In an effort to address both current and future needs in the PC Card marketplace, the PCMCIA has together with JEIDA introduced a new worldwide version of the PC Card [...]

Several computers that have PCMCIA slots either have been or will be introduced. These products include the HP 95LX hand-held computer, the Zeos Pocket PC palmtop computer and the AST PowerExec 3/25SL notebook computer.

The PCMCIA has approved standards for PC Cards, but the cards are not yet completely interchangeable. PC Cards are expected to be compatible with all PCMCIA slots by 1994 or 1995.

The PCMCIA has ratified Release I for Type I cards and and Release II for Type II cards, and it is getting ready to approve standards for Type III cards. The Type I cards were only 3.3 millimeters thick, but the Type III cards will be 10.5 millimeters thick.

The PCMCIA was created in 1989 to establish standards for PC Cards, or small expansion devices. Some 350 companies, including major firms such as AT and T and IBM, are members of the organization.
