Kinetic mixing between gauge fields of different U(1) factors is a well-studied phenomenon in 4d EFT. In string compactifications with U(1)s from sequestered D-brane sectors, kinetic mixing becomes a key target for the UV prediction of a phenomenologically important EFT operator. Surprisingly, in many cases kinetic mixing is absent due to a non-trivial cancellation. In particular, D3-D3 kinetic mixing in type-IIB vanishes while D3-anti-D3 mixing does not. This follows both from exact CFT calculations on tori as well as from a leading-order 10d supergravity analysis, where the key cancellation is between the C2 and B2 contribution. We take the latter approach, which is the only one available in realistic Calabi-Yau settings, to a higher level of precision by including sub-leading terms of the brane action and allowing for non-vanishing C0. The exact cancellation persists, which we argue to be the result of self-duality. We note that a B2C2 term on the D3-brane, which is often missing in the recent literature, is essential to obtain the correct zero result. Finally, allowing for -breaking fluxes, kinetic mixing between D3-branes arises at a volume-suppressed level. We provide basic explicit formulae, both for kinetic as well as magnetic mixing, leaving the study of phenomenologically relevant, more complex situations for the future. We show that the bosonic sector of the N = (1, 0), 6D Salam-Sezgin gauged supergravity model possesses a T-duality symmetry upon a circle reduction to D = 5. We then construct a simple magnetic rotating string solution with two equal angular momenta. Applying the T-duality transformation to this solution, we obtain the general boosted rotating dyonic black string solutions whose global structures and thermodynamic quantities are also analyzed. Owing to the fact that the solutions are not asymptotically flat, we find that there are two distinct globally-different non-extremal solutions with two different sets of thermal dynamic variables, with both satisfying the thermodynamic first law and the corresponding Small relations. However, their BPS limit becomes the same and we show that it preserves one quarter of supersymmetry by directly solving the corresponding Killing spinor equations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the logarithmic corrections to various CFT partition functions in the context of the AdS4/CFT3 correspondence for theories arising on the worldvolume of M2-branes. We utilize four-dimensional gauged supergravity and heat kernel methods and present general expressions for the logarithmic corrections to the gravitational on-shell action and black hole entropy for a number of different supergravity backgrounds. We outline several subtle features of these calculations and contrast them with a similar analysis of logarithmic corrections performed directly in the eleven-dimensional uplift of a given four-dimensional supergravity background. We find results consistent with AdS/CFT provided that the infinite sum over KK modes on the internal space is regularized in a specific manner. This analysis leads to an explicit expression for the logarithmic correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of large Kerr-Newmann and Reissner-Nordström black holes in AdS4. Our results also have important implications for effective field theory coupled to gravity in AdS4 and for the existence of scale-separated AdS4 vacua in string theory, which come in the form of new constraints on the field content and mass spectrum of matter fields. In this work we present new solutions of type IIB supergravity based on wrapped D5 branes. We propose that two of these backgrounds are holographically dual to Quantum Field Theories that confine. The high energy regime of the field theories is that of a Little String Theory. We study various observables (Wilson and 't Hooft loops, Entanglement entropy, density of degrees of freedom and the spectrum of spin-two glueballs, among others). Supertubes are supersymmetric configurations in string theory in which branes are extending along a closed curve. For a supertube of codimension two, its dipole charge is characterized by the duality monodromy around the closed curve. When multiple codimension-2 supertubes are present, the monodromies around different supertubes can be non-commuting, namely non-Abelian. Non-Abelian configurations of supertubes are expected to play an important role in non-perturbative physics of string theory, especially black holes. In this paper, in the framework of five-dimensional supergravity, we construct exact solutions describing codimension-2 supertubes in three-dimensional space. We use an extension formula to construct a three-dimensional solution from a two-dimensional seed solution. The two-dimensional seed is an F-theory like configuration in which a torus is nontrivially fibered over a complex plane. In the first example, there is a stack of circular supertubes around which there is a non-trivial monodromy. In some cases this can be thought of as a microstate of a black hole in AdS2 × S2. The second example is an axi-symmetric solution with two stacks of circular supertubes with non-Abelian monodromies. In addition, there is a continuous distribution of charges on the symmetry axis. The Molien-Weyl integral formula and the Hilbert-Poincaré series have proven to be powerful mathematical tools in relation to gauge theories, allowing to count the number of gauge invariant operators. In this paper we show that these methods can also be employed to construct Free Differential Algebras and, therefore, reproduce the associated pure supergravity spectrum and nonperturbative objects. Indeed, given a set of fields, the Hilbert-Poincaré series allows to compute all possible invariants and consequently derive the cohomology structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We derive a gravitational block formula for the supersymmetric action for a general class of supersymmetric AdS solutions, described by GK geometry. Extremal points of this action describe supersymmetric AdS 3 solutions of type IIB supergravity, sourced by D3-branes, and supersymmetric AdS 2 solutions of D = 11 supergravity, sourced by M2-branes. In both cases, the branes are also wrapped over a two-dimensional orbifold known as a spindle, or a two-sphere. We develop various geometric methods for computing the gravitational block contributions, allowing us to recover previously known results for various explicit supergravity solutions, and to significantly generalize these results to other compactifications. For the AdS 3 solutions we give a general proof that our off-shell supersymmetric action agrees with an appropriate off-shell c-function in the dual field theory, establishing a very general exact result in holography. For the AdS 2 solutions our gravitational block formula allows us to obtain the entropy for supersymmetric, magnetically charged and accelerating black holes in AdS 4 . [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Theories with compact extra dimensions can exhibit a vacuum instability known as a bubble of nothing. These decay modes can be obstructed if the internal manifold is stabilized by fluxes, or if it carries Wilson lines for background gauge fields, or if the instanton is incompatible with the spin structure. In each of these cases the decay can proceed by adding dynamical charged membranes or gauge fields. We give a general, bottom-up procedure for constructing approximate bubble of nothing solutions in models with internal spheres stabilized by flux and study the influence of the brane tension on the tunneling exponent, finding two branches of solutions that merge at a minimal superextremal value of the tension. In the case of Wilson operators and incompatible fermions, the relevant bubble is shown to be the Euclidean Reissner-Nordstrom black hole, and the ordinary decay exponent is modified by 1/g2 effects. We construct a fully interacting holomorphic/topological theory in eleven dimensions that is defined on products of Calabi–Yau fivefolds with real one-manifolds. The theory describes a particular deformation of the cotangent bundle to the moduli space of complex structures on the fivefold. Its field content matches the holomorphic (or minimal) twist of the eleven-dimensional supergravity multiplet recently computed by the second two authors, and we offer numerous consistency checks showing that the interactions correctly describe interacting twisted eleven-dimensional supergravity at the perturbative level. We prove that the global symmetry algebra of our model on flat space is an L ∞ central extension of the infinite-dimensional simple exceptional super Lie algebra E(5, 10), following a recent suggestion of Cederwall in the context of the relevant pure spinor model. Twists of superconformal algebras map to the fields of our model on the complement of a stack of M2 or M5 branes, laying the groundwork for a fully holomorphic version of twisted holography in this context. We show that there are certain perturbatively stable non-supersymmetric AdS vacua which are also brane-jet stable. Also we extend the analysis of brane-jets to the AdS vacua from curved domain walls like Janus solutions. First, we apply the brane-jet analysis to the non-supersymmetric Janus solutions of type IIB supergravity found by Bak, Gutperle and Hirano. Second, we study the brane-jet of AdS4 vacua from eleven-dimensional supergravity on Sasaki-Einstein manifolds: the supersymmetric and the skew-whiffed Freund-Rubin, the Pope-Warner, and the Englert solutions. Third, we examine the non-supersymmetric AdS4 vacua from Q1,1,1 and M1,1,1 manifolds discovered by Cassani, Koerber and Varela. It turns out that all the AdS vacua we consider in this work are brane-jet stable. Especially, the Janus, the skew-whipped Freund-Rubin, and the AdS4 vacua from Q1,1,1 and M1,1,1 are perturbatively stable within known subsectors of truncations and also brane-jet stable. We consider N = (n, 0) supersymmetric AdS3 vacua of type II supergravity realising the superconformal algebra osp (n|2) for n > 4. For the cases n = 6 and n = 5, one can realise these algebras on backgrounds that decompose as foliations of AdS3 × ℂℙ3 (squashed ℂℙ3 for n = 5) over an interval. We classify such solutions with bi-spinor techniques and find the local form of each of them: they only exist in (massive) IIA and are defined locally in terms of an order 3 polynomial h similar to the AdS7 vacua of (massive) IIA. Many distinct local solutions exist for different tunings of h that give rise to bounded (or semi infinite) intervals bounded by physical behaviour. We show that it is possible to glue these local solutions together by placing D8 branes in the interior of the interval without breaking supersymmetry, which expands the possibilities for global solutions immensely. We illustrate this point with some simple examples. Finally we also show that AdS3 vacua for n = 7, 8 only exist in d = 11 supergravity and are all locally AdS4×S7. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We consider type IIB compactifications on a general 4D group manifold with different types of possible spacetime filling O-planes and the corresponding D-branes parallel to them. Once fluxes allowed by the associated orientifold projection are included, a 6D 풩 = (1, 1) gauged supergravity is obtained. In this paper we show how the consistent coupling to dynamical open strings living on the spacetime filling D-branes may be captured by the inclusion of extra vector multiplets and extra embedding tensor deformations on the gauged supergravity side. As a result, the quadratic constraints on the embedding tensor consistently reproduce the source corrected 10D Bianchi identities. Furthermore, the field strength modifications induced by the open string sector could potentially be understood as U-dual versions of the Green-Schwarz terms. Finally, the entire scalar potential of the theory exactly matches the one obtained from reduction of the bulk action plus the source contributions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present general results on generating AdS2 solutions to Type II supergravity from AdS3 solutions via U(1) and SL(2) T-dualities. We focus on a class of Type IIB solutions with small 풩 = 4 supersymmetry, that we show can be embedded into a more general class of solutions obtained by double analytical continuation from AdS3 geometries with small 풩 = (0, 4) supersymmetry constructed in the literature. We then start the analysis of the superconformal quantum mechanics dual to the 풩 = 4 backgrounds focusing on a subclass of AdS2 × S3 × 핋3 solutions foliated over a Riemann surface. We show that the associated supersymmetric quantum mechanics describes monopole bubbling in 4d 풩 = 2 supersymmetric gauge theories living in D3-D7 branes, as previously discussed in the literature. Therefore, we propose that our solutions provide a geometrical description via holography of monopole bubbling in 4d 풩 = 2 SCFTs. We check our proposal with the computation of the central charge. A detailed derivation of 3 + 1 dimensional induced or emergent gravity in the IKKT matrix model at one loop is given, as announced in [1]. The mechanism requires a brane configuration with structure M 3 , 1 × K ⊂ ℝ 9 , 1 , where M 3 , 1 is the noncommutative space-time brane, and K are compact fuzzy extra dimensions embedded in target space. The 3+1-dimensional Einstein-Hilbert action then arises in the one loop effective action of the maximally supersymmetric IIB or IKKT matrix model, with effective Newton constant determined by the Kaluza-Klein scale of K . At weak coupling, all physical modes are confined to the brane, leading to 3 + 1-dimensional low-energy physics. The Einstein-Hilbert action can be interpreted as interaction of K with the space-time brane via IIB supergravity. The vacuum energy does not act as cosmological constant, but stabilizes the brane structure at one loop. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We use consistent truncations in supergravity to show that the backreaction of N rotating M5-branes wrapped on a Riemann surface leads to asymptotically AdS5 black hole solutions of 11d supergravity. We discuss the thermodynamic properties of these black holes focusing on their supersymmetric limit. The Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the supersymmetric black holes scales as N3 and can be reproduced by the superconformal index of the holographically dual 4d N = 1 SCFTs of class S . We propose additional tests of holography by studying supersymmetric Wilson loops in p+1-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang–Mills (SYM) theories on the lattice in the large N limit. In the dual gravity description, this computation involves calculating the area of a fundamental string worldsheet in certain Type II supergravity backgrounds. Though thermodynamic observables have been computed on the lattice using Monte Carlo methods and agree with the supergravity results in various dimensions, not much has been done for the gauge-invariant operators such as the Wilson loop. We provide analytical predictions for these loops for various non-conformal Dp-brane background cases with p ≤ 2 in the large N limit and comment on how these can be computed on non-orthogonal lattices in various models. Hidden sectors are ubiquitous in supergravity theories, in strings and in branes. Well motivated models such as the Stueckelberg hidden sector model could provide a candidate for dark matter. In such models, the hidden sector communicates with the visible sector via the exchange of a dark photon (dark Z′) while dark matter is constituted of Dirac fermions in the hidden sector. Using data from collider searches and precision measurements of SM processes as well as the most recent limits from dark matter direct and indirect detection experiments, we perform a comprehensive scan over a wide range of the Z′ mass and set exclusion bounds on the parameter space from sub-GeV to several TeV. We then discuss the discovery potential of an O (TeV) scale Z′ at HL-LHC and the ability of future forward detectors to probe very weakly interacting sub-GeV Z′ bosons. Our analysis shows that the parameter space in which a Z′ can decay to hidden sector dark matter is severely constrained whereas limits become much weaker for a Z′ with no dark decays. We extend the work of Schwarz [1] to show that bound states of type IIB supersymmetric (p, q)-strings on a circle are associated with M2-branes irreducibly wrapped on T2, or equivalently with nontrivial worldvolume fluxes. Beyond this extension we consider the Hamiltonian of an M2-brane with C± fluxes formulated on a symplectic torus bundle with monodromy. In particular, we analyze the relevant case when the monodromy is parabolic. We show that the Hamiltonian is defined in terms of the coinvariant module. We also find that the mass operator is invariant under transformations between inequivalent coinvariants. These coinvariants classify the inequivalent classes of twisted torus bundles with nontrivial monodromy for a given flux. We obtain their associated (p, q)-strings via double dimensional reduction, which are invariant under a parabolic subgroup of SL(2, ℚ). This is the origin of the gauge symmetry of the associated gauged supergravity. These bound states could also be related to the parabolic Scherk-Schwarz reductions of type IIB string theory. We test the gauge/gravity duality between the matrix model and type IIA string theory at low temperatures with unprecedented accuracy. To this end, we perform lattice Monte Carlo simulations of the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) matrix model, which is the one-parameter deformation of the Banks-Fischler-Shenker-Susskind (BFSS) matrix model, taking both the large N and continuum limits. We leverage the fact that sufficiently small flux parameters in the BMN matrix model have a negligible impact on the energy of the system while stabilizing the flat directions so that simulations at smaller N than in the BFSS matrix model are possible. Hence, we can perform a precision measurement of the large N continuum energy at the lowest temperatures to date. The energy is in perfect agreement with supergravity predictions including estimations of α′-corrections from previous simulations. At the lowest temperature where we can simulate efficiently (T = 0.25λ1/3, where λ is the 't Hooft coupling), the difference in energy to the pure supergravity prediction is less than 10%. Furthermore, we can extract the coefficient of the 1/N4 corrections at a fixed temperature with good accuracy, which was previously unknown. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We construct a new family of AdS2× S2× S2 solutions to Type IIA supergravity with 4 supercharges acting with non-Abelian T-duality on the recent class constructed in [1]. We focus on a particular solution in this class asymptoting locally to an AdS5 Gaiotto-Maldacena geometry. This solution allows for a line defect interpretation within the 4d N = 2 SCFT dual to this geometry, that we study in detail. We show that the defect branes, consisting on a non-trivial intersection of D2-D4-NS5-F1 branes, can be interpreted as baryon vertices within the 4d N = 2 SCFT, whose backreaction gives rise to the AdS2 solution. We construct the explicit quiver quantum mechanics that flows in the IR to the dual SCQM, and show that it can be embedded within the quiver CFT associated to the AdS5 solution. The quiver quantum mechanics arises from a brane box set-up of D2-branes stretched between perpendicular NS5-branes, that we construct from the AdS2 solution. We provide non-trivial checks of our proposed duality. Our construction provides one further example of the successful applications of non-Abelian T-duality to holography, in this case in providing a very non-trivial connection between AdS2 solutions, line defects and brane boxes. We classify all warped dS 5 backgrounds in D  = 11 supergravity with enhanced supersymmetry. We show that backgrounds preserving N  = 16 supersymmetries consist of either a stack of M5 branes with transverse space R 5 , or a generalized M5-brane configuration with transverse space R × N 4 , where N 4 is a hyper-Kähler manifold and the M5-brane harmonic function is determined by a hyper-Kähler potential on N 4. Moreover, we find that there are no backgrounds preserving exactly N  = 24 supersymmetries. Backgrounds preserving N  = 32 supersymmetries correspond to either R 1 , 10 or A d S 7 × S 4 . We determine the necessary and sufficient conditions for warped product dS n solutions, 5 ⩽ n ⩽ 10, to preserve supersymmetry in D = 11 supergravity, without assuming factorization of the Killing spinors. We prove that for 7 ⩽ n ⩽ 10, all such solutions are flat, with vanishing four-form. We also show that the only warped product dS 6 solutions are either the maximally supersymmetric AdS 7 × S 4 solution, or R 1 , 6 × N 4 where N 4 is hyperKähler, with vanishing four-form. Supersymmetric warped product dS 5 solutions are then classified; it is shown that all such solutions are generalized M5-brane configurations, for which the transverse space is R × N 4 , and N 4 is a hyperKähler manifold. We argue that a type IIB Euclidean supergravity solution of the form ℝ × S1× 핋8 with imaginary self-dual F1 flux through ℝ × S1 belongs to the chain of AdSd× Sd× 핋10−2d vacua with (imaginary) self-dual Fd flux, where d ≤ 5. Such vacua come from the near-horizon of D(d − 2)/D(8 − d) branes and are supersymmetric for odd values of d. For d = 1 we speculate that the hallmark of conformal symmetry for the matrix model dual is a vanishing free energy. The matrix dual was recently constructed by [1] by adding matrix interactions coming from strings stretching between the D(−1) and D7 branes to the IKKT matrix model. We find that the corresponding supergravity solution indeed has vanishing on-shell action. Specific F5 fluxes need to be switched on as a consequence of (a T-dual version of) the Hanany-Witten effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We construct a new class of AdS3 × S3 × M4 solutions of massive Type IIA supergravity with (0, 4) supersymmetries and SU(3) structure. We study in detail two subclasses of these solutions. The first subclass is when M4 = S2× Σ2, with Σ2 a 2d Riemann surface, and the geometry is foliated over the Σ2. We interpret these solutions as duals to surface defect CFTs within the 6d (1, 0) CFTs dual to the AdS7 × S2 × I solutions of massive IIA supergravity. The second subclass is when M4 = 핋3 × I and the geometry is foliated over the interval. In this case supersymmetry is enhanced to (4, 4) in the massless limit, and the solutions are the sought-for holographic duals of (4, 4) CFTs living in two dimensional D2-NS5-D4 Hanany-Witten brane set-ups. In turn, in the massive case the solutions find an interpretation as D2-D4 branes embedded in Type I' string theory. We construct explicit quiver gauge theories from the different brane set-ups that flow in the IR to the 2d dual CFTs dual to the solutions. Supergravity brane solutions allow for a generalised type of Kaluza-Klein reduction onto brane worldvolumes. The known replacement of a flat worldvolume metric by a Ricci-flat metric constitutes a consistent Kaluza-Klein truncation of the starting higher-dimensional supergravity theory down to a lower-dimensional pure gravity theory. This paper shows how to extend such a brane-worldvolume pure-gravity consistent truncation to that for a full nonlinear supergravity theory for the Type IIB D3-brane and the M-theory/Type IIA M5-brane. The extension of worldvolume supersymmetry is given by the unbroken supersymmetry of the original flat "skeleton" brane. Compatibility with further worldvolume diagonal and transverse vertical dimensional reductions is also shown, providing the brane-worldvolume supergravity embeddings of all descendants of the skeleton D3- and M5-branes. Employing the method applied to M5-branes recently by Bah, Bonetti, Minasian and Nardoni, we study M2-branes on a disk with non-trivial holonomies at the boundary. In four-dimensional U(1)4-gauged N = 2 supergravity, we find supersymmetric AdS2 solutions from M2-branes wrapped on a topological disk in Calabi-Yau two-, three- and four-folds. We uplift the solutions to eleven-dimensional supergravity. For the solutions from topological disk in Calabi-Yau four-folds, the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is finite and well-defined. On the other hand, from the topological disk in Calabi-Yau two- and three-folds, we could not find solutions with finite Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We construct a supergravity background corresponding to a backreacted D0/D4-brane system. The background is holographically dual to the Venecianno limit of the Berkoos-Douglas matrix model. It is known that the localized D0/D4 system is unstable when the D0-branes are within the D4-branes. To circumvent this difficulty we separate the D4s from the D0s, which are placed at the origin, and restore the symmetry of the combined system by distributing the D4-branes on a spherical shell around the D0-branes. The backreacted solution is first obtained perturbatively in Nf/Nc and displayed analytically to 1st order. A non-perturbative numerical solution is then presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the twisted covariant form hierarchies (TCFH) of type IIA and IIB 10-dimensional supergravities and show that all form bilinears of supersymmetric backgrounds satisfy the conformal Killing-Yano equation with respect to a TCFH connection. We also compute the Killing-Stäckel, Killing-Yano and closed conformal Killing-Yano tensors of all spherically symmetric type II brane backgrounds and demonstrate that the geodesic flow on these solutions is completely integrable by giving all independent charges in involution. We then identify all form bilinears of common sector and D-brane backgrounds which generate hidden symmetries for particle and string probe actions. We also explore the question on whether charges constructed from form bilinears are sufficient to prove the integrability of probes on supersymmetric backgrounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We will investigate a system of M2-M5 branes as a black M2-M5 bound state. The behavior of this system will be investigated at short distances. At such scales, we will have to incorporate quantum gravitational corrections to the supergravity solutions. We will study the non-equilibrium quantum thermodynamics of this black M2-M5 bound state. The quantum work for this solution will be obtained using the Jarzynski equality. We will also study the corrections to the thermodynamic stability of this system from quantum gravitational corrections. We will use the concept of a novel quantum mass to analyze the quantum gravitational corrections to the information geometry of this system. We include in F-theory, through open Type I F-theory branes (F-branes), string theories with N = 1 supersymmetry, both Type I and heterotic. Type I branes are distinguished from Type II by worldvolume parity projection. The same open Type I branes describe both open Type I superstrings and closed heterotic upon different sectionings from F-branes to worldsheets, while closed Type I superstrings arise from closed Type I branes. (Type II superstrings come from closed Type II branes, as described previously.) F-theory manifests the exceptional-group U-duality symmetry, with all massless bosonic fields in a single gauge coset. This coset branches to the usual bosonic supergravity fields upon sectioning. We examine in detail the simple case of D = 3 F-theory: parity projection reduces the Type II coset SL(5)/SO(3,2) to the Type I coset SO(3,3)/SO(2,1)2 = SL(4)/SO(2,2). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We find a two-parameter family of generalized superstrata that emerge as smooth, supersymmetric solutions in three-dimensional gauged supergravity coupled to additional scalar fields. This new family of generalized superstrata are smooth microstate geometries and may be thought of as supersymmetric Coulomb-branch extensions of the original superstrata in which the underlying supertube undergoes an elliptical deformation. These solutions had already been obtained numerically, and as series solutions, to the equations of motion, and some of them were conjectured to be supersymmetric. Here we prove the supersymmetry of an entire two-parameter family and we obtain a highly non-trivial analytic and smooth solution for a one-parameter limit in which the global symmetry of the metric is enhanced to SO(3). We also confirm that the other known families of microstrata are not supersymmetric. We conclude with a cursory analysis of some of the singular brane distributions that can be accessed from three-dimensional gauged supergravity while preserving the same supersymmetries as the superstratum, and therefore of the three-charge black hole. Vacuum compactifications may suffer from instabilities under small perturbations or tunnel effects; both are difficult to analyze. In this paper we consider the issue from a higher-dimensional perspective. We first look at how stability works for supersymmetric vacua, where it is widely expected to hold. We first show that the nucleation of brane bubbles in type II AdS compactifications is forbidden in the probe approximation by a simple argument involving pure spinors and calibrations. We then adapt familiar positive-energy theorems directly to M-theory and type II supergravity, rather than to their effective lower-dimensional reductions, also showing how to consistently include localized sources. We finally initiate an analysis of how these arguments might be extended to non-supersymmetric vacua. In M-theory, at the lower-derivative level, we find that the most natural modifications fail to stabilize the skew-whiffed and Englert vacua. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We consider N = (2, 2) AdS3/CFT2 dualities proposed in the large central charge limit (c → ∞) by Eberhardt. Here we propose the associated D1-D5 systems to be orbifolds of the standard N = (4, 4) systems, thereby elevating the dualities to the finite-c level on the boundary and to the quantum level in the bulk. In particular, we show that our brane systems yield low-energy sigma models whose subleading central charges match earlier predictions from bulk one-loop supergravity computations. In the case involving the Enriques surface, the finite-c sigma model has a non-trivial elliptic genus which we use to microscopically explain both the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and the subleading logarithmic correction to it for the associated macroscopic black brane. We construct supersymmetric solutions of D = 6 gauged supergravity, where is a two-dimensional orbifold known as a spindle. These uplift to solutions of massive type IIA supergravity using a general prescription, that we describe. We argue that these solutions correspond to the near-horizon limit of a system of Nf D8-branes, together with N D4-branes wrapped on a spindle, embedded as a holomorphic curve inside a Calabi-Yau three-fold. The dual field theories are d = 3, N = 2 SCFTs that arise from a twisted compactification of the d = 5, N = 1 USp(2N) gauge theory. We show that the holographic free energy associated to these solutions is reproduced by extremizing an off- shell free energy, that we conjecture to arise in the large N limit of the localized partition function of the d = 5 theories on. We formulate a universal proposal for a class of off-shell free energies, whose extremization reproduces all previous results for branes wrapped on spindles, as well as on genus g Riemann surfaces Σg. We further illustrate this proposal discussing D4-branes wrapped on , for which we present a supersymmetric solution of D = 6 gauged supergravity along with the associated entropy function. We construct the nonrelativistic covariant world-volume action for a single M5 brane of D = 11 supergravity in M-theory. The corresponding non-Lorentzian (NL) background possesses a codimension three foliation and is identified as the Membrane Newton-Cartan manifold in the presence of background fluxes that are suitably expanded in 1 / c 2 expansion. We also expand the associated world-volume fields in 1 / c 2 expansion. We construct supersymmetric AdS5 × Σ solutions of D = 7 gauged supergravity, where Σ is a two-dimensional orbifold known as a spindle. These uplift on S4 to solutions of D = 11 supergravity which have orbifold singularites. We argue that the solutions are dual to d = 4, N = 1 SCFTs that arise from N M5-branes wrapped on a spindle, embedded as a holomorphic curve inside a Calabi-Yau three-fold. In contrast to the usual topological twist solutions, the superconformal R-symmetry mixes with the isometry of the spindle in the IR, and we verify this via a field theory calculation, as well as reproducing the gravity formula for the central charge. We use the superspace formulation of supergravity in eleven and ten dimensions to compute fermion couplings on the M2-brane and on Dp-branes. In this formulation fermionic couplings arise naturally from the θ-expansion of the superfields from which the brane actions are constructed. The techniques we use and develop can in principle be applied to determine the fermionic couplings to general background fields up to arbitrary order. Starting with the superspace formulation of 11-dimensional supergravity, we use a geometric technique known as the 'normal coordinate' method to obtain the θ-expansion of the M2-brane action. We then present a method which allows us to translate the knowledge of fermionic couplings on the M2-brane to knowledge of such couplings on the D2-brane, and then to any Dp-brane. This method is based on superspace generalizations of both the compactification taking 11-dimensional supergravity to type IIA supergravity and the T-duality rules connecting the type IIA and type IIB supergravities. We construct new families of AdS2× S2× S2 solutions with 4 supercharges in Type II supergravities. We show that subclasses of these solutions can be interpreted in terms of defect branes embedded in 4d N = 4 SYM, or orbifolds thereof. This is explicitly realised by showing that the solutions asymptote locally to AdS5× S5/ℤn, in Type IIB, or its T-dual background, in Type IIA. The latter is a Gaiotto-Maldacena geometry realised on an intersection of D4 and NS5 branes. We extend the Type IIA solutions to include D6 branes, and interpret them as describing backreacted baryon vertices within 4d N = 2 CFTs living in D4-NS5-D6 intersections. We propose explicit quiver quantum mechanics in which the defect branes play the role of colour branes, with the D4 branes of the D4-NS5-D6 intersection becoming flavour branes. These quivers are used to compute the degeneracies of the ground states of the dual super conformal quantum mechanics, that are shown to agree with the holographic expressions. We consider a non-relativistic limit of the bosonic sector of eleven-dimensional supergravity, leading to a theory based on a covariant 'membrane Newton-Cartan' (MNC) geometry. The local tangent space is split into three 'longitudinal' and eight 'transverse' directions, related only by Galilean rather than Lorentzian symmetries. This generalises the ten-dimensional stringy Newton-Cartan (SNC) theory. In order to obtain a finite limit, the field strength of the eleven-dimensional four-form is required to obey a transverse self-duality constraint, ultimately due to the presence of the Chern-Simons term in eleven dimensions. The finite action then gives a set of equations that is invariant under longitudinal and transverse rotations, Galilean boosts and local dilatations. We supplement these equations with an extra Poisson equation, coming from the subleading action. Reduction along a longitudinal direction gives the known SNC theory with the addition of RR gauge fields, while reducing along a transverse direction yields a new non-relativistic theory associated to D2 branes. We further show that the MNC theory can be embedded in the U-duality symmetric formulation of exceptional field theory, demonstrating that it shares the same exceptional Lie algebraic symmetries as the relativistic supergravity, and providing an alternative derivation of the extra Poisson equation. We construct consistent Kaluza-Klein truncations of type IIA supergravity on (i) Σ2 × S3 and (ii) Σ3 × S3, where Σ2 = S2/Γ, ℝ2/Γ, or ℍ2/Γ, and Σ3 = S3/Γ, ℝ3/Γ, or ℍ3/Γ, with Γ a discrete group of symmetries, corresponding to NS5-branes wrapped on Σ2 and Σ3. The resulting theories are a D = 5, N = 4 gauged supergravity coupled to three vector multiplets with scalar manifold SO(1, 1) × SO(5, 3)/(SO(5) × SO(3)) and gauge group SO(2) × (SO(2) ⋉ Σ 2 ℝ4) which depends on the curvature of Σ2, and a D = 4, N = 2 gauged supergravity coupled to one vector multiplet and two hypermultiplets with scalar manifold SU(1, 1)/U(1) × G2(2)/SO(4) and gauge group ℝ+ × ℝ+ for truncations (i) and (ii) respectively. Instead of carrying out the truncations at the 10-dimensional level, we show that they can be obtained directly by performing Inönü-Wigner contractions on the 5 and 4-dimensional gauged supergravity theories that come from consistent truncations of 11-dimensional supergravity associated with M5-branes wrapping Σ2 and Σ3. This suggests the existence of a broader class of lower-dimensional gauged supergravity theories related by group contractions that have a 10 or 11-dimensional origin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently an exact worldsheet description of strings propagating in certain black hole microstate geometries was constructed in terms of null-gauged WZW models. In this paper we consider a family of such coset models, in which the currents being gauged are specified by a set of parameters that a priori take arbitrary values. We show that consistency of the spectrum of the worldsheet CFT implies a set of quantisation conditions and parity restrictions on the gauging parameters. We also derive these constraints from an independent geometrical analysis of smoothness, absence of horizons and absence of closed timelike curves. This allows us to prove that the complete set of consistent backgrounds in this class of models is precisely the general family of (NS5-decoupled) non-BPS solutions known as the JMaRT solutions, together with their various (BPS and non-BPS) limits. We clarify several aspects of these backgrounds by expressing their six-dimensional solutions explicitly in terms of five non-negative integers and a single length-scale. Finally we study non-trivial two-charge limits, and exhibit a novel set of non-BPS supergravity solutions describing bound states of NS5 branes carrying momentum charge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We construct families of supersymmetric AdS3 × Y7 and AdS3 × Y8 solutions to type IIB string theory and M-theory, respectively. Here Y7 is an S5 fibration over Σ, while Y8 is an S4 fibration over Σg × Σ, where Σg is a Riemann surface of genus g > 1 and Σ is a two-dimensional orbifold known as a spindle. We interpret the solutions as near-horizon limits of N D3-branes wrapped on Σ and N M5-branes wrapped on Σg × Σ, respectively. These are holographically dual to d = 2, (0, 2) SCFTs, and we show that the central charge and superconformal R-symmetry of the gravity solutions agree with dual field theory calculations. We consider different (supersymmetric) brane intersections in type IIB string theory that preserve (1 + 1)D Lorentz symmetry. We provide the full supergravity solutions in their analytic form and discuss their physical properties. The Ansatz for the spacetime dependence of the different brane warp factors goes beyond the harmonic superposition principle. By studying the associated near-horizon geometry, we construct interesting classes of AdS3 vacua in type IIB and highlight their relation to the existing classifications in the literature. In this paper a Penrose limit is constructed for type IIB AdS6× S2× Σ supergravity solutions. These solutions are dual to five dimensional SCFTs related to (p,q) five brane webs, which can often be described in terms of long quiver gauge theories. The null geodesic from which the Penrose limit is constructed is localized at a unique point on the two dimensional Riemann surface Σ, where the AdS6 and S2 metric factors are extremal. The resulting pp-wave spacetime takes a universal form. The world sheet action of the Green-Schwarz string is quadratic in the light cone gauge and the spectrum of string excitations is obtained. We study in detail the irreducible representation of E theory that corresponds to massless particles. This has little algebra I c (E 9) and contains 128 physical states that belong to the spinor representation of SO (1 6). These are the degrees of freedom of maximal supergravity in eleven dimensions. This smaller number of the degrees of freedom, compared to what might be expected, is due to an infinite number of duality relations which in turn can be traced to the existence of a subaglebra of I c (E 9) which forms an ideal and annihilates the representation. A classical Ed(d)-invariant Hamiltonian formulation of world-volume theories of half-BPS p-branes in type IIb and eleven-dimensional supergravity is proposed, extending known results to d ≤ 6. It consists of a Hamiltonian, characterised by a generalised metric, and a current algebra constructed s.t. it reproduces the Ed(d) generalised Lie derivative. Ed(d)-covariance necessitates the introduction of so-called charges, specifying the type of p-brane and the choice of section. For p > 2, currents of p-branes are generically non- geometric due to the imposition of U-duality, e.g. the M5-currents contain coordinates associated to the M2-momentum. A derivation of the Ed(d)-invariant current algebra from a canonical Poisson structure is in general not possible. At most, one can derive a current algebra associated to para-Hermitian exceptional geometry. The membrane in the SL(5)-theory is studied in detail. It is shown that in a generalised frame the current algebra is twisted by the generalised fluxes. As a consistency check, the double dimensional reduction from membranes in M-theory to strings in type IIa string theory is performed. Many features generalise to p-branes in SL(p + 3) generalised geometries that form building blocks for the Ed(d)-invariant currents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We derive the 3D N = 1 superpotential for the closed string sector of type IIB supergravity on toroidal O5 orientifolds with co-calibrated G2 structure and RR background flux. We find that such compactifications can provide full closed string moduli stabilization on supersymmetric AdS 3 vacua, and once we include brane-supersymmetry-breaking we also find indication for the existence of classical 3D de Sitter solutions. The latter however are rather difficult to reconcile with the "shape" moduli stabilization and flux quantization. We also discuss the possibility of achieving scale separation in AdS 3 and dS 3 vacua, but such effects seem to be hindered by the geometric flux quantization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We classify the necessary and sufficient conditions to obtain the near-horizon geometry of extremal supersymmetric rotating black holes embedded in 11d supergravity which are associated to rotating M2-branes. Such rotating black holes admit an AdS2 near-horizon geometry which is fibered by the transverse spacetime directions. In this paper we allow for the most general fibration over AdS2 with a flux configuration permitting rotating M2-branes. Using G-structure techniques we rewrite the conditions for supersymmetry in terms of differential equations on an eight-dimensional balanced space. The 9d compact internal space is a U(1)-fibration over this 8d base. The geometry is constrained by a master equation reminiscent of the one found in the non-rotating case. We give a Lagrangian from which the equations of motion may be derived, and show how the asymptotically AdS4 electrically charged Kerr-Newman black hole in 4d N = 2 supergravity is embedded in the classification. In this work, we extend a theory which describes a linearly self-dual exact 3-form field in six dimensional spacetime within the formalism of arXiv:1511.08220 and arXiv:1903.12196 to an action which fully describes an M5-brane in the eleven-dimensional supergravity background. The action we obtain has all the required symmetries including kappa-symmetry. Although the derivation of the action and the proof the symmetries do not require one to express the action explicitly in terms of the original field contents, we also give an initial attempt to give this expression. We use on-shell methods to study the non-supersymmetric and supersymmetric low-energy S-matrix on a probe D3-brane, including both the 1-loop contributions of massless states as well as the effects of higher-derivative operators. Our results include: (1) A derivation of the duality invariance of Born-Infeld electrodynamics as the dimensional oxidation of the group of spatial rotations transverse to a probe M2-brane; this is done using a novel implementation of subtracted on-shell recursion. (2) The first explicit loop-level BCJ double-copy in a non-gravitational model, namely the calculation of the 4-point self-dual amplitude of non-supersymmetric Born-Infeld. (3) From previous results for n-point self-dual 1-loop BI amplitudes and the conjectured dimension-shifting relations in Yang-Mills, we obtain an explicit all-multiplicity, at all orders in E, expression for the 1-loop integrand of the MHV sector of N = 4 DBI. (4) For all n > 4, the explicitly integrated duality-violating 1-loop amplitudes (self-dual and next-to-self-dual in pure BI as well as MHV in N = 4 DBI) are shown to be removable at O ϵ 0 by adding finite local counterterms; we propose that this may be true more generally at 1-loop order. (5) We find that in non-supersymmetric Born-Infeld, not all finite local counterterms needed to restore electromagnetic duality can be constructed using the double-copy with higher-derivative corrections, suggesting a fundamental tension between electromagnetic duality and color-kinematics duality at loop-level. Finally we comment on oxidation of duality symmetries in supergravity and the parallels it has to the M2-brane to D3-brane oxidation demonstrated in this paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
