The marine N cycle is driven mainly by microorganisms whose distribution can be shaped by mesoscale eddies. Recently, eddies containing oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) have been recognised as N-loss hotspots, complicating even more the calculations of the marine N budgets. As a contribution to this understanding, we investigated the effect of a cyclonic eddy confined in an oxygen-depleted basin on the distribution of the N-cycling communities. We measured hydrographic properties of the water column, nutrient concentrations, and the abundance of key genes involved in the processes of nitrification (archaeal and bacterial amoA), denitrification (nirS and nirK), dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia (DNRA; nrfA) and anammox (hzo) within the eddy. Our results indicated that the cyclonic circulation affected the distribution of nutrients and the abundance of amoA and nirS genes, whereas oxygen influenced the distribution of nirK, nrfA, and hzo genes. Additionally, the aerobic ammonium oxidation by archaea seems to be an important source of nitrite, which might fuel denitrifier, DNRA, and anammox communities in this basin. These findings along with the high N deficit in the OMZ suggest the existence of an active N cycling that might enhance the N-loss in this oxygen-depleted basin.

Antarctic microorganisms are characterized for living under extreme conditions such as low temperatures, and high UV-radiation, including and freeze-thaw stress derived from annual environmental changes. Microbial mats are successful microbial consortia in these extreme environments, yet much is unknown regarding their diversity and functional role in terrestrial polar regions. The bacterial diversity in microbial mats from Fildes Peninsula in Maritime Antarctica and their genetic potential for nitrogen acquisition has been explored in our laboratory. The results showed that microbial mats were clustered within two main groups according to their 16S rRNA genetic diversity, separating those collected nearby scientific stations from those in coastal plains. The later showed a lower relative proportion of Proteobacteria and a higher proportion of Cyanobacteria, Planctomycetes, and Thaumarchaeota, possibly due to physicochemical and biological factors associated with sea-land interactions. All microbial mats had a strong nifH genetic signal, mainly associated with Cyanobacteria and Proteobacteria, suggesting the relevance of both oxygenic and anoxygenic bacteria potentially involved in N-fixation. The capacity of Oscillatoriales and Acaryochloris marina to assimilate Nitrogen was also evidenced. This study showed the diversity and structure of microbial mats in the Fildes Peninsula and the importance of cyanobacteria in microbial mats based on their role for N2 fixation and N- assimilation.

Coralline algae are worldwide carbonate builders, considered to be foundational species and biodiversity hotspots. Coralline habitats face increasing pressure from human activities and effects related to Global Change, yet their ecological properties and adaptive responses remain poorly understood. The relationships of the algal microbiota with the mineral bioconstructions, as well as plasticity and resilience of coralline holobionts in a changing environment, are of particular interest. In the Gulf of California, Neogoniolithon trichotomum (Rhodophyta) is the main carbonate builder in tidal pools. We performed a multi-disciplinary assessment of the N. trichotomum microstructure using XRD, SEM microscopy and SR-FTIR spectromicroscopy. In the algal perithallus, magnesium-calcite and aragonite were spatially segregated and embedded in a polysaccharide matrix (rich in sulfated polysaccharides). Mg-calcites (18-19mol%Mg) were the main mineral components of the thallus overall, followed by iron carbonates related to dolomite (ankerite) and siderite. Minerals of late evaporitic sequences (sylvite and bischofite) were also present, suggesting potential halophilic microenvironments within the algal thalli. The diverse set of abundant halophilic, halotolerant and oligotrophic taxa, whose abundance increase in the summer, further suggests this condition. We created an integrated model, based on environmental parameters and the microbiota distribution, that identified temperature and nutrient availability (particularly nitrate and silicate) as the main parameters related to specific taxa patterns. Among these, Hahella, Granulossicoccus, Ferrimonas, Spongiibacteraceae and cyanobacterial Xenococcaceae and Nostocaceae change significantly between seasons. These bacterial components might play relevant roles in algal plasticity and adaptive responses to a changing environment. This study contributes to the understanding of the interplay of the prokaryotic microbiota with the mineral microenvironments of coralline algae. Because of their carbonates with potential resistance to dissolution in a higher pCO2 world and their seasonally dynamic bacteria, coralline algae are relevant targets to study coastal resilience and carbonated systems responses to changing environments.

Microbial communities play a central role in the N cycle of oceanic oxygen minimum zones (OMZs), such as in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific (ETNP). We explored the spatial distribution of the genetic potential for ammonia oxidation (amoA gene for bacteria and archaea), denitrification (nirS and nirK), anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) (hzo) and dissimilarity nitrate reduction to ammonia (DNRA) (nrfA) and their relationships with the hydrological variables and isotopic composition of nitrate in the ETNP off Mexico. Oxygen concentration, the availability of N chemical forms and the upwelling shaped the distribution of N cycling genes along the water column. The high abundance of N genes and the isotopic composition of nitrate suggest the N cycling is very dynamic in the OMZ core. The accumulation of nitrite, the high abundance of archaeal amoA genes, and the deviation of the N and O isotopes of nitrate from the expected 1:1 ratio for nitrate reduction in the upper portion of this OMZ indicate that nitrification is a relevant process that fuels the denitrifier community. Conversely, the high abundances of nitrate, ammonium and nrfA genes in the deeper layer indicate that DNRA is a crucial process enhancing anammox there. These results show the need for more detailed studies of the N processes in OMZs.

Los manglares de Laguna de Términos, Campeche han sido afectados por la pérdida de la conexión hidrológica durante el paso de tormentas y huracanes. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la regeneración natural del manglar en un área degradada, después de haber implementado acciones de restauración hidrológica. Se establecieron tres sitios de muestreo con diferentes tiempos de restauración (1 año - 3 años) y un sitio de manglar natural conservado como referencia. El muestreo se realizó en los años 2014 a 2015. Se evaluó densidad, altura, sobrevivencia y tasa de crecimiento de las plántulas, así como las características ambientales. La relación entre la vegetación y las características ambientales se realizaron mediante regresiones lineales simples y un análisis de escalamiento multidimensional. Para determinar la dispersión de propágulos respecto a los manglares naturales, se generó un modelo lineal mixto de la densidad de propágulos vs. la distancia y el tiempo de restauración. Los resultados demostraron que la distancia respecto a los manglares naturales afectó la densidad de los propágulos. La concentración de fosfato se relacionó con la sobrevivencia de las plántulas; mientras que la concentración de amonioy la concentración de sulfuro se relacionaron negativamente con la densidad de las plántulas. Las acciones de restauración hidrológica influyeron en el establecimiento y desarrollo de la vegetación de manglar; por lo tanto, las zonas de manglar natural y la restauración hidrológica facilitaron la dispersión de los propágulos hacia las zonas degradadas, resaltando la importancia de contemplar estas áreas naturales dentro de los proyectos de restauración.

Marine zooplankton play a pivotal position in the pelagic ecosystem and, as one of their principal members, copepods represent by far the most significant direct link between phytoplankton and the higher trophic levels. In this study, observational evidence of the effect of a mesoscale cyclonic eddy on the abundance of copepods (adult calanoids, adult cyclopoids and all copepodite stages) in the Bay of La Paz, southern Gulf of California, a region recognized as exhibiting high biodiversity, is presented. During a multidisciplinary research cruise in February 2006, high-resolution hydrographic profiles were obtained from a grid of stations throughout the bay, and oblique zooplankton hauls were made in its north-central portion. The results showed the presence of a mature mesoscale cyclonic eddy, which extended to 110 m depth and 30 km diameter, reaching a surface azimuthal velocity of 20 cm s–1 at its periphery. Below the mixed layer at 50 m depth this eddy induced a cold-core water dome (~16.25 °C) at its center. Within this cold water dome, nutrients concentrations were much higher than outside the eddy. Nitrate reached up to 15 μM, soluble reactive phosphorous (SRP) up to 1.6 μM, and soluble reactive silicate (SRSi) up to 30 μM within the eddy. The total abundance of the organisms analyzed varied according to group: the calanoid copepods reached values of 8112 ind 100 m–3, the cyclopoid copepods of 4281 ind 100 m–3, and the highest abundance was recorded by all copepodite stages, of 32,076 ind 100 m–3. The influence of the cyclonic structure on copepod abundance was to induce the formation of a circular shape around the eddy periphery, which could be called a ‘copepod belt shape’. We suggest that several mechanisms induce this aggregation, including: 1) the affinity of these organisms for waters with a favorable temperature, and 2) the availability of food (phytoplankton) generated by the presence of the cyclonic eddy and the sub-mesoscale processes there, as well as by the presence of a bathymetric sill. These results represent the first observational report on the influence of a mesoscale cyclonic eddy in the Bay of La Paz on zooplankton organisms in winter, which should contribute to a better understanding of the dynamics of this highly productive area.

For decades, La Redonda lagoon was an excellent location for fishing the largemouth bass (Micopterus salmoides, Lacepède) in Cuba. There are indications that the species disappeared from the lagoon in 2009. Three water surveys were carried out in 2013 and 2014. Physicochemical parameters, including nutrients, were measured in all surveys. Chlorophyllaand water transparency were only measured in November 2013. Results showed that this lagoon is a fresh to brackish water system, with common salinization episodes. There were some hypoxic conditions, but mean dissolved oxygen value was above 5.0 ± 2.8 mg L−1for the entire survey period. The trophic state was evaluated as oligotrophic and Nitrogen and Phosphorus were limiting in most of the survey sites. The Habitat Suitability Index model (HSI) for largemouth bass had a mean value of 0.63 ± 0.02 (moderate degree of suitability). All results showed that bass recovery could be possible in La Redonda lagoon, but management criteria are necessary. The largemouth bass recovery could help to increase visitations of American anglers to this place and a portion of the revenue could be used to conduct environmental monitoring and studies of the largemouth bass ecology in Cuba.

Marine picophytoplankton has become an important issue to understand the global ecology of phototrophic forms, due to its wide distribution and contribution to biomass and productivity. We studied the abundance, distribution and signature pigments of the prokaryote picophytoplankters Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus during an oceanographic cruise (26 April to 7 May, 2011) in the central Mexican Pacific, a relatively poorly-known oxygen minimum zone (OMZ), and the effect of three environmental gradients. Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus abundances were comparable with those found in other tropical areas (0.17 to 30.37 X 104 cells mL-1, and 0.9 to 30.97 X 104 cells mL-1, respectively). Prochlorococcus abundances reached highest numbers in deeper waters, often coinciding with the second deep in situ fluorescence (and chlorophyll α) maxima, at oceanic stations, below the nitratecline, whereas Synechococcus abundances were higher at subsurface waters and its concentration maxima usually coincided with the subsurface in situ fluorescence maxima, with slightly higher abundances in coastal stations. Statistical analyses support significantly these results. Distribution of divinyl-chlorophyll α was erratic along the water column and occasionally coincided with the deep in situ fluorescence maxima, whereas the distribution of zeaxanthin usually followed that of chlorophyll α and the abundances of Synechococcus, and peaked together. These results are similar to those previously found in the study area and in more temperate zones, and also to the general trend in OMZ, but confirm that the second deep chlorophyll α maxima are attributed to high Prochlorococcus densities. We additionally found the abundance and distribution of Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus strongly driven by the environmental gradients observed. Resumo O picophytoplankton marinho tornou-se uma questão importante para compreender a ecologia global das formas fototróficas, devido à sua ampla distribuição e contribuição para a biomassa e a produtividade. Estudamos os pigmentos de abundância, distribuição e assinatura do picofitoplâncton procarionte Prochlorococcus e Synechococcus durante um cruzeiro oceanográfico no Pacífico central mexicano, uma zona mínima de oxigênio relativamente poco conhecida (OMZ) e o efeito de três gradientes ambientais. As abundâncias de Prochlorococcus e Synechococcus foram comparáveis às encontradas em outras áreas tropicais (0.17 to 30.37 X 104 células mL-1, e 0.9 to 30.97 X 104 células mL-1, respectivamente). As abundâncias de Prochlorococcus atingiram o maior número em águas mais profundas, coincidindo frequentemente com a segunda intensidade de fluorescência in situ profunda (e clorofila a), em estações oceânicas, abaixo da nitratoclina, enquanto as abundâncias de Synechococcus foram maiores nas águas de subsuperficie e sua concentração máxima geralmente coincidiu com os máximos de subsuperficie de fluorescência in situ, com abundâncias ligeiramente mais altas nas estações costeiras. As análises estatísticas suportam significativamente esses resultados. A distribuição da divinil-clorofila a foi errática ao longo da coluna de água e coincidiu ocasionalmente com os máximos de fluorescência in situ profundos, enquanto que a distribuição da zeaxantina seguiu geralmente a da clorofila a e as abundâncias de Synechococcus e atingiu o pico. Estes resultados são semelhantes aos encontrados anteriormente na área de estudo e em zonas mais temperadas, e também à tendência geral na OMZ, mas confirmam que a clorofila profunda a maxima é atribuída a altas densidades de Prochlorococcus. Além disso, encontramos a abundância e distribuição de Prochlorococcus e Synechococcus fortemente conduzida pelos gradientes ambientais observados.

Microbialites are modern analogs of ancient microbial consortia that date as far back as the Archaean Eon. Microbialites have contributed to the geochemical history of our planet through their diverse metabolic capacities that mediate mineral precipitation. These mineral-forming microbial assemblages accumulate major ions, trace elements and biomass from their ambient aquatic environments; their role in the resulting chemical structure of these lithifications needs clarification. We studied the biogeochemistry and microbial structure of microbialites collected from diverse locations in Mexico and in a previously undescribed microbialite in Cuba. We examined their structure, chemistry and mineralogy at different scales using an array of nested methods including 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing, elemental analysis, X-Ray fluorescence (XRF), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier Transformed Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Synchrotron Radiation-based Fourier Transformed Infrared (SR-FTIR) spectromicroscopy. The resulting data revealed high biological and chemical diversity among microbialites and specific microbe to chemical correlations. Regardless of the sampling site, Proteobacteria had the most significant correlations with biogeochemical parameters such as organic carbon (Corg), nitrogen and Corg:Ca ratio. Biogeochemically relevant bacterial groups (dominant phototrophs and heterotrophs) showed significant correlations with major ion composition, mineral type and transition element content, such as cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper and nickel. Microbial-chemical relationships were discussed in reference to microbialite formation, microbial metabolic capacities and the role of transition elements as enzyme cofactors. This paper provides an analytical baseline to drive our understanding of the links between microbial diversity with the chemistry of their lithified precipitations.

Microbes can modulate ecosystem function since they harbor a vast genetic potential for biogeochemical cycling. The spatial and temporal dynamics of this genetic diversity should be acknowledged to establish a link between ecosystem function and community structure. In this study, we analyzed the genetic diversity of bacterial phosphorus utilization genes in two microbial assemblages, microbialites and bacterioplankton of Lake Alchichica, a semiclosed (i.e., endorheic) system with marked seasonality that varies in nutrient conditions, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and water column stability. We focused on dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) utilization gene dynamics during contrasting mixing and stratification periods. Bacterial alkaline phosphatases (phoX and phoD) and alkaline beta-propeller phytases (bpp) were surveyed. DOP utilization genes showed different dynamics evidenced by a marked change within an intra-annual period and a differential circadian pattern of expression. Although Lake Alchichica is a semiclosed system, this dynamic turnover of phylotypes (from lake circulation to stratification) points to a different potential of DOP utilization by the microbial communities within periods. To understand the responses of phytoplankton to water level fluctuations (WLFs) in tropical conditions at high altitude, limnological monitoring was performed monthly in Valle de Bravo (VB) reservoir, a waterbody affected by relatively strong WLFs due to water scarcity in central Mexico during 2008–2009. The thermal behaviour of the reservoir was warm, monomictic (Nov–Feb), and water levels fell to 12 m below capacity. Observed hypolimnetic temperature increases in VB are considered indirect evidence of boundary mixing events, previously attributed to internal waves driven by strong diurnal winds along a 7 km fetch. Unusually low biomasses were observed during circulation, probably due to low light availability (Z eu /Z mix 20 °C) temperatures. Dominant species were Cyclotella ocellata, Fragilaria crotonensis, Woronichinia naegeliana, and Microcystis wesenbergii. Nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria (Nostocales), a recurrent problem in this reservoir, were markedly less abundant than during high-water periods (2002–2005), probably due to dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) inputs from the hypolimnion. Cyanobacterial microbial mats are highly structured communities commonly found in Antarctic inland waters including melt streams. These benthic microbial associations comprise a large number of microorganisms with different metabolic capacities, impacting nutrient dynamics where established. The denitrification process is a feasible nitrogen loss pathway and a biological source of nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas that also promotes ozone depletion. Potential denitrifiers from five microbial mats were characterized using a PCR-DGGE (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis) approach. Molecular markers encoding for key enzymes in the denitrification process (nirK, nirS and nosZ) were used. Fingerprints were obtained for the five sampled mats and compared for two successive years. Distance analysis showed that despite the sampled year, the denitrifying genetic potential was similar between most of the sites when represented in Euclidean space. The number of dominant denitrifiers detected for each sample ranged between 6 and 18 for nirK, 4–10 for nirS and 6–17 for nosZ. The seventy-two sequenced phylotypes showed 80–98 % identity to previously reported environmental sequences from water column, sediments and soil samples. These results suggest that Antarctic microbial mats have a large denitrification potential, previously uncharacterized and composed by both site-specific and common phylotypes belonging mainly to Alpha-, Beta- and Gammaproteobacteria.

The management of protected areas in karstic regions is a challenge because flooded cave systems form there and provide underground hydrological conducts that may link different zones. As a consequence, affectations to the protected areas can possibly occur as a consequence of human activities in remote areas and may therefore pass undetected. Thus, the monitoring of possible contaminants in these regions is becoming imperative. In this work, we analyze the concentration of essential (iron) and non-essential metals (cadmium and chromium) in the seagrass Thalassia testudinum that grows in Yalahau Lagoon, located in a near-to-pristine protected area of the Yucatan Peninsula, close to the rapidly developing touristic belt of the Mexican Caribbean. Salinity and silicate patterns show that Yalahau is an evaporation lagoon, where groundwater discharge is important. High iron (>400 μg/g), cadmium (>4 μg/g), and chromium (≈1 μg/g) concentrations were found in the area of highest groundwater input of the lagoon. High levels (5.1 μg/g) were also found near the town dump. In the rest of the sampling sites, metal concentrations remained near to background levels as estimated from other works. Temporal changes of concentrations in the seagrass tissues show also a local input and an input from the groundwater that could provoke an environmental problem in the Yalahau Lagoon in the near future.

Lake Alchichica (Mexico) is an oligotrophic environment where nitrogen (N) and phosphorus alternately limit productivity, and massive microbialite growths are found along the lake's perimeter. Previous studies have described the importance of N2 fixation in these microbialites, although other pathways associated with the N cycle, including denitrification, nitrification and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), had not been evaluated. This study identified the genetic diversity associated with N cycling in both metagenomic DNA and RNA expression by targeting key genes for nitrogenase (nifH), ammonia monooxygenase (amoA), nitrite oxidoreductase (nxrA, nxrB), hydrazine oxidoreductase (hzo) and nitrite (nirS and nirK) and nitrous oxide (nosZ) reductases. While the genetic potential for N2 fixation, ammonia oxidation, anammox and denitrification was present in the microbialites of Lake Alchichica, the most transcribed pathway was N2 fixation.

Nitrogen (N) deposition to the ocean is thought to be increasing worldwide, but the amount of coastal and open ocean measurements is very limited. In this paper, we assess N deposition in the coastal zone of Cayo Coco, in central Cuba, during a multi-annual period (2005–2007). Wet and dry N depositions were estimated based on the NH 4 + and NO x – concentrations in the rain. Cold fronts and troughs, coming from the west, contributed most to rain (41%) and to N deposition, followed by tropical waves and storms coming from the east, which caused 31% of the rain. Average concentrations of NH 4 + and NO x – in the rain were 8.8 and 8.3 μM. NO x – presented a clearly decreasing trend (0.26 μM per month), decreasing by half during 2005–2007. Total N deposition averaged 3.23 kg N ha−1 year−1, similar to that found in Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, but lower than previously measured in Cuba and in nearby areas of the USA and than model predictions for the oceanic region around Cuba. These low values and the decreasing trend found are attributed to drastic reduction of fossil fuel and fertilizer use in Cuba since 1990. Because land input has decreased even more drastically, deposition seems to be nowadays the most important N source to the coastal zone of Cayo Coco. The δ15N range of seagrass (Thalassia testudinum) and macroalgae (Penicillus dumetosus) in the area (−1.83‰ to 3.02‰ and +1.02‰ to +4.17‰, respectively) sustain that atmospheric sources (deposition and N2 fixation) comprise 70–90% of the N budget.

The prokaryotic picoplankton (PPP) composition was studied in the tropical high-altitude saline Lake Alchichica, Mexico, using fluorescence in situ hybridization. Thetemporal dynamics of the PPP followed the annual hydrodynamics of this warm-monomictic lake. The abundance of both the autotrophic (APP) and heterotrophic(HPP) functional groups of PPP increased during the mixing period to reachmaximum values at the beginning of the stratification period, when the highesthybridization percentages for the domain Bacteria were also registered. The increasein PPP was most likely related to the availability of nutrients soon after the start ofthe mixing period. Throughout the rest of the stratification, APP and HPP decreasedsignificantly together with the hybridization percentages, mostly related to theexhaustion of nutrients in the mixing zone. In spite of being oligosaline, the prokar-yotic composition of Lake Alchichica was more typical of fresh than of saltier waterbodies. During the mixing period, the Pcy and Planctomycetes (PLA) formed the mainbacterioplankton fraction. Meanwhile throughout the stratification period PLA,Betaproteobacteria (BET) and Gammaproteobacteria (GAM) were the most abun-dant groups in the epilimnion and metalimnion. The domain Archaea (ARCH), BET,GAM, Paracoccus the principal denitrifier of the Alphaproteobacteria and sulphate-reducing bacteria were dominant in the oxycline and hypolimnion in associationwith dissolved oxygen depletion and the nutrient enrichment of the deeper strata.KEYWORDS: prokaryoplankton; warm-monomictic; oligosaline; tropical high-altitude

The distribution and abundance patterns of planktonic foraminifera in sediments and their relation to ocean dynamics were studied in the Gulf of Tehuantepec. Hydrographic and nutrient data outline the contrast between two extreme seasons in the gulf. The winter–early spring conditions, dominated by upwelling and a cyclonic eddy that fertilize the surface waters; and summer conditions with the typical stratified water column of the tropical Pacific. Foraminiferal abundances (number of individuals/g of sediment) are related to the ocean dynamics and productivity. Highest abundances are found in the areas influenced by upwelling and associated front and cold eddy and lower abundances are beneath the areas of influence of the warm-core, lower-productivity eddies. The effects of dissolution seem to be important at depths over 1000 m, but do not appear to affect critically the foraminiferal remains throughout most of the studied area, except near the phosphorite deposits of the Oaxaqueno bank. Dilution by terrigenous materials from riverine inputs, seafloor topography and strong transport under the upwelling jet are likely to modify the detailed pattern of foraminiferal abundance found, without blurring the major imprint of productivity driven by the upwelling. Three planktonic foraminiferal assemblages were found, reflecting the major oceanographic conditions in the gulf. The Globigerina bulloides assemblage dominates most of the gulf, indicating the overall high productivity of the upwelling-influenced surface waters. The dynamics of the winter–early spring upwelling and associated eddies leave a strong imprint in the planktonic foraminiferal assemblages in the sediments. The distribution of the Globigerinita glutinata assemblage is tied to the axis of upwelling, and the Globorotalia menardii–Neogloboquadrina dutertrei assemblage to the warm equatorial water cores. The distribution patterns of these assemblages should help identify Quaternary paleoenvironments influenced by upwelling and associated changes in productivity.

Dissolved organic phosphorus utilization by different members of natural communities has been closely linked to microbial alkaline phosphatases whose affiliation and diversity is largely unknown. Here we assessed genetic diversity of bacterial alkaline phosphatases phoX and phoD, using highly diverse microbial consortia (microbialites and bacterioplankton) as study models. These microbial consortia are found in an oligo-mesotrophic soda lake with a particular geochemistry, exhibiting a low calcium concentration and a high Mg : Ca ratio relative to seawater. In spite of the relative low calcium concentration in the studied system, our results highlight the diversity of calcium-based metallophosphatases phoX and phoD-like in heterotrophic bacteria of microbialites and bacterioplankton, where phoX was the most abundant alkaline phosphatase found. phoX and phoD-like phylotypes were more numerous in microbialites than in bacterioplankton. A larger potential community for DOP utilization in microbialites was consistent with the TN : TP ratio, suggesting P limitation within these assemblages. A cross-system comparison indicated that diversity of phoX in Lake Alchichica was similar to that of other aquatic systems with a naturally contrasting ionic composition and trophic state, although no phylotypes were shared among systems.

The tropical karstic lakes on the Mexican Caribbean Sea coast are numerous. However, there is an enormous gap of knowledge about their limnological conditions and micro-algae communities. In the present study, surface water samples were collected monthly from November 2007 to September 2008 to provide taxonomical composition and biovolume of planktonic cyanobacteria of the lake Lagartos from State of Quintana Roo, Mexico. Water temperature, pH, conductivity, salinity, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), and soluble reactive silica (SRSi) levels were also analyzed. A total of 22 species were identified. Chroococcales and Oscillatoriales dominated the phytoplankton assemblages during the study period. Chroococcus pulcherrimus, Coelosphaerium confertum, Cyanodyction iac, Phormidium pachydermaticum and Planktolyngbya contorta were recorded for the first time in Mexico. A surplus of DIN (mean value of 42.7µM) and low concentrations of SRP (mean value of 1.0µM) promoted the enhanced growth and bloom formation of cyanobacteria. The mean biovolume was 3.22X10(8)µm³/mL, and two biovolume peaks were observed; the first was dominated by Microcystis panniformis in November 2007 (7.40X10(8)µm³/mL), and the second was dominated by Oscillatoria princeps in April 2008 (6.55X10(8)µm³/mL). Water quality data, nitrates enrichment, and trophic state based on biovolume, indicated that Lagartos is a hyposaline, secondarily phosphorus-limited, and eutrophic lake, where the cyanobacteria flora was composed mainly by non-heterocystous groups. Los lagos cársticos tropicales en la costa del Caribe mexicano son numerosos. Sin embargo, existe un enorme desconocimiento acerca de sus condiciones limnológicas y de las comunidades de microalgas que se desarrollan en ellos. El objetivo del presente estudio fue estudiar las condiciones limnológicas en las que crecen las poblaciones de cianobacterias planctónicas del lago Lagartos, Quintana Roo, México. Las recolectas se realizaron de forma mensual entre noviembre 2007 y septiembre 2008. Las especies fueron identificadas y su biovolumen determinado. Se midieron in situ la temperatura del agua, pH, conductividad y salinidad. También, se analizaron las concentraciones de fósforo reactivo soluble (SRP), nitrógeno inorgánico disuelto (DIN) y sílice reactivo soluble (SRSi). Se identificaron 22 especies de cianobacterias. Chroococcus pulcherrimus, Coelosphaerium confertum, Cyanodyction iac, Phormidium pachydermaticum y Planktolyngbya contorta fueron nuevos registros para México. Un exceso de DIN (valor promedio de 42.7µM) y bajas concentraciones de PRS (valor promedio de 1.0µM) promovieron la proliferación de cianobacterias. El biovolumen presentó dos picos: el primero en noviembre 2007, dominado por Microcystis panniformis (7.40X10(8)µm³/mL) y el segundo en abril 2008, representado por Oscillatoria princeps (6.55X10(8)µm³/mL). Los datos de calidad del agua, el enriquecimiento por nitratos y el estado trófico basado en el biovolumen, indican que Lagartos es un lago hiposalino, eutrófico, con limitación secundaria por fósforo, donde los crecimientos masivos de cianobacterias sin heterocitos fueron recurrentes.

Laguna Larga, a coastal lagoon in central Cuba, has been heavily altered by tourism infrastructure construction and sewage disposal. We hypothesize that this has decreased the circulation and caused eutrophication of the lagoon. To assess this, 12 bimonthly samplings were carried out in 2007-2008. Temperature, salinity, oxygen, nutrients and nitrogen, and phosphorous fractions (inorganic, organic, and total) were determined. Water and salt budgets, as well as biogeochemical fluxes of nitrogen and phosphorus were calculated using the LOICZ budget model for the three sections of the lagoon identified by morphological constrains and salinity patterns. Laguna Larga is a choked lagoon with restricted water circulation, low exchange, and high residence times that vary significantly along its sections. Residence time was estimated to be 0.1-0.7 years for the inner section and 1-9 days for the outer one. High levels of total nitrogen (annual means 126-137 μM, peaks up to 475 μM) and phosphorus (2.5-4.4 μM, peaks up to 14.5 μM) are evidence of eutrophication of Laguna Larga. During 2007, an average precipitation year, Laguna Larga exported water (703 m(3) d(-1)) and was a source of nitrogen (9.026 mmol m(-2) d(-1)) and phosphorus (0.112 mmol m(-2) d(-1)) to the adjacent sea. δ(15)N determinations in the seagrass Thalassia testudinum (-1.83 to +3.02 ‰) differed significantly between sites in the lagoon and offshore reference sites located W of the inlet, but were similar to those located E of the inlet. δ(15)N determinations in the seaweed Penicillus dumetosus (+1.02 to +4.2) did not show significant differences.
