A new species, Indigofera jaisalmerica CS Purohit and RN Kulloli. sp nov. from Indian desert (Jaisalmer district, Rajasthan, India) is described and illustrated. The new species is closely related with Indigofera cordifolia Roth, but differs in having a leaf more than 2 cm long with scattered hairs on both surfaces, trichomes antler shape on leaf surface, inflorescence axillary spicate with 14–17 flowers, calyx slightly longer than flower, fruit strictly one-seeded and enclosed by calyx lobes. Detailed taxonomic description along with colored photo plate, distribution map, SEM study of leaf and seeds, and associates are provided here for its easy identification.

Millions of pregnant, HIV-infected women take reverse transcriptase inhibitors, such as zidovudine (azidothymidine or AZT), during pregnancy. Reverse transcription plays important roles in early development, including regulation of telomere length (TL) and activity of transposable elements (TE). So we evaluated the effects of AZT on embryo development, TL, and copy number of an active TE, Long Interspersed Nuclear Element 1 (LINE-1), during early development in a murine model. Experimental study. In vivo fertilized mouse zygotes from B6C3F1/B6D2F1 mice were cultured for 48 h in KSOM with no AZT (n = 45), AZT 1 μM (n = 46) or AZT 10 μM (n = 48). TL was measured by single-cell quantitative PCR (SC-pqPCR) and LINE-1 copy number by qPCR. The percentage of morulas at 48 h, TL and LINE-1 copy number were compared among groups. Exposure to AZT 1 μM or 10 μM significantly impairs early embryo development. TL elongates from oocyte to control embryos. TL in AZT 1 μM embryos is shorter than in control embryos. LINE-1 copy number is significantly lower in oocytes than control embryos. AZT 1 μM increases LINE-1 copy number compared to oocytes controls, and AZT 10 μM embryos. AZT at concentrations approaching those used to prevent perinatal HIV transmission compromises mouse embryo development, prevents telomere elongation and increases LINE-1 copy number after 48 h treatment. The impact of these effects on the trajectory of aging of children exposed to AZT early during development deserves further investigation.

The harmlessness of the new hygienic bedding material and the effect of broilers on the body have been studied. During the experiment, it was found that the new hygienic litter material, representing waste from the woodworking industry, treated with thermochemical and biotechnological methods, does not have an irritating effect on the skin, does not irritate the mucous membranes of the eyes and allergic reactions in rabbits, but, on the contrary, improves certain morphobiochemical and immunological parameters of the body’s blood are goslings. Ultimately, this was reflected in an increase in red blood cells by 7.04 %, hemoglobin – 5.20 %, total protein – 6.3 %, total calcium – 5.8 %, inorganic phosphorus – 5.1 %, glucose – 5,4 % compared with the control.

Pearl millet flour, particularly wholegrain flour, is highly susceptible to development of rancid aromas and flavors during storage. Grain decortication and extrusion cooking using a friction-heated single-screw extruder were investigated as potential flour stabilization processes. Raw and extruded wholegrain and decorticated grain pearl millet flours were stored at ambient (25°C) and elevated (40°C) temperatures for 6 months. A trained descriptive sensory panel developed a lexicon of 44 attributes to profile the aroma, flavor, and texture of porridges prepared from the flours. Grain decortication alone did not show an effect on the aroma and flavor profile of porridge. Extrusion cooking of both wholegrain and decorticated flours increased cereal-like aromas (branny, canned sweetcorn, sweet, and wheaty) and flavor (starchy), as well as stiffness and cohesiveness of the porridges. The porridges from the extruded pearl millet flours stored for up to 6 months at ambient and elevated temperatures did not show any indications of rancidity. In contrast, rancidity-associated aromas (chemical, painty, and soapy) and flavor (chemical) increased in porridges from the raw flours stored for 4 weeks and longer. These results indicate that grain decortication did not sufficiently reduce fat content to prevent oxidation, while extrusion cooking stabilized the pearl millet flours. In addition, intensified "cereal-like" aromas and flavors were probably due to Maillard reactions occurring during extrusion cooking. Resulting aroma compounds could have been immobilized in the extruded matrix and not released during flour storage. The application of extrusion cooking with a simple friction-heated single-screw extruder is a viable process for both precooking and extending the shelf life of pearl millet flours. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This study demonstrates the potential of extrusion cooking to precook wholegrain pearl millet while preventing fat rancidity in wholegrain pearl millet flour, thereby improving the sensory quality and stability of pearl millet food products. The extensive sensory characterization of pearl millet porridge-type foods can serve as a guidance tool for development, improvement, and quality control of pearl millet foods. Furthermore, it establishes the efficacy of simple friction-heated, single-screw extruders for commercial manufacture of ready-to-eat wholegrain pearl millet food products by small and medium scale entrepreneurs.

Background Vacuum package storage is commonly applied to reduce post-harvest deterioration in minimally processed cassava roots. However, the influence of vacuum packaging conditions on root end-use quality is poorly understood. Hence, the effects of vacuum packaged storage at ambient, refrigerated and freezing temperatures on microflora, cassava tissue structure and starch extraction by wet milling were studied. Results Vacuum packaged storage temperature strongly affected cassava root quality. Minimal adverse effects were obtained with frozen storage. With refrigerated storage, there was negligible microbial growth but some disruption of the parenchyma cell wall structure suggestive of chilling injury. With ambient temperature storage, there was considerable Lactobacilli dominated fermentation. This caused substantial cell degradation, probably due to their production of extracellular cellulolytic and other cell wall degrading enzymes. A benefit of this cell wall breakdown was that it substantially improved starch extraction with wet milling from the stored cassava pieces; by 18% with pieces that had been ambient vacuum packaged and wet milled using a 2,000 μm opening screen. However, ambient temperature storage resulted in some starch granule pitting due to the action of extracellular amylases from the fermenting microorganisms. Conclusion The best vacuum packaging storage conditions for minimally processed cassava depends on application and cost. For short-term storage, refrigeration would be best for vegetable-type products. For several months storage, freezing is best. For wet milling applications, this could be combined with subsequent short-term ambient temperature storage as it improves starch extraction efficiency and could reduce distribution energy costs. This study focused on evaluation of antioxidant, α-amylase inhibitory activities and photo protective properties of peels of Nephelium lappaceum Linn. (rambutan); Malwana special. Methanolic extract of peels was sequentially partitioned in hexane, dichloromethane (DCM) and aqueous methanol. The methanol extract showed a significantly (p < 0.05) higher DPPH radical scavenging activity than that of butylated hydroxytoluene. Among the fractions, the highest total phenolic content (TPC) was found in the aqueous methanol fraction. DCM and aqueous methanol fractions were rich in flavonoids. In vitro α-amylase inhibitory activity of the aqueous methanol fraction was also significantly higher than the standard drug, acarbose. Partially purified aqueous methanol fraction of rambutan peels exhibited UV-B absorption with a moderate solar protection factor. The results revealed that the peels of Nephelium lappaceum Linn., Malwana specialcan be considered as a promising source for the development of natural antioxidant, cosmeceutical sunscreen and antidiabetic agents.

Objectives Evolutionary theorists have debated the adaptive significance of developmental plasticity in organisms with long lifespans such as humans. This debate in part stems from uncertainty regarding the timing of sensitive periods. Does sensitivity to environmental signals fluctuate across development or does it steadily decline? We investigated developmental plasticity in brown adipose tissue (BAT) among indigenous Siberians in order to explore the timing of phenotypic sensitivity to cold stress. Methods BAT thermogenesis was quantified using infrared thermal imaging in 78 adults (25 men; 33 women). Cold exposure during gestation, infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence was quantified using: (1) the average ambient temperature across each period; (2) the number of times daily temperature dropped below -40°F during each period. We also assessed past cold exposure with a retrospective survey of participation in outdoor activities. Results Adult BAT thermogenesis was significantly associated with the average temperature (p = 0.021), the number of times it was below -40°F (p = 0.026), and participation in winter outdoor activities (p = 0.037) during early childhood. Conclusions Our results suggest that early childhood represents an important stage for developmental plasticity, and that culture may play a critical role in shaping the timing of environmental signals. The findings highlight a new pathway through which the local consequences of global climate change may influence human biology, and they suggest that ambient temperature may represent an understudied component of the developmental origins of health and disease.

Extreme climatic conditions of the North with low temperatures and the traditional diet are responsible for development of a specific mechanisms of lipid metabolism among the indigenous peoples of the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic. The evolutionary patterns of lipid metabolism fixed in the genome in the form of polymorphic genetic markers are important for the development of regional healthcare programs for prevention of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases. The aim of the study was to analyze the characteristic features of lipid metabolism and metabolic disorders in the Yakut population. A systematic review of the results of studies of lipid profile parameters and key candidate genes involved in lipid metabolism among the indigenous inhabitants of Yakutia over the past 10 years was performed. The available evidence suggests that in indigenous inhabitants of Yakutia, the indicators of lipid metabolism are not a matter for concern. Participants of the most studies have a high concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low concentrations of triglycerides and low plasma atherogenic index, which are associated with physiological adaptation to environmental conditions. However, changes in dietary patterns including increased consumption of carbohydrates and lifestyle changes including reduced physical activity and abandonment of traditional activities have led to the spread of metabolic disorders in recent decades. Prevalence estimates for the metabolic syndrome in the indigenous inhabitants of Yakutia aged 20 years or older vary from 4.9 % in men to 49.4 % in women in the Arctic regions. We also discuss the mechanisms of lipid metabolism and the role of LepR, LPL, CETP, IL6, PON1 genes in the development of metabolic disorders in the Yakut population.

Objective: A comprehensive study was conducted to study the effects of partition of variance on accuracy of genetic parameters and genetic trends of economic traits in Vanaraja male line/project directorate-1 (PD-1) chicken.Methods: Variance component analysis utilizing restricted maximum likelihood animal model was carried out with five generations data to delineate the population status, direct additive, maternal genetic, permanent environmental effects, besides genetic trends and performance of economic traits in PD-1 chickens. Genetic trend was estimated by regression of the estimated average breeding values (BV) on generations.Results: The body weight (BW) and shank length (SL) varied significantly (p≤0.01) among the generations, hatches and sexes. The least squares mean of SL at six weeks, the primary trait was 77.44±0.05 mm. All the production traits, viz., BWs, age at sexual maturity, egg production (EP) and egg weight were significantly influenced by generation. Model four with additive, maternal permanent environmental and residual effects was the best model for juvenile growth traits, except for zero-day BW. The heritability estimates for BW and SL at six weeks (SL6) were 0.20±0.03 and 0.17±0.03, respectively. The BV of SL6 in the population increased linearly from 0.03 to 3.62 mm due to selection. Genetic trend was significant (p≤0.05) for SL6, BW6, and production traits. The average genetic gain of EP40 for each generation was significant (p≤0.05) with an average increase of 0.38 eggs per generation. The average inbreeding coefficient was 0.02 in PD-1 line.Conclusion: The population was in ideal condition with negligible inbreeding and the selection was quite effective with significant genetic gains in each generation for primary trait of selection. The animal model minimized the over-estimation of genetic parameters and improved the accuracy of the BV, thus enabling the breeder to select the suitable breeding strategy for genetic improvement.

Aim: The present study aimed at reporting the occurrence of pest, Pyrausta panopealis on sweet basil Ocimum basilicum. The biological parameters and population dynamics of the pest was studied on its newly reported host plant. Methodology: Description of P. panopealis was done using morphological and molecular approaches. Male and female genitalia of adults were dissected for morphological identification. DNA was isolated from insect sample (adult legs) and amplified using mtCOI primers (LCO 1490; HCO 2198). The larva of P. panopealis was reared on sweet basil under laboratory conditions for observing the growth parameters. Results: Male genitalia with distinct spoon-shaped clasper; female genitalia corpus bursae with appendix bursa. The sequenced DNA product was submitted to NCBI- GenBank (Accession No: Mk559412). The mean incubation period, larval period and pupal period of the pest was 3.19 days; 13.81 days; 5.40 and 6.27 days. The total life span of male and female insects ranged from 22 to 33 days and 24 to 35 days, respectively. The fecundity of adult varied from 91 to 131 (average 111.75 eggs). The peak population of pest (11.5 larvae/ plant) was recorded during 32nd standard meteorological week, during which all the observed plants were infested by larvae of P. panopealis. Interpretation: This is the first report of association between P. panopealis and sweet basil. The data on life cycle parameters, seasonal incidence and severity can be used for developing integrated pest management strategies to P. panopealis on sweet basil. Bacteria of the Xanthomonas genus are mainly phytopathogens of a large variety of crops of economic importance worldwide. Xanthomonas spp. rely on an arsenal of protein effectors, toxins and adhesins to adapt to the environment, compete with other microorganisms and colonize plant hosts, often causing disease. These protein effectors are mainly delivered to their targets by the action of bacterial secretion systems, dedicated multiprotein complexes that translocate proteins to the extracellular environment or directly into eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. Type I to type VI secretion systems have been identified in Xanthomonas genomes. Recent studies have unravelled the diverse roles played by the distinct types of secretion systems in adaptation and virulence in xanthomonads, unveiling new aspects of their biology. In addition, genome sequence information from a wide range of Xanthomonas species and pathovars have become available recently, uncovering a heterogeneous distribution of the distinct families of secretion systems within the genus. In this review, we describe the architecture and mode of action of bacterial type I to type VI secretion systems and the distribution and functions associated with these important nanoweapons within the Xanthomonas genus.

Dirofilaria are tissue nematodes which can cause zoonotic diseases and have been reported from all over the world. They are transmitted by zooanthropophilic arthropods. The genus causes subcutaneous ocular, pulmonary, and lesions in other subcutaneous tissues. The most commonly implicated species are Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens. Confirmation of the diagnosis of dirofilariasis is mainly dependent upon microbiological identification of the parasite by macroscopical and microscopical analysis and histology. Documented reports from India are mainly from South India and of ocular presentations by D. immitis. Hence, this case of subcutaneous dirofilariasis is being presented. The present case was a 65-year-old female who presented with a swelling over the left lower side of the neck for 1 month. The patient underwent surgery for the mass and the lesion was excised. The mass was sent for microbiological identification. The parasite showed a cuticle, which had longitudinal as well as transverse striations. The parasite also had a body cavity, which had internal organs and structures. The worm was identified as Dirofilaria spp. based on morphological features, both microscopic and macroscopic. It is likely to be D. repens due to the presentation as a subcutaneous nodule with which it is more associated.

Brassica nigra, the black mustard, is an annual plant cultivated for its black or dark brown seeds, which are the members of Brassica genus (Family: Brassicaceae). It is an annual weedy plant which has immense edible as well as medicinal value. Brassica nigra consist of thirty-seven different species. Brassica vegetables contain low fat, high vitamin, mineral and fibre as well as various phytochemicals. It prevents oxidative stress, induce detoxification enzymes, stimulate the immune system, reduce cancer risk, and inhibit malign transformation and carcinogenic mutations in addition to reduce the proliferation of cancer cells. Globally cancer is a disease which severely effects the human population. There is a constant demand for new therapies to treat and prevent this life-threatening disease. Scientific and research interest is sketch its attention towards naturally-derived compounds as they are considered to have less toxic side effects compared to current treatments such as chemotherapy. The present study explores the anti-cancer activities of Brassica nigra plant comprising various chemical constituents and is necessitated by the current interest in plant products as a cheaper and far better alternative than the synthetic drugs available. This current review will bring concise information about the known mechanism of action and cancer activities of Brassica nigra.

Endolichenic fungi (ELF) have been recognized as a promising source of bioactive secondary metabolites. Sri Lanka, a biodiversity hotspot, harbours a remarkable diversity in mangrove ecosystems. In the present study, endolichenic fungi obtained from mangrove lichens of Puttalam lagoon were studied for their secondary metabolites. An endolichenic fungus, Neurospora ugadawe, isolated from the lichen host Graphis tsunodae Zahlbr. was identified up to the species level. Secondary metabolites of N. ugadawe were extracted into ethyl acetate and crude extract showed promising antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Bioassay guided separation on silica gel column chromatography and preparative TLC were performed to isolate the bioactive pure compounds. Two novel bioactive pure compounds were identified as Neurosporalol 1 and Neurosporalol 2. Neurosporalol 1 showed the highest antioxidant activity compared with the positive control BHT. Further, this compound showed very low anti-inflammatory activity compared to that of the positive control aspirin. Neurosporalol 2 showed comparable antioxidant and moderate anti-inflammatory activities.

Breeding value (BV), genetic parameters and additive genetic, and maternal effects were evaluated on growth and production traits utilizing data from eight generations employing animal model in a rural male parent line (PD-6) chicken at ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad, India. The least squares means (LSM) for body weight (BW) and shank length (SL) up to 6 weeks of age varied significantly (p ≤ .01) among the generations and hatches. BW increased significantly (p ≤ .01) over the generations and decreased with the hatches. Sex also had a significant effect on BW and shank length except for BW at 0 day (BW0). LSM for BW (BW6) and Shank length (SL6) at 6 weeks of age were 598.84 ± 0.79 g and 74.57 ± 0.04 mm, respectively. Males recorded significantly (p ≤ .01) higher BWs and shank length. All the production traits were significantly (p ≤ .01) influenced by the generation effect. The overall LSM for age at sexual maturity (ASM), egg production at 40 weeks (EP40) and egg weight at 40 weeks (EW40) were 164.93 ± 0.23 days, 74.66 ± 0.40 eggs and 54.79 ± 0.08 g, respectively. Model 3 with additive, maternal permanent environmental and residual effects was the appropriate model for BW2, BW4, BW6, SL4 and SL6, whereas Model 4 with maternal effects was the best for BW0. The heritability estimates for BW6 and SL6 were 0.22 ± 0.02 and 0.18 ± 0.02, respectively. Model 1 with additive direct and residual effects was the best appropriate model for all the production traits. The heritability estimates of EP40 and EW40 were 0.16 ± 0.04 and 0.34 ± 0.05, respectively. BW and shank length were highly correlated with significant (p ≤ .05) positive association from different components. The correlation coefficient from direct additive component between egg production and BW40 was negative, while it was positive with less magnitude between egg production and BW20. The egg production and egg weights had a negative association at different ages. BV of SL6, the primary trait of selection, was significant (p ≤ .05) across the generations and increased linearly with an average genetic gain of 1.05 mm per generation. BV of BW6 was also significant (p ≤ .05) and increased linearly as correlated response with an average genetic response of 22.34 g per generation. BV of EP40 showed an increasing trend with a genetic gain of 0.02 eggs per generation. The EW 40 also increased linearly with an average genetic gain of 0.06 g. The average inbreeding coefficient of the population was 0.015. The study concluded that the population was in ideal status with a linearly increasing trend of average BV with negligible inbreeding over the eight generations of selection.

Selection for trait of interest is a major problem in cattle production when faced with the challenge of varied growth traits in different genotypes. Low understanding of the production potentials of these cattle breeds constitute problems in effective improvement of physical body characteristics. A total of 18 cattle was used to characterize the Nigerian local cattle genotypes based on quantitative traits. Three genotypic groups {White Fulani (WF), N'Dama (ND) and White Fulani x N'Dama (WFxND)} crosses were used for the experiment. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of climate-smart integrated fertilizer management on proximate qualities and lycopene contents of three watermelon (Citrullus lanatus)varieties grown in sandy loam soil. The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of the Department of Agricultural Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka between the months of Augustto October 2017cropping season. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design, with three replications, three main plots (Citrullus lanatus varieties (Sugar baby, Koalack and Charleston grey))and six sub-plots (fertilization treatments). Climate-smart integrated fertilizer considered was combination of Goat manure (GM) and Nitrogen Phosphorus PotassiumNPK15: 15: 15 fertilizer which is regarded as most nutrient-rich fertilizer with climate change mitigation and adaptation potential. The study found that the pH of the watermelon varieties were statistically similar and that Charleston grey treated with 50 kg ha-1NPK + 15 t ha-1GM had the highest interactive effect on pH value which was statistically similar with 100 kg ha-1NPK + 10 t ha-1GM treatment. It was discovered that Koalack variety had the highest moisture contents when treated with 100 kg ha-1NPK + 10 t ha-1GM, crude protein content when treated with 150 kg ha-1NPK + 5 t ha-1GM, crude fibre content when treated with 20 t ha-1GM, ether extract and total soluble solid contents when treated with 50 kg ha-1NPK + 15 t ha-1GM. For the lycopene content, it was found that Sugar baby variety had the highest mean value (0.61g/100g) when compared with Charleston grey and Koalack varieties. Sugar baby variety treated with 20t/ha-1GM had highest (0.89g/100g) interactive effect when compared with other varieties and fertilizer treatments. In conclusion, the proximate qualities and lycopene contents of the three varieties increased with the increase in the amount of GM contents of the fertilizer combinations in sandy loam soil. Climate-smart integrated fertilizer improves the proximate qualities of Koalack variety and the lycopene contents of Sugar baby variety more than in other varieties grown in the same sandy loam soil. Therefore, climate-smart integrated fertilizer is recommended for the production of the identified Citrullus lanatus varieties as a nutrition sensitive production strategy in sandy loam soils by farmers in study area.

The Tasmanian salmon industry had remained relatively free of major viral diseases until the emergence of pilchard orthomyxovirus (POMV). Originally isolated from wild pilchards, POMV is of concern to the industry as it can cause high mortality in farmed salmon (Salmo salar). Field observations suggest the virus can spread from pen to pen and between farms, but evidence of passive transmission in sea water was unclear. Our aim was to establish whether direct contact between infected and naïve fish was required for transmission, and to examine viral infection dynamics. Atlantic salmon post-smolts were challenged with POMV by either direct exposure via cohabitation or indirect exposure via virus-contaminated sea water. POMV was transmissible in sea water and direct contact between fish was not required for infection. Head kidney and heart presented the highest viral loads in early stages of infection. POMV survivors presented low viral loads in most tissues, but these remained relatively high in gills. A consistent feature was the infiltration of viral-infected melanomacrophages in different tissues, suggesting an important role of these in the immune response to POMV. Understanding POMV transmission and host-pathogen interactions is key for the development of improved surveillance tools, transmission models and ultimately for disease prevention.

Many changes occur in the rumen as calves transition from consuming a liquid diet to a completely solid diet. These changes can influence growth and calf health, being greatly affected by preweaning diet as well as the transitional steps used to wean calves. A 2 × 2 factorial design of moderate [MOD; 0.66 kg of dry matter (DM)] or high (HI; up to 1.1 kg of DM) feeding rates of milk replacer (MR) and abrupt (AB; 7-d step-down) or gradual weaning (GR; 21-d step-down) was used to study how preweaning program affects calf performance from 2 to 4 mo of age. Calves (n = 50) were randomly assigned to 1 of the 4 preweaning treatments. For the following 56-d grower portion of the experiment, calves were grouped into 12 pens based on MR program, with 4 to 5 calves per pen. Data were analyzed as a completely randomized design, with repeated measures when applicable, by PROC MIXED in SAS (version 9.4; SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC). All calves received ad libitum access to water and a textured starter [42% starch and 20% crude protein (CP)] blended with 5% chopped grass hay. Overall, apparent digestibility coefficients (dC) of DM, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber were greater for MOD compared with HI, and apparent dC of DM and ADF were greater for GR than for AB. No significant differences were detected between organic matter, CP, fat, starch, or sugar dC based on treatment, and no interactions were observed. However, by d 56 only starch dC differed by treatment. Weaning body weight (BW), hip width (HW), and hip height (HH) were greater for HI compared with MOD calves. Weaning HH was greater for AB than for GR calves. However, final BW, HW, HH, and body condition score, as well as average daily gain, did not differ among treatments. An interaction occurred where feed efficiency (gain/feed) was reduced with GR weaning in MOD, whereas the opposite occurred in the HI group. When feeding calves a moderate level of MR, a several-step gradual weaning is not necessary to ensure growth and development; however, calves should be gradually weaned when offered a high level of MR.

Variance and genetic parameters were estimated for growth and production traits of synthetic broiler female line (PB-2) using REML animal model to delineate the population status, direct additive, maternal genetic, permanent environmental effects, besides genetic trends and performance of economic traits. The overall least squares mean (LSM) for body weights at 0 day (BW0), at 2 weeks (BW2), at 4 weeks (BW4), at 5 weeks (BW5), shank length at 5 weeks (SL5), and breast angle at 5 weeks (BA5) of age were 40.03 g, 207.40 g, 589.58 g, 828.51 g, 76.89 cm, and 80.78°, respectively. The overall LSM for egg production up to 40 weeks of age (EP40) and egg weight at 40 weeks (EW40) were 66.02 eggs and 58.23 g, respectively. The heritability estimates using the best model for BW0, BW2, BW4, BW5, SL5, and BA5 were 0.06 ± 0.03, 0.19 ± 0.03, 0.15 ± 0.03, 0.14 ± 0.02, 0.08 ± 0.02, and 0.02 ± 0.01, respectively. The heritability estimates were low to moderate in the magnitude for all early growth traits. The heritability estimate for egg production up to 40 weeks (EP40) was 0.30 ± 0.05. The heritability estimates for adult body weights at 20 and 40 weeks of age (BW 20 and BW 40), age at sexual maturity (ASM), and egg weight at 40 weeks (EW40) were 0.21 ± 0.04, 0.19 ± 0.04, 0.16 ± 0.03, and 0.33 ± 0.05, respectively, and the estimates were moderate to high in magnitude. Model 4 with additive, maternal permanent environmental, residual, and phenotypic effects was the best model for growth traits except for BW0 and BA5. The average genetic gain observed in primary trait (BW5) over the five generations was 13.62 g per each generation indicating effective selection. The animal model minimized the overestimation of genetic parameters and improved the accuracy of the BV, thus enabling the breeder to select the suitable breeding strategy for genetic improvement.

Interspecific associations between two mosquito species can lead to effects such as competition, species displacement, and species stability. To better understand Aedes albopictus (Skuse) and other Aedes species, we monitored eggs in artificial oviposition cups (ovitraps) within Knox County, TN, U.S.A., during the 2016 and 2017 mosquito seasons. In 2016, one black and one white ovitrap were placed at 18 sites for 21 weeks, while in 2017 black and white ovitraps baited with grass-infused or deionized water were placed at 11 sites for nine weeks. Eggs were identified to species and resulting counts were used to determine the degree of interspecific association using Cole's coefficients (C7 ) and the degree of heterogeneity across space and time using generalized linear mixed models (GLMM). Here, Aedes mosquitoes are generally ovipositing in black cups with grass-infused water, and Ae. albopictus eggs co-occurred with other Aedes species more often than would be expected. Finding a positive significant interspecific association between Ae. albopictus and other Aedes eggs suggests that methods used to control Ae. albopictus may also control other Aedes mosquitoes. Finding that Ae. albopictus co-occurs with other Aedes mosquitoes warrants additional research to evaluate outcomes associated with co-occurrence within the study area.

We describe the discovery of Polyergus bicolor, an obligate slave-making ant species, as a new provincial record in Alberta. This species was previously known mostly from eastern Canada and the northeastern United States and has been sparsely collected: only once in the past 50 years. Polyergus bicolor was discovered parasitizing Formica podzolica, which is also a new host for the species. This discovery marks a significant expansion of both range and host for P. bicolor.

In the present study, a total of 100 catla (Catla catla-major South Asian carp, local name botcha) collected from local fish markets and aquaculture ponds were subjected for isolation and characterization of Arcobacter sp. In all, 21 Arcobacter sp. were isolated, of which 18 (85·7%) were Arcobacter butzleri and three (14%) were A. cryoaerophilus as identified by multiplex PCR. All 18 A. butzleri isolates were positive for mviN, ciaB and tlyA virulence genes, three of A. cryoaerophilus isolates carried mviN gene and none of the isolates were positive for cadF, irgA, cj1349, hecA and hecB genes. All isolates (n = 21) were resistant to penicillin (100%). Meanwhile, 71·43, 23·81, 23·81, 14·29 and 9·52% of the isolates showed resistance towards vancomycin, nalidixic acid, erythromycin, cefixime and kanamycin, respectively. Multidrug resistance was observed in 23·81% of the Arcobacter sp. isolates and none of the isolates were positive for any of the extended spectrum beta-lactamases either by phenotypic or by molecular identification genes (blaOXA , blaSHV , blaTEM , blaCTX-M1 , blaCTX-M2 and blaCTX-M9 groups). The results emphasize the need to implement specific control procedures to reduce the use of antibiotics in aquaculture particularly the ones which are very important in human medicine. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Arcobacter species are emerging food- and water-borne human pathogens. In this study, Arcobacter butzleri was predominant in fish compared to A. cryoaerohilus and A. skirrowii. Higher incidence of arcobacters in fish market samples suggests cross contamination and unhygienic handling of fish in markets. Virulence genes profile and antibiotics resistance of the Arcobacter sp. isolated in current study indicate pathogenic potential of Arcobacter sp. to humans. Occurrence of multidrug-resistant Arcobacter sp. in fish is a major concern in food safety. To our knowledge, this is the first report of Arcobacter sp. from freshwater fish, catla (Catla catla) in India.

Background: Many researchers have studied the morphology of coronoid process and have found varying shapes but such a study is lacking in this area. Aims: The present study was conducted to identify different morphological variations in shape of coronoid process of adult human mandible. Materials and Methods: The present cross-sectional study was conducted in the department of Anatomy at a Medical College of Bihar upon 46 dry adult human mandibles i.e. 92 coronoid processes. The morphological forms of coronoid process were noted. Results: 57.6% of coronoid processes were triangular in shape, 28.3% were rounded and 14.1% were hook shaped. The difference between male and female mandibles was found to be statistically significant (p=0.004). The proper knowledge on the morphological shapes of coronoid process is useful for maxillofacial surgeons as well as to be used as an anthropological marker to assess different populations and races. Pilchard orthomyxovirus (POMV) is a virus of concern to the Atlantic salmon aquaculture industry in Tasmania. First isolated from wild pilchards in southern Australia in 1998, the virus is now a recognised pathogen of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in Tasmania. While the current real-time PCR for POMV targets segment 5 of the viral genome, recent viral gene expression data suggests that other segments of the POMV genome presented higher transcription levels and thus may be better candidates for the early detection of the virus. This study aimed to design and begin validating a more sensitive reverse transcriptase real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) assay to detect POMV. Primers and probes were developed targeting two independent viral genes derived from segments 7 and 8, which presented higher transcription levels than segment 5 in both cell culture and infected fish. These were compared with the current POMV RT-qPCR. The POMV segment 8 assay had a higher analytical sensitivity than segment 7, detecting at least 1 plasmid copy μl−1, and was 10-fold more sensitive than both POMV segment 7 and 5 assays when analysing nucleic acid from a positive field sample. Both new assays also had high analytical specificity, detecting the 11 POMV isolates tested (inclusivity testing) and not amplifying nucleic acids from other viruses, including ISAV, a related orthomyxovirus. In the latent class model analysis, the diagnostic sensitivity of the segment 8 and 7 assays were higher than segment 5 in 93% and 92% of simulations, respectively. Seven samples (18.4%), all from subclinical fish infected with POMV, returned a positive result only with the segment 8 assay. Both new assays showed reproducible results when applied to aliquots of the same samples tested in three different laboratories. BACKGROUNDDiffuse midline gliomas remain incurable, with consistently poor outcomes in children despite radiotherapy. Immunotherapeutic approaches hold promise, with the integration of the host’s immune system fundamental to their design. Here, we describe a new, genetically engineered immunocompetent model that incorporates interleukin 13 receptor alpha 2 (IL13Rα2), a tumor-associated antigen, which is suitable for further evaluation of the antitumor activity of IL13Rα2-targeted immunotherapeutics in preclinical studies.METHODSThe RCAS-Tv-a delivery system was used to induce gliomagenesis through overexpression of PDGFB and p53 deletion with and without human IL13Rα2 in Nestin-Tva; p53fl/fl mice. Hindbrain or cerebral cortex nestin progenitors of neonatal pups were infected with Cre recombinase and PDGFB+IL13Rα2 or Cre recombinase and PDGFB to model diffuse midline glioma and supratentorial high-grade glioma, respectively. Immunoblotting and flow cytometry was used to confirm target expression. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were established to compare tumor latency in both models. Tumor tissue was analyzed through immunohistochemistry and H&E staining. Cell lines generated from tumor-bearing mice were used for in vitro studies and orthotopic injections.RESULTSThe protein expression of PDGFB and IL13Rα2 was confirmed by flow cytometry and western blot. In both groups, de novo tumors developed without significant difference in median survival between PDGFB and p53 loss (n=25, 40 days) and PDGFB, IL13Rα2, and p53 loss (n=33, 38 days, p=0.62). Tumors demonstrated characteristics of high-grade glioma such as infiltration, palisading necrosis, microvascular proliferation, high Ki-67 index, heterogeneous IL13Rα2 expression, and CD11b+ macrophages, along with a low proportion of CD3+ T cells. Orthotopic tumors developed from cell lines retained histopathological characteristics of de novo tumors. Mice orthotopically implanted with cells in the hindbrain or right cortex showed a median survival of 42 days and 41 (p=0.56) days, respectively.CONCLUSIONGeneration of de novo tumors using the RCAS-Tv-a delivery system was successful, with tumors possessing histopathologic features common to pediatric diffuse gliomas. The development of these models opens the opportunity for preclinical assessment of IL13Rα2-directed immunotherapies with the potential for clinical translation.

A new bread wheat variety HI 1633 (Pusa Vani) has been released and notified by the Central Sub-Committee on Crop Standards, Notification and Release of Varieties for Agricultural Crops, Government of India for commercial cultivation under irrigated and late sown conditions of Peninsular Zone of India. HI 1633 has average yield of 41.7 q ha-1 and showed superiority over checks. The potential yield of HI 1633 is 65.8 q ha-1 and found resistant to black and brown rusts. HI 1633 found to have excellent chapati quality (7.63), biscuit quality (7.08), high grain hardness (>80.0), test weight (80.3 kg hl-1) and sedimentation value (45.0 ml). It has high protein content (12.4 %) and presence of 5+10 subunit of Glu-D1 reflecting higher gluten strength. It has good amount of micronutrients viz., iron (41.6 ppm) and zinc (41.1 ppm) content making it rich in nutritional qualities. This variety has been recommended for irrigated late sown conditions and would contribute to increasing wheat production and alleviate the socio-economic status of farmers of Peninsular zone in India.

Though Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a well-studied plant pathogen that causes significant economic damage worldwide, sustainable and environmental friendly control methods are difficult to establish due to it wide host range, cosmopolitan distribution and production of recalcitrant structures that can survive in soil for a long time. The pathogen was found causing a severe disease incidence on cabbage in 2016 in Sri Lanka. It was hypothesized that a) isolates of the recent disease outbreak display cross resistance to commonly applied fungicides and b) carbon (C) source supplemented Anaerobic Soil Disinfestation (ASD) is effective in mitigating the germination of sclerotia. In vitro fungicide sensitivity assays showed large variation in mycelial growth inhibition indicating high adaptability of the population towards environmental fluctuations and management practices. Signatures of cross resistance were evident. ASD was carried out using cabbage (Brassica oleracea) and leek (Allium ampeloprasum) cull piles, durian () peels and grass cuttings (Axonopus compressus) as C sources and determined the sclerotial viability. Cabbage and leek cull piles at rates of 60–100 mg/g soil completely inhibited sclerotial germination. Maintaining anaerobic condition along with C source amendments was found to be a critical step in mitigating the sclerotial germination. GC-MS analysis of the volatiles of cabbage leaves, leeks and durian further confirmed the presence of various bioactive compounds with potential antifungal activity. Therefore, in addition to elevated microbial activity in treatments, the volatiles of C sources may have helped mitigating sclerotial germination.

The data on 837 birds representing five crosses (Aseel x PD-1, Aseel x PD-2, Aseel x PD-6, Aseel x PB-1 and Aseel x PB-2) survived up to 12 weeks of age were evaluated for various growth, meat quality, meat composition, sensory attributes and carcass traits as an alternative to native chicken farming. Body weights and shank lengths significantly (P≤0.05) differed at all ages. Aseel crosses with coloured broiler lines (PB-1 and PB-2) had significantly (P≤0.05) higher body weights while Aseel x PD-1 cross recorded higher shank length at all ages. The fat and ash proportion varied significantly (P≤0.05) among the crosses. The pH values of the breast meat ranged 5.89 to 6.29. The Shear force values (SFV) and Hydroxyproline (HP) concentration differed significantly (P≤0.05) among the crosses. Meat colour differed significantly (P≤0.05) with respect to yellowness (b*) and red (a*) colouration. The proportion of legs, wings, back, neck, meat and bone significantly (P≤0.05) differed among the crosses. The cluster analysis of means of all traits revealed that least distance exists between Aseel x PD-1 and Aseel x PD-6. The study concludes that, Aseel x PD-1 and Aseel x PD-6 crosses may be a viable and suitable alternative for native chicken farming.
