Carajasia cangae (Rubiaceae) is a narrow endemic species from the canga ecosystems of the Carajás National Forest that is facing extinction due to a limited range and habitat disturbance from hydroclimatological changes and mining activities. This study examines the influence of rhizospheric and endophytic bacteria on C. cangae seed germination to support conservation efforts. Soil samples, both rhizospheric and non-rhizospheric, as well as plant root tissues, were collected. Bacteria from these samples were subsequently isolated, cultured, and identified. DNA sequencing revealed the presence of 16 isolates (9 rhizospheric and 7 endophytic), representing 19 genera and 6 phyla: Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Chloroflexi. The endophytic isolates of Bacillus and the rhizospheric isolates of Planococcus and Lysinibacillus reduced the median germination time and initiation time, while the rhizospheric isolates Serratia and Comamonas increased the germination time and decreased the germination percentage in comparison to the control sample. These findings emphasize the crucial role of endophytic bacteria in the germination of C. cangae and highlight isolates that could have beneficial effects in the following stages of plant growth. Understanding the impact of endophytic and rhizospheric bacterial isolates on seed germination can enhance conservation efforts by shortening the germination period of this species and thereby improving seedling production. Additionally, this knowledge will pave the way for future research on the role of bacteria in the establishment of C. cangae.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are the first-line drug for eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), although it is estimated that there is a lack of histological remission in 50% of patients. This research aimed to identify pharmacogenetic biomarkers predictive of PPI effectiveness and to study their association with disease features. Peak eosinophil count (PEC) and the endoscopic reference score (EREFS) were determined before and after an eight-week PPI course in 28 EoE patients. The impact of the signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6), CYP2C19, CYP3A4, CYP3A5, and ABCB1 genetic variations on baseline PEC and EREFS, their reduction and histological response, and on EoE symptoms and comorbidities was analyzed. PEC reduction was higher in omeprazole-treated patients (92.5%) compared to other PPIs (57.9%, p = 0.003). STAT6 rs12368672 (g.18453G>C) G/G genotype showed higher baseline PEC values compared to G/C and C/C genotypes (83.2 vs. 52.9, p = 0.027). EREFS reduction in STAT6 rs12368672 G/G and G/C genotypes was higher than in the C/C genotype (36.7% vs. −75.0% p = 0.011). However, significance was lost after Bonferroni correction. Heartburn incidence was higher in STAT6 rs167769 (g.27148G>A) G/G patients compared to G/A (54.55% vs. 11.77%, p = 0.030). STAT6 rs12368672G>C and rs167769G>A variants might have a relevant impact on EoE status and PPI response. Further research is warranted to clarify the clinical relevance of these variants.

Objectives This study aimed to observe the effect of different finger rest positions on the muscular activity of the hand, forearm, arm, shoulder, thorax, and neck, as well as on the angular deviation from the neutral position of the neck, trunk, upper arm, and forearm on the working side during pre-clinical procedures. Methods An experimental laboratory study was performed. Response variables were muscle activation of the abductor pollicis, brachioradialis, biceps brachii, deltoid, pectoralis major, and right sternocleidomastoid muscles and angular deviation from the neutral position of the neck, trunk, arm, and forearm during simulated clinical procedures. Independent variable was finger-rest position during cavity preparation (no finger rest, usual rest, and ergonomic rest). Class I cavity preparations (N = 120) were performed on artificial first molars (16, 26, 36, and 46) (N = 120). Muscular activation was assessed by surface electromyography and angular deviations using Software for Postural Assessment (SAPO) version 0.69. One-way analysis of variance and Tukey’s or Games-Howell’s post-hoc tests were performed (α = 0.05). Results For the sternocleidomastoid muscle, there was no statistically significant difference between the different rest positions. For the deltoid muscle, work with no finger rest resulted in greater muscle activation (p < 0.001) during work on tooth 36. Regarding the pectoralis major and right brachioradialis muscles, we observed that for both teeth 16 and 26, working with ergonomic rest showed less muscle activation. Muscle activation of the right biceps brachii was higher for work with no rest in both the upper and lower arches, differing significantly only from the usual rest in tooth 16 (p < 0.001), usual rest and ergonomic rest in teeth 26 and 46 (p < 0.001), and only ergonomic rest in tooth 36 (p = 0.044). In the right abductor pollicis muscle, work with ergonomic rest resulted in less muscle activation for cavity preparation in teeth 16, 26, and 36, which was significantly different from work with no rest (p = 0.029, p < 0.001, and p = 0.013, respectively). Regarding angular deviation, it was observed that for tooth 16, there was a greater angular deviation of the arm when performing cavity preparations with no finger rest. For teeth 26 and 46, the ergonomic finger rest provided lower angular deviation from the neutral position of the right arm. For tooth 36, ergonomic rest provided less angular deviation from the neutral neck position. Conclusion In general, the use of non-active finger rest during simulated cavity preparations, regardless of the type of rest, provided less muscle activation and angular deviation from the neutral position of the body’s upper extremity when performing pre-clinical procedures.

Sustainable corn starch nanoparticles were prepared using media milling to stabilize omega-3-rich Pickering emulsions based on chia oil. The milling conditions were as follows: 24 h (milling time), 0.4–0.6 mm (bead diameter), 1600 rpm (impeller speed), 30% (volume occupied by the grinding media), 7% w/v (starch concentration), and 0, 0.07 and 1% w/v of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Nanosuspensions containing 7% w/v of starch and the three concentrations of SDS were filtered, centrifuged, homogenized, and spray-dried to obtain redispersible powders. The particle size ranges were 2288 ± 211, 385 ± 21, and 278 ± 11 nm with 0, 0.07 and 1% w/v of SDS, respectively. The most stable backscattering profiles obtained during a period of one week were observed with 0.07 and 1% w/v of SDS. Therefore, the surface dilatational rheology of these particles adsorbed at chia oil/water interfaces was studied. A rapid decrease in the interfacial tension within 1 h was obtained with 1% w/v of SDS (down to 3 mN/m). Moreover, the most stable particle size after redispersion was obtained with the highest concentration of SDS. Finally, Pickering emulsions were prepared, and significant coalescence was observed with 0 and 0.07% w/v of SDS (within a few minutes). Nonetheless, in the presence of 1% w/v of SDS, oil droplets showed mean diameters and polydispersity indexes of 280.13 ± 4.60 nm and 0.35 ± 0.02, respectively, with no significant variations during storage for around 1 month. The results show that wet-stirred media milling can be applied to produce sustainable, new food-grade starch nanoparticles able to deliver bioactive compounds from chia oil.

Open pit mining can cause loss in different ecosystems, including damage to habitats of rare and endemic species. Understanding the biology of these species is fundamental for their conservation, and to assist in decision-making. Sporobolus multiramosus is an annual grass endemic to the Amazon canga ecosystems, which comprise rocky outcrop vegetation covering one of the world’s largest iron ore reserves. Here, we evaluated whether nitric oxide aids S. multiramosus in coping with water shortages and examined the physiological processes behind these adaptations. nitric oxide application improved the water status, photosynthetic efficiency, biomass production, and seed production and germination of S. multiramosus under water deficit conditions. These enhancements were accompanied by adjustments in leaf and root anatomy, including changes in stomata density and size and root endodermis thickness and vascular cylinder diameter. Proteomic analysis revealed that nitric oxide promoted the activation of several proteins involved in the response to environmental stress and flower and fruit development. Overall, the results suggest that exogenous nitric oxide has the potential to enhance the growth and productivity of S. multiramosus. Enhancements in seed productivity have significant implications for conservation initiatives and can be applied to seed production areas, particularly for the restoration of native ecosystems.

Biological therapies only benefit one-third of patients with Crohn’s disease (CD). For this reason, a deeper understanding of the mechanisms by which biologics elicit their effect on intestinal mucosa is needed. Increasing evidence points toward the involvement of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the pathogenesis of CD, although their role remains poorly studied. We aimed to characterize lncRNA profiles in the ileum and colon from CD patients and evaluate the effect of anti-TNF-α treatment on their transcription. Terminal ileum and left colon samples from 30 patients (active CD = 10, quiescent CD = 10, and healthy controls (HCs) = 10) were collected for RNA-seq. The patients were classified according to endoscopic activity. Furthermore, biopsies were cultured with infliximab, and their transcriptome was determined by Illumina gene expression array. A total of 678 differentially expressed lncRNAs between the terminal ileum and left colon were identified in HCs, 438 in patients with quiescent CD, and 468 in patients with active CD. Additionally, we identified three new lncRNAs in the ileum associated with CD activity. No differences were observed when comparing the effect of infliximab according to intestinal location, presence of disease (CD vs. HC), and activity (active vs. quiescent). The expression profiles of lncRNAs are associated with the location of intestinal tissue, being very different in the ileum and colon. The presence of CD and disease activity are associated with the differential expression of lncRNAs. No modulatory effect of infliximab has been observed in the lncRNA transcriptome.

To aid the possible prevention of multidrug resistance in tumors and cause lower toxicity, a set of sixteen novel dihydropyridine carboxylic acids derivatives 3a–p were produced; thus, the activation of various ynones with triflic anhydride was performed, involving a nucleophilic addition of several bis(trimethylsilyl) ketene acetals, achieving good yields requiring easy workup. The target molecules were unequivocally characterized by common spectroscopic methods. In addition, two of the tested compounds (3a, and 3b) were selected to perform in silico studies due to the highest cytotoxic activity towards the HCT-15 cell line (7.94 ± 1.6 μM and 9.24 ± 0.9 μM, respectively). Employing theoretical calculations with density functional theory (DFT) using the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) showed that the molecular parameters correlate adequately with the experimental results. In contrast, predictions employing Osiris Property Explorer showed that compounds 3a and 3b present physicochemical characteristics that would likely make it an orally active drug. Moreover, the performance of Docking studies with proteins related to the apoptosis pathway allowed a proposal of which compounds could interact with PARP-1 protein. Pondering the obtained results (synthesis, in silico, and cytotoxic activity) of the target compounds, they can be judged as suitable antineoplastic agent candidates.

Objectives To determine the effect of different levels of Galilean loupe magnification on working posture as measured by compliance with ergonomic posture positions, angular deviation from the neutral position of the neck, and muscle activation in the neck and upper back region during simulated clinical conditions. Methods An experimental laboratory study was performed in which the dependent variables were compliance with ergonomic posture requirements while performing simulated restorative procedures in Restorative Dentistry, angular deviation from the neutral position of the neck, and muscle activation in the neck and upper back. The independent variable was the level of Galilean loupe magnification, which was tested at four levels (naked eye, 2.5× magnification, 3.0× magnification, and 3.5× magnification). The cavity preparations and Class I composite resin restorations were performed on artificial first molars on a mannequin in a dental chair. The Compliance Assessment of Dental Ergonomic Posture Requirements (CADEP) was used for the postural analysis; as was an analysis of the angular deviation from the neutral position of the neck and surface electromyography. Working posture was recorded on video over the course of the procedure. Participants were filmed from three different angles. The Compliance Assessment of Dental Ergonomic Posture Requirements (CADEP) assessed compliance with ergonomic posture requirements. A locally produced posture assessment software analyzed angular deviation. Surface electromyography bilaterally assessed activation of the sternocleidomastoid, descending trapezius and ascending trapezius muscles. Two-factor analysis of variance (ANOVA) and either Tukey’s post-hoc test or the Games-Howell post-hoc test were performed (α = 0.05). Results During the cavity preparations and restorations, the use of Galilean loupes at all magnifications positively influenced working posture as measured by participants’ compliance with ergonomic posture positions (p < 0.01) and neck angulation (p < 0.01); the use of these loupes did not affect muscle activation in the regions evaluated (p > 0.05). Conclusion The use of Galilean loupes had a positive effect on dental students’ working posture during the restoration procedures performed.

In the absence of antiviral therapy, HIV-1 infection progresses to a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations that are the result of an entangled contribution of host, immune and viral factors. The contribution of these factors is not completely established. Several investigations have described the involvement of the immune system in the viral control. In addition, distinct HLA-B alleles, HLA-B27, -B57-58, were associated with infection control. The combination of these elements and antiviral host restriction factors results in different clinical outcomes. The role of the viral proteins in HIV-1 infection has been, however, less investigated. We will review contributions dedicated to the pathogenesis of HIV-1 infection focusing on studies identifying the function of the viral envelope glycoprotein (Env) in the clinical progression because of its essential role in the initial events of the virus life-cycle. Some analysis showed that inefficient viral Envs were dominant in non-progressor individuals. These poorly-functional viral proteins resulted in lower cellular activation, viral replication and minor viral loads. This limited viral antigenic production allows a better immune response and a lower immune exhaustion. Thus, the properties of HIV-1 Env are significant in the clinical outcome of the HIV-1 infection and AIDS pathogenesis.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an idiopathic and chronic disorder that includes ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD). Both diseases show an uncontrolled intestinal immune response that generates tissue inflammation. Dendritic cells (DCs) are antigen-presenting cells that play a key role in tolerance maintenance in the gastrointestinal mucosa. Although it has been reported that DC recruitment by the intestinal mucosa is more prominent in IBD patients, the specific mechanisms governing this migration are currently unknown. In this study, the expression of several homing markers and the migratory profile of circulating DC subsets towards intestinal chemo-attractants were evaluated and the effect of biological drugs with different mechanisms of action, such as anti-TNFα or anti-integrin α4β7 (vedolizumab), on this mechanism in healthy controls (HCs) and IBD patients was also assessed. Our results revealed that type 2 conventional DCs (cDC2) express differential homing marker profiles in UC and CD patients compared to HCs. Indeed, integrin β7 was differentially modulated by vedolizumab in CD and UC. Additionally, although CCL2 displayed a chemo-attractant effect over cDC2, while biological therapies did not modulate the expression of the homing markers, we paradoxically found that anti-TNF-treated cDC2 increased their migratory capacity towards CCL2 in HCs and IBD. Our results therefore suggest a key role for cDC2 migration towards the intestinal mucosa in IBD, something that could be explored in order to develop novel diagnostic biomarkers or to unravel new immunomodulatory targets in IBD.

O paracetamol ou acetaminofeno pertence à classe dos anti-inflamatórios não esteroidais (AINEs) e é atualmente um dos fármacos de venda livre mais popular e consumido no mundo. Este medicamento apresenta um bom perfil de segurança quando usado em doses terapêuticas. No entanto, em casos de super-dosagem, intoxicação grave e insuficiência hepática podem ocorrer. O metabólito responsável pelos efeitos tóxicos é N-acetil-p-benzoquinonaimina (NAPQI), que após depleção dos níveis de glutationa (GSH), liga-se covalentemente a macromoléculas causando lesão nos hepatócitos. Visando disponibilizar um material fundamentado teoricamente no qual está descrito em detalhes os mecanismos que levam a hepatotoxicidade, os principais fatores que estão envolvidos nesse processo e uma solução imediata e eficaz na tentativa de reverter o quadro, foi realizada uma revisão bibliográfica utilizando material extraído das bases de dados SciElO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), BVS (Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde), Google Acadêmico e PubMed, como forma de explicar os eventos responsáveis por desencadear a toxicidade, como também medidas que podem ser tomadas diante de um paciente intoxicado com acetaminofen. Contudo, a obtenção de níveis séricos de paracetamol dentro 4-24 horas permite fazer uma estimativa da gravidade da intoxicação baseado no nomograma de Rumack-Matthews, que é um parâmetro utilizado para iniciar ou não o tratamento com N-acetilcisteína (NAC), antídoto padrão empregado em situações de overdose causado por paracetamol. Assim, a terapia antidotal de NAC visa fornecer a cisteína necessária para a síntese hepática de glutationa. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is the most severe clinical form of leishmaniasis, fatal if untreated. Vaccination is the most cost-effective approach to disease control; however, to date, no vaccines against human VL have been made available. This work examines the efficacy of a novel vaccine consisting of the Leishmania membrane protein KMP11, LEISH-F3+ (a recombinant fusion protein, composed of epitopes of the parasite proteins nucleoside hydrolase, sterol-24-c-methyltransferase, and cysteine protease B), and the sand fly salivary protein LJL143, in two dose ratios. The inclusion of the TLR4 agonist GLA-SE as an adjuvant, and the use of virosomes (VS) as a delivery system, are also examined. In a hamster model of VL, the vaccine elicited antigen-specific immune responses prior to infection with Leishmania infantum. Of note, the responses were greater when higher doses of KMP11 and LEISH-F3+ proteins were administered along with the GLA-SE adjuvant and/or when delivered within VS. Remarkably, hamsters immunized with the complete combination (i.e., all antigens in VS + GLA-SE) showed significantly lower parasite burdens in the spleen compared to those in control animals. This protection was underpinned by a more intense, specific humoral response against the KMP11, LEISH-F3+, and LJL143 antigens in vaccinated animals, but a significantly less intense antibody response to the pool of soluble Leishmania antigens (SLA). Overall, these results indicate that this innovative vaccine formulation confers protection against L. infantum infection, supporting the advancement of the vaccine formulation into process development and manufacturing and the conduction of toxicity studies towards future phase I human clinical trials.

We examined the reproductive strategy of two Amazonian quillworts (Isoëtes cangae and Isoëtes serracarajensis), endemic and threatened species of canga ecosystems. Sexual propagation was examined by in vitro fertilization assays, while asexual propagation was examined by tiller emission. Isoëtes cangae is an outcrossing species that reproduces exclusively by spore germination and is able to propagate by self- and cross-fertilization. Isoëtes serracarajensis reproduces asexually by emitting tillers from the plant corm, despite producing male and female sporangia. These distinct reproductive strategies in the different species may be linked to their contrasting habitats. Isoëtes cangae inhabit a permanent oligotrophic lake with mild environmental changes, while I. serracarajensis are found in temporary ponds facing severe seasonal drought, where asexual propagation may represent an adaptive advantage to the short growth period during access to water. We also observed different relationships between plant growth and reproductive traits between the species, despite their common production of sporophytes with high survival rates. Together, these results are of paramount importance for establishing conservation plans for both species considering the advantages of sexual propagation to maintain the genetic diversity of I. cangae and the diligent management required to do the same with asexually propagated I. serracarajensis.

In the industrial domain, one important research activity for cognitive robotics is the development of assistant robots. In this work, we show how the use of a cognitive assistant robot can contribute to (i) improving task effectiveness and productivity, (ii) providing autonomy for the human supervisor to make decisions, providing or improving human operators’ skills, and (iii) giving feedback to the human operator in the loop. Our approach is evaluated on variability reduction in a manual assembly system. The overall study and analysis are performed on a model of the assembly system obtained using the Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM) and tested in a robotic simulated scenario. Results show that a cognitive assistant robot is a useful partner in the role of improving the task effectiveness of human operators and supervisors.

Immunosuppression withdrawal after graft failure seems to favor sensitization. A high percentage of calculated panel-reactive antibody (cPRA) and the development of de novo donor specific antibodies (dnDSA) indicate human leukocyte antigen (HLA) sensitization and may hinder the option of retransplantation. There are no established protocols on the immunosuppressive treatment that should be maintained after transplant failure. A retrospective analysis including 77 patients who lost their first renal graft between 1 January 2006–31 December 2015 was performed. Two sera were selected per patient, one immediately prior to graft loss and another one after graft failure. cPRA was calculated by Single Antigen in all patients. It was possible to analyze the development of dnDSA in 73 patients. By multivariate logistic regression analysis, the absence of calcineurin inhibitor (CNI) at 6 months after graft failure was related to cPRA > 75% (OR 4.8, CI 95% 1.5–15.0, p = 0.006). The absence of calcineurin inhibitor (CNI) at 6 months after graft loss was significantly associated with dnDSA development (OR 23.2, CI 95% 5.3–100.6, p < 0.001). Our results suggest that the absence of CNI at the sixth month after graft loss is a risk factor for sensitization. Therefore, maintenance of an immunosuppressive regimen based on CNI after transplant failure should be considered when a new transplant is planned, since it seems to prevent HLA allosensitization.

Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent worldwide. It has been associated with heart failure (HF) given its immunoregulatory functions. In-vitro and animal models have shown protective roles through mechanisms involving procollagen-1, JNK2, calcineurin/NFAT, NF-κB, MAPK, Th1, Th2, Th17, cytokines, cholesterol-efflux, oxLDL, and GLUT4, among others. A 12-month follow-up in HF patients showed a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, with no seasonal variation (64.7−82.4%). A positive correlation between serum 25(OH)D concentration and dietary intake of vitamin D-rich foods was found. A significant inverse correlation with IL-1β (R = −0.78), TNF-α (R = −0.53), IL-6 (R = −0.42), IL-8 (R = −0.41), IL-17A (R = −0.31), LDL-cholesterol (R = −0.51), Apo-B (R = −0.57), total-cholesterol (R = −0.48), and triglycerides (R = −0.32) was shown. Cluster analysis demonstrated that patients from cluster three, with the lowest 25(OH)D levels, presented the lowermost vitamin D intake, IL-10 (1.0 ± 0.9 pg/mL), and IL-12p70 (0.5 ± 0.4 pg/mL), but the highest TNF-α (9.1 ± 3.5 pg/mL), IL-8 (55.6 ± 117.1 pg/mL), IL-17A (3.5 ± 2.0 pg/mL), total-cholesterol (193.9 ± 61.4 mg/dL), LDL-cholesterol (127.7 ± 58.2 mg/dL), and Apo-B (101.4 ± 33.4 mg/dL) levels, compared with patients from cluster one. Although the role of vitamin D in the pathogenesis of HF in humans is still uncertain, we applied the molecular mechanisms of in-vitro and animal models to explain our findings. Vitamin D deficiency might contribute to inflammation, remodeling, fibrosis, and atherosclerosis in patients with HF.

We have carried out a bibliometric study about the international scientific publications on clozapine. We have used the EMBASE and MEDLINE databases, and we applied bibliometric indicators of production, as Price’s Law on the increase of scientific literature. We also calculated the participation index (PI) of the different countries. The bibliometric data have also been correlated with some social and health data from the 12 most productive countries in biomedicine and health sciences. In addition, 5607 original documents dealing with clozapine, published between 1970 and 2013, were downloaded. Our results state non-fulfilment of Price’s Law, with scientific production on clozapine showing linear growth (r = 0.8691, vs. r = 0.8478 after exponential adjustment). Seven of the 12 journals with the highest numbers of publications on clozapine have an Impact Factor > 2. Among the countries generating clozapine research, the most prominent is the USA (PI = 24.32), followed by the UK (PI = 6.27) and Germany (PI = 5.40). The differences among countries on clozapine research are significantly related to economic variables linked to research. The scientific interest in clozapine remains remarkable, although after the application of bibliometric indicators of production, a saturation point is evident in the growth of scientific literature on this topic.

Green chemistry is the design of chemical processes that reduce or eliminate negative environmental impacts. The use and production of chemicals involve the reduction of waste products, non-toxic components, and improved efficiency. Green chemistry applies innovative scientific solutions in the use of new reagents, catalysts and non-classical modes of activation such as ultrasounds or microwaves. Kinetic behavior and non-thermal effect of poly(amic acid) synthesized from (6FDA) dianhydride and (BAPHF) diamine in a low microwave absorbing p-dioxane solvent at low temperature of 30, 50, 70 °C were studied, under conventional heating (CH), microwave (MW) and ultrasound irradiation (US). Results show that the polycondensation rate decreases (MW > US > CH) and that the increased rates observed with US and MW are due to decreased activation energies of the Arrhenius equation. Rate constant for a chemical process activated by conventional heating declines proportionally as the induction time increases, however, this behavior is not observed under microwave and ultrasound activation. We can say that in addition to the thermal microwave effect, a non-thermal microwave effect is present in the system.

In this paper, the authors review the history of the pharmacological treatment of bipolar disorder, from the first nonspecific sedative agents introduced in the 19th and early 20th century, such as solanaceae alkaloids, bromides and barbiturates, to John Cade’s experiments with lithium and the beginning of the so-called “Psychopharmacological Revolution” in the 1950s. We also describe the clinical studies and development processes, enabling the therapeutic introduction of pharmacological agents currently available for the treatment of bipolar disorder in its different phases and manifestations. Those drugs include lithium salts, valproic acid, carbamazepine, new antiepileptic drugs, basically lamotrigine and atypical antipsychotic agents (olanzapine, risperidone, quetiapine, ziprasidone, aripiprazole, asenapine, cariprazine and lurasidone). Finally, the socio-sanitary implications derived from the clinical introduction of these drugs are also discussed.

In order to verify the carbon source and trophic position of the main species of fishes, of the Paraná River floodplain, we analysed the proportion of stable carbon (delta13C) and nitrogen (delta15N) isotopes in muscle of fishes sampled in the rainy season. We analyzed adult individuals of Loricariichthys platymetopon, Schizodon borellii, Leporinus lacustris, Auchenipterus osteomystax, Iheringichthys labrosus, Leporinus friderici, and Serrasalmus marginatus. These data were compared with the results obtained by the analyzing stomach contents. The primary producers found in the Baía River were the C3 plants (riparian vegetation, macrophytes, periphyton, and phytoplankton) and the C4 plants (macrophytes). The results of the contribution analysis revealed that the carbon used by the species was derived from C3 plants. According to the trophic position estimates (diet and delta15N), the species primarily consumed Loricariichthys platymetopon, Schizodon borellii, Leporinus lacustris, and Leporinus friderici and, secondarily Auchenipterus osteomystax, Iheringichthys labrosus, and Serrasalmus marginatus. There was no significant difference between the two methods utilized.

A conservação de amostras para a determinação dos valores calóricos em estudos de bioenergética de peixes tem se apresentado, na literatura, com uma variedade de métodos. Com o intuito de identificar o efeito de conservantes sobre os resultados obtidos com as diferentes técnicas de conservação, foram coletados exemplares adultos de Hoplias aff. malabaricus (Osteichthyes, Erythrinidae) na planície de inundação do rio Paraná. De cada exemplar, foram retiradas 5 amostras da musculatura, as quais foram submetidas aos seguintes tratamentos: formol (4%), álcool (70%), congelamento (-10oC), nitrogênio líquido (-180oC) e estufa à 60oC (amostra controle). Depois de 30 dias, todas as amostras foram secas em estufa à 60oC e posteriormente procedeu-se à determinação calórica de cada uma das amostras em bomba calorimétrica. Com o objetivo de caracterizar a estrutura da ictiofauna dominante do reservatório de Itaipu e de sua área de influência, foram coletados 85.160 exemplares durante o período de novembro de 1983 a outubro de 1989 em 11 estações de amostragem distribuídas no corpo principal do reservatório (Guaíra, Santa Helena e Foz); em tributários da margem esquerda deste (Arroio Guaçu, Ocoí, São Francisco Falso e São Francisco Verdadeiro); no rio Paraná (a montante e a jusante do reservatório) e em tributários do rio Paraná (Piquiri e Iguatemi). Os resultados demonstraram um grande número de espécies com baixa freqüência e poucas espécies dominantes. Entre as espécies dominantes destacaram-se: Auchenipterus nuchalis, Hypophthalmus edentatus, Iheringichthys labrosus, Loricariichthys sp, Parauchenipterus galeatus, Plagioscion squamosissimus, Prochilodus lineatus, Pterodoras granulosus, Rhaphiodon vulpinus e Steindachnerina insculpta. São apresentadas indicações acerca dos locais de alimentação, reprodução e desenvolvimento para as referidas espécies.

A assembléia de peixes em áreas litorâneas de rios (Baía e Paraná) e lagoas (Figueira, Genipapo e Pousada) da planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná foi avaliada quanto à composição, estrutura em comprimento, abundância e padrões de dominância e diversidade de espécies. As amostragens foram realizadas em março de 1999, com o uso de redes de arrastes simples (rios) e triplos (lagoas) de 5mm de malha, resultando na captura de 10.517 indivíduos pertencentes a 51 espécies. Houve diferenças significativas entre as médias de comprimento-padrão das assembléias nos diferentes ambientes. Na lagoa Pousada registrou-se a maior densidade em número de peixes, bem como o maior valor de diversidade α, enquanto na lagoa Figueira verificou-se a maior biomassa por unidade de área. As espécies mais abundantes nesses ambientes foram Cheirodon notomelas (Eigenmann, 1915) (Baía e Figueira), Bryconamericus stramineus Eigenmann, 1908 (Paraná), Steindachnerina insculpta (Fernándes-Yépez, 1948) (Genipapo) e Moenkhausia intermédia Eigenmann, 1908 (Pousada). As zonas litorâneas das lagoas apresentaram baixas similaridades entre si, o que pode estar relacionado com o padrão de conectividade dos ambientes e a forte interrupção do pulso de inundação na planície no ciclo hidrológico de 1998/1999. Esta interrupção foi provocada pelo fechamento da UHE de Porto Primavera, tornou as lagoas mais diferenciadas neste ciclo e aumentou a heterogeneidade entre elas

Os isótopos estáveis vêm sendo utilizados na obtenção da taxa de turnover em animais aquáticos e representam mais uma ferramenta no auxílio à tomada de medidas de conservação, considerando que os impactos antrópicos ameaçam áreas específicas de alimentação, reprodução e crescimento de espécies em ambientes naturais. Na aqüicultura, por outro lado, o conhecimento da velocidade de conversão do alimento em tecido auxilia em melhores estimativas de produção. Neste sentido, o presente estudo pretende fazer uma síntese dos trabalhos realizados acerca das taxas de turnover em ecologia, com uso da técnica de isótopos estáveis. O turnover consiste na síntese do novo tecido e na substituição dos tecidos velhos utilizando a composição da dieta atual do animal. A taxa de turnover é dependente do tecido animal analisado, da fase de desenvolvimento, do tempo e dos parâmetros abióticos

Com o intuito de investigar a alocação de energia e a correlação entre esta e o fator de condição (K) de peixes da planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná (22º43’S; 53º32’W), foram selecionadas as espécies Serrasalmus marginatus (piscívora), Loricariichthys Platymetopon (detritívora), Leporinus friderici (onívora-herbívora) e Parauchenipterus galeatus (onívora-insetívora). As coletas foram realizadas em novembro/2002, março e setembro/2003. As amostras de músculos de indivíduos de ambos os sexos pertencentes a diferentes estádios de maturação gonadal tiveram seu conteúdo calórico determinado em bomba calorimétrica e os resultados comparados com o K. Diferenças significativas foram encontradas entre os sexos e estádios de maturação. A espécie detritívora posicionou-se entre as onívoras e apiscívora quanto ao conteúdo calórico e não foram identificadas diferenças entre as onívoras. A maturação gonadal exerceu efeito sobre a alocação de energia e o K, enquanto este último não se correlacionou com a energia armazenada nos músculos

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo investigar a hipótese de que o material orgânico sedimentar, conhecida fonte de alimento para espécies de peixes exploradores de fundo, apresenta variações na concentração de acordo com o tamanho das partículas do sedimento e proximidade com a margem do rio. A obtenção das amostras de sedimento foi realizada no período de seca e de chuva em três subsistemas da planície de inundação do rio Paraná, sendo estabelecidos três pontos de coleta: margem direita, centro e margem esquerda. As amostras (n=88) foram submetidas ao fracionamento granulométrico (< 70µm; entre 70 e 200µm; > 200µm). Observou-se menor variabilidade na concentração de matéria orgânica para as amostras do centro e maior para partículas menores que 70µm. Identificou-se o efeito do período de chuvas sobre a concentração de matéria orgânica aderida as frações de sedimento das secções transversais e nos ambientes amostrados. Concluiu-se, com base na literatura, que as espécies de peixes que ingerem detrito com partículas < 70µm, obtêm mais matéria orgânica do sedimento

Com o intuito de quantificar o conteúdo calórico das plantas vasculares de dois reservatórios do Estado do Paraná, bem como sua variabilidade espacial e entre grupos ecológicos, foram realizadas amostragens em dezembro de 2002, nas zonas fluvial, de transição e lacustre dos reservatórios Mourão e Rosana. Foram amostradas, ao acaso, folhas maduras de plantas aquáticas e da vegetação ripária de diferentes indivíduos (n = 5), pertencentes à mesma espécie. Para obtenção do conteúdo calórico, em cal.g-1 de peso seco, as amostras foram maceradas em moinho de bola e submetidas à combustão em bomba calorimétrica PARR. Os dados foram submetidos a uma ANOVA modelo nulo, utilizando-se o programa EcoSim versão 7.44. Foi constatado que as plantas vasculares analisadas apresentaram ampla variabilidade calórica. Além disso, foram significativas as variabilidades espacial e entre os grupos ecológicos, não sendo recomendável o uso de um único valor calórico para estes produtores primários em modelos de fluxo de energia, sendo necessária, uma inspeção preliminar da amplitude e dos fatores que são determinantes de tal variação

O objetivo do presente estudo foi verificar através de técnicas moleculares, RAPD e ISSR aliadas à caracterização morfológica da concha dos bivalves, se os indivíduos morfologicamente distintos de Corbicula fluminea amostrados no reservatório de Rosana pertencem a espécies diferentes. O tecido muscular do pé dos três grupos (G1, G2 e G3) de Corbicula foi removido e congelado em nitrogênio líquido para a análise do DNA. As variáveis morfométricas das conchas indicaram diferenças significativas entre os indivíduos de Corbicula. Por outro lado, as análises moleculares revelaram similaridade genética, evidenciando a não existência de polimorfismo molecular. Os resultados confirmam que os dois grupos diferentes morfologicamente também pertencem a espécie C. fluminea, demonstrando a ocorrência de plasticidade fenotípica, provavelmente causada por fatores bióticos ou ambientais

Com objetivo de determinar o conteúdo calórico de grupos tróficos de peixes, no reservatório do rio Manso, Estado do Mato Grosso, e possíveis diferenças espaciais, foram selecionadas as espécies: Leporinus friderici (onívora), Acestrochynchus pantaneiro (piscívora) e Schizodon borellii (herbívora), amostradas entre dezembro de 2002 e abril de 2004. Dos indivíduos em repouso, extraíram-se músculos próximos a nadadeira dorsal, os quais foram enxaguados em água destilada, e secos à 60oC. Posteriormente, foram macerados e queimados em bomba calorimétrica (Parr 1261). Embora tenham tido valores calóricos decrescentes da espécie herbívora para a piscívora, tais valores não diferiram significativamente (p >0.05). Os maiores valores de energia foram observados nas baías. Os machos de A. pantaneiro apresentaram valores superiores àqueles observados para as fêmeas, e os exemplares amostrados no reservatório, tiveram os menores valores calóricos e a maior amplitude de variação. Conclui-se que o conteúdo de energia dos peixes, pode variar dependendo das características do biótopo amostrado

Total and organic mercury concentrations were determined in the liver, kidney, muscle, skin, brain and blubber collected from 12 common dolphins, Delphinus delphis, stranded along the Portuguese coast between 1998 and 2003. The liver was the preferential organ for Hg accumulation, while the lowest values were detected in the blubber. Total and organic Hg concentrations in the liver, skin and blubber of dolphins were positively correlated to the levels found in muscle. Positive correlations were also observed between liver and kidney, and skin and blubber. Muscle levels increased linearly with length, while those of liver and kidney varied exponentially for skin, brain and blubber, were sparse. The percentage of organic Hg decreased linearly with length in muscle and exponentially in liver and kidney, accounting for only 10–30% of the total Hg in adults. The concentrations found in this work were lower than those reported by other authors for the same species from southern European coasts.

The relationship between habitats and the ichthyofauna composition in the Parque Nacional das Emas (PNE) and adjacent areas (the Araguaia and Sucuriú rivers) are provided and could be applied in determining the Park's future zoning. Samples of the ichthyofauna and limnological parameters were obtained during both dry (September 1999) and wet (December 1999) seasons. Ichthyofauna collections resulted in the capture of 4,740 specimens of 22 species. The most abundant species in the Araguaia River during the two sampling seasons were Astyanax sp. 2 and Hasemania sp. In the Sucuriú River and PNE, Astyanax scabripinnis cf. paranae and Hoplias aff. malabaricus were the most frequent species. The largest number of species and diversity index were recorded for the Araguaia River. However, sound management policies require more detailed studies on the fish communities of the Cerrado biome.
