Introduction Studies evaluating effects of gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) on weight and body-mass-index (BMI) in girls with idiopathic central precocious puberty (iCPP) include short-term effects. The aim of this study is to investigate changes in BMI during and 2 years after completion of GnRHa to determine the factors that may impact BMI in girls with iCPP. Methods Medical files of 138 girls who completed GnRHa were evaluated. All patients had weight and height measurements at the beginning and end of treatment, and 111 patients had anthropometric measurements 2 years after the completion of treatment. Results In the beginning, 82 (59.4%) had normal weight (NW), 42 (30.4%) were overweight (OW), and 14 (10.2%) were obese (OB). Analysis of BMI-standard deviation score (SDS) in the whole group showed an overall increase during GnRHa treatment (0.92 ± 0.74 vs. 1.20 ± 0.51, p < 0.001). Changes in BMI-SDS (ΔBMI-SDS) during GnRHa differed between NW and OW/OB (0.45 ± 0.31 vs. 0.03 ± 0.20, p < 0.001). BMI-SDSs of both groups returned to baseline scores (or initial levels) 2 years after the completion of treatment. Two factors affecting ΔBMI-SDS in multiple linear regression analyses were baseline BMI and Δheight-SDS, both correlated negatively with ΔBMI-SDS. Conclusions The present study is one of the studies evaluating BMI change over a long period of time in girls with CPP. Although BMI-SDS increased during GnRHa in NW girls, it was reversible in follow-up after treatment. However, BMI-SDS did not change during and in follow-up in OW/OB girls. Conserving BMI-SDS in OW/OB girls may be related to the fact that weight management programs were recommended for these patients. Dietary recommendations should be provided for children with NW who undergo GnRHa, as is the case for OW patients.

BACKGROUND: Mammographic breast density (MBD) is a strong risk factor and an intermediate phenotype for breast cancer, yet there are limited studies on how environmental pollutants are associated with MBD. OBJECTIVE: We investigated associations of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) levels with measures of MBD and evaluated if early life factors modified any associations. METHODS: Metabolon performed metabolomics analysis using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography/tandem accurate mass spectrometry in fasting blood from 705 premenopausal women completing their annual screening mammogram in St. Louis, Missouri. We calculated least square means (LSM) of mammographic volumetric percent density (VPD), dense volume (DV), and nondense volume (NDV) by quartiles (Q) of PFOS, PFOA, and PFHxS from multivariable linear regression modeling overall and stratified by recruitment period, race, age at menarche, and body shape at age 10. Models were adjusted for age, age at menarche, body fat percentage, race, family history of breast cancer, oral contraceptive use, alcohol consumption, parity/age at first birth, and body shape at age 10. RESULTS: PFOS, PFOA, and PFHxS were not significantly associated with VPD or NDV. PFHxS was significantly positively associated with DV (Q1=67.64 cm³, Q2=69.91 cm³, Q3=69.06 cm³, Q4=75.79 cm³; 푝-trend=0.03). PFOS was positively associated with DV (Q1=65.45 cm³, Q2=70.74 cm³, Q3=73.31 cm³, Q4=73.52 cm³; 푝-trend=0.06) with DV being 8.1%, 12%, and 12.3% higher in Q2, Q3, and Q4 compared to Q1. Among women who were underweight/normal weight at age 10, PFOS was positively associated with VPD (Q1=9.02%, Q2=9.11%, Q3=9.48%, Q4=9.92%; 푝-trend=0.04) while there was an inverse association among women who were overweight/obese at age 10 (Q1=7.46%, Q2=6.94%, Q3=6.78%, Q4=5.47%; 푝-trend=0.005) (푝-interaction=0.04). DISCUSSION: We report novel associations of PFHxS and PFOS with DV in premenopausal women. PFOS, PFOA, and PFHxS were not associated with VPD and NDV. In addition, body shape at age 10 may modify the associations of PFOS with MBD. Further studies are needed to validate our findings and to evaluate the associations of other per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), as well as mixtures of PFAS, with MBD. Excess body weight constitutes one of the major health challenges for societies and healthcare systems worldwide. Besides the type of diet, calorie intake and the lack of physical exercise, recent data have highlighted a possible association between endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), such as bisphenol A, phthalates and their analogs, and obesity. EDCs represent a heterogeneous group of chemicals that may influence the hormonal regulation of body mass and adipose tissue morphology. Based on the available data from mechanistic, animal and epidemiological studies including meta-analyses, the weight of evidence points towards the contribution of EDCs to the development of obesity, associated disorders and obesity-related adipose tissue dysfunction by (1) impacting adipogenesis; (2) modulating epigenetic pathways during development, enhancing susceptibility to obesity; (3) influencing neuroendocrine signals responsible for appetite and satiety; (4) promoting a proinflammatory milieu in adipose tissue and inducing a state of chronic subclinical inflammation; (5) dysregulating gut microbiome and immune homeostasis; and (6) inducing dysfunction in thermogenic adipose tissue. Critical periods of exposure to obesogenic EDCs are the prenatal, neonatal, pubertal and reproductive periods. Interestingly, EDCs even at low doses may promote epigenetic transgenerational inheritance of adult obesity in subsequent generations. The aim of this review is to summarize the available evidence on the role of obesogenic EDCs, specifically BPA and phthalate plasticizers, in the development of obesity, taking into account in vitro, animal and epidemiologic studies; discuss mechanisms linking EDCs to obesity; analyze the effects of EDCs on obesity in critical chronic periods of exposure; and present interesting perspectives, challenges and preventive measures in this research area. The age at first calving (AFC) has a huge impact on profitability in the dairy industry. It can be used as an indicator of fertility and productivity and it is also considered as an essential factor to ascertain the overall production performance of the animal. There are large variations in AFC in herd to herd, breed to breed and also country to country. This may be due to various factors that affect directly or indirectly on AFC; out of many factors, nutrition, body weight, environments, managements and genetics factors play a major role into attainment of puberty, sexual maturity and AFC. The current review covers various aspects of the seasonal influence of AFC on certain genetic variations and subsequent effect of these genetic variations in reproductive performances of the Murrah buffaloes. Objective: Nocturnal enuresis (NE), daytime urinary incontinence (DUI), and fecal incontinence (FI) are common disorders in childhood and are frequently accompanied by comorbid psychiatric disorders. Despite a high association between urinary and fecal incontinence with psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders, research on comorbidity between incontinence and anorexia nervosa (AN) remains scarce. Yet, it is well known that somatic consequences of AN include metabolic and gastrointestinal disorders. The study sought to assess the prevalence of incontinence and constipation in children and adolescents with AN and to examine associations of these two symptoms with body weight at admission and with BMI changes during inpatient treatment. Methods: Data collected between 2015 and 2017 by a multicenter German web‐based registry for AN were analyzed. Three hundred and forty‐eight patients with AN (96.3% female, mean age = 15.1 ± 1.8 years) were assessed regarding AN subtype, psychiatric comorbidity, body weight, incontinence, and constipation. Results: Overall, 27.6% of patients had constipation, 1.8% had NE and 1.8% DUI. Prevalence of constipation did not significantly differ between AN subtypes. Constipation did not lead to any significant differences in weight/BMI changes during inpatient treatment. Discussion: This is the largest study of incontinence and constipation in patients with AN, so far. Our results indicate that constipation is highly prevalent in adolescent patients with AN and reflects a clinically relevant condition. Despite, patients with AN do not have an increased prevalence of incontinence compared with the general population. Future studies should include medical examinations like ultrasound and physical examination of the lower abdomen to evaluate the severity of constipation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Longitudinal data regarding random luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations in patients with idiopathic central precocious puberty (ICPP) during treatment are limited. Therefore, we sought to evaluate random LH and estradiol concentrations during monthly leuprolide injection and their associations with pubertal progression and final adult height (FAH) in girls with ICPP. Methods: Medical records of 27 girls with ICPP who had attained FAH were reviewed. Patients' height, weight, Tanner stage, growth rate (GR), bone age, random LH measured by both immunoradiometric and immunochemiluminescent methods, follicular-stimulating hormone (FSH) and estradiol levels were monitored until FAH. Results: Treatment was started at a mean (±standard deviation) age of 8.1±0.6 years with mean duration of 3.9±0.2 years. At six months of follow-up, random LH (p=0.048), FSH (p<0.001) and estradiol (p=0.023) concentrations were decreased compared with baseline. Thereafter, random LHs were well suppressed. GRs gradually decreased to prepubertal norm by month 12. Seventeen patients (63%) exhibited pubertal LH concentrations at least once during treatment visits. Furthermore, 43 of a total 116 (37%) LH measurements were found elevated. However, those patients with elevated random LH did not show signs of pubertal progression. After treatment, mean FAH was greater than predicted adult height (p<0.0001) and target height (p=0.03). At no time points of treatment did random LH, FSH and estradiol correlate with GRs or FAH. Conclusion: Elevated random LH is commonly found in ICPP girls during monthly leuprolide treatment. However, these elevations were not associated with clinical progression of puberty or decreased FAH, suggesting that it is not a reliable method for CPP monitoring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRHa) are widely used in the treatment of central precocious puberty (CPP). There is concern that GnRHa treatment, whose positive effects on the adult height are known, may cause weight gain and body mass index (BMI) increase. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of the GnRHa treatment on BMI and height in female patients with CPP. Materials and Methods: Ninety-two patients diagnosed with idiopathic CPP and 22 patients diagnosed with organic CPP, who received GnRHa treatment were included in the study. Data taken on the treatment start date, 6th month, 1st and 2nd year for height, weight, BMI and bone age were obtained retrospectively from the file records. Results: BMI standard deviation score (SDS) increased during the treatment period in all the patients. In the second year of GnRHa treatment, BMI SDS was higher in the organic CPP, compared to the idiopathic CPP (0.66±0.84 and 1.35±0.72, p=0.007). In both groups, at the beginning of GnRHa treatment, the BMI SDS increase was higher in those patients with normal weight compared to those who were overweight/obese. In both groups, the prevalence of obesity was higher than the reference population at the beginning of treatment. An increase was determined in the height SDS and predicted adult height in both groups according to bone age. Conclusion: In patients with CPP, the prevalence of obesity was higher in the first application compared to the reference population. In CPP, BMI SDS increased with GnRHa treatment. The weight of the patients at the beginning of the treatment affected the weight and BMI change with GnRHa treatment. Those patients with organic CPP were more prone to weight gain and BMI increase. Objective: To compare the serum inhibin B, anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and leptin concentrations in girls with idiopathic central precocious puberty (CPP) to their concomitant characteristics and evaluate the capacity of each of these hormones to predict the age at first menstruation in those who were untreated and who completed their puberty. Methods: This single-center study included 94 girls selected from a cohort of 493 girls seen between 1981 and 2012 and diagnosed with idiopathic CPP for whom a remaining serum sample collected at the initial evaluation was available. Of these 25 were untreated and completed their puberty. Results- correlations at initial evaluation: In the whole cohort the inhibin B concentration displayed significant positive correlations with the age at the onset of puberty and at initial evaluation; bone age; breast Tanner stage; serum basal estradiol, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and AMH concentrations, LH peak and LH/FSH peak ratio. The AMH concentration displayed a significant positive correlation with serum estradiol and a negative correlation with basal FSH concentration. The leptin concentration displayed significant positive correlations with the age at initial evaluation, bone age, and body mass index and a negative correlation with the FSH peak. Results- prediction of age at first menstruation: In 25 untreated girls, the inhibin B concentration was negatively correlated with the age at first menstruation (r = -0.61, p = 0.001) and the time between the onset of puberty and first menstruation (r = -0.59, p = 0.002). Inhibin B concentrations <30 pg/mL were associated with a time between the onset of puberty and first menstruation ≥3 years in 14/15 patients with a sensitivity of 0.67 and a specificity of 0.75. The age at first menstruation was estimated using a formula: min (11.15–0.510 LH/FSH peak ratio, 11.57–0.025 inhibin B)available at: . Conclusion: We established formulas based on the serum inhibin B concentrations and LH/FSH peak ratio at the initial evaluation, alone or in combination, to predict the age at first menstruation in girls with CPP. Objective: Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRHa) are the treatment of choice for central precocious puberty (CPP) and have been widely used for several decades. We determined the effect of GnRHa treatment on the auxological outcomes of girls with idiopathic CPP. Methods: This study included 84 girls treated monthly with depot leuprolide acetate who had reached adult height. We compared their final adult height (FAH) with their initial predicted adult height (PAH). We performed a multivariate analysis of the factors associated with FAH on all girls diagnosed with CPP. Results: We performed the final evaluations at a mean age of 14.1 ± 0.8 years after a mean treatment duration of 2.98 ± 0.73 years (ranging from 1.5–4.8 years). Menarche had occurred at 12.6 ± 0.6 years of age, which was 16.5 ± 6.1 months after discontinuation of GnRHa therapy. Mean FAH was 160.1 ± 5.0 cm, which was significantly higher than the initial PAH (156.1 ± 5.7 cm; P < 0.001). To investigate whether growth outcomes were influenced by the age at initial treatment, we divided all patients into two groups, those treated between 6 and 8 years (n = 23) and those treated after 8 years (n = 61); no significant differences were observed in FAH between the two groups. FAH was significantly and positively correlated with the height standard deviation score (SDS) at the end of treatment and with the target height, whereas the difference between bone age and chronological age at the start and end of treatment was negatively correlated with FAH. Conclusion: FAH was significantly higher than the initial PAH in girls with CPP who were treated with GnRHa. Also, GnRHa treatment was still effective even after 8 years of age in girls with CPP. Background: In girls with Idiopathic Central Precocious Puberty (ICPP) concern has been raised by the potential impact of GnRH-analogues (GnRHa) treatment on body weight. We evaluated the effect of GnRHa on Body Mass Index (BMI) in girls with ICPP according to weight status at diagnosis. Methods: One hundred seventeen ICPP girls were divided according to pretreatment weight status in: normal weight (NW), overweight (OW) and obese (OB). BMI at one and two years of treatment was assessed. BMI-SDS of 60 patients who reached adult height (AH) was compared to that of 33 ICPP untreated girls. Results: NW girls significantly increased their baseline BMI-SDS at 1 and 2 years of treatment. OW girls only had a significant increment at one year of treatment while OB girls showed no BMI-SDS change. Patients evaluated at AH (at least four years after GnRHa withdrawal) showed a significant decrease on BMI compared to baseline and a significantly lower BMI than the untreated group. Conclusion: In ICPP girls the BMI increase under GnRHa was inversely related to the pretreatment weight status. In the long term follow-up, no detrimental effect of GnRHa on body weight was observed. GnRH analogues (GnRHa) are the treatment of choice for central precocious puberty (CPP), with the main objective to recover the height potential compromised by the premature fusion of growth cartilages. The aim of this review was to analyze longterm effects of GnRHa on height, body weight, reproductive function, and bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with CPP, as well as the potential predictors of outcome. Because randomized controlled trials on the effectiveness and long-term outcomes of treatment are not available, only qualified conclusions about the efficacy of interventions can be drawn. GnRHa treatment appears to improve adult height in girls with CPP, especially if diagnosed before the age of 6, whereas a real benefit in terms of adult height is still controversial in patients with the onset of puberty between 6 and 8 years of age. No height benefit was shown in patients treated after 8 years. Gonadal function is promptly restored in girls after cessation of treatment, and reproductive potential appears normal in young adulthood. Data are conflicting on the long-term risk of polycystic ovarian syndrome in both treated and untreated women. Fat mass is increased at the start of treatment but normalizes thereafter, and GnRHa itself does not seem to have any long-term effect on BMI. Similarly, analogue treatment does not appear to have a negative impact on BMD. Owing to the paucity of data available, no conclusions can be drawn on the repercussions of CPP and/or its treatment on the timing of menopause and on the health of the offspring. Aims/hypothesis: Aim of this study was to test Wilkin's 'accelerator hypothesis': whether excessive weight gain accelerates the onset of type 1 diabetes. Subjects and methods: Anthropometric birth data of 1117 children who developed diabetes between 1988 and April 2013 were compared with those of a sex, age, and gestational age matched, contemporary regional control group (n=54 344). Cases were divided into three manifestation groups (G1:0-4.9 yr, G2:5-9.9 yr, and G3: 10-20 yr). Furthermore, growth data of 540 children with diabetes were compared with controls (n=134 249) in pre-, peri-, and post-onset intervals (interval: 1-6). Also, correlation of age at onset and body mass index (BMI) standard deviation score (SDS) at this point of time were examined. Results: Cases had significantly higher SDSs for birth weight when compared with controls (boys: p=0.007, girls: p=0.002). Children with early manifestation had the highest mean of birth weight SDS (G1>G2>G3), (p=0.22, adjusted r² =0.001). BMI SDS trend curves of cases are slightly higher compared with those of the healthy controls. This was only significant in years after diagnosis (interval 6, p<0.000). Cases did not show excessive weight gain in any of the examined intervals before the onset of diagnosis (interval 1-3). One year after diagnosis, we found an inverse correlation between age at diagnosis and BMI SDS at diabetes manifestation. Objective: We studied the effect of gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues (GnRHa) on weight gain as a possible side effect. Methods: We analyzed longitudinally changes in BMI-SDS in 92 children [median age 8.0 years (IQR 7.1-8.9), 88% females, mean BMI-SDS 0.69 ± 1.30] with idiopathic central precocious puberty or early puberty treated with GnRHa. Furthermore, 25 overweight children with GnRHa were compared to 25 overweight children without GnRHa matched by age, gender, degree of overweight, and pubertal stage. Results: The matched overweight children without GnRHa demonstrated a significant increase in their BMI-SDS in the course of 1 year (+0.18 ± 0.22). Normal-weight children treated with GnRHa demonstrated a significant increase in BMI-SDS in the course of 1 year (+0.32 ± 0.66) in contrast to overweight children treated with GnRHa who showed a stable BMI-SDS (-0.02 ± 0.27). This significant difference in changes in BMI-SDS between normal-weight and overweight children treated with GnRHa was also observed at the end of GnRHa treatment and 6 months later (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Change in weight status differed between overweight and normal-weight children during GnRHa treatment. Based on the importance of early-life events in breast cancer risk, we have investigated the effects of high-fat diets on maturation, mammary gland development, and its susceptibility to transformation. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a lowfat (LF), high corn oil (HCO), or high extra-virgin olive oil (HOO) diet from weaning and gavaged with 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene. Body weight and mass increased in the HCO group compared to the LF group. The vaginal opening was advanced in both high-fat groups, especially in the HCO group. This HCO group also had increased body weight around puberty, more corpora lutea at post-puberty, and tended to have higher kisspeptin levels in the hypothalamus. Both high-fat diets induced subtle modifications in the morphology of the mammary gland, with no changes on β-casein or hormone receptors expression in the gland. The HCO diet had a clearly stimulating effect of carcinogenesis, inducing the earliest appearance of tumors and the highest tumor incidence and yield, whereas the HOO diet seemed to have a weak enhancing effect, increasing tumor yield. Our data suggest a strong influence of the HCO diet in sexual maturation and mammary cancer risk, while rats fed the HOO diet were more similar to the controls. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the past decade, the percentage of children who are obese has rapidly increased. As weight has been shown to correlate strongly with the size of various organs, we have observed that obese children have larger kidneys than their normal-weight counterparts. This study sought to quantify this observation by establishing the normal limits of renal length for this population. We examined 204 healthy patients seen for benign hematuria between January 2000 and May 2008. Both right and left kidney lengths significantly correlated with age, height, weight, body mass index and body surface area in our obese patients ( n = 59). Height was also found to be a significant predictor of kidney length, in the obese group, by multiple linear regression analysis and was used to create renal length nomograms for the obese pediatric population ( P < 0.01). According to this analysis, obese patients had significantly larger kidneys than those of normal-weight patients ( P < 0.01). By defining the normal limits of renal length for this group, unnecessary evaluation for nephromegaly will be avoided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the analysis of three studies from Central Europe on the impact of weight status on the onset and parameters of puberty. The studies, two coming from Germany and the other from Switzerland, took into consideration body weight, height, peak height velocity and pubertal stages. Children were grouped into three groups based on body mass index (BMI), lean, overweight and normal. The analysis concluded that the impact of overweight on the acceleration of puberty is more noticeable in boys than in girls.

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analog therapy relies primarily on the ability of these compounds to bind to and modulate GnRH-receptor activity. GnRH analogs have been used in pediatric patients where endogenous gonadotropin release is undesirable or potentially harmful, such as in: (i) patients with central precocious puberty (CPP); (ii) healthy short children where pubertal delay would provide an opportunity to supplement pre-pubertal linear growth; and (iii) children with malignancies and other disorders where treatment requires the use of gonadotoxic compounds. In the first two groups of patients, GnRH agonists may be used alone or in conjunction with somatropin (growth hormone [GH]) to prevent early skeletal maturation and increase the subsequent adult height, while in the latter case, GnRH agonists are used alone or in conjunction with GnRH antagonists in an attempt to preserve gonadal function.In children and adolescents with CPP, timely use of GnRH agonists alone can result in an adult height within the genetic potential of the individual (target height); however, minimal height is gained when GnRH agonist therapy is commenced after a marked advancement of skeletal age. This provides the rationale for combined therapy with GnRH agonists and somatropin in such patients, and studies have shown improved growth with this approach compared with GnRH agonists alone. Combination therapy with GnRH agonists and somatropin has also been shown to increase adult heights to a greater extent than GnRH agonists alone in pediatric patients with concomitant CPP and GH deficiency, those with idiopathic short stature, and those born small for gestational age; however, such combination therapy has shown no increased benefit over somatropin alone in pediatric patients with GH deficiency. Limited results in children and adolescents with congenital adrenal hyperplasia and chronic primary hypothyroidism have also shown increased growth rates, while no growth benefit was seen in pediatric renal transplant recipients.GnRH analogs also have potential as gonadoprotective agents; studies of GnRH agonists used alone and in combination with GnRH antagonists in women undergoing cytotoxic therapy have shown increased preservation of reproductive potential in patients who were receiving GnRH analog therapy versus those who were not.The adverse effects of GnRH analogs mainly consist of menopausal-like complaints. Increases in bodyweight and body mass index in children receiving GnRH agonist therapy have been shown; however, these increases do not persist after discontinuation of therapy. Adult bone mineral density and fertility are also not adversely affected by childhood GnRH agonist therapy.GnRH analog therapy appears to be both well tolerated and effective in pediatric patients, as it allows the preservation or improvement of adult height, and shows no longstanding negative effects on body composition, bone density, reproductive function, or endocrine physiology. Background: The timing of puberty is highly sensitive to environmental factors, including endocrine disruptors. Among them, bisphenol A (BPA) has been previously analyzed as potential modifier of puberty. Yet, disparate results have been reported, with BPA advancing, delaying, or being neutral in its effects on puberty onset. Likewise, mechanistic analyses addressing the central and peripheral actions/targets of BPA at puberty remain incomplete and conflictive. Objective: We aimed to provide a comprehensive characterization of the impact of early BPA exposures, especially at low, real-life doses, on the postnatal development of hypothalamic Kiss1/NKB neurons, and its functional consequences on female pubertal maturation. Methods: Pregnant CD1 female mice were orally administered BPA at 5, 10, or 40 [micro]g/kg body weight (BW)/d from gestational day 11 to postnatal day 8 (PND8). Vaginal opening, as an external marker of puberty onset, was monitored daily from PND19 to PND30 in the female offspring. Blood and brain samples were collected at PND12, 15, 18, 21, and 30 for measuring circulating levels of gonadotropins and analyzing the hypothalamic expression of Kiss1/kisspeptin and NKB. Results: Perinatal exposure to BPA, in a range of doses largely below the no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL; 5 mg/kg BW/d, according to the FDA), was associated with pubertal differences in the female progeny compared with those exposed to vehicle alone, with an earlier age of vaginal opening but consistently lower levels of circulating luteinizing hormone. Mice treated with BPA exhibited a persistent, but divergent, impairment of Kiss1 neuronal maturation, with more kisspeptin cells in the rostral (RP3V) hypothalamus but consistently fewer kisspeptin neurons in the arcuate nucleus (ARC). Detailed quantitative analysis of the ARC population, essential for pubertal development, revealed that mice treated with BPA had persistently lower Kiss1 expression during (pre)pubertal maturation, which was associated with lower Tac2 (encoding NKB) levels, even at low doses (5 [micro]g/kg BW/d), in the range of the tolerable daily intake (TDI), recently updated by the European Food Safety Authority.
