Bamboo is a material with excellent development prospects. It is increasingly used in furniture, decoration, building, and bridge construction. In this study, Furfurylated bamboo bundles and phenol-formaldehyde resin were used to make bamboo-scrimber composites (BSCs) via molding-recombination and hot-pressing processes. The effects of the impregnation mode, furfuryl-alcohol concentration, and curing temperature on the various physical–mechanical properties and durability of the composites were evaluated. Scanning-electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the microstructural differences. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to investigate changes in the chemical constituents. The heat resistance was also investigated using thermogravimetric analysis. The results showed that the density of the furfurylated BSC increased by up to 22% compared with that of the BSC-C with the same paving mode. The furfurylated BSCs had lower moisture contents: the average moisture content of the furfurylated BSCs was 25~50% lower than that of the BSC-C. In addition, the furfurylated BSCs showed better dimensional stability and durability, since the decay-resistance grade of the BSCs was raised from decay resistance (class II) to strong decay resistance (class I). In terms of the mechanical properties, the furfurylation had a slight negative effect on the mechanical strength of the BSCs, and the modulus of rupture (MOR) and horizontal shear strength (HSS) of the BSCs were increased to a certain extent under most of the treatment conditions. In particular, the highest HSS for indoor use and MOR of the furfurylated BSCs increased by 21% and 9% compared with those of the untreated BSCs, respectively. The SEM results indicated that the FA resin effectively filled in the bamboo-cell cavities and vessels, and the modified bamboo-parenchyma cells were compressed more tightly and evenly. The FTIR and XPS spectroscopy showed that the hydroxyl group of carboxylic acid of the bamboo-cell-wall component reacted with that of the furan ring, and the cellulose and hemicellulose underwent acid hydrolysis to a certain extent after the furfurylation. Overall, the present study highlights the potential of furfurylation as a modification method to enhance BSC products. Further research should focus on improving the ability of furfurylated BSCs to prevent the growth of Botryodiplodia theobromae. Additionally, the influence of furfuryl-alcohol resin on the bonding strengths of PF adhesives should be further clarified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Low-molecular-weight 1,3-dimethylol-4,5-dihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU) was used to modify bamboo strips catalyzed by maleic anhydride. In this study, response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to optimize the treatment conditions for DMDHEU modification of bamboo. Three selected parameters, DMDHEU concentration, curing temperature, and curing time, were further optimized using response surface methodology via the box behnken design (BBD). The equilibrium moisture content (EMC), water absorption (WA), anti-swelling efficiency (ASE), mechanical properties, and mold resistances to (Aspergillus niger V. Tiegh, Penicillium citrinum Thom, Trichoderma viride Pers. ex Fr., and Botryodiplodia theobromae Pat.) were evaluated as the dependent variables. The results show that the dimensional stability and mold resistance of bamboo were enhanced remarkably, and the modulus of rupture (MOR) of bamboo was decreased after DMDHEU modification, while the modulus of elasticity (MOE) changed slightly, and the parallel-to-grain compressive strength (CS) was increased. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to investigate the effect of modification on the bamboo microstructure and functional groups. In the context of SEM, TGA, and FTIR analyses, the thermal stability of bamboo modified with a medium or high concentration of DMDHEU was improved, the starch granules in the parenchyma cells of modified bamboo dissolved, and few resins were distributed in the lumens of treated bamboo. The natural abundance, polymer stability, biodegradability, and natural antimicrobial properties of lignin open a wide range of potential applications aiming for sustainability. In this work, the effects of 1% (w/w) softwood kraft lignin nanoparticles (SLNPs) on the physicochemical properties of polybutylene succinate (PBS) composite films were investigated. Incorporation of SLNPs into neat PBS enhanced Td from 354.1 °C to 364.7 °C, determined through TGA, whereas Tg increased from −39.1 °C to −35.7 °C while no significant change was observed in Tm and crystallinity, analyzed through DSC. The tensile strength of neat PBS increased, to 35.6 MPa, when SLNPs were added to it. Oxygen and water vapor permeabilities of PBS with SLNPs decreased equating to enhanced barrier properties. The good interactions among SLNPs, thymol, and PBS matrix, and the high homogeneity of the resultant PBS composite films, were determined through FTIR and FE-SEM analyses. This work revealed that, among the PBS composite films tested, PBS + 1% SLNPs + 10% thymol showed the strongest microbial growth inhibition against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Lasiodiplodia theobromae, both in vitro, through a diffusion method assay, and in actual testing on active packaging of mango fruit (cultivar "Nam Dok Mai Si Thong"). SLNPs could be an attractive replacement for synthetic substances for enhancing polymer properties without compromising the biodegradability of the resultant material, and for providing antimicrobial functions for active packaging applications. Soybean molasses was studied for the first time as a raw material for the fermentative production of (1 → 6)-β-d-glucan (lasiodiplodan) by Lasiodiplodia theobromae MMPI fungus. The work included characterization of soybean molasses, assessment of cultivation medium and nutritional supplementation, saccharification, fermentation of unhydrolyzed and hydrolyzed molasses, and characterization of lasiodiplodan. Crude soybean molasses showed high concentrations of monosaccharides (glucose: 13.26 g/L, galactose: 9.53 g/L and fructose: 1.99 g/L) and oligosaccharides (sucrose: 74.51 g/L, raffinose: 96.58 g/L, and stachyose: 114.02 g/L). Clarification of molasses promoted reduction of 60% of the total phenolic contents, and showed high-nutritional quality not requiring medium supplementation for fungal growth and lasiodiplodan production. Lasiodiplodia theobromae was able to assimilate the sugars from molasses (YC: 98.25%), including the oligosaccharides, thus no need for prior acid-hydrolysis for saccharification. Maximum production (1.06 g/L), yield (0.13 g/g) and volumetric productivity of lasiodiplodan (0.01 g/L h) were verified in fermentations using unhydrolyzed molasses. Both lasiodiplodan samples demonstrated high thermal stability, and presented three stages of mass-loss; the first at 150 ºC, followed by two events between 250 and 525 °C. FT-IR spectra showed characteristic signs of lasiodiplodan including bands at 1060 and 1600 cm−1 corresponding to symmetrical stretching of C–O–C (characteristic group of sugars) and glucose ring vibration, respectively. Exocellular (1→6)-β-d-glucan (lasiodiplodan) produced by the fungus Lasiodiplodia theobromae MMPI was derivatized by carboxymethylation using different concentrations of a derivatizing agent. Lasiodiplodan was derivatized by carboxymethylation in an attempt to increase its solubility and enhance its biological activities. Carboxymethylglucans with degrees of substitution (DS) of 0.32, 0.47, 0.51, 0.58, and 0.68 were produced and characterized. FTIR analysis showed a band of strong intensity at 1600 cm−1 and an absorption band at 1421 cm−1, resulting from asymmetric and symmetrical stretching vibrations, respectively, of the carboxymethyl group COO- in the carboxymethylated samples. Thermal analysis showed that native lasiodiplodan (LN) and carboxymethylated derivatives (LC) exhibited thermal stability up to 200–210 °C. X-ray diffractometry demonstrated that both native and carboxymethylated lasiodiplodan presented predominantly an amorphous nature. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that carboxymethylation promoted morphological changes in the biopolymer and increased porosity, and alveolar structures were observed along the surface. The introduction of carboxymethyl groups in the macromolecule promoted increased solubility and potentiated the hydroxyl radical-scavenging activity, suggesting a correlation between degree of substitution and antioxidant activity.
