Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome is the most common endocrine disorder and most common cause of ovarian dysfunction in women of reproductive age group. Clinical manifestations of PCOS range from mild signs of hyperandrogenism to the classic Stein-Leventhal syndrome. Aims: To correlate between ultrasonographic findings, clinical features, and hormonal profile in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome. Materials and Methods: The present study was a Cross-sectional study. This study was conducted from January 2021 to February 2023 at the Department of Radiodiagnosis, Katuri Medical College and Hospital, Katuri Nagar, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, India. Result: FSH levels were low to normal in 85.3% of the patients with >12 follicles, 86.8% of the patients with 2-9 mm follicular size, 87.3% of the patients with >10cc ovarian volume, and 94% of the patients with EMT>10mm. The mean FSH level is lower in patients with 2-9mm follicles compared to patients with >9mm follicular size. Conclusion: Thus, this study concludes that ultrasonographic ovarian features like follicular number and ovarian volume show significant positive correlations with LH level as well as positive correlations with LH/FSH ratio. Background: Globally by 2030, 38% of the world's population would be overweight, and another 20% would be obese. This has led to rising concerns regarding how swiftly and substantially the world is moving towards this epidemic of "globesity". India too is facing an increased burden of overweight and obese population. The changing dietary patterns are significantly associated with the increasing prevalence of overweight/obesity and related complications, especially among women. Hence, the present study aims to observe the spatial patterns of overweight or obesity among women in reproductive age group in India and factors associated with it. Methods: The study analyzed data from a cross-sectional nationwide household survey, i.e. National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4), 2015–16. The primary outcome variable of this study was overweight/obesity among reproductive-age women, which was measured through the body mass index (BMI) of the women. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the data. Additionally, for spatial analysis in terms of overweight/obesity among women in India, univariate and bivariate Moran's I index measurements were used along with the usage of spatial regression models. Results: The value of spatial-autocorrelation for overweight or obese was 0.64, which depicts the moderately high prevalence of the overweight/obesity coverage over districts of India. The overall prevalence overweight/obesity among women in India is around 25% and higher proportion of women from urban areas (37.8%), and non-poor (33.4%) economic group reported to be overweight or obese. From spatial lag model, the lag coefficient was found to be 0.28, implying that a change in the prevalence of overweight/obesity among women in a certain district may statistically lag the prevalence of overweight/obesity by 28% in the neighbouring districts. There were significantly high clustering of overweight/obese women and non-poor wealth quintiles in 132 districts, mainly from states of Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Additionally, there was high-high clustering of overweight/obese women and those who ever had caesarean in 82 districts, mostly from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Conclusion: The spatial patterns on the prevalence of overweight and obesity in India show that the women belonging to the southern states' districts are more overweight or obese in comparison to other states. The determinants like older age, higher education, urban residence, higher economic status are the key factors contributing to the prevalence of overweight or obesity among women in the reproductive age group. The study concludes and recommends an urgent need of interventions catering to urban women belonging to higher socio-economic status, to reduce the risks of health consequences due to overweight and obesity. Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrinopathy affecting women of reproductive age group at a global level. According to many community-based studies, the prevalence of PCOS in India ranges from 3.7 to 22.5% due to the country's enormous population. Upon ultrasound, it shows multiple cysts arranged in a bead of necklace-like appearance causing irregular menstrual cycles and infertility in most cases. It is manifested with abnormally raised testosterone and insulin levels and increased luteinizing hormone (LH)-to-follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) ratio. Phenotypically, it is presented as obesity, hirsutism, acne and male pattern baldness, which impacts the self-esteem of young girls leading to depression and compromised quality of life. Aim: Numerous potential genes have been shown to contribute to PCOS, and the genetic linkage of PCOS has been investigated in many studies. In this study we are looking into the candidate genes, the variants, and other responsible factors behind the genesis of PCOS. This will help in better understanding of its pathogenesis and, as a result, deciphering the mechanism by proper medication. Method of the study: We comprehensively searched for publications including PCOS-relevant keywords in different areas in five different electronic databases: PubMed, Google Scholars, Elsevier, Springer Link and Science Direct up to March 2023 focusing on the new ones. We excluded non-English articles, conference papers and studies that were overlapping. Chosen articles were carefully read and further articles that were retrieved from their references were also reviewed so as to make the search complete with the inclusion criterion. Result: This review summarizes PCOS as an polygenic and a multifactorial complex disease in which a vast array of genetic and environmental factors are involved. Genes that affect steroidogenesis (ovarian and adrenal), gonadotropin action and regulation, insulin action and secretion, body mass index and chronic inflammation are directly or indirectly associated with PCOS. Conclusion: In this study, research of the genetic propensity to PCOS was made, though not in-depth. With the acquired knowledge of array of genes involved, targeted efforts can be made for the potential therapeutic management of the PCOS patients via the novel discovered routes. Moreover, understanding more about PCOS would be beneficial in prevention of the associated metabolic disorders, life-threatening morbidities, restoring fertility and raising the self-esteem of the young women. Introduction: Leptin is an adipocyte derived hormone encoded by ob gene which serves as a relay link between metabolic signals and brain that regulate the hypothalamic pituitary ovarian axis. Leptin is related with obesity, which is a most important cause of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) in women of reproductive age group. Aim: To evaluate leptin concentration and to analyse its correlation with Body Mass Index (BMI) and insulin resistance in PCOS. Materials and Methods: This case-control study was conducted from December 2018 to December 2019 at Department of Biochemistry in collaboration with Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur, Odisha, India. A total of 60 PCOS subjects, aged between 15-30 years (30 obese PCOS and 30 lean PCOS) and 30 age-matched, normal ovulatory healthy controls were included in the study. Parameters such as serum leptin, fasting plasma insulin, Homeostatic Model Assessment-Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), Fasting Plasma Glucose (PPG), Postprandial Plasma Glucose (PPPG) were estimated using commercial kits. One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test was used for data analysis and the Pearson's correlation method was used to find the correlation between the parameters. Results: The mean age of women in all the three PCOS groups was found to be 22.4±3.13 years. The BMI of obese PCOS patients (31.9±4.7 kg/m²) and lean PCOS patients (21.4±2.2 kg/m²) were higher than that of healthy controls (20.7±1.8 kg/m²) which was statistically significant (p-value <0.001). The serum leptin in obese PCOS were significantly higher (28.0±17.8 ng/mL) than lean PCOS (5.8±2.2 ng/mL) and fasting plasma insulin in lean PCOS were (10.9±2.4 µIU/mL) significantly lower than obese PCOS (30.2±14.8 µIU/mL). Mean serum leptin levels had significant positive correlation with BMI in lean and obese PCOS and insulin resistance in obese PCOS. Conclusion: In the present study, high leptin concentration was observed in PCOS patients and there was positive correlation of leptin with BMI in both lean and obese PCOS groups and leptin was positively correlated with insulin resistance in obese PCOS. The aim of this study is to examine diet diversity, predictors associated with it, and its associations with anemia among non-pregnant women of reproductive age in rural India. Baseline data from the Reductions in Anemia through Normative Innovations (RANI) project were used and included 980 non-pregnant women aged 15–49 years from Odisha, India. The Food and Agriculture Organization's Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women (MDD-W) was used to assess diet diversity. Anemia was determined by hemoglobin level and categorized as normal (hemoglobin ≥ 12 g/dL), mild (11 ≤ hemoglobin <12 g/dL) and moderate/severe (hemoglobin < 11 g/dL). Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine factors associated with diet diversity, and multinomial logistic regression for associations between diet diversity and anemia. Forty-four percent of women were classified as having a diverse diet (MDD-W ≥5). Women with higher education level, belonging to a scheduled caste (vs. tribe), and higher body mass index had higher odds of a diversified diet (p <.05 for all). A more diverse diet was associated with 30% of lower odds of mild anemia (odds ratio = 0.7, 95% confidence interval: 0.5–0.98, p =.035), however, no statistically significant associations were found for moderate/severe anemia. Objective: The current study explored changes in trend of anaemia and BMI among currently pregnant nullipara adolescent women against socio-economic determinants in India from 2005 through 2015. The association between anaemia in currently pregnant nullipara adolescent women v. currently pregnant nullipara older women of reproductive age was also explored.Design: We used the 2005 and the 2015 nationally representative Indian Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). The outcomes of interest, anaemia and BMI, were measured based on the DHS methodology following WHO standards and indicators. Place of residence, educational attainment and wealth quintiles were used as determinants in the analysis.Setting: India.Participants: In total, 696 adolescent girls from the India 2005 DHS and 3041 adolescent girls from the India 2015 DHS.Results: The 10-year transition from 2005 to 2015 showed differences between the least and most wealthy sections of society, with heaviest gains in anaemia reduction over time among the latter (from 50·0 to < 40·0 %). The odds of anaemia were significantly higher among the adolescent population when compared with adult women both in 2005 and in 2015 (OR = 1·2).Conclusions: Despite an overall improvement in the prevalence of both BMI < 18·5 and anaemia among adolescents nullipara in India, the adjusted risk of anaemia in the latter category was still significantly higher as compared with their adult counterparts. Background: Uncontrolled hypertension and tobacco use are two major public health issues that have implications for reproductive outcomes. This paper examines the association between tobacco-use status and uncontrolled hypertension among prime childbearing age (20-35) women in India.Methods: We used the India National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4) 2015-2016 to obtain data on hypertension status and tobacco use for 356,853 women aged 20-35. We estimated multivariate logistic regressions to obtain the adjusted odds ratio for tobacco users in favor of having uncontrolled hypertension. We examined the adjusted odds at different wealth index quintiles, at different educational attainment, and at different level of nutritional status measured by body mass index.Results: We found that the odds of having uncontrolled hypertension for the tobacco user women in India was 1.1 (95% CI: 1.01-1.19) times that of tobacco non-users at prime childbearing age. The odds were higher for tobacco-users at the poorest quintile (1.27, 95% CI: 1.14-1.42) and with no education (1.22, 95% CI: 1.10-1.34). The odds were also higher for tobacco-users who were overweight (1.88, 95% CI: 1.57-2.29) or obese (2.82, 95% CI: 1.88-4.24).Conclusions: Our findings highlight the disproportionate dual risk of uncontrolled hypertension and tobacco use among lower-income women of prime childbearing age, identifying an opportunity for coordinated tobacco control and hypertension prevention initiatives to ensure better health of reproductive-age women in India. Objectives: Clinical biochemistry reference intervals (RIs) are essential benchmarks to interpret patient test results and make clinical decisions. In this study, data on healthy women collected in an ongoing ICMR-National task force study was used to establish normative ranges for common biochemical analytes. Methods: A total of 13,181 women of reproductive age (18-40 years) were recruited from different urban and rural regions of the country, of which 9,898 women who signed an informed consent were included. Among these, women having features of hyperandrogenism, menstrual cycle irregularities, and with comorbidities were excluded. RIs of 22 analytes were computed in remaining 938 women controls. The 95% of the reference distribution was estimated using 2.5th percentile and 97.5th percentile limits. Results: The mean ± SD of age and body mass index (BMI) of participants was 30.12 ± 6.32 years and 22.8 ± 3.36 kg/m2 respectively. The median and 2.5th -97.5th percentiles of liver function parameters, lipid parameters, glycaemic parameters, and renal parameters were computed. No significant difference in analytes were observed in relation to the area of residence, and age groups except in albumin (p = 0.03). The distributions for most of the parameters were consistent with the various reference interval studies conducted in India as well as other countries. Conclusion: This is the first study generating biochemical RIs data among a large representative sample of healthy reproductive age women recruited using a robust design across the country. Background: Maternal stature and body mass indices (BMI) of non-pregnant women (NPW) of child bearing age are relevant to maternal and offspring health. The objective was to compare anthropometric indices of NPW in four rural communities in low- to low-middle income countries (LMIC).Methods: Anthropometry and maternal characteristics/household wealth questionnaires were obtained for NPW enrolled in the Women First Preconception Maternal Nutrition Trial. Body mass index (BMI, kg/m2) was calculated. Z-scores were determined using WHO reference data.Results: A total of 7268 NPW participated in Equateur, DRC (n = 1741); Chimaltenango, Guatemala (n = 1695); North Karnataka, India (n = 1823); and Thatta, Sindh, Pakistan (n = 2009). Mean age was 23 y and mean parity 1.5. Median (P25-P75) height (cm) ranged from 145.5 (142.2-148.9) in Guatemala to 156.0 (152.0-160.0) in DRC. Median weight (kg) ranged from 44.7 (39.9-50.3) in India to 52.7 (46.9-59.8) in Guatemala. Median BMI ranged from 19.4 (17.6-21.9) in India to 24.9 (22.3-28.0) in Guatemala. Percent stunted (<-2SD height for age z-score) ranged from 13.9% in DRC to 80.5% in Guatemala; % underweight (BMI <18.5) ranged from 1.2% in Guatemala to 37.1% in India; % overweight/obese (OW, BMI ≥25.0) ranged from 5.7% in DRC to 49.3% in Guatemala. For all sites, indicators for higher SES and higher age were associated with BMI. Lower SES women were underweight more frequently and higher SES women were OW more frequently at all sites. Younger women tended to be underweight, while older women tended to be OW.Conclusions: Anthropometric data for NPW varied widely among low-income rural populations in four countries located on three different continents. Global comparisons of anthropometric measurements across sites using standard reference data serve to highlight major differences among populations of low-income rural NPW and assist in evaluating the rationale for and the design of optimal intervention trials.Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov # NCT01883193 (18 June 2013, retrospectively registered).
