Ecological forecasting of forest productivity involves integrating observations into a process-based model and propagating the dominant components of uncertainty to generate probability distributions for future states and fluxes. Here, we develop a forecast for the biomass change in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) forests of the southeastern United States and evaluate the relative contribution of different forms of uncertainty to the total forecast uncertainty. Specifically, we assimilated observations of carbon and flux stocks and fluxes from sites across the region, including global change experiments, into a forest ecosystem model to calibrate the parameter distributions and estimate the process uncertainty (i.e., model structure uncertainty revealed in the residuals of the calibration). Using this calibration, we forecasted the change in biomass within each 12-digit Hydrologic (H12) unit across the native range of loblolly pine between 2010 and 2055 under the Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 scenario. Averaged across the region, productivity is predicted to increase by a mean of 31% between 2010 and 2055 with an average forecast 95% quantile interval of ±15 percentage units. The largest increases were predicted in cooler locations, corresponding to the largest projected changes in temperature. The forecasted mean change varied considerably among the H12 units (3-80% productivity increase), but only units in the warmest and driest extents of the loblolly pine range had forecast distributions with probabilities of a decline in productivity that exceeded 5%. By isolating the individual components of the forecast uncertainty, we found that ecosystem model process uncertainty made the largest individual contribution. Ecosystem model parameter and climate model uncertainty had similar contributions to the overall forecast uncertainty, but with differing spatial patterns across the study region. The probabilistic framework developed here could be modified to include additional sources of uncertainty, including changes due to fire, insects, and pests: processes that would result in lower productivity changes than forecasted here. Overall, this study presents an ecological forecast at the ecosystem management scale so that land managers can explicitly account for uncertainty in decision analysis. Understanding the ecological dynamics of forest ecosystems, particularly the influence of forest age structure on soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) content, is crucial for effective forest management and conservation. This study aimed to investigate the nutrient storage and ecological stoichiometry across different-aged stands of Chinese fir forests. Soil samples were collected from various depths (0–15 cm, 15–30 cm, and 30–45 cm) across four age groups of Chinese fir forests (8-year-old, 12-year-old, 20-year-old, and 25-year-old) in the Forest Farm, Pingjiang County, China. Soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) were measured, and their stoichiometries were calculated. The results showed that both individual tree biomass and stand biomass, along with SOC, TN, and TP content, increased with stand age, highlighting the significant importance of stand age on biomass production and nutrient accumulation in forests. Specifically, soil C and P contents significantly increased as the forest aged, while variation in N content was relatively minor. Soil C/N and C/P ratios exhibited variation corresponding to forest age, suggesting alterations in the ecological stoichiometry characteristics of the forests over time. These findings are crucial for understanding the dynamics of ecosystem functioning and nutrient cycling within Chinese fir forests and provide a solid scientific basis for the effective management and conservation of these vital forest ecosystems. Many land surface models (LSMs) assume a steady‐state assumption (SS) for forest growth, leading to an overestimation of biomass in young forests. Parameters inversion under SS will potentially result in biased carbon fluxes and stocks in a transient simulation. Incorporating age‐dependent biomass into LSMs can simulate real disequilibrium states, enabling the model to simulate forest growth from planting to its current age, and improving the biased post‐calibration parameters. In this study, we developed a stepwise optimization framework that first calibrates "fast" light‐controlled CO2 fluxes (gross primary productivity, GPP), then leaf area index (LAI), and finally "slow" growth‐controlled biomass using the Global LAnd Surface Satellite (GLASS) GPP and LAI products, and age‐dependent biomass curves for the 25 forests. To reduce the computation time, we used a machine learning‐based model to surrogate the complex integrated biosphere simulator LSM during calibration. Our calibrated model led to an error reduction in GPP, LAI, and biomass by 28.5%, 35.3% and 74.6%, respectively. When compared with net biome productivity (NBP) using no‐age‐calibrated parameters, our age‐calibrated parameters increased NBP by an average of 50 gC m−2 yr−1 across all forests, especially in the boreal needleleaf evergreen forests, the NBP increased by 118 gC m−2 yr−1 on average, increasing the estimate of the carbon sink in young forests. Our work highlights the importance of including forest age in LSMs, and provides a novel framework for better calibrating LSMs using constraints from multiple satellite products at a global scale. Plain Language Summary: Physical and biological process‐based models always overestimate the biomass of young forests, with an assumption that they usually hold maximum carbon stocks like old‐growth stands. Such an assumption can lead to biased carbon fluxes and stocks in further simulation. Considering stand age in LSMs improves their ability to simulate real forest growth. In this study, we develop a stepwise method to account for stand age effects in model simulations by assimilating remotely sensed information on vegetation productivity, leaf area, biomass, and age. The relative importance of abiotic and biotic factors in shaping forest biomass stocks and fluxes remains a controversial issue. Here, using data gathered from 39 1 ha plots located in flooded and terra firme mature tropical lowland forests of the Amazon and Orinoquia regions of Colombia, we evaluated the importance of climate, soil fertility, and flooding, as well as tree taxonomic/phylogenetic diversity and forest structural properties, in determining the aboveground biomass stocks (AGB; Mg ha−1) and aboveground woody productivity (AWP; Mg ha−1 year−1). Using information‐theoretic multimodel inference and variance partitioning we found that forest structural features such as the number of trees with diameter at breast height ≥ 70 cm, and wood density, are the main drivers of variation in AGB. However, taxonomic diversity also contributes to AGB because it is associated with more large trees in these forests. In contrast, the key drivers of AWP in these forests were soil P and Mg concentrations, with no significant effects of diversity indices. These findings emphasize the need to include major soil cations other than N and P (e.g. Mg) in experimental studies to improve our understanding about the extent to which soil fertility can modulate increases in forest AWP due to climate change. Terra firme forests had higher AGB stocks than flooded forests, but both had similar AWP; and we found similar results for the drivers of AGB and AWP between flooded and terra firme forests. Our results provide limited evidence for strong effects of plant diversity on AGB or AWP. Therefore, we call for caution on generalizations of nature‐based initiatives aiming to preserve diversity based on maximizing carbon stocks and productivity, due to the complex nature of the processes controlling carbon accumulation and carbon fluxes in tropical forests. Wood density (WD) is a key functional trait related to ecological strategies and ecosystem carbon dynamics. Despite its importance, there is a considerable lack of information on WD in tropical Andean forests, particularly regarding its relationship with forest succession and ecosystem carbon cycling. Here, we quantified WD in 86 upper Andean tree and shrub species in central Colombia, with the aim of determining how WD changes with forest succession and how it is related to productivity. We hypothesized that WD will increase with succession because early successional forests will be colonized by acquisitive species, which typically have low WD, while the shaded understory of older forests should favor higher WD. We measured WD in 481 individuals from 27 shrub and 59 tree species, and quantified aboveground biomass (AGB), canopy height, net primary production (NPP) and species composition and abundance in 14, 400-m², permanent plots. Mean WD was 0.513 ± 0.114 (g/cm³), with a range between 0.068 and 0.718 (g/cm³). Shrubs had, on average, higher WD (0.552 ± 0.095 g/cm³) than trees (0.488 ± 0.104 g/cm³). Community weighted mean WD (CWMwd) decreased with succession (measured as mean canopy height, AGB, and basal area); CWMwd also decreased with aboveground NPP and stem growth. In contrast, the percentage of NPP attributed to litter and the percent of shrubs in plots increased with CWMwd. Thus, our hypothesis was not supported because early successional forests had higher CWMwd than late successional forests. This was related to a high proportion of shrubs (with high WD) early in succession, which could be a consequence of: 1) a low seed availability of trees due to intense land use in the landscape and/or 2) harsh abiotic conditions early in succession that filter out trees. Forest with high CWMwd had a high %NPP attributed to litter because they were dominated by shrubs, which gain little biomass in their trunks. Our findings highlight the links between WD, succession and carbon cycling (biomass and productivity) in this biodiversity hotspot. Seasonal drought limits the growth of plantations. Functional traits are effective indicators to clarify the controlling factors of plantation productivity. In this study, four treatments were carried out for the juvenile Eucalyptus urophylla × E.grandis plantations as (1) no dry-season irrigation or conventional fertilization (C); (2) only dry-season irrigation (W); (3) only conventional fertilization (F); (4) dry-season irrigation and conventional fertilization (WF). During the two years of treatment, growth traits, gas exchange characteristics, and structural properties were measured. The results showed that both dry-season irrigation and conventional fertilization could promote the growth of E. urophylla × E. grandis plantations. The effect of fertilization on increasing biomass of E. urophylla × E. grandis (3 times that of C) was greater than that of dry-season irrigation (only 1.5 times that of C). The biomass of WF was significantly higher than that of F. Dry-season irrigation could play the greatest role in promoting growth only when soil nutrients were sufficient. E. urophylla × E. grandis increased the total leaf area per tree but not the single leaf photosynthetic capacity, indicating the increased growth reflected greater canopy light interception. Fertilization increased the growth of E. urophylla × E. grandis plantations more than irrigation alone, but combining fertilization and dry-season irrigation further improved biomass yields of the juvenile plantations. Therefore, suitable dry-season irrigation management should be considered in seasonally arid areas to further improve the productivity of conventional plantations with only fertilization. This study elucidated the mechanism of dry-season irrigation to enhance the productivity of Eucalyptus plantations by functional traits, which provided strong data support for enhancing the productivity of plantation forests in seasonal arid areas. Key message: We found that the stabilizing mechanisms for forest productivity varied across harvesting intensities in a mixed broad-leaved Korean pine forest. Effects of overyielding at high species richness and species asynchrony occurred only in unharvested and lightly harvested plots, whereas asymmetries between individuals of different size contributed significantly to stabilizing productivity when harvestings became intensive. Context: Understanding the driving factors of forest ecosystem stability has become increasingly crucial in forest management. However, it remains unclear whether and how the stabilizing mechanisms of forest productivity might be influenced by management practices. Aims: We related the temporal stability of aboveground biomass productivity to harvesting history. We further tested how three key driving mechanisms of stability might be modulated by selective harvesting intensities. Methods: Based on a 10-year monitoring (five repeated tree inventories) of a mixed broad-leaved Korean pine forest in Northeastern China recovering from selective harvesting, we examined the relative importance of two diversity-dependent mechanisms (overyielding and species asynchrony) and one size-dependent mechanism (asymmetric growth) for productivity stability across a wide range of intensities (0–73.4% basal area removed). Results: We found that selective harvesting significantly lowered the productivity stability, species asynchrony, and growth dominance coefficient. Growth dominance coefficient had an overall stronger effect on stability than species richness and asynchrony. Moreover, the strengths of stabilizing mechanisms varied across harvesting intensities: effects of overyielding at high species richness and species asynchrony were detected only in unharvested and lightly harvested plots, whereas the explanatory power of growth dominance coefficient outweighed the diversity-related variables when harvesting became intensive. Conclusions: We emphasized the importance to consider both diversity- and size-related explanatory variables as potential mechanisms for the temporal stability of forest productivity. The moose Alces alces is the largest herbivore in the boreal forest biome, where it can have dramatic impacts on ecosystem structure and dynamics. Despite the importance of the boreal forest biome in global carbon cycling, the impacts of moose have only been studied in disparate regional exclosure experiments, leading to calls for common analyses across a biome‐wide network of moose exclosures.In this study, we use airborne laser scanning (ALS) to analyse forest canopy responses to moose across 100 paired exclosure‐control experimental plots distributed across the boreal biome, including sites in the United States (Isle Royale), Canada (Quebec, Newfoundland), Norway, Sweden and Finland.We test the hypotheses that canopy height, vertical complexity and above‐ground biomass (AGB) are all reduced by moose and that the impacts vary with moose density, productivity, temperature and pulse disturbances such as logging and insect outbreaks.We find a surprising convergence in forest canopy response to moose. Moose had negative impacts on canopy height, complexity and AGB as expected. The responses of canopy complexity and AGB were consistent across regions and did not vary along environmental gradients. The difference in canopy height between exclosures and open plots was on average 6 cm per year since the start of exclosure treatment (±2.1 SD). This rate increased with temperature, but only when moose density was high.The difference in AGB between moose exclosures and open plots was 0.306 Mg ha−1 year−1 (±0.079). In browsed plots, stand AGB was 32% of that in the exclosures, a difference of 2.09 Mg ha−1. The uniform response allows scaling of the estimate to a biome‐wide impact of moose of the loss of 448 (±115) Tg per year, or 224 Tg of carbon.Synthesis: Analysis of ALS data from distributed exclosure experiments identified a largely uniform response of forest canopies to moose across regions, facilitating scaling of moose impacts across the whole biome. This article evaluated the relationship between litter production and decomposition in a High-Andean forest and several variables, including rainfall, soil, and structural and floristic characteristics. Litter traps, litter-bags, and rain gauges were installed, and various variables were recorded. The total fine litter production was 4780 kg.ha-1.year-1, with leaves as the most representative fraction (60.4%), while decomposition was between 25 and 30% for 195 days of measurement. Significant correlations were found between fine litter production and incident precipitation (0.60), between height (-0.98) and aboveground biomass (0.97), and between decomposition and moisture (0.75). The results suggest that changes in the forest structure or weather conditions could affect the regulation of ecosystem and biogeochemical functions, highlighting the importance of conserving High-Andean forests, which are threatened by deforestation and climate change. Climate change is posing new challenges to forestry management practices. Thinning reduces competitive pressure in the forest by repeatedly reducing the tree density of forest stands, thereby increasing the productivity of plantations. Considering the impact of thinning on vegetation and physiological and ecological traits, for this study, we used Norway spruce (Picea abies) data from three sites in the PROFOUND dataset to parameterize the 3-PG model in stages. The calibrated 3-PG model was used to simulate the stand diameter at breast height and the stem, root, and leaf biomass data on a monthly scale. The 3PG-MT-LSTM model uses 3-PG simulation data as the input variable. The model uses a long short-term memory neural network (LSTM) as a shared layer and introduces multi-task learning (MTL). Based on the compatibility rules, the interpretability of the model was further improved. The models were trained using single-site and multi-site data, respectively, and multiple indicators were used to evaluate the model accuracy and generalization ability. Our preliminary results show that, compared with the process model and LSTM algorithm without MTL and compatibility rules, the hybrid model has higher biomass simulation accuracy and shows a more realistic biomass response to environmental driving factors. To illustrate the potential applicability of the model, we applied light (10%), moderate (20%), and heavy thinning (30%) at intervals of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 years. Then, we used three climate scenarios—SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5—to simulate the growth of Norway spruce. The hybrid model can effectively capture the impact of climate change and artificial management on stand growth. In terms of climate, temperature and solar radiation are the most important factors affecting forest growth, and under warm conditions, the positive significance of forest management is more obvious. In terms of forest management practices, less frequent light-to-moderate thinning can contribute more to the increase in forest carbon sink potential; high-intensity thinning can support large-diameter timber production. In summary, moderate thinning should be carried out every 10 years in the young-aged forest stage. It is also advisable to perform light thinning procedures after the forest has progressed into a middle-aged forest stage. This allows for a better trade-off of the growth relationship between stand yield and diameter at breast height (DBH). The physical constraint-based hybrid modeling approach is a practical and effective tool. Evapotranspiration demand has increased rapidly as temperatures have risen, affecting forest productivity. Consequently, carbon (C) uptake by forests is being modified; therefore, a more refined knowledge of the relationships between C capture and hydroclimate variability is required, particularly in drought-prone regions. In this study, we analyzed the relationships between climate and C capture as stemwood through the dendroecological analyses of radial growth in 15 conifer species distributed along a broad bioclimatic gradient in Mexico. The C content was calculated using densitometry data; correlations and mixed models were then used to determine the influence of climatic variables (precipitation, mean maximum and minimum temperatures, SPEI drought index) on tree growth. Each species showed specific responses to the climate with Taxodium mucronatum being the most responsive species. Both precipitation and maximum temperature best explained changes in C capture, with minimum temperature and SPEI playing secondary roles. The winter before the growth period was the most important season for C capture, particularly through positive responses to wet-cool conditions. However, the climatic influences of the current fall and summer were also notable. Seasonal climatic influences have implications for C uptake and forest productivity in the face of the severe droughts that repeatedly affect the study region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forest aboveground biomass (AGB) plays an important role in regulating the global carbon cycle and is thus an essential component of ecosystem functioning. In the relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF), studies have shown that many biotic factors (e.g., species, functional traits, and large trees) and abiotic factors have significant impacts on AGB. However, the relative strength of these affecting factors remains unclear. In this study, we analyzed woody plants (diameter at breast height [DBH] ≥ 1 cm) within a 1.6 ha plot in an old-growth subtropical natural forest in southern China. We used structural equation models to test the effects of tree diversity (species, phylogenetic, functional, and size inequality), functional composition, large trees, and environmental factors (topography, soil nutrients, and understory light) on AGB. Our results indicated that size inequality, the community-weighted mean of maximum DBH (CWM_MDBH), and large trees had significant, positive effects on AGB (p < 0.001), while lower soil phosphorus content was found to promote an increase in AGB. Furthermore, large trees, which were mostly composed of dominant tree species, were the main driver of AGB, and the effect of functional composition (e.g., CWM_MDBH) on AGB was substantially reduced by large trees. We argue that the selection effect plays a key role in regulating BEF relationships in subtropical natural forests and conclude that retaining large-diameter trees and dominant species, along with sustaining a complex stand structure, are key measures for improving productivity. The relationship between species diversity and biomass/productivity is a major scientific question in ecology. Exploring this relationship is essential to understanding the mechanisms underpinning the maintenance of biodiversity. Positive, negative, and neutral relationships have been identified in controlled experiments and observational research. However, increasing evidence suggests that the effects of species diversity on aboveground biomass and productivity are influenced by biotic and abiotic factors, but it remains unclear whether scale‐dependent effects affect aboveground biomass and productivity. Herein, we used a generalized linear regression model and a structural equation model to explore relationships between species diversity and productivity/aboveground biomass under different scales and to investigate the effects of topographical factors and species diversity on ecosystem functioning. The results revealed a positive relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning based on species diversity and aboveground biomass. Different sampling scales may impact the relationship between species diversity and ecosystem functioning. A positive relationship was found between species richness and productivity at medium and large scales; however, ambiguous relationships were found in productivity and other species diversity indices. Elevation was a key factor affecting both biomass and productivity. These results suggest that species diversity is not the only factor affecting biomass and productivity, and the positive correlation between species diversity and ecosystem functioning is mediated by abiotic factors. Mixing tree species can lead to more productive forests, but how belowground productivity is affected by mixtures of trees of diverse phylogenetic and eco‐evolutionary histories is unclear. Here, we examine how species origin and phylogeny affect belowground productivity in tree communities of varied richness and functional diversity. We measured standing fine‐root biomass and annual fine‐root production across 41 assemblages of 12 tree species, representing both angiosperms and gymnosperms originating from North America and Europe. Increasing functional diversity of mixtures stimulated overyielding of annual production but did not affect standing biomass. In general, annual productivity of mixtures of species that were less productive in monoculture had neutral (angiosperms) to positive (North American species: +16%) responses to mixing, whereas annual productivity of mixtures of species that were more productive in monoculture had neutral (European species) to negative (gymnosperms: −6%) responses to mixing. These differences translated into angiosperm mixtures overyielding in standing biomass by 16% but no effects of mixing on gymnosperm mixtures. The trends we observed between North American and European species annual production were reversed when considering standing biomass. European mixtures had 14% more standing biomass and North American mixtures had 10% less standing biomass than expected from monocultures. Our study offers a rare examination of the combined roles of origin and phylogeny in forest fine‐root productivity, and suggests varied consequences of biodiversity change for forest belowground productivity based on composition. In North America, belowground productivity of young forests composed of angiosperms and native tree species may be more tightly linked to diversity than that of forests dominated by gymnosperms or European species. This suggests that increased diversity may lead to the greatest enhancement of belowground productivity in native, North American forests dominated by angiosperms, but also that declines in diversity may be felt most strongly in these forests as well. The survival of human and sustainable development of the society both closely rely on forest ecosystem services. Employing two different methods, this paper based on benefit transfer method calculated the forest ecosystem services value of Sichuan province, China. The results showed that the total forest ecosystem services value had a steady rate of increase in Sichuan province from 2008 to 2018, and meanwhile, the different evaluation methods resulted in significant deviation of estimation outcomes. This paper considered the differences of biomass and socioeconomic development which were ignored in prior studies. The Carnegie-Ames-Stanford approach was employed to estimate the net primary productivity of different forest species. Further, the S type R. Pearl growth curve was employed to estimate people’s willingness and ability to pay for forest ecosystem services. This paper provided implications to help forest managers and policy makers pay additional attention to the evaluation systems choosing on forest ecosystem services value and the differences of biomass and socioeconomic development by using benefit transfer method method. Higher-resolution wall-to-wall carbon monitoring in tropical Africa across a range of woodland types is necessary in reducing uncertainty in the global carbon budget and improving accounting for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation Plus (REDD+). This study uses Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery combined with climatic and edaphic variables to estimate the regional distribution of aboveground biomass (AGB) for the year 2020 over the Cross River State, a tropical forest region in Nigeria, using random forest (RF) machine learning. Forest inventory plots were collected over the whole state for training and testing of the RF algorithm, and spread over undisturbed and disturbed tropical forests, and woodlands in croplands and plantations. The maximum AGB plot was estimated to be 588 t/ha with an average of 121.98 t/ha across the entire Cross River State. AGB estimated using random forest yielded an R2 of 0.88, RMSE of 40.9 t/ha, a relRMSE of 30%, bias of +7.5 t/ha and a total woody regional AGB of 0.246 Pg for the Cross River State. These results compare favorably to previous tropical AGB products; with total AGB of 0.290, 0.253, 0.330 and 0.124 Pg, relRMSE of 49.69, 57.09, 24.06 and 56.24% and −41, −48, −17 and −50 t/ha bias over the Cross River State for the Saatchi, Baccini, Avitabile and ESA CCI maps, respectively. These are all compared to the current REDD+ estimate of total AGB over the Cross River State of 0.268 Pg. This study shows that obtaining independent reference plot datasets, from a variety of woodland cover types, can reduce uncertainties in local to regional AGB estimation compared with those products which have limited tropical African and Nigerian woodland reference plots. Though REDD+ biomass in the region is relatively larger than the estimates of this study, REDD+ provided only regional biomass rather than pixel-based biomass and used estimated tree height rather than the actual tree height measurement in the field. These may cast doubt on the accuracy of the estimated biomass by REDD+. These give the biomass map of this current study a comparative advantage over others. The 20 m wall-to-wall biomass map of this study could be used as a baseline for REDD+ monitoring, evaluation, and reporting for equitable distribution of payment for carbon protection benefits and its management. The study aimed to determine the above-ground biomass (AGB) of tropical deciduous forests in Central India using field-based techniques and spaceborne quad-pol ALOS PALSAR-2 L-band and dual-pol Sentinel 1A C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Field sampling based on 73 forested grids exhibited a diverse forest composition in the Satpura Tiger Reserve (STR) with a total of 54 tree species of which 31.48% species were IUCN Red-Listed. The forests were highly diverse (H′=3.22) with a low concentration of dominance (CD = 0.06) and a quite high species evenness (E = 0.81). The sensitivity and correlation between field-based AGB and SAR backscatter in STR were highest in cross-polarization due to its higher sensitivity to the vegetation structure in both L- and C-band SAR, where L-VH based AGB estimates were found more accurate (RMSE:5.17%). The TreeMap 2016 dataset provides detailed spatial information on forest characteristics including number of live and dead trees, biomass, and carbon across the entire forested extent of the continental United States at 30 × 30m resolution, enabling analyses at finer scales where forest inventory is inadequate. We used a random forests machine learning algorithm to assign the most similar Forest Inventory Analysis (FIA) plot to each pixel of gridded LANDFIRE input data. The TreeMap 2016 methodology includes disturbance as a response variable, resulting in increased accuracy in mapping disturbed areas. Within-class accuracy was over 90% for forest cover, height, vegetation group, and disturbance code when compared to LANDFIRE maps. At least one pixel within the radius of validation plots matched the class of predicted values in 57.5% of cases for forest cover, 80.0% for height, 80.0% for tree species with highest basal area, and 87.4% for disturbance. A new feature of the dataset is that it includes linkages to select FIA data in an attribute table included with the TreeMap raster, allowing users to map summaries of 21 variables in a GIS. TreeMap estimates compared favorably with those from FIA at the state level for number of live and dead trees and carbon stored in live and dead trees. Study Implications: TreeMap 2016 provides a 30 × 30 m resolution gridded map of the forests of the continental United States. Attributes of each grid cell include a suite of forest characteristics including biomass, carbon, forest type, and number of live and dead trees. Users can readily produce maps and summaries of these characteristics in a GIS. The TreeMap also includes a database containing, for each pixel, a list of trees with the species, diameter, and height of each tree. TreeMap is being used in the private sector for carbon estimation and by land managers in the National Forest system to investigate questions pertaining to fuel treatments and forest productivity as well as Forest Plan revisions. Evapotranspiration demand has increased rapidly as temperatures have risen, affecting forest productivity. Consequently, carbon (C) uptake by forests is being modified; therefore, a more refined knowledge of the relationships between C capture and hydroclimate variability is required, particularly in drought-prone regions. In this study, we analyzed the relationships between climate and C capture as stemwood through the dendroecological analyses of radial growth in 15 conifer species distributed along a broad bioclimatic gradient in Mexico. The C content was calculated using densitometry data; correlations and mixed models were then used to determine the influence of climatic variables (precipitation, mean maximum and minimum temperatures, SPEI drought index) on tree growth. Each species showed specific responses to the climate with Taxodium mucronatum being the most responsive species. Both precipitation and maximum temperature best explained changes in C capture, with minimum temperature and SPEI playing secondary roles. The winter before the growth period was the most important season for C capture, particularly through positive responses to wet-cool conditions. However, the climatic influences of the current fall and summer were also notable. Seasonal climatic influences have implications for C uptake and forest productivity in the face of the severe droughts that repeatedly affect the study region.

This study quantifies and compares the environmental impacts of production systems of biomass and roundwood from different wood species—maritime pine, eucalyptus, and cryptomeria. The results showed that roundwood and biomass from eucalyptus had the highest environmental impacts in most of the environmental categories. In contrast, cryptomeria products had the lowest impacts. For biomass, the impacts were higher for the forest production scenario when less biomass was produced (eucalyptus). The literature review showed that one of the main topics under study in the quantification of the environmental impacts of biomass is the allocation methodology. Thus, this study compared the environmental impacts of the various scenarios considering different methods of allocation: sub-division of processes, volume, mass, economy, and energy. The results showed that, for most scenarios, the biomass environmental impacts calculated by subdivision of processes had the highest values. In contrast, the environmental impacts of biomass calculated by economic allocation had the lowest environmental impact in most scenarios. The impacts of mass and energy allocation were similar for both products in all scenarios. Furthermore, this study showed that the system boundaries in biomass production have a strong influence on the environmental impacts and require further research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Estimating forest above‐ground biomass (AGB) productivity constitutes one of the most fundamental topics in forest ecological research. Based on a 30‐ha permanent field plot in Northeastern China, we modeled AGB productivity as output, and topography, species diversity, stand structure, and a stand density variable as input across a series of area scales using the Random Forest (RF) algorithm. As the grain size increased from 10 to 200 m, we found that the relative importance of explanatory variables that drove the variation of biomass productivity varied a lot, and the model accuracy was gradually improved. The minimum sampling area for biomass productivity modeling in this region was 140 × 140 m. Our study shows that the relationship of topography, species diversity, stand structure, and stand density variables with biomass productivity modeled using the RF algorithm changes when moving from scales typical of forest surveys (10 m) to larger scales (200 m) within a controlled methodology. Melina (Gmelina arborea) is a fast-growing tree species that is widely used throughout the world for various purposes. The aims of this research were to evaluate the biomass production and C and nutrient pools in G. arborea established in a 15-year-old pure stand (PS) and a mixed stand (MS) in the State of Nayarit, Mexico. Three sampling plots of 1000 m2 were established in each type of stand. The diameter and height of the trees were measured and used to calculate biomass. Forest floor and mineral soil were also sampled. G. arborea represented 40% of the total tree volume in the MS but exhibited a larger diameter (12%) and basal area (11%) per tree in this stand. The productivity in the MS was 27% higher, having mineral soil with a better pH and C:N ratio than in the PS. The MS also contained 44.1% more biomass and 20.3% more C storage than the PS. The forest floor mass (1.3 Mg ha−1) and C (1 Mg ha−1) and N (0.3 Mg ha−1) pools in the MS were higher than in the PS. The mineral soil of both forest stands stored similar C pools. Overall (tree biomass + forest floor + mineral soil), the MS stored more N (13.0%), P (41.7%), K (25.1%), Fe (76.8%), Cu (41.5%) and Zn (38.7%). The arrangement and silvicultural management of stands directly affects dendrometric, biomass production, and C and nutrient pools, but the mineral soil contribution to nutrient buffering will depend on its quality and properties. Summary: Tree size shapes forest carbon dynamics and determines how trees interact with their environment, including a changing climate. Here, we conduct the first global analysis of among‐site differences in how aboveground biomass stocks and fluxes are distributed with tree size.We analyzed repeat tree censuses from 25 large‐scale (4–52 ha) forest plots spanning a broad climatic range over five continents to characterize how aboveground biomass, woody productivity, and woody mortality vary with tree diameter. We examined how the median, dispersion, and skewness of these size‐related distributions vary with mean annual temperature and precipitation.In warmer forests, aboveground biomass, woody productivity, and woody mortality were more broadly distributed with respect to tree size. In warmer and wetter forests, aboveground biomass and woody productivity were more right skewed, with a long tail towards large trees. Small trees (1–10 cm diameter) contributed more to productivity and mortality than to biomass, highlighting the importance of including these trees in analyses of forest dynamics.Our findings provide an improved characterization of climate‐driven forest differences in the size structure of aboveground biomass and dynamics of that biomass, as well as refined benchmarks for capturing climate influences in vegetation demographic models. Considerable uncertainty and debate exist in projecting the future capacity of forests to sequester atmospheric CO2. Here we estimate spatially explicit patterns of biomass loss by tree mortality (LOSS) from largely unmanaged forest plots to constrain projected (2015–2099) net primary productivity (NPP), heterotrophic respiration (HR) and net carbon sink in six dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs) across continents. This approach relies on a strong relationship among LOSS, NPP, and HR at continental or biome scales. The DGVMs overestimated historical LOSS, particularly in tropical regions and eastern North America by as much as 5 Mg ha−1 y−1. The modeled spread of DGVM-projected NPP and HR uncertainties was substantially reduced in tropical regions after incorporating the field-based mortality constraint. The observation-constrained models show a decrease in the tropical forest carbon sink by the end of the century, particularly across South America (from 2 to 1.4 PgC y−1), and an increase in the sink in North America (from 0.8 to 1.1 PgC y−1). These results highlight the feasibility of using forest demographic data to empirically constrain forest carbon sink projections and the potential overestimation of projected tropical forest carbon sinks. Biodiversity is found to have a significant promotion effect on ecosystem functions in manipulation experiments on grassland communities. However, its relative role compared with stand factors or functional identity is still controversial in natural forests. Here, we examined their relative effects on biomass and productivity during forest restoration. We investigated stand biomass and productivity for 24 plots (600 m2) across restoration stages in the subtropical forests of Mt. Shennongjia, Central China. We measured five key functional traits and calculated functional diversity (functional richness, evenness and dispersion) and community-weighted mean of traits. We used general linear models, variation partitioning methods to test the relative importance of stand factors (density, stand age, maximum height, etc.), functional identity, species and functional diversity on biomass and productivity. Our results illustrated that stand biomass and productivity increased significantly as forest restoration, and that community species richness increased, while functional dispersion decreased significantly. Variation partitioning analyses showed that diversity had no significant pure effects on biomass and productivity. However, diversity may affect biomass and productivity through the joint effect with stand factors and functional identity. Overall, we found that stand factors had the strongest effect on biomass and productivity, while functional identity significantly affects productivity but not biomass, suggesting that modulating stand structure and species identity are effective ways to enhance forest carbon storage and sequestrations potential in forest management. Proper estimation of the herb layer annual net primary production (ANPP) can help to appreciate the role of this layer in carbon assimilation and nutrient cycling. Simple methods of ANPP estimation often understate its value. More accurate methods take into account biomass increments of individual species but are more laborious. We conducted our study in an oak-hornbeam forest (site area 12 ha) dominated by beech in NW Poland during two growing seasons (2010 and 2011). We collected herb layer biomass from 7 to 10 square frames (0.6 × 0.6 m). We collected plant biomass every week in April and May and every two weeks for the rest of the growing season. We compared six methods of calculating ANPP. The highest current-year standing biomass (1st method of ANPP calculation) was obtained on May 15, 2010—37.8 g m−2 and May 7, 2011—41.0 g m−2. The highest values of ANPP were obtained by the 6th method based on the sum of the highest products of shoot biomass and density for individual species: 74.3 g m−2 year−1 in 2010 and 94.0 g m−2 year−1 in 2011. The spring ephemeral Anemone nemorosa had the highest share of ANPP with 50% of the total ANPP. Two summer-greens, Galeobdolon luteum and Galium odoratum, each had a ca. 10% share of ANPP. Huge areas of tropical forests are degraded, reducing their biodiversity, carbon, and timber value. The recovery of these degraded forests can be significantly inhibited by climbing plants such as lianas. Removal of super‐abundant climbers thus represents a restoration action with huge potential for application across the tropics. While experimental studies largely report positive impacts of climber removal on tree growth and biomass accumulation, the efficacy of climber removal varies widely, with high uncertainty as to where and how to apply the technique. Using meta‐analytic techniques, we synthesize results from 26 studies to quantify the efficacy of climber removal for promoting tree growth and biomass accumulation. We find that climber removal increases tree growth by 156% and biomass accumulation by 209% compared to untreated forest, and that efficacy remains for at least 19 years. Extrapolating from these results, climber removal could sequester an additional 32 Gigatons of CO2 over 10 years, at low cost, across regrowth, and production forests. Our analysis also revealed that climber removal studies are concentrated in the Neotropics (N = 22), relative to Africa (N = 2) and Asia (N = 2), preventing our study from assessing the influence of region on removal efficacy. While we found some evidence that enhancement of tree growth and AGB accumulation varies across disturbance context and removal method, but not across climate, the number and geographical distribution of studies limits the strength of these conclusions. Climber removal could contribute significantly to reducing global carbon emissions and enhancing the timber and biomass stocks of degraded forests, ultimately protecting them from conversion. However, we urgently need to assess the efficacy of removal outside the Neotropics, and consider the potential negative consequences of climber removal under drought conditions and for biodiversity. The stock of biomass and nutrients has been the basis of many studies in the forest area, mainly those that evaluate the nutritional sustainability of the system. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the biomass and nutrients for the hybrid Eucalyptus urograndis and Acacia mearnsii in monospecific and mixed-species stands at the age of 9 years. For this, the study was carried out in an experimental area in South of Brazil, with three treatments: 100% E. urograndis; 100% A. mearnsii; 50% E. urograndis + 50% A. mearnsii. The hybrid E. urograndis showed lower stemwood in mixed-species planting (105.8 Mg ha−1) when compared to monospecific planting (145.5 Mg ha−1), however A. mearnsii, which increased stemwood at planting (213.9 Mg ha−1) relating to its pure planting (143.6 Mg ha−1). The nitrogen concentration in the leaves and stembark (25 and 5 g kg−1, respectively) of A. mearnsii was significantly higher than that found in the respective hybrid E. urograndis components (18 and 3 g kg−1 for leaves and stembark, respectively). A. mearnsii had higher accumulation of biomass and nutrient accumulation in the mixed-species plantation when compared to its monoculture, and the inverse was observed for the hybrid E. urograndis, thus showing that mixed-species planting exerted a competition effect on eucalyptus. Competition is one of the important factors that determine the productivity of forest stands. However, the effect of competition on the growth dynamics at the individual tree level is rarely documented. This study investigated the influence of competition on the tree dimension, biomass, distribution, and leaf area index (LAI) of Eucalyptus urophylla established in dryland ecosystems in East Nusa Tenggara. Data collection was conducted by N-tree sampling method with the number of center points reaching 36 units. The competition among trees was quantified using Hegyi index. Several parameters were measured to describe tree characteristics, including diameter, height, aboveground biomass, and LAI. The results demonstrated a significant influence of competition on the tree dimension, biomass distribution, and LAI of E. urophylla. The individual tree performance declined along with the increase in competition. By contrast, the increased competition gradually improved the relative contribution of branch biomass to the total aboveground biomass. The exponential model best described the linkage between competition and the tree characteristics of E. urophylla in the study site. Referring to these findings, this study concluded that the growth dynamics of E. urophylla at the individual tree level in dryland ecosystems is substantially influenced by competition. Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration (eCO2) typically stimulates tree growth, which is mediated by nitrogen (N) availability; but how N regulates tree biomass responses to eCO2 remains uncertain, which limits our prediction of forest carbon (C) cycling under future global change scenarios.A meta‐analysis of a global dataset including 3,399 observations from 283 papers published from 1980s to February 2021 was conducted with the aim of elucidating N‐mediated responses of tree biomass production to eCO2 and the underlying mechanisms.We found that eCO2 stimulated tree biomass production (+32.0%), while it induced accumulation of non‐structural carbohydrates in leaves rather than in woods and roots, suggesting that the production may be C‐limited but depend on the sink strength of organs. Biomass responses to eCO2 of N‐fertilized trees (+39.6%) were 68.4% greater than those of non‐fertilized trees (+23.5%), confirming that tree growth is also N‐limited. Such N limitation was alleviated by the eCO2‐induced increases in N uptake and N‐use efficiency (NUE), with the former being more important. Increases in tree N pool arose from the enhanced production of fine roots with a lower specific root length, whereas increases in NUE resulted from the flexibility in tissue C:N ratios instead of N resorption efficiency. The positive responses of tree biomass production to eCO2 were greater for ectomycorrhizal trees and conifers than for arbuscular mycorrhizal trees and angiosperms, respectively.Synthesis. Our findings suggest that eCO2 stimulates tree biomass production by increasing C availability, and alleviating N limitation in a feedback way via enhancing N uptake and NUE, and they improve our mechanistic understanding of responses of forest productivity and C sequestration to eCO2 under global change. Accurately quantifying primary productivity of marine macrophytes is essential to further understanding of coastal ecosystem functioning and will allow its inclusion within marine ecosystem models. Traditional quantification of carbon standing stock and biomass accumulation only allow rough estimates of net primary production whereas incubations that measure photosynthesis in the laboratory lack realism and underestimate true photosynthetic rates. We developed in situ photorespirometry methods to estimate productivity of Laminaria hyperborea, the dominant forest‐building kelp species in Northeast Atlantic. We show that sub‐canopy individuals are better adapted to low light levels with higher photosynthetic efficiency and lower compensation point than larger canopy individuals. Laboratory incubations of L. hyperborea stipes revealed that productivity rates could be positive or negative, even at saturating irradiances, depending on whether they were dominated by autotrophic or heterotrophic communities, respectively. Scaling up productivity estimates based on local population demographics resulted in mean daily net productivity rates of 13.3 and −30.1 g C m−2 d−1, for shallow L. hyperborea forest during late summer and autumn, respectively. At saturating irradiances in the late summer–autumn study period, estimates of net and gross productivity reached 9.4 and 12 g C m−2 h−1, respectively. Sub‐canopy individuals were responsible for 12% of estimated daily productivity during summer, but 20% in autumn. We conclude that in situ photorespirometry provides a more direct measurement of production, unaffected by exudation of dissolved carbon or tissue loss, that can account for sub‐canopy and stipe components of the kelp forest, commonly excluded from traditional studies. Biodiversity and productivity are the two most important attributes linked to the functioning of forest ecosystems. Understanding how diversity and productivity of a forest ecosystem change at a regional scale is crucial for conservation priority. We present an investigation of the structural attributes of forest with respect to biodiversity and biomass through a case study of Dachigam National Park (DNP), a protected forest in Indian Kashmir Himalaya. Systematic random sampling was performed in 60 forest stands of five different forest types of the study region. To compare the biodiversity and biomass attributes among forest types, we used Gaussian error distribution followed by the chi-square Wald test. We estimated structural attributes of the forest to visualize how they relate to the changing biodiversity across different forest types within DNP. The highest values of aboveground, below ground and total biomass were found in Pinus wallichiana forest, while it was lowest in scrub forest. Pinus wallichiana and Quercus robur tree species stocked the largest amounts of biomass, 24.83% and 17.20% respectively, and is a dominant carbon sink. The study would assist in evaluating the forested ecosystems by considering two important attributes of forests represented by diversity and productivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Selective harvesting is a common silvicultural practice to ensure sustainable use of uneven-aged forests, but our understanding of how multiple forest attributes interact to regulate aboveground biomass (AGB) dynamics following selective harvesting remains limited. Using repeated measurements of 13,996 stem-mapped trees distributed in a broad-leaved Korean pine forest (BKPF), we evaluated the recovery trajectory of AGB over a 7-year period following selective harvesting of different intensity: low (15.8% of basal area removed), medium (29.4%) and high (51.4%). In particular, we examined the effects of (1) tree species diversity, (2) stand structure and (3) the post-harvest density on the rate of AGB accumulation (the net annual increment). Despite the enhanced growth of residual trees by all harvesting treatments, rates of AGB accumulation declined with increasing harvesting intensity due to high mortality losses: mean mortality rates of high stands were more than double those of the unharvested stands. Small trees (DBH < 10 cm) suffered greatest mortality because of their sensitivity to changes in environmental conditions. Post-harvest stand biomass and basal area explained most of the variation in the rate of AGB accumulation, followed by stand structural attributes (quadratic mean diameter and growth dominance coefficient), while indices of species diversity (richness, Shannon diversity and evenness) were weak predictors. Our findings suggest that selective harvesting may promote forest production without loss of biodiversity and stimulate the growth of residual trees (particularly small-sized trees, as indicated by the reverse growth dominance) within BKPFs, but harvest intensities should not exceed ~ 30% basal area removed, because higher levels of harvesting are likely to cause serious delays in biomass recovery. In forest ecosystems, forest production, storage and carbon flow are calculated based on biomass measurements. The aim of this study was to compare the biomass and carbon stock of the above-ground, litter and soil in the oak decline and control plots in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province. Four one-hectare sample plots were selected in the healthy (control) and declined stands of oak. Then quantitative information of all trees were measured. Allometric equations were used to calculate the above-ground biomass and carbon stock. Ten microplots were established in each sample plot and all litters were collected. Wet and dry weights and carbon content of the litter samples were measured. To measure soil organic carbon, five soil samples were taken in each sample plot. The results showed that above-ground biomass in the control and decline sample plots were 31.4 and 15.8 tons/hectare respectively. Also, the average of the aboveground carbon stock in the control and decline plots were 15.1 and 7.7 tons/hectare, respectively. The mean of litter carbon in the control plots was 1584.1 kg/ha and in the decline plots was 1148.6 kg/ha. The amount of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and soil moisture content showed a significant difference between the control and decline plots. The results of this study indicated significant changes in biomass, carbon stock and soil in declined stands of oak which may cause irreparable damage to the Zagros forest ecosystem, in the long term. This issue highlights the need for the attention of managers and decision makers of natural resources, regarding the provision of management solutions to control this phenomenon. Fine roots constitute a significant component of the net primary productivity (NPP) of forest ecosystems but are much less studied than aboveground NPP. Comparisons across sites and regions are also hampered by inconsistent methodologies, especially in tropical areas. Here, we present a novel dataset of fine root biomass, productivity, residence time, and allocation in tropical old‐growth rainforest sites worldwide, measured using consistent methods, and examine how these variables are related to consistently determined soil and climatic characteristics. Our pantropical dataset spans intensive monitoring plots in lowland (wet, semi‐deciduous, and deciduous) and montane tropical forests in South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia (n = 47). Large spatial variation in fine root dynamics was observed across montane and lowland forest types. In lowland forests, we found a strong positive linear relationship between fine root productivity and sand content, this relationship was even stronger when we considered the fractional allocation of total NPP to fine roots, demonstrating that understanding allocation adds explanatory power to understanding fine root productivity and total NPP. Fine root residence time was a function of multiple factors: soil sand content, soil pH, and maximum water deficit, with longest residence times in acidic, sandy, and water‐stressed soils. In tropical montane forests, on the other hand, a different set of relationships prevailed, highlighting the very different nature of montane and lowland forest biomes. Root productivity was a strong positive linear function of mean annual temperature, root residence time was a strong positive function of soil nitrogen content in montane forests, and lastly decreasing soil P content increased allocation of productivity to fine roots. In contrast to the lowlands, environmental conditions were a better predictor for fine root productivity than for fractional allocation of total NPP to fine roots, suggesting that root productivity is a particularly strong driver of NPP allocation in tropical mountain regions. Aims Positive biodiversity–ecosystem functioning relationships have been widely reported, predominately from grassland ecosystems. However, this does not necessarily have to apply accordingly in more complex situations such as in forests across different vertical strata. For instance, overstorey tree species richness has been shown to be associated with a lower understorey productivity. Whether or not tree species richness effects add to understorey productivity by increasing (i.e. due to habitat heterogeneity) or reducing resource availability (i.e. through increasing competition) and whether understorey productivity is indeed being governed more strongly by tree species identity are likely to change over time. Moreover, studies also suggested that richness–productivity relationships change with the environmental context. Using an experimental forest plantation with manipulated tree species richness, this study examined these temporal and environmental dynamics across strata. Methods In the context of the Biodiversity-Ecosystem Functioning project in subtropical China (BEF-China), we made use of understorey biomass samples repeatedly collected over a time period of 3 years along a tree species richness gradient. The effects of tree species richness, tree species identities and time were studied across different environmental treatments for their impact on understorey biomass. Important Findings While we found significant and consistent tree layer identity effects on understorey biomass, no such effect was encountered for tree species richness. Our results also indicate that among structural layers in forests, there might not be a single, generalizable overstorey species richness–understorey productivity relationship, and that the extent as to which overstorey-related environmental factors such as light transmittance contribute to understorey productivity change with time. How the relationship between species richness and productivity changes along environmental gradients remains poorly understood.We examined the context dependency of complementarity processes underpinning this relationship (biotic feedbacks, resource partitioning and facilitation) using the framework of Grime's (1973) humped‐back model. We considered several scenarios of variation in competition and facilitation along environmental gradients, either monotonic with the most common or intense facilitation at the most abiotically severe end of gradients or nonlinear with the strongest facilitation at intermediate positions along gradients.How competition shifts to facilitation along environmental gradients is a key for determining where the effect of species richness on productivity occurs. Based on the literature, the original Stress Gradient Hypothesis would likely predict that complementarity effects should be the greatest, or the most important, in the most abiotically stressful environments. Alternatively, both the 'collapse of facilitation' and the 'shift back to competition' scenarios predict that the highest overall complementary effects on productivity, not biomass, would most likely occur at intermediate positions along environmental stress gradients, but this might vary depending on the source of stress. This latter prediction is consistent with a great deal of literature on natural gradients of productivity and species richness.Synthesis. Our predictions illustrate the importance of better understanding the context dependency of complementarity processes and the key role of facilitation along environmental gradients to better focus conservation efforts where ecosystem functioning is more likely to be negatively affected by species loss, in particular in species‐rich communities. Increasing attention for adjusting forest structural and species diversity has been paid to enhance carbon storage. However, the relative importance of stand spatial structural diversity and species diversity to restored stand carbon stocks remains unclear. To address this issue, we conducted a sample plot setup in the Loess Plateau with the aim of exploring the effects of stand spatial structural diversity and species diversity on forest carbon stocks. Therefore, we determined index parameters for species diversity (Simpson, Shannon-Wiener, and Pielou) and spatial structural diversity (Angular scale, Mingling, Aggregation, and Competition) within the oak forest ecosystem. We examined carbon storage in all vegetation organs and different soil layers. Additionally, we employed a structural equation model to develop a model that illustrates the effects of stand spatial structure and species diversity on ecosystem carbon storage. The results reveal that stand spatial structure and species diversity influence the ecosystem carbon storage through biomass (trees and litter) and soil carbon (0–100 cm). Stand spatial structure exhibits positive direct effects (path coefficients: 0.764 and 0.890), while species diversity shows negative direct effects (−0.320 and −0.206) on biomass and soil carbon, respectively. Finally, the total effect of spatial structure diversity on forest carbon storage surpasses that of species diversity. Therefore, stand spatial structure should be adjusted preferentially during forest management in fragile ecological environment. Summary: Tropical forests vary widely in biomass carbon (C) stocks and fluxes even after controlling for forest age. A mechanistic understanding of this variation is critical to accurately predicting responses to global change. We review empirical studies of spatial variation in tropical forest biomass, productivity and woody residence time, focusing on mature forests. Woody productivity and biomass decrease from wet to dry forests and with elevation. Within lowland forests, productivity and biomass increase with temperature in wet forests, but decrease with temperature where water becomes limiting. Woody productivity increases with soil fertility, whereas residence time decreases, and biomass responses are variable, consistent with an overall unimodal relationship. Areas with higher disturbance rates and intensities have lower woody residence time and biomass. These environmental gradients all involve both direct effects of changing environments on forest C fluxes and shifts in functional composition – including changing abundances of lianas – that substantially mitigate or exacerbate direct effects. Biogeographic realms differ significantly and importantly in productivity and biomass, even after controlling for climate and biogeochemistry, further demonstrating the importance of plant species composition. Capturing these patterns in global vegetation models requires better mechanistic representation of water and nutrient limitation, plant compositional shifts and tree mortality. Questions: The relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF) vary largely across natural ecosystems, with a unimodal, monotonous linear or no relationship. However, it remains unclear how BEF relationships vary under global change. Given future predicted changes in precipitation and nitrogen (N) deposition, it is crucial to determine how precipitation change and N deposition affect grassland biodiversity and productivity, and regulate their relationships. Location: A Dry Mixed-Grass Prairie of western Canada. Methods: We established a manipulative field experiment of increased precipitation (water addition with approximately 15% and 30% more monthly precipitation) and N addition (10 g/m² ) using a randomized complete block design, including six treatments, each replicated five times (30 plots). We conducted vegetation sampling with a 1 m × 1 m quadrat in each plot from 2016 to 2017, to examine the individual and interactive effects of water and N addition on plant diversity, functional group composition, above- and below-ground productivity, and the diversity–productivity relationships. Results: We found a positive linear diversity–above-ground biomass (AGB) relationship under increased precipitation, which was attributed to the water-induced increase in the abundance of forbs in the plant community, further promoting the positive effect of plant diversity on AGB. However, N addition caused a negative linear diversity–AGB relationship by increasing AGB and reducing plant diversity. The effects of N on diversity and productivity can be further strengthened under increased precipitation, which was due to the increase of C3 rhizomatous grasses with high above- and below-ground biomass and the decrease of forbs with high richness. Conclusions: Our results suggest that changes in functional group composition determine the plant species’ diversity, productivity, and their relationships under increasing precipitation and N deposition, which has significant implications for understanding and modelling ecosystem productivity in the context of global change. Paper aims: This study evaluates agricultural and forest residues in Portugal to select the best candidates to use in second generation bioethanol (2G bioethanol) production. Originality: The growth in the significance and level of decisions in biomass resources to 2G bioethanol and the involved complexity clearly encourage a research strategy to identify and select the wastes according to a multiplicity of criteria. Research method: To address the key research objective this research used a multicriteria decision analysis method, MACBETH, to structuring the values of concern and identifying the key criteria, to evaluating the main agricultural and forest waste with respect to each criterion, to weighting the criteria and analyzing the biomass residues overall attractiveness and exploring the model's results. Main findings: As main findings of the study we found that Eucalyptus waste is the most promising forest residue to produce lignocellulosic bioethanol followed by Paulownia Tomentosa waste. The utilization of forest residues to the production of bioethanol in Portugal may represent in the future an important economic activity with huge environmental benefits. Implications for theory and practice: The multicriteria approach addressed the research objectives and is simple to use with great potential for circular economy strategy issues. Summary: Variations in crown forms promote canopy space‐use and productivity in mixed‐species forests. However, we have a limited understanding on how this response is mediated by changes in within‐tree biomass allocation. Here, we explored the role of changes in tree allometry, biomass allocation and architecture in shaping diversity–productivity relationships (DPRs) in the oldest tropical tree diversity experiment.We conducted whole‐tree destructive biomass measurements and terrestrial laser scanning. Spatially explicit models were built at the tree level to investigate the effects of tree size and local neighbourhood conditions. Results were then upscaled to the stand level, and mixture effects were explored using a bootstrapping procedure.Biomass allocation and architecture substantially changed in mixtures, which resulted from both tree‐size effects and neighbourhood‐mediated plasticity. Shifts in biomass allocation among branch orders explained substantial shares of the observed overyielding. By contrast, root‐to‐shoot ratios, as well as the allometric relationships between tree basal area and aboveground biomass, were little affected by the local neighbourhood.Our results suggest that generic allometric equations can be used to estimate forest aboveground biomass overyielding from diameter inventory data. Overall, we demonstrate that shifts in tree biomass allocation are mediated by the local neighbourhood and promote DPRs in tropical forests. Aim: Biodiversity and ecosystem productivity vary across the globe, and considerable effort has been made to describe their relationships. Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning research has traditionally focused on how experimentally controlled species richness affects net primary productivity (S → NPP) at small spatial grains. In contrast, the influence of productivity on richness (NPP → S) has been explored at many grains in naturally assembled communities. Mismatches in spatial scale between approaches have fuelled debate about the strength and direction of biodiversity–productivity relationships. Here, we examine the direction and strength of the influence of productivity on diversity (NPP → S) and the influence of diversity on productivity (S → NPP) and how these vary across spatial grains. Location: Contiguous USA. Time period: 1999–2015. Major taxa studied: Woody species (angiosperms and gymnosperms). Methods: Using data from North American forests at grains from local (672 m2) to coarse spatial units (median area = 35,677 km2), we assess relationships between diversity and productivity using structural equation and random forest models, while accounting for variation in climate, environmental heterogeneity, management and forest age. Results: We show that relationships between S and NPP strengthen with spatial grain. Within each grain, S → NPP and NPP → S have similar magnitudes, meaning that processes underlying S → NPP and NPP → S either operate simultaneously or that one of them is real and the other is an artefact. At all spatial grains, S was one of the weakest predictors of forest productivity, which was largely driven by biomass, temperature and forest management and age. Main conclusions: We conclude that spatial grain mediates relationships between biodiversity and productivity in real‐world ecosystems and that results supporting predictions from each approach (NPP → S and S → NPP) serve as an impetus for future studies testing underlying mechanisms. Cyanobacterial mat communities are the main drivers of primary productivity in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. These microbial communities form laminar mats on desert pavement surfaces adjacent to glacial meltwater streams, ponds, and lakes. The low-density nature of these communities and their patchy distribution make assessments of distribution, biomass, and productivity challenging. We used satellite imagery coupled with in situ surveying, imaging, and sampling to systematically estimate microbial mat biomass in selected wetland regions in Taylor Valley, Antarctica. On January 19th, 2018, the WorldView-2 multispectral satellite acquired an image of our study areas, where we surveyed and sampled seven 100 m2 plots of microbial mats for percent ground cover, ash-free dry mass (AFDM), and pigment content (chlorophyll-a, carotenoids, and scytonemin). Multispectral analyses revealed spectral signatures consistent with photosynthetic activity (relatively strong reflection at near-infrared wavelengths and relatively strong absorption at visible wavelengths), with average normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) values of 0.09 to 0.28. Strong correlations of microbial mat ground cover (R2 = 0.84), biomass (R2 = 0.74), chlorophyll-a content (R2 = 0.65), and scytonemin content (R2 = 0.98) with logit transformed NDVI values demonstrate that satellite imagery can detect both the presence of microbial mats and their key biological properties. Using the NDVI—biomass correlation we developed, we estimate carbon (C) stocks of 21,715 kg (14.7 g C m−2) in the Canada Glacier Antarctic Specially Protected Area, with an upper and lower limit of 74,871 and 6312 kg of C, respectively. Biodiversity can affect the properties of groups of organisms, such as ecosystem function and the persistence of colonizing populations. Genomic data offer a newly available window to diversity, complementary to other measures like taxonomic or phenotypic diversity. We tested whether native genetic diversity in field experimental stands of Arabidopsis thaliana affected their aboveground biomass and fecundity in their colonized range. We constructed some stands of genotypes that we a priori predicted would differ in performance or show overyielding. We found no relationship between genetic diversity and stand total biomass. However, increasing stand genetic diversity increased fecundity in high-resource conditions. Polyculture (multiple genotype) stands consistently yielded less biomass than expected based on the yields of component genotypes in monoculture. This under-yielding was strongest in stands with late-flowering and high biomass genotypes, potentially due to interference competition by these genotypes. Using a new implementation of association mapping, we identified genetic loci whose diversity was associated with stand-level yield, revealing a major flowering time locus associated with under-yielding of polycultures. Our field experiment supports community ecology studies that find a range of diversity-function relationships. Nevertheless, our results suggest diversity in colonizing propagule pools can enhance population fitness. The earth's future climate state is highly dependent upon changes in terrestrial C storage in response to rising concentrations of atmospheric CO₂. Here we show that consistently enhanced rates of net primary production (NPP) are sustained by a C-cascade through the root-microbe-soil system; increases in the flux of C belowground under elevated CO₂ stimulated microbial activity, accelerated the rate of soil organic matter decomposition and stimulated tree uptake of N bound to this SOM. This process set into motion a positive feedback maintaining greater C gain under elevated CO₂ as a result of increases in canopy N content and higher photosynthetic N-use efficiency. The ecosystem-level consequence of the enhanced requirement for N and the exchange of plant C for N belowground is the dominance of C storage in tree biomass but the preclusion of a large C sink in the soil.
