This study quantified the effect of weeding frequency and weeding schedules on weeding operation time in a sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) plantation stand. A weeding operation time estimation model was developed; then the cumulative weeding operation time after six growing seasons was simulated using the developed model. The developed model included weed height, relative height of weeds to sugi, and initial planting density. The simulated cumulative weeding operation time decreased approximately 6% for each one-treatment decrease in weeding frequency. Under a three-treatment weeding frequency scenario, the simulated cumulative operation time when weeding was conducted during non-consecutive years was longer than that when weeding was conducted during three consecutive years. The results suggest that carrying out weeding treatment during consecutive years is the more effective for reduction of weeding costs. We conclude that weeding schedule as well as weeding frequency must be considered for reduction of weeding operation time.

This study investigated the effect of weeding on the height growth of planted sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) saplings in southwestern Japan. First, we developed stand-level sugi and weed annual height growth models that accounted for tree spacing, slope aspect, and mean sugi height at the end of prior growing season and mean weed height just after weeding. Then, we simulated sugi heights after the sixth growing season under 64 different weeding schedules, using the developed model to examine the effects of the weeding frequency and the timing of weeding. The selected model for sugi height growth was expressed in terms of mean sugi height, mean weed height, slope aspect, and the relative height of weeds to sugi. We quantified the differences in growth responses between Cryptomeria japonica and Chamaecyparis obtusa trees in approximately 0.1-ha group selection openings in southern Japan. We measured the position, height (H), and diameter at ground level (D) of 6- and 13-year-old C. japonica and C. obtusa trees that were planted in two respective openings. The annual H and D growth of C. japonica increased until trees were 10 and 8 m, respectively, distant from the nearest edge of the opening. For C. obtusa, the annual H and D growth increased slightly until the trees were 6 m distant from the nearest edge, but they did not significantly differ between 6 and 18 m distant from the nearest edge. While the shortest distance from the edge explained 63% and 50% of the variationsal H and D growth, respectively, of C. obtusa. Estimation of the current successional status of long-lived coniferous forests is difficult especially after several hundred years of human disturbance. However, in Cryptomeria japonica forest on Yakushima Island, the stumps generated by logging activities from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries remain almost intact without intense rotting. From an inventory of these stumps and long-term monitoring of current stands for more than 25 years, we estimated the forest condition before logging and evaluated the current status of secondary succession. The size structure of Cr. japonica stumps suggested the stumps were composed of two different generations: the stumps of trees present before initiation of logging; and those of trees that regenerated after initiation of logging. Appropriate cutting cycles and annual allowable cuts are crucial to ensure sustainability of tropical selective logging, but there have been limited field data to verify long-term effects of different cutting cycles. This study reveals some evidence of forest degradation in selectively logged production forests of Myanmar, which are subject to inappropriate cutting frequency. We compared stand structure, commercial species composition, and incidence of illegal logging between two compartments with low (LCF; 1 time) and high (HCF; 5 times) cutting frequency over a recent 18 years. Prior to the latest cutting, LCF had 176 trees ha − 1 with an inverted-J shape distribution of diameter at breast height (DBH), including a substantial amount of teak ( Tectona grandis ) and other commercially important species in each DBH class. HCF prior to the latest cut had only 41 trees ha − 1 without many commercially important species. At HCF, nearly half the standing trees of various species and size were illegally cut following legal operations; this was for charcoal making in nearby kilns. At LCF, two species, teak and Xylia xylocarpa , were cut illegally and sawn for timber on the spot. More extensive and systematic surveys are needed to generalize the findings of forest degradation and illegal logging. However, our study calls for urgent reconsideration of logging practices with high cutting frequency, which can greatly degrade forests with accompanying illegal logging, and for rehabilitating strongly degraded, bamboo-dominated forests. To reduce illegal logging, it would be important to pay more attention on a MSS regulation stating that logging roads should be destroyed after logging operations.

The quality of diameter measurements for natural old-growth forest was evaluated by comparing repeated field measurements in a diameter census and tree-ring chronologies. The diameter census was repeated three times from 1973 at 10- to 19-year intervals in old-growth Cryptomeria japonica forests on Yakushima Island, Japan. The diameter growth in the three intervals between (1) first and second measurement (15–19 years), (2) second and third measurement (10–13 years), and (3) first and third measurement (28–30 years) were calculated. The diameter growth of each interval was also measured using tree-ring chronologies as a control. There were significant differences in paired t tests for diameter growth calculated from the diameter census data and from the tree-ring chronologies when the interval was 27 years. The average percentage differences (APDs) were relatively high for every interval and for all diameter classes, but the APDs for the 28- to 30-year intervals were better than the 10- to 19-year intervals. The APDs followed a rising trend with increasing diameter at breast height for every interval. In conclusion, data from an interval of >27 years is required for accurate estimation of diameter growth. Furthermore, extra care should be taken when measuring large diameter trees. The results from this study demonstrated the difficulty of using a diameter census in natural old-growth forest.

To clarify the effects of pre-logging forest type (hinoki plantation or lucidophyllous forest) and harvesting roads on tree regeneration, we examined the density of regenerated trees, physical properties of soil, and soil erosion 2 years after clear-cutting in northern Kyushu, Japan. The results showed that the density of regenerated individuals was affected by the forest type before logging and by road construction. In a clear-cut lucidophyllous forest, most of the recovering vegetation consisted of lucidophyllous species originating from advanced regeneration and seedlings of pioneer species. Conversely, since few individuals originated from advanced regeneration in the clear-cut hinoki plantation sites, recovery to climax stand conditions at these sites is likely to be delayed compared to areas of clear-cut lucidophyllous forest. Few regenerated individuals were observed on harvesting road surfaces. Similarly, vegetation recovery was limited on harvesting road surfaces and along the side-cast slopes adjacent to roads. The number of germinated seedlings of pioneer species was positively correlated with litter cover and thickness of the A horizon, and negatively correlated with the rate of apparent soil erosion. These findings indicated that the establishment of seedlings of pioneer species originating from buried seeds is affected by the thickness of the A horizon of the soil. Since the recovered vegetation and the leaf litter derived therefrom will inhibit soil erosion, we propose that advanced regeneration and soil physical properties immediately after clear-cutting are important for the rapid recovery of climax forest conditions and for the prevention of soil erosion after clear-cutting.

The lumber from sugi plantations in Japan displays large intra- and intertree variation in mechanical properties, even within a stand. These variations seem to be induced by the effects of the characteristics of cultivars as well as the effects of growth traits on mechanical properties. Therefore, the effects of growth traits on mechanical properties per cultivar need to be precisely examined. In this study, we focused on the effects of growth traits, especially height-to-diameter ratio (H/D ratio), on stem stiffness per cultivar. Sixteen cultivars were classified into three groups according to the relationships between stem stiffness and growth traits. In cultivars that showed a close correlation between growth traits and stem stiffness, it was assumed that stem stiffness could be controlled to a certain extent by silvicultural practices using the H/D ratio as an indicator. In cultivars that showed a weak correlation between growth traits and stem stiffness, selecting cultivars for the production of logs with higher mechanical properties seemed to be effective; in this study, Kumotoshi, Tanoaka, and Edanaga were found to be suitable. Tree age and site index may be important factors for producing wood with higher mechanical properties.

The mountain zone of Yakushima Island is covered with a mixed conifer-broadleaved forest dominated by old-growth Cryptomeria japonica (L.f.) D. Don trees. Even though Yakushima Island has been frequently struck by typhoons with wind velocities exceeding 55 m s−1, the Cr. japonica trees in the mountain zone have survived for thousands of years without fatal damage. To evaluate the effect of storms on tree growth, the relationships between the stem diameter at breast height (DBH) and the heights of Cr. japonica and coexistent tree species were investigated. Two models based on an expanded allometric equation and a discontinuous piecewise allometric equation, respectively, to represent DBH–height relationships were evaluated. In all plots, the DBH–height relationship of Cr. japonica was discontinuous between small DBH and large DBH individuals. The tops of the large DBH individuals of Cr. japonica were lost to strong winds. However in each instance, they occupied the highest position in the canopy, even if they had lost their tops. In contrast, the DBH–height relationships of subcanopy broadleaved species were continuous in many plots and the equilibrium heights of the dominant broadleaved species were similar and almost in the same order regardless of the canopy heights of Cr. japonica. These results revealed a constant vertical structure in the Cr. japonica forest on Yakushima Island. Our results demonstrate a vertical niche segregation in the forest under high wind pressures and such vertical structure enables effective use of forest space and increases the basal area density.

Spatial genetic structure and diversity of Cryptomeria japonica trees in old growth forest but selectively logged in approximately 300 years ago were analyzed using seven nuclear microsatellite markers and one chloroplast microsatellite marker. The individuals were sampled from a 4-ha natural forest plot (200 m × 200 m), which are consisted of three size classes including newly regenerated individuals such as regenerated individuals (REG class; stem diameter at breast height (DBH), 5–110 cm), remaining individuals (REM class; DBH ≥ 110 cm), and old stumps. Genetic diversity was similar between the three groups. These results suggest that genes from the old growth forest may have been passed on to the next generation (i.e., the current forest). Our objective was to investigate the differences in the spectral trajectory of the LANDSAT Thematic Mapper with stand volume development between Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi) and Japanese oak (Quercus mongolica var. crispula) in the experimental forest of Kyushu University, Hokkaido, Japan. We used nonlinear regression and a categorical variable to investigate the relationship between spectral reflectance factor and stand volume for each forest type. This research showed that the reflectance factor of Japanese larch and Japanese oak reached saturation and that both forest types had different spectral trajectories with stand development. In addition, we found that middle of development stage (stand volume was between 100 and 200 m3/ha) of each forest type had similarity in reflectance factor.

To detect non-thinned stands using very-high-resolution imagery, we assessed the relationship between the texture statistics derived from the gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and the density of Cryptomeria japonica stands. Because it was difficult to make the condition, like stand age and slope, consistent using real images and stands, simulated images were used. The results showed that each texture statistic had a unique pattern of variation, owing to stand density. Moreover, the amount of thinning affected the texture statistics. Because the values of the texture statistics varied according to the amount of it even if the stand density was the same, it was indicated that it was difficult to predict stand density using the texture derived from GLCM. Nevertheless, it should be possible to extract stands that have not been thinned using the texture statistics from very-high-resolution imagery, especially the homogeneity and the angular second moment.

下層植生からみた剥皮害の発生傾向を明らかにすることを目的として，熊本県球磨地域のヒノキ人工林77地点を対象に，剥皮害木本数と下層植生との関連性を検討した。まず，下層植生の繁茂状況をデジタルカメラを用いて撮影し，定量化した。また，下層植生の種組成データを基に，TWINSPANにより調査点を三つの植生タイプに分類した（スズタケタイプ，先駆種タイプ，常緑高木種タイプ）。次に，下層植生が繁茂している調査点では剥皮害木本数が低く抑えられているのか，ブートストラップ法により検討した。その結果，常緑高木種タイプの調査点においてのみ，下層植生の繁茂状況が剥皮害木本数の多寡に影響していたことが明らかとなった。これは，下層植生による物理的，視覚的な遮蔽効果によるものであると考えられた。

We derived an allometric model of the height–diameter curve for even-aged pure stands, which was a modification of the earlier model proposed by Inoue (2000a). An individual-dependent allometric equation was used as the height–diameter curve. Using the discriminant analysis method, all trees composed of a stand were stratified into upper and lower trees. It was assumed that both relationships between mean tree height H m and upper tree height H u and between mean DBH D m and mean DBH of upper trees D u could be described by the time-dependent allometric power equations. The height–diameter curve showed an average relationship between tree height and DBH of a given stand at a given time, and hence it could be assumed that the height–diameter curve contained two points (D m , H m ) and (D u , H u ). With these assumptions, we derived an allometirc model of height–diameter curve, which allowed the coefficients of the curve to be estimated from mean tree height and mean DBH. The proposed model was fitted to Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) data. The error ratio of the allometric model ranged from 2.254% to 13.412% (mean = 6.785%), which was significantly smaller than that of the earlier model. When the error of mean tree height was ±1.0 m or less, the effect of the error of mean tree height on the error ratio was comparatively small. This suggested that the error of ±1.0 m in mean tree height could be accepted in the estimation of height–diameter curve using the allometric model. These features enable us to combine the allometric model with Hirata’s vertical angle-count sampling or growth models. In conclusion, the allometric model would be one of the most practical and convenient approaches for estimating the height–diameter relationship of even-aged pure stands.

The objectives of this study were: (1) to relate the height growth pattern to the GIS-derived site index, (2) to construct various types of polymorphic height curves, and (3) to select the most accurate height curve for Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi). A total of 14 dominant trees were felled for stem analysis. Richards' function was first fitted to the height/age dataset recorded from stem analyses of 14 trees, and its parameters (i.e., A, k, and m) were then estimated for each sample tree. The relationship between parameter A and the GIS-derived site index was significant, while that of parameters k and m were not significant. The 12 height curve equation forms developed from the Richards' function were then fitted to the dataset consisting of 563 observations of height, age, and GIS-derived site index derived from 14 trees. All height curves were unbiased and provided an equally good fit. The shape of the height curves differed among sites of different site indices. These results indicated that Richards' function was sufficiently flexible to represent the polymorphic height growth pattern of Japanese larch. Finally, the best-fit height curve was selected so that accurate height growth predictions would be possible at any given age and site.

The objectives of this study were (1) to evaluate the effects of environmental factors derived from GIS on tree-height growth of Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi) and (2) to develop a best-fit regression model for its site index. Based on data from 40 sample plots situated in an even-aged (38 years), pure, and undamaged Japanese larch stand, multiple regression models for a site index of Japanese larch were constructed using environmental factors as independent variables. The average slope gradient, effective relief, distance from ridge, flow accumulation, degree of exposure, shading, solar radiation index, and gravitational water index were used as environmental factors and calculated on GIS using digital elevation model data. These factors were related to the Japanese larch site index through multiple-regression analysis. The result showed that the most effective factor for estimating site index was the degree of exposure. Through a backward stepwise procedure, the degree of exposure, shading, and average slope gradient were selected for a best-fit regression model. This model explained 72% of the variance in site index, with standard error estimates of 1.75 m. This strong relationship suggests that GIS-derived environmental factors can be used to predict site indices of Japanese larch.

霧島山系のモミ・ツガ天然林の再生方法として人工林を天然林へと再転換する方法に着目し，種子源の配置が人工林林床におけるモミ稚樹の定着可能性に与える影響を検証するために，ロジスティック回帰分析により稚樹の存在確率の予測を行った。天然林パッチおよび母樹個体という異なる種子源の情報を用いて回帰分析を行った結果，天然林内の母樹からの距離と母樹の胸高断面積を考慮した場合が最もあてはまりがよく，大径の母樹にきわめて近い場所に稚樹は定着しやすいことが明らかとなった。また，稚樹の存在を精度よく予測するためには母樹の個体レベルの情報が必要であり，再転換候補地の選定にあたってはこのデータを整備することが望ましいことが示された。
