Abstract

We present the results of a search for first generation scalar leptoquarks pairs (S-1 (S)over-bar(1)) in 110 +/- 7 pb(-1) of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We assume both leptoquarks decay to an electron and a quark. Three candidate events, with masses below 140 GeV/c(2) and consistent with background expectations, are observed. We obtain a 95% confidence level upper limit on the production cross section as a function of the leptoquark mass. Using a next-to-leading order calculation of S-1 (S)over-bar(1) production, we exclude scalar leptoquarks with mass less than 213 GeV/c(2) at 95% C.L. for a branching ratio into eq equal to 1.

Abstract

We search for new particles that decay into b{ovr b} and are produced with W bosons in p{ovr p} collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV. The search uses 109 {+-} 7 pb{sup -1} accumulated by the CDF experiment at Fermilab. We select events with an e{nu} or {mu}{nu}, and two jets, one of the b tagged. The number of events and the two-jet mass distribution are consistent with expectations. Using W+Higgs production as a model for the acceptance, we set an upper limit on the production cross section times branching ratio for the new particle ranging from 14 to 19 pb (95% C.L.) as the particle mass varies from 70 to 120 GeV/c{sup 2}.

Abstract

We have searched for heavy neutral gauge bosons (2’) in jjp collisions at Js = 1.8 TeV. The data were obtained using the CDF detector during 19921993 run corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7f0.7 pb-‘. We present a 95% confidence level upper limit on the production cross section times branching ratio of 2’ decaying into dielectrons as a function of 2’ mass. Assuming Standard Model coupling strengths, we exclude a 2’ with mass less than 505 GeV/c 2. We also present lower mass limits for 2’ bosons from & models and the Alternative Left-Right Model. PACS numbers: 13.85.Rm, 12.15.Cc, 14.80.Er Neutral gauge bosons in addition to the 2’ are expected in many extensions of the Standard Model [l]. These models typically specify the strengths of the couplings of such bosons to quarks and leptons but make no mass predictions [2]. In up collisions, 2’ bosons may be observed directly via their decay to lepton pairs. Observation of a 2’ boson would provide dramatic evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model. To date there is no experimental evidence for the existence of any 2’ [3]. The current experimental 2’ mass limit Mzt > 412 GeV/c2 (95% C.L.) was established by the CDF collaboration [4] with the assumption that the coupling strengths of the 2’ to quarks and leptons were the same as those for the Standard Model (SM) 2’. This result was based upon data collected during the 1988-89 run with an integrated luminosity of 4 pb-’ and used both the dielectron [5] and dimuon decay modes. We report an extension of this search using 19.7 pb* of integrated luminosity from the 1992-93 run. Results reported here are obtained using only the dielectron decay mode. We present a 95% confidence level upper limit on the production cross section times branching ratio of 2’ decaying into dielectrons (g(Z) . B(Z’ + ee)). Mass limits are 5 again derived assuming SM coupling strengths. In addition, we present 2’ mass limits using several different theoretical models based on the Es symmetry group [6][‘7] and one limit based upon an Alternative Left-Right Model [8]. The CDF detector has been described in detail elsewhere [9]. We give a brief description of the components relevant to this analysis. Momenta of charged particles are measured in the Central Tracking Chamber (CTC), which is immersed in a 1.4 T axial magnetic field. Outside the CTC, electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters are arranged in a projective tower geometry. There are three separate pseudorapidity (7) regions of calorimeters, central, end-plug, and forward, where 7 = ln(tan $) and 0 is the polar angle with respect to the direction of the proton beam. Each region has an electromagnetic calorimeter and behind it a hadronic calorimeter. For this analysis we use electrons detected in the central (CEM) or end-plug (PEM) regions. The CEM covers ]q] 9 GeV or an energy cluster in the PEM with ET > 20 GeV. If the cluster was in the CEM the trigger also required a coincidence with a track of transverse momentum PT > 9.2 GeV/c. In addition, the trigger required that the ratio of hadronic to electromagnetic energy (HAD/EM) in the trigger cluster be less than 12.5%. For electrons with 25 150 GeV), the energy deposited

Abstract

The lifetimes of the ${\mathit{B}}^{+}$ and ${\mathit{B}}^{0}$ mesons have been measured using fully reconstructed decays. In a sample of \ensuremath{\sim}49 600J/\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ decays recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab, 148\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}16 ${\mathit{B}}^{+}$ and 121\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}16${\mathit{B}}^{0}$ mesons have been reconstructed using the silicon vertex detector. Unbinned likelihood fits to the proper lifetime distributions of these B mesons give ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}^{+}$=1.61\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.16 (stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05 (syst) ps, ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}^{0}$=1.57\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.18 (stat) \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.08 (syst) ps, and ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}^{+}$/${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}^{0}$=1.02\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.16 (stat) \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05 (syst).

Abstract

We report on a measurement of the branching fraction of the Cabibbo-suppressed decay ${B}_{u}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$, where $J/\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$. The data were collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during 1992--1995 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of $110{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ in $\overline{p}p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1.8\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{TeV}$. A signal of ${28}_{\ensuremath{-}9}^{+10}$ events is observed and we determine the ratio of branching fractions $B({B}_{u}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+})/B({B}_{u}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}{K}^{+})$ to be $[{5.0}_{\ensuremath{-}1.7}^{+1.9}(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.1(\mathrm{syst})]%$. Using the world average value for $B({B}_{u}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}{K}^{+})$, we calculate the branching fraction $B({B}_{u}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+})$ to be $({5.0}_{\ensuremath{-}1.9}^{+2.1})\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$. We also search for the decay ${B}_{c}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ and report a $95%$ confidence level limit on $\ensuremath{\sigma}({B}_{c}^{+})B({B}_{c}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+})/\ensuremath{\sigma}({B}_{u}^{+})B({B}_{u}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}{K}^{+})$ as a function of the ${B}_{c}^{+}$ lifetime.

Abstract

We report on the reconstruction of the decay mode B{sup 0o} {yields} J/{psi}K{sup 0}{sub s} using 19.3 pb{sup -1} of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab in p{bar p} collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV. A signal of 41.8{+-}6.9 events, with a signal-to-background ratio of 9:1, is observed. Three additional decay modes B{sup +} {yields} J/{psi}K{sup +}, B{sup 0} {yields} J/{psi}K{sup *}(892){sup 0}, and B{sup +} {yields} J/{psi}K{sup *}(892){sup +} are reconstructed. We measure three ratios of branching ratios, each one relative to the B{sup +} {yields} J/{psi}K{sup +} mode. We also report the ratio of decay rates, {gamma}(B {yields} J/{psi}K{sup *})/{gamma}(B {yields} J/{psi}K), for the vector-vector relative to the vector-pseudoscalar modes, to be 1.32{+-}0.23(stat){+-}0.16(syst).

Abstract

We present the results of a search for second generation leptoquarks ${S}_{2}$ using $19.3{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ of data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1.8$ TeV during the 1992--93 collider run. We have searched for ${S}_{2}\overline{{S}_{2}}$ pairs assuming that each leptoquark decays to a muon $+$ quark with a branching ratio $\ensuremath{\beta}$. We find two candidate events, consistent with an expected background of $1.11\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.48$. We obtain upper limits on $\ensuremath{\sigma}(p\overline{p}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{S}_{2}\overline{{S}_{2}}){\ensuremath{\beta}}^{2}$ as a function of ${M}_{{S}_{2}}$. Using a Monte Carlo prediction for ${S}_{2}\overline{{S}_{2}}$ pair production, we exclude ${M}_{{S}_{2}}l131\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{GeV}/{c}^{2}$ for $\ensuremath{\beta}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1$ and ${M}_{{S}_{2}}l96\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{GeV}/{c}^{2}$ for $\ensuremath{\beta}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.5$ at 95% C.L.

Abstract

We present the results of a search in [ital [bar p]] [ital p] collisions at [radical][ital s] =1.8 TeV for the top quark decaying to a charged Higgs bosson ([ital H][sup [plus minus]]). We search for dilepton final states from the decay chain [ital t] [ital [bar t]][r arrow][ital HH] (or [ital HW], or [ital WW])+[ital b] [ital [bar b]][r arrow][ital ll]+[ital X]. In a sample of 19.3 pb[sup [minus]1] collected during 1992--93 with the Collider Detector at Fermilab, we observe 2 events with a background estimation of 3.0[plus minus]1.0 events. Limits at 95% C.L. in the (M[sub top],M[sub [ital H][sup [plus minus]]]) plane are presented. For the case [ital M][sub top][lt][ital M][sub [ital W]]+[ital M][sub [ital b]], we exclude at 95% C.L. the entire ([ital M][sub top],[ital M][sub H[plus minus]]) plane for the branching ratio [ital B]([ital H][r arrow][tau][nu]) larger than 75%. We also interpret the results in terms of the parameter tan[beta] of two-Higgs-doublet models.

Abstract

We present results of a search for a first-generation leptoquark [ital scrS][sub 1] in [ital [bar p]p] collisions at [radical][ital s] =1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. Using 4.05 pb[sup [minus]1] of data collected during the 1988--1989 CDF run, we have searched for evidence of [ital scrS][sub 1][ital scr[bar S]1] production assuming that each leptoquark decays to an electron+quark pair with a branching ratio [beta]. Three events with two high energy electrons and two high energy jets were found, but are consistent with [ital Z][sup 0] decay. No events were found in the signal region. Assuming a short lived scalar leptoquark with Yukawa coupling strength [lambda][approx gt]2[times]10[sup [minus]7], we exclude [sigma][beta][sup 2][gt]55(4.0) pb at 95% C.L. for [ital M][sub [ital s][ital c][ital r][ital S]]=45(125) GeV/[ital c][sup 2]. Using a Monte Carlo prediction for [sigma]([ital [bar p]p][r arrow][ital scrS][sub 1][ital scr[bar S]1]+[ital X]), we exclude [ital M][sub [ital s][ital c][ital r][ital S]][lt]113(80) GeV/[ital c][sup 2] for [beta]=100(50)%.

Abstract

We report the full reconstruction of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$ mesons through the decay chain ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi} \ensuremath{\gamma}, J/\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$, using data obtained at the Collider Detector at Fermilab in 2.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ of p\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}p collisions at \ensuremath{\surd}s =1.8 TeV. This exclusive ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$ sample is used to measure the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$-meson production cross section times branching fractions. We obtain \ensuremath{\sigma}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}B=3.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4(stat${)}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1.1}^{+1.2}$(syst) nb for ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$ mesons decaying to J/\ensuremath{\psi} with ${\mathit{p}}_{\mathit{T}}$g6.0 GeV/c and pseudorapidity \ensuremath{\Vert}\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\Vert}0.5. From this and the inclusive J/\ensuremath{\psi} cross section we calculate the inclusive b-quark cross section to be 12.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}4.5 \ensuremath{\mu}b for ${\mathit{p}}_{\mathit{T}}^{\mathit{b}}$g8.5 GeV/c and \ensuremath{\Vert}${\mathit{y}}^{\mathit{b}}$\ensuremath{\Vert}1.

Abstract

We have searched for the $b$-flavored baryon decay ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{b}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{0}$ in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). In the $\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{0}$ invariant-mass distribution we observe a flat distribution and a small number of events, consistent with no signal. Using the $b$-quark cross section measured by the CDF we put an upper limit on the $b\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{b}$ production fraction times the branching ratio $F({\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{b})B({\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{b}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{0})$ of 0.50\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ at 90% confidence level.
