La Trobe University Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering Murray Darling Freshwater Research CentreMDFRC item.The diurnal distribution and diet of Hypseleotris spp. was examined over a 14-month period in Maroon Dam, a productive subtropical reservoir in south-east Queensland, Australia. Three distinct size classes of Hypseleotris were observed. The smallest (20 mm SL) of adult Hypseleotris remains in the near-shore littoral throughout seasonal and diurnal cycles and has a more eclectic diet than the other two size classes (zooplankton 28.8%, macro-invertebrate 28.9%, other 42.3%). Spatial and temporal differences in the distribution and diet of these three size class groups are discussed with reference to the abundance and availability of suitable prey, intraspecific competitive exclusion, predator avoidance and water quality.

Larvae of the Smallscaled Spinycheek Sleeper (Eleotris perniger) in transition from saltwater to freshwater were identified using COI and 16S gene sequences and the morphology and color pattern were then described. Available freshwater habitat for this species on Montserrat is minimal and continued existence is threatened by potential water withdrawals.

A study of the fish status of Kwa falls water body was carried out for three months (August-October) and a total of 562 fish representing 12 species belonging to 11 genera from 10 families and 6 orders were sampled. The family Clariidae was represented by Clarias gariepinus, Cichlidae by 2 species: Oreochromis niloticus and Tilapia zillii, Mockokidae by Synodontis omias and Schilbeidae by Schilbe uranoscopus. Claroteidae by 2 species: Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus and Chrysichthys longipinnis, Mugilidae by Mugil falcipinnis. The rest includes Paralichthyidae (Citharichthys stamflii), Characinidae (Sarcodaces odoe), Eleotridae (Eleotris vittata) and the Cyprinidae (Barilius niloticus). Siluriformes and Perciformes were the most abundant orders accounting for 72.2% and 14.8% of the total landings respectively while the species Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus (313), C. longipinnis (72) and Oreochromis niloticus (56) dominated the overall catch constituting 87.5%. Monthly differentiation in the diversity indices revealed higher values for the month of October than the month of August and September. The Shannon-wiener index (H’) obtained were within the range of 0.75 to 1.74 and showed significant difference between reaches, with downstream reaches having higher diversity throughout the sampling period. Adaptive radiations are generally thought to occur soon after a lineage invades a region offering high levels of ecological opportunity. However, few adaptive radiations beyond a handful of exceptional examples are known, so a comprehensive understanding of their dynamics is still lacking. Here, we present a novel case of an island species flock of freshwater fishes with a radically different tempo of adaptive history than that found in many popular evolutionary model systems. Using a phylogenomic data set combined with simultaneous Bayesian estimation of divergence times and trait-based speciation and extinction models, we show that the New Zealand Gobiomorphus gudgeons comprise a monophyletic assemblage, but surprisingly, the radiation did not fully occupy freshwater habitats and explosively speciate until more than 10 myr after the lineage invaded the islands. This shift in speciation rate was not accompanied by an acceleration in the rate of morphological evolution in the freshwater crown clade relative to the other species, but is correlated with a reduction in head pores and scales as well as an increase in egg size. Our results challenge the notion that clades always rapidly exploit ecological opportunities in the absence of competing lineages. Instead, we demonstrate that adaptive radiation can experience a slow start before undergoing accelerated diversification and that lineage and phenotypic diversification may be uncoupled in young radiations. Saccocoelioides is a genus of trematodes associated with fishes from the Americas. In the current research, morphologically distinct specimens of Saccocoelioides spp. were collected from six countries in Middle America. Specimens were sequenced using three molecular markers, the domains D1–D3 of the large subunit (LSU) from the nuclear rDNA, the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase subunit 1 (nad1) from mitochondrial DNA. A total of 74 new sequences were compared and aligned with other sequences available in GenBank. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses were inferred from the LSU and cox1 datasets, revealing unequivocally that all the specimens correspond to S. lamothei. A haplotype network was built with 119 sequences of the nad1 gene. The network detected 57 distinct haplotypes divided into three haplogroups. To explore morphological differences among samples of S. lamothei, 17 morphological features were measured from 53 specimens from three fish families: Eleotridae, Mugilidae and Gobiidae. Principal component analysis yielded three main polygons that corresponded with each family analysed, suggesting host-induced phenotypic plasticity. The current evidence suggests that S. lamothei infects at least five fish families along the Pacific coasts of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

The interaction between environmental factors and the distribution of gobiid fishes was investigated at 16 sampling sites in estuarine areas of the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. Fish specimens were mainly collected by using trawl net, push net, and bag net every two months, from August 2017 to August 2019. Data analysis showed that 40 fish species belong to three families in the gobiid assemblage in the studied area. The most common family was Gobiidae (62%), followed by Oxudercidae (25%) and Eleotridae (13%). The number of fish species decreased gradually from estuary to midstream of river systems. The gobiid assemblage was more diversified in the river system controlled by the West Sea (37 species and 696 individuals) than in the river planned by the East Sea (17 species and 225 individuals). The fish species and biodiversity indexes decreased with the reduction of salinity from the estuary to the midstream of the river system. In the wet season, the fish assemblage was more abundant and diverse than in the dry season due to the environmental factors influenced by the Mekong River. The highest biodiversity index was recorded in Bay Hap and Ong Trang (77.38%). Moreover, the analyzed result of biodiversity indexes revealed that the diversity of fish species in the study area was relatively high. The study outcome will be useful in fisheries management and biodiversity conservation, especially for estuaries.

Despite the fact that Okinawa Prefecture represents a very interesting subtropical region of Japan, its fauna of nematodes parasitizing fishes is still little-known. Therefore, new data are needed to recognize the species composition of these parasites in this zoogeographically remarkable region. Helminthological examinations of some freshwater and brackish-water fishes in Okinawa Prefecture carried out in the years 2010, 2016 and 2018, revealed two new and four insufficiently known species of spirurid nematodes (Spirurida), all gastrointestinal parasites. These were studied with the use of light and scanning electron microscopy. All nematode species recorded are described: Rhabdochonidae: Rhabdochona honshuensis Moravec et Nagasawa, 1989 from Glossogobius celebius (Valenciennes) (Gobiidae, Perciformes) (new host), Rhabdochona iriomotensis sp. nov. from Ophieleotris sp. (Eleotridae, Perciformes) and Rhabdochona sp. (only females) from Eleotris acanthopoma Bleeker and E. fusca (Forster) (both Eleotridae, Perciformes); Cystidicolidae: Spinitectus mirabilis sp. nov. from Kuhlia rupestris (Lacepede) (Kuhliidae, Perciformes) and Spinitectus sp. larvae from E. acanthopoma; and Camallanidae: Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) sp. (fourth-stage larva) from Yongeichthys criniger (Valenciennes) (Gobiidae, Perciformes). Rhabdochona iriomotensis sp. nov. is very similar to R. honshuensis, but differs from it in the presence of well-developed ventral precloacal ridges. Spinitectus mirabilis sp. nov. differs from its congeners and all other cystidicolids in having eggs provided with both lateral swellings and polar filaments. In addition to the discovery of two new nematode species, Rhabdochona iriomotensis sp. nov. and Spinitectus mirabilis sp. nov., the findings of all other species represent new host and geographical records. Rhabdochona denudata honshuensis Moravec et Nagasawa, 1989 is elevated to the level of an independent species R. honshuensis.

New Zealand has a complex recent history of climatic and tectonic change that has left variable signatures in the geographic distribution and genetic structure of the region’s flora and fauna. To identify concordant patterns, a broad range of taxa must be examined and compared. In New Zealand’s North Island, a consensus is forming as to the dominant biogeographic barriers in the region although obligate freshwater taxa have not been considered in this framework. We use single-nucleotide polymorphisms to investigate phylogeography in the widespread obligate freshwater fish Gobiomorphus basalis on the North Island. Phylogeographic patterns within G. basalis reveal biogeographic disjunctions that are in some ways consistent and in other ways at odds with established patterns, providing insight into the processes that have shaped the islands’ biogeography. We also use phylogeography to delineate species boundaries within the entire New Zealand radiation of Gobiomorphus and find that it contains several morphologically cryptic species. We resolve two clades within G. basalis that correspond to areas north and south of the Taupo Volcanic Zone. We confirm the distinctiveness of Gobiomorphus alpinus relative to Gobiomorphus cotidianus, as well as the presence of two lineages within Gobiomorphus breviceps that were previously identified based on mitochondrial data.

The species of Eleotris from Indonesia are reviewed and compared to the known species described from the area. Nine species are recognized including three new species in the ‘melanosoma’ neuromast pattern group. These are described using genetic and morpho-meristic approaches. The new species differ by a high percentage of genetic divergence in partial COI gene (652 bp) and by several characters including the number of pectoral fin rays, the number of scales in lateral, predorsal, forward and zigzag series. The main characteristics of the other known species in the area in the ‘melanosoma’ group, Eleotris melanosoma Bleeker, 1853 and Eleotris macrolepis (Bleeker, 1875), both belonging to this group, are given for comparison. A key for Eleotris species from Indonesia is provided.

The amphidromous sleeper Eleotris oxycephala (Perciformes: Eleotridae) is mainly distributed along the Kuroshio Current in East Asia, and this current is thought to be the main driver of the species' dispersal. Due to anthropogenic environmental changes in rivers, E. oxycephala is ranked as a threatened or near-threatened species in the red lists of 12 prefectures in Japan. Moreover, there is concern that the species' dispersal pattern could be changed due to fluctuations in the Kuroshio Current caused by global warming. In this study, 40 microsatellite markers were developed for E. oxycephala, and their suitability was tested on 43 individuals from two populations of E. oxycephala from Kanagawa and Miyazaki Prefectures. The number of alleles, expected heterozygosity and fixation index at each locus were 2-10 (mean = 5.350), 0.034-0.860 (mean = 0.650) and -0.261-0.448 (mean = 0.065), respectively. Furthermore, there was a lack of genetic difference between the two populations (FST = 0.008, F'ST = 0.024), indicating widespread gene flow via the Kuroshio Current. These markers will be useful to evaluate the genetic structure and infer population demographic history of E. oxycephala populations, which may assist in the conservation of this species.

The larvae and/or juveniles of coastal species were found in the composition of oceanic ichthyoplankton sampled during the 43rd expedition of R/V “Akademik Vavilov” in the southern waters of the North Atlantic. These fish included insufficiently-studied taxonomic forms from five families: Myripristis jacobus (Holocentridae), Ctenogobius sp., Gobionellus oceanicus, Gobioides grahamae (Gobiidae), Eleotris sp. 1., Dorminator maculatus (Eleotridae), Spariosoma sp. 1 (Scaridae), and Pontinus nematophthalmus, (Scorpaenidae). The paper presents illustrated descriptions of these forms and discusses the problems of their identification.

International audience; Eleotris species (Teleostei: Eleotridae) are one of the most common fish in Indo‐Pacific estuaries and insular freshwater streams. In these rivers, they are a sit‐andwaitpredator. They have an amphidromous life cycle, that is adults grow, feed andreproduce in rivers, while larvae have a marine dispersal phase. Larvae recruit backto rivers and settle in stream habitats. Primary characters used to determine Eleotrisspecies are the presence and the disposition of cephalic sensory papillae rows on theoperculum and under the eyes as well as scale row numbers. The morphology ofthese cephalic sensory papillae is of particular importance in this predatory genusas it is generally correlated in fish to predation and feeding. In this paper, we haveestablished a molecular phylogeny of the genus based on the 12 mitochondrial protein‐coding genes to discuss the relationship between Indo‐Pacific Eleotris species.There is a well‐supported dichotomy in the molecular phylogeny, and this separationinto two main clades is also morphologically visible, as it reveals a difference in thearrangement of cephalic sensory papillae. Indeed, the phylogeny distinguishes thespecies with the “open” pattern of the operculum sensory papillae and the specieswith the “closed” one. This phylogeny thus reflects the morphology of the opercularpapillae. The evolution of this character is discussed in terms of the adaptation of theEleotris genus to life in tropical insular river systems.

Gyrodactylus mojarrae n. sp. is described from the gills of the Neotropical cichlids Thorichthys maculipinnis, Rocio octofasciata, Vieja zonata and V. fenestrata from several localities across southern Mexico. The new species is erected on the basis of the morphology of the haptoral elements (anchors, bars and hooks), and its phylogenetic position within the Gyrodactylidae is evaluated based on the analysis of partial sequences of the ITS1, 5.8 rRNA gene and ITS2. Gyrodactylus mojarrae n. sp. differs from other congeneric species by having hooks with a straight shaft and recurved point, pointed toe and convex heel, presence of reduced superficial anchor roots, by the number and disposition of spinelets of the male copulatory organ, and the absence of shield and lateral processes of the superficial bar. Molecular circumscription of isolates of G. mojarrae n. sp. from different host and hydrological basins showed that these isolates are conspecific and represent a distinct lineage from other congeners, including newly sequenced isolates of Gyodactylus sp. A and Gyrodactylus sp. B from Astyanax mexicanus (Characidae) and Gobiomorus dormitor (Eleotridae), respectively. Genetic affinities of Gyodactylus sp. A and B indicate that they might represent undescribed species infecting freshwater fish from the Americas.

L-W and eight biometric relationships for D. maculatus in the Alvarado lagoon, were performed on 500 specimens (252 females and 248 males), 23.7 - 143.9 cm TL and 0.95 – 59.1 g weight, sampled during May 2015 to May 2017, using traditional fishing gears. The b coefficient indicated isometric growth (b = 3.0195; r2 >0.9763; P < 0.05) for overall sample, females (b = 3.0507; r2 >0.989; P < 0.05) and males (b = 2.9953; r2 >0.9783 P < 0.05). Biometric relationships showed high correlations (r2 >0.9193 – 0.9992; P < 0.05) for the overall sample. females (r2 >0.9188 – 0.9981; P < 0.05) and males (r2 >0.9079 – 0.9995; P < 0.05). This study report for the first time L-W and biometric relationships for the Fat sleeper. These results will be useful to delineate a baseline for regulations and the sustainable fishery management of this fish species

We report the first complete mitochondrial genomes of three species of eleotrid fishes from the Pacific and Atlantic watersheds of Panama: Eleotris amblyopsis, E. picta, and Hemieleotris latifasciata. The three species have similar mitochondrial genomes with identical gene order; however, there are differences in the length of control region, 16S rRNA, and in seven of the tRNAs. In addition, ATP8 is one codon shorter in E. picta than in E. amblyopsis or H. latifasciata. We infer a phylogeny for Gobiiformes based on all mitochondrial protein-coding genes, which supports the monophyly of Eleotridae but does not recover Neotropical members of Eleotris as a distinct clade.

The order Gobiiformes is made up of more than 2200 species, representing one of the most diverse groups among teleost fishes. The biological causes for the tachytelic karyotype evolution of the gobies have not yet been fully studied. Here we expanded cytogenetic data for the Eleotridae family, analyzing the neotropical species Dormitator maculatus, Eleotris pisonis, Erotelis smaragdus, and Guavina guavina. In addition, a meta-analytical approach was followed for elucidating the karyotype diversification versus biological aspects (habitat and egg type) of the Gobiiformes. The species E. smaragdus and E. pisonis present 2n = 46 acrocentric chromosomes (NF = 46), D. maculatus 2n = 46 (36sm + 4st + 6a; NF = 86), and G. guavina, the most divergent karyotype, with 2n = 52 acrocentric chromosomes (NF = 52). Besides numeric and structural diversification in the karyotypes, the mapping of rDNAs and microsatellites also showed noticeable numerical and positional variation, supporting the high chromosomal evolutionary dynamism of these species. In Gobiiformes, karyotype patterns which are more divergent from the basal karyotype (2n = 46a) are associated with characteristics less effective to dispersion, such as the benthic habit. These adaptive characteristics, connected with the organization of the repetitive DNA content in the chromosomes, likely play a synergistic role in the remarkable karyotype diversification of this group.

Gobiiform fishes are a highly diverse group with global distribution. In the Arabian Sea, this group is represented by four families—Butidae, Eleotridae, Gobiidae, and Oxudercidae—comprising 215 species in 77 genera. There are no endemic species within the Butidae. However, 58 species in 34 genera from the 3 remaining families are reported to be endemic. The highest endemicity is exhibited by the family Gobiidae (49 species in 26 genera), followed by Oxudercidae (6 species in 6 genera) and Eleotridae (3 species in 2 genera). The diversity in species, adaptations, ecology, and behavior makes gobiiform fishes excellent candidates as study organisms. Three foci for which research in the Arabian Sea have contributed significantly to the collective understanding of these fishes are summarized in this chapter—“The Ecology of Mudskippers,” “The Ecology of Shrimp-Associated Gobies,” and “The Ecology of Coral- and Sponge-Associated Gobies.” The results of these studies and future studies such as these are especially important in light of increased impacts from anthropogenic activities within the coastlines and water bodies of the Arabian Sea.

Cikaso and Cimandiri estuaries are well known as the central area of glass eel fisheries in Sukabumi Regency. Local fishermen catch glass eels using two main fishing gears, namely traps and lift nets. Although both fishing gears' target operation is glass eels, many other fish species are also caught as bycatch. The present study aimed to identify glass eels and bycatch ichthyofauna in glass eel fisheries of the Cikaso and Cimandiri estuaries, Sukabumi. The research was carried out monthly from November 2020 to January 2021. Glass eels fishing gears collected a total of 21 fish species belonging to 15 families in both estuaries. According to the percentage ano-dorsal length measurement to total length (AD/TL), 3 species of glass eel were identified, i.e. Anguilla bicolor bicolor, A. nebulosa, and A. marmorata. These three species were the most abundant fish catches in both estuaries. More than 18 bycatch ichthyofauna were recorded and most of them are economically important fish, such as Ambassidae, Eleotridae, Engraulidae, Gobiidae, and Polinemidae. To sustain fishery management, the recording bycatch from glass eel fishery in the Cikaso and Cimandiri estuaries is necessary to be done regularly because they contribute to fishing mortality.

Morphometric and genetic variations of species composers of nike fish assemblages in Gorontalo Bay Waters, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 4571-4581. Nike is Gobioidei fish at the post-larval and juvenile stages whose habitat is still in seawater before they migrate to the freshwater, grow up, and spawn to fulfill their life cycle as an amphidromous species. This study aims to identify the species composers of Nike fish in Gorontalo Bay waters based on their morphometric and molecular characters. 2,523 samples were collected from the catches of fishermen during three periods of their appearance in Gorontalo Bay waters from January to March 2019. The samples were grouped based on their similarity of melanophore patterns, and morphometric characters of 10 units were then measured. This study found 20 different groups of melanophore patterns; 15 of them were new melanophore patterns. DNA samples from each group of new melanophore patterns were then isolated for molecular analysis. The morphometric analysis grouped the 20 melanophore patterns into three separate clusters that were confirmed through molecular analysis. The results of Gen Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) sequences indicate that the new melanophore patterns of Nike fish assemblages consisting of six species; five species in the Gobiidae family (i.e. Sicyopterus parvei, S. cynocephalus, S. longifilis, S. lagocephalus, and Stiphodon semoni) and a species in the Eleotridae family (Belobranchus belobranchus).

The modern Gobioidei (Teleostei) comprise eight families, but the extinct †Pirskeniidae from the lower Oligocene of the Czech Republic indicate that further families may have existed in the past. However, the validity of the †Pirskeniidae has been questioned and its single genus †Pirskenius has been assigned to the extant family Eleotridae in previous works. The objective of this study is to clarify the status of the †Pirskeniidae. Whether or not the †Pirskeniidae should be synonymised with the Eleotridae is also interesting from a biogeographical point of view as Eleotridae is not present in Europe or the Mediterranean Sea today. We present new specimens and re-examine the material on which the two known species of †Pirskenius are based (†P. diatomaceus Obrhelova, 1961; †P. radoni Přikryl, 2014). To provide a context for phylogenetically informative characters related to the palatine and the branchiostegal rays, three early-branching gobioids (Rhyacichthys, Protogobius, Perccottus), an eleotrid (Eleotris) and a gobiid (Gobius) were subjected to micro-CT analysis. The new data justify revalidation of the family †Pirskeniidae, and a revised diagnosis is presented for both †Pirskenius and †Pirskeniidae. Moreover, we provide for the first time an attempt to relate a fossil gobioid to extant taxa based on phylogenetic analysis. The results indicate a sister-group relationship of †Pirskeniidae to the Thalasseleotrididae + Gobiidae + Oxudercidae clade. Considering the fossil record, the arrival of gobioids in freshwater habitats in the early Oligocene apparently had generated new lineages that finally were not successful and became extinct shortly after they had diverged. There is currently no evidence that the Eleotridae was present in the European ichthyofauna in the past.

Taxonomic identification of early larval stages of fishes using conventional morphological keys is extremely laborious due to the overlapping characters shared between genetically closer species. Especially, species-level differentiation during their ontological development is challenging due to the paucity of information on their diagnostic features. In the present study, we aimed to use universal DNA barcoding technology to identify Ichthyoplankton and juvenile fishes of a tropical river (Kuantan River in Pahang) in Malaysia. This sampling station was chosen in order to check the distribution of juvenile and fish Ichthyoplankton samples after the recent massive flood encountered in East peninsular Malaysia during 2014. We adopted mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase C subunit 1 gene sequencing to identify fish samples. A total of 28 species from 15 families and 5 orders were identified successfully to the species level from the total of 58 DNA barcodes. Unlike the previous report, the most dominant fishes in this study belong to the Cyprinidae family followed by toxotidae, ambasidae, and eleotridae. We admit that the modified bubu light trap method adopted for larval collection in this study has its limitation to attract larvae which had negative phototactic behavior (i.e., Ariidae fishes). Phylogenetic and BLAST analysis showed accuracy of species identification with high bootstrap and percentage similarity value, respectively. Results in this study confirmed the efficiency of universal DNA barcode technology in species-level delimitation of morphologically cryptic species identification. The data presented in this study are valuable for analyzing post-flood effect on fish distribution in Tropical River and implementing plans for future fishery resource management in Kuantan River, Pahang, Malaysia.

Knowledge of the parasite fauna of Australian freshwater fish is fragmentary and incomplete. An understanding of fish hosts and their associated parasites is vital for the successful management of aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we surveyed the parasite fauna of carp gudgeons (Hypseleotrisspp.), a complex of species of Australian freshwater fishes, using morphology and molecular data for the 18S and 28S ribosomal RNA genes. We examined 137 individuals of three different taxa in the carp gudgeon species complex and found 16 parasitic taxa of the Digenea, Cestoda, Nematoda and Arthropoda (five adults and 11 larvae). Eleven parasites are reported for the first time from the carp gudgeons (Pseudodactylogyrussp.,Gyrodactylussp.,Clinostomumsp.,Paradilepis patriciae,P.cf.kempi, two unidentified species ofParadilepis,Dendrouterinasp.,Parvitaeniasp., two lineages of Cyclophyllidea gen. sp.,Procamallanussp., larvae of a spirurine nematode andLernaeasp.), in addition toApatemoncf.hypseleotrisNegm-Eldin & Davies, 2001 and the invasive tapewormSchyzocotyle acheilognathi(Yamaguti, 1934), which were previously reported from these fish hosts. Parasite species richness was double in Lake's and Midgley's carp gudgeons relative to western carp gudgeon. These findings highlight the key role of carp gudgeons as intermediate hosts for multiple parasites with complex life cycles using native birds as definitive hosts and the usefulness of DNA data for the identification of parasite larvae.

The native fish Dormitator latifrons , also known as Chame, Popoyote, Puyeque and Pacific fat sleeper, grows in brackish environments in estuaries of the American Pacific coast, from Baja California, in Mexico, to Peru. It is consumed regionally and its characteristics under culture conditions are currently being evaluated. This study compared the proximate composition and fatty acid profile of wild and cultured specimens of D. latifrons in order to determine the effect of feeding them a commercial diet for tilapia under culture conditions. The protein content of the muscle of wild fish was higher than that of cultured fish, but the total lipid content was lower. The levels of fatty acids C18:1n9 and C18:2n6 were significantly higher (P The n3/n6 ratio was higher in wild fish. These results show that D. latifrons is a species that can be easily cultured and that easily gets used to formula feed. However, given the fatty acid composition of this species, it is necessary to control the quality of oil in the diet.

Geologically southern part of New Guinea Island is the oldest part of the mainland and have most speciose of freshwater fish. Asmat is one area in Southern New Guinea where has some large river systems such as Siret and Vriendschap Rivers. There is not much information on freshwater fish diversity of the area. This study aim to know freshwater fish species of both river systems, in order to manage the area as conservation area by local government. Active fish collection method was applied to sample fish of Siret and Vriendschap River Systems. One seine net, 3.6 m length, 1.23 m in height, and with a mesh size of less than 0.5 cm, and traditional scoop net were used to collect fish. The Siret and Vriendschap freshwater fish fauna consist of 22 species in 18 genera and 15 families. Cochlefelis danielsi (Ariidae), Mogurnda cingulata (Eleotridae), Zenarchopterus novaeguineae (Hemiram-phidae), Melanotaenia ogilbyi (Melanotaenidae), Synaptura villosa (Soleidae) are endemic to Southern New Guinea. Spesifically, Mogurnda cingulata (Banded Gudgeon) and Melanotaenia ogilbyi (Ogilbyi’s Rainbowfish) have restricted distribution in Southern New Guinea. Further research in smaller stream and its tributaries might increase freshwater fish diversity of Asmat. Key words : Southern New Guinea, Asmat, freshwater fish

International audience; Indo-Pacific insular freshwater systems are mainly dominated by amphidromous species. Eleotris fusca is a widespread one, its life cycle is characterised by a marine pelagic larval phase allowing the species to disperse in the ocean and then to recruit to remote island rivers. In the present study, the population structure of E. fusca over its Indo-Pacific distribution range (Western Indian Ocean to French Polynesia, Pacific Ocean) was evaluated. We analysed a section of mitochondrial COI of 557 individuals sampled from 28 islands to visualise the population structure. Haplotypes diversity (Hd) was between 0.458 and 1 and, nucleotide diversity (π) was between 0.001 and 0.02. Two distinct genetic groups appeared, one in the Indian Ocean and the other in the Pacific Ocean (FST mean = 0.901; 5.2% average divergence). Given these results, complete mitogenomes (mtDNA) were sequenced and combined with the nuclear Rhodopsin (Rh) gene for a subset of individuals. The two phylogenetic trees based on each analysis showed the same genetic pattern: two different groups belonging to the Indian and the Pacific oceans (6.6 and 1.6% of divergence for mtDNA and Rh gene respectively), which supported species level differentiation. These analyses revealed the presence of two sister species confounded until present under the name of Eleotris fusca. One of them is cryptic and endemic of the Indian Ocean and the other one is the true E. fusca, which keeps, nevertheless, its status of widespread species.

The Amur sleeper Perccottus glenii is used as a model for investigation of free amino acids' responses in various organs to changes of temperature during the annual cycle and under a prolonged cold shock. Phosphoethanol and phosphoserine are found during seasonal decrease of temperature and at the fourth day of cold shock in the brain. Up to the beginning of winter, the pool of phosphoethanoamine increases by 94 times. That of taurine, which is in negative reciprocal relationship with phosphoethanoamine, decreases at the seasonal drop of temperature and temperature shock. In December, fourfold increase of the taurine level was found in muscles (56% of the total pool of amino acids), while eightfold in plasma (43%). The cold shock does not stimulate accumulation of taurine in plasma, muscles, and brain and only slightly increases its content in the liver. In contrast to the constantly increasing taurine content in the plasma and muscles from April to December, the pools of proteinogenic amino acids fluctuate during the annual cycle, considerably increasing after hypobiosis and at the fourth day after the cold shock. The specific decrease of the large pool of histidine in the brain by 16.7 times is found at the fourth day of the shock, while it is by 4.8 times in muscle in winter. It is supposed that phosphoethanol (in the brain) and taurine (in other organs) may be protectors in adaptation of fish to low temperatures.

A new species of the eleotrid genus Microphilypus from the Upper Rio Negro basin is described herein. It differs from all congeners in the presence of 5–6 arched rows of melanophores on the abdominal region, posterior to the base of the pelvic fins, followed by six large irregularly oval black blotches, with the tips of the three posteriormost blotches visible in lateral view; a dark teardrop-shaped blotch on the caudal peduncle, extending to the base of the ventral caudal rays; five light brown blotches along the dorsal profile of the body, between the origin of the second dorsal fin and the caudal peduncle; and the poorly developed laterosensory system on the head, with horizontal rows of head papillae b and d absent. A key to the species of Microphilypnus is presented.

Summary Species with wide geographic distributions can consist of different lineages or even of different species. The present study evaluated the molecular diversity of the family Eleotridae by analyzing sequences of the COI gene from species collected in different locations in a Neotropical region as well as sequences from BOLD and GenBank. The analysis revealed the distinction and differentiation of a variety of species with high statistical support, including Gobiomorus dormitor (two lineages), Dormitator maculatus (three lineages) and Eleotris fusca (three lineages), and a number of different lineages of Microphilypnus. This indicates the existence of a number of unknown cryptic species that have not been reported previously, increasing the potential diversity of eleotrid species in the Neotropics.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of meat protein of Dormitator latifrons for humans based on its Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS). Wild and cultured specimens were evaluated for amino acid content using HPLC equipment. The calculation of PDCAAS was performed as follows: milligrams of essential amino acid in 1 g of test protein per milligram of the same amino acid in 1 g of reference protein per true digestibility. To evaluate the protein of D. latifrons in relation to that of other fish, PDCAAS was calculated from the proteins of eight fish usually used in human nutrition. D. latifrons has a good essential amino acid profile, providing the same nutritional quality as those of other fish. Although the meat of wild D. latifrons contributes only 73% of human lysine requirements, it can be complemented with other lysine sources.

We assessed the prevalence of life history variation across four of the five native amphidromous Hawai'ian gobioids to determine whether some or all exhibit evidence of partial migration. Analysis of otolith Sr.: Ca concentrations affirmed that all are amphidromous and revealed evidence of partial migration in three of the four species. We found that 25% of Lentipes concolor (n = 8), 40% of Eleotris sandwicensis (n = 20) and 29% of Stenogobius hawaiiensis (n = 24) did not exhibit a migratory life-history. In contrast, all individuals of Sicyopterus stimpsoni (n = 55) included in the study went to sea as larvae. Lentipes concolor exhibited the shortest mean larval duration (LD) at 87 days, successively followed by E. sandwicensis (mean LD = 102 days), S. hawaiiensis (mean LD = 114 days) and S. stimpsoni (mean LD = 120 days). These findings offer a fresh perspective on migratory life histories that can help improve efforts to conserve and protect all of these and other at-risk amphidromous species that are subject to escalating anthropogenic pressures in both freshwater and marine environments.

International audience; All native fishes living in the Caribbean island rivers are considered diadromous but few species have been validated as diadromous. In Guadeloupe (Lesser Antilles) as well as in the other tropical islands, the riverine habitats are subject to strong anthropogenic pressure due to resource modifications or dams. The management of fish biodiversity requires knowledge concerning their life history traits and behaviour that are still unknown for most species at a local scale and at the whole distribution area of the species. In a Guadeloupe river, we inferred the migratory patterns of four freshwater fishes common to Caribbean rivers by the analysis of otolith microchemistry. We found two species Eleotris perniger (Eleotridae) and Sicydium plumieri (Gobiidae) to be completely amphidromous with a marine larval phase and a freshwater adult phase. Agonostomus monticola (Mugilidae) was also found to be amphidromous in this system. The fourth species Gobiesox cephalus (Gobiesocidae) showed elemental ratios suggesting an estuarine larval phase and was defined as “limited amphidromous”. The identification of such life history traits, with limited dispersion abilities, argues for specific management measures in tropical island rivers at a basin scale for the conservation of biodiversity.

International audience; The study of the ichthyofaunal corpus yielded by the archaeological site of Teouma, Efate Island, Vanuatu, has revealed the unexpected presence of a significant number of bones of Eleotridae (Sleepers) on the site, as early as 2920-2870 cal. B.P. Out of the 8560 identified fish remains associated with the Lapita layers, which document the period of initial settlement of the archipelago, 1368 have been determined as belonging to eleotrids, including species of the genera Giuris, Ophiocara and Eleotris. They represent 16% of the corpus and occupy second place among the dominant families in an assemblage composed otherwise of a wide-range of marine coastal and reef-associated taxa. Even though the Lapita economy is characterised by an intensive and broad-spectrum exploitation of all terrestrial and marine resources available and readily procurable, the eleotrids of Teouma are the first clear evidence thus far of the exploitation of freshwater environments by Lapita communities anywhere in their range. A river and a swamp are present in the vicinity of the site, and hooks and lines and/or multi-pronged spears could have been used. Passive gear such as weirs, fish-traps or nets might have been applied as well, enabling the capture of sleepers in larger quantities. The results presented here offer an original insight of an unknown facet of Lapita subsistence strategies and aim to highlight the antiquity of freshwater fishing at a regional scale.

A checklist of the marine and estuarine fishes of New Ireland Province is presented, with special emphasis on Kavieng District, combining both previous and new records. After the recent KAVIENG 2014 expedition, a total of 1325 species in 153 families were recorded from the region. The largest families are the Gobiidae, Pomacentridae, Labridae, Serranidae, Apogonidae, Lutjanidae, Chaetodontidae, Blenniidae, Carangidae, Acanthuridae, Scaridae, Holocentridae, Syn-gnathidae, Lethrinidae and Scorpaenidae. A total of 810 fish species (61.1 % of the total marine and estuarine fish fauna) are recorded from New Ireland for the first time.The fish fauna of New Ireland includes 142 species in transitional waters and 1264 species in marine habitats, and 54 species species in freshwater habitats. Zoogeographically, 1179 species have a wide distribution range, most frequently a broad Indo-West Pacific distribution. Among the remaining species, just 12 are endemic to New Ireland.

This study investigates the published literature and incorporates our field data from 1997 to September 2018 to generate an inventory report of primary freshwater fishes for Perak State in Malaysia. We critically examined and enumerated 186 species from 2 classes, 16 orders, 43 families and 114 genera in 57 localities. A total of 173 fish species (91.4%) are native to Perak and 17 species (8.6%) are non-native. The provisional checklist presented herein is conservative and excludes doubtful inventory records that lack synthesis and traceability. We encountered seven taxonomic discrepancies and we also could not confidently identify eight species. These are explicitly discussed to inform future workers.

Henneguya shaharini Shariff is reported for the first time and found to be the possible cause of high rates of mortality in pond-reared marble goby, Oxyeleotris marmoratus Bleeker and Oxyeleotris lineolata Steindachner and the hybrid species of O. marmoratus (♀) ˟ O. lineolata (♂) in multiple major production areas of south China which expands the geographical distribution and host range of this parasite. This episode of epizootic gill henneguyosis had a distinct seasonal pattern which generally occurred from late December to middle May when water temperature ranged from 13 to 22 °C, but no significantly geographical bias was found. No remarkable clinical symptoms were found in affected fish with the early onset of disease. The severely infected fish, however, swam lonely and listlessly at the water surface and the gill filaments of moribund fish had much smudge attached. Upon necropsy, large amounts of myxosporean plasmodia of variable size could be found in the gill filaments. Histopathological investigations showed that the plasmodia were generally intralamellar, but rarely interlamellar and no distinct inflammatory responses surrounding the intact plasmodia were observed. The high infection intensity causing the displacement of gill filament by plasmodia and respiratory failure was possibly the main cause of fish mortality. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that H. shaharini clustered with two gill-infecting congeners to form an independent Gobioidei-infecting branch in a freshwater Henneguya cluster within a marine Henneguya-Myxobolus clade. The possible source of H. shaharini in China is discussed.

International audience; A new species of Eleotris, a freshwater eleotrid, is described fromstreams of the Solomon Islands using both genetic analysis based on the mitochondrialCOI gene and morpho-meristic study. The new species is separatedfrom E. acanthopoma, E. melanosoma, and E. fusca with a mean pairwise divergenceof 14%, 11%, and 9.9%, respectively. It shares with E. fusca, its sister species, thesame combination of cephalic free neuromast patterns (i.e., second, fourth, andsixth suborbital free neuromast rows on cheek extending ventrally past horizontalrow d (2.4.6 pattern) and row os connecting with row oi at ventroposteriormargin of opercle, but it differs by a combination of characters includingscales in lateral series 42 – 46 versus 53 – 67, transverse back series 11 – 13 versus13 – 21, and zigzag series 9 – 11 versus 12 – 17.

Significant modifications to the free amino acid pool and various other compounds in the bodies of poikilotherms in response to decreased temperature reflect significant alterations in their mechanisms of adaptation. The literature lacks data on the contributions of such free compounds to the low-temperature adaptation of the brains of poikilotherms. Our previous studies showed that acute cold shock induced the appearance of large quantities of two ninhydrin-positive compounds of unknown nature in the brain of the eurythermal pond fish Amur sleeper. The experiments reported here show that the brain accumulates these compounds by the beginning of the winter period. They were found to be the phospholipid metabolites phosphoethanolamine and phosphoserine. The winter phosphoethanolamine pool was 94 times greater than the summer level, while phosphoserine was present only in summer. It is suggested that accumulation of phosphoethanolamine and phosphoserine is associated with adaptive modifications of membrane phospholipids at low temperatures.

This work reports the second record of the Indo-Pacific invasive mud sleeper, Butis koilomatodon, for coastal São Paulo in southeastern Brazil, and represents the southernmost record for this species in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. The risks of a potential invasion mediated by anthropogenic impacts on the area of occurrence are also discussed. Neste trabalho, reportamos o segundo registro do peixe invasor, Butis koilomatodon, na costa de São Paulo (Sudeste do Brasil), o que representa, também, o registro mais ao sul no sudoeste do Oceano Atlântico. Discutimos os riscos de uma potencial invasão mediada pelos impactos antrópicos na área de ocorrência.

WOS: 000378691500009 Species complexes are a common occurrence in freshwater fish assemblages and may often pose a challenge to the understanding of their ecology. A typical case is the 'cryptic' carp gudgeon group Hypseleotris spp. in southeastern Australia, which is thought to comprise four closely related species occurring sympatrically within the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB), where flow delivery scenarios have been proposed for the management and conservation of the native fish faunas. The objective of this study was to provide a deeper insight into the occurrence of piscivory and protracted spawning seasons in Hypseleotris spp. based on six years of sampling, and to cast the findings within the broader context of interrelationships between species complexes and their ecology. It is argued that what has been so far referred to as conspecific predation (cannibalism) in Hypseleotris spp. could be explained alternatively as 'congeneric' predation, or even as a combination of both. Furthermore, the presence of larvae all year round should be accounted for when assessing the effectiveness of taxon-specific water allocation programs. Better matching of taxonomy with ecology is, therefore, essential for the successful management and conservation of species complexes, and further insights may be provided through the assessment of altricial/precocial forms. Present study was aimed to investigate the community structure and size distribution of Icthyoplankton sampled from Kuantan River, Malaysia. Sampling was conducted from May 2015 to August 2015 using modified bubu light trap in Kuantan river and its immediate tributary (Belat river). A total of 78 larvae representing 4 families and 6 genus were sampled and size distribution were measured using Dino capture 2.0v portable microscope. Significant influences of selected water quality parameters on the distribution of Icthyoplankton were observed (p < 0.05). Representatives of larvae belong to gobiidae, eleotridae ambassidae and leiognathidae were recorded during sampling and few larvae were unable to be distinguished morphologically and hence stored for further DNA barcoding. Modified bubu light trap method designed and adopted in this study can be successfully used to sample Icthyoplankton in rivers where the depth and turbidity are the key limiting factors during sampling

Sulawesi is an island famous for its biodiversity, including many endemic species. In particular, Sulawesi has the highest number of gobies in the world, including species with potential as food and/or ornamental fishes. The exploration of freshwater ichthyofauna is important in the context of Indonesian and global biodiversity. This research aimed to identify gobies found in the Luwuk Banggai area of Central Sulawesi, as a contribution to the exploration of Indonesian ichthyofaunal biodiversity. Gobies were sampled from January to March 2019 in the Biak and Koyoan Rivers. The sampled fish were measured and identified based on morphological characteristics. A total of 52 specimens were collected, and identified as belonging to 17 species within two families, the Gobiidae and Eleotridae. Gobies from the Koyoan River comprised 32 specimens from 8 species, while 20 specimens belonging to species were found in the Biak River. Only two species were found in both rivers: Stiphodon semoni and Sicyopterus lagocephalus. These results augment the body of knowledge regarding the presence and distribution of gobies in Indonesia

The present study focuses on the structure and dynamics of the ichthyoplankton community of the Mahury estuary (French Guiana) and the factors that influence them. Data were collected on three mangrove sites located in the inner, middle, and outer areas of the estuary. More than 45 000 larvae were collected, representing 31 families and 67 taxa. The community was numerically dominated by few species; Engraulidae was the most abundant family, followed by Gobiidae, Eleotridae, and Sciaenidae. As expected, the most abundant larval taxa were estuarine and mangrove species, with the addition of freshwater species in the inner area of the estuary and taxa with marine affinities in the outer area. The densities of most species were influenced by site more than by season. Temporal variations in the dominant species were influenced largely by their life history strategy, with a majority of the fish species spending their entire life history in mangroves and estuaries.
