This paper discusses the importance of Zannetos’ 1966 book for the development of maritime economic thought. The main contributions of the book are recounted, and the empirical work in the book is reviewed. The analysis of the present paper is a citation research on the maritime economics literature that refers to the book. Of the 42 papers in the set, about one-third refers to the book in general. A total of 35 papers refer to one or more elements of the book, with an equal number of references to: (1) the term structure of freight rates; (2) the empirical findings on the form of the supply curve; and (3) on the verification of his results. The general conclusion of the citation analysis is that, apparently, a number of elements of his work are still very valid for current maritime economics thinking, while maritime economists have disregarded several other elements. The latter seems unjustified for some of the business structure observations that are made in the book, such as the notion that the ship is the firm, and the elasticity of expectations. The former observation is the basis for virtually all empirical work in maritime economics that is based on individual contract data (all freight rate analysis is of this nature), and the second is the basis for the analysis of investment behaviour in shipping, investigations of cyclicality and so on. Zannetos can definitely be seen as the initiator of the important field of term structure analysis in maritime economics. In addition to this, there are several topics in the 1966 book that are as yet unexplored, and deserve empirical scrutiny. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ECONOMICS literature ,ECONOMICS ,BOOKS ,RELIGION ,LABOR ,UNEMPLOYMENT ,CLASSICAL school of economics - Abstract
This article introduces several books on economics. The book "On Economics and the Canadian Bishops," by Block Walter discusses the principle of preferential option for the oppressed and priority of labor over capital upon which the report is based and highlights difficulties associated with them. The book criticizes the strategies proposed in the report regarding the cure of unemployment rather than inflation, the industrial strategy of low technology and high labor intensity, wage and price controls, welfare and the role of labor unions. "Religion, Economics and Social Thought," edited by Walter Block and Irving Hexham comprises twelve papers with comments, discussions or replies presented at an International Symposium on Religion, Economics and Social Thought in Vancouver, British Columbia, in August 1982. The Roman Catholic view is presented in a discussion of classical social doctrine in the Roman Catholic church and recent Roman Catholic teaching--a shift to the left. "Counting the Cost: The Economics of Christian Stewardship," by Robin Kendrick Clay describes the tools of economic analysis and explains how they can be used in the light of Christian faith and ethics. The book examines the nature and necessity of economic choice wherever private and social wants outstrip available resources.

One of the books discussed by the author "Racial Factors in American Industry," H. Feldman. According to the author, in the book, a national organization for the promotion of cooperative investigations into the problems of human relations, has published another of the studies intended to promote effective social education, especially in dealing with conflicts between persons and groups of different race, religion, class, or nationality. BOOKS ,ECONOMICS literature ,PUBLIC finance ,TAXATION ,TARIFF ,STATISTICS ,ROADS - Abstract
This article focuses on the new books related to public finance, taxation and tariff, as of December 1931, published in the journal "American Economic Review." One of the books discussed by the author is "Report on Taxation in West Virginia," by R. Blaskey. This analysis of property taxation comprehends not only the situation in West Virginia but includes also a comparison with practice elsewhere. According to the author, the volume will prove helpful to students outside of West Virginia in several different respects. Much of the statistical data presented can be found elsewhere, if at all, only after considerable searching through administrative reports and other documents. This bringing together of quantitative information, though perhaps less complete than one could wish, will certainly be of material assistance to students of state finance everywhere. Some of the other books enlisted are: Studies in Taxation in Delaware Highway Finance," by M.M. Daugherty; and "Financial History of the United States," 11th ed., by D.R. Dewey.

One of the books the author has described is "Wechsel und Scheclc in Europa und Uebersee," by H. Böttger. The author says that this might be termed a handbook of the laws, usages, and taxation of bills of exchange and checks in 52 countries. It will be most helpful to the practising banker and foreign exchange dealer. The discussion of the variety of laws and practices as well as the efforts to establish uniformity occupies only a few pages. Some of the books enlisted are: "Modern Currency and the Regulation of Its Value," by E. Cannan; "Branch, Group and Chain Banking," by G.T. BOOKS ,ECONOMICS literature - Abstract
The article discusses two books on economics: "Le teorie economiche di Davide Ricardo," by S.E. De Falco; "Efficiency and Scarcity Profits: An Economic and Legal Analysis of the Residual Surplus," by C.J. Foreman. By bringing together articles contributed by him to legal and economic journals and combining them with additional material, Foreman has produced a somewhat unusual blend of economic analysis and law. His central thought is the importance of distinguishing clearly between earned and unearned profits, which both judges and economists in his opinion have failed to do. Earned profits, the necessary reward of the entrepreneur's sacrifices and efficiency, the courts have always sought to protect, and in cases of infringement of patents have worked out an especially sound method of detecting and measuring them. Above "the plane of competition and normal value;' however, are the "unearned surpluses of opportunity and exploitation"; and industrial development has brought an increasing number of these. Failing to perceive their exploitative character and granting a freedom of contract much wider than that known to the original common law, the courts have too often validated gains growing out of restraints of trade.

This article presents information on various books related to social problems and reforms. The Book "How to Abolish the Slums," by E.D. Simon, offers a timely account of the slum problem in British Cities. Inspite of the self-satisfied boost that England has built over a million houses since the war, it is pointed out that the housing problem as on the verge of being solved for the clerk and artisan only, but for the poorer workers little or nothing has been done the condition of the alums in which they live is said to be worse today than it was before the war. The article also provides information on new books related to social reforms. Some of the books are "Nationalism Politics and Economics," by E. Batten, and "Give Prohibition its Chance," by E.A. This article presents information on several books on statistics and its methods. The book "F. Y. Edgeworth's Contributions to Mathematical Statistics," by A.L. Bowley is a epitome pertaining to mathematical statistics. The discussion of the "best mean" is a contribution to a subject that has had made careless handling. The careful work of edge-worth on the use of the median and the opening of the question as to the precision of various means is of great value. The book is of real value though, of course, it merely describes the work of one man in a subject that has been rapidly developed by many.

This article focuses on several books related to labor and labor organizations. The book "The Labor Movement in the United States, 1860-1895," by Norman J. Ware, is the second triology of volumes on American labor history. The book centers upon the knights of labor, dealing only briefly with the shadowy predecessors. Another book "Present Day Labor Relations: A Critical Examination of Methods of Collective Negotiations Between Employers and Employee," by Paul F. Gemmill, presents a short, non-technical treatment of labor relations in the United States. This article also presents list of new books related to labor. BOOKS ,MERGERS & acquisitions ,MINERAL industries ,PROFIT ,ECONOMICS literature - Abstract
This article presents information on several books related to capital and capitalistic organization. The book "Mergers in Industry: A Study of Certain Economic Aspects of Industrial Consolidation" is a statistical study of certain mergers in manufacturing and mining industries in the United States. These were important mergers to the extent that in one form or another they all continued to the present. The book assumes with reason, that true invested capital normally becomes in time a larger and larger proportion of nominal capital and surplus. Through the pre-war period the rate of profits compared with nominal capitals and surplus tended to fall. In pre-war times the mergers with whatever monopoly power they possessed were taking to themselves from the public a narrower and narrower manual margin of profit. The article also provides list of new books. Some of the new books are "Aspects of Public Utility Regulation in Massachusetts," by I.R Barner and "Manual of Monopolies and Federal Anti-Trust Laws," by L.J. Euler.

The article presents information on various books on public, finance, taxation, and tariff published in June, 1929. Some of the books included are: "The Classified Property Tax in the United States," by Simeon E. Leland. Students of tax reform will welcome the appearance of the present study in the field of state and local taxation. It embodies a thorough description and analysis of the classified property tax as it has developed in the United States, and hence brings together a collection of material which will prove highly beneficial to instructors in public finance, legislative bodies and tax officials generally. "The Kansas Tax on Intangibles," by J.P. Jensen. In summarizing the conclusions of the foregoing analysis it may be said that the low-rate taxes on intangibles have not so far been signally successful from a fiscal point of view. They have produced something like two-thirds of the revenue produced by the general property tax on intangibles. "Federal Income Tax," by J.J. Klmin. "Complete practical income tax," A.G. McBain.

The article presents information on various books on labor and labor organization published in June, 1929. Some of the books included are: "Wages in Practice and Theory," by J.W.F. Rowe. This book is a reconsideration of wage theory in the light of an historical study of wages during the last 40 years in five leading British industries--building, cotton, coal mining, engineering and railroading. the author does not abandon the orthodox position that wages tend to correspond to the marginal productivity of labor. It is extraordinary to find pressure for wages which exceed the marginal worth of the labor supply described as a "revision" of trade union policy. "Earning and working opportunity in the upholstery weavers' trade in twenty-five plants in Philadelphia: An experiment in cooperative research," by A. Bezanson. "Personnel and Labor Problems in the Packing Industry," by A.H. Carver. The author who is a member of the industrial relations department of Swift and Company of Chicago, writes for the "rank and file of administrative and supervisory officers" of industrial establishments.

BOOKS ,SOCIAL problems ,ECONOMICS literature - Abstract
The article presents information on books about social problems and reforms published in 1929. One of such books is, "Middletown: A Study in Contemporary American Culture," by Robert S. Lynd and Helen Merrell Lynd. Once in a while come patient person does the obvious and it turns out to be almost a stroke of genius. The social sciences have long extemporized about society, community and neighborhood. Special studies have made of the notorious trio, "dependent, defective and delinquent." But actual observation of any specific community as a whole has been left to the novelist and the anthropologist. Thus when Robert and Helen Lynd turn the searchlight of intelligent investigation upon a fairly typical town of the Middle West and publish 500 pages of interesting comment upon it we inclined to believe that there is something in what Carlyle said about genius. Another book is, "Incomes and Living Cost of a University Faculty. A Report Made by a Committee on the Academic Standard of Living Appointed by the Yale University Chapter of the American Association of University Professors," edited by Yandell Henderson and Maurice R. Davie.

The article presents information on books about population and migration. One of the books included is, "Immigration and Race Attitudes," E.S. Bogardus. This volume is well planned and organized. The author succeeds in bringing the causative factors of racial maladjustment and conflict to the foreground. The approach deals in a general way with the existence of the immigration problem, its importance in the United States, and defines race attitudes. Stress is laid upon status and its influence in determining individual and group reactions toward outsiders. The origins of race antipathy and race friendliness, together with the media through which these attitudes are created and expressed, re treated in the second part of the treatise. Particular thought is given to the numerous factors instrumental in producing changes or reversals in race attitudes. In the third section of the book the author accounts for variations in racial attitudes resulting from regional and cultural contacts with foreign peoples.

This book gives a list of all of the plans for stabilizing the purchasing power of money which are of recent origin, with criticisms of each plan as well as a study of the possible effectiveness of the various means by which stabilization can be accomplished. It is being compiled from the writings of the best known advocates of stabilization, official documents and banking and monetary statistics. BOOKS ,ACCOUNTING ,INVESTMENTS ,ECONOMICS literature - Abstract
The article presents information on various books on accounting, business methods, investments, and the exchanges. Some of the books included are "Investment Principles and Practices," by Ralph E. Badger. The literature in the field of investments has grown rapidly within recent years. This is due not only to an increasing realization of the social importance of wise application in production of society's savings. The book under consideration is a noteworthy addition to the newer literature in his field. "Essentials of Cost Accounting," by L.C. Amindon and T. Lang. The striking characteristics of this book is its clear exposition of a subject which is by no means simple. Clarity is attained through a differentiation between the art and the technique of cost accounting and the managerial aspects of costs and, what is rare in such a book, the giving of a minimum of attention to the later. Chapters follow on factory orders, materials, labor, burden, the factory ledger, and statement. "Material control and stores accounting," by C.C. Balderston.

BOOKS ,POPULATION ,HUMAN geography ,ECONOMICS literature - Abstract
The article presents information about various books on population and migration. The book "Causal Factors in Infant Mortality," by R.M. Woodbury is a statistical analyses of infant mortality. The data is from Children's bureau studies from urban centers, hence the conclusions apply primarily to infant mortality under urban. The infant mortality rate for the aggregate was thus 111.2 as compared with 103.3 for cities in birth registration area and 50.1 for New Zealand. Diseases of early infancy, which to a large extent have their origin in the condition and care of the mother during pregnancy and confinement, and gastric and intestinal diseases, which are due largely to improper feeding, account for more than two-thirds of the deaths. Male infants had higher death rates from practically every cause. This fact is attributed to physical vitality. A long section is devoted to frequency. The section on type of birth related to prematurity and plural births is also there. In the book "Principles of Human Geography," by P. Vidal De La Blache the authors assert that characteristic of human geography is conceived as the causal relation between culture and physical environment, and the attempt to unravel and understand these relations through a widesweeping historical method is essential.

BOOKS ,ACCOUNTING ,INVESTMENTS ,BUSINESS enterprises ,TRADE associations ,BOARDS of trade ,ECONOMICS literature - Abstract
The article focuses on various books related to accounting, business methods and investments. The author says that the key to modern business ethics is the trade association. The ethical influence of organized business in the form of trade associations, exchanges and chambers of commerce, is strongly emphasized. Of the 1500 national trade associations, probably not over 300 have provided for either uniform contracts or compulsory arbitration. The author says that the real friction is not between members, but between manufacturer, wholesaler and retailer. The study on industrial arbitration is full of suggestion. The question of unit of business and what a market is, are also discussed. The unit of business is taken as a business decision that would lay out a policy for future conduct of transactions in view of all kinds of costs and all kinds of customers. The market is said to be not an equilibrium of supply and demand but a connected system of demand and supply. Thus the unit of economic theory, a business decision, is an organic, dynamic constituent of a changing process of price-fixing, because, on account of the great predominance of overhead costs, specific costs cannot be known and prices cannot automatically gravitate towards them.

BOOKS ,TAXATION ,TARIFF ,ECONOMICS literature - Abstract
The article presents various books on taxation and tariffs. The book "World War Debt Settlements," by Harold G. Moulton and Leo Pasvolsky deals with the debts of the allies and the reparation debts. The author says that a debtor country in order to meet its annual payments on a foreign debt, must have an annual state budget in which there is an excess of revenues over expenditures equal to the amount of the annual payment; and a foreign trade surplus of exports over imports, corresponding in magnitude to the amount of the payment. Other books are "A Compilation of the Laws Relating to state Taxation and Revenue, Annotated and Indexed," by J.H. Fertig, R.S. Frey and B.R. Glidden, "The Law of the State of New York," by J.T. Fitzpatrick, "Summaries of Inheritance Tax Act of California and the Estate Tax Law of the United States," by A. Fougel and B. BOOKS ,FINANCE ,BANKING industry ,ECONOMICS literature - Abstract
The article presents information about various books on Finance, Currency and Banking. The book "Report of the Royal Commission on Indian Currency and Finance," is said to be a significant document. It has made the Indian currency system an autonomous one like Great Britain's. The report presents the views of the world's leading experts on monetary control and central banking. The Indian government has shared in the monetary disorganization of the war and post-war period. The merits of the proposal is that if successful it would put India squarely on the gold standard. The Commission has suggested for placing the Indian currency on a modern basis. The Royal Commission was called to determine the value of the rupee and to consider a program for a gold currency. The real feature of the report is the bank proposal. The author says that it is impossible to calculate the benefit to India and to the commercial world of a sound Indian currency. Other books are "Money: Its Connexion With Rising and Falling Prices," by E. Cannan and "La banque en Belgique: Étude Historique et Économique," by B.S. Chlenpner.
