Weeds and microorganisms interacting with their rhizosphere may influence nutrient absorption, which is an important factor for plant competition. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the microbiological activity, inorganic phosphorus solubilization (Pi) and acid phosphatase in the cultivated soil, in a combination of soybean (Glycine max) plants and weeds. Soybeans were cultivated in monoculture and in competition with Bidens pilosa, Brachiaria decumbens (Syn. Urochloa decumbens) and Eleusine indica, under two conditions: a) plants competing without contact between the roots b) plants competing with contact between the roots. A nylon screen with a 50 µm mesh was added to prevent contact between the roots of the species in competition so that the substratum could be separated in the vase. The experiment was conducted in randomized blocks, with four replications. The soybeans in competition with weeds led to lower oxidation of organic matter per unit of microbial biomass, resulting in a lower metabolic quotient, compared with the soybean monoculture. The contact between soybean roots and B. pilosa, B. decumbens and E. indica maintained a strong influence, raising the solubilization of Pi, respectively valued at 51, 39 and 31% in relation to the cultivation of each species with a nylon screen. Microbiological activity, inorganic phosphorus solubilization and acid phosphatase were altered by plant species, combinations of weeds and soybean plants in competition; by root contact in some cases. Thus, the microbiological activity of the soil can influence competition strategies and plant development. RESUMO: As plantas daninhas e os microrganismos associados à sua rizosfera podem apresentar interações que influenciam na habilidade de absorção de nutrientes, fator importante em plantas em competição. Dessa forma, avaliou-se neste trabalho a atividade microbiana, o potencial de solubilização de fósforo inorgânico (Pi) e a atividade de fosfatases ácidas em solo cultivado com combinações de soja (Glycine max) e plantas daninhas. Para isso, cultivou-se a soja em monocultivo e em competição com Bidens pilosa, Brachiaria decumbens (Syn. Urochloa decumbens) e Eleusine indica, em duas condições de competição: a) sem contato entre raízes das espécies; e b) com contato entre raízes das espécies. Para evitar o contato entre raízes das espécies em competição, bem como separar o substrato em um mesmo vaso, utilizou-se uma tela de náilon de 50 µm de abertura. O experimento foi conduzido em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. A soja em competição com plantas daninhas reduziu a oxidação da matéria orgânica por unidade de biomassa microbiana, diminuindo o quociente metabólico, em comparação com a soja em monocultivo. O contato entre as raízes da soja e das espécies de plantas daninhas promoveu o aumento da solubilização de Pi em 51%, 39% e 31% para B. pilosa, B. decumbens e E. indica, respectivamente, em relação ao cultivo de cada espécie com a tela de separação. A atividade microbiana, a solubilização do Pi e a atividade de fosfatases ácidas foram alteradas pelas espécies de plantas e, pelas combinações de plantas daninhas e soja em competição, principalmente, quando houve contato entre raízes. Assim, a atividade microbiológica do solo pode influenciar nas estratégias de competição e desenvolvimento das plantas.

As an alternative to control of resistant biotypes, farmers have resorted to the use of herbicides that have residual soil activity and good pre-emergence action. One of the most used mixtures in Brazil is that of sulfentrazone + glyphosate. When a herbicide has a pre-emergence action, small leaching of its molecules is necessary for its superficial incorporation into the soil, where most of the weed seeds are found. However, if excessive leaching occurs, the herbicide may have reduced efficiency in controlling weed, increasing the risks of groundwater contamination. In this study, sulfentrazone leaching was evaluated in columns with soil, in isolated applications and in mixture with formulations of glyphosate (Roundup Ready®, Roundup Ultra® and Zapp Qi®). For this, the columns were filled with samples of Red-Yellow Latosol, collected in the 0-20 cm depth layer. After moistening the columns to near field capacity, the herbicides were applied to the top and, 24 hours later, a 60 mm rainfall was simulated. After 72 hours, the columns were sectioned in 5 cm segments, collecting the soil from each segment. In these samples, indicator plants (Sorghum bicolor) were cultivated for the presence of the herbicide. It is concluded that, in general, glyphosate does not alter the leaching potential of sulfentrazone in the Red-Yellow Latosol. However, mixtures with Roundup Ready® and Zapp Qi® reduce the sorptive forces of sulfentrazone to soil colloids. Therefore, in some types of soil, herbicide desorption may occur with greater intensity, making its availability in the soil solution more difficult. This may result in better control of plants and/or intoxication of sensitive crops. RESUMO: Como alternativa de controle de biótipos resistentes, os agricultores têm recorrido ao uso de herbicidas que possuem atividade residual no solo e têm boa ação em pré-emergência. Uma das misturas mais utilizadas no Brasil é a de sulfentrazone + glyphosate. Quanto um herbicida tem ação em pré-emergência, pequena lixiviação de suas moléculas é necessária para sua incorporação superficial no solo, onde se encontram a maioria das sementes das plantas daninhas. No entanto, ocorrendo lixiviação excessiva, o herbicida pode ter sua eficiência no controle das plantas daninhas reduzida, aumentando os riscos de contaminação do lençol freático. Neste trabalho foi avaliada a lixiviação do sulfentrazone, em colunas com solo, em aplicações de forma isolada e em mistura com formulações de glyphosate (Roundup Ready®, Roundup Ultra® e Zapp Qi®). Para isso, as colunas foram preenchidas com amostras de Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo, coletadas na camada de 0-20 cm de profundidade. Após umedecimento das colunas, até próximo à capacidade de campo, aplicaram-se os herbicidas no topo e, 24 horas depois, foi simulada chuva de 60 mm. Após 72 horas, as colunas foram seccionadas em segmentos de 5 cm, coletando-se o solo de cada segmento. Nessas amostras foram cultivadas plantas indicadoras (Sorghum bicolor) da presença do herbicida. Conclui-se que, em geral, o glyphosate não altera o potencial de lixiviação do sulfentrazone no Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo. No entanto, as misturas com Roundup Ready® e Zapp Qi® reduzem as forças sortivas do sulfentrazone aos coloides do solo. Em razão disso, em alguns tipos de solo poderá ocorrer com maior intensidade a dessorção do herbicida, tornando maior a sua disponibilidade na solução do solo. Isso poderá resultar em melhor controle das plantas e/ou intoxicação das culturas sensíveis.

The great diversity of plant species in pastures of the Brazilian Cerrado with distinct ecophysiological characteristics indicates the possibility of finding, in the cellular content of this flora, chemical compounds with potential for use in agriculture and human and animal health. Three steps are necessary to prove this hypothesis: phytochemical prospecting, characterization of secondary metabolites, and studies on the biological activities of these metabolites present in these plants. The chemical profile of secondary metabolites present in five species of the Brazilian Cerrado (Davilla elliptica, Remijia ferruginea, Luehea paniculata, Anacardium occidentale, and Acosmium dasycarpum) was traced in this research. These plant species were collected in pasture areas of Felício dos Santos, Minas Gerais. The samples were dried and submitted to two types of extract (ethanolic and hexanic). By using specific chemical reactions, the presence of coumarins, triterpenes/steroids, and anthracenosides was observed in the hexanic extracts, while the presence of alkaloids, triterpenes/steroids, flavonoids, tannins, reducing compounds, and anthocyanins was observed in the ethanolic extracts. The species presented diverse classes of compounds. However, triterpenes/steroids, tannins, reducing compounds and anthocyanins were found in all species, being the use of the solvent ethanol the most efficient in extracting the compounds. The species D. elliptica presented the highest number of classes of compounds. The widespread application in folk medicine justifies further studies on the biological activity of different metabolites in agriculture and health areas.

Tembotrione is registered in Brazil for maize and is used in large areas of the country in each harvest. In recent years, producers have reported carryover effects of this herbicide in succeeding crops to maize. This fact can be attributed to tembotrione recommendations without knowing their interactions with tropical soils colloids. In this study, using high-performance liquid chromatography, it was possible to evaluate the influence of chemical and physical attributes on the sorption and desorption of tembotrione, as well as its metabolite AE 1417268, on seven soils from different regions of Brazil. The coefficients referring to sorption and desorption, as well as the hysteresis index (Kf, 1/n and H) of tembotrione and its metabolite were influenced by pH, clay content and organic matter. In soil samples with low levels of clay and organic matter, values of sorption coefficients were reduced as pH increased. The desorption of tembotrione and its metabolite in all soils were low, mainly in the clayey ones and in soils with higher organic matter content. The sorption of tembotrione and its metabolites varies with the attributes of soil, presenting a direct relation with clay and organic matter contents and an inverse one with soil pH. The desorption of tembotrione and its metabolite decreased with the increase in clay and organic matter contents in the evaluated soils.

The hormesis effect of 2,4-D, applied at two stages of soybean development, on the physiological components of crop yield, was investigated. Soybean seeds of the cultivar ‘AG 3680 IPRO’ were sown in pots containing 7 L of a substrate and kept in a greenhouse. A randomized complete block design with four replicates was used. Eighteen treatments were tested, arranged in a split-plot scheme. The plots consisted of two stages of herbicide application (V4 and V6), and the split-plots were arranged by nine 2,4-D doses (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, and 50 g ha-1). At the time of harvest, 100 days after sowing, significant interactions between crop development stages and 2,4-D doses were observed for the number of nodes in the main stem (NNMS) and the number of pods per plant (NPP). Both NNMS and NPP were not affected by 2,4-D during V6, but they increased with doses up to 20.2 g ha-1 and 22.5 g ha-1, respectively, during V4 and declined at higher doses according to a quadratic model, thus characterizing hermetic effect. Regardless of the application stage, the number of grains per plant and weight of a thousand grains were reduced as doses increased. However, the grain number and grain mass per plant reached maximum values for doses of 20.3 g ha-1 and 12.9 g ha-1, respectively. It was concluded that 2,4-D causes hormesis effects on the soybean crop ‘AG 3680 IPRO’ pot-grown in greenhouse conditions, regardless of the application stages herein tested. RESUMO: Investigou-se o efeito hormético do 2,4-D, aplicado na soja em dois estádios de desenvolvimento, sobre os componentes fisiológicos de produtividade da cultura. Sementes de soja da variedade ‘AG 3680 IPRO’ foram semeadas em vasos contendo 7 L de substrato, mantidos em casas de vegetação. Foram avaliados 18 tratamentos no delineamento em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições, dispostos em esquema de parcelas subdivididas. As parcelas foram constituídas por dois estádios de desenvolvimento (V4 e V6), e as subparcelas, por nove doses de 2,4-D (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40 e 50 g ha-1). Na colheita, aos 100 dias após a semeadura, verificou-se interação significativa entre estádio e dose de 2,4-D para o número de nós na haste principal (NNHP) e para o número de vagens por planta (NDV). O NNHP e o NDV não foram afetados pelo 2,4-D em V6, mas em V4 eles aumentaram até as doses de 20,2 g ha-1 e 22,5 g ha-1, respectivamente, segundo modelo quadrático, declinando em doses maiores, conferindo o efeito hormético. Independentemente do estádio de aplicação, o número de grãos por vagem e o peso de mil grãos reduziram-se com o aumento da dose. Todavia, o número de grãos e a massa de grãos por planta atingiram valores máximos para as doses de 20,3 g ha-1 e 12,9 g ha-1, respectivamente. Concluiu-se que o 2,4-D promove hormese na cultura da soja ‘AG 3680 IPRO’, cultivada em vasos em casa de vegetação, independentemente dos estádios de aplicação testados.

Before recommending an herbicide, it is necessary to know its interactions with the soil attributes that will influence its sorption and half-life in the soil. This knowledge is an essential condition for minimizing any negative effects that may result from its application. However, due to the great diversity of soil and climate in Brazil, especially for products of recent use in the country, such as the herbicide tembotrione, this knowledge is often not available. This may be the main cause of occurrence of intoxication reports in crops carried out in succession to corn sprayed with this herbicide. In order to reduce possible impacts on successor crops and the contamination of surface and groundwater using the high-performance liquid chromatography, the tembotrione half-life was determined in soils with different attributes. The evaluated soils were a Red-Yellow Latosol with and without liming (Viçosa, MG), Red-Yellow Latosol (Rio Paranaíba, MG), Yellow Latosol (Sooretama, ES), and Red-Yellow Latosol with and without liming (Gurupi, TO). The results showed that liming might favor tembotrione degradation in the soil, as well as direct relationships between values of tembotrione half-life and contents of clay and soil organic matter. Tembotrione half-life in samples of Red-Yellow Latosol (without liming) collected in Viçosa and Rio Paranaíba, MG, was higher than 90 days, indicating carryover risks in successive crops to corn sprayed with tembotrione in these regions.

Available information on physical compatibility and stability of pesticide mixtures is scarce and often divergent. This knowledge is of fundamental importance in the success of pest, disease, and weed control programs. Compatibility and stability of two glyphosate formulations (WG and SL) in a mixture with fluazinam + deltamethrin + trifloxystrobin/cyproconazole at four diluted water concentrations and different times were evaluated under laboratory conditions. The evaluations were performed at the following time intervals: immediately after mixing and 1, 5, 10, 30, 120, 900, and 1,440 minutes after the mixing of pesticides. Scores were assigned on a scale ranging from 1 to 5, where 1 meant immediate separation of compounds and 5 the perfect mixture stability up to 30 minutes. The data were submitted to descriptive statistics and presented in tables. Mixture stability differed in glyphosate formulations and their concentrations due to the used spray solution volume. Distinct mixtures between glyphosate (SL) and deltamethrin, as well as between glyphosate (WG) and deltamethrin, were physically compatible when stirred again even after 24 hours at rest. The mixture containing glyphosate (SL), deltamethrin, and fluazinam and trifloxystrobin/ cyproconazole was incompatible at a volume of 30 L ha-1. RESUMO: As informações disponíveis sobre compatibilidade física e estabilidade de misturas de agrotóxicos são escassas e muitas vezes divergentes. Esse conhecimento é de fundamental importância no sucesso de programas de controle de insetos-praga, doenças e plantas daninhas. Nesta pesquisa foi avaliada, em condições laboratoriais, a compatibilidade e estabilidade de duas formulações de glyphosate (WG e SL) em mistura com fluazinam + deltametrina + trifloxistrobina/ciproconazol, todas em quatro concentrações diluídas em água e em tempos variáveis. As avaliações foram feitas nos intervalos de tempo assim descritos: imediatamente após a mistura; 1; 5; 10; 30; 120; 900; e 1.440 minutos após a mistura dos agrotóxicos. Atribuíram-se notas em uma escala variando de 1 a 5, em que 1 significava separação imediata dos compostos, e 5, estabilidade perfeita da mistura até os 30 minutos. Os dados foram submetidos à estatística descritiva e apresentados em forma de tabelas. A estabilidade das misturas diferiu quanto às formulações do glyphosate e suas concentrações, em razão do volume de calda a ser utilizado. As misturas distintas entre o glyphosate (SL) e o inseticida deltametrina, bem como entre o glyphosate (WG) e o inseticida deltametrina, apresentaram-se compatíveis fisicamente quando agitadas novamente, mesmo após 24 horas em repouso. A mistura contendo glyphosate (SL), o inseticida deltametrina e os fungicidas fluazinam e trifloxistrobina/ciproconazol foi incompatível no volume de 30 L ha-1.

The characterization of sorption-desorption for imazethapyr and imazapic in six agricultural soils was performed to assess the availability of these herbicides in pollution processes. In this pursuit, the batch equilibrium method and high-performance liquid chromatography were used. The magnitude of Kf values ranging from 0.38 to 2.52 mg1-n kg-1 Ln for imazethapyr and 0.43 to 2.72 mg1-n kg-1 Ln for imazapic indicate weak sorption in the evaluated soils. Soil pH (5.1 to 6.1) and iron oxalate affect sorption-desorption of both herbicides but the type and percentage of clay can be the main factor affecting these two processes. A high desorption percentage (>70%) was found in Regosol, Dystric Plinthosol, Ferralsol (for both herbicides), and Dystric Gleysol (only imazapic) soils, which implies in leaching risks of these imidazolinone herbicides into groundwater. The commercial mixture of imazethapyr and imazapic herbicides has been used for the control of red rice and several other species of weeds found in rice crops; this system called Clearfield. However, its use may limit the succession of non-tolerant crops for long residual activity. The research objective with this work was to determine the persistence of imazethapyr, imazapic and their mixture in three soils in the Brazilian state of Tocantins. Three experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design with four replications, each corresponding to the evaluated soil (Haplic Plinthosol (FX), red-yellow Latosol (LVA) and Haplic Gleysol (GX)). The treatments were arranged in a split plot design, with the allocated plots herbicides (imazethapyr and imazapic alone and commercial mixture) and the plots allocated the 11 evaluation times (1, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, 120, 135, 150 days after treatment (DAT)), and a control without application. Contacted up long residual effect of imazethapyr and commercial mixture of imazethapyr and imazapic, regardless of assessed soil. After 150 days of applying herbicides or the commercial mixture, their residues in the soil also inhibited approximately 94% of the mass of the dry matter accumulation of the indicator plants. When imazapic was applied alone, there was a higher dry matter accumulation of the indicator plants, indicating less residual effect of this herbicide in the soil and this was attributed to the lower dose of this herbicide applied. The attributes of the soil pH, texture and iron oxides were what most affected the persistence of the herbicides. It can be concluded that the persistence of imazethapyr and imazapic is too long in the Brazilian state of Tocantins soils and the use of these herbicides in the region should be avoided due to the high risk of the occurrence of carryover,or be well planned, as land use in rotation for susceptible crops. RESUMO O sistema de cultivo Clearfield(r) utiliza os herbicidas imazethapyr e imazapic no controle de plantas daninhas. Um dos principais problemas relacionados ao uso desse sistema é a restrição ao cultivo de outras culturas, causada pelo efeito residual dos herbicidas. Três experimentos foram realizados para avaliar a persistência do imazethapyr e imazapic em solos utilizados no sistema Clearfield(r). Cada experimento correspondeu a um solo avaliado: Plintossolo Háplico, Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo ou Gleissolo Háplico. O imazethapyr e o imazapic isolados e em mistura comercial foram aplicados no solo, e seu residual foi avaliado em 11 épocas (1, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, 120, 135 e 150 dias após o tratamento). A planta indicadora utilizada foi o sorgo (Sorghum vulgare). O imazethapyr e sua mistura com o imazapic causaram reduções da matéria seca das plantas indicadoras superiores a 94%, mesmo após 150 dias da aplicação, independentemente do solo avaliado. O imazapic causou menor inibição do crescimento do sorgo, indicando menor efeito residual desse herbicida nos solos. A mistura comercial teve maior persistência, comparada à aplicação isolada dos herbicidas. Independentemente do tipo de solo, a persistência do imazethapyr foi maior que a do imazapic.

Knowledge of herbicides sorption by colloids predicts its movement in the soil profile and its effectiveness in controlling weeds and crops poisoning when directly applied to the soil. This knowledge becomes even more important for herbicides which have long persistence in the soil. In this research, clomazone sorption was estimated by the biological method in Brazilian soil samples with different physical and chemical characteristics, cultivated with sugarcane crops. As an indicator of the presence of clomazone in the soil, Sorghum bicolor was used. The data relating to assessments of poisoning and accumulation of dry matter of the plants were subjected to multivariate analysis of similarity among variables. After that, clomazone doses that caused 50% of intoxication in sorghum plants grown (C50) as well as sorption ratio (SR) of the herbicide in different soil types were estimated. There was similarity greater than 80% for data regarding the percentage of intoxication and accumulated dry matter, with the option to use only those related to the first variable. RS and C50 were higher in Organosol and lower in red-yellow Latosol with and without changing the pH. It was concluded that the clomazone dose to be recommended must be differentiated for different soils, since the value of clomazone sorption in the soil is dependent on its attributes, and the organic matter content is of the utmost importance. RESUMO O conhecimento da sorção de herbicidas pelos coloides permite prever a sua movimentação no perfil do solo, além de sua eficiência no controle das plantas daninhas e da intoxicação de culturas, quando aplicado diretamente no solo. Esse conhecimento torna-se ainda mais importante para os herbicidas que apresentam longa persistência no solo. Nesta pesquisa foi estimada, por método biológico, a sorção do clomazone em amostras de solos brasileiros com diferentes características físicas e químicas, cultivados com a cultura da cana-de-açúcar. Como indicador da presença do clomazone no solo foi utilizado Sorghum bicolor. Os dados obtidos referentes às avaliações da intoxicação e ao acúmulo de matéria seca das plantas foram submetidos a análise multivariada de similaridade entre as variáveis. Após isso, foram estimadas as doses do clomazone que causaram 50% de intoxicação nas plantas de sorgo cultivadas (C50) e, também, a relação de sorção (RS) do herbicida nos diferentes tipos de solo. Verificou-se similaridade superior a 80% para os dados referentes a porcentagem de intoxicação e matéria seca acumulada, optando-se por utilizar apenas aqueles relativos à primeira variável. A RS e a C50 foram maiores no Organossolo e menores no Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo com e sem alteração do pH. Concluiu-se que a dose do clomazone a ser recomendada deve ser diferenciada para solos distintos, pois o valor da sorção do clomazone no solo é dependente de seus atributos, sendo o teor de matéria orgânica o de maior importância.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the weed community in a raw sugarcane renovation area with three soil managements and peanut sowing in succession. The experiment was conducted during the 2007/08 season on a raw sugarcane area harvested without prior burning in the last five cuts. A randomized block design with treatments arranged in a split plot and arranged in four replications was used. The main treatments consisted of three cropping systems: conventional tillage, minimum tillage and direct planting, and subplots consisted in the absence (resting) or presence of crop rotation with peanuts. After 135 days from planting peanuts and 180 days of sugarcane harvest, the number of weeds m-2 was counted and the shoot dry biomass of the weeds collected was determined. The data were interpreted by analysis of variance and the means were compared by Tukey's test at 5% probability so that phytosociological indices a, b, c e d were calculated. The use of soil conservation tillage and peanut in rotation with sugarcane in the renovation areas is effective in controlling weeds and suppression of weed species difficult to control like Cyperus rotundus, Commelina bengalensis, Urochloa plantaginea, and Digitaria nuda. Acredita-se ser possível reduzir o custo com o controle de plantas daninhas em áreas de reforma de cana crua adotando-se sistemas de manejos adequados. Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a comunidade infestante em área de reforma de cana crua submetida a diferentes manejos. Nesta pesquisa, utilizando-se uma área de um canavial colhido sem queima prévia, nos últimos cinco cortes foram avaliados três sistemas de cultivo: convencional, mínimo e plantio direto, associados ao pousio e cultivo do amendoim. Após 135 dias da semeadura do amendoim e 180 dias da colheita da cana-de-açúcar, foi feita a contagem do número de plantas daninhas por meetro quadrado e da matéria seca da parte aérea das plantas daninhas coletadas. Todos os dados obtidos foram analisados estatisticamente. Para interpretação dos resultados, utilizou-se o teste de Tukey a 5% de probabilidade e valores dos índices fitossociológicos a, b, c e d calculados. Conclui-se que a utilização do sistema de plantio direto associado ao cultivo do amendoim em rotação com a cana-de-açúcar em áreas de cana crua favorece o controle e a supressão de espécies de plantas daninhas de difícil controle, como Cyperus rotundus, Commelina benghalensis, Urochloa plantaginea e Digitaria nuda.

RESUMO O conhecimento dos fatores que influenciam a lixiviação dos herbicidas no solo é fundamental para sua utilização de forma segura, do ponto de vista técnico e ambiental. Neste trabalho, avaliou-se a mobilidade do sulfentrazone em quatro solos provenientes de uma área de reflorestamento da região Sul do Brasil (Planossolo Háplico, Argissolo Vermelho, Cambissolo Húmico e Neossolo Regolítico) e um Latosso Vermelho-Amarelo da Zona da Mata de Minas Gerais. As amostras de solo foram coletadas na profundidade de 0-20 cm e caracterizadas física e quimicamente. Os substratos foram colocados em colunas e, posteriormente, aplicou-se, nos topos delas, 1,0 kg ha-1 do herbicida, seguido de uma chuva simulada de 60 mm. Após a drenagem da água, foram semeadas ao longo da coluna sementes da espécie Sorghum bicolor , como planta bioindicadora da presença do sulfentrazone; 21 dias após o plantio, foi realizada a avaliação visual da intoxicação das plantas de sorgo e a coleta da parte aérea delas para determinação da matéria seca. O delineamento utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas. As colunas preenchidas com cada um dos solos constituíram as parcelas, e as 10 profundidades da coluna (0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, 20-25, 25-30, 30-35, 35-40, 40-45 e 45-50 cm), as subparcelas, mais uma testemunha sem herbicida para cada solo. Os teores de argila e matéria orgânica e o pH de cada solo influenciaram na mobilidade do sulfentrazone; solos com menores teores de argila e matéria orgânica apresentaram maior potencial de lixiviação desse herbicida. ABSTRACT Knowledge of factors that influence the leaching of herbicides in the soil is essential to use these products safely from a technical and environmental perspective. This study evaluated the mobility of sulfentrazone in four soils from southern Brazil (Haplic Planosol, Red Argisol, Humic Cambisol and Entisol) and a Red-Yellow Latosol from the Zona da Mata region in the state of Minas Gerais. Soil samples were collected at a depth of 0-20 cm and characterized physically and chemically. The substrates were placed in columns, and 1 kg ha-1 of the herbicide was subsequently applied on top of them, followed by a simulated rainfall of 60 mm. After draining the water, Sorghum bicolor seeds were sown along the column, as bioindicators of the presence of sulfentrazone; 21 days after planting, the presence of the sorghum plants was assessed visually, and the shoots were collected for determination of dry matter. The experimental design was completely randomized in subdivided plots, whereas the columns filled with each of the five soils were the main plots and the 10 column depths (0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, 20-25, 25-30, 30-35, 35-40, 40-45 and 45-50 cm) were the subplots. There was a herbicide-free control for each soil. Clay content, organic matter and pH of each soil influenced the mobility of sulfentrazone, and soils with lower clay and organic matter levels showed higher potential of leaching of sulfentrazone.

Currently, biomonitoring is a methodology used to verify the environmental impact of new technologies in the agricultural environment, highlighting edaphic entomofauna that is traditionally used as a bioindicator in this sort of research. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the edaphic entomofauna variation depending on glyphosate application in Roundup Ready soybeans. The experiment was carried out in Coimbra, MG during the 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 cropping seasons. The experimental design was a randomized block design with five replications. The treatments were: non-transgenic soybean with mechanical weeding of weeds; transgenic soybean with mechanical weeding of weeds; transgenic soybean with one glyphosate application and transgenic soybean with three glyphosate applications. The populations of the edaphic entomofauna were sampled during two crops. The insertion of the glyphosate tolerance gene did not affect the richness and the abundance of arthropods in the soil. The arthropod richness was reduced in treatments where glyphosate was applied one and three times. The glyphosate application in transgenic soybean reduced the density of the predatory mite Galumnidae (Acari); predator ants Neivamyrmex sp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and Solenopsis sp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae); and springtails Entomobryidae (Collembola), Hypogastrura sp. (Collembola: Hypogastruridae) and Onychiuridae (Collembola). Therefore, it is essential to follow the use recommendations of the herbicide glyphosate and adopt good agricultural practices that promote pesticide biodegradation, thereby contributing to the reduction of the toxicological potential of glyphosate on the edaphic entomofauna. RESUMO: Atualmente, o biomonitoramento tem sido uma metodologia bastante adotada para se verificar o impacto ambiental das novas tecnologias no meio agrícola, com destaque para a entomofauna edáfica, que é tradicionalmente utilizada como bioindicadora nesse tipo de pesquisa. Assim, objetivou-se com este estudo investigar a variação da entomofauna edáfica em função da aplicação do herbicida glyphosate em cultivos de soja Roundup Ready. O experimento foi realizado em Coimbra, MG, nas safras agrícolas de 2007/2008 e 2008/2009. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados com cinco repetições. Os tratamentos estudados foram: soja não transgênica com capina mecânica das plantas daninhas; soja transgênica com capina mecânica das plantas daninhas; soja transgênica com uma aplicação de glyphosate; e soja transgênica com três aplicações de glyphosate. As populações da entomofauna edáfica foram amostradas ao longo dos dois cultivos. A inserção do gene de tolerância ao herbicida glyphosate não afetou a riqueza e a abundância de artrópodes do interior do solo. A riqueza dos artrópodes foi reduzida nos tratamentos que receberam uma e três aplicações de glyphosate. A aplicação de glyphosate na soja transgênica reduziu a densidade do ácaro predador Galumnidae (Acari); das formigas predadoras Neivamyrmex sp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) e Solenopsis sp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae); e dos colêmbolos Entomobryidae (Collembola), Hypogastrura sp. (Collembola: Hypogastruridae) e Onychiuridae (Collembola). Diante disso, torna-se essencial atender às recomendações de uso do herbicida glyphosate e adotar boas práticas culturais que favoreçam a biodegradação de pesticidas, para assim contribuir com a redução do potencial toxicológico do glyphosate sobre a entomofauna edáfica.

In Brazil, sugarcane is grown in large areas. Weed control in sugarcane fields is done by chemical method, since it is more efficient and less expensive. In this method, herbicides that persist in the environment for long periods are used, among which there are hexazinone and diuron, which are applied in mixtures marketed by the industry. This research evaluated the sorption and desorption of hexazinone and diuron applied alone and in mixture, in two samples of Red-Yellow Latosols (LVAG and LVAV) and a Organosol (OR), with and without manure. Sorption isotherms were built using the batch equilibrium method and the identification and quantification of herbicides was obtained through a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV-Vis detector. There were high diuron sorption coefficients (Kf) in the soils. The hexazinone Kf values found were low in LVAG and LVAV soils, and they were high ground only in OR. In all soils, diuron and hexazinone showed higher Kf values when mixed. There was a direct relation between the addition of manure to the substrate and the Kf values . Higher desorption values (Kfd) in relation to those of sorption in LVAG and LVAV soils indicate gradual release of these herbicides in the soil solution when using organic fertilizer, showing increased sorption and desorption of these molecules; this is accentuated when they are mixed. In the Organosol, desorption was very low, and cannot be quantitated by the used method. It is possible to conclude that the incubation of LVAG and LVAV soil with manure helps both the process of sorption and desorption of herbicides. However, sorption and desorption in the Organosol is high indicating very low agrochemicals such strong bonds with soil colloids. RESUMO: No Brasil, a cana-de-açúcar é cultivada em extensas áreas. O controle das plantas daninhas nos canaviais é feito pelo método químico, pois é mais eficiente e de menor custo. Neste método são utilizados herbicidas que persistem no ambiente por longos períodos. Dos produtos recomendados para a cultura, os mais utilizados são o diuron e o hexazinone, aplicados isoladamente ou mistura comercializada pela indústria. Nesse sentido, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a sorção e dessorção do hexazinone e do diuron, aplicados de forma isolada e em mistura, em duas amostras de Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo (LVAG e LVAV), com e sem adição de esterco, e em um Organossolo (OR) sem adição de esterco. Primeiramente, foi determinado o tempo de equilíbrio dos herbicidas no solo pelo método batch equilibrium, e a identificação e quantificação dos herbicidas foram feitas por cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência (HPLC); em seguida, determinaram-se as isotermas de sorção e dessorção. Observaram-se elevados coeficientes de sorção (Kf) do diuron nos solos estudados. Os valores de Kf do hexazinone encontrados foram baixos nos solos LVAG e LVAV e elevados apenas no solo OR. Em todos os solos, o diuron e o hexazinone apresentaram valores de Kf maiores quando em mistura. Ocorreu relação direta entre a adição de esterco ao substrato e os valores do Kf. Maiores valores de dessorção (Kfd) em relação aos da sorção nos solos LVAG e LVAV indicam liberação gradual desses herbicidas na solução dos solos quando se fazem adubações orgânicas, indicando o aumento da sorção e dessorção dessas moléculas, acentuando-se quando em mistura. No Organosolo, a dessorção foi muito baixa e não pôde ser quantificada pelo método utilizado. Conclui-se que a aplicação da mistura diuron+hexazinone aumenta a sorção desses herbicidas ao solo. A recomendação do hexazinone isolado deve levar em consideração o teor de matéria orgânica do solo (MOS). O diuron em aplicação isolada apresenta alta sorção no solo. A dessorção apresenta alta magnitude em relação à sorção nos solos com baixo teor de MOS. No OR, a dessorção é baixa e por isso não pôde ser quantificada. Existe relação direta entre a adição de esterco ao substrato e a sorção nos solos. A incubação dos solos de baixo teor de MOS com esterco favorece tanto o processo de sorção quanto o de dessorção dos herbicidas.

Studies on herbicide behavior in soils may be performed using biological and chemical methods. The efficiency of the biological method depends on the indicator species sensitivity to low herbicide concentrations in the soil solution. Among the herbicides commonly used in Brazil for corn cultivation, tembotrione stands out. In the last agricultural seasons, the intoxication of some crops when cultivated in succession to corn has been reported, which may be attributed to tembotrione recommendations without the knowledge of their interactions with colloids of tropical soils. In this research, we selected an indicator plant species of tembotrione residues in the soil after sorting 12 species. The sorption of this herbicide was estimated in two Oxisols (Latossolo Amarelo and Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo, Brazilian Soil Classification) and in a Histosol (Organossolo, Brazilian Soil Classification) with different attributes. Initially, after sorting the 12 plant species, the two most efficient in detecting tembotrione in the soil were selected. In the second stage, the most sensitive species was selected. In the third stage, tembotrione sorption was assessed in the three soils by using the selected species. Among the 12 species, Beta vulgaris and Brassica oleracea var. capitata were the most efficient in detecting tembotrione at low concentrations in the soil, being B. vulgaris (beet) the most sensitive. Thus, due to its ease of cultivation, high sensitivity, and fast initial growth, beet can be used as an indicator species of tembotrione presence in the soil solution. The sorption of this herbicide was higher in the Histosol and it is directly related to the organic matter content. RESUMO: Estudos sobre o comportamento de herbicidas no solo podem ser realizados utilizando métodos biológicos e químicos. A condição para o método biológico ser eficiente depende da sensibilidade da espécie indicadora às baixas concentrações do herbicida na solução do solo. Entre os herbicidas comumente usados no Brasil para a cultura do milho, destaca-se o tembotrione; nas últimas safras, tem-se relatado intoxicação de algumas culturas quando cultivadas em sucessão a esta cultura. Esse fato pode ser atribuído a recomendações do tembotrione sem o conhecimento de suas interações com os coloides dos solos tropicais. Nesta pesquisa, selecionou-se uma espécie vegetal indicadora de resíduos do tembotrione no solo, após a triagem de 12 espécies. Estimou-se em seguida a sorção desse herbicida em Latossolo Amarelo, Organossolo e Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo com diferentes atributos. Inicialmente, após a triagem das 12 espécies vegetais, selecionaram-se as duas mais eficientes em detectar o tembotrione no solo. Na segunda etapa, foi selecionada a espécie mais sensível. Na terceira, foi avaliada a sorção do tembotrione nos três solos utilizando a espécie selecionada. Das 12 espécies avaliadas, Beta vulgaris e Brassica oleracea var. capitata foram as mais eficientes em detectar o tembotrione em baixas concentrações no solo, sendo B. vulgaris (beterraba) a mais sensível. Conclui-se que a beterraba, pela sua facilidade de cultivo, alta sensibilidade e rápido crescimento inicial, pode ser usada como espécie indicadora da presença do tembotrione na solução do solo. A sorção desse herbicida foi maior no Organossolo e está diretamente relacionada ao teor de matéria orgânica.

The cultivation of transgenic soybean plants using the glyphosate resistant gene (RR soybeans), takes up about 47% of the world’s cropping area. Despite the large area planted with soybeans resistant to glyphosate, there are very few studies of the environmental impact of this technology, especially in tropical areas. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of the cultive of RR soybeans and the use of glyphosate on the community of soil surface arthropods. The experiment was conducted in Coimbra, Minas Gerais state for two agricultural years. The experimental design was conducted in randomized blocks with five replications. The treatments were: non-transgenic soybean with mechanical weeding; RR soybean with mechanical weeding; RR soybean with one application of glyphosate and RR soybean with three applications of glyphosate. The populations of the soil surface arthropods were sampled over two years of cultivation (2007/2008 and 2008/2009). The cultive of RR soybean did not affect the richness and abundance of arthropods. A lower number of predators and detritivorous arthropods were observed in the treatments with one or three applications of glyphosate. Lower densities of arthropods were observed on the cultive of transgenic soybeans with three applications of glyphosate compared to the other treatments, especially the predators Achaearaneasp. (Araneae: Theridiidae), Oxypodinisp. (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae), Solenopsisspp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), the detritivorous Entomobryidae (Collembola), Hypogastrurasp. (Collembola: Hypogastruridae) and Xyleborussp. (Coleoptera: Scolytidae). The results indicate that the insertion of the glyphosate resistant gene does not affect the richness and abundance of the arthropods, however the use of glyphosate reduce the densities of predators and detritivorous on the soil surface. RESUMO: O cultivo de plantas transgênicas de soja com genes de resistência ao glyphosate (soja RR) ocupa cerca de 47% da área mundial com essa cultura. Apesar da grande área cultivada com soja resistente ao glyphosate, são escassos os estudos sobre o impacto ambiental dessa tecnologia, principalmente em áreas tropicais. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o impacto da soja RR e do glyphosate sobre a comunidade de artrópodes da superfície do solo. O experimento foi realizado no município de Coimbra, Estado de Minas Gerais, durante dois anos agrícolas. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados com cinco repetições. Os tratamentos estudados foram: soja não transgênica com capina mecânica das plantas daninhas; soja RR com capina mecânica das plantas daninhas; soja RR com uma aplicação de glyphosate; e soja RR com três aplicações de glyphosate. As populações de artrópodes da superfície do solo foram amostradas em dois cultivos: o primeiro no biênio 2007/2008 e o segundo no biênio 2008/2009. A soja transgênica RR não afetou a riqueza e a abundância dos artrópodes. Menores riquezas de artrópodes predadores e detritívoros foram observadas nos tratamentos que receberam uma ou três aplicações de glyphosate. Foram observadas menores densidades de artrópodes na soja transgênica com três aplicações de glyphosate do que nos demais tratamentos, sobretudo dos predadores Achaearaneasp. (Araneae: Theridiidae), Oxypodinisp. (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) e Solenopsissp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) e dos detritívoros Entomobryidae (Collembola), Hypogastrurasp. (Collembola: Hypogastruridae) e Xyleborussp. (Coleoptera: Scolytidae). Os resultados indicam que a inserção do gene de resistência ao glyphosate não afeta a riqueza e abundância dos artrópodes e que o uso de três aplicações do herbicida reduz as densidades de predadores e detritívoros da superfície do solo.

O tebuthiuron é um dos herbicidas mais utilizados na cultura da cana-de-açúcar e tem como característica a longa persistência no solo. Quando utilizado sem o conhecimento de suas interações com os atributos dos solos, pode reduzir a sustentabilidade dos sistemas de cultivos e contaminar águas superficiais e subterrâneas. Nesta pesquisa, utilizando a Cromatografia Líquida de Alta Eficiência, foram avaliados os efeitos da adição de matéria orgânica em um Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo sobre a sorção e dessorção do tebuthiuron. Conclui-se que existe relação direta entre a sorção do tebuthiuron e os teores de matéria orgânica no Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo e relação inversa para a dessorção. O índice de histerese foi menor nas amostras com alto conteúdo de matéria orgânica. Tebuthiuron is one of the most widely used herbicides in the sugarcane culture and its characteristic is the long persistence in soil. When used without knowing its interactions with soil attributes, it can reduce the sustainability of cropping systems and contaminate surface and groundwaters. In this research, by using a high-performance liquid chromatography, the effects of adding organic matter in a Red-Yellow Latosol were evaluated, as for the sorption and desorption of tebuthiuron. It was concluded that there is a direct relation between the sorption of tebuthiuron and the organic matter content in Red-Yellow Latosols and there is an inverse relation for desorption. The hysteresis index was lower in samples with high organic matter content.

In many plant species, tolerance to toxic metals is highly dependent on glutathione, an essential metabolite for cellular detoxifi cation. We evaluated the responses of glutathione metabolism to arsenite (As III ) in Salvinia molesta , an aquatic fern that has unexplored phytoremediation potential. Plants were exposed to diff erent As III concentrations in nutrient solution for 24 h. As III caused cell membrane damage to submerged leaves, indicating oxidative stress. Th ere was an increase in the glutathione content and ϒ-glutamylcysteine synthetase enzyme activity in the submerged and fl oating leaves. Th e glutathione peroxidase and glutathione sulfotransferase enzymes also showed increased activity in both plant parts, whereas glutathione reductase only showed increased activity in the submerged leaves. Th ese fi ndings suggest an important role for glutathione in the protection of S. molesta against the toxic eff ects of As III , with more eff ective tolerance responses in the fl oating leaves.

Weed control is one of the most relevant costs of sugarcane production. If weeds are not controlled at the right time, the productivity and longevity of sugarcane plantations are reduced. In this crop, chemical control is the most used method, since it is efficient and it has a lower cost. Differentiated tolerance of sugarcane cultivars to the herbicide clomazone has been observed in the fields. However, there is no scientific evidence of this effect on the productivity of crops. This study evaluated the effects of clomazone on three sugarcane cultivars (RB966928, RB93579 and RB867515). Herbicide application was performed 40 days after the emergence of sugarcane plants and 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after the application, the toxicity caused by the herbicide in the culture was evaluated through grades ranging from 0 (no toxicity) to 100 (plant death). The harvest was performed 580 days after the herbicide application. On this occasion, the length and diameter of the stem, number of tillers, tons of stems per hectare, total soluble solids of the juice, sucrose of the juice, apparent purity of the juice, sugarcane fiber, reducing sugars and total recoverable sugars were evaluated. The differential tolerance among sugarcane cultivars in response to clomazone application in the early stages of crop development was confirmed. Nevertheless, in all cultivars, the symptoms of intoxication disappeared over time and did not reflect on crop productivity. It was concluded that plant control in the sugarcane crop with clomazone, following the recommendation of the manufacturer, does not interfere negatively in the growth, development and productivity of the crop. RESUMO As plantas daninhas, se não controladas no momento adequado, reduzem a produtividade e longevidade dos canaviais. Nesta cultura, o método químico de controle das plantas daninhas, por ser eficiente e de menor custo, é o mais utilizado. No campo, tem-se observado tolerância diferenciada de cultivares de cana-de-açúcar ao herbicida clomazone. Contudo, não existe comprovação científica desse efeito sobre a produtividade dos cultivares. Neste trabalho foram avaliados os efeitos do clomazone em três cultivares de cana-de-açúcar (RB966928, RB93579 e RB867515). A aplicação do herbicida foi feita aos 40 dias após emergência das plantas de cana, e aos 7, 14, 21 e 28 dias após a aplicação foram avaliadas as intoxicações causadas pelo herbicida na cultura, atribuindo-se notas que variaram de 0 (ausência de intoxicação) até 100 (morte das plantas). Aos 580 dias após a aplicação foi realizada a colheita da cultura. Nessa ocasião, foram avaliados o comprimento e diâmetro do colmo, número de perfilho, tonelada de colmos por hectare, sólidos solúveis totais do caldo, sacarose do caldo, pureza aparente do caldo, fibra da cana, açúcares redutores e açúcares totais recuperáveis. Foi confirmada a tolerância diferenciada entre cultivares de cana-de-açúcar à aplicação do clomazone no início de desenvolvimento da cultura. Entretanto, os sintomas de intoxicação desapareceram ao longo do tempo e não refletiram na produtividade da cultura. Concluiu-se que o controle de plantas na cultura da cana-de-açúcar com o clomazone, seguindo a recomendação do fabricante, não interfere no crescimento, no desenvolvimento e na produtividade da cultura.

The chemical control of weed is a necessary practice in large-scale agriculture. However, when herbicides are used in the wrong way, they can remain into soil for long periods and/or be leached in its profile, and they may even contaminate groundwater. In this research, clomazone leaching in soil samples collected from different Brazilian regions was estimated by biological method. To do so, columns containing soils were used, and samples were collected every 5 cm. After preparing columns and applying a 1,500 g a.i. ha-1 clomazone dose, rain simulation was performed. Sorghum was used in order to detect the herbicide. More than 60% similarity was found for the studied variables; it was chosen to use only data referring to toxicity percentage. Clomazone did not cause reduction in sorghum cultivated in Organosol, thus indicating a strong herbicide sorption in this soil. Increased pH in Oxisol reduced leaching. More rainfall caused increased herbicide leaching in Oxisol (pH 5.1) and Quartzarenic Neosol. The highest leaching occurred in soils with lower pH and lower organic matter content. It is possible to conclude that, in soils with higher organic matter content, clomazone has lower risks of being leached. RESUMO O controle químico das plantas daninhas é prática consolidada na agricultura em larga escala. No entanto, quando os herbicidas são utilizados da forma incorreta, eles podem permanecer no solo por longos períodos e/ou serem lixiviados no seu perfil, podendo contaminar águas subterrâneas. Nesta pesquisa foi estimada, por método biológico, a lixiviação do clomazone em amostras de solos, coletados em diferentes regiões do Brasil. Para isso, foram usadas colunas contendo os solos, seccionadas de 5 em 5 cm. Após o preparo das colunas e aplicação do clomazone na dose de 1.500 g i.a. ha-1, foi feita a simulação das chuvas (60 e 90 mm). O sorgo foi utilizado para detecção do herbicida. Similaridade superior a 60% foi constatada nas variáveis em estudo, optando-se por utilizar apenas os dados referentes à porcentagem de intoxicação. O clomazone não causou intoxicação ao sorgo cultivado no Organossolo indicando forte sorção do herbicida nesse solo. O aumento do pH do Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo reduziu a lixiviação. Maior precipitação causou aumento da lixiviação do herbicida no Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo (pH 5,1) e no Neossolo Quartzarênico. A maior lixiviação ocorreu em solos com menor pH e menor teor de matéria orgânica. Conclui-se que, em solos com maiores teores de matéria orgânica, o clomazone tem menor risco de ser lixiviado.

Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o potencial de sorção do sulfentrazone em cinco diferentes tipos de solo, por meio da técnica do bioensaio. O comportamento do herbicida foi estudado nos seguintes tipos de solo: Planossolo Háplico, Argissolo Vermelho, Cambissolo Húmico, Neossolo Regolítico e Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo, além de um controle, apenas com areia lavada. O experimento foi realizado no delineamento inteiramente casualizado, e os tratamentos foram constituídos de sete doses crescentes do sulfentrazone em cada um dos tipos de solo. Aos 21 dias após emergência, realizou-se a colheita da planta indicadora e foi determinada a massa da matéria seca, bem como a dose do herbicida capaz de reduzir em 50% o acúmulo de massa da matéria seca das plantas indicadoras (C50). Com esses dados calculou-se a relação de sorção (RS) do sulfentrazone, por meio da comparação da relação dos resultados da C50 de cada solo com a C50 obtida na areia lavada. Os valores de RSdiferiram para os diferentes solos, apresentando a seguinte ordem crescente: Planossolo Háplico < Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo < Argissolo Vermelho < Cambissolo Húmico < Neossolo Regolítico; os solos com maiores teores de matéria orgânica apresentaram os maiores RS e pH de cada solo. Conclui-se que a sorção do sulfentrazone é influenciada pelo teor de matéria orgânica e pH dos solos. The objective of this study was to evaluate the sorption potential of sulfentrazone in five different soil types by bioassays. Herbicide behavior was studied in the following soil types: Haplic Planosol, Red Acrisol, Humic Cambisol, Eutrophic Entisol and Red-Yellow Latosol, in addition to a control treatment, with washed sand only. The experiment was completely randomized, and treatments consisted of seven increasing doses of sulfentrazone in each of the soil types. Twenty-one days after emergence, the indicator plant was collected and dry matter mass and herbicide dose capable of reducing the dry matter mass accumulation of the indicator plants by 50% (C50-) were determined. Based on these data, sorption rate (SR) of sulfentrazone was calculated by comparing the results of C50 of each soil with the C50 obtained in washed sand. Sorption rate values differed between the soils in the following ascending order: Haplic Planosol < Red-Yellow Latosol < Red Acrisol < Humic Cambisol < Eutrophic Entisol; the soils with higher organic matter content showed the highest SR and pH. It was concluded that sulfentrazone sorption is affected by soil organic matter content and pH.

O levantamento fitossociológico é o primeiro passo para implantação do manejo integrado das plantas daninhas em culturas. Neste trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar a ocorrência de plantas daninhas em plantios de mandioca na savana de Roraima. As coletas das plantas foram realizadas aleatoriamente 80 vezes em 10 lavouras, em quatro épocas (janeiro, fevereiro, março e abril de 2012). As plantas coletadas foram cortadas ao nível do solo e, depois disso, separadas por espécie, identificadas, quantificadas e pesadas em balança de precisão de 0,01 g. Em seguida foi feita a análise descritiva dos parâmetros fitossociológicos (frequência, densidade, abundância, número total de indivíduos por espécie, frequência relativa, densidade relativa, abundância relativa e índice de valor de importância) para as espécies coletadas. Além destes parâmetros, foram descritas as classes botânicas, famílias, espécies, tipo de propagação, ciclo de vida, hábito de crescimento, número total de espécies e massa seca por hectare. A composição da comunidade da área levantada foi considerada heterogênea, apresentando 27 espécies. As espécies que apresentaram a maior densidade por hectare foram: Digitaria sanguinalis (210.500), Brachiaria brizantha (111.000), Brachiaria decumbens (86.500) e Brachiaria humidicola (69.000). Digitaria sanguinalis obteve maiores densidade relativa (28,08), abundância relativa (26,16) e índice de valor de importância (65,34). A maioria das plantas daninhas apresentou hábito de crescimento herbáceo. A phyto-sociological survey is the first step to implement integrated weed management in crops. In this study, weed occurrence was evaluated in cassava plantations in the savannah of Roraima in northern Brazil. Harvest was performed randomly 80 times in 10 crops over four seasons (January, February, March, and April 2012). The harvested plants were cut at ground level, sorted out per species, identified, quantified, and weighed on a 0.01 g precision scale. A descriptive analysis was conducted of the phyto-sociological parameters (frequency, density, abundance, total number of individuals per species, relative frequency, relative density, relative abundance and importance value index) for the collected species. A description was also made of the botanical classes, families, species, type of propagation, life cycle, growth habit, total number of species and dry weight ha-1. The community in the surveyed area was considered to have a heterogeneous composition, comprising 27 species. The species presenting the highest density per hectare were Digitaria sanguinalis (210,500), Brachiaria brizantha (111,000), Brachiaria decumbens (86,500) and Brachiaria humidicola (69,000). Digitaria sanguinalis had the highest relative density (28.08), relative abundance (26.16) and importance value index (65,34). Most weeds had herbaceous growth habit.

Nitric oxide (NO) is an important molecule involved in the perception of stress induced by toxic compounds such as arsenic (As). The present study investigated the role of NO applied as sodium nitroprusside (SNP) in cell signalling and the ability of NO to attenuate the toxic effects of As (in the form of sodium arsenate) in water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes). Water hyacinth plants were collected and assigned to one of the following treatments: control; 100 μM SNP; 20 μM As; or 20 μM As + 100 μM SNP. The plants remained under these conditions for 0, 4, 12, and 24 h. After each time interval, the plants were collected and As absorption, production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), integrity of membranes, and antioxidant enzyme activities were evaluated. The plants were able to absorb and accumulate large amounts of As, even after only four hours of exposure to the pollutant. The absorption and bioaccumulation factor of As was even greater when plants were exposed to both As and SNP. The accumulation of As triggered increases in ROS production and cell membrane damage. In the presence of SNP, the tolerance index to As increased and damage was mitigated. Therefore, from the present work, it was possible to conclude that exogenous NO influenced the ability of plants to tolerate As; this finding has implications for phytoremediation in areas contaminated by As.

O manejo das plantas daninhas nos canaviais deve ser realizado de forma racional, levando em consideração a habilidade competitiva dos cultivares e das plantas daninhas, podendo ser reduzido o custo de controle e o uso de herbicidas. Neste trabalho foi avaliada a interferência de populações de Brachiaria brizantha em cultivares de cana-de-açúcar, tendo como objetivo estimar o nível de dano econômico da espécie daninha em competição com os cultivares RB72454, RB867515 e SP801816. Para isso, foi conduzido um experimento em campo, onde os cultivares conviveram com diferentes densidades populacionais da espécie daninha. Considerando valores médios das variáveis utilizadas no cálculo, o nível de dano econômico foi atingido com a população de 0,33, 0,46 e 0,66 planta m-2 de B. brizantha para os cultivares RB867515, RB72454 e SP801816, respectivamente. Weed management in sugarcane fields must be performed rationally, taking into consideration the competitive ability of cultivars and weeds, to allow for reductions in control costs and herbicide use. In this study, an evaluation was made of the interference of populations of Brachiaria brizantha in sugarcane cultivars, with the objective of estimating the economic threshold level of B. brizantha in competition with the cultivars RB72454, RB867515 and SP801816. For this purpose, an experiment was conducted under field conditions, where the cultivars coexisted with different weed densities. Considering the average values of the variables used for calculations, an economic threshold level was achieved with a population of 0.33, 0.46 and 0.66 plants m-2 of B. brizantha for cultivars RB867515, RB72454 and SP801816, respectively.

Inadequate herbicide application can result in failures in weed control and/or poisoning of the crops, resulting in yield losses. In this research were assessed the effects of the sprayer nozzle boom height in the distribution of the spray solution for weed control, influencing intoxication of beans and crop yield. Experiments were conducted in laboratory and field conditions. In laboratory, the performance of flat spray tip TT 11002 was assessed at heights 0.20, 0.30, 0.40 and 0.50 meters with respect to the target surface. In the field the same heights were assessed in applications of herbicides fomesafen, fluazifop-P-butyl and fomesafen + fluazifop-P-butyl. There was an inverse relationship between the height of the spray boom and the coefficients of variation of the patterns. The mixture better efficiency in a tank of fluazifop-P-butyl + fomesafen was obtained with the height of 0.50 m from the target. This treatment resulted in better weed control, lower poisoning of the bean plants and better crop yield rates. RESUMOAplicações de herbicidas de forma inadequada podem resultar em falhas no controle das plantas daninhas e/ou intoxicação da cultura, ocasionando em perda de produtividade. Nesta pesquisa foram avaliados os efeitos da altura da barra porta-bicos na distribuição da calda para o controle de plantas daninhas, influenciando a intoxicação do feijoeiro e a produtividade da cultura. Foram realizados experimentos em condições de laboratório e de campo. Em laboratório, avaliou-se o desempenho das pontas de pulverização TT 11002 de jato plano nas alturas de 0,20, 0,30, 0,40 e 0,50 m, em relação à superfície do alvo. No campo, as mesmas alturas foram avaliadas nas aplicações dos herbicidas fomesafen, fluazifop-p-butil e fomesafen + fluazifop-p-butil. Observou-se relação inversa entre a altura da barra e o coeficiente de variação dos perfis. Melhor eficiência da mistura em tanque de fluazifop-p-butil + fomesafen foi obtida com altura de 0,50 m do alvo. Este tratamento resultou em melhor controle das plantas daninhas, menor intoxicação do feijoeiro e melhores índices produtivos da cultura.

Growth regulators can be used to further retard or inhibit vegetative growth. In this sense, the objective of this study was to determine the effects of age and number of trinexapac-ethyl applications on the growth and yield of sugarcane. The experiment was in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The treatments were in a 3 x 2 + 2 factorial arrangement, where factor A corresponded to the application times of the plant growth regulator (120, 200 and 240 days after bud burst (DAB) of sugarcane) and factor B to the number of applications (one or two applications). In addition, two controls (one with three applications and another application without the regulator) were added. The application of trinexapac-ethyl decreased the number and the distance between buds, height, root volume and sugarcane yield. The sequential application (2 or 3 times) induced an increase in stem diameter and three applications of the product increased the number of plant tillers. The use of growth regulators applied at 240 DAB has reduced plant height, however without changing the number of buds. It can be concluded that trinexapac-ethyl changes sugarcane growth and yield, regardless of season and number of applications. RESUMO - Os reguladores vegetais podem ser utilizados para promover, retardar ou inibir o crescimento vegetativo. Neste sentido, o objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar os efeitos de épocas e número de aplicações do trinexapac-ethyl sobre o crescimento e a produtividade da cana-de-açúcar. O experimento foi delineado em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram arranjados em esquema fatorial (3 x 2 + 2); o fator A correspondeu às épocas de aplicação do regulador vegetal (120, 200 e 240 dias após a brotação das gemas (DAB) da cana-de-açúcar), e o fator B, ao número de aplicações (uma ou duas). Além disso, foram adicionadas duas testemunhas (uma com três aplicações e outra sem aplicação do regulador). A aplicação do trinexapac-ethyl reduziu o número e a distância entre gemas, a altura, o volume radicular e a produtividade da cana-de-açúcar. A aplicação sequencial (duas ou três vezes) promoveu incremento no diâmetro do caule, e três aplicações do produto aumentaram o número de perfilhos das plantas. O uso do regulador vegetal aplicado aos 240 DAB reduziu a altura das plantas, porém sem alterar o número de gemas. Conclui-se que o trinexapac-ethyl altera o crescimento e a produção da cana-de-açúcar, independentemente da época e do número de aplicações.

O sucesso do consórcio entre espécies cultivadas depende da adoção de práticas que proporcionem, em momento oportuno, maior habilidade competitiva a uma espécie em detrimento da outra. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o uso do glyphosate no manejo da braquiária em consórcio com o milho. O experimento foi realizado em delineamento de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram arranjados em esquema fatorial 5 x 2 + 2, sendo o primeiro fator correspondente às doses do herbicida glyphosate (48, 96, 144, 240, 480 g ha^-1 do equivalente ácido (e.a.)), e o segundo, aos estádios vegetativos da braquiária no momento da aplicação (dois e quatro perfilhos). Foram adicionadas duas testemunhas, constituídas pela testemunha capinada e pela testemunha sem aplicação do herbicida. O número de plantas e o de perfilhos, bem como a matéria seca da braquiária, foram reduzidos com a aplicação do glyphosate. O aumento das doses de glyphosate causou maior intoxicação da forrageira, que foi mais sensível ao herbicida no estádio vegetativo de dois perfilhos. A matéria seca do milho foi maior nas maiores doses do glyphosate. Todavia, a altura das plantas não foi afetada. O peso de mil grãos e a produtividade de grãos do milho aumentaram com o incremento da dose do glyphosate. A ausência de aplicação influenciou negativamente a colheita do milho. Conclui-se que as dose de 96 e 144 g ha^-1 e.a., quando aplicadas no estádio de dois e quatro perfilhos, respectivamente, reduz o crescimento da braquiária e não afeta a produtividade de grãos do milho. The success of the intercropping among cultivated species depends on the adoption of practices that provide, in due course, greater competitive ability of a species over another. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of glyphosate herbicide in the suppression of Brachiaria (signalgrass) intercropped with maize. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The treatments were arranged in a 5 x 2 + 2 factorial arrangement, the first factor corresponding to the doses of glyphosate (48, 96, 144, 240, 480 g ha^-1 of the acid equivalent (a.e)) and the second one to the vegetative stages of the signalgrass at the time of application (2 and 4 tillers). Two controls were added to the treatment list, comprising controls without herbicide application and hand removal of the signalgrass. The number of plants, tillers and dry matter of signalgrass was reduced with glyphosate. The increase of the glyphosate doses enhanced the injure to the forage plants, mainly when the compound was sprayed at the two-tiller vegetative stage. The dry matter of maize plants increased proportionally to the glyphosate dose. However, the height of the maize plants was not affected. The grain mass and productivity of maize grain increased with increasing dose of glyphosate. The maize yield was negatively influenced on the untreated control. Glyphosate at 96 and 144 g ha^-1, when applied at 2 and 4 tiller stage, respectively, reduces the growth of signalgrass and does not affect the maize grain yield.

Competition between maize and signalgrass can economically cripple the intercropping by the reduced yield of maize and dry matter content of the forage. In seeking to define plant arrangements which make this system more efficient, this research was held with the objective of assessing the effects of interference of densities of signalgrass (Urochloa Brizantha) on nutrition and on maize grain yield. Two field experiments were conducted in a randomized block design with four replications. Treatments were arranged similarly in both experiments, in a 2 x 4 factorial design, the first factor being the dose of Nicosulfuron herbicide applied (0 and 8 g ha-1) and the second factor being the forage seeding rates (0, 2, 4 and 6 kg of seeds per hectare). The interference of signalgrass reduced foliar nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus content in maize plants intercropped with the forage. Higher values of grain yield were observed with the reduction of the spacing and the application of the recommended herbicide underdose (8 g ha-1). It was concluded that, regardless of the seeding density of U. Brizantha, reducing the maize seeding inter-rows spacing, combined with the application of an underdose of Nicosulfuron, caused a positive effect by reducing the initial forage growth, resulting in less interference of Urochloa brizantha on nutrient uptake by the maize plants and grain yield of the crop. A competição entre o milho e a braquiaria pode inviabilizar economicamente o consórcio devido à redução na produção de grãos do milho e de matéria seca da forrageira. Na busca por definir arranjos de plantas que permitam tornar esse sistema mais eficiente, realizou-se esta pesquisa com o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos da interferência de densidades de braquiária (Urochloa brizantha) na nutrição e produção de grãos do milho. Foram realizados dois experimentos de campo, no delineamento de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram arranjados de modo semelhante nos dois experimentos, em esquema fatorial 2 x 4, sendo o primeiro fator a dose aplicada do herbicida Nicosulfuron (0 e 8 g ha-1)e o segundo as densidades de semeadura da forrageira (0, 2, 4 e 6 kg de sementes por hectare). A interferência da braquiária reduziu os teores foliares de nitrogênio, potássio e fósforo nas plantas de milho consorciadas com a forrageira. Maiores valores de produção de grãos foram verificados com a redução do espaçamento e a aplicação da subdose recomendada do herbicida (8 g ha-1). Concluiu-se que, independentemente da densidade de semeadura de Urochloa brizantha, a redução do espaçamento entre linhas do milho, aliada à aplicação da subdose do Nicosulfuron, causou efeito positivo por reduzir o crescimento inicial da forrageira, resultando em menor interferência de Urochloa brizantha no acúmulo de nutrientes pelas plantas de milho e na produtividade de grãos da cultura.

Soil is a very heterogeneous environment that allows the establishment of wide range of microorganisms populations, whose balance is affected by biotic and abiotic factors. This study has aimed to assess the effect of doses of mesotrione and fluazifop-p-butyl herbicides and two assessment periods on microbial activity and biomass of soil cultivated with cassava Cacau-UFV cultivar, besides the root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Two trials were conducted in a protected environment where was realized post-emergence application of mesotrione in the doses of 72, 108, 144 and 216 g ha-1 and fluazifop-p-butyl in the doses of 100, 150, 200 and 300 g ha-1, besides a control without application. Soil samples were collected for determination of soil respiratory rate (RR), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), metabolic quotient (qCO2), and colonization of roots by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi at the 30 and 60 days after applications (DAA) of the herbicides. Fluazifop-p-butyl increased the RR, MBC and the percentage of cassava roots colonized by mycorrhizal fungi in the assessment performed at 60 DAA. The larger effects of mesotrione on soil microbial indicators were up to 30 DAA, being the changes minimized at 60 DAA. It is concluded that the herbicides alter the soil microbial indicators, with effects dependent of the product, of dose applied and also of the period of assessment. O solo é um ambiente bastante heterogêneo que permite o estabelecimento de diversas populações de microrganismos, cujo equilíbrio é afetado por fatores bióticos e abióticos. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito de doses dos herbicidas mesotrione e fluazifop-p-butil e duas épocas de avaliação na atividade e biomassa microbiana do solo cultivado com o cultivar de mandioca Cacau-UFV, bem como a colonização das raízes por fungos micorrízicos arbusculares. Dois ensaios foram realizados em ambiente protegido, constituindo-se da aplicação em pós-emergência do mesotrione nas doses de 72, 108, 144 e 216 g ha-1 e do fluazifop-p-butil nas doses de 100, 150, 200 e 300 g ha-1, além de uma testemunha sem aplicação. Aos 30 e 60 dias após a aplicação (DAA) dos herbicidas, amostras de solo foram coletadas para determinação da taxa respiratória do solo (TR), do carbono da biomassa microbiana (CBM) e do quociente metabólico (qCO2), sendo também avaliada a colonização das raízes por fungos micorrízicos arbusculares. O fluazifop-p-butil aumentou a TR, o CBM e a porcentagem de raízes de mandioca colonizada por fungos micorrízicos na avaliação realizada aos 60 DAA. Já os maiores efeitos do mesotrione sobre os indicadores microbiológicos do solo foram até os 30 DAA, e aos 60 DAA as alterações foram minimizadas. Conclui-se que os herbicidas alteram os indicadores microbianos do solo, sendo os efeitos dependentes do produto, da dose aplicada e também da época de avaliação.

Neste trabalho é apresentado um estudo da anatomia das folhas de espécies de plantas daninhas de grande ocorrência no Brasil: Amaranthus deflexus, Amaranthus spinosus, Alternanthera tenella e Euphorbia heterophylla, visando melhor compreensão das barreiras que cada espécie impõe à penetração dos herbicidas e outros compostos utilizados em aplicações foliares. As folhas completamente expandidas do terceiro ao quinto nó foram coletadas de plantas de ocorrência espontânea no campo. Das folhas de cada espécie foram obtidas três amostras da região mediana, com aproximadamente 1 cm2, as quais foram utilizadas em estudos da estrutura, clarificação e em observações em microscópio eletrônico de varredura. Todas as espécies avaliadas são anfiestomáticas. As principais barreiras foliares potenciais à penetração de herbicidas observadas nas plantas daninhas A. deflexus e A. spinosus foram, respectivamente, grande espessura da cutícula da face adaxial e da cutícula das duas faces. Já em relação a A. tenella, grande espessura da cutícula das duas faces, elevado teor de cera epicuticular e alta densidade tricomática foram os principais obstáculos potenciais detectados. E. heterophylla apresentou como possíveis principais barreiras foliares à penetração de agroquímicos o alto teor de cera epicuticular, a elevada densidade de laticíferos e a grande espessura da cutícula da face adaxial. This research aimed to study the leaf anatomy of the weed species Amaranthus deflexus, Amaranthus spinosus, Alternanthera tenella and Euphorbia heterophylla, widely known in Brazil, to acquire a better understanding of the barriers each species imposes to herbicide penetration, and to other substances used for leaf spraying. Completely expanded leaves from the third to the fifth nodes were collected from spontaneous plants in the field. Three samples approximately 1cm2, were removed from the medium portion of the leaves, from each species. These samples were used for structure, clarification and scanning-electron microscope observations. All species were amphistomatic. The potential major leaf barriers to herbicide penetration in A. deflexus and A. spinosus were, respectively, high cuticle thickness in the adaxial side and high cuticle thickness in both sides, respectively, whereas in A. tenella, high cuticle thickness on both sides, high content of epicuticular wax and high trichome density were the major potential barriers observed. E. heterophylla showed high content of the epicuticular wax, high latex glandular density and high cuticle thickness in the adaxial side as possible major barriers to herbicide penetration.

A fim de prever o potencial de lixiviação e degradação de um herbicida, bem como a eficiência no controle das plantas daninhas, é essencial conhecer os processos de retenção dessa molécula no solo. Neste trabalho, avaliou-se a lixiviação do fomesafen em quatro solos: Cambissolo, Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo com pH corrigido e original, Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo e Organossolo. Para isso, foram utilizados bioensaios, empregando-se o híbrido de sorgo BRS655 como planta indicadora da presença do fomesafen. Os solos foram acondicionados em colunas de PVC de 10 cm de diâmetro por 50 cm de comprimento, marcadas e seccionadas a cada 5 cm de distância. Aplicou-se o herbicida fomesafen no topo das colunas, na dose de 500 g ha-1 do fomesafen. Após 12 horas procedeu-se à simulação de chuva, com aplicação de uma lâmina de água de 80 mm. Realizaram-se avaliações de intoxicação das plantas e colheita da parte aérea, para determinação da matéria seca aos 21 dias após a semeadura do sorgo em cada coluna. A ordem decrescente de lixiviação foi: Cambissolo > Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo, pH corrigido > Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo, pH original > Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo > Organossolo. Os fatores que mais afetaram a lixiviação, em ordem decrescente de importância, foram o teor de matéria orgânica, a textura e o pH do solo. To obtain an estimate of a herbicide's potential for leaching and degradation, as well as its weed control efficiency, it is essential to understand its retention processes in the soil. This work evaluated fomesafen leaching in four soils: Inceptisol, Latosol with original and corrected pH, Ultisol and Histosol. Thus, bioassays were carried out using the sorghum hybrid BRS655 as indicator of the presence of fomesafen in soils. The soils were packed in PVC columns of 10 cm diameter and 50 cm in length, marked and sectioned every 5 cm apart. Fomesafen was applied at the top of the columns, at a dose of 500 g ha-1 Rainfall was simulated 12 hours later, by applying a level of water of 80 mm. Plant poisoning evaluations and aerial part harvest were performed to determine shoot dry matter at 21 days after sowing sorghum in the soil of each column. The decreasing leaching order was: Inceptisol > Latosol, corrected pH > Latosol, original pH > Ultisol > Histosol. The factors that most affected leaching in a decreasing order of importance were: organic matter content, soil texture, and soil pH.

O estudo da dinâmica de um herbicida no solo averigua as suas interações com os componentes do meio tendo em vista a eficiência agronômica, o que garante a seletividade à cultura e a redução dos riscos de impacto ambiental. Neste trabalho avaliou-se o processo de sorção do fomesafen em solos brasileiros: Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo, Cambissolo e Organossolo. Além dos solos utilizou-se também como substrato a areia lavada como material inerte para determinação das razões de sorção do fomesafen nos solos estudados. Para isso, empregou-se o método de bioensaios, utilizando-se plantas de Sorghum vulgare como bioindicadoras da presença do herbicida. Aos 21 dias após a semeadura do sorgo, foram realizadas avaliações de intoxicação das plantas e colheita da parte aérea para determinação da matéria seca. No cálculo do C50 utilizou-se o modelo log-logístico não linear, obtendo-se a seguir as relações de sorção do herbicida nos diferentes solos. A ordem decrescente da relação de sorção do formesafen nos solos estudados foi: Organossolo > Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo > Cambissolo. Conclui-se que os teores de matéria orgânica e de argila dos solos foram os atributos que mais afetaram a sorção do fomesafen. The study of the dynamics of a herbicide in the soil focus on the interactions with environmental components to obtain agronomic efficiency, ensuring selectivity to the culture and risk reduction of environmental impact. This study evaluated the sorption process of fomesafen in the Brazilian soils Ultisol, Cambisol, and Organosol. Besides soil, washed sand was used as an inert material for determination of the sorption ratio of fomesafen in the soil. The bioassay method was applied, using Sorghum vulgare plants as bio-indicator of herbicide presence. Plant poisoning evaluation and harvest for dry matter determination were carried out 21 days after sorghum sowing. To calculate C50, the nonlinear log-logistic model was applied and sorption ratios of the herbicide were obtained in different soils. The decreasing sorption ratio of formesafen in the soils was: Organosol > Ultisol > Cambisol. It was concluded that the contents of organic matter and clay in the soils were the attributes that most influenced fomesafen sorption.

Devido à ausência na caracterização competitiva de espécies de plantas daninhas e suas habilidades sob condições edafoclimáticas desfavoráveis, avaliou-se o potencial de competição de Tridax procumbens em meio à cultura da soja. O cultivo foi realizado em condições controladas, em câmara de crescimento, utilizando-se o sistema de séries substitutivas, o qual abrangeu os monocultivos das espécies e a sua competição, com suprimento adequado de água e sob condições de deficiência hídrica temporária. Avaliaram-se a demanda evapotranspiratória, altura de planta, área foliar total e específica, razões de massa de matéria seca de raiz, caule e folha, taxas de assimilação e fotossíntese líquida e a atividade de nitrato redutase aos 20, 50 e 70 dias após o transplante, bem como os teores de macronutrientes das espécies. Observaram-se menores demanda evapotranspiratória, área e duração foliar, assim como taxa de assimilação líquida de carbono, para T. procumbens, com consequente aumento da área foliar específica e da razão de área foliar. Mesmo sob deficiência hídrica temporária, a soja apresentou maiores altura de planta, área foliar e massa de matéria seca total. A fotossíntese líquida da soja foi superior à da planta daninha, embora esta tenha superado a cultura no início do seu cultivo. A atividade de nitrato redutase também foi maior para a soja em relação à planta daninha. Pelas análises dos minerais, T. procumbens demonstrou alteração na partição destes, principalmente com concentração de K e Mg em folhas e caules, respectivamente. Por meio das comparações entre os tratamentos, concluiu-se que T. procumbens apresenta baixo potencial competitivo quando em cultivo com a soja, mesmo sob condições de deficiência hídrica temporária. Não foi possível distinguir completamente os efeitos da competição por água dos demais recursos do meio entre soja e T. procumbens, embora se verifique maior competição intraespecífica da cultura. Due to the existence of poor competitive characterization of weeds and of their competitive ability under unfavourable climate and soil conditions, the competition potential of Tridax procumbens and soybean was evaluated. The experiment was carried out under control conditions in a growth chamber, using a replacement series system including the monoculture and its competing weeds, under normal water conditions and temporary water deficiency. The assessments included evapotranspiration, height, leaf and specific leaf area, dry matter ratios of root, stem, and leaf, carbon net assimilation and photosynthesis rate, and nitrate reductase activity at 20, 50, and 70 days after the transplant, as well as macronutrient levels. Minor evapotranspiration, length, and leaf area, as well as carbon net assimilation rate of T. procumbens were observed, with increases in specific leaf area and leaf area ratio. Even under temporary water deficit, soybean showed higher height, leaf area, and total dry matter. The soybean's net assimilation rate was higher than that of the weed, although the latter surpassed the former at the beginning of the crop's growth. Nitrate reductase activity was also higher for the soybean. Mineral analysis showed changes in the weed's partition, mainly in K and Mg concentration in the leaves and stems, respectively. Based on the comparisons of the treatments, it was concluded that T. procumbens presents low competitive potential when grown with soybean, even under water deficit. It was not possible to distinguish the effect caused by competition for water from the other competitive effects between soybean and T. Procumbens, although a greater intra-specific competition by the crop was verified.

The resistance of weeds to herbicides is related to metabolic, enzymatic, physiological and anatomical changes. Coupled with these changes, plants can increase or decrease their physiological activities, which can affect their growth and development. Thus, resistant biotypes may have a higher ecological adaptation in these environments and become predominant due to the elimination of sensitive plants. Under natural selection conditions, biotypes with greater ecological adaptation show higher production than less adapted biotypes. Thus, the aim of this work was to assess the effect of competition on the physiological characteristics of Conyza bonariensis biotypes susceptible and resistant to the herbicide glyphosate. The treatments consisted of plants of two biotypes of C. bonariensis - one proven to be resistant and one susceptible to glyphosate. In the center of the experimental unit, three seeds of the C. bonariensis biotype considered for treatment - resistant (R) or susceptible (S) - were sown , with the plant being surrounded by 0 (no competition), 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 plants of the opposite biotype. The susceptible biotype presented a higher tolerance to competition with plants of the opposite biotype regarding the physiological characteristics evaluated. The resistant biotype of C. bonariensis has a physiological disadvantage compared to the susceptible one and, therefore, less potential for adaptability in the absence of the selection factor - the herbicide glyphosate.

Com o objetivo de identificar as comunidades de plantas daninhas que ocorreram após o cultivo de milho em plantio direto na savana amazônica, foi realizado um levantamento fitossociológico em um experimento de manejo do solo. As coletas de identificação e quantificação das plantas daninhas foram realizadas quatro meses após a colheita do milho, durante os meses de junho e julho de 2010. As plantas foram avaliadas quanto a: classe botânica, família, espécie, número de indivíduos, frequência, densidade, abundância, frequência relativa, densidade relativa, abundância relativa, índice de valor de importância, método de propagação e ciclo de vida. A vegetação emergente na área de estudo foi de 419 espécies, das quais nove foram identificadas como da classe botânica das dicotiledôneas e seis das monocotiledôneas. As espécies da família Ciperaceae foram as mais abundantes, enquanto as famílias Poaceae, Ciperaceae, Asteraceae, Malvaceae e Fabaceae foram as que registraram os maiores números de indivíduos e frequências de espécies nas parcelas. Foi encontrada apenas a espécie Cordia curassavica com hábito de crescimento arbustivo. A espécie Cyperus rotundus apresentou os maiores valores em todos os parâmetros fitossociológicos avaliados, destacando-se o índice de valor de importância, que foi 1,5 vez maior que o de Brachiaria humidicola, o qual foi o segundo maior valor (40,49). The aim of this work was to identify the occurrence of weeds after five years of no-tillage corn cultivation in the Amazonian savannah. A phytosociological survey was conducted involving collection, identification, and quantification of the weeds, after corn harvest during June and July, 2010. The investigated properties included botanical classes, families, species, number of individuals, frequency, density, abundance, relative frequency, relative density, relative abundance, importance value index, propagation method, and life cycle. The emergent vegetation in the study area had 419 species, nine of which were identified as Dicotyledons, while six were identified as Monocotyledons. Species in the Ciperaceae family were the most abundant, while the families Poaceae, Ciperaceae, Asteraceae, Malvaceae, and Fabaceae exhibited the highest number of individuals and species frequency per plot. Only the Cordia curassavica shrubby growth habit was identified. Cyperus rotundus species showed the highest values in all the phytosociological parameters evaluated, with an importance index value 1.5 times higher than that of Brachiaria humidicola which had the second highest value (40.49).

Objetivou-se neste estudo avaliar a translocação de glyphosate em plantas tolerantes (Ipomoea nil, Tridax procumbens e Spermacoce latifolia) e suscetível (Bidens pilosa) a esse herbicida. As avaliações de absorção e translocação do 14C-glyphosate em I. nil e B. pilosa foram efetuadas às 6, 12, 36 e 72 horas após a aplicação do herbicida (HAT), e em T. procumbens e S. latifolia, às 72 HAT. As plantas foram coletadas e fracionadas em: folha de aplicação, demais folhas, caules e raízes; em T. procumbens e S. latifolia, avaliou-se a presença do produto na inflorescência da planta. Em S. latifolia, aproximadamente 88% do glyphosate permaneceu na folha de aplicação, e pequena quantidade translocou para as raízes. Todavia, em T. procumbens, 75% do herbicida permaneceu na folha que recebeu a aplicação, observando-se maior translocação na inflorescência em relação às raízes. Conclui-se que a menor translocação do glyphosate observada em S. latifolia e T. procumbens pode ser um dos fatores responsáveis pela maior tolerância dessas espécies ao herbicida, ao passo que em I. nil a metabolização, a exsudação radicular ou a compartimentalização podem favorecer a tolerância, já que grande quantidade do produto atingiu as raízes da espécie. The objective of this study was to evaluate glyphosate translocation in glyphosate-tolerant weed species (I. nil, T. procumbens and S. latifolia) compared to glyphosate-susceptible species (B. pilosa). The evaluations of 14C-glyphosate absorption and translocation were performed at 6, 12, 36 and 72 hours after treatment (HAT) in I. nil and B. pilosa, and only at 72 HAT in the species T. procumbens and S. latifolia. The plants were collected and fractionated into application leaf, other leaves, stems, and roots. In S. latifolia, approximately 88% of the glyphosate remained in the application leaf and a small amount was translocated to roots at 72 HAT. However, 75% of the herbicide applied on T. procumbens remained in the leaf that had received the treatment, with greater glyphosate translocation to the floral bud. It was concluded that the smaller amount of glyphosate observed in S. latifolia and T. procumbens may partly account for their higher tolerance to glyphosate. However, I. nil tolerance to glyphosate may be associated with other factors such as metabolization, root exudation or compartmentalization, because a large amount of the herbicide reached the roots of this species.

El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar las características asociadas con la eficiencia fotosintética y del uso del agua en especies de malezas. Los tratamientos fueron compuestos por las especies Bidens pilosa, Commelina benghalensis y Brachiaria plantaginea, sembradas individualmente en las unidades experimentales. El diseño experimental fue en bloques al azar en una factorial 3 x 4 con tres repeticiones. Se evaluaron características asociadas con el uso del agua - tasa transpiratoria (E), conductancia estomática (Gs), presión de vapor en la cavidad subestomatal (Ean) y la eficiencia del uso del agua (EUA) - así como la fotosíntesis - concentración interna de CO2 en la hoja (Ci), CO2 consumido durante la evaluación (ΔC), temperatura media de las hojas en el momento de la evaluación (Tleaf) y la tasa fotosintética (A). B. plantaginea presentó menor E, menor EUA y más altos A y Ci, diferiendo de las otras especies. B. pilosa mostró valores más bajos de EUA, A y T en comparación con otras especies. Según los resultados, se puede concluir que la B. plantaginea fue más eficiente en las características relacionadas con la fotosíntesis, es decir, más eficiente en el aprovechamiento de la luz. B. pilosa fue más eficiente en las características relacionadas con el uso del agua. The objective of this study was to evaluate characteristics associated with the photosynthetic efficiency and water use of weed species. Treatments were composed by the species Bidens pilosa, Commelina benghalensis and Brachiaria plantaginea, sown individually in the experimental units. The experimental design was in randomized blocks in a 3 x 4 factorial, with three repetitions. Characteristics associated with water use - transpiratory rate (E), stomatal conductance (Gs), vapor pressure in the substomatal chamber (Ean) and water use efficiency (WUE) - as well as photosynthesis - internal leaf CO2 concentration (Ci), CO2 consumed during the evaluation (ΔC),leaves average temperature at evaluation time (Tleaf) and photosynthetic rate (A) - were evaluated. B. plantaginea showed lower E, lower WUE and higher A and Ci, differing from the other involved species. B. pilosa showed lower values of WUE, A and T when compared to the other species. According to the results, it can be concluded that B. plantaginea was more efficient in characteristics related to the photosynthesis, i.e., more efficient use of light. B. pilosa was more efficient in characteristics related to water use.

Objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar a composição química da cera epicuticular e caracterizar a superfície foliar dos cultivares de cana-de-açúcar RB855113 (sensível à mistura de herbicidas trifloxysulfuron-sodium + ametryn), SP80-1842 e SP80-1816, do clone RB957689 (com média sensibilidade à mistura de herbicidas) e do cultivar RB867515 (tolerante). A cera epicuticular foi extraída e quantificada e os seus constituintes analisados por cromatografia a gás, acoplada a espectrômetro de massa (CG-EM). Para determinação da composição química, assim como a caracterização da superfície foliar dos cultivares avaliados, amostras de lâmina foliar foram coletadas e submetidas à microscopia eletrônica de varredura, para caracterização das faces adaxial e abaxial. A análise das amostras revelou a presença de hidrocarbonetos, esteróides, ésteres graxos, álcoois e aldeídos. A cera do cultivar sensível à mistura (RB855113) apresentou menor número de componentes químicos e predominância de ésteres graxos de cadeia mais curta que os encontrados nos demais cultivares, bem como pequena proporção de esteróides e hidrocarbonetos. Nos cultivares com média sensibilidade (SP80-1842 e RB867515), a cera apresentou maior proporção de hidrocarbonetos e esteróides. A cera do cultivar RB855113 apresentou polaridade intermediária, porém menos polar que a cera do cultivar RB867515 (tolerante à mistura). Não foram observadas diferenças marcantes entre os cultivares no que se refere à micromorfologia foliar. This study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition of epicuticular wax and to characterize leaf surface in the sugarcane cultivars RB85113 (sensitive to trifloxysulfuron-sodium + ametryn), SP80 1842, SP80 1816, clone RB957689 (with medium sensitivity to trifloxysulfuron-sodium + ametryn) and the cultivar RB867515 (tolerant). Epicuticular wax was extracted and quantified, and its contents submitted to gas chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer. Samples of foliar slides were collected and submitted to electron scanning microscopy to characterize adaxial and abaxial sides, and to determine the chemical composition. This analysis showed the presence of hydrocarbon, steroids, fatty esters, alcohols and aldehyde. The cultivar RB85113 presented wax with lower chemical composition, predominance of fatty esters and low ratio of hydrocarbon. In SP80 1842 and RB867515, the wax presented higher hydrocarbon and steroid ratio. Wax polarity was intermediate in RB85113 but higher in RB867515. In relation to leaf micro-morphology, no relevant differences were found.

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi estudar a anatomia foliar das espécies de plantas daninhas Leonurus sibiricus (rubim), Leonotis nepetaefolia (cordão-de-frade), Plantago tomentosa (tanchagem) e Sida glaziovii (guanxuma-branca) e, assim, obter melhor entendimento das barreiras à penetração dos herbicidas e, conseqüentemente, fornecer subsídios à busca de estratégias de manejo para superar esses obstáculos. As folhas expandidas do terceiro ao quinto nó foram coletadas de plantas no campo; destas folhas foram obtidas três amostras da região central, com aproximadamente 1 cm², as quais foram utilizadas em estudos da estrutura e clarificação e em observações em microscópio eletrônico de varredura (MEV). L. sibiricus é uma espécie hipoestomática, e as demais espécies avaliadas são anfiestomáticas. As principais barreiras foliares potenciais à penetração de herbicidas constatadas em L. sibiricus foram a alta densidade tricomática e a ausência de estômatos na face adaxial. Já em relação a L. nepetaefolia, alta densidade tricomática, grande espessura da cutícula da face adaxial e baixa densidade estomática na face adaxial foram os principais obstáculos potenciais detectados. P. tomentosa apresentou como possíveis barreiras foliares à penetração de herbicidas o alto teor de cera epicuticular, a alta densidade tricomática e a grande espessura da cutícula de ambas as faces. Alta densidade tricomática e baixa densidade estomática na face adaxial foram os possíveis obstáculos constatados nas folhas de S. glaziovii. The objective of this research was to study the leaf anatomy of the weed species Leonurus sibiricus, Leonotis nepetaefolia, Plantago tomentosa and Sida glaziovii to acquire a better understanding of the barriers each species imposes upon herbicide penetration, thus supporting the search for strategies to overcome these obstacles. Completely expanded leaves from the third to the fifth nodes of the plants were collected in the field. Three samples of approximately 1 cm² were taken from the central portion of the leaves of each species to be used in the studies of structure and clarification as well as observations through a scanning-electron microscope (SEM). L. sibiricus is the only hypostomatic species, while the others are amphistomatic species. The main leaf barriers observed against herbicide penetration in L. sibiricus were high trichomic density and stomata absence in the adaxial side; in L. nepetaefolia, the barriers were high trichomic density, high cuticle thickness in the adaxial side and low stomatic density in the adaxial side, whereas in P. tomentosa the barriers were high content of epicuticular wax, high trichomic density and high cuticle thicknesses. High trichomic density and low stomatic density in the adaxial side were the herbicide barriers observed in the leaves of S. glaziovii.

Avaliou-se a eficiência de sulfosate, glifosate potássico e de diferentes formulações do glyphosate sobre Digitaria horizontalis quando os produtos foram aplicados em condições de pós emergência e as plantas foram submetidas à simulação de chuva de 20 mm durante 50 minutos, nos intervalos de 1, 2, 4 e 6 horas após aplicação dos herbicidas. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, no período de janeiro a abril de 2000, em Viçosa-MG. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições, sendo os tratamentos dispostos no esquema de parcelas sub-subdivididas. A fitotoxicidade dos herbicidas sobre D. horizontalis foi avaliada aos 3, 7, 14, 21 e 28 DAA (dias após aplicação dos herbicidas). Aos 45 DAA, avaliou-se a biomassa seca da rebrota em relação à testemunha sem herbicida. A eficiência do controle cresceu com o aumento do intervalo de tempo entre a aplicação dos herbicidas e a simulação de chuva, para todos os herbicidas. Não se observaram diferenças entre o glifosate potássico, o sulfosate e a formulação do glyphosate denominada Roundup Transorb®, para as mesmas condições de aplicação. Estes tratamentos proporcionaram menor capacidade de rebrota das plantas de D. horizontalis quando o intervalo sem chuva após a aplicação foi de 4-6 horas. As formulações de glyphosate SL e WG foram mais afetadas pela chuva em todos os intervalos avaliados, quando comparada com os demais tratamentos herbicidas. The effectiveness of sulfosate, potassium glyphosate and different glyphosate formulations on Digitaria horizontalis was evaluated when the products were applied in post emergence conditions and the plants were submitted to 20 mm simulated rainfall during 50 minutes, at intervals of 1, 2, 4 and 6 hr after herbicide application. The experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions from January to April 2000, in Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil, arranged in a split split-plot randomized block design with four replications. The phytotoxic effect of the herbicides on D. horizontalis was evaluated at 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 DAA (days after application). At 45 DAA, the shoot dry biomass was compared to the control (without herbicide). No differences were observed among potassium glyphosate, sulfosate and glyphosate formulations (Roundup Transorb®) for similar application conditions. These treatments provided lower regrowth of D. horizontalis, when the interval without rain following application was of 46 hr. Glyphosate SL and WG formulations were the most affected by rainfall in all the intervals evaluated, when compared to other herbicide treatments.

The objective of this work was to study the influence of adjuvants on leaching and persistence of sulfentrazone in a Red-Yellow Ultisol. The soil was stored in PVC columns of 10 cm diameter and 50 cm length. The treatments were composed of sulfentrazone mixed with six adjuvants (Adesil®, Break-Thru®, Assist®, Hoefix®, Fera® and Nortox® Vegetable Oil), a treatment with sulfentrazone without any adjuvant and a treatment without the herbicide. In the treatments with sulfentrazone, the herbicide was applied at a rate of 1.0 kg ha-1 at the top of the columns, and 12 hours after application, the columns were subjected to simulated rainfall (60 mm). To confirm leaching of sulfentrazone, soil samples were collected every 5 cm up to 50 cm in each column and transferred to 300 cm3 pots to conduct a bioassay using the species Sorghum bicolor. At 21 days after emergence (DAE) of sorghum, visual assessment of intoxication was performed and shoot dry matter percentage was determined. To determine the influence of adjuvants on persistence of sulfentrazone in the soil, new sorghum seeds were planted as soon as the sorghum plants from the first planting were cut; also, phytotoxicity scores were assigned and shoot dry matter was determined at 21 DAE. This procedure was repeated up to 173 days after herbicide application, when the plants showed no more visual symptoms of intoxication. The adjuvant Break-Thru® was effective at reducing leaching of sulfentrazone. The presence of adjuvants applied together with sulfentrazone did not influence the persistence of the herbicide in the study soil. Persistence of sulfentrazone lasted for 143 days. RESUMO: Objetivou-se neste trabalho estudar a influência de adjuvantes na lixiviação e na persistência do sulfentrazone em um Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo. O solo foi acondicionado em colunas de PVC de 10 cm de diâmetro por 50 cm de comprimento. Os tratamentos foram compostos pela combinação do herbicida sulfentrazone misturado a seis adjuvantes (Adesil®, Break-Thru®, Assist®, Hoefix®, Fera® e Óleo Vegetal Nortox®), um tratamento com sulfentrazone sem adjuvante e um tratamento sem herbicida. Nos tratamentos com sulfentrazone, o herbicida foi aplicado na dose de 1,0 kg ha-1 no topo das colunas, e, 12 horas após a aplicação, as colunas foram submetidas à chuva simulada (60 mm). Para confirmação da lixiviação do herbicida, em cada coluna, foram coletadas amostras de solo a cada 5 cm até 50 cm e transferidas para vasos de 300 cm3, onde foi realizado o bioensaio utilizando a espécie Sorghum bicolor. Aos 21 dias após a emergência (DAE) do sorgo, foi avaliada a intoxicação visual e a matéria seca da parte aérea. Para determinação da influência dos adjuvantes na persistência do sulfentrazone no solo, assim que as plantas de sorgo do primeiro plantio foram cortadas, realizou-se o plantio de novas sementes de sorgo e, aos 21 DAE, foram dadas notas de fitotoxicidade e determinou-se a matéria seca da parte aérea. Esse procedimento foi repetido até 173 dias após a aplicação do herbicida, quando não foram mais observados sintomas de intoxicação nas plantas. O adjuvante Break-Thru® foi eficiente em reduzir a lixiviação do sulfentrazone. A presença dos adjuvantes aplicados junto ao herbicida não influenciou na persistência do sulfentrazone no solo estudado. A persistência do herbicida foi de 143 dias.
