Background: Adolescents' body composition is considered an important measure to evaluate health status. An examination of any of the segmental compartments by anthropometric indices is a more usable method than direct methods., Objectives: To propose a method based on the network approach for predicting segmental body composition components in adolescent boys and girls using anthropometric measurements., Methods: A dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) dataset in the south of Iran, including 476 adolescents (235 girls and 241 boys) with a range of 9-18 years, was obtained. Several anthropometric prediction models based on the network approach were fitted to the training dataset (TRD 80%) using bnlearn, an R add-in package. The best fitted models were applied to the validation dataset (VAD 20%) to assess the prediction accuracy., Results: Present equations consisting of age, weight, height, body mass index (BMI), and hip circumference accounted for 0.85 (P < 0.001) of the variability of DXA values in the corresponding age groups of boys. Similarly, reasonable estimates of DXA values could be obtained from age, weight, height, and BMI in girls over 13 years, and from age, weight, height, BMI, and waist circumference in girls under 13 years, respectively, of 0.77 and 0.83 (P < 0.001). Correlations between robust Gaussian Bayesian network (RGBN) predictions and DXA measurements were highly significant, averaging 0.87 for boys and 0.82 for girls (P < 0.001)., Conclusions: The results revealed that, based on the present study's predictive models, adolescents' body composition might be estimated by input anthropometric information. Peak bone mass is established during childhood. This study aimed to evaluate the associations of the components of overall body mass with areal bone mineral density Z-score in children. The findings of this study showed that children with greater overall body mass had higher aBMD Z-score., Purpose: Peak bone mass is established during childhood and adolescence. One of the important factors influencing predicted bone mass tracking in childhood and adolescence is alteration in the body composition during this growth period. This study aimed to evaluate the associations of the components of overall body mass with areal bone mineral density Z-score in children and adolescents., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 478 healthy Iranian children and adolescents (237 girls and 241 boys) who had DXA measures participated. We evaluated the linearity of associations using generalized additive models., Results: Children's mean age was14 years with a range of 9-18 years, and 49.6% were girls. We found an increase in aBMD Z-score with increasing overall body mass (r = 0.25, p < 0.001). We observed this association with fat-free mass and total fat mass up to the 60th (~30 Kg) and 75th percentile (~12.5 Kg) [0.051 (95% CI, 0.027-0.075) increase in aBMD Z-score per 1 Kg increase in fat-free mass and 0.079 (95% CI, 0.044-0.114) increase in aBMD Z-score per 1 Kg increase in the total fat mass]. The correlation between Z-score of overall body mass and its components with aBMD Z-score was strongly positive. (P value < 0.001 for all) CONCLUSION: The findings of this study showed that children with greater overall body mass had higher aBMD Z-score. In addition, this study adds to a growing literature, suggesting that the relationship between body composition and BMD may be influenced by the pattern of fat and fat-free mass distribution in population.

Background: Some 60-80% of the variability in bone mineral density (BMD) is determined by genetic factors. In the present study, we investigated the impact of the rs2302685 polymorphism of LRP6 on BMD and body composition in Iranian children., Methods: In total, 200 children (101 boys and 99 girls) were enrolled in the study. Body composition and BMD were computed using the Hologic DXA System (Hologic, Marlborough, MA, USA). The single nucleotide polymorphism of LRP6 rs2302685 (V1062I) was determined using a polymerase chain reaction/restriction fragment length polymorphism. A generalized linear model was performed to find the association between LRP6 polymorphisms, BMD and body composition in two adjusted models., Results: In model 1, a significant difference was found between LRP6 (rs2302685) polymorphism, trochanteric BMD (p = 0.007), intertrochanteric BMD (p = 0.007), total fat (p = 0.001), total fat (%) (p = 0.034), total lean mass (p = 0.031), total Lean + BMC (p = 0.036) and total mass (p = 0.001). In model 2, LRP6 (rs2302685) polymorphisms showed a significant effect on the trochanteric BMD (p = 0.005), intertrochanteric BMD (p = 0.005), total fat (p = 0.001), total fat (%) (p = 0.013) and total mass (p = 0.01). Total fat, total fat (%) and total body mass were higher in subjects with the CC genotype compared to the TT/CT genotype, whereas total lean mass and total Lean + BMC were higher in the TT/CT genotype., Conclusions: The present study shows that the LRP6 polymorphism may be associated with body composition and BMD in Iranian children., (© 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Failure to achieve optimal bone mass in childhood is the primary cause of decreased adult bone mineral density (BMD) and increased bone fragility in later life. Activating and inactivating LRP5 gene mutations has been associated with extreme bone-related phenotypes. Our aim was to investigate the role of LRP5 polymorphism on BMD, mineral biochemical parameters, and body composition in Iranian children. This cross-sectional study was performed on 9-18 years old children (125 boys, 137 girls). The serum level of calcium, phosphorous, alkaline phosphatase, and vitamin D parameters were checked. The body composition and BMD variables were measured by the Hologic system DXA. The rs566442 (V1119V) coding polymorphism in exon 15 of LRP5 was performed using PCR-RFLP method. Linear regression analysis, with adjustment for age, gender, body size parameters, and pubertal status was used to determine the association between LRP5 polymorphism (rs556442) and bone and body composition parameters. The allele frequency of the rs566442 gene was 35.5 % A and 63.9 % G. Our study revealed that LRP5 (rs556442) has not any significant influence on serum calcium, phosphorus, 25OHvitD, and serum alkaline phosphatase (P > 0.05). Total lean mass was greater in GG genotype (P = 0.028). Total body less head area (P = 0.044), spine BMD (P = 0.04), and total femoral BMC (P = 0.049) were lower in AG heterozygote genotype. This study show LRP5 polymorphism may associate with body composition and BMD in Iranian children. However, further investigations should be done to evaluate the role of other polymorphism.

Background: The prevalence of childhood obesity has risen greatly worldwide. However, assessment of obesity among children and adolescents is further complicated by the changes occurring in the body composition during the growth. The aim of this study is to create gender-specific percentile curves for total body fat percentage (TBFP), total body fat mass (TBFM), fat mass index (FMI), and fat free mass index (FFMI) in healthy Iranian children and adolescents., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 472 healthy Iranian children and adolescents (234 girls and 238 boys) aged 9-18 years old participated. TBFP and TBFM were measured by Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA). Weight, height, and waist circumference (WC), pubertal stage and level of physical activity were also recorded., Results: Mean TBFM, TBFP and FMI in girls were significantly more than boys (P < 0.001). The median TBFM in boys increased from 4.8 Kg to 7.5 Kg and in girls from 6.0 Kg to 15.6 Kg. The percentile curves of TBFP in boys were down sloping compared with that in girls (19% increase in girls and 21% decrease in boys from 9-18 years of age). We showed TBFP and FMI had a more complicated relationship with BMI depending on gender and level of BMI, but FFMI consistently increased with BMI in both genders. Also, we found that waist circumference -as a marker of metabolic syndrome-had the greatest correlation with FMI (P < 0.001) between DEXA measured parameters., Concslusion: This study presents normative data for body composition in healthy Iranian children and adolescents and would be useful in adiposity assessment. Our study showed that Iranian children and adolescents had lower total body fat in all age groups and percentiles in comparison with those reported from western children.

Background: Sarcopenia is a progressive disease with age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function. No study has investigated the association between healthy beverage index (HBI) and sarcopenia in older adults. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the association between HBI and sarcopenia in Iranian older adults. Methods: In the present case-control study, 80 sarcopenic and 80 non-sarcopenic participants matched in sex were included. Body composition was measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Handgrip strength (HGS), skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), and gait speed were utilized to confirm sarcopenia. Also, a food frequency questionnaire was used to evaluate food intake. HBI score was calculated based on ten sub-components of the total beverages. Moreover, logistic regression was applied to assess the association between HBI and sarcopenia. Results: In the crude model, we observed no significant association between HBI and the odds of sarcopenia. Still, after adjusting the confounders, the odds of developing sarcopenia decreased significantly in the second and last tertiles (T) (T2– odds ratio (OR) = 0.04, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.01–0.25 and T3– OR = 0.10, 95% CI: 0.01–0.60). Conclusions: Our findings indicated that HBI is inversely related to the chance of sarcopenia. Therefore, to reduce the odds of sarcopenia, it is recommended to consume healthy drinks such as fruit juices and milk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Aging and obesity are the two major global health concerns. Sarcopenia, an age-linked disease, wherein a progressive loss of muscle volume, muscle strength, and physical activity occurs. In this study we evaluated the association of TP53 rs1625895 polymorphism with the susceptibility to sarcopenic obesity in Iranian old-age subjects.Methods: Total of 176 old individuals (45 sarcopenic and 131 healthy) were recruited in this research and genotyped by PCR-RFLP. BMI, Skeletal Muscle Mass Index, body composition, Handgrip Strength, Gait Speed (GS), and biochemical parameters were measured. Chi-square test was done for genotypes and alleles frequency. Linear regression was applied to find the correlation between TP53 rs1625895 polymorphism, and biochemical and anthropometric parameters. The correlation between TP53 rs1625895 and the risk of sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity was investigated by logistic regression.Results: G allele was significantly higher in sarcopenic obesity group [P = 0.037, OR (CI 95%) = 1.9 (1.03-3.5)] compared to A allele. BMI (P = 0.049) and LDL (P = 0.04) were significantly differed between genotypes when GG was compared to AA/AG genotype. The results revealed when GG genotype compared to AA/AG genotype in adjusted model for age, the risk of sarcopenic obesity [P value = 0.011, OR (CI 95%); 2.72 (1.25-5.91)] increased. Similarly, GG/AG genotype increased the risk of sarcopenic obesity [P value = 0.028, OR (CI 95%); 2.43 (1.10-5.36)] in adjusted model for age compared to AA genotype.Conclusions: We suggested that TP53 rs1625895 polymorphism may increase the risk of sarcopenic obesity in Iranian population. Objectives: To evaluate prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and its associated factors in southern Iranian children.Design: Cross-sectional study. Anthropometric and pubertal characteristics were assessed by a trained physician. Physical activity and sun exposure were evaluated using standard questionnaires. Body composition measurements were performed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Serum Ca, P alkaline phosphatase and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) were assessed in all children. Statistical analysis was done using the statistical software package IBM SPSS Statistics 18·0.Subjects: Iranian children (n 477) aged 9-18 years.Setting: Fars Province, Iran, 2011.Results: Of the children, 81·3 % were 25(OH)D deficient. There was no significant difference in 25(OH)D concentration between boys and girls (P=0·3). 25(OH)D concentration was associated with BMI (r=-0·1, P=0·02), pubertal status (r=-0·08, P=0·04) and sun exposure (r=0·10, P=0·04). Fat mass index was associated with 25(OH)D concentration (r=-0·13, P=0·03), but not lean mass index (P=0·86). In multiple regression analysis with adjustment for confounding factors, age and puberty were found to be independently associated with 25(OH)D concentration (P=0·008 and P=0·006); there was a significant correlation between exercise and 25(OH)D concentration after adjustment for either BMI (P=0·01) or fat mass index (P=0·02).Conclusions: 25(OH)D deficiency is highly prevalent among children in the south of Iran. It is related to insufficient sun exposure, low physical activity, advancing age and pubertal stage. Background:Wnt signalling/LRP5is involved in adipogenesis by down-regulating adipogenic transcription factors. Therefore polymorphisms in components of this pathway may lead to metabolic disorders. Aim:This study tested the impact ofLRP5polymorphism on lipid profile in Iranian children. Methods:The study population was comprised of 9–18 year old children (125 boys, 137 girls). Total cholesterol (TC), High Density Lipoprotein (HDL), Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL), Non-HDL cholesterol and Triglyceride (TG) levels were checked. Body composition was measured by the Hologic system DXA. PCR/restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) was done forLRP5(rs556442) genotyping. Multiple association analyses for TG level and genotype frequencies were assessed using logistic regression analysis, with adjustment for age, sex, BMI and puberty. Results:The results revealed thatLRP5(rs556442) had a significant influence on TG levels in unadjusted analysis and when adjusted for interacting factors. Higher TG levels were observed in AA/AG genotype of rs566442 in comparison to GG genotype (OR = 2.028, 95% CI = 0.997–4.127,p =  0.049). To evaluate the efficacy of daily consumption of fortified yogurt with beta-Hydroxy beta-Methyl Butyrate (HMB) and vitamins D and C on measures of sarcopenia, inflammation, and quality of life in sarcopenic older adults. In this 12-week randomized double-blind controlled trial, participants received either yogurt fortified with 3 g HMB, 1000 IU vitamin D, and 500 mg vitamin C in the intervention group (n = 33) or plain yogurt in the control group (n = 33). A total of 66 older adults with sarcopenia recruited from the community in Shiraz, Iran. Body composition, muscle strength, and functionality were measured using Dual-energy-X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA), hydraulic handgrip dynamometer, and usual gait speed, respectively. Serum concentrations of vitamin D, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), malondialdehyde, and insulin were measured at baseline and after 12 weeks. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was also evaluated using SF-12 questionnaire. Consumption of fortified yogurt was associated with improvement in handgrip strength [mean change (95% confidence interval) 4.36 (3.35–5.37) vs. 0.97 (−0.04 to 1.99)] and gait speed [0.10 (0.07–0.13) vs. 0.01 (0.00–0.04)] in the intervention group compared with the control group (P <.001). In addition, the results revealed a significant increase in vitamin D and IGF-1 levels in the intervention group (P <.001). The nutritional intervention significantly prevented any increase in the serum concentration of hs-CRP compared with the control group (P =.033). The results also showed a more significant decrease in the malondialdehyde level in the intervention group compared with the control (P =.008). Moreover, there were significant differences between the 2 groups regarding physical aspects of HRQoL (P =.035). A novel dairy product fortified with HMB, vitamin D, and vitamin C not only could enhance muscle strength and functionality, but also modulate anabolic and inflammatory conditions as well as quality of life.
