada teve início no final da primavera, possivelmente relacionado com uma desova de inverno.As many as 2,632 specimens of the atherinid Xenomelaniris brasiliensis were collected through a monthly beach seine survey programme in coastal beaches of the complex bay-estuary of Santos and São Vicente, from December, 1984 to November, 1985. The occurrence, growth, length-weight relationship, condition factor, meristics counts and body proportions of the species were analysed X. brasiliensis was found year-round in the region and was more abundant from summer to fall; one length group was observed and the largest size captured was 131.6 mm TL. Recruitment of the yearlings to the fishing gear started in the late spring and could be related to a winter spawning.

Introduction The development and spread of primary export-based capitalism in Latin America from the latter decades of the nineteenth century was characterized by many of the phenomena associated with the rise of industrial capitalism throughout the world, such as improved communications, a more up-to-date financial system, urbanization, industrial growth, and the extension of railway networks. These revolutionary changes in the material forces of production called forth an equally if not more revolutionary transformation in the relations of production. From the early to middle decades of the nineteenth century such a transformation had begun to take place in most Latin American countries. It should not, however, be imagined that this was simply a function of the supposed technological or market imperatives of industrial capitalism. It was a much more complex process. From Independence systems of servile labor in Latin America had been under attack from a number of quarters. The most potent force underlying all the various strands of the anti-slavery movement was the liberal ideology thrown up by the process of capitalist change taking place in Europe. This ideology not only influenced many Latin Americans, but also lay behind the vigorous and largely successful anti-slave trade policy of the British government. Slaves became more expensive, the systems decayed and alternatives had to be found. There was, however, great variation in the character and timing of change. In Peru slavery was abolished in 1856, but semi-servile Chinese coolie labor continued to be used on coastal plantations into the 1880s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

40. The recovery of trade during the War.

The nineteenth-century system of international economic relations collapsed in August 1914. It was never rebuilt. In the postwar period Britain was unable to play the pivotal role as free trader and investor which had underpinned the balance and sustained the momentum of the world economy. But when the war erupted the British had to establish some means of maintaining trade, for imports of food and raw material were vital for her survival and that of her allies. A strong, though selective, demand for most Latin American commodities, therefore, soon began to make itself felt. However, the rules of the game were now very different. The free play of the market was significantly circumscribed by state regulation and control. Shipping was strictly regulated either by direct compulsion or the rationing of bunker coal. Centralized buying was somewhat slower to develop, this being in line with the British government's “liberal” reluctance to impose economic controls. At first the British took over only the purchase and distribution of sugar. This was one of the country's two most important food imports, all of which came from abroad, and before the war about 75% of which had come from Germany and Austria–Hungary. It was not until 1916 that wheat and other key imports were brought under formal control, although unofficial bulk purchases through agents had been carried out before this time. Another important aspect of the change to the system of world trade was the economic war waged by both sides. 41. Britain and Latin America in historical perspective.

There can be no field of enterprise so magnificent in promise, so well calculated to raise sanguine hopes, so congenial to the most generous sympathies, so consistent with the best and highest interests of England as the vast continent of South America. For more than a century – from the Napoleonic Wars and, more especially, from the dramatic events of 1807–8 in the Iberian Peninsula which eventually led to the breakup of the American empires of both Spain and Portugal – Britain was the dominant external actor in the economic and, to a lesser extent, the political affairs of Latin America. The foundations of British commercial and financial pre-eminence in Latin America were firmly laid at the time of the formation of the independent Latin American states during the second and third decades of the nineteenth century. Throughout the century which followed, until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, Britain supplied more of the manufactured and capital goods imported into Latin America, more of the loans given to the new Latin American governments and more of the capital invested in Latin American infrastructure (above all, railways), agriculture and mining than any other nation. British merchant houses and, from the 1860s, British banks played a central role in the Latin American economies. British ships carried the bulk of the produce exported from Latin America and Britain was itself a major market for Latin American food and raw materials. Abstract

Sea-level rise (SLR) poses a range of threats to natural and built environments in coastal zones around the world. Assessment of the risks due to exposure and sensitivity of coastal communities to coastal flooding is essential for informed decision-making. Strategies for public understanding and awareness of the tangible effects of climate change are fundamental in developing policy options. A multidisciplinary, multinational team of natural and social scientists from the USA, the UK, and Brazil developed the METROPOLE Project to evaluate how local governments may decide between adaptation options associated with SLR projections. METROPOLE developed a participatory approach in which public actors engage fully in defining the research problem and evaluating outcomes. Using a case study of the city of Santos, in Brazil, METROPOLE developed a method for evaluating risks jointly with the community, comparing ‘no-action’ to ‘adaptation’ scenarios. At the core of the analysis are estimates of economic costs of the impact of floods on urban real estate under SLR projections through 2050 and 2100. Results helped identify broad preferences and orientations in adaptation planning, which the community, including the Santos municipal government, co-developed in a joint effort with natural and social scientists.

Abstract

A study on the inputs of organic matter to marine sediments of Santos Bay and Estuary, located in southeastern São Paulo State, Brazil, is presented here. The following geochemical markers were identified and quantified: aliphatic hydrocarbons (normal and isoprenoid alkanes), petroleum biomarkers, linear alkylbenzenes (LABs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Sediment samples, collected at 15 sites in the bay and surrounding channels, were extracted and analyzed by gas chromatography with flame ionization and mass spectrometer detectors. Total concentrations varied from 0.17 to 107.80 μg g-1 for aliphatics, from 47.2 to 2560.1 ng g-1 for petroleum biomarkers, from 16.9 to 430.6 ng g-1 for LABs and from 79.6 to 15389.1 ng g-1 for PAHs. Anthropogenic contributions were apparent, indicating the influences of the Cubatão industrial complex, sewage outfalls along the area, the waste deposit of Santos city and storage facilities for petroleum and derivatives, based on the higher concentrations of geochemical markers detected.
