Abstract

The article presents a study which examines if body mass index (BMI) percentiles are sufficient in identifying obesity in children. It concludes that BMI percentiles may not be a perfect indicator of adiposity in young children. It advises that the public health practitioners should use multiple methods to detect overweight in children.

Abstract

The article focuses on a study that examines the correlation among the methods used to determine obesity and overweight in five- to eight-year-old children including percentage body fat (PBF) measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC). It states that weight was measured on an electronic scale while PBF was calculated via BIA. It shows that BMI, WC, and waist-height ratio (WHTR) are significantly correlated than to PBF measured by BIA.
