La littérature concernant les espaces frontaliers (borderlands) s’est considérablement développée durant les trente dernières années, notamment en anthropologie. La vision globaliste d’un monde sans frontière s’est peu à peu effacée pour laisser place à des études qui, d’une part, et notamment dans le contexte sud-est asiatique, pointaient la spécificité des marges frontalières caractérisées par des ensembles culturels transversaux et, d’autre part, une littérature qui soulignait le tournant sécuritaire contemporain dans la gestion des limites nationales et internationales. La frontière entre le nord-est thaïlandais et la Plaine de Vientiane a longtemps été étudiée sous l’angle de la première perspective, perçue comme un espace fluidifié par l’appartenance commune au groupe ethnolinguistique lao des populations des deux rives. Basé sur une recherche ethnographique de quinze mois auprès de deux villages frontaliers, cet article interroge la porosité de la frontière isan-lao par les modalités pratiques et quotidiennes de sa régulation, des usages du fleuve comme ressource et des circulations d’une rive à l’autre. Cette topographie pratique de l’espace frontalier permettra de montrer comment, malgré l’informalité du passage, celui-ci constitue un espace densément et différentiellement structuré de part et d’autre. The literature on borderlands has grown considerably over the past 30 years, particularly in anthropology. The globalist vision of a borderless world has gradually faded away to make way for studies which, on the one hand, particularly in the Southeast Asian context, pointed to the specificity of the border margins characterized by transverse cultural groups and, on the other hand, a literature which underlined the contemporary security turn in the national and international borders management. The border between northeastern Thailand and the Vientiane Plain in Laos, has long been described from the first perspective, perceived as a space made fluid by the common belonging to the Lao ethno-linguistic group of populations of both shores. Based on a fifteen months PhD field research in two border villages, this article aims to question the Isan-Lao border porosity through the practical and daily modalities of its control, the use of the river as a resource and the circulation from one bank to the other. This practical topography of the borderland will show how, despite the informal nature of the passage, it constitutes a densely and differently structured space on both sides.

Proposing a detailed ethnography of inter-village relations on the Lao-Thai border, my work intends to analyze, on the one hand, the role of national and local uses of the past in the structuring and the establishment of social boundaries superimposed on the state borders and question the ambiguous relations that the different cross-border actors have with the nation-states, their history and their actors. On the other hand, by the description of the uses and the actors of the border my research questions the general affirmations established by a generation of researcher concerning the social and cultural continuity between the Lao and the Isan people, the latter who are the inhabitants of a region (northeast of Thailand) which is fundamental for the understanding of contemporary Thai politics.; Proposant une ethnographie minutieuse des relations intervillageoises sur la frontière Lao-thaïlandaise, mon travail entend analyser, d'une part, le rôle des usages nationaux et locaux du passé dans la structuration et l’établissement de frontières sociales se superposant aux frontières étatiques et interrogent les relations ambigües que les différents acteurs transfrontaliers entretiennent avec les Etats-nations, leur histoire et leurs acteurs. D'autre part, par la description des usages et des acteurs de la frontière ma recherche questionne les affirmations générales établies par une génération de chercheur concernant la continuité sociale et culturelle des Lao et des habitants du nord-est thaïlandais, région fondamentale dans la compréhension de la politique thaïlandaise contemporaine.

La de nición y conceptualización del espacio fronterizo desde la perspectiva del análisis regional en Venezuela presenta algunas di cultades, pese al aporte de numerosos trabajos presentados en el país. La delimitación y la escala de estudio del contexto regional junto a la noción de linealidad y zonalidad del límite y la frontera hacen aún más difícil precisar dicho espacio. Este estudio persigue desarrollar una aproximación a la delimitación de un Sistema Metropolitano Binacional: San Cristóbal-Cúcuta a partir de las distintas propuestas existentes usando la herramienta de Sistemas de Información Geográ ca (SIG). Resultados demuestran que la interacción espacial fronteriza de ne dos subsistemas urbanos históricamente vinculados con una identidad binacional sustentada en la tesis de la Zona de Integración Fronteriza (ZIF), áreas metropolitanas determinadas y los Planes de Ordenación del Territorio decretados en dichos espacios. Es necesario vincular la propuesta de delimitación con la nueva estructura de coordinación y acciones de política territorial planteada para alcanzar el desarrollo regional a través de los Consejos Federales de Gobierno, mediante la creación de un Distrito Motor Fronterizo para el fortalecimiento de dicho eje. The notion and de nition of borderland space from the viewpoint of regional geography in Venezuela have some troubles, despite a large number of works done in the country. De nition and scale of study in the regional context along with the idea of the linearity and border area of the boundary and borderland make even complex to de ne this space. This paper aims to develop an approach to de ne Binational Metropolitan System: San Cristobal-Cucuta from existing proposals using Geographical Information System (GIS) tool. Results show that boundary spatial interaction occurring on these urban systems is historically linked to binational identity, which is based on the border area integration (ZIF), the metropolitan areas, and Management Plan studies rati ed on these spaces. Furthermore, the proposal of delimitation needs to be linked with the new structure of coordination and territorial policy action recently raised by the Federal Council of Government, through the creation of Boundary Motor District to strengthening these axis. La dé nition et conceptualisation de l’espace frontalière, à partir de la perspective de l’analyse régional au Venezuela, pose quelques dif cultés, malgré l’apport de nombreux travaux présentés au pays. La délimitation et l’échelle d’étude du contexte régional, à côté de la notion de linéarité et de zonation de la limite et de la frontière, font encore plus dif cile de préciser cet espace. This work draws upon 20 years of research on border zones, peripheral areas, and the margins of State territory. Through a variety of fieldwork sites and case studies from central Africa to Morocco and Lebanon, I examine the multiple transformations of borders in a neoliberal era and question the place of territorial margins in a global world. Methodologically, the book develops a multiple-focus approach that is predominantly based on personal investigations and accordingly, makes ample room for the researcher's subjectivity. My research is primarily concerned with transgressive social practices in border zones and how the latter become instrumentalized by ordinary people. This play with the distortions created by the borders highlights the persistence of a State framework inherited from colonialism. Although some borderlands feature highly profitable activities from which they benefit, most borderlands appear as regions of tensions where identities are being rewrought, contested, asserted, and reinforced. In other words, border areas raise significant issues related to globalization. Most importantly, they show very clearly the discontinuities and inequalities that result from globalization processes. Empirical field observations demonstrated a strong link between border locations and informal activities, suggesting a key issue to reflect further on the geographies of informality and illegality. The umbrella-concept of 'informal' seems to be increasingly popular in the social sciences. The concept could be defined as a transgressive playing with the rules. It needs to be tackled in a global spatial perspective and linked to a reflection about law. The nature of the link between borderland and informality has become a main issue to explore., Ces pages retracent un itinéraire scientifique marqué par un tropisme pour les bordures, zones périphériques ou frontalières au sein de territoires d'Etat. De l'Afrique subsaharienne au Maroc en passant par le Liban, les terrains ont été variés pour examiner les avatars des frontières à l'heure néolibérale et questionner l'insertion des marges périphériques dans la globalisation. Le propos revient sur une posture méthodologique caractérisée par le décentrement du regard et une démarche d'enquêtes ancrée sur la subjectivité de la chercheuse. Les espaces frontaliers ont surtout été abordés à l'aune de leurs usages et de leurs pratiques transgressives. Celles-ci éclairent le maintien d'une grille stato-nationale d'origine exogène et héritée. Certaines bordures frontalières s'affirment comme des lieux de profitabilité, mais elles sont aussi souvent des zones de tensions et de cristallisation identitaire. Bref, elles informent sur les processus de mondialisation, les discontinuités et les inégalités qu'ils engendrent. Mes observations empiriques ont mis en exergue un lien récurrent entre la frontière et la présence d'activités informelles, ouvrant une piste de réflexion sur une géographie de l'informalité et de l'illégalité. Concept-valise, l'informel revient en force dans le champ académique. La notion, définie comme jeu transgressif avec les règles, demande à être étudiée avec une approche spatiale globale et en interrogeant le droit. La nature de la connexion entre frontière et informalité reste une question à creuser.
