Tree stock parameters and soil nutrient status were affected due to forest encroachment in the Madhupur Sal forest of Bangladesh from September 2015 to April 2016. The study was investigated through 120 sample plots of 10 m × 10 m in sizes taken randomly from three sites such as high, medium, and low encroached forest. Prior to objective, tree stock parameters were measured having a diameter at breast height (dbh) ≥ 10 cm and necessary soil samples were collected. The collected soil samples were analyzed in the laboratory to determine the organic matter, total N, available P, exchangeable K, available Ca, Mg, S, Fe, B and Zn. The results revealed that the tree stock parameters such as stand density, basal area and dbh were measured the highest (650 trees/ha, 30.17 m2/ha and 26 cm) in the low encroached forest and the lowest (75 trees/ha, 4.47 m2/ha and 21 cm) in the high encroached forest sites. Accordingly, the higher content of organic matter (1.60%), total N (0.18%), available P (12.97 ppm), exchangeable K (0.25 ppm), available Ca (3.38 ppm), Mg (1.47 ppm), S (20.34 ppm), Fe (234.06 ppm), B (0.68 ppm) and Zn (2.3 ppm) were found in soils from low encroached forest site and lower (0.65%), (0.09%), (8.09 ppm), (0.10 ppm), (1.09 ppm), (0.92 ppm), (10.60 ppm), (180.85 ppm), (0.28 ppm) and (1.22 ppm) in the high encroached forest site soils. Therefore, it can be concluded that tree stock parameters and soil nutrients status were remarkably affected due to the forest encroachment in the Madhupur Sal forest of Bangladesh.

Nodal explants of three accessions namely BD-101, BD-122 and BD-8001 of hyacinth bean (Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet) were cultured for four weeks on MS medium supplemented with different concentrations and combinations of NAA (0, 0.1 mgl-1) and BAP (0.5, 1.0 and 2.5 mgl-1) for plant regeneration. The highest shoot initiation was observed in 0.5 mgl-1 BAP while the lowest shoot initiation was found in 2.5 mgl-1 BAP with 0.1 mgl-1 NAA. Earlier shoot initiation was exhibited in 0.5 mgl-1 BAP with 0.1 mgl-1 NAA. The highest number of leaflets and higher shoot lengths were observed in MS medium. Comparatively higher number of shoots was found in BAP (0.5-2.5 mgl-1). The highest percentage of callus was initiated in medium supplemented with 1.0 mgl-1 BAP. Earlier callus initiation and larger callus size were found in combination of BAP (0.5-2.5 mgl-1) with 0.1 mgl-1 NAA. BD-122 cultured in MS medium was found superior for shoot regeneration through node culture. Four different concentrations of IBA (0.1-1.5 mgl-1) were used for rooting. The highest percentage (86.67 %) of rooting was found in MS medium containing 0.1 mgl-1 IBA at four weeks. Rooting frequency decreased with the increasing concentration of IBA. The accession BD-8001 had 99.60 % rooting in 0.5 mgl-1 IBA. The highest number of longest roots was exhibited in 0.1 mgl-1 IBA. Goats greatly influence the economic sustainability of rural communities. However, parasitic diseases, especially gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) are a major constraint on profitable small ruminants' production worldwide. During July- 2015 to June- 2016, we conducted a cross sectional study within seven topographic zones of Bangladesh to explore the level of infection and associated risk factors of GINs infections of goats. The study followed standard flotation and modified McMaster techniques. Among 1998 samples from goats; 1241 (62.1%) were found to be infected with one or more species of GINs by fecal examination for nematode eggs. The identified nematodes were strongyles (51.9%), Strongyloides sp. (19.0%) and Trichuris spp. (2.9%). By coproculture, we identified Haemonchus spp., Oesophagostomum spp., Trichostrongylus spp. and Bunostomum spp. in the different topographic zones. According to univariate analysis; young age, other breed than Black Bengal, animals in poor condition, backyard rearing system, muddy housing, illiterate farmers and rainy season were found significantly associated with GINs infections. Besides, other breed than Black Bengal, animals in poor condition, backyard rearing system, muddy housing and illiterate farmers were identified as the risk factors of GINs infections in goats. This is the first detailed epidemiological investigation of GINs of goats in Bangladesh. The epidemiological findings are expected to help formulate effective control strategies against GINs infections in goats by improving health status of animals, management system and education level of the farmers.

Brucella spp. are facultative intracellular bacteria causing chronic disease which may persist for the whole life of the affected organism. In animals brucellosis affects reproduction, fertility and reduces newborns survival and also milk production. The present research was carried out to estimate the prevalence and to identify the risk factors of brucellosis along with determination of genetic diversity in Bangladesh. In CCBS&DF (government farm) out of 191 cows the MRT prevalence (positive) was 7.85% and RBT prevalence (positive) was 7.33%. In Rangpur out of 238 cows the MRT prevalence (positive) was 1.88% and RBT prevalence is 1.56%. In Jamalpur out of 201 cows the MRT prevalence was 1.49% and RBT prevalence 0.05%. In Gaibandha out of 93 cows the MRT prevalence was 1.07% and RBT prevalence 0%. In Mymensingh out of 320 cows the MRT prevalence was 1.88% and RBT prevalence 1.56%. Among the five groups of cows the high prevalence of MRT and RBT prevalence was in Government Farm 7.85% and 7.33%. An experiment was conducted to determine the effective dose of formalin killed (FK) fowl cholera (FC) vaccines prepared with virulent avian Pasteurella multocida (PM 38) serotype 1 (X-73) collected from the laboratory of the Department of Microbiology and Hygiene, BAU, Mymensingh. To determine the effective dose of vaccine, 7 weeks old 30 pigeons were immunized and each group consists of 5 birds. The groups are represented by A, B, C, D, E and F. The birds belonging to groups (A-E) were vaccinated with different doses of vaccine, after two weeks of first, second immunization and challenge experiment, blood was collected from all vaccinated birds, and serum was analyzed to determine antibody titer against P. multocida by passive hemagglutination test (PHA). Mechanical intervention in crop production is increasing rapidly in Bangladesh. Researchers are finding ways to manage weeds in rice field using suitable mechanical devices instead of conventional hand weeding. A study was conducted to evaluate the field performance of BRRI (Bangladesh Rice Research Institute) power weeder compared to BRRI weeder and hand weeding in the farmers’ field at Rashidpur in Mithapukur upazila under Rangpur district during boro season of 2014-15. Three treatments: T 1 = BRRI weeder (BW), T 2 = BRRI power weeder (BPW) and T 3 = Hand weeding (HW) were used in the experiment. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) and replicated in four farmers’ plots. Rice variety BRRI dhan28 was selected for the experiment. The effective field capacity of BW and BPW was found to be 0.06 and 0.09 ha hr -1 , respectively. The weeding efficiency was the highest in HW (92%), followed by BPW (78%) and BW (73%). It was found that BW damaged the lowest number of plants (9%) compared to BPW (11%) during weeding operation, although the damaged plants recovered after a few days. BW and BPW reduced 74 and 85% of labor requirement in weeding operation compared to HW. The highest weeding cost was involved in HW (Tk. 4287 ha -1 ) compared to BW (Tk. 1103 ha -1 ) and BPW (Tk. 950ha -1 ). Weed control methods exerted insignificant effect on grain yield. BRRI power weeder and BRRI weeder reduced weeding cost, enhanced weed control and improved the labor efficiency without sacrificing grain yield. Purpose: An experiment was conducted at Field Laboratory of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University during April to July 2018 to compare the biomass yield potential, decomposition and nutrients release pattern of different dhaincha genotypes. Research Method: Six dhaincha accessions from three Sesbania species, viz. S. bispinosa (accession #05, 71, 77 and 109), S. cannabina (accession #28) and S. sesbsan (accession #81), were used as experimental materials. Dhaincha was cultivated with standard cultivation procedure following a randomized complete block design with three replications and incorporated with soil at 60 days after sowing. Findings: There are wide variations in biomass yield, crude fi bre and crude protein among the accessions. The amount of crude fibre may be used as a descriptor of taxonomic importance. Accession #28 (S. cannabina) produced a significantly higher amount of crude fibre compared to other accessions. Soil organic matter (SOM) and nutrient elements availability increased with the period of time and reached to a peak at 50 days after biomass incorporation (DAI) except K and S. The highest amount of SOM and N was recorded in accession #71 and the lowest in accession #81. The maximum amount of phosphorus and potassium was added by accession #05 and the minimum phosphorus and potassium by accession #28 and #81, respectively. The greatest amount of sulfur showed 5.25 ppm in accession #05 at 20 DAI and the smallest value 2.22 ppm in accession #28 at 60 DAI. Originality: It is evident from results that accession #71 can be recommended for cultivation in the farmer’s field for higher biomass yield and the maximum amount of nutrients release.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of simethicone against bloat in ruminants. The investigation was conducted in Potiya Upazila under the Chittagong district where routine veterinary services were in operation by the Community-based Dairy Veterinary Foundation (CDVF), Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh. The diagnosis of bloat in animals was done based on clinical history, clinical signs and examination of animals. A total of 90 ruminants (60 cattle, 10 sheep and 20 goats) affected with bloat were treated with simethicone containing two commercial products marketed in Bangladesh (One product such as Bloat Stop®, marketed by ACME Laboratories, Bangladesh and another imported product by other pharmaceutical company). For treatment, 1 gm simethicone in 100 ml solution in cattle and 200 mg simethicone in 20 ml solution in sheep and goats were administered once at a time. The efficacy of simethicone from two commercial products was evaluated on the basis of recovery rate of affected animals. The overall recovery rates in ruminants after treatment with Bloat Stop® and other commercial product were 80% and 76%, respectively. In cattle recovery rate was numerically higher (83%) when treated with commercial product than that of other product (80%). In sheep, recovery rate was numerically higher (80%) when treated with Bloat Stop® than that of imported product (60%). In goats, the recovery rate was 70% after treatment of bloat with both products. However, the recovery rates in ruminant did not differ statistically between two drugs used for treatment of bloat (p>0.05). Aims: This paper explores the properties of single layer particleboard produced from bamboo wastes and branches. Experimental: Three types of single layer particleboard i.e., branch-waste mixed particleboard (WBPB), bamboo branch particleboard (BPB) and bamboo wastes (shavings obtained during planning operation of bamboo) particleboard (WPB) were manufactured with 15% urea formaldehyde (UF) resin. Physical and mechanical properties of the manufactured particleboards were evaluated according to the ASTM D-1037 standard. Results: Results showed that the physical properties i.e., density, moisture content (MC), water absorption (WA), thickness swelling (TS), linear expansion (LE) and mechanical properties i.e. Original Research Article Alam et al.; AIR, 4(3): 203-211, 2015; Article no.AIR.2015.075 204 modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) of bamboo branch-waste mixed particleboard (WBPB) was better than bamboo branch particle board (BPB) and bamboo wastes particle board (WPB). It was found that the density of BPB, WPB and WBPB were 742, 846 and 1024 kg/m, respectively. Thickness swellings of BPB, WPB and WBPB after 24 hours of immersion were 32.33, 19.6 and 16.3%, respectively. Water absorption rate of BPB, WPB and WBPB particleboards were 81, 64.3 and 39.8%, respectively. Modulus of rupture of BPB, WPB and WBPB were 16.8, 18 and 21.6 N/mm 2 , respectively. Conclusion: All these three types of particleboard followed the American National Standard ANSI A208.1 requirements for physical and mechanical properties of particleboard.

Subclinical mastitis is an economically important disease of dairy cows and has a prominent place amongst the factors that limit milk production. This study was undertaken to determine the association of somatic cell counts (SCC) and occurrence of bacteria with SCM in smallholder dairy cows in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. A total number of 240 quarters milk samples from apparently healthy lactating cows were subjected to SCC using NucleoCounter ® SCC-100 ™ (Chemo Metec). A quarter was considered SCM positive if the quarter had SCC>100 x 10 3 cells/ml. All subclinical mastitis positive quarter milk samples were subjected to bacteriological examination and isolates were classified into major, minor, uncommon and mixed pathogens. The overall quarter-level prevalence of subclinical mastitis of dairy cows in Mymensingh district was 25% (95% CI, 19.52% to 30.48%). The most frequently isolated bacterial species were Staphylococcus aureus (18.33%) followed by coagulase-negative staphylococci (10%), Enterobacter spp. (6.67%), Escherichia coli (5%), Bacillus spp. (5%) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (5%). Different bacterial isolates were associated with 90% cases of subclinical mastitis as mono infections or mixed infections. Mono and mixed infections significantly influenced SCC and were the most prominent factors responsible for increasing SCC. Mean SCC was the highest for Bacillus spp. (713.67 x 10 3 cells/ml) followed by Enterobacter spp. (395.75 x 10 3 cells/ml), Escherichia coli (386.00 x 10 3 cells/ml), Staphylococcus aureus (373.82 x 10 3 cells/ml), coagulase-negative staphylococci (182.67 x 10 3 cells/ml) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (138.67 x 10 3 cells/ml). Country bean is a nutritious vegetable with commercial importance. Pod borer is a major pest of country beans in Bangladesh. Assessment of genetic variation among germplasm is a prerequisite for improvement. The study was conducted to evaluate the yield potential, pod borer resistance and genetic diversity of 20 country bean varieties. At first a field experiment was conducted with twenty cultivars to evaluate yield contributing characters and pod borer resistance. The data revealed that the variety Kaloputi showed the highest yield (2111.09g) of pods plant1. This variety (Kaloputi) had the highest number of pods plant1 (271), lowest percentage (3.08%) of infestation, highest number (1086.0) of seeds plant1 and highest dry seed yield over the other varieties. The variety BARI seem-5 showed the least performance in most of the parameters. Another experiment was conducted to find the genetic diversity among the 20 cultivars using SSR markers. The cluster analysis showed that the genotypes were divided into four groups. The cluster 1 was composed of seven BARI released varieties, cluster 2 was composed of two modern (IPSA seem2 and BARI seem8) and three local varieties (Khisamoti, Rifa and Goalgada), cluster 3 was constructed by six local and one modern variety (BARI seem9) and Cluster 4 consisted of only cultivar Mostofa. The wide variations in phenotypic and genotypic level and pod borer resistance observed among the country bean genotypes reveal that Bangladesh has a rich genetic diversity necessary for genetic improvement. An investigation was undertaken to determine the general clinical prevalence of diseases and disorders in cattle and goats at the Upazilla Veterinary Hospital, Mohammadpur, Magura during the period from January to December 2010. A total of 536 clinical cases (327 cattle and 209 goats) were recorded and analyzed. Diagnosis of each of the clinical cases was made on general examination, physical examination, clinical examination, microscopic examination and using common laboratory techniques. The clinical cases were divided into three groups on the basis of treatment required viz. (1) Medicinal, (2) Gynaeco-obstetrical and (3) Surgical cases. Among the three types of ruminant cases, medicinal cases constituted highest percentage (cattle 86.5% and goats 90.4%) in comparison to gynaeco-obstetrical (cattle 6.1% and goats 0.9%) and surgical (cattle 7.3% and goats 8.6%) cases. Among the medicinal cases, gastrointestinal nematodiasis (cattle 37.8% and goats 19.6%), diarrhoea (cattle 13.4% and goats 19.6%), fascioliasis (cattle 12.4% and goats 1.6%), paramphistomiasis (cattle 8.8% and goats 2.6%), fever (cattle 7.8% and goats 12.7%) were recorded major disease problems in cattle and goats. Among the gynaeco-obstetrical cases, retained placenta (cattle 30% and goats 50%) and repeat breeding (cattle 70% and goats 50%) were recorded as major gynaeco-obstetrical problems in cattle and goats. Abscess (cattle 45.8% and goats 5.6%), myiasis (cattle 20.8% and goats 20.8%), navel ill (cattle 12.5), urolithiasis (cattle 20.8% and goats 44.4%) and overgrown hoof (goats 33.3%) and gid disease (goats 5.6%) were recognized as the main disorders which required surgical interventions. The efficacy of hyperimmune serum for the treatment of Newcastle disease (ND) was evaluated in indigenous birds. A total of 20 indigenous birds (3 to 4 months old) were divided into three groups, namely group A (n = 9), B (n = 8) and C (n = 3). Birds of all the groups were infected orally with 0.2 mL (106.5EID50/0.1 mL) of virulent Newcastle disease virus (NDV). Birds of group A were treated with hyperimmune serum (raised in chickens against NDV) @ 2 mL/bird IM after 6 hours of infection before commencement of clinical signs. Birds of group B received two doses of hyperimmune serum, first @ 2 mL/bird IV after commencement of clinical signs and second @ 3 mL/bird IM 5 hours after first dosing. Birds of group C served as infected control. Birds of group A did not show any clinical signs of ND except one (11%). However, the only sick bird recovered after one repeat dosing of 1 mL hyperimmune serum. In group B, 87.5% birds survived with two birds having nervous signs. Therefore, it may be concluded that hyperimmune sera was effective in preventing morbidity and mortality due to ND in birds when administered before or after commencement of the clinical signs. Brucellosis is an important zoonoses causing signififant economic loss but is very often neglected in Bangladesh. Therefore, a survey was undertaken to investigate the seroprevalence of brucellosis in sheep of selected areas (Gaibandha sadar and Gobindagonj upazilas) in the Gaibandha districts of Bangladesh. A total of 206 sera samples were collected from sheep and were tested for presence of Brucella specific antibody by Rose Bengal Plate Test (RBPT) as screening test and the RBPT positive samples were further confirmed using indirect Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (i-ELISA). Information of sheep's age, sex, housing system, pregnancy status, abortion and reproductive disorder were collected using questionnaire. The overall seroprevalence of brucellosis in sheep was recorded as 3.39% in RBPT and 2.91% in i-ELISA. The prevalence of brucellosis in female sheep (3.41%) was higher than male (3.33%). The prevalence of brucellosis in sheep with abortion history was higher (4.34%) than the sheep with no abortion (3.08%). The highest prevalence of brucellosis (4.00%) was found in sheep keeping with others species such as cattle and goat compared to the sheep keeping alone (1.79%). The higher rate (4.59%) of Brucella antibody was recorded in sheep of 1-2 years of age. Brucellosis might be an important hinders for sheep production in Bangladesh. An In-house Indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed for the detection of serum antibody titre against Newcastle disease virus (NDV) and was compared its sensitivity and specificity with the commercially available NDV antibody detection ELISA kit (Biocheck®, USA). The reference NDV was purified by centrifugation, ultracentrifugation and by sucrose density gradient ultracentrifugation. This purified NDV was used for coating of 96-well flat bottomed microtitre plate and to raise hyperimmune sera (known) in Fayoumi chickens. The present research work was carried out to isolate and identify Newcastle disease virus (NDV) by using haemagglutination inhibition (HI) test and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay. A total of 160 clinical (blood, tracheal and cloacal swabs) and post-mortem (brain, lung, colon and spleen) samples were collected from chickens of two field outbreaks of Newcastle disease (ND) in 2006, one in a broiler (Cobb-500) farm of Mymensingh district and other one in a layer (Sonali) farm of Gazipur district. All the samples were inoculated onto 10-day-old embryonated chicken eggs through allantoic sac route and in the chicken embryo fibroblasts (CEFs) cell culture. The allantoic fluid (AF) of the dead embryos and the infected culture fluid (ICF) of the CEF were harvested at 48 and 96 hours of post-infection, respectively. The HI and RT-PCR were employed to detect NDV in tissue homogenates of all the clinical and post-mortem samples as well as laboratory samples (AF and ICF). Among the clinical samples, virus isolation rate was found higher from tracheal swab (90%) compared to those of cloacal swab (85%) and serum (65%). On the other hand, among the four different types of post-mortem samples, virus isolation rate was found higher in spleen (100%) compared to those of lungs (80%), colon (60%), and brain (80%) samples. In CEF cell culture system, the rate of virus isolation from all the aforesaid samples was found 100% with the exception of serum samples. The isolation rate of NDV was higher in CEF culture system (93.8%) compared to that of avian embryos (80%). Among the clinical and post-mortem samples, inoculum of only cloacal swab and colon showed HA and HI activities. The anti-NDV hyperimmune serum revealed complete inhibition of the 4 haemagglutination unit of each isolate of viruses isolated from broiler and layer chickens present in the laboratory samples (AF and ICF). The NDV specific primers used in the direct RT-PCR for genome detection of NDV showed equal sensitivity and specificity with the RNA extracted from the clinical, post-mortem and laboratory samples (AF and ICF) as with the genomic RNA of reference NDV. Higher rate of detection of NDV was recorded with RT-PCR assay than HI test. A total of 90 day-old broiler chicks of Cobb 500 strain with the history of vaccination of parent stock against Newcastle disease (ND) was divided into three groups (A, B and C). Birds of group A (n = 35) were used for the study of protection ability of MDA against NDV, the birds of group B (n = 45) were used for the measurement of humoral immune response in chickens following vaccination at different ages and birds of group C (n = 10) were used for the determination of persistence of maternally derived antibody. The level of antibody titre against NDV was determined by HI test. The protective potentiality of MDA and vaccine was determined by the rate of survivability of the chickens following challenge infection. It was observed that the MDA titre in day-old chicks was higher and gradually declined at minimal level at day 28. The MDA titre of 128 or above protected the birds following challenge infection with virulent NDV. There were significant decrease in HI titres of chickens which were vaccinated once at day 1 and day 7, and could not withstand challenge infection with virulent NDV. Single vaccination with BCRDV ® at day 14 triggered the production of antibody but could not provide complete protection to the birds. The birds which were boosted with the same vaccine 7 days and 21 days after primary vaccination produced better immune response. However, the birds which were vaccinated primarily at day 1 and boosted at day 7 could not withstand the challenge completely. Of the other regimens of twice vaccination, primary vaccination at day 7 and booster dosing at day 28 was found to be the best in terms of immune response and protection potentiality. Therefore, it may be concluded that (a) The MDA titre level of 128 or above is sufficient to protect broilers against challenge with virulent NDV,( b) Primary vaccination at day 7 followed by a booster dosing at day 28 may be followed for better immune response and protection against ND in broilers. A survey was carried out in some selected potato growing districts of Bangladesh during December to February 2011 to know the status of bacterial wilt of potato caused by Ralstonia solanacearum in terms of its incidence and severity. The results showed that the highest wilt incidence was recorded in Munshigonj (22.65%), followed by Nilphamari (19.98%) and the lowest incidence was recorded in Jamalpur (9.07%). The highest bacterial wilt severity was recorded in Munshigonj (3.80), while the lowest wilt severity was recorded in Jamalpur (2.90). A total of 44 isolates (R. solanacearum) were obtained from the wilted potato plant samples i.e. 20 from Munshigonj, 17 from Nilphamari and 7 from Jamalpur and the isolates were divided into three groups. The production of pink or light red colour with whitish margin on TZC medium by the bacterial isolates indicated all groups of R. solanacearum isolates were virulent. The results of pathogenicity test revealed that all groups of R. solanacearum isolates were able to cause wilt symptoms in potato plants and brown rot symptoms in potato tuber. On the other hand, all biochemical tests were used for the identification of R. solanacearum isolates. The biovar test using the oxidization of disaccharides (sucrose, lactose, maltose) and sugar alcohols (manitol, sorbitol and dulcitol) by R. solanacearum isolates confirmed that all groups of R. solanacearum isolates belong to biovar III. The race identification of R. solanacearum isolates by pathogenicity test on brinjal, tomato, tobacco and chilli indicating a narrow host range (only in potato) and were categorized in race 3. Therefore, the R. solanacearum isolates causing bacterial wilt of potato in Bangladesh were belonging to Biovar III and Race 3.

Respiratory system is the primary settlement place of opportunistic organisms and considered as chief carrier of common respiratory pathogens. The aim of the study was to know the opportunistic organisms present in the healthy subjects as well as subjects that were suffering from respiratory symptoms. The organisms were identified as per standard bacteriological protocol and pathogenicity tests of the identified organisms were performed in mouse model. Antibiotic sensitivity of the identified organisms was performed. The bacterial flora present in the throat swab of apparently healthy as well as subjects suffering from respiratory symptoms were: Staphylococcus spp. (39.44%) of which Coagulase positive Staphylococcus (21.13%) and Coagulase negative Staphylococcus (18.31%), Klebsiella spp. (19.72%), Pseudomonas spp. (15.49%), Proteus spp. (4.23%), E. coli (9.86%) and Bacillus spp. (11.27%). Among the isolates Staphylococcus, Klebsiella and Pseudomonas were the predominant species. Percentages of identified bacteria were higher in respiratory symptoms exhibiting individuals (53.52%) than apparently healthy individuals (46.48%). All coagulase positive Staphylococcus, Klebsiella spp. and Pseudomonas spp. isolated from respiratory symptoms' subjects were found to be pathogenic. The isolated bacteria were resistant to amoxicillin and ampicillin but sensitive to ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin. Isolated Pseudomonas spp. showed multidrugs resistant properties. The study provided information about the pathogenic organisms' present respiratory systems of apparently healthy as well as subjects suffering from respiratory symptoms. The pathogenic natures of the isolated organisms were determined to make aware of scientists as well as clinicians. Antibiotics sensitivity assays would provide information to the clinicians for the selection of appropriate antibiotics to treat their patients.

A study was undertaken to determine the immune response of eight different imported live NDV vaccines in broiler chickens in the Department of Microbiology and Hygiene, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from July to December 2008. A total of 55 broiler chickens (Ross breed) were divided into eleven groups such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 of which group 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 were vaccinated primarily with Nobilis® MA5+Clone30, Avipro® ND-IB HB1, Cevac® BIL, Newcastle-Bronchitis Vaccine Fortdodge® and Avipro® ND LaSota vaccine respectively at day 5 of age and secondarily with Nobilis® ND Clone 30, Avipro® ND LaSota, Cevac® New L, Newcastle Disease vaccine Fortdodge® and Avipro® ND LaSota vaccine respectively at day 21 of age by single eye instillation and 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 were vaccinated with the same vaccines respectively by double eye instillation following the same schedule. Group 11 was kept as unvaccinated control. Sera samples were collected after 10 days of each vaccination and at day 5, 15, 20, 31 of age from nonvaccinated control and subjected to HI test for the determination of antibody titres. Each bird received a dose of 0.2 ml of NVNDV (300 ELD 50 ). Body temperature, onset of clinical signs and mortality of birds (if any) were recorded daily. Blood samples were collected from the birds to determine the serum HI titre before and after infection. Faeces and various tissue samples (brain, lungs, kidney, colon, bursa of Fabricius, spleen and thymus) were collected daily following post-mortem examination of one bird from each sub-group to determine the presence of NDV along with their HA titre through inoculation into embryonated hen eggs. Some representative samples were also inoculated into chicken embryo fibroblast (CEF) cell culture for isolation of NDV. The highest body temperature (³108 0 F) was recorded in the birds of almost all the experimental groups between 48 and 72 hours of PI. Appearance of clinical sings was observed earlier (between 48 to 72 hours of PI) in parenterally infected birds than those of inoculated through natural routes. The shortest duration (>26-54 hours of PI) and longest duration (67-132 hours of PI) of death time recorded in birds those were inoculated through IV and oral routes of infection respectively. The research work was conducted to isolate and identify the microflora from apparently healthy caged parrots. A total of 45 samples (oral swabs, cloacal swabs and feces) were collected from five types of caged parrots (Gray cockatiels, Rose ringed parakeet, Alexandriane parakeet, Red breast parakeet and Blossom headed parakeet) of Dhaka Zoo during the period from April to August 2009. The samples were cultured on different bacteriological media and the bacteria were identified by their cultural and biochemical properties. All the isolates were allowed for antibiogram study. The bacteria isolated in this study from different types of caged parrots were E. coli (64.44%), Salmonella spp. (46.67%), Staphylococcus spp. (46.67%), Pasteurella spp. (33.33%), Proteus spp. (6.67%) and some unidentified Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Of these isolates, E. coli was the most frequent isolate. The frequency of Gram-negative bacteria was higher in this study. The percentage of bacterial isolates recovered from each type of parrots was almost similar. Irrespective of types of parrots, the higher percentage of different bacteria was isolated from cloacal swab (77.78%) followed by feces (75.56%). The 68.89% isolates were recovered from oral swab. All the suspected isolates of Salmonella spp. were confirmed by slide agglutination test using Salmonella polyvalent ‘O’ antiserum. Among the 21 Salmonella spp. isolated in this study, 4 (19.05%) isolates were identified as S. Pullorum when tested with specific antisera against S. Pullorum. The results of antibiotic sensitivity tests revealed that ampicillin and amoxicillin were completely resistant to E. coli and Pasteurella spp.; ampicillin to Proteus spp.; and furazolidone to Salmonella spp. and Pasteurella spp. However, the antibiotics of fluoroquinolone group such as ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin and enrofloxacin showed moderate to high sensitivity against almost all the bacterial isolates.
