The shorthead drum Larimus breviceps has an important role in the subsistence of local communities. However, studies addressing the trophic ecology of this species are still scarce. Here we present further information on the trophic ecology and ecomorphology of L. breviceps, including dietary analyses, carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes compositions (δ13C and δ15N), and morphometric measurements on a seasonal basis. Specimens were captured in the Northeastern Brazil from February to November 2017 by the local artisanal shrimp fisheries. A total of 46 individuals (27 juveniles and 19 adults) were randomly subsampled for ecomorphological analysis. Significant differences in the ecological attributes between ontogeny were found for peduncle and body flatness indexes. A total of 479 stomachs of L. breviceps were analyzed. The fish total length ranged from 6.3 to 19.2 cm. Nine prey categories were defined for L. breviceps. Sergestidae shrimps were the main prey. The diet composition from the multivariate technique of non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination displayed a different pattern for juveniles and adults. A subsample of 40 individuals (dry season = 20; rainy season = 20) were selected for stable isotope analysis. Mean values of δ13C and δ15N were different by size in the dry season. This information improves the general knowledge and ecological data on bycatch species, as well as may give support to management initiatives, potentially associated to trophic models, or may be considered into the design of Bycatch Reduction Devices (BRD), taking into account the current paradigm of the Ecosystemic Approach to Fishery (EFA).

Despite being an important source of wealth and food security for many countries, most of the small tuna stocks in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea remain unassessed. In this study, we summarized the current state of knowledge of this group of species reviewing the information available on life history parameters, stock structure, historical catches, size frequency distributions and current knowledge of stock status. In relation to the life history parameters, data are overall scarce and mainly missing in the Eastern Atlantic where small tunas are relevant in small-scale fisheries. From the 27 defined stocks, only 11 have been quantitatively assessed. From those, the Northwest wahoo and the Southeast little tunny stocks may be experiencing overfishing, deserving priority management attention. Length-based rather than catch-based methods showed a more promising applicability for small tunas, although representative length distributions from the catch are scarce for some stocks. Historical catch time series for small tuna are still incomplete, however, the last two decades are the most accurate and could be considered in future assessment methods. The gaps of knowledge related mainly to life history parameters and historical catches are the main reason why most of these stocks remain unassessed and unmanaged.

The shorthead drum Larimus breviceps is one of the main bycatch species of the shrimp fisheries in Brazil. However, studies addressing the biology and fisheries impacts on this species are still scarce. Here we describe the main aspects of the reproductive biology and the female gonadal development of L. breviceps on Paraiba, northeast Brazil. The reproductive tract was described by macroscopic and microscopic analysis. The ovaries were composed by oogonia, pre-vitellogenic, vitellogenic, mature, and atretic oocytes. A total of 970 individuals (549 females and 421 males) were caught between December 2016 and November 2017 through beach seining. The total length (TL) varied from 4.2 to 23.0 cm. Females dominated over males (1 female: 0.77 male). The length–weight relationship did not differ between the sexes, presenting a positive allometric growth. The following stages were thus defined for females: immature, initial development, advanced development, mature, and regressing. The period of highest reproductive activity occurs between November and March and immature individuals occur throughout the year. Mean length at first maturity ( L 50 ) was estimated as 11.1 cm TL. The information provided here contributes to the overall knowledge of this species and may be helpful for further development of management practices that ensure the sustainability of marine species exploitation.

Background. Although the information on fish ecology and population dynamic are fundamental for fisheries assessment and the development of sustainable management practices, there is still a gap for bycatch species, mainly in tropical coastal areas. The aim of the presently reported study was to describe the feeding habitats, mean length of maturation, and the population structure of Conodon nobilis (Linnaeus, 1758) caught as bycatch of the shrimp trawl fisheries in the south of Pernambuco, north-eastern Brazil. Materials and methods. Specimens of C. nobilis were collected monthly from August 2011 through July 2012, using an artisanal shrimp outrigger trawler from the local fleet. The population structure was analysed by sex, length, and seasons. Stomachs and gonads were removed and examined to define the length at first maturity (L50) and the feeding habits of C. nobilis in north-eastern Brazil. Results. A total of 272 specimens were caught. The sex ratio was similar among females and males in the area. The mean size at first maturity (L50) was estimated as 14.3 ± 0.65 cm. The diet of the species was mainly based on crustaceans (Penaeidae) and fish, however, it was not observed differences in the diet between juvenile and adults, and climate seasons. Conclusion. Conodon nobilis was classified as a zoobenthivore species, and showed a higher proportion of individuals caught above the L50. The information here provided, combined with other studies in the region, may contribute to the development of improved management strategies to species conservation and exploited marine habitats in northeast Brazil, which is still mostly unknown.

This study reports the occurrence of the oceanic basslet (Howellidae) in Brazilian waters. Bathysphyraenops simplex Parr, 1933, a rare species with a worldwide distribution, is recorded for the first time in Brazilian waters, based on three specimens collected off Rocas Atoll and Rio Grande do Norte. Howella atlantica Post & Quéro, 1991, known from the western and eastern Atlantic Ocean (64°N to 21°S), including waters around the Trindade Island, is reported off Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Rocas Atoll, and the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago. In addition, specimens previously reported in the literature as Howella brodie Ogilby, 1899 are reidentified as H. atlantica, extending the known distribution of this species to northeastern and southeastern Brazil. Measurements and counts for all specimens examined are provided.

The deep-sea anglerfishes of the suborder Ceratioidei (Lophiiformes) are represented by about 170 valid species with some of the most extraordinary morphological and reproductive adaptations among vertebrates, including extreme sexual dimorphism and male parasitism. Here we report on the diversity and distribution of rare ceratioids collected during the ABRACOS (Acoustics along the BRAzilian COaSt) expeditions off northeastern Brazil and the Fernando de Noronha Ridge (Rocas Atoll, Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, and associated seamounts). Chaenophryne ramifera, Oneirodes anisacanthus, O. carlsbergi, Gigantactis watermani, and unidentified specimens of Caulophryne, Dolopichthys, and Rhynchactis are recorded for the first time in the Brazilian Exclusive Economic Zone. Ceratias uranoscopus, Melanocetus johnsonii, and Chaenophryne draco have their distributions extended in Brazilian waters. Caulophryne, O. anisacanthus, and G. watermani are also recorded for the first time in the western South Atlantic. The specimen of G. watermani reported here represents the third known specimen of the species, and variations of its escal anatomy in relation to the holotype are described. Caulophryne, O. anisacanthus e G. watermani também são registrados pela primeira vez no Atlântico Sul ocidental. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-01-01 The objective of this study was to analyse the feeding habits and trophic interactions between four oceanic predatory fish around the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago (FNA), Brazil, in the western equatorial Atlantic (3.86°S/32.42°W), internationally recognized as an environment of high economic and ecological value. For this purpose, biological samples of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri), barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) and dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) were collected for stomach content and stable isotope analysis. Values of the index of relative importance revealed varied diets, with a strong presence of teleost fishes (Diodontidae and Exocoetidae) for all species, with yellowfin tuna having a greater diversity of food items. Despite being generalists/opportunists, the feeding strategy of these predators showed a tendency towards a specialized diet in the use of the available resources around the FNA. They presented a narrow trophic niche width (Levin's index, Bi < 0.6) and low overlap between species, except between barracuda and wahoo (MacArthur and Levin's, R0 = 0.72). Isotopic compositions had broad values of δ13C and δ15N, and were significantly different between species. Our results provide information about the four species' trophic organization and suggest that the predators avoid competition by preying on different prey, thus allowing their coexistence. WOS:000692956700010; Despite the increasing number of studies on the systematics of the Stephanoberycoidei (bigscales, pricklefishes, gibberfishes, hispidoberycids, and whalefishes) globally, knowledge about the diversity and distribution of the group in the western South Atlantic still remains fragmentary. In this study, we present new anatomical (meristic and morphometric) and distributional data for 18 species of the Stephanoberycoidei based on the examination of 150 specimens recently collected during the ABRACOS (Acoustics along the BRAzilian COaSt) expeditions off northeastern Brazil, including the Rocas Atoll, Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, and the seamounts off Rio Grande do Norte State, and additional museum specimens. In the Melamphaidae, remarks on the taxonomy of Melamphaes polylepis and of the Poromitra crassiceps and P. megalops species groups are made based on specimens examined. In addition, Scopeloberyx opercularis, currently considered as a junior synonym of Scopeloberyx robustus, is recognized as a valid species. Among the species identified, nine have their distributions extended in the western South Atlantic based on confirmed records: Melamphaes polylepis, M. typhlops, Poromitra megalops, Poromitra sp., Scopeloberyx opercularis, Scopeloberyx opisthopterus, Scopelogadus mizolepis, Cetostoma regani, and Rondeletia loricata. Eight further species are reported for the first time in Brazilian waters: Cetomimus sp. 1, Cetomimus sp. 2, Ditropichthys storeri, Gyrinomimus bruuni, Melamphaes eulepis, M. leprus, M. longivelis, and Melamphaes sp. Additional remarks on the taxonomy and distribution of the Stephanoberycoidei in the western South Atlantic are also provided.

International audience; Species of the family Sternoptychidae (hatchetfishes) occur worldwide and play critical roles by sequestering carbon, recycling nutrients, and acting as a key trophic link between epipelagic primary consumers and higher trophic levels in marine ecosystems. Nevertheless, basic knowledge on their ecology is still lacking and their functional ecology remains understudied with respect to composition, organization, functions and environment interactions. Here we integrated comprehensive information collected in the western Tropical Atlantic on the diversity, abundance, distribution and trophic ecology of hatchetfishes, including physicochemical features of their habitats and extensive carbon and nitrogen stable isotope data on its main prey groups. On this basis we defined five functional groups of hatchetfishes with different diet preference, isotopic composition, and vertical abundance peaks and reveal a possible high resource partitioning. Additionally, these species might have a different feeding tie chronology. Hence, hatchetfishes segregate in different ecological groups responding differently to environmental constraints including oxygen concentration and presenting diverse functional roles. As deep-sea species that migrate to epipelagic waters, hatchetfishes may play a key role in the transfer of subsurface photoassimilated carbon to deeper waters, a pathway through which the effects of climate change at the surface are transferred to the deep ocean. Moreover, as consumers of gelatinous organisms, these species convert "gelatinous energy" into "fish energy" readily usable by higher trophic levels, including endangered and commercially important species. This is a crucial trophic relationship that has been historically underestimated due to methodology limitations (e.g., quickly digested gelatinous organisms were probably underestimated in previous studies, based solely on stomach contents). Considering in ecosystem models this trophic relationship, as well as the functional organization of hatchetfishes, is important to properly answer key ecological questions including resource use, carbon transportation, and influence of mesopelagic community in climate change process.

This study provides information about the feeding habits, population aspects and spatial distribution of the spot­ted goatfish, Pseudupeneus maculatus, along the coast of the tropical Brazilian continental shelf. Distribution patterns are described using length frequencies and catch rates. Stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N), along with stomach contents, were analysed to determine the diet of the spotted goatfish. Multivariate analysis and numerical indicators of the diet, such as numerical frequency, frequency of occurrence and weight percentage, were computed to evaluate the diet composition. The mean trophic position was defined using both stable isotope ratios and stomach content analysis. The length at first maturity for the species was determined as 13.7 cm. A slight pattern in size distribution was observed, with mean size increasing with depth along the shelf. The diet was mainly composed of crustaceans, teleosts and Polychaeta. No clear dietary difference was found between habitat types, water depth or latitude. Both trophic positions estimated by stable isotopes and stomach contents analysis ranged between levels 3 and 4. P. Maculatus was found to be feeding on many rare and infrequent prey items, classifying it as a generalist zoobenthivorous predator, probably due to its efficient search strategy.

This study uses Brazil's export data for fish byproducts as a proxy for understanding trends in maw (swim bladder) trade on the Amazon coast. National exports totaled 4657.9 metric tons (t) and USD 163,476,733 from 2012 to 2020, with 21 countries or territories listed as importers and China accounting for 97% of the total volume. Annual export volumes increased from 153.2 t in 2012 to 733.4 t in 2020. Amazon states represented 95.6% of the total export volumes, which increased from 127 t in 2012 to 637 t in 2020, an increase of 398%. Maws are the main fish byproduct exploited in this region. They are considerably more expensive than flesh per unit weight of all 10 species (Sciaenidae and Ariidae) traded, with mean ex-vessel prices varying from 2 to 115 times more than the flesh. The volume of fish that is required to be harvested to produce 1 kg maw (fish:maw ratio) varies between 20 and 70 kg. The maw trade includes threatened species, and most fisheries remain under open access. Given that maw demands are rising, with new species entering the market, regulation measures should be implemented to protect vulnerable fishery resources and sustain the livelihoods of local communities.

The reproductive cycle of Xiphopenaeus kroyeri north-eastern Brazil was described to contribute to the sustainable management of this stock in the region. Specimens were collected monthly from August 2011 to July 2012 using a local vessel of the artisanal fleet. A total of 1201 individuals were analyzed (673 females and 528 males) with a mean carapace length (CL) of 1.88 ± 0.16 cm and total length (TL) of 9.00 ± 1.22 cm. The lowest CL and TL of mature females were 1.33 and 6.5 cm, respectively, and all females above 2.44 cm (CL) and 11.5 cm (TL) were mature. Ovarian maturation was classified into four stages: I (immature), II (maturing), III (mature) and IV (spawned). Individuals of all maturational stages were present throughout the year. Hauls were conducted during day and night at 47 stations by using a micronekton trawl (body mesh: 40 mm, cod-end mesh: 10 mm) from 10 to 1,113 m depth. The material was fixed in a 4% formalin solution for 1 month and then preserved in a 70% alcohol solution for proximally 6 months before processing for length (nearest 0.1 cm of standard length) and weight (nearest 0.01 g of total weight). A new maximum standard length forWinteria telescopais also provided.

We investigated the trophic niches and the resource partitioning of two snook species, the common (Centropomus undecimalis) and the fat snook (C. parallelus), in four tropical estuaries of the northeastern Brazil, using stable isotope analyses of carbon (delta C-13) and nitrogen (delta N-15). Fish specimens, mainly juveniles, basal resources and a primary consumer were collected in 2015 during dry and rainy seasons in all estuaries, which exhibited differences in system size, geomorphologic shapes, levels of sea access and anthropic pressures. Potential effect of factors like fish body length, estuary and seasonality on isotope ratios were investigated. Positive relationships between the size of fish and delta N-15 values were found, regardless the species. Our results indicated that snooks can be characterized as secondary consumers and have close trophic niches in most estuaries. Trophic overlaps were more pronounced within the largest estuaries (Catuama and Santa Cruz), whereas smaller systems that have restricted connections to the sea presented low isotopic niche overlap between both species (Suape and Sirinhaem). Moreover, a higher variability of delta C-13 and delta N-15 values in snooks was found in larger estuaries undergoing stronger influences from coastal adjacent waters. Although we were not able to detect clear seasonal effects, greater isotopic overlaps were found during the rainy season. Despite the lack of intrinsic differences in life history traits, both species, dominated by juveniles, shared similar trophic niches in these environments.

Estuarine environments gather pollution from large regions including urban and industrial zones. The monitoring of environmental quality in these areas constitutes a real requirement for global sustainable development. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterize the physicochemical and kinetic parameters of brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the species Centropomus undecimalis, Diapterus auratus and Diapterus rhombeus and to assess the effects (in vitro) of pesticides and metal ions on their respective activities in order to investigate them as potential biomarkers. Physicochemical properties such as thermostability, optimal pH and temperature, as well as kinetic parameters were investigated. AChE was pointed as the predominant cholinesterase (ChE) in the brains of the species under study. The highest optimum pH value was observed for C. undecimalis (8.0), and the lowest for D. rhombeus and D. auratus, with 7.2 and 7.0, respectively. The optimal temperature was 35 °C for the three species. The AChEs of the three species presented moderate thermostability, since they retained 61%, 72% and 67% of the activity up to 45 °C (C. undecimalis, D. auratus and D. rhombeus, respectively). The carbamate carbofuran showed to be the strongest inhibitor even at very low concentrations (IC50: 0.182, 0.174 and 0.203 μmol/L - C. undecimalis, D. auratus and D. rhombeus, respectively), followed by dichlorvos and carbaryl. According to the findings, the AChE of these species may be proposed as in vitro biomarker of exposure to carbofuran and dichlorvos (all three species) and carbaryl (D. auratus and D. Rhombeus), as well as for exceeding limit concentrations of Hg2+ (D. rhombeus) and As3+ (D. auratus) in biomonitoring programs located or not at estuarine environments.

International audience; Knowledge of the spatial distribution of fish assemblages biodiversity and structure is essential for prioritizing areas of conservation. Here we describe the biodiversity and community structure of demersal fish assemblages and their habitat along the northeast Brazilian coast by combining bottom trawl data and underwater footage. Species composition was estimated by number and weight, while patterns of dominance were obtained based on frequency of occurrence and relative abundance. A total of 7235 individuals (830 kg), distributed in 24 orders, 49 families and 120 species were collected. Community structure was investigated through clustering analysis and by a non-metric multidimensional scaling technique. Finally, diversity was assessed based on six indices. Four major assemblages were identified, mainly associated with habitat type and depth range. The higher values of richness were found in sand substrate with rocks, coralline formations and sponges (SWCR) habitats, while higher values of diversity were found in habitats located on shallow waters (10-30 m). Further, assemblages associated with sponge-reef formations presented the highest values of richness and diversity. In management strategies of conservation, we thus recommend giving special attention on SWCR habitats, mainly those located on depths between 30 and 60 m. This can be achieved by an offshore expansion of existing MPAs and/or by the creation of new MPAs encompassing those environments.

Roughneck Grunt (Haemulopsis corvinaeformis Steindachner, 1868) is the second most important species caught as bycatch of the shrimp fishery in Pernambuco, Northeastern Brazil. However, the population dynamic of this species is poorly known in the region. The aim of this study was to describe aspects of the population structure and reproductive biology of the H. corvinaeformis, providing important information for the development of sustainable management practices. Specimens were collected monthly from August 2011 to July 2012 and quarterly from October 2012 to June 2014. A total of 1,140 individuals was collected; 340 males (29.8%), 391 females (34.3%), and 409 were immature and could not be sexed (35.9%). Total length ranged from 7 to 25 cm. In general, total length of females [12.85 ± 2.49 cm (mean± SD)] and males [12.72 ± 2.46 cm (mean ± SD)] were similar (p > 0.05). The proportion of males and females was similar along the year, except in March. The relationship between total length and total weight was statistically significant (p< 0.05), showing an isometric growth. The (GSI) coupled with the distribution of maturational stages suggests that females reproduce all year around, with a peak during October-November. The length at first maturity (L50) was estimated at 11.88 cm for females and 11 cm for males. O objetivo do estudo foi descrever aspectos da estrutura populacional e biologia reprodutiva da espécie, fornecendo informações importantes para o desenvolvimento de práticas de manejo sustentáveis. Espécimes foram coletados mensalmente de agosto de 2011 a julho de 2012, e a cada três meses de outubro de 2012 a junho de 2014. Um total de 1.140 espécimes foi coletado; 340 machos (29,8%), 391 fêmeas (34,3%), e 409 imaturos cujo sexo não pode ser identificado (35,9%). O comprimento total variou entre 7 e 25 cm. De maneira geral, o comprimento total das fêmeas [12,85 ± 2,49 cm (média ± DP)] e machos [12,72 ± 2,46 cm (média ± DP)] foram similares (p > 0.05). A proporção de machos e fêmeas foi similar, com exceção de março. As relações entre comprimento total e peso total foram estatisticamente significantes (p< 0.05), mostrando um crescimento isométrico. O índice gonadossomático (GSI) associado com a distribuição dos estágios maturacionais sugerem que as fêmeas reproduzem durante todo o ano, com um pico durante outubro-novembro. International audience; We developed an Ecopath model for the Estuary of Sirinhaem River (SIR), a small-sized system surrounded by mangroves, subject to high impact, mainly by the sugar cane and other farming industries in order to describe the food web structure and trophic interactions. In addition, we compared our findings with those of 20 available Ecopath estuarine models for tropical, subtropical and temperate regions, aiming to synthesize the knowledge on trophic dynamics and provide a comprehensive analysis of the structures and functioning of estuaries. Our model consisted of 25 compartments and its indicators were within the expected range for estuarine areas around the world. The average trophic transfer efficiency for the entire system was 11.8%, similar to the theoretical value of 10%. The Keystone Index and MTI (Mixed Trophic Impact) analysis indicated that the snook (Centropomus undecimalis and Centropomus parallelus) and jack (Caranx latus and Caranx hippos) are considered as key resources in the system, revealing their high impact in the food web. Both groups have a high ecological and commercial relevance, despite the unregulated fisheries. As result of the comparison of ecosystem model indicators in estuaries, differences in the ecosystem structure from the low latitude zones (tropical estuaries) to the high latitude zones (temperate system) were noticed. The structure of temperate and sub-tropical estuaries is based on high flows of detritus and export, while tropical systems have high biomass, respiration and consumption rates. Higher values of System Omnivory Index (SOI) and Overhead (SO) were observed in the tropical and subtropical estuaries, denoting a more complex food chain. Globally, none of the estuarine models were classified as fully mature ecosystems, although the tropical ecosystems were considered more mature than the subtropical and temperate ecosystems. This study is an important contribution to the trophic modeling of estuaries, which may also help the knowledge of the role of key ecosystem processes in SIR.

This study reports on the first record of the intermediate scabbardfish Aphanopus intermedius in the western South Atlantic Ocean, based on a single specimen 725 mm standard length collected between 0 and 610 m depth around Rocas Atoll off north-eastern Brazil. Measurements and counts are provided and compared with those available in the literature.

Large pelagic sharks are distributed throughout all of the oceans and are caught as bycatch in pelagic longline fisheries worldwide. In the southern Atlantic Ocean, more than a dozen shark species are caught by the Brazilian tuna longline fleet. This study compiles information of the main shark species caught by the Brazilian tuna longline fishery in the southwestern and equatorial Atlantic Ocean. Catch and effort data of 14,860 longline sets from the Brazilian chartered tuna longline fleet, between 2004 and 2010, were analyzed. The blue shark Prionace glauca was the main shark species captured by this fishery. Shark catches showed contrasting trends during the study period: the silky (Carcharhinus falciformis) and the oceanic whitetip (C. longimanus) sharks catch increased up to 2008 and then declined, while mako sharks (Isurus spp.) showed an opposite trend. Effort for the Brazilian longline fishery had a higher concentration from 10°N to 30°S and from 20°W to 40°W. High values of catch per unit effort of southwestern and equatorial Atlantic Ocean sharks were heterogeneously distributed and, although elasmobranchs were caught over most of the longline fishing range, only blue sharks were caught in all areas. In the southern Atlantic Ocean, high fishing effort zones overlap significantly with some nursery areas, especially for the oceanic whitetip shark, indicating that these areas are at a direct risk from the industrial longline fishery.

This paper aims to describe the population dynamics and to evaluate the stock of the seabob-shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri on the coast of Pernambuco. Sampling was carried out between August/2011 and July/2012 in Sirinhaém, southern coast of Pernambuco. A total of 1201 individuals were analyzed, 673 females and 528 males. Total length (Lt) of females varied from 4.5 to 13.5 cm while the Lt of males ranged between 4.0 and 11.0 cm. The relationship between the Lt and carapace length and Lt and total weight showed negative allometry (males, females and pooled sexes). The slope of the curve "b" was statistically different between males and females for both relationships. Females mature with 8.90 cm. Asymptotic length L∞ was lower for males than for females (12.26 to 14.79 and 10.72 to 11.5 cm, respectively), K was similar between sexes (1.00-2.04 and 1.00-2.63 cm/year-1 respectively) as well as the longevity and size at 1st capture (1.50 to 1.97) years and 7.9 to 8.9 cm for males and females, respectively). The results indicate that X. kroyeri in the region is not overexploited for males, however considering females and pooled sexes the stock is near to being fully exploited. Este trabalho tem por objetivo descrever a dinâmica populacional e avaliar o estoque do camarão sete-barbas Xiphopenaeus kroyeri do litoral de Pernambuco. As coletas foram realizadas entre os meses de agosto/2011 a julho/2012 em Sirinhaém, litoral sul de Pernambuco. Foram analisados 1201 exemplares, sendo 673 fêmeas e 528 machos. Comprimento total (CT) das fêmeas variou de 4,5 a 13,5 cm enquanto o CT dos machos variou entre 4,0 e 11,0 cm. As relações entre o CT e comprimento da carapaça e o CT e peso total apresentaram alometria negativa (machos, fêmeas e sexos agrupados). O declive da curva "b" foi estatisticamente diferente entre machos e fêmeas para ambas relações. Fêmeas maturam com 8,90cm. O comprimento assintótico L∞ foi menor para os machos do que para as fêmeas (10,72-11,5 e 12,26-14,79 cm respectivamente), o K foi similar entre sexos (1,00-2,04 e 1,00-2,63cm/ano-1 respectivamente) assim como a longevidade e tamanho de 1ª captura (1,50-1,97anos e 7,9 - 8,9 cm para machos e fêmeas, respectivamente). Os resultados indicam que o estoque de X. kroyeri na região não se encontra sobreexplorada para os machos, entretanto considerando as fêmeas e sexos agrupados o recurso se encontra próximo do limite máximo de exploração.

This study aimed to analyse the composition and seasonal variation in the fish bycatch of the Brachyplatystoma vaillantii trawl fishery in the Amazon Estuary in 2009 by monitoring the trips of 48 vessels. The bycatch represented 29% of the catches, totalling 22,228 specimens and 52 taxa, distributed in 22 families (the principal families were Ariidae, Pimelodidae, and Sciaenidae). Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii, Plagioscion squamosissimus, and Sciades herzbergii together contributed 69% of the bycatch and were considered consistent bycatch species. Although a higher proportion of bycatch was captured during the rainy season, the seasonal difference was not significant. A multidimensional scaling (MDS) ordination analysis and an analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) indicated that the species composition of the bycatch was similar across the seasons. However, larger numbers of B. rousseauxii and P. squamosissimus were captured during the rainy season, whereas S. herzbergii predominated during the dry season. The marine migrants and estuarine species guilds showed the greatest richness, whereas freshwater migrants were the most numerous. Among the feeding guilds, the zoobenthivores were the most diverse, whereas the piscivores were the most abundant. The results indicate that fishing pressure primarily affects small- (20-30 cm) and medium-sized (30-50 cm) individuals, although the catch of P. squamosissimus was composed primarily of adults. However, the catches of both B. rousseauxii and B. vaillantii were composed primarily of juveniles. Este estudo objetivou analisar a composição e variação sazonal da ictiofauna acompanhante da pesca de arrasto de Brachyplatystoma vaillantii no estuário amazônico, em 2009, através do monitoramento de viagens de 48 embarcações. A ictiofauna acompanhante representou 29% das capturas, totalizando 22.228 indivíduos e 52 táxons pertencentes a 22 famílias, sendo estas as principais: Ariidae, Pimelodidae e Sciaenidae. Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii, Plagioscion squamosissimus e Sciades herzbergii representaram juntas 69% da captura e foram consideradas constantes. Embora o maior percentual de captura tenha ocorrido no período chuvoso, as diferenças sazonais não foram significativas. Análises de ordenação (MDS) e de similaridade (ANOSIM) mostraram que a composição da captura entre os períodos é semelhante; entretanto, maiores capturas de B. rousseauxii e P. squamosissimus foram observadas no período chuvoso, enquanto S. herzbergii foi dominante no período seco. As guildas migrantes marinhas e espécies estuarinas apresentaram maior riqueza, enquanto as migrantes dulcícolas predominaram em percentual de indivíduos. Considerando as guildas alimentares, as zoobentívoras apresentaram a maior riqueza, enquanto as piscívoras predominaram em abundância relativa. Os resultados indicam que a pressão pesqueira atua sensivelmente sobre os indivíduos de pequeno (20-30 cm) e médio (30-50 cm) porte, embora a captura de P. squamosissimus seja composta predominantemente por adultos. A captura de B. rousseauxii e B. vaillantii, entretanto, foi composta predominantemente por juvenis.

Catch and effort data from 14,835 longline sets conducted by foreign tuna longline vessels chartered by Brazil, from 2004 to 2010, were analyzed aiming at assessing the size, distribution and the relative abundance of the oceanic whitetip shark (Carcharhinus longimanus) in the southwestern and equatorial Atlantic Ocean. The nominal catch per unit of effort (CPUE) exhibited a gradual increase, from 0.04 sharks/1000 hooks, in 2004, the first year of the time series, up to 0.13, in 2007. In 2008, however, the CPUE increased sharply, reaching 0.43, dropping, then, back to 0.15, in 2010. A CPUE standardization was performed using a delta-GLM approach, but the standardized index of abundance did not differ significantly from the nominal CPUE. The models indicated that the catches of oceanic whitetip sharks are higher for the Spanish fishing strategy, which is characterized by the deployment of hooks at shallower depths. These results indicate that the use of deep longline hooks (>100 m) may help to mitigate the bycatch of this species.

This study provides information on the population structure, reproductive biology, growth, and mortality of Lepidophthalmus siriboia Felder and Rodrigues, 1993 on Algodoal Island in northern Brazil. Each month between June 2007 and May 2008, approximately 100 specimens were collected from a sand-muddy beach. In the laboratory, the specimens were wet weighed, measured – carapace length (CL) and length of the major chela (ChL) – and sexed. The ovigerous females were classified according to the stage of embryonic development. A total of 1268 individuals were analyzed (753 males, 515 females). Females were significantly larger than males throughout most of the year. Males reached sexual maturity at 6 mm and females at 7 mm. The observed overall sex ratio (1.5 male:1 female) was significantly different to the expected sex ratio of 1:1 ( χ 2 = 44 . 3 ; df = 1; p < 0 . 01 ; n = 1268 ). There was a significant female bias (0.7:1) in the specimens with a carapace length of over 10 mm ( χ 2 = 7 . 9 ; df = 1; p < 0 . 01 ; n = 313 ). Ovigerous females occurred throughout the study period, peaking in July, January, and April. The smallest ovigerous female had a carapace length of 7.5 mm. Fecundity was positively and significantly related to carapace length and body weight. Females had a higher maximum asymptotic carapace length and longevity (females: L ∞ = 15 . 3 mm carapace length, longevity = 1.4 years; males: L ∞ = 14 . 9 mm carapace length, longevity = 1.3 years). Males grow faster ( K = 0 . 009 ) than females ( K = 0 . 007 ) before reaching sexual maturity, but as adults, growth rates are similar in both sexes. Estimates of mortality rates varied among methods, but were invariably higher for males.

The exploitation rate for maximum sustainable yield (E MSY ) for males was lower than that for females. For both sexes, E MSY was below the exploitation rates (E). The present study demonstrates the need for management of the prawn fishery on the islands in the Amazon estuary, such as establishing a minimum commercial size. Este estudo tem o objetivo de estimar os parâmetros reprodutivos (tamanho de primeira maturidade, periodo reprodutivo e fecundidade), mortalidade e rendimento maximo sustentavel do Macrobrachium amazonicum da Ilha do Combu (Estuario Amazonico). Summary The performance of 20 fishery production systems off the state of Para in the northern region of Brazil was compared using the ‘RAPFISH’ methodology, with 57 identified attributes distributed among five evaluation fields: economics, sociology, ecology, technology and politics. The results indicated the existence of three large groups of fishery sectors: (i) industrial (red snapper with traps, the Laulao catfish, shrimp trawl) and semi-industrial (lobster) fisheries; (ii) large-scale artisanal fisheries (acoupa weakfish, red snapper with lines, king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, coco sea catfish); and (iii) small-scale artisanal fisheries (shellfish, crab, estuarine longline, fish traps, etc.). While the industrial and large-scale artisanal systems demonstrated greater sustainability from an economic and social standpoint, small-scale fisheries appeared to be more ecologically sustainable. Based on the results, a reduction in industrial fishing efforts is recommended, along with the establishment of licensing quotas for fishing vessels, as well as an increased investment in research on proper guidance and management of the semi-industrial and large-scale artisanal fisheries sectors. For small-scale artisanal fisheries, economic incentives are suggested for the aggregate value of the products and to assist fishers in the development of an appropriate social organization. Finally, it is believed that a greater stakeholder involvement in the decision-making process would improve management actions for all modalities.

The identification and mitigation of adverse effects of the bycatch of tuna longline fishery have been mainly developed and implemented for seabirds, sharks and turtles and, the knowledge on teleost bycatch for this fishery, remains very poor. This paper contributes to a comprehensive assessment of life history traits and fishery attributes of target and bycatch species caught by the tuna longline fishery in the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Data was compiled on seven life history traits and three fishery attributes for 33 and 27 teleost stocks caught by longliners in South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, respectively. In addition, each species was assigned into four categories describing the fate of the catch: target species for commercial use, bycatch species kept for consumption, bycatch species kept for commercial use and discarded bycatch. Life history traits and fishery attributes did not differ between oceans. However, non-target but commercialized species were smaller in the Atlantic Ocean. Teleosts caught by the tuna longline fishery was segregated into three main groups: (1) the fast growing species represented mainly by dolphinfishes (Coryphaena hippurus and C. equisellis), skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis), kawakawa (Euthynnus affinis), bullet tuna (Auxis rochei), snoek (Thyrsites atun) and blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus); (2) target tunas and most other bycatch species which were part of an intermediate group and (3) billfishes including swordfish representing the large and slow growing species with moderate to high market values and unknown or highly uncertain stock status. Investment in some key life history traits (such as growth coefficient) and the development of quantitative or semi-quantitative approaches (stock assessment and Ecological Risk Assessment) should be priorized as precautionary management measures for these species.

The environment quality of an industrial district on the river Pará, Amazon estuary, Brazil, based on the assessment of histological alterations and on the determination of catalase activity of the hepatic tissue of two fish species, Plagioscion squamossissimus and Lithodoras dorsalis, is provided. Histopathological changes were evaluated semi-quantitatively and qualitatively. Mean Assessment Values (MAV) and Histological Alteration Index (HAI) of organ lesions were calculated for each zone under analysis, with different impact levels: Zone 1 (industrial district, with high contamination risk); Zone 2 (medium risk) and Zone 3 (minimum risk). Strong positive catalase activity and histopathological changes were reported in Zone 1. None of the specimens of either species captured in Zones 1 and 2 was healthy, whereas more than 60% of the specimens from Zone 3 presented healthy hepatic tissue. The principal alterations observed in the tissue of the two species included an increase in the number of Melanomacrophagous centers, fatty degeneration, inflammation, congestion, hepatitis and focal necrosis. The carnivorous P. squamosissimus presented higher levels of alteration than the herbivorous L. dorsalis. Results showed that local anthropogenic impacts were affecting the health of the two fish species under analysis.

The first standardized, global assessment of these fishes, using Red List criteria, reveals threatened species needing protection.

WOS:000724705600001; International audience; Lanternfishes (Myctophidae) are among the most abundant, widespread, and diverse fish groups in the world ocean. They account for a significant part of oceanic fish biomass and play crucial roles in various ecosystem processes, including carbon sequestration and nutrient recycling. However, despite the increasing risks they face (e.g. global warming, plastic pollution, and exploitation of deep-sea resources), many aspects of the lanternfishes ecology still remain poorly known. Here, we investigate the species composition, vertical migration, and trophic ecology of lanternfishes in the Southwestern Tropical Atlantic (SWTA) and the influence of physicochemical factors on their horizontal structuring. We show that lanternfishes are a highly diverse and an abundant fish family of the SWTA, comprising at least 33 species and contributing 40% of all fish collected (in number). We reveal that some of these species may differ in their patterns of prey composition and migratory behaviour, leading to multidimensional niches, underestimated trophic links (e.g. gelatinous organisms), and several mechanisms to avoid competitive exclusion. At least 73% of the lanternfish species reported here seem to migrate to the surface to feed at night. Additionally, they are a central food source for mesopelagic and bathypelagic predators, thereby connecting shallow and deep-sea ecosystems. Finally, we show that the structure of lanternfish assemblages is not strongly affected by environmental conditions analysed here (i.e., throughout the thermohaline structure and current systems), leading to weak horizontal assemblage separation.

Most of them complete their whole life cycle at sea but some use estuaries at the juvenile stage before moving back to coastal waters and joining the adult exploited stocks. Little is known about jacks & rsquo; trophic ecology in estuaries, although their juveniles & rsquo; ability to successfully exploit available resources in these productive environments may strongly affect stock recruitment success in the species concerned. In this study, stomach content and stable isotope analyses were combined to investigate diet and food niche overlap of juveniles from two sympatric species of jacks (Caranx latus and C. hippos) in three contrasted estuaries (Suape, Sirinhae & acute;m and Santa Cruz) spread along the northeastern Brazilian coast. Overall, although the juveniles of C. latus exhibited a more piscivorous diet than those of C. hippos, the two species had very similar isotopic niches, with mean delta 13C and delta 15N values of -19.35 +/- 2.10%o and 11.03 +/- 1.11%o and of -19.10 +/- 1.82%o and 10.21 +/- 1.21%o, for C. hippos and C. latus respectively. In all the estuaries sampled, both species mostly ate fish (Ni = 20.1 & ndash;46.2%, Wi = 60.1 & ndash;75.1%, essentially Gobiidae and Clupeidae) and crustaceans (Ni = 26.0 & ndash;65.9%, Wi = 23.3 & ndash;38.2%, mainly Penaeidae shrimps). As a result, the overlap between their global estuarine isotopic niches was \textgreater68%. However, diet composition for the two species varied among estuaries, indicating that their juveniles partly adapt their food preferences to local prey availability. Notably, prey preferences differed significantly between the two species only in the Santa Cruz estuary, where delta 15N values were the highest for both species. Conversely, interspecific differences in delta 13C ratios were greater in the Suape and the Sirinhae & acute;m estuaries, likely reflecting a wider diversity in the carbon sources sustaining local food webs. Thus, combined differences in juvenile diet and food web structure at each location resulted in much-reduced local isotopic niche overlaps between the two species (from 27% in Suape to 57% in Santa Cruz). These results have important implications for resource and ecosystem management in northeastern Brazil and call for systematic cross-site comparisons when evaluating fish ecology and resource partitioning within estuarine systems.
