In this paper we aim to investigate how family members, and young sons and daughters in particular, do family and actively take part in doing family through space and the body. By viewing family relations from a culturalist perspective, we aim to shed light on how these embodied family practices form, operate and change, from a spatial perspective. In more depth, we are interested in exploring how family boundaries change depending on the spatial proximity or distance among family members, configurations in which the (im)materiality of body and embodied family practices are significant. The paper is based on two empirical studies regarding young Italians - one on a group still living in the family home with their parent(s) and the other on a group of Italians living abroad. Our analysis, based on biographical narrative interviews with 40 young Italian men and women (aged 22 to 30), shows that while family boundaries are continuously being actively reshaped by (real and virtual) spatial interactions among family members, proximity and distance work quite similarly when it comes to doing family, especially considering the implications of, and reactions to, the parental gaze (Morgan 2011b). Based on phenomenology, this paper outlines possibilities for organizational practices towards sustainability development. To elucidate these practices, the paper outlines Merleau-Ponty's philosophy of the body, as well as his ontology of 'Flesh' as elemental 'carnality' and formative medium. Furthermore, Flesh will be interpreted as processed through sensual and reflexive doubling as a reversibility and chiasm of the sentient and the sensible. This understanding opens for the path to a post-dualistic, transformative approach towards processes of 'wild being' and 'be(com)ing' in organizations and sustainability. The military dictatorship in Chile (1973–1989) promoted an ideology of the individual body, dismantling all social and collective matrices. The various artistic expressions discussed in the following text can be seen as practices of situated memory, that link the violence of that period to the exercise of a necessary intersubjectivity between different spaces of intervention and bodies. In doing this, and by taking as a starting point collective and the notion of alienated space, the aim is to reconstitute a conscious corporeality of memory and collectivity. This paper seeks to revise interpretations of these performative and photographic exercises and to ask how meaning can be produced without subjecting memory to a process of reification or immobilisation. This paper addresses the "invisible body in shanshui paintings" by redefining the correlation between shanshui and the human body in the Daoist context. I argue that the human body is not invisible in shanshui painting—it is ever-present through the agency of the shanshui. The correlation will be unpacked in two aspects. Firstly, shanshui is ontologically connected and shares a "corporeal" affinity with the bodies of human beings. Secondly and more importantly, with the development of inner alchemy (neidan 內丹), shanshui and the human body are identified as representative of one another. Shanshui becomes the body through the lens of the unique concept of neijing 內景 (inner landscape). As the powerful and redemptive mediation between human beings and the Dao, shanshui reveals not only the inner body but also the mechanism of inner energies. Furthermore, it offers a solution to solve the Daoist anxiety over the body's physical limitations by breaking down the constant confrontation and opposition between the "I" and the cosmos and reactivating one's primordial dependency on nature. Khushwant Singh is a well-known Indian English writer with a distinct voice in creative writing and one of the most dynamic authors in the Indian English Literature canon. He pointed aggressively at diverse social, political, administrative, and religious conflicts through his writings. He described the affairs of the common people in a sardonic style that causes readers to grin at their actions. He has the enormous potential to draw these problems out. The writer Singh's fictional works are obnoxious, charming, nostalgic, and bitter at first glance, but after a deep reading into the text and context of this writer, the reader will realise that the author Singh was never hesitant to highlight society's foolishness, idiocy, and unorthodox habits, as well as bureaucratic blunders of various dimensions. The purpose of this study is to examine the grotesque in this situation. This paper looks at "Kusum" and "The Great Difference" by Khushwant Singh. It looks at the bizarre characters, themes, settings, and symbols that are associated with the grotesque and its related aspects. In his work written in 1924 Les rois thaumaturges, Marc Bloch highlighted an important issue that contributes to our understanding of power and royalty in the Middle Ages. Scholars have been deepening research in the field since then, looking for the reasons behind the "royal touch" and for an eventual quest for legitimacy for those kings who strive to see their authority recognized. Should we reduce the touch to a mere strategy to gain consensus? Or should we look for deeper reasons by "questioning" the kings and their hypothetical belief in touch, along with the trust in their healing powers? It must be acknowledged that subjects were loyal to the body of the king first, and the body was the very center of the political realm throughout the Middle Ages. In this paper we are going to try to look for a different path analyzing Bloch's findings and proposing research questions that should be taken into consideration in both studies on royalty in the Middle Ages, and on the origins of the legitimization of power. This paper aims to offer an understanding of the body as an archive while analysing poems written by queer and non-binary poet and performer Danez Smith. Seen as a conflicting field for power and control disputes, the archive can be read in different ways and this paper approaches it in order to theorise what a queer archival practice may signal when elements such as gender, sexuality and desire are interrogated in Smith’s poems. Taking into consideration theoretical contributions from Celia Pedrosa et al. (2018), Julietta Singh (2018), David Lapoujade (2017), Ann Cvetkovich (2003) and others, it is concluded that Smith’s poems display a complex negotiation of feeling and the world, allowing new meanings to erupt from the archive.

Yoga is increasing in popularity. As a holistic practice, it is being applied and researched as a healing modality for physical ailments, assisting with mental health issues, and addressing traumatic symptoms. However, little is known about how social workers understand and include Yoga in their personal lives or professional practice. As part of a larger narrative study, practitioners in an Australian regional centre were asked: "What, if any, impact do embodied practices like Yoga have on your experience and your clients' experience?" This paper explores the stories told by three of the practitioners interviewed both individually and in focus groups. The dominant themes that emerged highlight that: a personal Yoga practice can be varied; the impact it has on professional outcomes is difficult to quantify; there is a lack of theoretical discussion about the body and embodied experience in social work; the challenges associated with introducing Yoga into social work practice are complex. Embodied practices such as Yoga provide social workers opportunities to increase self-awareness, their capacity to engage with clients and self-care. Theoretical understandings of the body and embodiment need to be better articulated in social work if embodied practices like Yoga are to be included in the professional conversation. The paper is a contemplative explication of the walking process. What are the essential features of walking, and how do those who stroll around the city experience walking? We used contemplative research methods and explication of the phenomenon of walking. The research is based on self-observation and self-reporting about the thoughts, body feelings, and emotions that emerge during walks. In the paper, we describe the features of the phenomenon of walking. First, we investigate the minding process generated by walking in the city. Then, we elaborate on the pathic dimension of walking (especially the mood), body feelings (lived body), lived relations, and reflections on life and self that are a consequence of walking.

No sooner than after eighty years since the moment of the original publication of Djuna Barnes's Nightwood was Polish literary market enriched by a translation of one of the most peculiar novels of the Euro-American modernism. Marcin Szuster's translation under Polish title Ostępy nocy has already managed to earn much praise and also some prizes and open a first Polish discussion about the work of the eccentric American writer. The paper's focus is to analyze the Polish translation of Nightwood with a special interest in Barnes's style as it becomes a central character in the novel which connects, according to feminist critics (K. Kaivola, S. Benstock), to its emancipatory potential. In my paper I follow a claim that the complex style of this prose writing is a (conscious) manifestation of a woman's voice (as an affect), behind which one can discover a body - one that experiences and is experienced (J. Taylor). The body, both a structural and a rhetorical category in feminist criticism, in Barnes's prose can be seen as an element organizing time and space - therefore, ambiguity of her terms and complexity of style are forming a true translation challenge. Marcin Szuster as a translator needs to follow Barnes's "distinctive point of view," which is a "feminine" one and distanced by the length of gender, experience and time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper looks at the concept of the grotesque body in Sarah Kane's Phaedra's Love and Cleansed and uses Mikhail Bakhtin's theory of the grotesque body as a framework for understanding examples of the grotesque in these works. After a brief introduction of the term, the paper introduces some of the key theoretical propositions regarding the grotesque in the work of Mikhail Bakhtin, which helps us gain a more meaningful insight into the phenomenon in relation to Kane's works. Then we discuss bodily themes, the grotesque body with its characteristic traits and the grotesque representations of the body in Kane's Phaedra's Love and Cleansed with a focus on some of the relevant elements of the grotesque, as propagated by Mikhail Bakhtin. We argue that in spite of the prevalence of violence and brutality in the modern life and diminishing of the regenerative sense of human existence as discussed by Bakhtin, Kane depicts grotesque-bodily images throughout her plays and thus has renewed the tradition of the grotesque. The paper examines between democracy and a utopia of everydayness. The paper refers to the democratic system in Poland through the prism of everyday life and it shows the sources of the rise of populism in the feeling of losing control over our own lives. Therefore, the paper investigates the relationships between everyday life and politics and the complicated connections between everydayness and modernity. The next section is devoted to the emergence of the utopia of everydayness in Herbert Marcuse's psychoanalytic thought and its appropriation in the student movements of sixties. Finally, the categories of microphysics of emancipation and somapower are introduced and it is shown that these notions can be useful in the construction of the utopia of everydayness which would support the democratic system. Mobility has become a central topic of contemporary social research with the mobility turn initiated in the 2000s. In order to grasp the complexity of the global order, its authors have attempted to decenter the importance of human subjectivity and to envisage a "sociology beyond societies". The present paper considers this interpretive context to demonstrate the contemporary relevance of Alfred Schutz's theory of action, and to propose a notion of mobility intrinsically linked to the performance of subjectivity. By revisiting the distinction between action as a thing produced and as an ongoing process, the notion of mobility is detailed in relation to movement in space and to the subjective flow of time. The specific type of action Schutz calls "locomotion" in his later work enables us to understand how action involves bodily operations in configuring a common space of sociality and communication. I conclude by going beyond the explanation of action in terms of its starting point and end point, and by assessing how action unfolds through the experiential life of the subject, with its new meanings and unexpected changes. Television comedy has rarely been studied from the perspective of class in a post-socialist context. This paper analyses representations of class, body, gender and nationality in the three most popular sitcoms of the last two decades in Slovenia, focusing especially on their role in working-class discourse and its transformation. Ambivalent representations of working-class characters are highlighted and put in the context of the egalitarian ideology which prevails in Slovenian popular culture. Drawing on the difference between workplace and domestic sitcoms, the paper concludes that the appearance and performance of working-class characters may be interpreted as a reworking of class boundaries in the post-socialist context. Sitcoms are thus considered as contributing to a process of re-demarcating class boundaries, yet with a subtle mockery at the level of their bodies rather than by explicit vilification of the lower classes in general. This paper explores how a cohort of pre-service Health and Physical Education (HPE) teachers from an Australian university describe and construct their understandings of health and the body. Given that the courses that these undergraduates take in their degree programme present different perspectives on health and the body, a relevant question is to what extent these perspectives adequately equip these future HPE teachers to successfully teach the recently released Australian HPE curriculum. The participants in this study were 14 pre-service teachers, 11 females and 3 males, aged between 18 and 26 at the time of the first interview. The data used for this paper were taken from a larger study and were generated through interviews, the analysis of two undergraduate course profiles and an analysis of the new National HPE curriculum. Results reveal that there are some dominant discourses in health-related courses that may have a significant impact on these students. The purpose of HPE, the role of the HPE teacher and the idea of the HPE teacher as role model are also discussed. The results suggest that pre-service teachers face several challenges and dissonances between what they learn during their undergraduate programme and what the Australian HPE curriculum expects them to teach. How pre-service HPE teachers think about and relate to health and the body is important in terms of how they think about their professional practice and the influence they may have on their future pupils. Nearly all of us would accept that at least some of our thoughts – desires, beliefs, and intentions, for example – can be causally responsible for movements in our bodies. Starting in antiquity, and especially since Descartes, philosophers have deployed this claim as the pivotal premise in an increasingly popular line of argument against dualism. A Dirty Business. This paper explores the relationship between dirt, gender, and hierarchies in labour contexts based on the example of early modern maids. Using the instruments of historical discourse analysis, it probes how the understanding of dirt in the late Middle Ages around 1500 differs from that of around 1700. Besides gender and labour, one reference point of the search for traces in normative sources is the body as an intersection of diverse categories and an incorporator of dirt. Two opposing movements accompany the shift of dirt from an external stain to an internal essence. While normative theological or lordly sources pushed maids from the interior of households to the exterior of cities, dirt slowly inscribed itself into the maids’ bodies and helped establish a hierarchical labour regime that viewed female labour as inferior because it was performed by women. Focusing on the steps that literally and metaphorically guide us today, this paper takes walking as its main subject and establishes it theoretically as a form of subversive bodily movement. If contemporary sociological and humanistic treatments of walking show that this everyday practice has not been completely overlooked, the gap opens at the level of thinking it in relation to the dominant social order and its spatial and temporal manifestations. As we argue, in the hegemonic neoliberal context, walking has the potential to manifest itself as a practice that breaks with the existing logic of both space and time. Through the methodological application of the cat's cradle game, we develop a theoretical argumentation to ground walking as a bodily practice that requires different space and different time. Emanating from the body, it opens to the space and time of enjoyment – a heterotopia erected in relation to the current neoliberal hegemony, but in the manner of a crack, a path that carries the projection of a possible alternative. This paper offers a close reading of the intergenerational trilogy by Ashapurna Debi, one of the first-canonized women-novelists of post-independence India: Pratham Pratisruti (The First Promise), 1965, Subarnalata, 1967, and Bakul Katha (Bakul's Story), 1974. Reconstituting a history of almost two centuries and countering the colonial/postcolonial grand narratives, these novels act as a saga of Bengali Hindu lower and middle-class women's plight under and resistance against a patriarchal social order operating at the most intimate levels of domestic relationships. Ashapurna Debi's treatment of the intricacies of gender inequality and a woman's response to the violence inflicted on her body in one of the centres of South-Asian modernity and its vicinity intervenes crucially in the twentieth century feminist discourse. At the same time, her narrative closely follows a promise, accompanied by a sense of commitment and responsibility, handed over from mother to daughter to granddaughter to rise as selfconscious individual subjects by overcoming personal and social reservations and taboos. This paper, therefore, examines the micro-physics of power exercised in gender relations as evident in the concerned trilogy. It focuses on the performing bodies of women amidst all sorts of physical and psychological oppressions and how they provide a critique of the broader aspects of social change, like reform and nationalist movements. While considering the intersections between the poststructuralist gender studies in the West--developed as a sustained critique of the mechanism of modern power being proposed by Michel Foucault among others--and Ashapurna Debi's observations, this paper theoretically emphasizes how the factors of contingency in Bengali women's lives posit new insights into what, after Judith Butler, may be called "gender trouble" as they undo many of the morally ordered gender roles. This study examines what happens when a defined normal, in the sociocultural context of western civilization, does not align with women's diverse experiences of their bodies throughout their reproductive lifespan. The study explores women's frequent negative affects surrounding their reproductive bodies driven by western culture's societal definition of normal. Using modified interview questions from Emily Martin's 1987 study: The Woman in the Body, which help examine women's perception of achieving womanhood through their corporeal experiences including menarche, menstruation, menopause, and pregnancy, this study strives to explore questions that women have about their bodies during their reproductive lifespan: How does my experience of womanhood compare to others? Is my body doing its job? What is my perception of my body? The answers to these questions, explored in this study, revolve around women's most fundamental corporeal processes and investigate the observable disconnect in how a woman feels about the physiology of her body, and what she thinks more psychologically about her body. In addition to updating Martin's study, this project also addresses gaps in existing literature such as considering more than one corporeal event within a women's lifespan. A qualitative research approach was used with a semi-structured interview style. Twenty women ages 40 to 86 years were recruited from the Spirituality and Healing Conference hosted in Rochester, Minnesota, USA, in 2018. The interviews included approximately fifty questions during a 30-minute individual session. Interviews were then coded for emergent and parallel themes as it related to Martin's original research. Using quotes and stories from the women interviewed, this study explores what happens when women don't feel normal, and how feelings of abnormality lead to frequent denial of individual experience, even when those experiences are impactful. Although some existing theories of femininity help illuminate some of the subjects' experiences, they do not encompass this behavior fully when investigated. To better describe the self-alienation exhibited by these women, this paper posits that the behavior might best be termed self-objectification. Following justification for self-objectification theory, the paper highlights interviewees central proposal for change--that both men and women participate in communication-based education on the reproductive lifespan. This paper concerns Plato's characterization of the body as the soul's tool. I take perception as an example of the body's usefulness. I explore the Timaeus' view that perception provides us with models of orderliness. Then, I argue that perception of confusing sensible objects is necessary for our cognitive development too. The paper attempts to reach at an understanding of the concepts of 'science' and 'scientism' as constructed and ideological concepts and how they contribute in shaping our commonsensical understanding of the body in terms of its relation to social identity and role. While attempting to expose modern science as a "constructed" discipline and ideology operating in tandem with the dominant hegemonic structures, the paper also attempts to briefly throw light on the limits of the current trend of interdisciplinary approaches and the concepts of "agency" and "critique" as well. Using a post-structuralist approach the paper therefore attempts not only to open-up the closed structures of both "science" and "scientism" but also to reach at an understanding how it goes on to affect questions of representation, reality, social and the body itself.
