Bookseller and publisher for more than 25 years, François Maspero is perceived by the new generation of critical publishers as a key figure in commitment through books. His atypical professional life is coherent with that period of contemporary French history characterised by the challenges of decolonialisation, the war in Algeria, and the ideological debates between the years following the uprising in May 1968 until political alternation of 1981. His actions in favour of Algerian independence and his revolutionary stand, illustrated by the publishing of such magazines as Partisans and Tricontinentale, are noteworthy. Working out of the Place Paul-Painlevé, the publisher also contributed significantly to the use of alternate approaches to the fields of social sciences and the humanities. He was closely associated with the cultural upheavals of the time and acted as a transmitter of perceptions held by the Third World at a time when they were unknown in France. This article provides information on the book publishing industries of South Korea, Brazil and Central and Eastern Europe. The Korean bookselling market comprises of three main types of business: small independents, large wholesalers, and online bookstores. As there are no large bookseller chain stores in Korea, Internet bookstores are the only true national stores and as of 2002 control 10% of the total book sales market. Korean publishing companies, not including the foreign multinational companies, tend to be small privately owned companies, and on the whole, are no larger than around 10 to 15 employees. Meanwhile, Brazilian publishing houses are increasingly better structured and managed--more competitive in relation both to domestic and foreign markets. This has brought long-term partnerships between Brazilian and foreign publishing houses. The Brazilian editorial market is still characterized by developing and maintaining relationships based on loyalty between foreign authors, editors, and publishing houses. The publishing industry in Poland slowed down during the second half of the 1990s but the Poles remain book lovers especially in the fiction genre. Print runs of books have decreased during the period. This is also the same for Hungary.

Selling journals to consortia and other large customers is increasingly difficult for small publishers, and yet libraries want their journals. The ALPSP Learned Journals Collection (ALJC) was put together, after considerable research, as an attempt to overcome this problem for ALPSP member publishers. Working through Swets Information Services, 247 journals from 25 publishers can be sold as a single package. Despite the difficulties, a single publisher agreement, customer licence, and pricing and revenue-sharing model were all agreed upon. This article reports that "The History of Our Own Times," was a fortnightly magazine published by the London bookseller Charles Corbett early in 1741. It was founded and abandoned all within two months, from 15 January to 5 March, making a run of only four issues. Still, the History of our own Times was barely noticed while it lived and has continued unknown since. Hardly any copies of it exist, probably because there never were very many in the first place. The magazine was designed and partly written by Henry Fielding, as the contents plainly show, and it must be added to the list of four periodical papers with which he has always been connected.

This time, we talked to Len Fulton who founded Dustbooks almost forty years ago and who is currently publishing Small Press Review, as well as a handful of annual directories and occasional book. The article focuses on the standard peer reviewed journal which rest on three pillars. This includes, the interest and importance of the submissions, the value and efforts of the reviewer and the quality of the editing. The editors see reviewing as a community task where all active scientists should be as ready to take part as they are to submit papers for review. It is one basis of corporate interest and responsibility that one can maintain the independence and quality of the science published. The approach to manage the reducing delays in publication, journal will move in 2007 to immediate on-line publication of papers once accepted and edited.
