The author read everything from the year's "best of" lists to select what he considered to be the six must-reads. This article presents the six books that he feels represent the "best of the best."

2. The Relationship between BIBFRAME and OCLC's Linked-Data Model of Bibliographic Description: A Working Paper

Abstract

This document describes a proposed alignment between BIBFRAME (Bibliographic Framework) and a model being explored by the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) with extensions proposed by the Schema Bib Extend project, a Worldwide Web Consortium sponsored (W3C-sponsored) community group tasked with enhancing Schema.org to the description of library resources. The key result is that the two efforts are complementary except for some common vocabulary required for the most important entities and relationships. The analysis presented in this document was prompted by the call at the end of the December 2012 BIBFRAME Early Experimenters Meeting for a set of Point or Position papers that work out technical issues and make recommendations for a number of sketchy, difficult, or controversial aspects of the BIBFRAME model. The description is based on a small dataset presented in the entirety in the Appendix. However, the analysis is based on a larger dataset derived from the application of a mapping algorithm from MARC to BIBFRAME on all of WorldCat.org. This document is being released as an OCLC report, but it is intended to be read as a working paper for the BIBFRAME community. Boys need books with which they can connect, books that reach out to them with characters that reflect themselves, books that feature people who speak and look and act like the people in their lives. Among the functions of literature in children's lives, two are particularly relevant: facilitating literacy skills and providing role models. The path to becoming a proficient reader begins with the spark of interest in a book--the desire to know more. Young male readers need to envision characters like themselves in active roles: solving problems, undertaking responsibilities, exhibiting leadership, accomplishing worthy tasks.

5. A Comparison of Multicultural Characters in the Annotations of Two Recommended High School Reading Lists Published Thirty-One Years Apart.

Abstract

This content analysis sought to examine the annotations in two editions of "Books for You" (a recommended reading list for high school students) published thirty-one years apart (1964 and 1995) to determine if the roles, settings, and importance of multicultural characters has changed in any way. The percentage of annotations was compared to United States Census population, including the following ethnic groups: African American, Native American, Asian/Pacific Islanders, Hispanic Americans, and those of mixed race. The results of the study show that the percentage of multicultural literature on this recommended reading list increased from 1964 to 1995 for all but Asian/Pacific Islanders. There was a dramatic increase in the number of books with settings in the United States. With the exception of Asian/Pacific Islanders, multicultural characters increased in importance. In general, the roles these characters occupied became somewhat less stereotypical, but not necessarily more varied. The results of the comparison to the United States Census were mixed, with some groups being overrepresented and others being underrepresented. A literature review is included. Data are represented in table form. Two appendices contain long and short forms of annotation coding sheets. (DLS)

On the Internet, one can not only buy books but also obtain information about publishers and vendors, book reviews, authors, and other book-related information. Even electronic texts are available for downloading or browsing online. The paper discusses World Wide Web sites for many book-related information needs, whether a person is searching for nonfiction and reference, various fiction genres, a bookseller specializing in rare books, or the newest book about the Internet itself. The paper describes InfoTrac and FirstSearch, and many of the other services available on the Internet for researching, browsing, purchasing, and downloading books. It also discusses the fact that the diverse book-related activity on the Internet contradicts the oft-heard notion that printed books might be on the verge of extinction. 9. Google vs. the Library (Part III): Assessing the Quality of Sources Found by Undergraduates

Abstract

This study assesses and compares the quality of sources found by undergraduate students when doing research using both Google and a library (federated) search tool. Thirty undergraduates were asked to find four sources (one book, two articles, and one additional source of their choosing) related to a selected research topic. Students used both Google and a federated search (resource discovery) tool to find material they believed to be relevant. Each source was evaluated for topic relevance, authority, appropriateness, and date, and assigned a total quality score. Results showed that the books found via Google were slightly higher quality than those uncovered via the federated search tool. The articles and additional sources students found via the federated search tool were slightly to moderately higher quality, respectively, than those discovered via Google.

11. Analysis of Citations to Books in Chemistry PhD Dissertations in an Era of Transition

Abstract

A citation analysis of chemistry PhD dissertations at the University of Texas at Austin yielded data on how often graduate students cite books in their bibliographies, and on the characteristics of the books cited, in terms of age and local ownership. The analysis examined samples of dissertations selected from five discrete years--1988, 2006, 2009, 2012, and 2015--in order to provide longitudinal data on how citation trends are changing during a transition period in libraries. Data indicated that chemistry graduate students cited low numbers of books relative to journal articles, confirming expectations from similar studies, and that the trend over the time period studied is downward, despite the increasing number and availability of e-books. The results could inform collection management decisions and strategies for promoting book content to graduate students in future.

12. Chickalicious: Want to Woo Reluctant Female Readers? Chick Lit May Be the Ticket

Abstract

Five years ago, when the author transferred from a local elementary school to her current position, she took one look at the dismal circulation figures and knew she had her work cut out for her. One of the first things she did was create a graphic novel section to attract young male readers. She also began stocking up on guy-friendly adventure and mystery stories. Then she reached out to reluctant female readers: What titles were they asking for? What would fire them up? The answer, she soon discovered, was chick lit for teens. Simply put, teen chick lit is upbeat, entertaining beach-type reads, written mostly by women, that feature young female characters. These fun books can be about boys, friendship, family, fitting in, or vacations, but the stories almost always involve self-discovery, offer an uplifting ending, and spotlight characters that are easy for girls to relate to (a huge reason for chick lit's soaring popularity). Today, teen chick lit comes in all shapes and sizes--from the traditional (with a hefty dose of dating and humor) to mysteries to paranormal romances. And its heroines can range from a teen witch in search of a cute prom date to a varsity cheerleader who happens to be skilled in hand-to-hand combat. In this article, the author presents a list of teen chick lit titles. Some of these titles are light and breezy romantic comedies, and others are deep and meaningful stories of friendship and loss.

13. Ornamental Gentlemen: Literary Curiosities and Queer Romanticisms

Abstract

The figure of the "bibliomaniacal" book collector with his "curious" malady--a "passion for collecting...that infects weak minds," according to Isaac D'Israeli (1766-1848)--serves as the focus of this dissertation about nineteenth-century British poetry and prose. More than a psychological condition or cultural practice, the bibliomaniac's mania also took the form of a discursive mode. Hence, this dissertation analyzes narratives of collecting as well as the figure of the book collector often central to them. In examining such narratives and the desires that drive them, I explore a cultural theory and practice not consumed by inspiration but inspired by consumption. I claim that the logic of book collecting instantiated the commodity form before it was theorized by Marx. But this fetish before the fetish, I also contend, was psychosexual as well as economic: the collector's alarming "curiosity" reflected the status of bibliomania as a sexual neurosis. The bibliomaniac, like earlier collectors such as the seventeenth-century Italianate virtuoso, was a queer type. The first chapter of the dissertation focuses on the archive of Thomas F. Dibdin housed at the Huntington Library. Dibdin, who styled himself an "ornamental Gentleman," celebrated the world of rare book collecting in a camp style marked by ornate book design and compulsive typographical emphasis. The chapter argues that both within and without bibliomaniacal circles, representations of collecting betray anxiety about the sexuality of the collector. I further claim that this anxiety intersected with concerns about collectors' materialistic and acquisitive style of cultural consumption. Far from being exclusive to the activities of collectors or bibliographers like Dibdin, the bibliomaniac's mode of consumption was intimately related to the culture of so-called "minor" Romanticism. The collecting practices of the bookish "hero" of "London Magazine" Charles Lamb and his Elia essays, including "Oxford in the Vacation," serve as the foci of the second chapter. Here I argue that Lamb's self-conception as a writer and his self-conscious preference for dog-eared volumes culled from London's used bookshops (his "ragged regiment of book tatterdemalions") played a role in his populist bohemianism. This personal and professional style reflected Lamb's efforts to distinguish himself from the emerging middle-class professional writer and at the same time marked his distance from the leisured man of letters. Lamb's prototypically punk cultural practices find a parallel in those of another writer for the magazines, Thomas De Quincey, whose writings and style of collecting are the subject of the third chapter. I argue that the "opium-eater's" allegedly unmatched consumption of opium did in fact have a peer--of a different stripe. Such was the avidity of De Quincey's collecting that at one point his library displaced his family from their home. But in the case of De Quincey, the fetishism of the literary was a theory as well as a practice. More specifically, De Quincey's materialistic relations with literature coextend with the theoretical position on transcendentalism taken in the "Confessions." Here, a picture of his youthful bibliomania--the surreptitious flight from Manchester Grammar School with a trunk of books--plays a central role in an ironic critique of both Kantian and Wordsworthian idealisms. These articulations of opposition in the theory and praxis of bibliomania recurred in one of its legacies, the Victorian literary society. Instrumental in the construction of Romanticism during the Victorian period, clubs like Frederick J. Furnivall's Shelley Society also continued the tradition of private printing begun by Dibdin's collecting society, the Roxburghe Club. Two active members of several such clubs were the bibliographers and forgers Thomas J. Wise (1859-1937) and Henry ("Harry") Buxton Forman (1842-1917). The pair's activities gained notoriety when rare first editions of works of Victorian poetry linked to them, including a famous edition of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's "Songs from the Portuguese," were identified as forgeries. In the context of a queer reading of their project and their legitimate as well as illegitimate works, I argue that Wise and Forman's culture of imposture identifies Romanticism as an artifact of bibliomania. This project on bibliomaniacal Romanticism and its afterlife makes two kinds of intervention, in literary history and queer studies. On the one hand, my research expands the present understanding of Romantic ideas about the material conditions of the making and partaking of art. On the other, in locating a bookish and queer aesthetic in the period, it develops a model for locating queerness within oppositional cultural practices in the nineteenth century. 14. Interchanges: The Value of Book Collecting for Research and Teaching

Abstract

When the author became a professor with interests in literature, composition, technical communication, speech, and rhetoric, he little anticipated the extent to which book collecting could affect research and teaching, but his finds increasingly enlightened him. As he gravitated toward composition, technical communication, speech, and rhetoric in his career, the author made most of his finds in these areas, and these finds added to his growing awareness of the value of book collecting for research and teaching. In this article, the author discusses how his discoveries enriched his view of historical reality. Through his discoveries, the author gradually became aware of inadequacies in bibliographic access and he came to respect the value of footwork and serendipity as research methodologies at a time when experimental research was overemphasized, especially in composition and technical communication. The author also discusses the role of book collectors in discovering new materials useful in research. While the use of computers in research will clearly and rightfully increase, ways must be found to ensure that those using computers will be able to access all of the information relevant to their research. Toward that end, the author offers two steps: (1) bibliographies must be exhaustive; and (2) descriptive techniques must be developed to suggest the contents of research materials.

15. Collection Development 'Mormonism': A Perfect Storm

This article talks about Mormonism, which has been sensationalized more often than most other religions. Since before the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and through Mitt Romney's run for the U.S. Presidency, an unprecedented number of news stories have been published about the Mormon faith. Historian Richard Bushman has termed the last decade a "perfect storm of publicity about Mormonism." Yet, despite the flood of media attention, many Americans remain unaware that the term Mormon is the "unofficial" name for the Salt Lake City-headquartered Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). And it does not help matters that LDS Church members are often interchangeably referred to as Latter-day Saints, or, simply, Saints. Recent popular titles about splinter groups from the original LDS Church--e.g., Carolyn Jessop and Laura Palmer's Escape (Broadway, 2007)--as well as reports about the Fundamentalist LDS of Texas, who are not Mormons, have contributed to additional confusion about Mormons' identities, practices, and beliefs. Here, the authors provide a brief history of the Mormons and present a list of resources, with more on the web, that bring to the religion collections. The authors include resources written by both believers and nonbelievers and advise librarians to collect across the spectrum of viewpoints. These resources include works of scripture, doctrinal overviews, contemporary views, and history. Some of these are recommended as core resources for all libraries.

18. A Place on the Shelf

Abstract

If we read to discover new worlds, we also read to find ourselves. For gays and lesbians, this act of discovery can be problematic: literature has so often excluded them. In the last decades, as gays and lesbians have grown increasingly vocal in the effort to secure their rightful place in society, a broad range of fiction has emerged that effectively captures their concerns. Whether gay or straight, readers interested in the gay/lesbian experience now have a wealth of books from which to choose. Collection development for gay and lesbian readers is complicated by several factors. First, the mainstreaming of gay- and lesbian-themed works ironically makes it harder to locate them easily. Second, for every reader seeking a complex literary novel, there is another who wants a sexy beach read and a third who wants a cozy mystery. While all libraries should carry some of the classics, including older titles like James Baldwin's "Giovanni's Room" and new classics like Sarah Waters's "Tipping the Velvet," libraries with larger gay and lesbian service populations will want to offer more selection, including genre reads and experimental novels. This article suggests titles in general gay men's and lesbian fiction, recent titles, mystery, romance, and speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, and horror).

This document is comprised of five publications of the early childhood section of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education: (1) prekindergarten literacy standards; (2) a teacher's guide to prekindergarten literacy standards; (3) a parent handbook regarding early literacy; (4) a Spanish-language version of the parent handbook; and (5) a Bosnian-language [Serbo-Croatian] version of the parent handbook. The standards, developed by a broad-based group of individuals representing the multi-faceted Missouri early childhood community, provide descriptions of what most children should know and be able to do by kindergarten entry and represent shared expectations for preschoolers in early literacy. The standards publication delineates the Missouri prekindergarten guiding principles and presents process standards, indicators of competency development, and examples of behaviors children may exhibit in the following areas: (1) symbolic development; (2) spoken/expressive language; (3) listening/receptive language; (4) written language; (5) knowledge of print and books; and (6) phonological awareness. The teacher's guide provides an explanation of the standards and offers practical suggestions for creating engaging, developmentally appropriate learning communities in which each child's literacy development is fostered. Also included in the guide are suggestions for involving families and a 42-item resource list of books, websites, magazines, newsletters, and brochures. The parent handbook introduces the standards, provides information on how a child may exhibit progress toward a particular standard or goal, and offers suggestions for parental support of children's literacy development. Divorce is the answer for more young couples than ever before, and as a result the children involved must face growing up with a parent absent. A six or seven year old in such circumstances may come to believe that his situation is abnormal and that he is inferior to his classmates. This may create an emotional attitude which works against the normal learning process. A teacher properly prepared can counter this tendency be reassuring the pupil as to his acceptability and thereby enhance his receptivity to instruction. This annotated bibliography lists materials that provide an introduction to the problem, and insights into ways the young child may rise above his or her situation. Section I provides a systematic arrangement of 81 education reports for Bureau of Indian Affairs educators. The curriculum bulletins are a collection of instructional monographs that provide descriptive analysis of curricula material in Indian Education. These cover such areas as social studies, art, ecology, safety, early childhood education, and language arts. Arranged alphabetically by author or subject, the third section lists 131 books for children and 941 for adolescents and adults. Included in the fourth section are 145 entries categorized by subject--academic achievement, culture/acculturation, mental health, language, tests and evaluation, and general Indian education. Abstract

This guide describes the development of a nonsexist early childhood curriculum designed to make teachers and parents more aware of the sexism existing in society and reflected in our schools. The guide is divided into six chapters: Chapter 1 presents a brief history of the Non-Sexist Child Development Project; Chapter 2 examines some of the basic premises in psychological theory and in teacher training courses concerning children and their development. Chapter 3 evaluates five learning environments in a preschool classroom (housekeeping area, cooking, blocks, outdoor play, and workbench/shop), and suggests guidelines for eliminating rigid sex-role stereotyping in these areas. Chapter 4 outlines four nonsexist curriculum units (Families, Jobs People Do, The Human Body, and Homemaking), and Chapter 5 lists nonsexist early childhood materials that are either commercially produced or hand-made. The last chapter reviews some of the efforts made by the Women's Alliance to engage parents in discussion of the effects of sexism on both boys and girls. An annotated bibliography of nonsexist picture books and a bibliography of nonsexist readings are included. (CS)
