Background: While several biologics have been reported from different parts of Clitoria ternatea, a herbaceous climber of the family Fabaceae, specific production of cationic peptides other than cyclotides ( Objective: The study aims to uncover potential bioactivities and characteristics of novel cationic peptides from C. ternatea seeds. Methods: C. ternatea seed cationic peptide purified by simple and cost-effective procedures was analyzed by electrophoresis and mass spectrometry. Antimicrobial efficacy was evaluated against bacterial and fungal pathogens. Antioxidant potential was quantified by in vitro antioxidant assays. Physicochemical characterization and Tandem mass spectrometry were performed. Results: An 8.5 kDa cationic peptide purified from C. ternatea seeds was active against Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, Aeromonas hydrophila and Escherichia coli at a minimum inhibitory concentration in the range of 8-32 μg/ml. This activity was totally uncompromised at pH 5-8 or after 1 h of heat treatment at 70-80ºC, but was sensitive to protease treatment. Concentration-dependent free-radical scavenging activity and ferric-reducing capacity demonstrated the antioxidant potential of the peptide. Tandem MS analysis of trypsin-digested peptide based on shotgun proteomics detected matching peptide sequences with one or two cysteine residues but had low sequence coverage (≤17%) to known sequences in the C. ternatea protein database. Taken together, the distinct characteristics of this novel 8.5 kDa peptide clearly distinguish it from known cyclotides of C. ternatea. Conclusions: Insights have been obtained into the functional characteristics of what appears to be a novel cationic peptide from C. ternatea seeds, exhibiting significant antimicrobial and antioxidant activities.

Introduction: Global rise in the Aedes-borne diseases and harmful effects of synthetic insecticides has diverted research to explore secondary metabolites in plants as mosquito control agent in the form of nanoparticles. Current study investigated Clitoria ternatea-mediated nanoparticles against Aedes aegypti. Methods: The aqueous and hexane leaf extracts of C. ternatea were assayed against Ae. aegypti early fourth instars. The extract-mediated silver nanocomposites (AgNCs) were synthesized after optimizing the volume and concentration of silver nitrate solution. The synthesis was tracked by the colour change of reaction mixture from pale yellow to dark brown followed by monitoring with UV-Visible spectroscopy and Dynamic Light Scattering. Results: The biosynthesis of 3 mM, 4 mM and 5 mM AgNCs was traced at 438, 401 and 407 nm, respectively. The average particle size distribution ranged from 34.62 to 60.64 nm and polydispersity index was 0.6-0.7. The 24 h larval exposure with aqueous and hexane leaf extracts demonstrated respective LC50 values of 53.057 and 42.179 mg/L, which decreased significantly on larvicidal assay with NCs. The 5mM AgNCs showed the maximum efficiency with LC50 of 10.317 mg/L after 24 h. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy images demonstrated a spherical, poly-dispersed structure with diameter in the 1-27 nm range. The assays against non-targets; Moina and Cyclops ascertained the eco-safety of NCs. Conclusion: The study demonstrated the C. ternatea leaf extract as possible effective mosquito nano-larvicide, alternate to traditional insecticides. Field studies, which could not be held due to the current pandemic, would further ascertain the possible use of these NCs against Aedes larvae.

Free radicals are one of the triggering factors for degenerative diseases. Free radical activity can be minimized or prevented in the presence of antioxidant compounds. The butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) has long been used as a traditional medicine to cure various diseases. Previous research has shown that the Butterfly pea flower has bioactive compounds, one of which is flavonoids, which act as antioxidants. Butterfly pea flower can be used as another substitute in making black tea-based kombucha drinks. Kombucha fermentation can increase the benefits of Butterfly pea flower with the presence of organic acids, minerals, and vitamins produced during the fermentation process. This study aims to determine the effect of fermentation time on chemical characteristics including pH, reducing sugar content, and antioxidant activity. Based on analysis of variance ANOVA showed that the length of time fermentation had a very significant effect (P>0.01) on pH, reducing sugar content and antioxidant activity of black tea and Butterfly pea flower kombucha. The longer the fermentation time, the lower the pH and sugar content in the medium. Optimum antioxidant activity occurred on the 8th day of fermentation in the variation of treatment P3 (3:3) which was 89.74%. These results indicate that black tea kombucha and Butterfly pea flower are categorized as having high antioxidant activity at the interval of 68.45% to 89.74%.

Pollen of butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea L.) could germinate in vitro with emergence of 1, 2 and 3 tubes from individual pollen grain on germination medium (modified after Mercado et al. Sci Hortic 57:273–281, 1994). The highest percentage of pollen germination was observed on medium supplemented with 20% sucrose while addition of osmotica such as polyethylene glycol or mannitol did not have positive effect on butterfly pea pollen germination. Starch utilization, through conversion to simpler sugars including sucrose, may be the cause for pollen tube elongation. The optimum pH for maximum germination (42%) was recorded to be 5.7. Addition of various plant growth regulators including brassin-like substance and GA3 singly into medium supplemented with 20% sucrose at pH 5.7 did not result in germination percentage higher than that on the medium supplemented with only 20% sucrose. The germination percentage was increased to 71% and the pollen tube length was the greatest when butterfly pea pollen was cultured on medium supplemented with 20% sucrose, 0.25 mg L− 1 brassin-like substance and 1 mg L− 1 GA3 at pH 5.7. This suggests that brassin-like substance and GA3 may play an important synergistic role on pollen germination of butterfly pea in vitro.

In this study, a simple pH-colorimetric film was developed to detect the spoilage of pasteurized milk. The biosensor was fabricated by incorporating the pH-sensitive anthocyanins (AC) extracted from blue pea (Clitoria ternatea L.) flower into a starch-based edible film. Cyclotides, a class of macrocyclic plant peptides, characterized by a cyclic backbone and three inter-locking disulfide bonds, may be divided into two major structural subfamilies, Möbius and Bracelet, based on the presence or absence of a specific proline residue. The present study describes the suite of cyclotides obtained from Clitoria ternatea, characterized by LC-MS and MS/MS techniques. Notable variations in product ion distributions were observed in cyclotides belonging to different structural subfamilies based on the number and positions of proline residues. For instance, Cter M which is an abundant Möbius cyclotide in this plant containing three proline residues, displayed distinct b- and y- ion characteristics in the MS/MS spectra compared to Cliotide T1, another commonly identified cyclotide but belonging to the Bracelet subfamily having two proline residues. The distinct fragmentation pattern of prototypical cyclotides of each structural subfamily, determined by Xxx-Pro bond fragmentation, was used to rapidly identify and sequence a novel cyclotide ctr pep 30 from this plant.

Background Autism spectrum disorder is primarily characterized by complex behavioral and altered memory as a consequence of neuronal development abnormalities. The treatment of autism is highly challenging because of the lack of knowledge about its exact etiopathology. In the Ayurvedic system of medicine, there are group of plants named ‘Medhya drugs' because of their ability to improve brain- and neuron-related activities like learning and memory. Clitoria ternatea L. is one of the listed ‘Medhya drugs’ which have been proved for its memory enhancement effects; in the present study, the ethanolic root extract of Clitoria ternatea L. was evaluated for its neuroprotective ability against propionic acid-induced memory and behavior impairments in an autistic rat model. The variation in behavior and memory were investigated by utilizing different procedures like rat elevated plus maze and novel object recognition test. In vitro assays for the estimations of glutamate and serotonin were also performed in isolated rat brain tissue homogenate. Results The object recognition and elevated plus maze test were showed the promising effects of Clitoria ternatea L. ethanolic root extract against the propionic acid-induced autism. In this study, the propionic acid infused rats (Group II) fail to recognize and explore the novel object compared to Group I (infused with phosphate-buffered saline) animals; extract treatment at two different doses (250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg) (Groups III & IV, respectively) prevented these damage significantly (p Clitoria ternatea L. Extract treatment also significantly reduced the concentration of different neurotransmitters like serotonin and glutamate in rat brain homogenate (Groups III &IV) in a dose-dependent manner as compared with the Group II. Conclusion The ethanolic root extract of Clitoria ternatea L. proved to be effective against propionic acid-induced memory and behavior impairments in an autistic rat model.

Mix pasture contains more complete nutrition for animal feed. This study aims to determine the effect of giving sheep feces compost with different fertilization doses and intervals on the productivity of mixed pastures (Clitoria ternatea and Brachiaria ruziziensis). This research was conducted in Kotangan Village, Kec. Galang, Kab. Deli Serdang North Sumatra from September to November 2020. The experimental design was used a split-plot design with two treatment factors and three replications. Factor I is the main plot, namely the fertilization interval: N1 = once every four weeks and N2 = once every two weeks. Factor II as a subplot which were doses of compost : P0 = control (without compost), P1 = compost 1 kg/plot (10 t/h), P 2 = compost 2 kg/plot (20 t/h) and P3 = compost 3 kg/plot (30t/h).The variables observed were plant height, number of leaves, number of tillers, number of branches, fresh production, dry matter, crude protein, and crude fiber. The results showed that sheep feces compost doses and different time intervals for fertilization had a significant effect (P0,05) on plant height, the number of leaves and number of branches of Clitoria ternatea, the height of Brachiaria ruziziensisas, and fresh and dry mixed pasture production. The appropriate fertilization interval was once every two weeks, and the best fertilizer dose was 3 kg/plot (30 t/h).

Active compounds from natural sources such as butterfly pea flowers (Clitoria ternatea L.) such as anthocyanin was found able to be integrated with chitosan and Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) polymers in their application as smart packaging. Smart packaging that contains anthocyanin shows a colour response to changes in pH due to food spoilage. This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of chitosan (CH) and PVA proportion on the quality of biodegradable film incorporating butterfly pea flower’s anthocyanin (BPFA) extract included film thickness, tensile strength (TS), elongation (E%), total anthocyanin content and the film colour response at different pH range were characterized. Concentrated anthocyanin extract was obtained from butterfly pea flower petals in ultrasonic-assisted leaching using ethanol as a solvent and followed by rotary vacuum evaporation. The film-forming solution was prepared from a binary mixture of CH:PVA in the ratio of 20:80, 40:60, 60:40, and 80:20. The results showed that films obtained from all combinations could exhibit different colour responses in various pH ranges, indicating the successful incorporation of anthocyanin. The film with CH:PVA ratio of 40:60 showed a more pronounced colour change, among other treatments. It was also characterized by a thickness of 0.15 mm, TS of 11.02 MPa, E% of 48.00%, and total anthocyanin of 25.08 mg/g. The film showed high potential to be used as biodegradable smart packaging for the food system which produces pH change upon deterioration.

Neurotoxic aggregation of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptides is a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) is an associated process. In the present study, we report the neuroprotective effects of disulfide-rich, circular peptides from Clitoria ternatea (C. ternatea) (butterfly pea) on Aβ-induced toxicity in transgenic Caenorhabditis elegans. Cyclotides (∼30 amino acids long) are a special class of cyclic cysteine knot peptides. We show that cyclotide-rich fractions from different plant tissues delay Aβ-induced paralysis in the transgenic CL4176 strain expressing the human muscle-specific Aβ1-42 gene. They also improved Aβ-induced chemotaxis defects in CL2355 strain expressing Aβ1-42 in the neuronal cells. ROS assay suggests that this protection is likely mediated by the inhibition of Aβ oligomerization. Furthermore, Aβ deposits were reduced in the CL2006 strain treated with the fractions. The study shows that cyclotides from C. ternatea could be a source of a novel pharmacophore scaffold against neurodegenerative diseases.

Blue pea flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) is known as the source of anthocyanin and has potential as a natural blue dye. The present study aimed to determine the effect of additional blue pea flower (BPFE) to yogurt from various types of milk. The study used dried blue pea flowers, extracted with water in 3:1 (g.L-1) ratio, at the extraction condition of 60 ˚C and 45 minutes. The fermentation was processed by adding BPFE to (A) liquid skim milk, (B) ultra-high temperature (UHT) milk, (C) pasteurized milk, (D) UHT milk with skim powder, and (E) pasteurized milk with skim powder. Then, the yogurt starter was added to all milk samples, evenly mixed and incubated for 24 hours at 37 ˚C. The fermentation of all five different milk to make plain yogurt also processed with same method without addition of BPFE. The antioxidant activity and color intensity of yogurt are evaluated to investigate the effect of BPFE in yogurt. The result showed that the plain yogurt without the addition of BPFE has antioxidant activity and increases with the addition of BPFE. Skim milk BPFE yogurt has the highest antioxidant activity (437.04 ppm) with the values of L*, a*, b* was 37.35; 2.02; -1.32, respectively. Antioxidant activity of the other BPFE yogurt, which was added with skim milk, also increased. The BPFE yogurt made from skim milk or added skim milk had higher antioxidant activity than the other types of milk.

Our previous study demonstrated that the blue butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea) had several pharmacological effects to treat inflammatory-related diseases, including edema and diabetes. However, its benefit for preventing dental caries and protecting the tooth has not been explored yet. Here, we investigated whether C. ternatea ethanolic extract (CTEE) prevented dental caries through antibacterial and antiquorum sensing activities toward oral pathogen Streptococcus mutans in vitro. CTEE was made by using kinetic maceration in ethanol. Antibacterial activity of CTEE against S. mutans was tested using disk diffusion agar and microdilution assays. Quorum sensing system employed Chromobacterium violaceum bacteria to produce violacein, and CTEE at various concentrations was tested for its antiquorum sensing activity to inhibit the violacein production. Our results demonstrated that CTEE at 1 mg/mL showed a significant inhibition >90% against S. mutans, indicating its MIC value. For the quorum sensing system, CTEE at the lowest concentration (0.25 mg/mL) significantly inhibit up to 68% of violacein produced by C. violaceum. These data indicate that CTEE may act as a natural oral functional food with antibacterial and antiquorum sensing activities for the prevention of dental caries.

Clitoria ternatea, Cucurbita maxima, Artemisia vulgaris were the Indian native plants used in the treatment of different diseases. The methanolic extract of Clitoria ternatea, petroleum ether extract of Cucurbita maxima and methanolic extract of Artemisia vulgaris were investigated using MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay. These extracts were assessed using N2a cell line (Neuroblastoma). Cisplatin was used as a positive control based on IC50 values. Artemisia vulgaris methanol extract have highest cytotoxicity (80.81ug/mL) and Cucurbita maxima seed extract have lowest cytotoxicity (57.655ug/mL). This study aims to determine the comparison of the inhibition zone between theextract of butterfly pea flower and lemongrass, against the bacteria streptococcusmutans and staphylococcus aureus. The samples that will be used in this researchare streptococcus mutans and staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Data analysis usednormality test and statistical test was performed using ANOVA analysis test and posthoc test. The results showed that there was no difference in the inhibition zone ofbutterfly pea flower extract against streptococcus mutans bacteria and lemongrassextract against streptococcus mutans. Clitoria ternatea L., known as the butterfly pea plant, is from the Fabaceae family and is commonly used in traditional medicine or as a brain tonic in Asia. The root extracts of C. ternatea have been previously studied for its neuroprotective properties linked to memory enhancement of the mammalian brain, indirectly delaying the occurrence of neurodegenerative diseases. The current study aims to establish in vitro adventitious root cultures of C. ternatea via cotyledon explants and to identify the phytoconstituents of the induced adventitious roots. In this study, the highest percentage of induction (95.24%) was achieved in half-strength MS medium supplemented with 2.50 mg/L NAA (1-naphthaleneacetic acid) after 6 weeks of culture. Results also indicated that the supplementation of 1.50 mg/L NAA induced the highest number of adventitious roots (12.86 ± 2.14), while 2.50 mg/L 4-Cl-IAA (4-chloroindole-3-acetic acid) yielded higher adventitious root length (0.75 ± 0.13 cm) in comparison with the other auxin treatments. Microscopic analysis indicated thicker in vitro root morphology for all NAA treatments in comparison with the roots of in vitro seedling. Ethanolic extract of in vitro-generated adventitious roots showed potential anti-acetylcholinesterase activities (IC50 = 1519.89 ± 0.18 μg/mL) albeit being lower than the control (IC50 = 70.37 ± 0.01 μg/mL), while gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis identified the presence of pentacyclic triterpenes, phytosterols and fatty acids in the adventitious root culture that are linked to the mammalian neuroprotective properties of C. ternatea. The current investigation reports on the potential of C. ternatea root cultures being further utilized to produce valuable metabolites linked to the mammalian memory enhancement.

Objective Clitoria ternatea is a well-known bioactive plant used to treat several inflammatory ailments in Ayurvedic system of medicine in India. The present investigation aimed to determine the anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activity of ethanolic extract of Clitoria ternatea roots (EECT) in animal models. Methods The anti-inflammatory activity of the EECT was evaluated by carrageenan and histamine-induced paw edema. Results EECT showed a significant reduction in mean paw edema volume in both carrageenan and histamine-induced inflammation. The efficacy of EECT in rheumatoid arthritis was tested against Freund’s complete adjuvant (CFA) induced arthritic model in Wistar rats. The anti-arthritic effect of EECT was determined by systematic scoring of arthritis symptoms and measuring paw edema. A considerable decrease in paw diameter was observed in the EECT (200 and 400 mg/kg) and diclofenac (10 mg/kg) treated groups after day 7. Diclofenac (10 mg/kg) and EECT (400 mg/kg) showed a significant reduction in paw diameter from day 14 compared with CFA control (P Conclusion This study provides a pharmacological rationale for the traditional use of C. ternatea against inflammation and rheumatoid arthritis in India.

The experiment was conducted for 3 months using nine (9) males Bali Cattle ages 2,5 - 3,5 or an average of 3.0 years old based on teeth estimated with initial body weight range is 227-290 kg or an average of 257.40±23,60 kg in the Fattening Stalls, Bero Sembada Farmers Group, Laen Manen Sub District, Belu Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. This research is adapted to the practice of ranchers in fattened cattle that includes management of feeding, housing, and health. The type of feed given during the study was Centrosema pubences, Clitoria ternatea, Fresh Corn Straw, Kinggras, Leucaena leucocepala, Natural Grass, Elephant Grass, and Turi. The results of the research showed that the Bali cattle male finishing phase on fattening with forage, yield dry matter intake (kg/head/day) reached 7.079 or 2.509 % of BW, while the crude protein and organic material intake respectively 1.053 and 6.440 (kg/head/day). Digestibility coefficients of dry matter were 56.68%, crude protein 69.86%, and organic matter 68.83%. It can be concluded that the use of forage on fattening male Bali cattle by ranchers was the produce dry matter intake, crude protein, and organic matter are high quite but gives relatively low digestibility.

The present study demonstrated the evaluation of starch based film formulated with ClitoriaTernatea flowers extracts which act as pH indicator. Maceration, sonication and infusion extraction were employed to determine the percentage yield of the flower extracts. Extract solutions (1mg/mL) were subjected to UPLC-QTOF/MS in order to detect and identify the chemical constituents of C. ternatea. UV-Vis analysis is done by treating the extracts (4mg/mL) with prepared buffer solution in various pH value ranged (2.0 – 11.0) and the absorbance were observed within a broad range of wavelength (400-700 nm). 100 mL solution of 4g starch, C. ternatea extracts and glycerol (19g plasticizer/100g starch) in distilled water were undergo gelatinization process to form the desired thin film. The functional group presented in the film and raw materials were detected and defined by analyzing through FTIR spectroscopy. From the results, maceration techniques produced the higher yield of extracts with 41.48% compared to sonication and infusion method. Variation colours of C. ternatea solution were displayed in different value of pH. At pH lower than 3, the extract solution illustrated light red to purple in colour while at higher pH value to the more basic pH (4,5,6,7,8 and 9), the colour can be perceived as blue. From the gelatinization process, the blue smooth thin layer of film was produced. FTIR analysis showed that all of samples contain C-O bond (3300 cm-1). Starch based film formulated with C. ternatea as pH indicator can be applied to detect the spoilage of foods in the production of food wrapper and packaging.

Clitoria ternatea (L.) (Bunga Telang), is a well-known plant used as food colouring through its flowers. The plant’s leaves are also being used as medicinal ingredients to cure several diseases. However, the medicinal properties were not being explored extensively which could diversify the plant’s usage. The research was conducted on the inclusion of C. ternatea leaves to enhance the physicochemical properties and sensory acceptability of herbal pastille. Five different formulations of C. ternatea leaves pastille were developed with different percentages of C. ternatea leaves namely 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5%, 10.0% and 12.5%. Physicochemical properties (antioxidant properties, colour profile, texture, moisture, sugar, fat, protein, ash, calorie and texture profile) and the sensory acceptability of C. ternatea leaves pastille was observed. The results show that the highest °Brix value was observed in sample D (74.20°) while water activity was higher in sample B (0.73). The analysis showed that the control sample exhibited a high hardness value (2641.70 N), springiness and cohesion values (0.87 N), gumminess value (2338.75 N), chewiness value (2089.71 N) and resilience value (0.44 N) to that of C. ternatea leaves herbal pastille. Sample E was found to contain a high TFA value (1.45), TPC value (23.32 GAE mg/g), and DPPH value (27.72%). Based on overall acceptance, the sensory analysis showed that the products were accepted by the panellists. Thus, the study revealed that the physicochemical properties of developed herbal pastille were being enhanced and found to be rich in antioxidants and accepted by the panellists.

Cendol is a typical beverage product which is much popular among children and adults. A usual colour of cendol is green. Concern for some consumers of the colours found in cendol is a produced by artificial colorant that may have a negative impact for consumen. The butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea L.). pigmetns, antocyanin, can be used as alternative for natural food coloring. This research aims to determine the influence addition of the butterfly pea extracts to proximate value, antocyanin total, antioxidant activity, and organoleptic test such as the color, flavor, aroma, and texture. The product of cendol was made from various the addition of 0.25 g, 0.50 g, and 0.75 grams flowers extract. The result showed that cendol with addition of 0,75 g flower extract was the higest total antocyanin content (235,24 mg/L) which had moisture content 82,34%, ash content 1,10%, protein 2,16%, fat 4,18%, carbohydrate 11,95%, and the result of organoleptic test were score of color 2,02; taste 1,94; aroma 1,80 and texture 1,94.

Background/Objectives: The utilization of natural colorant can improve food appeal. This study determined the potential of Clitoria ternatea flower extract as a substitute for synthetic colorants. Methods: The researchers prepared gummy candies using 100mL aqueous extracts from various weight samples of C. ternatea flowers. Fifty candy eaters with different age brackets were randomly chosen as respondents of this study. The respondents evaluated through the sensorial method the different treatments in terms of taste, texture, color, smell, appearance, and overall palatability using a nine-point scale hedonic scale. The researchers compared the age brackets using the analysis of variance. Findings: Results showed that aqueous extract of Treatment 3 (30 grams) has the highest total weighted average mean (TAWM) of 7.78 level of acceptability with a “Like Very Much” description, followed by the TAWM of 6.57 of Treatment 4 (40 grams) with “Moderately Like” description. In comparison, Treatment 1 (10 grams) has the lowest TAWM of 2.97 with a description of “Dislike Moderately.” The high level of acceptability implies that C. ternatea flower aqueous extract improves the color and appearance of the gummy candies. This study further shows no significant difference in acceptability among the respondents when grouped into age brackets. The researchers conclude that the aqueous flower extract of 30g C. ternatea improved the color and appearance of the gummy candies. Furthermore, it could be accepted by the candy consuming public of various ages. Novelty/Applications (30): The utilization of C. ternatea flower aqueous extract as a colorant improves the acceptability of commercial gummy candies. The use of alternative safe, natural colorants promotes healthy living and sustainable candy production. Chrysanthemums possess no metabolic pathway to synthesize delphinidin because of the lack of endogenous F3'5'H gene encoding the key enzyme in its biosynthetic pathway; therefore, there are no blue or blue-purple chrysanthemums occurring naturally. Currently, the introduction of exogenous F3'5'H into chrysanthemums is an efficient method for breeding bluish chrysanthemums. In this study, we explored the effects of the introduction of mutant CmF3'H (generated via site-directed mutagenesis, T485S, CmF3'Hm) and exogenous Osteospermum hybrid F3'5'H (OhF3'5'H) genes combined with Clitoria ternatea A3'5'GT (CtA3'5'GT) on delphinidin synthesis in chrysanthemum. Among the F3'5'H transgenic lines, those overexpressing endogenous CmF3'Hm could not generate blue flower color, although red color was changed to light pink due to CtA3'5'GT function. Meanwhile, OhF3'5'H introduction promoted the accumulation of delphinidin and its derivatives in chrysanthemum, changing the flower color from red-purple to purple-violet. These results indicate the applicability of exogenous OhF3'5'H and CtA3'5'GT transformation for promoting delphinidin synthesis during the molecular breeding of violet/blue chrysanthemums.

Butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) is a flowering plant from the Fabecea family that can grow vines. Butterfly pea flower are known to have chemical components that can act as antioxidants. This study aims to predict the potential of active compounds from methanol extract of butterfly pea flower in inhibiting reactive oxygen species (ROS) based on bond affinity (∆G), the value of Root Mean Square Deviation (RMSD) and their interactions. The method used was a computational method with in silico technique. The software used was Autodock Vina with visualization using the Biovia Discovery Studio Visualizer 2020. The enzyme receptor was NADPH Oxidase (NOX) obtained from Protein Data Bank and the test ligands were a chemical compound from methanol extract of butterfly pea flower. The results of the in silico study showed that the NO had a innate ligand, namely the GTP ligand which has a ∆G value of -7.3 kcal/mol, an RMSD value of 3.1111 Å and the interaction with the receptor that involves the presence of hydrogen bonds. Based on the results of the analysis of 11 test ligands, the chemical component of caffeine was predicted to have the most potential in inhibiting ROS compounds with a value of ∆G -5.4, RMSD value of 1.328 Å and had the same amino acid residue in hydrogen bonding, namely ASP118, and GLY15. The study has been made to investigate the potential of phytochemicals from clitoria ternatea -inositol and quercetin as inhibitors of glutamate receptors. Clitoria ternatea (L.) is a medicinal leguminous plant and is cultivated to cater the need of herbal industries and asthetic purposes. The unavailability of steady molecular marker impedes the genetic improvement of C. ternatea. In the present study, transferability of 98 pairs of Cajanus spp. specific SSR primers were assessed among 14 genotypes of C. ternatea, varied for their flower color, floral architecture and bio-metabolite (taraxerol and delphinidin) content, and out of them 43 had successfully amplified the fragments. Among them, 36 pairs of primers showed 100% transferability, whereas rest seven varied from 42.86 to 92.85% transferability. The transferable 43 pairs of SSR primers generated 196 alleles across the 14 genotypes and the AMOVA analysis showed moderate genetic variation (55.1%) among the genotypes of C. ternatea, which was also reinforced by Nei’s genetic distance and gene identity estimates derived haplotype matrix. Similarly, both the principal coordinate analysis and dendrogram grouped these 14 genotypes of C. ternatea into two major clusters based on SSR allele distribution and frequency, and the clustering pattern is in accordance with petal color but in contrast to floral architecture. MCheza based outlier analysis revealed 16 alleles for balancing selection, which are putatively involved in the maintenance of genetic polymorphism in C. ternatea. Moreover, the estimates of molecular diversity and bio-metabolite content revealed the possible use of these genotypes in future breeding programme of this species.

A new norneolignan derivative, clitorternalactone (1), has been isolated from the stems of Clitoria ternatea, together with six known compounds, clitorienolactone A (2), myricetin 3-glucoside (3), quercetin 3-glucoside (4), kaempferol 3-glucoside (5), taraxerol (6), and taraxerone (7). The structure of the new compound 1 was determined through spectroscopic and MS analyses. Among the isolates, compound 1 exhibited cytotoxicities with IC50 values of 2.54 ± 0.23, 3.68 ± 0.17, and 4.05 ± 0.43 μM, respectively, against DLD-1, CCRF-CEM, and IMR-32 cell lines. In addition, clitorternalactone (1), clitorienolactone A (2), quercetin 3-glucoside (4), and kaempferol 3-glucoside (5) showed potent inhibition with IC50 values of 3.05 ± 0.12, 5.44 ± 0.46, 10.20 ± 0.69, and 13.57 ± 0.36 μM, respectively, against LPS-induced NO generation.

Introduction: Butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) is a vine that has various colors such as pink, light blue, white, and purple. This plant is commonly used as a food coloring and ornamental plants. Butterfly pea has pharmacological potential, among others, as high antioxidants. The antioxidants of the butterfly pea show much higher activity than other flowers. Antioxidants are substances that can prevent the occurrence of Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), which is currently increasing in incidence and mortality due to AKI reaching 23.9% in adults and 13.8% in children. Aim of study: This article aims to discuss the potential of butterfly pea extract (Clitoria ternatea) as a preventative for Acute Kidney Injury (AKI). Method: The research method used is the literature search technique on 20 articles from the Google Scholar database. Results and Discussion: The results of the literature search show that the butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) has antioxidant compounds that have the potential to prevent the occurrence of acute kidney injury (AKI). Butterfly pea extract has the potential to reduce levels of urea, serum creatinine, reduce levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and increase levels of glutathione, catalase, and superoxide dismutase (SOD). The antioxidant activity of flavonoids and tannins in butterfly pea extract was found to have a nephroprotective effect against exposure to toxic substances. Conclusion: The conclusion from this literature search is that the antioxidant content contained in butterfly pea extract can be a good alternative as a nephroprotector to prevent AKI.

This research focused on biosynthesis of silver and gold nanoparticles using Clitoria ternatea flower extracts under the ultrasound-assisted method. The synthesized nanoparticles were detected by UV-Vis spectrophotometric analysis, x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscope. The effect of ultrasound method on physicochemical properties of the nanoparticles was compared to the use of reflux method. The influence of the character on biological activity of the nanoparticles were tested for their antibacterial activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria. Chemical activity of the nanoparticles was also evaluated as antioxidant by using radical inhibition by using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radicals (DPPH) assay. The results showed that Clitoria ternatea flower exhibited reduction capability to form nanoparticles with the particle size ranging at 18-50 nm. In general, the ultrasound produces smaller particle size compared with reflux method for both silver and gold nanoparticles. The smaller particle size obtained from the ultrasound-assisted method compared to the Reflux method was found to give higher antibacterial activity toward tested bacteria. The nanoparticles demonstrated the antioxidative activity as shown by the DPPH inhibition at more than 50 %. The results suggest that the use of Clitoria ternatea flower extracts as reducing agent and ultrasound-assisted synthesis are fit as a green method for the synthesis of silver and gold nanoparticles.

Mosquitoes have always been a human health threat; the major global health problems caused by them are malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, and Zika as well as several other vector-borne outbreaks. The major problems in controlling these vectors borne diseases are related to resistance to eradication measures. Different classes of insecticides used for controlling public health have raised the concern of resistant problems with mosquitoes and environmental pollution caused by the control measures. Thus, a search for alternative natural compounds is necessary for solving the insecticidal resistance problem using pesticides in the larval stage of vector development as well as creating a chemical-free environment for a healthy society. Hence, the major focus of this study is to identify the larvicidal mechanisms, metabolite, antioxidants, and chemical compounds and elucidate their structures from C. ternatea flower and to test their efficacies against early 4th instar larvae of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Clitoria ternatea flowers were collected from the garden of the Faculty of Medicine in International Quest University, Ipoh, Perak, and thence used for crude extraction. Further on, the metabolite test, antioxidant test, and chromatography techniques were conducted to identify the chemical composition of extracts and their chemical structures were identified using GCMS-QP2010 Ultra (Shimadzu). Next, the extracts were evaluated against the early 4th instar larvae of Aedes mosquito vectors following the WHO procedures for larval bioassays. The larvicidal activity of Clitoria ternatea flower extracts evidently affected the early 4th instar larvae of Aedes mosquito vectors. The highest larvicidal activity was observed against the early 4th instar larvae of Aedes aegypti with the LC50 and LC95 values of 1056 and 2491 mg/L, respectively. Meanwhile, the larvae bioassay test for Aedes albopictus recorded the LC50 and LC95 values of 1425 and 2753 mg/L. Moreover, the results for nontarget organism test on guppy fish, Poecilia reticulata, showed no mortalities with flower extracts at 2500 mg/L, hence posing no toxic effects on fish. In this study, we have found a total of 16 chemical compounds and 6 chemical compounds have been reported to possess direct insecticidal, larvicidal, and pupicidal effects. Six chemicals with insecticidal properties were found to be glycerin, 2-hydroxy-gamma-butyrolactone, neophytadiene, n-hexadecanoic acid, cis-vaccenic acid, and octadecanoic acid with a total of 28.7% efficacy. Clitoria ternatea flower extracts also showed different types of phenols such as anthocyanins, flavonoids, and tannins. Our findings showed that the crude extract of Clitoria ternatea flower bioactive molecules is effective and may be developed as biolarvicide for Aedes mosquito vector control. Furthermore, this study also provided a baseline understanding for future research work in the field of applications of Clitoria ternatea flower extracts for their long-term effects on human health such as a food additive, antioxidant, and cosmetic.

The use of wastewater (urine) as a fertilizer was shown to potentially reduce the campus wastewater load and contribute to saving in expensive wastewater treatment, while dealing with it as valuable resource. If one assumed that this wastewater fertilizer (arguably, one of the best agriculturally acknowledged fertilizers), was applied at odor appropriate and physiologically sustainable rates (Nitrogen Loading Rate (NLR) of up to 0.73 g N m-2 week-1 equivalent to 104.28 mL urine m-2 week-1 applied for 16 weeks) and considered total available area for potential green walls, it could be stated that the entire urine stream generated daily on campus (varying from 2.2 to 4.5 m3) could be accommodated on campus green walls as a valuable resource with significant benefits. In the studies on monitored plant physiological parameters under various conditions, it was observed that urine fertilizer positively affected to the food production, inflorescences and health of butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) plant as well as could say that it was the most suitable plant for green wall. Further integration of urban wastewater management and agriculture (urban food production) into this scenario can make it even more attractive and economically sustainable.

Clitoria ternatea or commonly known as 'Butterfly pea' has been used traditionally in Ayurvedic medicine in which various parts of the plants are used to treat health issues such as indigestion, constipation, arthritis, skin diseases, liver and intestinal problems. The flowers of C. ternatea are used worldwide as ornamental flowers and traditionally used as a food colorant. This paper reviews the recent advances in the extraction and biological activities of phytochemicals from C. ternatea flowers. The application of maceration or ultrasound assisted extraction greatly increased the yield (16-247% of increase) of phytochemicals from C. ternatea flowers. Various phytochemicals such as kaempferol, quercetin and myricetin glycosides as well as anthocyanins have been isolated from C. ternatea flowers. Clitoria ternatea flower extracts were found to possess antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic and antidiabetic activities which are beneficial to human health. Clitoria ternatea flower is a promising candidate for functional food applications owing to its wide range of pharmacotherapeutic properties as well as its safety and effectiveness.

The study was conducted for 3 months from March to June 2013, using nine (9) male Bali cattle aged 2.5 - 3.5 years or average 3.0 years old based on dental estimates. The initial body weight range was 227-290 kg or an average of 257.40 ± 23.60 kg. Livestock was raising carried out in the Bero Sembada Farmers Group, Laen Manen District, Belu Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. The method used was an experimental method with treatments adjusted for habits of breeders in fattening cattle, which included feed management, housing, and health. The type of feed given during the study was Centrosema pubences, Clitoria ternatea, Fresh Zea mays straw, Pennisetum purpuphoides, Leucaena leucocephala, natural grass, Pennisetum purpureum and Sesbania grandiflora. The variables measured in this study include the color of the meat and fat. Measurement of the color of meat and fat using the standard color of meat and fat issued by the Indonesian National Standardization Agency (SNI: 3932: 2008, Regarding Quality Standards for Carcass and Meat of Beef Cattle). The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistical procedures. The results of the study showed that male Bali cattle fattened with forage produced a meat color score average of 9.00 or dark red color, while the average fat color score produced was 5.33 or yellowish-white color. It can be concluded that the characteristic color of meat from male Bali cattle fattened with forage on smallholder farms is dark red, while the color of fat is yellowish-white.

Type of feed given during the study was Centrosema pubences, Clitoria ternatea, jerami Zea mays segar, Pennisetum purpuphoides, Leucaena leucocephala, natural grass, Pennisetum purpureum and Sesbania grandiflora. Variables measured consumption and digestibility energy and N, energy and N Balance, NNU and biological value. Data were analyzed with descriptive analysis procedures. The results showed that the kinetic energy (Mcal/kg/head/day) is the energy consumption of 30.657; energy feses, undigested and urine, respectively 10.136; 20.522 and 1.026, as well as energy Balance 19.496. Meanwhile, consumption of N is 169 000 g/head/day ; excretion of N feses, urine and N digested, respectively 50, 20 and 119, as well as Balance N 104 g/head/day. While net nitrogen utilization and biological value of nitrogen is 58.580% and 83.194%. Can be concluded that male Bali cattle finishing phase in fattening using a feed single forage the improve energy-nitrogen intake and digestibility, resulting a positive nitrogen Balance and energy, as well as net nitrogen utilization and biological value protein feed is high enough.

Clitoria ternatea is a twining herbal medicinal plant. It has pharmacological activity as antioxidant, anticancer and anti depressant. Extracts of C ternatea flowers were used as a component of cosmetics. The aim of this research is to formulate and develop micellar based water with variation concentration of amphiphilic polymer. Results showed that formulation containing amphiphilic polymer 1% (F5) is the most stable, clearly, particle size distribution of 46,67 nm and zeta potential -18,4 mV was obtained. Conclution, extracts of C ternatea flowers successfully formulaed to micellar based water, antioxidant activity (IC 50 ) of 1,30 mg/ml was obtained.

Telang flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) contains phenolic compounds which can act as antioxidants by donating hydrogen so as to stabilize the lack of electrons in free radicals. This study aims to determine the antioxidant potential of telang flower ethanol extract by looking at the IC50 value. Telang flowers were extracted by maceration method using 70% ethanol solvent. The potential for antioxidants was determined by the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) method with a comparison of vitamin C which had been shown to have the potential of free radicals which were very potent. The results showed the IC50 value of telang flower ethanol extract was 41.36 ± 1.191 μg / mL, based on that value the telang flower extract from the Sleman area was in the very potent category so that it could be developed as a source of antioxidants from natural ingredients.

Clitoria ternatea L. is a plant species that can be used in food and pharmaceutical industry. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different plant spacing on the productivity and quality of butterfly pea grown on grey soil in Thu Duc, Ho Chi Minh City. Six treatments correspond to plant spacing of 80 x 15 cm, 80 x 20 cm, 80 x 25 cm, 80 x 30 cm, 80 x 35 cm and 80 x 40 cm. The results showed that the highest flower amount (296.8 flowers/plant) was obtained with butterfly pea planted at the spacing of 80 x 15 cm, commercial flower weight (7.86 g/100 flowers), theoretical yield of fresh flower (1,779.0 kg/1,000 m2, actual yield of fresh flower (841.9 kg/1,000 m2), theoretical yield of commercial flower (194.6 kg/1,000 m2 and actual yield of commercial flower (89.0 kg/1,000 m2. The stability of anthocyanins is greatly affected by pH and temperature, and thus their application in food products is limited. This study was aimed to develop an antibacterial food colorant using anthocyanin from Clitoria ternatea flowers by applying microencapsulation technology. Maltodextrin was used as a carrier agent in the spray drying process. The anthocyanin microcapsule was durable to the light exposure up to 21 days, and the best color stability was observed between the temperature range of − 20 °C to 4 °C. However, the color was sustained with approximately 50% of the stability index after 1 day exposure at 80 °C and 180 °C. On disk diffusion assay, the anthocyanin microcapsule manifested a broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against Gram-bacteria. According to minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) assay, anthocyanin microcapsule exhibited bactericidal activity on all test bacteria, with the lowest MIC and MBC observed on Escherichia coli. The application of anthocyanin microcapsule on muffins has shown a significant inhibitory activity on foodborne bacteria. This study revealed the potential of C. ternatea anthocyanin microcapsule as a bio-preservative, which can prolong the shelf life of baked food products.

Clitoria ternatea is often known as butterfly pea plant by the natives and is one of the major plants used in Ayurveda and traditional medicine worldwide. It is also used in food and cosmetic industries for various purposes. In this study, methanol leaf extract of Clitoria ternatea was studied for its antibacterial and in vitro anticancer study against human promyelocytic leukemia cells (HL60). Secondary metabolites like alkaloids, phlobatannin, triterpenoids, flavonoids, lipids, steroids, terpenoids, tannins and glycosides are identified in the extract by phytochemical screening. Leaf extract showed the presence of ethers and carboxylic acid groups (GCMS analysis). The leaf extract showed resistance against Salmonella typhi. Thus, from this study it can be concluded Clitoria ternatea leaves methanol extract has bioactive compounds showing anticancer activity against HL60 cells.

In Mexico, the nutritional properties of tropical legumes are not widely known. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the nutritional value of Arachis pintoi, Clitoria ternatea, Macroptilium atropurpureum and Stylosanthes guianensis. Crude protein (CP), crude fiber (CF), ether extract (EE), ash (ASH), acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), crude lignin (CL), in vitro digestibility of dry matter (IVDDM) and in situ digestibility DM (DISDM). The samples were collected in the experimental plots of the National Institute of Forest, Agricultural and Livestock Research, Veracruz state, Mexico. The evaluations were carried out in the facilities of the Zootechnics Department, Autonomous University Chapingo, State of Mexico, Mexico. Each species was evaluated, with three repetitions and each repetition was considered the experimental unit, resulting in twelve observations per variable. The means were separated using the Tukey test (p< 0.05). Arachis pintoi showed the highest percentages of CP (25.2%), ASH (9.0%), IVDDM (83.2%) and ISDDM (88.0%), and the lowest values of NDF (32.8%), ADF (26.9%) and CL (5.5%). Macroptilium atropurpureum showed the lowest percentages of CP, IVDDM, IVDDM and ASH (6.4%), and the highest values of NDF (50.9%), ADF (37.6%) and CL (11.8%). The other legumes showed intermediate or low values of all variables. Therefore, based on chemical composition and, in vitro and in situ dry matter digestibility, Arachis pintoi was the species with the best nutritional value.

Telang flowers (Clitoria ternatea, L) and pandan leaves (Pandanus paradisiaca) are plants that contain phytochemical components that are able to block sunlight from exposing the skin. While Virgina Coconut Oil (VCO) is able to moisturize and soften the skin. This study aims to determine the best formulation in protecting sunlight in application to the skin, as well as knowing the physical and chemical characteristics of skin lotion. This research uses an exploratory method with 2 treatments and 3 replications. The treatment is the addition of telang flower extract and pandan leaf extract to the VCO skin lotion. Evaluation is carried out on the physical and chemical properties and the level of panelist preference. The results showed different results from the two formulations, the highest protection value to the sun was the addition of telang flower extracts expressed by SPF 20.64, the antioxidant activity of 81.66%, pH of 6, 0.012% free fatty acids, a specific gravity of 0.94, 34880 cP viscosity, 65.25% stability, 6.0 cm spreadability, total plate count of 1.3 x 10-10 cfu / ml.

Clitoria ternatea flowers are known as butterfly pea flowers which contain many bioactive compounds and can be found in tropical countries. However, the bioactive compounds are easily lost when exposed to various environmental conditions. Encapsulation technologies are introduced to provide maximum protection to the encapsulated bioactive compounds. The main objectives of this study were to determine the physicochemical properties of C. ternatea flowers encapsulated in gelatine prepared using different encapsulating methods and the microbiological properties of the best encapsulating methods for C. ternatea flowers with gelatine. In this study, the moisture contents for ultrasonic spray dried powders recorded the lowest (5.94±0.44%) while samples of convection oven recorded the highest (14.33±1.30%). However, the ultrasonic spray dried powders demonstrated the highest total flavonoid contents, but convection oven dried powders showed the lowest. The results for total anthocyanin contents were similar to total flavonoid contents. The highest encapsulation efficiency based on anthocyanin contents was found in freeze dried powders (95.75±0.24%). These results showed the same antioxidant activity (DPPH assay) with the highest percentage inhibition of freeze dried powders and the lowest percentage inhibition of ultrasonic spray dried powders. The phytochemical functional group that revealed from Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopic (FTIR) analysis also indicate the presence of high amount of phenolic compounds in freeze dried powders although with ‘collapse building’ shape with fibrillary structure. The freeze dried powder showed the highest L* value (45.62±0.54), yet ultrasonic spray dried powders highest a*, b* and C* value. Thus, the analysis for microbial properties was carried out on freeze dried powders as freeze dryer was chosen as the best encapsulating methods. The freeze dried powders showed inhibition against gram positive and gram negative bacteria such as Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica and fungi such as Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans. The current study demonstrated the potential of using gelatine to encapsulate technique to retain antioxidant compounds in gelatine encapsulated C. ternatea flowers. This finding provides useful information on the use of different encapsulated methods for the development of functional food products for gelatine encapsulated flowers of C. ternatea.

An anthocyanin color pigment result from butterfly pea flower maceration has been done. This study aims to determine the effect of time variation in the maceration of anthocyanin butterfly pea flower extract and the stability of butterfly pea flower extract as an indicator of acid-base titration. Color pigment levels were determined quantitatively with a UV-Visible spectrophotometer. The anthocyanin levels obtained during the duration of maceration 5 days in a row resulted from 4.3915%, 5.9869%, 7.3970%, 8.8995%, and 10.2864%. While the anthocyanin levels using a differential pH method were 14.2775 mg/L and 14.9455 mg/L with % RPD value was 4.57%. The results of the study stated that the indicators of the butterfly pea flower crown extract can be a substitute for the synthetic phenolphthalein indicator that has been used.

All part of the butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) plant reported having a various positive effect on human health. The blue petal, in particular, shows a wide range of functional activity including as an antioxidant, antidiabetic, antiobesity, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antibiotic. The hydrophilic phase of butterfly pea flower extract contains flavonol glycosides, anthocyanins, flavones, flavonols, phenolic acids, and cyclotides. Meanwhile, the terpenoids, alkaloids, and fatty acids were found in the lipophilic phase of butterfly pea flower extract. The proven health benefits and the wide range of the type of bioactive compounds promote butterfly pea flower as the source of functional food and nutraceuticals. However, a series of intensive research, including the clinical trial, is still needed.

This work is devoted to the study of the effect of Clitoria ternatea L. decoction for energy and carbohydrate metabolism in conditions of increased physical activity, the analysis of possibilities carbohydrate and lipid metabolism markers correcting in a model of experimental hyperphagia and experimental diabetes, and the efficiency of the stabilization of liver injury and lipid peroxidation markers in rats in an experimental model of chronic alcohol intoxication. It’s established that Clitoria ternatea L. has a stabilizing effect on carbohydrate metabolism in rats with experimental diabetes and hyperphagia, exhibits antioxidant and hepatoprotective effect in rats with experimental alcoholic liver, comparable to the action of classical hepatoprotector «Hepsil-Rn», has adaptogenic effect in experimental model of physical activity, comparable to the energy drink «Burn». The effect of the prepatation tested was more pronounced under alloxan diabetes than the effect of the anti-diabetic «Sadifit» collection. The results obtained may be due to the presence of flavonoids, ascorbic acid, tannins and unsaturated fatty acids, exhibiting an antioxidant effect, as well as glycosides, terpenes and diterpenes, contributing to increased permeability of cell membranes for glucose.
