Acanthodoras is the only genus of catfish known to secrete a conspicuous and abundant milky-looking substance through an axillary pore located just below the base of the posterior cleithral process. Despite this remarkable feature, there is no published information on the anatomical structures that produce the secretion and its possible biological/ecological functions. Dissection and histological analysis of preserved specimens of A. spinosissimus revealed the presence of a saccular axillary gland with large, binuclear secretory cells, similar to those found in other poisonous catfish. Secretory cells near the lumen appear to lose nuclei and become filled with secretory products, possibly with proteinaceous elements, as indicated by their eosinophilic appearance. As far as we know, the saccular morphology of the gland appears to constitute a unique characteristic of Acanthodoras among Doradidae catfishes. Further studies are necessary to determine the chemical composition of the secretion, as well as its possible uses by the catfish in its natural environment.

Despite conservation of the diploid number, a huge diversity in karyotype formulae is found in the Ancistrini tribe (Loricariidae, Hypostominae). However, the lack of cytogenetic data for many groups impairs a comprehensive understanding of the chromosomal relationships and the impact of chromosomal changes on their evolutionary history. Here, we present for the first time the karyotype of Panaqolus tankei Cramer & Sousa, 2016. We focused on the chromosomal characterization, using conventional and molecular cytogenetic techniques to unravel the evolutionary trends of this tribe. P. tankei, as most species of its sister group Pterygoplichthini, also possessess a conserved diploid number of 52 chromosomes. We observed heterochromatin regions in the centromeres of many chromosomes; pairs 5 and 6 presented interstitial heterochromatin regions, whereas pairs 23 and 24 showed extensive heterochromatin regions in their q arms. In situ localization of 18S rDNA showed hybridization signals correlating with the nucleolus organizer regions, which are located in the q arms of pair 5. However, the 5S rDNA was detected in the centromeric and terminal regions of the q arms of pair 8. (TTAGGG)n hybridized only in the terminal regions of all chromosomes. Microsatellite in situ localization showed divergent patterns, (GA)15 repeated sequences were restricted to the terminal regions of some chromosomes, whereas (AC)15 and (GT)15 showed a scattered hybridization pattern throughout the genome. Intraspecific comparative genomic hybridization was performed on the chromosomes of P. tankei to verify the existence of sex-specific regions. The results revealed only a limited number of overlapping hybridization signals, coinciding with the heterochromatin in centromeric regions without any sex-specific signals in both males and females. Our study provides a karyotype description of P. tankei, highlighting extensive differences in the karyotype formula, the heterochromatin regions, and sites of 5S and 18S rDNA, as compared with data available for the genus.

Aspidoras azaghal n. sp. was discovered during a multitaxonomic scientific expedition to the remote Amazon Terra do Meio region in tributaries to the rio Xingu basin, Para, Brazil. The new species can be promptly distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of features: (I) absence of the first dorsal-fin element; (II) parieto-supraoccipital fontanel located medially on bone; (III) absence of a longitudinal dark brown or black stripe along flank midline; (IV) ventral surface of trunk covered by clearly smaller, irregular and/or roundish platelets; (V) inner laminar expansion of infraorbital 1 well developed; (VI) relatively wide frontal bone, with width equal to half of entire length; (VII) absence of a thick, longitudinal conspicuous dark brown stripe along dorsal portion of flank; and (VIII) poorly developed serrations on posterior margin of the pectoral-fin spine. Besides morphological evidence, the molecular analyses indicated significant differences between the new species and its congeners, with A. albater and A. raimundi as its closest species, showing 6.53% of genetic differentiation in both cases. The intraspecific molecular data revealed gene flow (FST = 0.21641 for the COI marker, and FST = 0.53213 for the Control Region) between specimens from upstream and downstream a 30-meters height waterfall at the type-locality, which therefore represent a single population (P = 0.001 for COI, and P = 0.007 for the Control Region). Furthermore, it was possible to observe a unidirectional gene flow pattern, with genetic diversity increasing in the downstream direction.

Length-weight relationship (LWR) for 39 freshwater fish species captured in the Catalao Lake, a floodplain area at the confluence of the Amazonas and Negro rivers is presented. LWRs were calculated based on fish sampled over 18 years (1999–2017) using a set of ten gill nets with different mesh sizes, monthly immersed in water for 24-hr with 6-hr interval catches. Measurements were done for standard length (SL – 0.1 cm precision) and total weight (TW – 0.01 g precision). The LWRs were calculated by the linear regression of natural log-transformed SL and TW data: TW = a × SLb. All statistical analyses were performed with R software. From all species considered, 32 are new LWR records for the international literature as well as for the Amazonian ichythyofauna; additional records expand the known size range for seven species. © 2020 Blackwell Verlag GmbH

The present study objectified to evaluate the trophic relationships and the possible aggressive mimicry involving Carnegiella strigata, Carnegiella marthae and Gnathocharax steindachneri, in lowland forest streams. Samplings occurred in November 2002, March and August 2003 in Amanã Sustainable Development Reserve (ASDR). The total of 943 fish was caught, being 79.43% of C. marthae, 3.18% of C. strigata and 17.39% of G. steindachneri. Stomach contents, degree of stomach repletion, relative volume and frequency of occurrence of food items were evaluated. Thirteen food items were identified, and the presence of terrestrial and aquatic insects indicates the high dependence of these species and the flooded forest. Low feeding overlap was observed between Carnegiella strigata and C. marthae compared to Gnathocharax steindachneri. However, the overlap between the two Carnegiella species was relatively high, which could explain the low frequency of syntopic occurrence among these species, suggesting a possible case of competitive exclusion. Resumo Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar as relações tróficas e a possível existência de uma relação de mimetismo agressivo envolvendo Carnegiella strigata, Carnegiella marthae e Gnathocharax steindachneri, em igarapés de terra firme. As coletas ocorreram em novembro de 2002, março e agosto de 2003 e foram realizadas na Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustentável de Amanã (RDSA). Foram capturados 943 peixes, onde C. marthae representou 79,43%, C. strigata 3,18% e G. steindachneri 17,39%. Foram analisados os conteúdos estomacais e verificados grau de repleção, volume relativo e frequência de ocorrência dos alimentos. Foram identificados 13 itens alimentares, onde insetos terrestres e aquáticos denotaram alto grau de dependência destas espécies em relação à floresta alagada. Ocorreu baixa sobreposição alimentar das espécies Carnegiella strigata e C. marthae em relação a Gnathocharax steindachneri. Entretanto, a sobreposição entre as duas espécies de Carnegiella foi relativamente alta, o que poderia explicar a baixa frequência de ocorrência sintópica entre essas espécies, sugerindo um possível caso de exclusão competitiva.

The mechanosensory system in batoids has a unique sensory canal distribution located on both dorsal and ventral surfaces of the body. Due to the opposite position of eyes and mouth, ventral lateral-line canals are essential to detect and capture prey buried in the substrate. The present study analyzes the density of neuromasts in ventral lateral-line canals as well as their specific distribution patterns to help to understand the mechanisms involved in the foraging activities in potamotrygonid stingrays. The organization of the lateral-line canals was described in Potamotrygon albimaculata, P. jabuti and P. schroederi. Neuromasts were quantified in each canal of the ventral surface and endemic their densities were compared among P. albimaculata, P. jabuti, P. schroederi, P. wallacei, and Paratrygon aiereba. The orbito-nasal component of the infraorbital canal was examined for all genera of Potamotrygoninae to understand its origin and connection patterns. Despite similarities in the morphology of the lateral line in the examined potamotrygonid species, differences of the densities of neuromasts were observed. The distinct web-like infraorbital canal in Paratrygon aiereba held a significantly higher number of neuromasts, which apparently compensates the lower density of neuromasts along its ventral surface. The orbito-nasal component of the infraorbital canal presents connections between infraorbital and nasal canals, except for P. aiereba, which has a supra-infraorbital canals’ connection. The complex distribution of lateral line canals and their neuromasts indicate distinct sensory abilities that probably provide a high capability to detect a variety of prey in different types of substrate.

This study presents an extensive review of published and unpublished occurrence records of fish species in the Rio Negro drainage system within the Brazilian territory. The data was gathered from two main sources: 1) litterature compilations of species occurrence records, including original descriptions and revisionary studies; and 2) specimens verification at the INPA fish collection. The results reveal a rich and diversified ichthyofauna, with 1,165 species distributed in 17 orders (+ two incertae sedis), 56 families, and 389 genera. A large portion of the fish fauna (54.3% of the species) is composed of small-sized fishes < 10 cm in standard length. The main groups are Characiformes (454 species; 39.0%), Siluriformes (416; 35.7%), Gymnotiformes (105; 9.0%), and Cichliformes (102; 8.8%). The species composition differs between the main aquatic environments, such as: main channel (159 species), lakes (296), tributary rivers (596), small streams (234), seasonal beaches (186), and rapids (41). Part of the ichthyofauna is shared with adjacent basins, such as the Orinoco, rivers of the Guiana Shield, lower Solimões/Amazonas and upper Amazonas, which contributes to the remarkable ichthyofaunal diversity of the basin. A high rate of species endemism was observed in Characidae (24), Loricariidae (18), Cichlidae (18) and Callichthyidae (18), totalling 156 species (13.4%) endemic to the basin. An estimation of the species richness for the Rio Negro basin, considering 23 published references, resulted in 1,466 and 1,759 species (Jackknife 1 and 2, respectively), which seems reasonable when considering the large number of morphotypes left out of the present list and the low sampling effort in many areas of the basin. The results presented herein provide an additional tool for environmental managers and decision makers for conservation purposes of one of the richest and most well-preserved sub-basins of the Rio Amazonas system.

Sexual dimorfism refers to morphological differences between males and females of a species. It may be a result of different selection pressures acting on either or both sexes and may occur in any sexually-reproducing dioecious species, including fishes. We analyzed 63 females and 63 adult males of Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni (Gymnotiformes) collected by us or deposited in museum collections. Sex was identified through abdominal dissection. We measured length from snout to posterior end of anal-fin, anal-fin length, distance from anus to anal-fin origin, distance from genital papilla to anal-fin origin, body width at beginning of anal-fin, and head length. Morphometric data submitted to a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) grouped males and females according to variables related to body size (along the first component) and to head length and body height along the second and third components. Females were larger than males, whereas males had proportionally larger heads and higher bodies than females. The urogenital papilla of males and females showed differences in shape, size and relative position on the body. The female papilla was elongated horizontally, larger than that of males, and was located on a vertical line below the eye, while the papilla of the males was vertically elongated and located on a vertical line below the operculum. To our knowledge, this is the first recorded case of sexual dimorphism in a species of Rhamphichthyidae, a condition that is now known in all the currently recognized families of Gymnotiformes. © 2019, Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazonia. Electrophorus spp. generate high-voltage electric discharges for defense and hunting, and low-voltage electric discharges (as other Gymnotiformes) for electrolocation and communication. Despite intense interest in the unusual electrogenic and electroreceptive capacities of electric eels, the other sensory systems of Electrophorus spp. are relatively poorly known. Here we describe the ontogenetic development and organization of the cephalic lateral-line canals in the lowland electric eel, Electrophorus varii. Preserved specimens of larvae, juveniles, and adults were examined to describe the spatial distribution of the canals and pores. Ontogenetic shifts of the cephalic lateral line formation were observed for each canal and support a hypothesis of non-synchronized development. The morphogenesis of cephalic canals in larvae and juveniles begins just before the onset of exogenous feeding. In adults, the cephalic sensory canals are formed separately from the skull and overlay cranial and mandibular bones and muscles. This study provides the first detailed description of the development and organization of the cephalic lateral-line system in Electrophorus varii. Resumo Electrophorus spp. geram descargas elétricas de alta voltagem, usadas para defesa e caça, e (como os demais Gymnotiformes) descargas elétricas de baixa voltagem para eletrolocalização e comunicação. Apesar do grande interesse nas capacidades eletrogênicas e eletrorreceptivas incomuns dos poraquês, os outros sistemas sensoriais de Electrophorus spp. são relativamente pouco conhecidos. Aqui nós descrevemos o desenvolvimento ontogenético e a organização dos canais da linha lateral cefálica no poraquê da planície Electrophorus varii. Exemplares preservados de larvas, juvenis e adultos foram analisados para descrever a distribuição espacial dos canais e poros. Variações ontogenéticas na formação da linha lateral cefálica foram observadas para cada canal, apresentando um desenvolvimento não-sincronizado. Variações ontogenéticas da formação da linha lateral cefálica foram observadas para cada canal e suportam uma hipótese de desenvolvimento assincrônico. A morfogênese dos canais cefálicos em larvas e juvenis precede o início da alimentação exógena. Nos adultos, os canais sensoriais cefálicos se formam separadamente do crânio e sobrepõem os ossos e músculos cranianos e mandibulares. Este estudo fornece a primeira descrição detalhada do desenvolvimento e organização do sistema da linha lateral cefálica de Electrophorus varii.

To better understand the fish fauna of Amazonian streams, we assessed small streams in a landscape of forest fragments and savannah in the region of the lower Tapajós River, Brazil. We sampled the fish fauna using a well-tested active capture method during two dry seasons (October 2006 and 2018) and one rainy season (March to May 2018). Species richness was calculated using an abundance matrix and first-order jackknife estimator. Using qualitative and quantitative data, we present a cluster analysis in which each stream corresponds to a sampling unit. We collected 6,094 individuals of 43 species distributed in six orders. The sampling effort represents 73% of the estimated richness (58.69 ± 7.65). The most abundant species were Copella nattereri, Iguanodectes variatus and Laimosemion dibaphus that together represent almost half of the total sample (48.7%). The most frequent species were Aequidens epae, Helogenes marmoratus and Laimosemion dibaphus, which were collected in 11 of the 13 sampled streams. This is the first fish fauna list for small-order streams of savannah and forest fragments landscape in Amazonian Brazil. The richness of fish and the presence of many rare species underscore the contribution of small streams to the regional fish fauna composition, even in dynamic and spatially restricted landscapes. Resumo: Com o objetivo de aprimorar o conhecimento científico sobre a ocorrência da ictiofauna de riachos na Amazônia, acessamos pequenos riachos em uma paisagem composta por fragmentos florestais e savana, na região do baixo rio Tapajós. Amostramos a fauna de peixes com um método bem testado de captura ativa em duas estações secas, outubro de 2006 e 2018 e em uma estação chuvosa de março a maio de 2018. A riqueza de espécies foi calculada a partir da matriz de abundância com o estimador jackknife de primeira ordem. Usando dados qualitativos e quantitativos, apresentamos uma análise de agrupamento, onde cada riacho corresponde a uma unidade amostral. Coletamos 6094 indivíduos, de 43 espécies distribuídas em seis ordens. O esforço de amostragem representou 73% da riqueza estimada (58,69 ± 7,65). As espécies mais abundantes foram Copella nattereri, Iguanodectes variatus e Laimosemion dibaphus, representando em conjunto quase a metade do total amostrado (48,7%). As espécies mais frequentes foram Aequidens epae, Helogenes marmoratus e Laimosemion dibaphus, coletadas em 11 dos 13 riachos amostrados. Esta é a primeira lista de peixes de pequenos riachos em savana e fragmentos florestais da Amazônia brasileira. A riqueza de peixes e a presença de muitas espécies raras ressaltam a contribuição de riachos de pequena ordem para a composição regional da fauna de peixes, mesmo em paisagens dinâmicas e espacialmente restritas.

A new species of Hyphessobrycon Durbin from the Paraná do Urariá system in Central Amazon region, Amazonas state, Brazil, is described. The new species is allocated into the Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus species-group due to its color pattern, composed by a well-defined, horizontally elongated humeral blotch continuous with a conspicuous midlateral dark stripe that becomes blurred towards the caudal peduncle, and can be distinguished from all other species of the group by possessing humeral blotch and continuous midlateral stripe broad, occupying vertical height equivalent of two scale rows. A tricolored pattern composed dorsally by a red or reddish longitudinal stripe, a middle iridescent, golden or silvery longitudinal stripe, and ventrally by a variably-developed longitudinal dark stripe is identified as a putative additional character shared by the species of the Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus species-group. The presence of bony hooks in all fins in mature males of some species of the Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus species-group is also discussed.

Several organisms match their skin color to the prevalent background color, granting crypsis against predators. The rate at which body color changes occur varies among organisms as a result of physiological constraints and adaptation to variation in contrasts between objects and the environmental background. Faster darkening of body color is favored in environments that show higher amounts of contrast between common objects and the prevailing background. Soil types in Amazon forest streams (igarapés) create distinct environments with respect to the amount of contrast, a result of the amount of sand and clay, which offers different contrasts against dead leaves. Here, we investigated differences in the rates of color change among populations of the sailfin tetra (Crenuchus spilurus) that represent lineages that live in regions of different soil types. Populations inserted into blackwaters (sandy soil) showed higher rates of color darkening in response to exposure to a dark environment composed by dead leaves. We propose that natural selection stemming from predation can favor faster color change rate in environments where there is higher variability of contrasts between leaf litter and soil, which is common in most blackwater streams. RESUMO Diversos organismos combinam sua coloração corporal com a cor de fundo predominante no ambiente, conferindo cripticidade contra predadores. A taxa na qual as mudanças de coloração corpórea ocorrem varia entre os organismos como resultado de restrições fisiológicas e adaptação à variação de contrastes entre objetos e o ambiente. O escurecimento mais rápido da cor do corpo é favorecido em ambientes que mostram maiores quantidades de contraste entre objetos comuns e o fundo predominante. Tipos de solo em igarapés da floresta amazônica criam ambientes distintos em relação à quantidade de contraste, resultado da quantidade de areia e argila, que oferece diferentes contrastes contra folhiço submerso. Nós investigamos as diferenças nas taxas de mudança de cor entre populações do tetra-colibri Crenuchus spilurus que representam linhagens que vivem em regiões de diferentes tipos de solo. Populações inseridas em águas pretas (solo arenoso) apresentaram maiores taxas de escurecimento da cor em resposta à exposição ao ambiente escuro de folhiço submerso. Nós propomos que a seleção natural decorrente da predação pode favorecer uma taxa de mudança de cor mais rápida em ambientes onde há maior variabilidade de contrastes entre o folhiço submerso e o solo, o que é comum na maioria dos igarapés de águas pretas.

Following Alfred Russel Wallace, Amazonian freshwaters are classified into three types: black, white, and clear. Such waters have been demonstrated to affect adaptation and gene flow of the aquatic fauna. However, this classification focuses on large rivers and fails to acknowledge the importance of small forest streams that flow through upland terra firme forests, known as igarapes. Igarapes are surrounded by a distinct floristic composition when compared to the floodplains and contribute with a much greater water load to the Amazon basin than the Amazon River itself. We assessed the importance of blackwater, whitewater, and igarape water on spawning and habitat choice in Crenuchus spilurus, a small fish composed of distinct genetic lineages that occur in igarapes flowing to blackwater and whitewater systems. Lineages from igarapes connected to the Rio Negro (blackwater) and Amazon River (whitewater) basins have greater spawning success in igarape water than in the water from their surrounding floodplain. Habitat choice trials showed active selection of igarape water by both lineages. Our results indicate that the hydrochemical condition of igarapes shapes adaptation in the physiology and behavior of C. spilurus. We suggest expanding upon the current classification to include igarapes as a distinct water type and environment.

Amphibious habits are present in a variety of fish and are allowed by a set of physiological, morphological and behavioural adaptations. The most intriguing question, however, is what motivates an aquatic organism to venture into the land? Unfavourable abiotic and biotic conditions in the aquatic environment have been reported as main stimuli for fish to emerge from water. However, few attempts have been made to disentangle the effects of different social contexts on the propensity of amphibious fishes to leave the water. Trying to separate the effects of predator threat, intraspecific competition and mate searching on overland movement of amphibious fish, we ran a mesocosm experiment with the Amazonian killifish Anablepsoides micropus. Overland movement was quantified based on fish leaps between artificial pools set in enclosures in a primary forest area. Males moved overland more frequently than females and their movement depended on the social context, being higher in the presence of predators and lower in the presence of females. Females, instead, showed context‐independent movement rates. This suggests that males move between pools searching for mates, stopping when successful in this search. On the other hand, occasional encounters with predators may force males to abandon the pool as a defence mechanism. Female aggressiveness towards the predator may influence its low movement in the presence of the predator. Such differential responses may play important ecological and evolutionary roles, allowing A. micropus to occupy a wide range of environmental conditions under varied ecological and social contexts.

The Amazon Basin is an unquestionable biodiversity hotspot, containing the highest freshwater biodiversity on earth and facing off a recent increase in anthropogenic threats. The current knowledge on the spatial distribution of the freshwater fish species is greatly deficient in this basin, preventing a comprehensive understanding of this hyper-diverse ecosystem as a whole. Filling this gap was the priority of a transnational collaborative project, i.e. the AmazonFish project - https://www.amazon-fish.com/. Relying on the outputs of this project, we provide the most complete fish species distribution records covering the whole Amazon drainage. The database, including 2,406 validated freshwater native fish species, 232,936 georeferenced records, results from an extensive survey of species distribution including 590 different sources (e.g. published articles, grey literature, online biodiversity databases and scientific collections from museums and universities worldwide) and field expeditions conducted during the project. Conserving freshwater habitats and their biodiversity in the Amazon Basin is a growing challenge in the face of rapid anthropogenic changes. We used the most comprehensive fish-occurrence database available (2355 valid species; 21,248 sampling points) and 3 ecological criteria (irreplaceability, representativeness, and vulnerability) to identify biodiversity hotspots based on 6 conservation templates (3 proactive, 1 reactive, 1 representative, and 1 balanced) to provide a set of alternative planning solutions for freshwater fish protection in the Amazon Basin. We identified empirically for each template the 17% of sub-basins that should be conserved and performed a prioritization analysis by identifying current and future (2050) threats (i.e., degree of deforestation and habitat fragmentation by dams). Two of our 3 proactive templates had around 65% of their surface covered by protected areas; high levels of irreplaceability (60% of endemics) and representativeness (71% of the Amazonian fish fauna); and low current and future vulnerability. These 2 templates, then, seemed more robust for conservation prioritization. The future of the selected sub-basins in these 2 proactive templates is not immediately threatened by human activities, and these sub-basins host the largest part of Amazonian biodiversity. They could easily be conserved if no additional threats occur between now and 2050.Puntos Calientes de Diversidad de Peces de Agua Dulce para las Prioridades de Conservación en la Cuenca del Amazonas Resumen Cada día, la conservación de los hábitats de agua dulce y su biodiversidad en la cuenca del Amazonas es un reto creciente de cara a los rápidos cambios antropogénicos. Usamos la base de datos de presencia de peces más completa que existe (2,355 especies válidas; 21,248 puntos de muestreo) y tres criterios ecológicos (carácter irremplazable, representatividad y vulnerabilidad) para identificar los puntos calientes de biodiversidad con base en seis patrones de conservación (tres proactivos, uno reactivo, uno representativo y uno balanceado) y así proporcionar un conjunto de soluciones alternativas para la planeación de la protección de peces de agua dulce en la cuenca del Amazonas. Identificamos para cada patrón de manera empírica el 17% de las subcuencas que deberían conservarse y realizamos un análisis de priorización identificando amenazas actuales y a futuro (2050) (es decir, grado de deforestación y fragmentación del hábitat causado por presas). Dos de nuestros tres patrones proactivos tuvieron alrededor del 65% de su superficie cubierta por áreas protegidas; niveles altos de carácter irremplazable (60% de especies endémicas) y de representatividad (71% de la fauna ictiológica del Amazonas); y una vulnerabilidad baja actual y a futuro. Entonces, estos dos patrones parecen estar más completos para la priorización de la conservación. El futuro de las subcuencas en estos dos patrones proactivos no está amenazado por las actividades humanas a corto plazo. Además, estas subcuencas albergan la mayor parte de la biodiversidad amazónica. Se podrían conservar fácilmente si ninguna amenaza adicional sucede entre ahora y el 2050.

The Amazon basin has a freshwater fish diversity comparable to a tropical sea. Although many Amazonian fish species are popular ornamental fish across the world, the ecology of most species in their natural habitat remains poorly known (van der Sleen and Albert 2017). We report on shoaling behavior inPlatydoras hancockiiin a floodplain forest of the middle Rio Negro, Brazil. As the shoal consisted of only adult males, whereas gravid females were caught individually in nearby areas, we hypothesize that this aggregation may relate to spawning. Moreover, considering thatPlatydoras hancockiiis capable of producing sounds, it is possible that these aggregations entail the formation of a chorus-like call with the function of attracting females from a larger area.

Is there only one electric eel species? For two and a half centuries since its description by Linnaeus, Electrophorus electricus has captivated humankind by its capacity to generate strong electric discharges. Despite the importance of Electrophorus in multiple fields of science, the possibility of additional species-level diversity in the genus, which could also reveal a hidden variety of substances and bioelectrogenic functions, has hitherto not been explored. Here, based on overwhelming patterns of genetic, morphological, and ecological data, we reject the hypothesis of a single species broadly distributed throughout Greater Amazonia. Our analyses readily identify three major lineages that diverged during the Miocene and Pliocene—two of which warrant recognition as new species. For one of the new species, we recorded a discharge of 860 V, well above 650 V previously cited for Electrophorus, making it the strongest living bioelectricity generator., A single species of electric eel, Electrophorus electricus, has been described. Here, de Santana et al. show that there are three major lineages of Electrophorus distributed across Greater Amazonia and describe two new species, one with a much stronger electric discharge than was previously known.

The genus Colomesus is the sole representative of the family Tetraodontidae in the Amazon region. Here, Colomesus asellus was analyzed using conventional and molecular cytogenetic protocols. Its diploid chromosome number is 2n = 46 with 12 meta-, 10 submeta-, 16 subtelo-, and 8 acrocentric chromosomes and a fundamental number of FN = 84. An XX/XY sex chromosome system was identified. Mapping of 18S rDNA correlated with the nucleolus organizer regions (Ag-NORs) in the short arms of the 2 X chromosomes in females and in the Y chromosome in males. C-banding revealed heterochromatin in the centromeric regions of all chromosomes, except for pair 3. Prominent sex chromosome-specific heterochromatin amplification was observed, covering the short arms of the Y chromosome almost entirely. FISH with telomeric and tropomyosin (tpm1) sequences, respectively, revealed terminal signals in all chromosomes. The analysis of extended DNA fibers confirmed the colocalization and the interspersed pattern of the telomeric and tpm1 sequences. Thus, this study highlights the remarkable evolutionary dynamism presented by the Amazonian puffer fish regarding the differentiation of a heteromorphic XY sex chromosome system and a particular sex-specific amplification of rDNA sites. This is the first record of such an association in the Tetraodontidae family.

This study assessed the width of the trophic niche of four characid species (Bryconops giacopinii, Bryconops inpai, Hyphessobrycon aff. melazonatus and Iguanodectes geisleri) found under different co-occurrence circumstances in Amazonian upland streams. The study was conducted during the rainy season of 2011 at eight sites of two micro-basins of the Ducke Reserve, Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. The four species were studied in the following circumstances: only one of the species occurring in the stream; two species co-occurring; three species co-occurring. The relative volume of the food items in the fish stomachs was used to calculate Hurlbert's trophic-niche breadth for the individuals of each species in the different co-occurrence circumstances. Hyphessobrycon aff. melazonatus changed their diet when occurring in syntopy with other characid species of similar feeding habits, as shown by a significant narrowing of its trophic niche. The opportunistic habits and great feeding flexibility of these characid species make the partitioning of food resources possible and act as an important ecological mechanism that facilitates the coexistence of different species, possibly by attenuating the effects of direct competition for food. In addition, the low carrying capacity of these upland forest streams may be an important environmental factor influencing the results of this study.

Current broad geographical distributions of species can only exist because individuals dispersed from their natal sites. The Amazon’s sailfin tetra Crenuchus spilurus has a geographical range of over 3 million km2, an area 5.7 times larger than France, which includes regions of very distinct abiotic and biotic conditions. What traits may aid in explaining such a broad geographical range, and which make the range exceptional? Here we investigate the species’ ecology and behavior using several approaches: direct field observations, ecological surveys, analyses of reproductive parameters, and diet. Broad trophic niche and frequent reproduction may help explain the wide geographical range, whereas most other traits are typical of short-ranged species: small body size, specific habitat requirements, small populations, low mobility, site-fidelity, low fecundity, and large relative size at maturation. We propose that the broad geographical range of C. spilurus is better explained by passive processes related to river dynamics. Interestingly, this species is one of few strongly dichromatic species of Amazon fish, having mutual signaling during courtship, and males exerting exclusive parental care of eggs and early larval stages. While the combination of such behavioral and ecological characteristics should promote differences among lineages and (eventually) speciation, populations far apart are remarkably morphologically similar. We suggest that ecology along with sexual selection may interplay and contribute to the inter-population morphological similarity, criterion on which Crenuchus is considered a monotypic genus.

Teleocichla preta nov. sp. inhabits the rapids along the Rio Xingu and lower portion of the Rio Iriri. It is the largest species in the genus, reaching 121·3 mm standard length (LS ) while others do not reach more than 87·8 mm LS . Teleocichla preta is distinguished from all other species of Teleocichla by the unique blackish (in live specimens) or dark brown (preserved specimens) overall colouration of the body, which masks the faint vertical bars or zig-zag pattern of blotches on the flanks. Teleocichla preta also has a deeper body and a deep laterally compressed caudal peduncle, unlike any other congener, as well as a stout lower pharyngeal tooth plate bearing molariform teeth on its median area.

Hopliancistrus is an Ancistrini genus diagnosed by having few and very strong cheek odontodes on interopercular area, and a patch of strong and stiff odontodes on the antero-lateral border of the snout. The type species is herein redescribed based on types and recently collected specimens. In addition, four new congeneric species are described based on specimens collected in other parts of the Rio Xingu and Rio Tapajós basins. Hopliancistrus tricornis is distributed in the lower Rio Tapajós and is diagnosed by the possession of four branched anal-fin rays and relatively large white to yellow spots on trunk and pectoral and pelvic fins, and dark brown spots on dorsal, caudal and anal fins. Hopliancistrus munduruku is described based on specimens from Rio Jamanxim (Rio Tapajós basin) and Rio Curuá (Rio Xingu basin) and is diagnosed by the possession of five branched anal-fin rays and large yellow blotches on trunk and dark brown to black spots over the fins. Hopliancistrus wolverine is distributed in the rapids of the lower and middle Rio Xingu and is diagnosed by the possession of five branched anal-fin rays and conspicuous small yellow dots on head, trunk and fins. Hopliancistrus xikrin is distributed in medium- to small-sized tributaries of the lower portion of Rio Xingu basin, and is diagnosed by absence of contact between the transverse process of the first dorsal-fin pterygiophore and the transverse process of the second pterygiophore. Hopliancistrus xavante is distributed in the tributaries of upper Rio Xingu basin, and is diagnosed by having a thick skin covering the nuchal plate; by having large white spots on trunk and fins; and by the possession of five branched anal-fin rays. An osteological description and a key for species identification are also provided.

A new species of Paralithoxus is described from the Ajarani River, a small tributary of the Branco River basin, Roraima State, Brazilian Amazon. The genus Paralithoxus comprises species described from the Essequibo drainage in Guyana, Approuague and Maroni in French Guiana, Suriname River in Surinam, and more recently, from Jari and Amapá rivers, in Brazil. Despite occurring in a rock-bottomed fast-flowing stream as the other species of Paralithoxus, this is the first species of the genus collected at 900 m altitude, in the Serra da Mocidade highlands, an isolated and poorly accessible small mountain chain at the southern border of the Guiana Shield. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by having truncate teeth, color pattern with green spots on dark olive-brown background, alternating dark and light blotches on fins and by the pelvic fin being as long as or longer than the pectoral fin. Sex dimorphism of the species is described. Comments on morphology and osteology are provided and compared with congeners. RESUMO Uma nova espécie de Paralithoxus é descrita do rio Ajarani, um pequeno tributário da bacia do rio Branco, Estado de Roraima, Amazônia Brasileira. O gênero Paralithoxus é composto por espécies descritas para as drenagens do Essequibo na Guiana, Approuague e Maroni na Guiana Francesa, rio Suriname no Suriname, e mais recentemente, para os rios Jari e Amapá, no Brasil. Apesar de ocorrer em pequenos riachos com fundo rochoso e correnteza forte como o restante dos representantes de Paralithoxus, esta é a primeira espécie do gênero coletada a 900 m de altitude, na Serra da Mocidade, uma pequena cadeia de montanhas localizada em uma área isolada e de difícil acesso na porção sul do Escudo das Guianas. A nova espécie distingue-se de suas congêneres pela presença de dentes truncados, pelo padrão de coloração com manchas verde claras sobre fundo oliva-marrom escuro, alternando manchas claras e escuras nas nadadeiras e pelo comprimento relativo da nadadeira pélvica igual ou maior que o comprimento da nadadeira peitoral. O dimorfismo sexual da espécie é descrito. Comentários sobre a morfologia e osteologia da espécie são feitos e comparados com suas congêneres.

Chalceus guaporensis is an endemic fish to the upper Madeira River whereas C. epakros is widespread in many rivers of the central and lower portions of the Amazon Basin, middle and upper Orinoco River Basin, the Essequibo River in Guyana and in the Nanay River in northern Peru. According to literature, both species do not occur in syntopy. We carried out ichthyological surveys along the Madeira River Basin and its rapids, and data on abundance, diet and habitat use were obtained for both species. Chalceus guaporensis and C. epakros are morphologically similar, occupying floodplain habitats and exploiting similar food resources. The former predominated upstream from the Jirau Fall, whereas the latter had most of its abundance bellow the last fall of the Madeira River; both species co-occurred along part of the rapids stretch and in the Machado River, but with strongly uneven abundances. This pattern may have developed in the past by speciation regarding the presence of the falls, while co-occurrence of the two species seems to be regulated by competitive interactions or maintained by slight differences in environmental requirements nowadays. The recent disruption of the Madeira River by two run-of-river dams built in cascade submerged a large portion of the rapids stretch and substituted it by semi-lenthic habitats created by the dam reservoirs, together with the construction of a fish passage. These environmental changes may allow the invasion of the upper reaches of the Madeira River by C. epakros, and disturb the population of endemic C. guaporensis. RESUMO Chalceus guaporensis é descrita como uma espécie endêmica do alto rio Madeira, enquanto C. epakros está amplamente distribuída em rios das porções central e inferior da bacia Amazônica, no médio e alto rio Orinoco, e nos rios Essequibo, na Guiana, e Nanay, no norte do Peru. A literatura não registra essas espécies como sintópicas. Expedições ictiológicas realizadas ao longo do rio Madeira e suas corredeiras nos deram a oportunidade de registrar a presença, abundância, habitat e dieta utilizadas por essas espécies. Chalceus guaporensis e C. epakros são muito similares morfologicamente, ocupam habitats inundáveis e apresentam espectro alimentar semelhante. A primeira espécie predominou a montante da cachoeira Jirau, enquanto que a segunda teve a maior parte de sua abundância registrada à jusante das cachoeiras do rio Madeira. Ambas espécies coocorreram ao longo de parte do trecho de corredeiras e no rio Machado, mas com abundâncias muito desiguais. Esse padrão pode ter se desenvolvido no passado, por especiação, em função da presença das corredeiras, enquanto a coocorrência das duas espécies parece ser regulada por interações competitivas ou mantida por diferenças sutis em requisitos ecológicos no tempo atual. O recente barramento do rio Madeira por duas hidrelétricas construídas em cascata submergiu uma grande porção do trecho de corredeiras e o substituiu por habitats semilênticos, criados pelos reservatórios das hidrelétricas a fio d’água, juntamente com a construção de uma passagem para peixes. Essas alterações ambientais podem permitir que C. epakros invada o trecho superior da bacia do rio Madeira, com possíveis impactos negativos sobre a população da espécie endêmica C. guaporensis.

Rapids and waterfalls, and their associated fauna and flora are in peril. With the construction of each new hydroelectric dam, more rapids and waterfalls are destroyed, leading to the disappearance of associated fauna and flora. Areas of rapids harbor distinct, highly endemic rheophilic fauna and flora adapted to an extreme environment. Rheophilic habitats also have disjunct distribution both within and across rivers. Rheophilic habitats thus represent islands of suitable habitat separated by stretches of unsuitable habitat. In this study, we investigated to what extent, if any, species of cichlid and anostomid fishes associated with rheophilic habitats were structured among the rapids of Araguaia River in the Brazilian Amazon. We tested both for population structuring as well as non-random distribution of lineages among rapids. Eight of the nine species had multiple lineages, five of these nine species were structured, and three of the eight species with multiple lineages showed non-random distribution of lineages among rapids. These results demonstrate that in addition to high levels of endemicism of rheophilic fishes, different rapids even within the same river are occupied by different lineages. Rheophilic species and communities occupying different rapids are, therefore, not interchangeable, and this realization must be taken into account when proposing mitigatory/compensatory measures in hydroelectric projects, and in conservation planning. © 2018 Hrbek, Meliciano, Zuanon and Farias.

Some of them (e. g. species- area, species-energy, environment-energy, water-energy, terrestrial primary productivity, environmental spatial heterogeneity, and climatic heterogeneity) are known to explain species richness patterns of terrestrial organisms, especially when they are combined. For aquatic organisms, however, it is unclear if these hypotheses can be useful to explain for these purposes. Therefore, we used a selection model approach to assess the predictive capacity of such hypotheses, and to determine which of them (combined or not) would be the most appropriate to explain the fish species distribution in small Brazilian streams. We perform the Akaike's information criteria for models selections and the eigenvector analysis to control the special autocorrelation. The spatial structure was equal to 0.453, Moran's I, and require 11 spatial filters. All models were significant and had adjustments ranging from 0.370 to 0.416 with strong spatial component (ranging from 0.226 to 0.369) and low adjustments for environmental data (ranging from 0.001 to 0.119) We obtained two groups of hypothesis are able to explain the richness pattern (1) water-energy, temporal productivity-heterogeneity (AIC = 4498.800) and (2) water-energy, temporal productivity-heterogeneity and area (AIC = 4500.400). We conclude that the fish richness patterns in small Brazilian streams are better explained by a combination of Water-Energy + Productivity + Temporal Heterogeneity hypotheses and not by just one. Monthly (April 2009 to May 2010) bottom-trawl sampling for Brachyplatystoma species along the rapids stretch of the Madeira River in Brazil revealed that Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii larvae and juveniles were present in low abundances in all areas and during all hydrological periods. The presence of larvae and juveniles throughout the hydrological cycle suggests asynchronous spawning in the headwaters of the Madeira River.

The cichlid Mesonauta festivus is common and abundant among macrophyte stands along a large geographical range of the Amazonas and Parana-Paraguay basins, in South America. This broad geographical range highlights the species’ dispersion ability, which can be attributed to specific biological and behavioral traits. However, the dispersion ability does not account for the broad geographical range alone, as the species must be able to establish populations in a range of environments, which include marginal areas of large rivers with different water types, floodplain lakes, and small terra-firme streams. In this work we investigated the specie’s ecology, biological traits and behavior in order to understand what and how its traits may have allowed it to attain such broad geographical range and aid in establishing local populations. Regarding its dispersion ability we stress the capability of swimming in the pelagic region, which is remarkable for this species and uncommon among Neotropical cichlids. Its vagility is high even when juveniles are under parental care. Regarding population establishment, the high environmental tolerance stands out, allowing the species to live under strikingly different abiotic conditions. In addition, the small size of first sexual maturation and its capability of spawning along the whole hydrologic cycle (apparently not associated to a specific environmental cue) may also facilitate the establishment of populations into new environments. Moreover, the behavior of mimicking dead leaves, which is mainly performed by juveniles, may lessen predation pressures. Under an eco-evolutionary perspective, the traits highlighted in this work may buffer selective pressures experienced by populations in different biotic and/or abiotic conditions, which may also favor the increasing of the geographical range by allowing the evolutionary lineage to remain similar even in disconnected and/or striking different environments.

A new species of Hyphessobrycon Durbin is described from the Rio Teles Pires, Rio Tapajos basin, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The new species can be distinguished from all congeners, except for Hyphessobrycon bifasciatus, H. cyanotaenia, H. heliacus, H. igneus, H. loweae, and H. peugeoti by having the distal border of the anal fin slightly convex to straight in adult males, without a distinct anterior lobe, and with last unbranched ray and first to second branched ray shorter than the subsequent branched rays. The new species can be distinguished from H. bifasciatus, H. cyanotaenia, H. heliacus, H. igneus, H. loweae, and H. peugeoti by the presence of octa- to decacuspid teeth on both dentary and inner premaxillary series (vs. tri- to heptacuspid dentary and premaxillary teeth) and dark chromatophores concentrated on the posterior border of the body scales, forming a reticulated pattern (vs. reticulated pattern absent). The psammophilic trichomycterid genus Typhlobelus is rediagnosed on the basis of additional synapomorphic characters, including: 1) the premaxilla displaced posteriorly, and connected to shaft of the mesethmoid rather than to its anterior tip; 2) the premaxilla with complex tridimensional shape, with a large dorsal process directed mesially and bearing teeth (when present) on the lateral end only; 3) the dentary portion of the coronoid process expanded into a broad plate; 4) the palatine club-shaped and oriented obliquely relative to the longitudinal axis of the skull; 5) the semi-discoidal anterior portion of the mesethmoid; 6) the laminar anterior ascending process of the quadrate lacking a cartilaginous tip; 7) hyomandibula with a long posterior process; 8) the neural arch of the Weberian complex ring-like and forming two large dorsal foramina at its border with the supraoccipital; and 9) the basibranchials and hypobranchials poorly differentiated or absent. This study aimed to characterize the food intake by the fish assemblage inhabiting aquatic macrophytes stands, evaluating the changes in food availability among the periods of the hydrologic cycle and the trophic responses of the fish assemblage along with food availability. Fish sampling was conducted in stands of aquatic macrophytes (predominantly Paspalum repens, Poaceae) along banks of the Trombetas River during the four hydrologic periods (rising, high, receding, and low water level) that represent different phenological conditions of the habitat. The food consumption by the fish assemblage was analyzed for 41 species with stomach contents. The assemblage fed mainly on aquatic insects, periphytic algae and detritus. Food availability analysis showed that food resources changed among periods. Fifteen species were present in more than one period and most of those species showed dietary changes along with the hydrologic cycle, feeding mainly on invertebrates in the rising water period and periphytic algae and detritus in receding and low water periods. Only four species showed sufficient numbers to be analyzed in relation to diet and food availability along the at least three hydrologic periods, two of which showed a positive correlation between diet and food availability for three of the four periods; the other two species did not show this correlation, and presented omnivorous habits. In all cases, the selectivity values for the most important food items were near zero, indicating that intake was not motivated by feeding preference. Our results suggest that both trophic plasticity and omnivorous diets are important adaptations for species that inhabit temporally variable habitats such as aquatic macrophytes stands.

This study compares the diets of the giant otter and the Neotropical otter, two Lutrinae species which feed mainly on fish. The study was carried out through the analyses of faecal samples collected between 2006 and 2008 (82 giant otter and 75 Neotropical otter) in the Jau National Park. The giant otter feeds mainly on Cichlidae, Erythrinidae and Characidae, while the Neotropical otter consumes Doradidae, Loricariidae and Cichlidae. The two otter species had low diet similarity (Pianka’s Index = 0.16). The giant otter consumed larger fish than the Neotropical otter, which probably explores shallow river parts in search of small catfish. Prey other than fish were more frequent in the diet of the Neotropical otter, whereas giant otters ate a greater diversity of fish families. Increasing knowledge of the feeding habits and interactions of these two top-order predators is vital to determine appropriate protection and management policies.

This study assessed the diet of two poorly known syntopic fish species of the family Crenuchidae, Characidium aff. declivirostre and Leptocharacidium omospilus, in a Presidente Figueiredo´ rocky stream, Amazonas, Brazil. The stomach contents were analyzed and their Frequency of Occurrence (FO %) and Relative Volume (Vol %) were combined in a Feeding Index (IAi). We examined 20 individuals of C. aff. declivirostre and 23 of L. omospilus. The Morisita-Horn Index was used to estimate the overlap between the diets of these species. Immature insects were the most valuable items consumed by both fish species. The diet of C. aff. declivirostre was mainly composed of larvae and pupae of Chironomidae, while L. omospilus predominantly consumed larvae of Hydroptilidae, Hydropyschidae and Pyralidae. Thus, both species were classified as autochthonous insectivorous. Characidium aff. declivirostre was considered a more specialized species, probably reflecting lower feeding plasticity or the use of more restricted microhabitats compared to L. omospilus. When the food items were analyzed at the family taxonomic level, the diet overlap between these species was considered moderate (Morisita-Horn Index = 0.4). However, a more thorough analysis, at the genus level, indicates a very low diet overlap. Therefore, we conclude that the feeding segregation between C. aff. declivirostre and L. omospilus may favor their co-existence, despite their high phylogenetic closeness. Resumo O presente estudo investigou a dieta de duas espécies de peixes pouco conhecidas da família Crenuchidae, Characidium aff. declivirostre e Leptocharacidium omospilus, sintópicas de um riacho de corredeira do município de Presidente Figueiredo, Estado do Amazonas, Brasil. O conteúdo estomacal de cada exemplar foi analisado pelos métodos de Frequência de Ocorrência (FO%) e Volume Relativo (Vol%) e, posteriormente, combinados para o cálculo do Índice Alimentar (IAi). Foram analisados 20 indivíduos de C. aff. declivirostre e 23 de L. omospilus. A sobreposição entre a dieta das duas espécies foi estimada pelo Índice Simplificado de Morisita-Horn. Insetos imaturos foram os principais itens consumidos por ambas as espécies. A dieta de C. aff. declivirostre mostrou preferência acentuada por larvas e pupas de Chironomidae, enquanto que a dieta de L. omospilus concentrou-se em larvas de Hydroptilidae, de Hydropyschidae e de Pyralidae. Portanto, as espécies foram classificadas troficamente como insetívoras consumidoras de itens autóctones. A dieta de C. aff. declivirostre foi mais especializada, o que pode ser reflexo de uma menor plasticidade alimentar ou do uso de microhabitats mais restritos, quando comparado a L. omospilus. Ao analisar os itens alimentares em nível taxonômico de família, a sobreposição alimentar foi considerada moderada (Índice de Morisita-Horn = 0,4). Entretanto, análises mais refinadas, em nível de gênero, indicaram sobreposição muito baixa na dieta. Conclui-se que tal segregação alimentar pode favorecer a coexistência de C. aff. declivirostre e L. omospilus, mesmo que sejam espécies filogeneticamente próximas.

Bunocephalus is the most species-rich Aspredinidae genus, corresponding to a monophyletic clade with 13 valid species. However, many species have their classification put in question. Here, we analyzed individuals from four Amazonian populations of Bunocephalus coracoideus by cytogenetic and molecular procedures. The geographic distribution, genetic distances and karyotype data indicate that each population represents an Evolutionary Significant Unit (ESU). Cytogenetic markers showed distinct 2n and karyotype formulas, as well as different numbers and locations of the rDNA sites among ESUs. One of such populations (ESU-D) highlighted an extensive polymorphic condition, with several cytotypes probably due to chromosomal rearrangements and meiotic non-disjunctions. This resulted in several aneuploid karyotypes, which was also supported by the mapping of telomeric sequences. Phylograms based on Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Neighbor Joining (NJ) analyses grouped each ESU on particular highly supported clades, with the estimation of evolutionary divergence indicating values being higher than 3.8-12.3% among them. Our study reveals a huge degree of chromosomal and genetic diversity in B. coracoideus and highly points to the existence of four ESUs in allopatric and sympatric speciation processes. The natural history of Pygidianops amphioxus de Pinna and Kirovskyi (Neotropical Ichthyology 9:493–504, 2011), a highly specialized sand-dwelling catfish species, was studied based on underwater observations in a small forest stream in the central Amazon. Information on the feeding and reproductive biology was obtained by means of analyses of preserved specimens. These miniature catfishes remained buried in the sand at the bottom of the stream and were never observed swimming in open water. The catfish consumed small benthic invertebrates, particularly Chironomidae larvae and Harpacticoida copepods, which were most likely captured by suction feeding inside the sand banks. Pygidianops amphioxus displays sexual dimorphism in the shape of the urogenital papilla and in the body length, with adult females being relatively longer than males. Sexually mature females were found throughout the year and carried a small number of proportionally very large oocytes. A short duration (24 h) experiment conducted in aquaria revealed that these small catfishes exhibit the predominantly nocturnal habits typical of most Siluriformes.

Peckoltia is one of the 26 genera that constitute the Ancistrini. Although Peckoltia has been reviewed recently, its taxonomic status is not fully resolved and not easily distinguished from Hemiancistrus. Neither Peckoltia nor Hemiancistrus have any recognized synapomorphies supporting their monophyly. In this paper we describe a new species of Ancistrini from Rio Xingu drainage, Para State, Brazil, and assign it to Peckoltia based on its deep body, presence of large odontodes on the cheeks, and lack of carenate plates on the body. The new species can be easily distinguished from all its congeners by its dorsal-fin color pattern (presence of dark thin stripes in the interradial membranes parallel to fin rays that fragment into small spots in larger specimens vs. bands, spots, dots, or membranes with a darker coloration in all other species). Synbranchidae belongs to the Synbranchiformes and occurs in Africa, Asia, Australia, Mexico, and Central and South America. This family comprises four genera: Synbranchus, Ophisternon, Monopterus, and Macrotrema. Only two are known from the neotropical region, Ophisternon and Synbranchus. According to current classification, Synbranchus has three valid species: S. marmoratus (Bloch 1795), S. madeirae (Rosen and Rumney 1972), and S. lampreia (Favorito, Zanata and Assumpção 2005). Thus the present research is aimed to cytogenetically characterize (by classical and molecular methods) two syntopic species-S. aff. lampreia and S. madeirae-from the central Amazon basin to validate the taxonomy of both species and provide a revisionary discussion on the cytogenetics of Synbranchiformes. Synbranchus aff. lampreia was found to possess 2n = 44 chromosomes (6 m + 2st + 36a, NF = 50), while S. madeirae had 2n = 46 chromosomes (6 m + 2st + 38a, NF = 52). Constitutive heterochromatin was dominant in the centromeric and terminal regions of most of the chromosomes in both species, although the precise distribution patterns were species-specific. The nucleolar organizing region was single in S. aff. lampreia and multiple in S. madeirae, as indicated by both AgNO(3) and hybridization using 18S rDNA probes. The 5S rDNA sites were located interstitially on the long arms of an acrocentric pair in both species, and the telomeric probe did not show any interstitial sites in either species. These data indicate the occurrence of interspecific karyotypic variability in Synbranchus and suggest that taxonomic review for this genus is necessary.

The recovery of giant otter populations after the hunting prohibition and restriction of the pelt trade resulted in more frequent conflicts with fishermen. In this study, fisherman–giant otter conflicts were analyzed in the Uacari Sustainable Development Reserve, where giant otters are accused of interfering with fisheries by eating the fish (predation), frightening the fish away (local interference), and damaging fishing equipment (direct interference). Interference by predation was analyzed by evaluating overlap in fish species consumption between humans (measured by subsistence and commercial catches) and giant otters. The giant otter diet was assessed from fecal samples, and the human diet through questionnaires. Local and direct interferences were analyzed through fish samples using gillnets and comparing capture efficiency with and without giant otters’ presence. The overlap between human and giant otter diets was low (0.37), varied seasonally, and was smaller in the low water (0.24) than in the high water period (0.60), when both species tend to be more generalists. Overlap between fish species consumed by giant otters and those exploited by commercial fisheries was small (0.34). Giant otter presence during the experimental fishing was low (9.5%), restricted to the high water period, and did not significantly reduce the captures (U = 13, P = 0.61). The low overlap in diet may be a result of differences in preferences and fishing strategies. The conflict between giant otters and fishermen is greater in the high water period, when the income of the fisheries decreases; however, the conflict seems to be mainly motivated by the resident's prejudice against giant otters. Resumo A recuperacao de populacoes de ariranhas, apos a proibicao da caca e do comercio de peles, tem tornado mais constantes os conflitos com pescadores. Neste estudo analisou-se o conflito entre pescadores e ariranhas na Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustentavel Uacari, onde as ariranhas sao acusadas de interferirem na pesca por comerem (predacao) e espantarem (interferencia local) os peixes, e danificarem apetrechos de pesca (interferencia direta). A interferencia por predacao foi analisada atraves da sobreposicao alimentar entre as especies de peixes consumidas por humanos (capturas comerciais e de subsistencia) e ariranhas. A dieta das ariranhas foi avaliada por amostras de fezes, e a dos humanos por entrevistas. As interferencias local e direta foram analisadas atraves de pescarias experimentais com malhadeiras, comparando-se a eficiencia de captura entre eventos com e sem a presenca de ariranhas. A sobreposicao entre as dietas de humanos e ariranhas foi baixa (0,37), variou temporalmente, e foi menor na seca (0,24) que na cheia (0,60), quando ambas as especies tendem a ser mais generalistas. A sobreposicao entre os peixes consumidos pelas ariranhas e aqueles explorados pela pesca comercial local foi pequena (0,34). A presenca de ariranhas durante as pescarias experimentais foi baixa (9,5%), so ocorreu na cheia, e nao interferiu significativamente na eficiencia das capturas (U = 13, P = 0,61). A baixa sobreposicao nas dietas pode ser resultado de diferencas nas preferencias alimentares e estrategias de pesca. O conflito entre ariranhas e pescadores e intensificado na cheia, quando o rendimento das pescarias diminui naturalmente, mas parece ser motivado principalmente pelo preconceito dos moradores com relacao as ariranhas.

The reproduction trade-off for an animal is a conflicting choice in which resources (e.g., time and/or energy) allocated to one reproduction trait (e.g., parental care) become unavailable to other traits (e.g., future reproduction events). Here, we tested three hypotheses related to the parental care of the Amazonian dwarf cichlid Apistogramma hippolytae in its natural habitat of Central Amazonia: (1) brood-caring females have a lower feeding frequency than individuals that are not involved in this behavior; (2) females that spend more time on nest defense have lower feeding rates; and (3) females can recognize the species that present the greatest danger to its offspring and move farther from the nest to chase away these piscivorous fishes. We also described for the first time the reproductive behavior (including courtship) and parental care of this species. The results showed that maternal care produces a reduction in the rate of feeding of mothers, a greater amount of time is spent chasing invaders away from the nest, and reproductive females are able to distinguish species-specific predators. These observations support the hypotheses of this study and also suggest a trade-off between current and future reproduction events.

Lebiasina yepezi, a new Lebiasininae with a conspicuous color pattern, is described. The new species is endemic of the headwaters of the rio Negro, rio Branco, and rio Orinoco in the Serra Parima-Tapirapecó Mountains, at the border of Brazil and Venezuela. The new species is readily distinguished from all other Lebiasininae by the presence of four black longitudinal stripes on the trunk, and the triangular shaped dorsal surface of the mesethmoid, lacking lateral projections. The unusual color pattern is contrasted with those of other lebiasinin, as well as members of the pyrrhulinin genus Nannostomus. A close relationship between Lebiasina yepezi and the Gran Sabana (Venezuela) species is suggested based in color pattern features. The present contribution corresponds to a further refutation of the type locality of L. intermedia, as suggested on its description, since Lebiasinins, except L. bimaculata, L. boruca, and L. festae, do not occur in low land waters. Lebiasina yepezi, um novo Lebiasininae com um conspícuo padrão de colorido, é descrito. A nova espécie é endêmica das cabeceiras do rio Negro, rio Branco e rio Orinoco, na Serra Parima-Tapirapecó, ao longo da fronteira entre Brasil e Venezuela. A nova espécie é prontamente diferenciada das demais espécies pela presença de quatro faixas longitudinais escuras ao longo do corpo, e a superfície dorsal do mesetmoide com o formato triangular, não apresentando projeções laterais. O padrão de colorido incomum é comparado com o dos demais Lebiasininae e também com o dos Pyrrhulininae do gênero Nannostomus. Uma próxima relação é proposta entre Lebiasina yepezi e as espécies da Gran Sabana (Venezuela) com base em caracteres de colorido. A presente contribuição corresponde a mais uma refutação da localidade-tipo de L. intermedia conforme sugerida na descrição daquela espécie, uma vez que os lebiasiníneos, com exceção de L. bimaculata, L. boruca e L. festae, não ocorrem em rios de terras baixas.

A new species of Platydoras is described from the rio Xingu Basin, Brazil. Platydoras birindellii is distinguished from congeners by having gas bladder simple (vs. with posterior secondary chamber) and dorsal and caudal fins uniformly dusky (vs. with distinct marks composed of dark broad band or blotch on central portion of dorsal fin and pair of dark broad stripes on caudal fin, one central to each lobe). Platydoras birindellii shares a simple gas bladder with the sister taxon to Platydoras,Centrochir crocodili, a monotypic genus endemic to the Magdalena Basin. With respect to the caudal skeleton, the parhypural is incompletely fused to hypurals 1+2 in P. birindellii, a condition that is intermediate between those of Centrochir (parhypural typically separated from hypurals 1+2 by distinct suture) and Platydoras (parhypural typically fully fused to hypurals 1+2). Platydoras birindellii is commonly found in rocky clearwater rapids and apparently endemic to the middle and upper portions of the Xingu draining the Brazilian Shield.

Monocirrhus polyacanthus (Polycentridae) is a remarkable leaf-mimicking fish that inhabits streams, lake and river margins along the Amazon basin. Despite its obvious predatory habits and being frequently present in the international aquarium trade, little is known about its diet under natural conditions. We examined 35 specimens of leaf fish (28.5-82.0 mm SL), of which 19 had food the stomach. Thirty-three preys were found in the stomach contents, 19 of which were measured (2.0-33.0 mm total length). Up to five preys were found in the stomach contents of a single leaf fish specimen. The diet of the leaf fish was constituted by fish (63.15% FO, n = 12) and invertebrates (36.3% FO, n = 4); fish and invertebrate preys occurred together in three stomachs (15.8% FO). Of the 33 prey found in the stomachs, 21 were fish and 12 invertebrates. Among the consumed prey fishes, Characiformes and Perciformes represented 76.1% and 14.2% respectively. Characidae was the most commonly recorded prey family, followed by Lebiasinidae. Invertebrates were represented by shrimps (Decapoda) and insects (Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Ephemeroptera and Odonata). There was a positive relation between the size of the leaf fish specimens and of its consumed preys. The combination of leaf fish's visually effective body camouflage and the reduced activity of the characids at crepuscular hours probably allow the capture of such fast moving preys. The coiled position of the fishes found in the stomach of M. polyacanthus possibly allowed the accommodation of more than one prey simultaneously, which seems to be important for predators that consume proportionally large preys that are captured only occasionally. © 2010 Sociedade Brasileira de Ictiologia.

Karyotypes of six cichlid species of the genus Crenicichla were investigated. The species C. cincta, C. inpa, C. reticulata, C. lugubris, and C. cf. johanna were collected from Amazon basin, and C. britskii was collected from the Paraná-Paraguai basin. All of the analysed species showed 2n = 48 chromosomes; however, C. cincta, C. lugubris, C. cf. johanna, and C. britskii had a karyotype formula of 8M-SM+40ST-A, FN = 56, while C. inpa and C. reticulata exhibited the formula 6M-SM+42ST-A, FN = 54. Analysis of active Ag-NORs revealed two NOR-bearing chromosomes in all species; however, theses cistrons were located on different chromosome pairs and/or in different chromosome locations in each species. This condition bears evolutionary significance, since it is the main chromosome marker of the process of karyotypic evolution among the species of the genus Crenicichla. In general, C-banding revealed a similar constitutive heterochromatin pattern in all species, although it was possible to detect some features that led us to infer that Crenicichla also presents a species-specific heterochromatin pattern. Resemblance to dead leaves is a well known type of camouflage recorded for several small vertebrates that dwell in the leaf and root litter on the ground. We present here instances of such resemblance in three species of nocturnal fishes (Siluriformes and Gymnotiformes) that spend the daytime among submersed root-tangle with leaf litter in Amazonian streams. All three species are very difficult to spot visually, due both to their shape and colors which blend with the substrate, as well as to the heterogeneous nature of their cover. Two species were recorded to lie on their sides, which adds to their resemblance to dead leaves. When disturbed, one species may drift like a waterlogged leaf, whereas another moves upwards the root-tangle, exposing its fore body above the water surface. We regard their leaf-like shapes, cryptic colors, and escape movements as a convergence in defensive responses to visually hunting aquatic vertebrates, most likely diurnal predaceous fishes. Semelhança com folhas mortas é um tipo bem conhecido de camuflagem, presente em diversos pequenos vertebrados que vivem em meio à serapilheira do chão da floresta. Apresentamos aqui exemplos deste tipo de semelhança em três espécies de peixes de hábitos noturnos (Siluriformes e Gymnotiformes) que permanecem durante o dia em meio a aglomerados de raízes e folhas submersas em igarapés amazônicos. As três espécies são difíceis de localizar visualmente, tanto devido ao formato e cores, que se confundem com o substrato, como pela heterogeneidade estrutural dos seus abrigos. Duas espécies foram observadas deitadas de lado durante o dia, o que aumenta sua semelhança com folhas mortas. Quando perturbada, uma das espécies deixa-se levar à deriva como uma folha semi-encharcada, ao passo que outra espécie se desloca para cima, nos aglomerados de raízes, expondo a porção anterior do corpo acima da superfície da água. Consideramos o formato semelhante a uma folha, as cores crípticas e os movimentos de fuga, como uma convergência de respostas defensivas a vertebrados aquáticos que caçam visualmente orientados, provavelmente peixes predadores de hábitos diurnos.

Em estudos sobre distribuição espacial, alimentação e estrutura de comunidades de espécies de peixes de pequeno porte em igarapés, são aplicados alguns métodos de coleta específicos para esses ambientes. Este trabalho teve como objetivo principal comparar dois métodos de coleta, um ativo (puçá e peneira) e outro passivo (armadilhas). A coleta com puçá foi mais eficiente, tanto em número de espécies registradas, quanto em número de indivíduos capturados. Houve uma taxa de escape aparentemente elevada nas armadilhas, assim como a predação de parte dos peixes capturados por jejus (Erythrinus erythrinus) dentro das armadilhas, o que pode ter contribuído para a menor eficiência desse método. A baixa similaridade entre os pares de amostras coletadas com os dois métodos em cada igarapé indica a necessidade de utilizar diferentes métodos de coleta para assegurar a efetividade das amostragens. Entretanto, o menor impacto ao ambiente causado com o uso de armadilhas pode ser especialmente conveniente para estudos em Unidades de Conservação, desde que o esforço de coleta seja adequadamente dimensionado. Studies of spatial distribution, feeding habits and community structure of small size fish species in forest streams usually employ some specific collecting methods related to the size and structural characteristics of these aquatic environments. This study aimed to compare the efficiency of two fishing methods, one active (hand net and sieve) and one passive (minnow traps). Collecting with hand nets yielded a higher number of fish species and individuals. There was apparently a high escape rate in the minnow traps, as well as some losses of collected specimens by predation inside the traps by the carnivorous Erythrinus erythrinus, that may have resulted in the lesser efficiency of the passive fishing method. The low similarity values observed in the samples obtained with the two fishing methods at each stream indicate that is necessary to combine different sampling procedures to ensure its effectiveness. Nevertheless, the lower habitat disturbance resulting with the use of minnow traps may be especially useful for studies developed in protected areas, with a proper adjustment of the sampling effort.

Synchronized bipedal movements of the pelvic fins provide propulsion (punting) during displacement on the substrate in batoids with benthic locomotion. In skates (Rajidae) this mechanism is mainly generated by the crural cartilages. Although lacking these anatomical structures, some stingray species show modifications of their pelvic fins to aid in benthic locomotion. This study describes the use of the pelvic fins for locomotory performance and body reorientation in the freshwater stingray Potamotrygon motoro (Müller & Henle, 1841) during foraging. Pelvic fin movements of juvenile individuals of P. motoro were recorded in ventral view by a high-speed camera at 250-500 fields/s-1. Potamotrygon motoro presented synchronous, alternating and unilateral movements of the pelvic fins, similar to those reported in skates. Synchronous movements were employed during straightforward motion for pushing the body off the substrate as well as for strike feeding, whereas unilateral movements were used to maneuver the body to the right or left during both locomotion and prey capture. Alternating movements of the pelvic fins are similar to bipedal movements in terrestrial and semi-aquatic tetrapods. The pelvic fins showed coordinated movements during feeding even when stationary, indicating that they have an important function in maintaining body posture (station holding) during prey capture and manipulation. The use of pelvic fins during prey stalking may be advantageous because it results in less substrate disturbance when compared to movements generated by pectoral fin undulation. The biological material is distributed into 1,067 species, 21,963 lots and 149,192 specimens, gathered during five years of work. From this collection, 99% of the lots have georeferenced location, and 94% of the species were sampled in the Madeira River basin, the largest tributary in flow, drainage area and sediment discharge of the Amazonas River basin. Among the 1,008 species collected in the Madeira River basin, 80% were reviewed by Brazilian, North American and French experts, and represents the highest richness among tributaries of the Amazonas River and other rivers worldwide. Fish collection from the Madeira River basin deposited in the ichthyological collection of the Universidade Federal de Rondônia accounts for about 75% of the lots and specimens of fish from that basin available for study in collections worldwide. Popularly known as pencilfishes the vast majority of these species lives in the flooded forests of the Amazon basin and are popular in the ornamental trade. Among the lebiasinids, it is the only genus to have undergone more than one taxonomic revision. Even so, it still possesses poorly defined species. Here, we report the results of an application of DNA barcoding to the identification of pencilfishes and highlight the deeply divergent clades within four nominal species. We surveyed the sequence variation in the mtDNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene among 110 individuals representing 14 nominal species that were collected from several rivers along the Amazon basin. The mean Kimura-2-parameter distances within species and genus were 2% and 19,0%, respectively. The deep lineage divergences detected in N. digrammus, N. trifasciatus, N. unifasciatus and N. eques suggest the existence of hidden diversity in Nannostomus species. For N. digrammus and N. trifasciatus, in particular, the estimated divergences in some lineages were so high that doubt about their conspecific status is raised.
