The aim of this study is to assess the bone mineral density (BMD) and T -score reference values in a population from 18 to 95 years old in Lombardy region, Italy. This study also investigates the association between BMD values and body mass index (BMI) divided by gender and age. The evaluation of BMD was analyzed by T -score and BMD in each site, femur, and column. A total of 10,503 patients (9,627 females and 876 males, 65.04±12.18 years) have been enrolled in this study. The women hip femur reference values associated with a situation of osteopenia highlighted in-line with the class of age of 45 to 55 years were: mean values: −1.3132 T -score; 95% confidence interval (CI): −1.3600 to −1.2664 and of osteoporosis from the class of age 85 to 95 years, mean values: −2.6591 T -score, 95% CI: −2.7703 to −2.5479. The men hip femur reference values associated with a situation of osteopenia highlighted in-line with the class of age of 45 to 55 years were: mean values: 1.2986 T -score; 95% CI: −1.5454 to −1.0518. A positive association between BMI and the two sites of BMD was recorded (p >.05). This study provides an Italian overview of national and regional reference values about the BMD and T -score values divided by age and gender as reference values for clinicians for a correct assessment and monitoring. Background: This study aimed to analyse the impact of des-acyl and acyl ghrelin (AG) on a wide range of muscular and metabolic markers and in order to discover the possible relationships and interactions of des-acylated ghrelin (DAG) on eating disorders. Materials & Methods: A total of 88 subjects (64 women and 24 men, with a mean age of 43 years and a mean body mass index (BMI) of 30.20 ± 3.27 kg/m2) were enrolled in the cross-sectional study. Results: The findings showed that for each unit of increase of free fat mass index (FFMI), levels of DAG decreased by −41.11 pg/mL (p < 0.05). Moreover, similar associations with DAG were found for insulin (β = −30.67; p < 0.001), leptin (β = −0.64; p < 0.05), body weight (β = −14.36; p < 0.001), and free fat mass (FFM) (β = −30.67; p < 0.001). In addition, associations were found between DAG and resting energy expenditure (REE) (β = −0.84; p = 0.05) and the binge eating scale (BES) in which a unit increase of the BES score Q3 (depression) correlated with a decrease of DAG levels (β = −9.98; p = 0.08). Further, a unit increase of AG/DAG ratio correspond with an increase in body weight (β = 12.20; p < 0.05), BMI (β = 4.70; p < 0.05) and fat mass (β = 7.30; p < 0.05). However, the AG/DAG ratio was not associated with FFMI (β = 2.61; p = 0.165) and FFML/BMI (β = −0,064; p = 0.625). Background: A study has been performed in overweight and obese subjects to assess the effects of adiposity and inflammation indicators on dysmetabolic biomarkers via red cell distribution width (RDW) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV), taking into account pro-antioxidant balance. Methods: Data from 166 overweight subjects were analyzed by a path analysis model using structural equation modelling (SEM) to evaluate the direct and indirect pathway effects of adiposity, measured by body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), and inflammation status, measured by pro-antioxidant balance [reactive oxygen species (ROS)], lag-time and slope and C-reactive protein (CRP) values on dysmetabolic biomarkers, via RDW and MCV. Results: BMI was strongly linked to CRP and ROS levels. Moreover, there was a significant negative decrease of MCV (1.546 femtoliters) linked to BMI indirectly via high CRP levels. Furthermore, WC affected RDW, indicating a possible mediatory role for RDW in relation to the relationship between WC and homeostatic model assessment (HOMA), insulin and high density lipoprotein (HDL), respectively. This was evident by the elevated HOMA and insulin levels and the decreased levels of HDL. Finally, ROS-related markers did not affect directly RDW and MCV. Conclusion: The reported outcomes suggest that RDW might play a mediatory role in the relationship between WC and the dysmetabolic outcomes in overweight and obese individuals. CRP seems to modulate the linkage between BMI and MCV. This study provides the backbone structure for future scenarios and lays the foundation for further research on the role of RDW and MCV as suitable biomarkers for the assessment of cardiovascular disease (HDL-cholesterol), inflammatory bowels and insulin resistance. The glycemic index (GI) was developed to classify foods according to their ability to increase postprandial blood glucose. The literature reports that the GI of rice varieties ranges from 48 to 93. All studies evaluate Indica rice but none evaluates the GI of Japonica rice. Furthermore, no studies have been conducted to assess the relationship between amylose content and GI in Japonica rice. The aim of this study is to evaluate the GI and amylose content of 25 Japonica rice genotypes. This study is based on the standard method for GI determination according to the international standard ISO 26642; it includes two men and eight women (mean age 28.3 ± 3.7, Body Mass Index – BMI – 21.4 ± 2.6). Five rice genotypes show low GI (Selenio, Argo, Enr18215, Enr18328, Enr18433), 10 medium GI (Carnaroli, CL12, CL388, CRLB1, Elio, Enr18126, Iarim, S. Andrea, Tiberio, and Valente), and 10 high GI (Arborio, Lince, Duilio, Castelmochi, Padano, Puma, Baldo, CL18, CL35, CL71). A negative association is also observed between medium GI and amylose (r = −0.528). As the amylose content increases, the mean GI decreases. Rice is generally considered a high-glycemic index (GI) food, but numerous studies show that parboiling reduces the GI. There are no studies on GI of Indica and Japonica subspecies parboiled rice grown in Italy. The aim of this study was (1) to evaluate GI in different varieties of parboiled rice (ribe, white and brown long B, basmati, black, red, roma, and arborio); (2) to evaluate GI of same variety of rice subjected to different rice parboiling processes (parboiled ribe and parboiled long B with two different methods: flora and conventional method); (3) to evaluate GI of two by-products of parboiled rice: white and brown rice cake. Participants were 10 healthy individuals (20–30 years old, body mass index 18.5–25 kg/m2). Proximate composition and GI were determined by using standard methods. All parboiled rice assessed is low-GI (brown long B 48.1 ± 6.4 by flora method, ribe 52.0 ± 1.8 GI by flora method, black rice 52.3 ± 7.6 by flora method, long B 52.4 ± 3.9 by flora method, long B 53.4 ± 5.1 by conventional method, ribe 54.4 ± 4.3 GI by conventional method, Roma 54.4 ± 7.9 GI by flora method, and arborio 54.4 ± 7.9 GI by flora method), except red rice that is of medium-GI (56.1 ± 7.0 GI), and both classic and brown cakes that are high-GI (respectively, 83.3 ± 8.9 GI and 102.2 ± 5.5 GI).
