Tibouchina pulchra (Cham.) Cogn. (Melastomataceae) is a native tree species from the southeast region of Brazil. This early successional species significantly contributes to the characteristic physiognomy and structure of the Atlantic Rain Forest. Saplings were exposed to carbon filtered air (CF), ambient non–filtered air (NF), and ambient non–filtered air +40 ppb ozone (NF+O3), 8 h per day during two months, using open top chambers (OTC). The AOT40 values at the end of the experiment were 48, 910 and 12 895 ppb h–1, respectively for each treatment. After 25 days of exposure, interveinal red stippling appeared in plants in the NF+O3 chamber (AOT40=3 871 ppb h–1). In the NF chamber, symptoms were observed only after 60 days of exposure (AOT40=910 ppb h–1). No changes were observed for total phenolic contents when comparing ozone treatments. The aim of this work was to develop a micropropagation protocol for Alibertia edulis, a medicinal Brazilian Cerrado plant. A. edulis seeds were sterilized and germinated in water-agar. Fifteen millimeter long explants from the seedlings cultivated for 50 days were used for the multiplication in three consecutive subcultures. The cytokinin benzyladenine (BA) alone or combined with indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) was added to ¼ MS medium. The treatments containing combinations of the BA + IBA induced more shoot proliferation than the BA alone, with the optimum concentration of 0.5 mg.L-1 for both growth regulators. A. edulis shoots elongated easily and the presence of growth regulators did have a positive effect on the shoot elongation. Consecutive subcultures also had a positive effect on both sprouting and shoot elongation. Activated charcoal was essential for rooting, and all rooted plants were able to acclimatize.Foi desenvolvido um protocolo de micropropagação para A. edulis, uma espécie arbórea frutífera e medicinal presente no Cerrado brasileiro. Sementes de A. edulis foram esterilizadas e germinadas em ágar-água. Explantes de 15 mm foram retirados das plântulas e cultivados por 50 dias em meio de multiplicação e três subculturas. A citocinina benzilalanina (BA), sozinha ou em combinação com ácido indol butírico (IBA) foram adicionados em no meio ¼ MS. Os tratamentos contendo combinações de BA-IBA induziram uma maior proliferação de brotos que aqueles somente com BA, e a concentração ótima desses reguladores de crescimento foi de 0.5 mg.L-1 para cada. Os brotos de A. edulis facilmente se alongaram e a presença de reguladores de crescimento no meio de cultura teve efeito positivo sobre o alongamento. Da mesma forma, as consecutivas subculturas tiveram um efeito positivo tanto sobre a brotação quanto no alongamento. Carvão ativado foi essencial para o enraizamento dos ramos, e todas as plantas foram aclimatadas com sucesso.

RESUMOO fogo é comum no Cerrado e, geralmente, ocorre durante a seca, quando várias espécies frutificam ou dispersam as sementes. Entretanto, pouco se sabe sobre os efeitos do fogo na germinação das espécies do Cerrado. Este trabalho investigou o efeito da exposição a altas temperaturas na germinação de sementes de Dalbergia miscolobium Benth. e Plathymenia reticulata Benth., comuns no Cerrado e com uso potencial para recuperação de áreas degradadas e na recomposição de áreas de preservação permanente. As sementes foram coletadas em agosto de 2011, pesadas, separadas em três classes de tamanho e expostas a três temperaturas: 80 ºC, 100 ºC e 150 ºC por 2 e 5 minutos. Após os tratamentos, as sementes foram colocadas para germinar. A exposição a altas temperaturas afetou, de forma diferenciada, a germinação das espécies. Independentemente da classe de tamanho, a exposição das sementes até 100 °C, por 2 e 5 minutos, não alterou a germinação de D. miscolobium (91%). O presente estudo teve como objetivo descrever a composição de espécies arbóreas e a estrutura de um fragmento de Floresta Estacional Decidual, na região Nordeste de Goiás, Brasil. Foram levantadas 25 unidades amostrais quadradas de 20x20m, totalizando uma amostra de um hectare, sendo incluídos na amostragem todos os indivíduos com diâmetros iguais ou superiores a 5cm. Foram amostrados 663 indivíduos pertencentes a 52 espécies arbóreas, destacando-se pela densidade as espécies Combretum duarteanum Camb., Casearia rupestris Eichl., Myracrodruon urundeuva Fr. Allem., Machaerium acutifolium Vog. e Tabebuia impetiginosa (Mart. ex DC.) Standl. Foram encontradas 21 famílias botânicas, com maior representatividade da família Leguminosae (17 espécies) e das famílias Bignoniaceae (4 espécies), Anacardiaceae (3 espécies) e Bombacaceae (3 espécies). A vegetação estudada apresentou dossel descontínuo e distribuição diamétrica desequilibrada, com valores do quociente de Liocourt "q" variando de q1= 0,66 a q6 = 0,14. Estes remanescentes florestais desempenham papel importante na manutenção da diversidade biológica e possuem espécies arbóreas madeiráveis de importância econômica, que se tornaram raras em outros locais da região Nordeste de Goiás. The objective of this study was to describe the floristic composition and the structure of the tree layer of a fragment of a seasonal deciduous forest in northeastern Goiás state, Brazil. A sample of 25 (20x20) plots was assessed totaling one hectare. All individuals for 5cm dbh were included in the survey. A total of 663 trees in 52 arboreal species was found; the most abundant species were Combretum duarteanum Camb., Casearia rupestris Eichl., Myracrodruon urundeuva Fr. Allem., Machaerium acutifolium Vog. and Tabebuia impetiginosa (Mart. ex DC.) Standl. There were 21 families with a higher proportion of Leguminosae (17 species) Bignoniaceae (4 species), Anacardiaceae (3 species) and Bombacaceae (3 species). The forest presented an open canopy and an unbalanced diameter distribution, with Liocourt's quocient "q" values ranging from q1=0,66 to q6=0.14. These forest remnants play an important role in the maintenance of the biological diversity and contain valuable timber species that are becoming rare in the surrounding regions.

A casca é um tecido protetor do câmbio e a exposição a temperaturas acima de 60°C durante 1 a 2 minutos é um dos principais fatores que causam a mortalidade de árvores em incêndios florestais. Neste trabalho foi estudado o nível de proteção da casca, como isolante térmico, de três espécies do cerrado: Pterodon pubescens, Vochysia thyrsoidea e Sclerolobium paniculatum e do Eucalyptus grandis e a influência da arquitetura da casca na transferência de calor. Foram retiradas amostras na forma de painéis da casca de cinco árvores de cada espécie. Determinou-se o tempo necessário para que a temperatura no câmbio alcançasse 60ºC (temperatura letal) e o coeficiente de rugosidade (arquitetura) pela relação entre a área real e a área nominal da amostra. O Sclerolobium paniculatum, com menor espessura de casca, possui o menor tempo de resistência ao calor e o Eucalyptus grandis e o Pterodon pubescens os maiores tempos de resistência ao calor. A exceção foi a gomeira que com a maior espessura de casca possui um dos menores tempos de resistência ao calor. A espécie com maior correlação entre o tempo de resistência ao calor e a espessura de casca total foi o Sclerolobium paniculatum (r = 0,93). O Pterodon pubescens e o Eucalyptus grandis possuem r = 0,73 e r = 0,56, respectivamente, e a gomeira possui um baixo coeficiente de correlação (r = 0,34). A rugosidade da gomeira foi maior e diferiu significativamente das demais. No entanto, o coeficiente de correlação entre o tempo e a rugosidade não foi significativo para todas as espécies, sugerindo que o aumento da rugosidade não influenciou a transferência de calor através da casca. The bark is a protective tissue of the tree-cambium and the exposition to temperatures above 60oC for 1 to 2 minutes, which is one of the main factors that cause tree mortality in forest fires. In this research, it was studied the bark protection levels of Eucalyptus grandis and of three tree-species of 'cerrado': Pterodon pubescens, Sclerolobium paniculatum and Vochysia thyrsoidea and the effects of these tree bark architectures in heat transfer. Samples were taken from bark panels representing five trees of each species. The time of heat exposure required to damage the tree-cambium until temperature reached 60oC (lethal temperature) and the roughness coefficient (architecture) was estimated by the ratio between the actual area and the nominal sample area. The Sclerolobium paniculatum, with thinner bark, showed the shortest time and Eucalyptus grandis and Pterodon pubescens the longer time. The only exception was Vochysia thyrsoidea with a greater thickness and showed the shortest times. The tree species with the highest correlation between time and the total thickness was Sclerolobium paniculatum (r = 0,93). Pterodon pubescens and Eucalyptus grandis showed r = 0,73 and r = 0,56, respectively and Vochysia thyrsoidea presented the lower correlation coefficient (0,34). The highest roughness was observed for Vochysia thyrsoidea, which was significantly different from the other tree-species. However, the correlation coefficient between time and surface roughness was not significant for all tree-species, which suggest that the increase of the roughness did not affect the heat transfer through the bark.

Foram realizados levantamentos floristicos para conhecer as especies arboreas, arborescentes e arbustivas no Municipio de Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul. As coletas foram feitas por meio de caminhamentos em 21 fragmentos em diferentes estados de conservacao. A vegetacao estudada pertence a duas fitofisionomias: matriz de paisagem florestal distribuida sobre a Encosta do Escudo Sul-Riograndense e matriz campestre na Planicie Costeira. A riqueza encontrada foi de 148 especies distribuidas em 101 generos e 48 familias. Myrtaceae, com 24 especies, foi a familia de maior riqueza, mostrando generos representativos em especies: Eugenia (7), Myrcia (4), Myrcianthes e Myrceugenia (3). Outros generos apresentaram quatro especies cada, que foram Schinus (Anacardiaceae), Baccharis (Asteraceae) e Myrsine (Myrsinaceae) . Ocorreu baixa contribuicao de arvores da familia Fabaceae com apenas duas especies, sendo genero Inga ausente em matas ciliares. Constatou-se a ocorrencia de especies de distribuicao geografica tipicamente tropical como: Geonoma schottiana Mart (Arecaceae) , Alchornea triplinervia (Spreng.) Mull.Arg (Euphorbiaceae) e Schefflera morototoni (Aubl.) Maguire, Steyerm. & Frodin (Araliaceae) e taxons de carater temperado como Azara uruguayensis (Speg.) Sleumer (Salicaceae) e Quillaja brasiliensis Mart. (Quillajaceae). Isso demonstra uma area biogeografica de ecotono entre a Mata Atlântica stricto sensu e o Bioma Pampa. Desde modo a biodiversidade e considerada elevada em virtude das latitudes e das baixas temperaturas no periodo de inverno, sendo necessarios estudos para desenvolver meios adequados para sua conservacao, restauracao e manejo florestal. Floristic composition of forest species in Pelotas Municipality, Rio Grande do Sul state Abstract The floristic composition of forest fragments was surveyed including tree, arborescent and shrub species in forest fragments in the municipality of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul state, southernmost Brazil. Data was collected by the ‘walking’ method in 21 forest fragments with different conservation status. The vegetation studied was characterized by two phytophysiognomies: a forest landscape matrix (Sul-Riograndense Slopes) and a grassland (Coastal Plain). A total of 148 species distributed in 101 genera and 48 families were found. Myrtaceae , with 24 species was the richest family, with genera representative in number of species: Eugenia (7), Myrcia (3), Myrcianthes (3), and Myrceugenia (3). Other genera had four species each: Schinus (Anacardiaceae), Baccharis (Asteraceae) and Myrsine (Myrsinaceae). Fabaceae with only two species contributed little to tree richness, with the Inga genus absent in riverine areas. There were species with typically tropical geographic distribution range such as Genoma schottiana Mart (Arecaceae), Alchornea triplinervia (Spreng.) Mull.Arg (Euphorbiaceae) and Schefflera morototoni (Aubl.) Maguire, Steyerm. & Frodin (Araliaceae ), and taxa with temperate affinity such as Azara uruguayensis (Speg.) Sleumer (Salicaceae) and Quillaja brasiliensis Mart (Quillajaceae). This shows a biogeographic ecotone area between Mata Atlantica stricto sensu and Pampa Biome. But biodiversity is considered to be high because of latitude and low temperatures during winter. Further studies are necessary to develop appropriate strategies of conservation, restoration and management of trees and forest resources.

Rudgea jasminoides (Rubiaceae) is a tropical tree species native of the Atlantic Forest in the south of Brazil. Previous studies with leaf cell walls of R. jasminoides showed a different proportion of cross-linked glycans compared to what is usually reported for eudicots. However, due to the difficulties of working with whole plant organs, cell suspensions of R. jasminoides, consisting of predominantly undifferentiated cells with mainly primary cell walls, were used to examine cell walls and extracellular soluble polysaccharides (EP) released into the culture medium. Sugar composition and linkage analysis showed homogalacturonans, xylogalacturonans and arabinogalactans to be the predominant EP. In the cell wall, homogalacturonans and arabinogalactans are the major pectins, and xyloglucans and xylans are the major cross-linking glycans. The presence of xylogalacturonans in the R. jasminoides cell cultures seems to be related to the occurrence of a homogeneous cell suspension with loosely attached cells. Although all alkali extractions from the cell walls yielded amounts of xyloglucan that exceed those of the xylans, the latter was found in a proportion that is higher than what has been usually reported for primary cell walls of most eudicots. The xyloglucan from cell walls of cell suspension cultures of R. jasminoides has low fucosylation levels and high proportion of galactosyl residues, a branching pattern commonly found in storage cell-wall xyloglucans.

O trabalho apresenta o estudo taxonômico das espécies do gênero Nectandra no Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil. Baseados na análise morfológica dos espécimes coletados em diferentes regiões do Estado são confirmados oito espécies de Nectandra: N. amazonum Nees, N. cissiflora Nees, N. cuspidata Nees, N. falcifolia (Nees) J.A. Castigl. ex Mart. Crov. & Piccinini, N. gardneri Meisn., N. hihua (Ruiz & Pav.) Rohwer, N. megapotamica (Spreng.) Mez e N. psammophila Nees. É fornecida uma chave de identificação para as espécies e apresentados descrições morfológicas, dados de distribuição geográfica, habitat, aspectos fenológicos, comentários taxonômicos e ilustrações para cada espécie. ABSTRACT - This paper presents the taxonomic study of the species of Nectandra from Mato Grosso do Sul. Eight species of Nectandra were identified through the morphological analyses of specimens collected in different regions from the State: N. amazonum Nees, N. cissiflora Nees, N. cuspidata Nees, N. falcifolia (Nees) J.A. Castigl. ex Mart. Crov. & Piccinini, N. gardneri Meisn., N. hihua (Ruiz & Pav.) Rohwer, N. megapotamica (Spreng.) Mez and N. psammophila Nees. Identification key, morphological descriptions, geographic distribution, habitat, fenologic aspect, taxonomic comments, and illustrations are presented.
