The potentially major importance but currently unstudied trend of enteric bacterial contamination on surfaces of canned drinks forms the basis of the research. A study was carried out to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of selected enteric bacteria on the surface of canned soft drinks and its handlers (palms of consumers) from selected tertiary institutions in Zaria. Two hundred and sixteen swabs were collected from the external surfaces of canned soft drinks and its handlers, thirty-six swabs each from cans and hand swabs were also collected from designated whole sellers known as Distributors. The samples were screened and analyzed using Spread Plate Method, Microgen GNA System for identification for enteric bacteria in three institutions in Zaria, Kaduna State. Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method was employed for antimicrobial susceptibility test. The results showed that the total bacteria count of canned soft drinks and its handlers in the three institutions range from 1.0x104 to 3.0x107 cfu/ml. Fourteen species of the Family Enterobacteriaceae were identified. The predominant species observed on canned soft drinks were Citrobacter freundii and Klebsiella ozaenae while that of its handlers were Citrobacter freundii and Escherichia coli. Perfloxacin (66.7%) in ABU, perfloxacin (66.7%) in FCE and ciprofloxacin (88.9%) in POLY were highly sensitive against the isolates, while imipenem and ampicillin had (57.6%) in ABU, ofloxacin (73.3%) in FCE and Amoxicillin-Clavulanic (66.7%) in POLY were found to be non-susceptible. The study showed that surfaces of canned soft drinks and its handlers in Zaria are significantly contaminated with enteric bacteria. Hence, incorporation of routine check of canned drinks in the health system is required. There is low antimicrobial activity by the antibiotic against the isolates, this poses serious health implications and requires further investigation.

Ce travail passe en revue les résultats des travaux de recherches sur l’amélioration génétique des zébus locaux (Goudali, White et Red Fulani) par voie de sélection et de croisement avec les races exotiques (Holstein, Montbéliarde, Brahman américain, Jersiais, Tarentaise, Limousine et Charolaise). Ces travaux ont été conduits depuis 1952 dans les Centres de Recherches Zootechniques de Wakwa et Bambui par l’Institut de Recherches Zootechniques (IRZ, aujourd’hui connue sous le nom de l’Institut de Recherche Agricole pour le Développement) du Cameroun, en système d’élevage semi-intensif dans les zones des hautes savanes guinéennes et des hauts plateaux de l’Ouest Cameroun. Les données proviennent des rapports d’activité et de consultations, des publications scientifiques et des entrevues. L’objectif est de ressortir les résultats saillants utiles pour les décideurs politiques, les chercheurs et les éleveurs. Les principaux résultats montrent que le potentiel laitier des croisés est généralement supérieur (>4 litres) à celui des races locales (>3,5 litres). Les génotypes ayant moins de 75% de sang exotique sont les plus performants en lait et viande. Les causes de mortalité par ordre d’importance sont nutritionnelles (36,8%), accidentelles (29,6%), pathologiques (21,1%), parasitaires (7,7%) et reproductives (4,8%). Par rapport aux autres produits de croisement, les croisés Holsteins ont été plus lourds à la naissance (34,75 kg) avec une vitesse de croissance plus élevée (0,46 kg), une production laitière plus élevée (5,47 ± 0,17 litres), plus précoces (40,87 mois) et moins susceptibles au stress Nuenvironnemental. Pour la filière bovin-à-viande, les performances de viande de la race synthétique Wakwa sont légèrement supérieures à celles des zébus Goudali sélectionnés dans le cheptel local. Cependant, le taux de susceptibilité à la dermatophilose est estimé à 71,0%, 34,4% et 5,0% chez le pur, ½ et ¼ sang Brahman, respectivement. La sélection massale du zébu Goudali (variété Ngaoundéré) et la race synthétique Wakwa a permis d’obtenir des progrès génétiques significatifs, soient, respectivement, 8,60 kg et 20,40 kg. Cependant, les corrélations génétiques négatives entre les effets directs et maternels montrent que le progrès génétique serait davantage plus important si la sélection était concentrée sur les performances directes et maternelles. Les expériences d’insémination artificielle menées à la SODEPA et à « Tadu Dairy Cooperative Society»montrent que l’industrie laitière est une entreprise rentable avec un rapport bénéfice-coût de 4,21. This work reviews the results of research on the genetic improvement of local zebus (Gudali, White and Red Fulani) through selection and crossbreeding with exotic cattle breeds (Holstein, Montbeliard, American Brahman, Jersey, Tarentaise, Limousine and Charolais). This work was started since 1952 by Institute of Animal Research (IRZ, now known as the Institute of Agricultural Research for Development) at the Wakwa and Bambui Research Centers, under semi-intensive management conditions in the high Guinea savannah areas of the Adamawa Plateau and the highlands of West Cameroon. Data were obtained from activity and consultation reports, scientific publications and interviews. The objective is to highlight salient findings that are useful for policy makers, researchers and livestock producers. The main results show that the milk potential of crosses is generally higher (>4 liters) than that of local breeds (>3.5 liters). Genotypes with less than 75% exotic blood had the best milk and meat production performance. The reported causes of mortality in order of importance are nutritional (36.8%), accidental (29.6%), pathological (21.1%), parasitic (7.7%) and reproductive (4.8%). Compared to the others crosses, Holstein crosses were found to be relatively heavier at birth (34.75 kg) with a higher growth rate (0.46 kg), higher daily milk production (5.47 ± 0.17 liters), earlier maturing (40.87 months), but more adapted to the breeding conditions and less susceptible to environmental stress. For the beef industry, the meat performance of the synthetic Wakwa breed is slightly better than that of the Gudali zebus selected from the local herd. However, the susceptibility rate to dermatophilosis was estimated at 71.0%, 34.4% and 5.0% in pure, ½ and ¼ blood Brahman, respectively. Individual selection of the Gudali zebu (Ngaoundéré subtype) and the synthetic Wakwa breed has resulted in significant genetic progress, 8.60 kg and 20.40 kg, respectively. However, the negative genetic correlations between direct and maternal effects showed that genetic progress would be more important if selection was concentrated on direct and maternal performance. Artificial insemination experiments conducted at SODEPA and Tadu Dairy Cooperative Society showed that the dairy industry is a profitable enterprise with a benefit-cost ratio of 4.21.

Background: Typhoid fever is a major health burden in Sub-Saharan Africa. Conventional anti-typhoid drugs are becoming more and more unavailable to most patients in Africa due to the increased costs and emerging drug resistance. Therefore, there is a need for the discovery of new antimicrobial agents to combat typhoid fever. Objective: This work aimed to investigate the bioactive components in Cyperus sphacelatus Rottb. (Cyperaceae) and test the antisalmonellal activity of the isolated compounds. Methods: Compound purification was done through column chromatography. Structure elucidation was accomplished based on the 1D and 2D NMR, IR and mass spectra. The biological assay was done using five bacterial strains, including Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica sérovars Typhi ATCC 6539 (STS), S. enterica subsp. enterica sérovars Typhi (ST), S. enteritidis (STE), S. enterica subsp. enterica sérovars Typhimurim (STM), and a resistant isolate of S. enterica subsp. enterica sérovars Typhi (ST566). Results: Three natural products were isolated from the methylene chloride extract of the rhizomes of C. sphacelatus, including a new furanoquinone, scabequinon-6(14)-ene (1) and two known compounds, cyperotundone (2) and vanillin (3). Compound 1 showed moderate antisalmonellal activity, with a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 32 μg/mL against STM and STS. The best inhibitory result was obtained with compound 2 on STM with a MIC of 8 μg/mL. Compound 2 also gave the best minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 32 μg/mL on the STM strain. Conclusion: The discovery of the three antisalmonellal compounds from C. sphacelatus supports the addition of this plant to typhoid fever preparations.

Background: Female sexual disorder is rarely considered, even thou females experience sexual dysfunction more than males. Aim: Hence, this work was aimed at evaluating the effect of Citrullus lanatus ethanolic rind extract (CERE) on structures of hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, hormones and sexual behaviour of adult female Wistar rats. Methods: Female Wistar rats of 10 weeks’ old were randomized into 4 groups (n=7). Groups I-III received oral saline (1 mL/kg), CERE (500 and 1000 mg/kg) daily for 14 days. Group VI received weekly hormonal treatment. Thereafter sexual behavioural test with sexually experienced male rats in unilevel pacing chamber was conducted. Female sexual behavioural parameters were scored. Blood was collected for hormonal assay. Summary The use of wolbachia-infected mosquitoes to stop the spread of zika virus disease is modeled and analyzed. The model consists of a system of 10 ordinary differential equations which describes the dynamics of the disease in the human population, a wolbachia-free Aedes aegypti population, and a wolbachia-infected Aedes aegypti population used for disease control. A stability analysis of the disease-free equilibrium is conducted, which shows that it is both locally and globally asymptotically stable when the reproduction number is less than one. The result of the stability analysis shows that the spread of zika virus disease can be stopped, irrespective of the initial sizes of the infected human and mosquito populations, when wolbachia-infected Aedes aegypti are introduced in the area where the disease is endemic.

This study focuses on testing the efficacy of herbal remedy used in many homes within the South-Eastern part of Nigeria to treat malaria and also the histopathological effect of the remedy on albino rats. Twenty rats were procured and distributed with five rats to one group. Group 1 received Garcinia kola and Aloe vera extracts, Group 2 received only G. kola extract, Group 3 is negative control and Group 4 is positive control. The treatment lasted for 21 days but parameters were monitored on day zero, second, third, fourth and 21st day. There was a sharp weight reduction of the albino rats at the third day, Group 1 recorded 107.21±15.46 as compared to the initial weight which was 116.18±14.94, but later increased at day 21. The application of zinc to some selected legumes (cowpea - Vignaunguiculata L. Walp., soybean – Glycine max L. Merr. or mungbean - Vigna radiate L. Wilczek) intercropped with upland rice (OryzaesativaL.) may improve the presence of residual nitrogen in the cropping system andprotein in-take of farmers faced with protein and mineral deficiency, especially zinc in their daily food menu. Information on the effect of zinc on legumes and rice is inadequate. The study investigated zinc rate effectsonshoot zinc status, grain yieldand productivity of the crop species in sole and intercrop with upland rice. There were three separate trials laid out in a randomised complete block design with three replications. Zinc rate (0, 2, 4 and 6 Kg•ha-1) were applied to the sole and intercrop in the trials. Intercropping legumes with rice exhibited a high degree of complementarity. On average, 2 Kg Zn•ha-1 gave the highest total land equivalent ratio (LER 1.89) in soybean/rice, followed by 4 Kg Zn•ha-1 (LER 1.64) in mungbean/rice compared to other zinc rates.The application of 6 Kg Zn•ha-1 in cowpea/rice intercrop gave the highesttotal gross monetary and net returns (NR) but lowest benefit–cost ratio (BCR) compared to the other trials at the same Zn rate.In mungbean/rice intercrop,highest NR (₦263692:77•ha−1)and BCR(0.90) were exhibited at 4 Kg Zn•ha-1. The application of 4 or 6 Kg Zn•ha-1in intercropping to the selected legumespecies with upland rice enhanced productivity and financial returns in the systems.

Four different types of acacia gums were used in this research work. The four materials species are categorized as grades A, B, C, and D. The binders are popularly known as acacia gums. In most foundry operations, to achieve quality casting results, the experimental binders are varied until better results are obtained. Sixty-five (65) samples were produced and the physical and mechanical properties of the cores, the green, and dry compression strength N/cm2, gas permeability, mouldability index, shatter index, and moisture contents were determined. The experiments were fitted into the different core mixtures with acacia gum 15–17%, green sand ranging from 81 to 79%, and 4% water; acacia gum 5–7%, green sand ranging 84–82%, starch 7%, and water at 4% constant; acacia gum 5–7%, green sand ranging from 84 to 82%, bentonite 7%, and water 4%, and so on. Data generated from each of the experiments were used to plot different graphs. The produced samples were also dried in the drying oven with various temperature ranges of 60–180 °C. The experiments were carried out under very strict foundry practical conditions. Two inlet guides were produced with the grey cast iron and aluminium materials. The liquid metal for the grey cast iron was produced with the use of a one-tonne medium frequency induction furnace domicile in the foundry shop of the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited. A crucible furnace was used for the melting and casting of the aluminium inlet guides. Acacia gum has strong foundry properties for core productions; the results obtained from the research work validated the properties as explained. The combination of the conventional binders with the acacia gums gave good bonding possibilities; the acacia gums used alone also have a good bonding tendency. The findings obtained from the experiments revealed that the acacia gums could be used independently apart from other conventional binders for the production of cores for foundry operations.

A new anthraquinone, 1,6-dihydroxy-2-hydroxymethyl-5-methoxy-9,10-anthracenedione (1), along with four known compounds, including 1,2-dimethoxyanthraquinone (2), morindone-5-methylether (3), scopoletin (4), and fraxidin (5) were isolated from the methylene chloride extract of the stem bark of Morinda lucida Benth. Structure elucidation was accomplished by analysis of the 1D and 2D NMR, IR and mass spectra. Compounds 1, 2, 4 and 5 were tested against five Salmonella strains. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimal bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) were determined. The results indicated that the four compounds have different antibacterial activities, with MIC values ranging from 8 to 256 µg/mL. Among these four compounds, the best activity was observed for compound 4 against Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurim (STM), with a MIC value of 8 µg/mL. Compound 1 showed selective antibacterial activity toward the five Salmonella strains, with MICs of 16 µg/mL against STM, 32 µg/mL against S. enteritidis (STE), 64 µg/mL against S. enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhi (ST) and S. enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhi (ST566), and 128 µg/mL against S. enteritidis, S. enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhi ATCC 6539 (STS). Compounds 1, 2, 4, and 5 have bactericidal effects (MBC/MIC ≤ 4) against the tested Salmonella strains, except for compound 4, which is bacteriostatic to STM with a MBC/MIC value of 16.

Fermented food condiments are sources of proteins and vitamins and are added as spices or sauces to food for flavour or taste enhancers. The major fermenting microorganisms, Bacillus species, produce proteolytic enzymes that hydrolyze proteins and amino acids and peptides. Methionine is the most essential amino acid for chicken feeds and can be produced by Bacillus species. The screening of methionine-producing microorganisms from Nigerian fermented food condiments and the effect of some cultural parameters on methionine accumulation were conducted. Bacterial organisms isolated from fermented food condiments, ogiri and okpeye, were screened for methionine producers on minimal solid agar medium seeded with auxotrophic Escherichia coli and in submerged medium. The effects of medium to fermenter volume ratio, inoculum size, carbon and nitrogen sources on methionine accumulation by the isolates were investigated. Of the five methionine producers recovered, two of the active isolates identified as Bacillus pumilus and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens were used for methionine production. A 20.0ml fermentation medium and 5.0% inoculum size gave the highest methionine accumulation by the Bacillus species. At 8.0% glucose and 4.0% ammonium sulphate concentrations, methionine yields of 5.22mg/ml and 5.50mg/ml were accumulated in the broth cultures of B. pumilus and B. amyloliquefaciens respectively. B. pumilus and B. amyloliquefaciens recovered from Nigerian fermented food condiments were observed to produce methionine and the optimization of some cultural parameters enhanced methionine accumulation by the Bacillus species.

This work is aimed at formulating a mathematical model for the control of zika virus infection using Sterile Insect Technology (SIT). The model is extended to incorporate optimal control strategy by introducing three control measures. The optimal control is aimed at minimizing the number of Exposed human, Infected human and the total number of Mosquitoes in a population and as such reducing contacts between mosquitoes and human, human to human and above all, eliminates the population of Mosquitoes. The Pontryagin’s maximum principle was used to obtain the necessary conditions, find the optimality system of our model and to obtain solution to the control problem. Numerical simulations result shows that; reduction in the number of Exposed human population, Infected human population and reduction in the entire population of Mosquito population is best achieved using the optimal control strategy.

Chemical investigation of the crude methanol/methylene chloride (1:1) extract of the seeds of Harungana madagascariensis resulted in the isolation of two known compounds namely n-dotriacontane and friedelan-3-one. The structures of the isolated compounds were determined on the basis of 1D NMR spectroscopy and comparison with literature data. The crude extract and the two compounds were evaluated for their anticonvulsant effects on pentylenetetrazole or picrotoxin induced convulsions in mice. All the tested treatments showed anticonvulsant effects on experimental models of epileptic seizures chemically induced in mice. Friedelan-3-one and the crude extract showed up to 83% protection of animals against convulsions while n-dotriacontane produced a maximum of 33% protection. Introduction: Terminalia species have the potential to be exploited in phytomedicine based on their several pharmacological properties including antiplasmodial activity. However, there is need for more data on their antiplasmodial activity and toxicity. This study evaluated the antiplasmodial activities of Terminalia catappa and Terminalia superba found in the coastal area of Cameroon on resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum not previously tested, and their toxicity. Methods: Three leaf extracts of each plant prepared separately using three organic solvents were screened in vitro on 3 strains of P. falciparum: chloroquine-sensitive 3D7, chloroquine-resistant Dd2 and multi-drug resistant W2mef using the parasite growth inhibition assay. Antiplasmodial activity was assessed using fluorescence microscopy and the parasite lactate dehydrogenase assay. Cytotoxicity of active extracts was assessed on LLC-MK2 monkey kidney epithelial cells and acute toxicity including effect on some liver enzymes in BALB/c mice. Results: The methanol extracts of both plants showed the highest antiplasmodial activity (IC50 between 5.03-9.76 μg/mL) on the three parasite strains. The methanol extracts showed high selectivity for parasites with selectivity index values ranging from 40 to 80 indicating very low risk of toxicity. There was no mortality or adverse effect and no significant effect on the liver enzymes, alanine aminotransferase (P = 0.506) and aspartate aminotransferase (P = 0.243). Conclusion: The antiplasmodial activity, high selectivity and no adverse effects for T. catappa and T. superba demonstrate the potential for use of these plants in traditional treatment of malaria, further development into a phytomedicine against malaria and as source of new antimalarial lead.

An essential mission of the Schistosomiasis Consortium for Operational Research and Evaluation (SCORE) was to help inform global health practices related to the control and elimination of schistosomiasis. To provide more accurate, evidence-based projections of the most likely impact of different control interventions, whether implemented alone or in combination, SCORE supported mathematical modeling teams to provide simulations of community-level Schistosoma infection outcomes in the setting of real or hypothetical programs implementing multiyear mass drug administration (MDA) for parasite control. These models were calibrated using SCORE experience with Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium gaining and sustaining control studies, and with data from comparable programs that used community-based or school-based praziquantel MDA in other parts of sub-Saharan Africa. From 2010 to 2019, models were developed and refined, first to project the likely SCORE control outcomes, and later to more accurately reflect impact of MDA across different transmission settings, including the role of snail ecology and the impact of seasonal rainfall on snail abundance. Starting in 2014, SCORE modeling projections were also compared with the models of colleagues in the Neglected Tropical Diseases Modelling Consortium. To explore further possible improvement to program-based control, later simulations examined the cost-effectiveness of combining MDA with environmental snail control, and the utility of early impact assessment to more quickly identify persistent hot spots of transmission. This article provides a nontechnical summary of the 11 SCORE-related modeling projects and provides links to the original open-access articles describing model development and projections relevant to schistosomiasis control policy.

In this work we report the isolation, identification and antibacterial activity of two anthraquinones, 2-hydroxy-1-methoxyanthraquinone (1) and 2,5-dihydroxy-1-methoxy-6-methoxymethylanthraquinone (2), from the stem bark of Morinda lucida. These two natural products were selectively converted into two new glycosylated derivatives, 2-hydroxy-1-methoxyanthraquinone-4′-O-methyl-2-O-β- d -glucopyranoside (3) and 2,5-dihydroxy-1-methoxy-6-methoxymethylanthraquinone-4′-O-methyl-2-O-β- d -glucopyranoside (4) by the filamentous fungus Beauveria bassiana ATCC 7159. Structure elucidation was accomplished based on the 1D and 2D NMR, IR and mass spectra. The glycosylated compounds 3 and 4 showed higher in vitro antibacterial activity against Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovars Typhimurim (MIC of 8 μg/mL each) than the corresponding aglycons 1 and 2 (MIC of 16 μg/mL and 32 μg/mL, respectively). These results indicated that microbial glycosylation is an effective approach to modify natural products for enhanced biological activities.

With legumes, symbiotic N(2) fixation can meet the species N demand and reduce the over-reliance on chemical fertilizers in tropical regions where N deficiency is a major factor limiting crop yields and increased agricultural sustainability. Therefore, to optimize the use of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp) germplasm in effective breeding, evaluation of genetic diversity and quantification of N(2) fixation are essential prerequisites. The aim of this study was to explore the level of diversity using SSR markers and N(2)-fixing traits in a set of cowpea germplasm grown in Ghana. We analysed 49 cowpea accessions collected from Northern Ghana using qualitative vegetative and N(2) fixation traits, and simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. Experimental field results revealed considerable morpho-physiological variation for plant growth habits, grain yield and symbiotic performance between and among the cowpea accessions. Results from both the (15)N natural abundance and ureides in the xylem sap were able to descriminate between high and low levels of N(2) fixation in cowpea accessions. Five subpopulations were identified within accessions inferred from STRUCTURE 2.3.4. A general linear model was used to assess the association of SSR markers with N(2)–fixing traits. There were significant (p ≤ 0.05) links between SSR markers and symbiosis-related traits such as nodule number, nodule dry weight, shoot dry weight, N-fixed, N derived from air (Ndfa), and relative uried-N (RU-N). Here, we report on the symbiotic N2 fixation and water use efficiency (δ13C) of Kersting's groundnut, an important but underutilized grain legume in Africa, in response to inoculation with Bradyrhizobium strains 3267 and CB756. The 15N natural abundance and xylem ureide techniques were used to quantify N2 fixation. The landraces in this study derived variable levels of their N requirements from symbiosis, which translated into marked differences in the amounts of N-fixed by the landrace–inoculant combinations across the test locations. In most instances, the landrace-strain combinations that elicited higher shoot biomass also recorded greater N-fixed and/or ureide-N in xylem sap as well as grain yield. Although some landraces coupled increased grain yield with higher water use efficiency (shoot δ13C), a trait that could be tapped for crop improvement, others recorded lower yields despite eliciting relatively high shoot δ13C values, indicating genotypic variations in adaptation to the different environments. Grain yield of the test landraces showed marked variation and ranged from 131 to 1349.8 kg ha−1 depending on the landrace–strain combination used and the planting location. The high symbiotic dependence by landraces in this study could explain why Kersting's groundnut thrives in the low nutrient soils that are prevalent in its cultivation areas. These results provide more insights into the literature regarding the Kersting's groundnut–rhizobia symbiosis as well as the crop's water use efficiency.

Apoptotic cell death is a cell-intrinsic, immune tolerance mechanism that regulates the magnitude and resolution of T cell-mediated responses. Evasion of apoptosis is critical for the generation of memory T cells, as well as autoimmune T cells, and knowledge of the mechanisms that enable resistance to apoptosis will provide insight into ways to modulate their activity during protective and pathogenic responses. IL-17-producing CD4 T cells (TH17s) are long-lived, memory cells. These features enable their role in host defense, chronic inflammatory disorders, and anti-tumor immunity. A growing number of reports now indicate that TH17s in vivo require mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), a metabolic phenotype that is poorly induced in vitro. To elucidate the role of OXPHOS in TH17 processes, we developed a system to polarize TH17s that metabolically resembled their in vivo counterparts. We discovered that directing TH17s to use OXPHOS promotes mitochondrial fitness, glutamine anaplerosis, and an anti-apoptotic phenotype marked by high BCL-XL and low BIM. Through competitive co-transfer experiments and tumor studies, we further revealed how OXPHOS protects TH17s from cell death while enhancing their persistence in the periphery and tumor microenvironment. Together, our work demonstrates a non-classical role of metabolism in regulating TH17 cell fate and highlights the potential for therapies that target OXPHOS in TH17-driven diseases.

The need for replacement of highly priced soybean meal (SM) in fish diets with unconventional plant materials has become imperative for the sustainability of aquaculture production. This study addressed the effect of replacing SM with discarded cashew nut meal (DCNM) on the liver and stomach histology in African catfish (Clarias gariepinus). Total 90 juveniles (24.83 ± 1.52 g) were fed DCNM based diets, inclusion level of 0, 50% and 100%. Fish were fed twice daily (8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.) at 5% body weight for 56 days. The histology of liver and the stomach were assessed. Histo-morphological changes of the liver tissue were moderate at 100% DCNM fed fish compared to 50% DCNM and control (0 DCNM). Photomicrograph of stomach of 50% DCNM fed fish showed normal histo-morphological features, while moderate to severe histological distortions were observed in the stomach of 100% DCNM fed fish. The findings of the present study showed that partial (50%) replacement of SM with DCNM had no adverse nutritional consequence while total (100%) replacement of SM with DCNM in the diet of C. gariepinus resulted to moderate histological distortions of the liver and stomach. The bathroom which is a place for people to clean up themselves is also prone to contamination. The aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial properties of nutmeg against isolates from the bathroom using different solvents such as acetone, ethanol and water for the extraction of the nutmeg. In this study, samples from different areas in Veritas University male and female hostel bathrooms were screened for bacterial and fungal contamination and results from the study showed that bacterial genera such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus, Pseudomonas, and fungus Aspergillus were found in this public bathroom surfaces. The Cup-plate Agar Diffusion method was used to determine the antibacterial potency of the nutmeg while the Filter paper method was used to determine its antifungal properties. The results proved that nutmeg has great anti-microbial properties thus was capable of inhibiting the growth of these isolates. Results from this study also revealed that when acetone was used as the solvent at 75% concentration, it was the most effective for the antibacterial susceptibility test while ethanoic solvent at the same concentration was the most effective for the antifungal susceptibility testing.

Background: Malaria, a parasitosis affecting man, remains a public health problem in developing countries where morbidity and mortality are very high. Afzelia bipindensis and Senna siamea are two plants used in the treatment of malaria in different African countries including Cameroon. Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antiplasmodial activity of hydroethanolic leaves extracts of Afzelia bipindensis and Senna siamea, from Northern Cameron using Plasmodium berghei and to investigate the acute and sub-acute toxicity of leaves extracts in a rodent model. Methods: The four days Peter’s suppressive test was used to evaluate the antiplasmodial activity and the OCDE 423 and 412 guidelines were applied to evaluate acute and sub-acute toxicity. Biochemical tests related to hepatic, cardiac and renal toxicity were also assessed. Results: The leaves’ extracts of Afzelia bipindensis at doses 180, 360, 720 mg/kg and Senna siamea at doses of 100, 200, 400 mg/kg have shown significant antiplasmodial activity (P) with parasite reduction ≈ 50%. No mortality of rats was observed at the tested doses. The biochemical analysis did not reveal any statistically significant difference when compared with control. However, ALT was statistically increased at a higher dose (720 mg/kg) of Afzelia bipindensis leaves extract. On the other hand, there was a significant decrease in triglycerides at 360 mg/kg and 720 mg/kg Conclusion: It is concluded that daily consumption of leaves extract of Afzelia bipindensis and Senna siamea are without significant risks to human health, favoring the use of these products in the treatment of malaria.

The survey was conducted to assess use of improved catfish production technologies among fish farmers in Delta State, Nigeria. Data were collected from a sample of 50 different fish farmers in Delta State using questionnaire. Frequency, percentage and mean score were used in analyzing data for the study. Results indicated that majority (70.0%) of the respondents were male, 40.0% were between the ages of 25 and 34 years, 72.0% were married, 60.0% had a household size of 6-10 persons, 50.0% got an annual income of above ₦300,000 with 92.0% having formal education. Sources of funds for the respondents were personal savings (60.0%), friends/relations (20.0%), cooperative society (12.0%) and loans from banks (8.0%). Findings showed that improved catfish production technologies used by the respondents included fortification of cat fish feeds using root and tuber crops (M= 2.2), improved techniques in pond construction and maintenance (M= 1.7), non-conventional feed stuff for catfish (M= 1.6), fertilization and liming of catfish pond (M= 1.6), improving water quality in catfish culture (M= 1.3), prevention and control of catfish diseases (M=1.0), among others. Also, constraints to use of improved catfish production technologies were inadequate processing and storage facilities (M= 2.5), disease infestation (M= 2.3), high cost of feeds (M= 2.2), high cost of inputs (M= 2.1), inadequate funds (M= 2.1), poor market network (M= 2.0), etc. The study recommended that financial institutions should ensure timely availability of credit facilities to enable catfish farmers make provision for improved processing and storage facilities in order to boost their productivity.

The aim of this work was to formulate and evaluate the herbal tablets of Allium cepa L. for in vitro tablet properties, hypoglycemic effects and for their effects on some biochemical parameters in diabetic rats. Aqueous extract of A. cepa L. was obtained by cold maceration and freeze dried. A. cepa L. extract compatibility with some tablet excipients was assessed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. A. cepa L. tablets consisted of the extract, gelatin, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), Primogel®, Ac-Di-Sol®, Avicel® PH102, anhydrous lactose, talc and stearic acid. Tablets were prepared according to standard physical properties using wet granulation method. The tablets were evaluated for antidiabetic properties and for their effects on some biochemical parameters in alloxan induced diabetic rats with glibenclamide and distilled water as positive and negative controls respectively. The extract-excipient compatibility test indicated compatibility of the extract with gelatin, PVP, CMC, Primogel®, Ac-Di-Sol®, Avicel® PH102, and anhydrous lactose. The prepared tablets maintained adequate mechanical integrity and dissolution profiles after storage for six months. There was significant reduction in blood glucose level upon daily administration of the tablets compared to the negative control (p = 0.05). Maximum reduction of blood glucose levels ranging from 20 to 70% were achieved within 21 days of daily administration of the tablets. The plasma levels of liver enzymes such as alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase and alkaline phosphatase were significantly reduced together with total cholesterol and triglycerides. The effect of cooking methods on the proximate composition and sensory properties of beans pudding (moi-moi) was investigated. Two cooking methods were used; dry-heat and steam cooking method. Results for proximate analysis showed that beans pudding prepared using dry-heat cooking method had moisture content of 69.10% while the steamed method recorded 71.89% moisture. Results show that there was a significant (p 0.05) in the texture, sogginess, flavour and aroma of steamed and dry heat samples. Dry heat cooking method should be used for the preparation of beans pudding for nutritional retention, while steaming cooking method should be used to enhance the sensory properties of the food product.

The objectives of the study were to assess the inter-relationship between growth, yield, nutritional and anti-nutritional responses of thirteen tannia (Xanthosoma sagittifolium L.) accessions to planting date (May, June and July) in the humid tropics. Tannia corms and leaves are veritable sources of dietary fibre and starch, also essential minerals and vitamins; hence its value for security and as a cash crop for people in the humid tropics. A two-year 13-genotype × 3 planting date factorial arranged rain-fed field experiment in randomized complete block design with three replications was carried out during the 2014 and 2015 cropping seasons at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Nigeria. The results indicated that planting date and accession influenced growth and yield of tannia, an indication of differential responses of the thirteen accessions to the planting dates (May, June and July). The results suggest that May is the most appropriate planting date; accessions planted during this month had the highest yields. The interaction between planting date and tannia accession was significant for some traits (number of leaves per plant and cormel weight per plant) in both years and significant for plant height, pseudo-circumference and corm weight (2014); leaf area and tannia yield (2015). The correlation analysis showed good selection characters in plant height, pseudo-stem circumference, leaf area, number of leaves per plant, corm weight, corm circumference, cormel weight and cormel circumference for high yielding varieties, while nutritional analysis (crude protein, carbohydrate, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, tannin and oxalate) exhibited lower concentrations in processed corms relative to unprocessed. The corm yield of the tannia accessions ranged from 1.49 to 13.48 Mt.ha−1 in 2014 and 2.72 to 8.50 Mt.ha−1 in 2015 and best four accessions judged by interaction between tannia accession and date of planting was 13 (Ikaro) > 12 (Idoani) > 3 (Ehor) > 10 (Idasen) in May 2014 compared to accessions 6 (Ewu) >10 (Idasen) > 12 (Idoani) > 1 (Ikpoba) planted in June 2015. The differences in sequence suggest that both environment and genetic constitution contribute to Tannia yield.

Background Support groups for people living with HIV (PLWH) may improve HIV care adherence and outcomes. We assessed the impact of support group attendance on antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence and viral suppression in four African countries. Methods The ongoing African Cohort Study (AFRICOS) enrolls participants at 12 clinics in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Nigeria. Self-reported attendance of any support group meetings, self-reported ART adherence, and HIV RNA are assessed every 6 months. Logistic regression models with generalized estimating equations were used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for support group attendance and other factors potentially associated with ART adherence and viral suppression. Results From January 2013 to December 1, 2019, 1959 ART-experienced PLWH were enrolled and 320 (16.3%) reported any support group attendance prior to enrollment. Complete ART adherence, with no missed doses in the last 30 days, was reported by 87.8% while 92.4% had viral suppression Conclusion Support group attendance was not associated with significantly improved ART adherence or viral suppression, although low support group uptake may have limited our ability to detect a statistically significant impact.

This paper investigates the impact of the various parameters of the mathematical model for Hepatitis B virus-Hepatitis D virus (HBV-HDV) co-infection with controls (awareness, vaccine and therapy). It establishes that the model is biologically meaningful and epidemiologically well posed. Furthermore, simulations are carried out on the equations of the model using MATLAB and the results indicate that; when $c_1$(awareness) increase from $0.08$ to $0.70$, then the number of exposed HB individuals in the population will also increase. Conversely, we notice a drastic decrease in the number of exposed HBD individuals in the population when $c_1$(awareness) increase from $0.08$ to $0.70$. Again, we observe a decrease in the number of exposed treated individuals in the population when $c$(therapy) increase from $0.08$ to $0.50$. Similarly, we notice an increase in the number of recovered HBD individuals in the population upon the increase of $c$(therapy) from $0.08$ to $0.50$. We therefore conclude that awareness, vaccine and therapy are good measure which can be used to effectively control HBV-HDV co-infection in a population. However, awareness and vaccine are better control strategies than therapy. Hence, these simulation results provide the best framework for the control of the disease; Hepatitis B virus-Hepatitis D virus (HBV-HDV) co-infection in a population.

There are uncertainties about the global epidemiological data of infections due to Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV). We estimated the global case fatality rate (CFR) of CCHFV infections and the prevalence of CCHFV in humans, ticks and other animal species. We also explored the socio-demographic and clinical factors that influence these parameters. In this systematic review with meta–analyses we searched publications from database inception to 03rd February 2020 in Pubmed, Scopus, and Global Index Medicus. Studies included in this review provided cross-sectional data on the CFR and/or prevalence of one or more targets used for the detection of CCHFV. Two independent investigators selected studies to be included. Data extraction and risk of bias assessment were conducted independently by all authors. Data collected were analysed using a random effect meta-analysis. In all, 2345 records were found and a total of 312 articles (802 prevalence and/or CFR data) that met the inclusion criteria were retained. The overall CFR was 11.7% (95% CI = 9.1–14.5), 8.0% (95% CI = 1.0–18.9), and 4.7% (95% CI = 0.0–37.6) in humans with acute, recent, and past CCHFV infections respectively. The overall CCHFV acute infections prevalence was 22.5% (95% CI = 15.7–30.1) in humans, 2.1% (95% CI = 1.3–2.9) in ticks, and 4.5% (95% CI = 1.9–7.9) in other animal species. The overall CCHFV recent infections seroprevalence was 11.6% (95% CI = 7.9–16.4) in humans and 0.4% (95% CI = 0.0–2.9) in other animal species. The overall CCHFV past infections seroprevalence was 4.3% (95% CI = 3.3–5.4) in humans and 12.0% (95% CI = 9.9–14.3) in other animal species. CFR was higher in low-income countries, countries in the WHO African, South-East Asia and Eastern Mediterranean regions, in adult and ambulatory patients. CCHFV detection rate in humans were higher in CCHFV suspected cases, healthcare workers, adult and hospitalized patients, ticks of the genus Ornithodoros and Amblyomma and in animals of the orders Perissodactyla and Bucerotiformes. This review highlights a significant disease burden due to CCHFV with a strong disparity according to country income levels, geographic regions, various human categories and tick and other animal species. Preventive measures in the light of these findings are expected., Author summary Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever is one of the most severe zoonotic viral disease that occurs in humans. It is therefore necessary to provide public health stakeholders, research funding agencies and healthcare workers with accurate data on the burden of this disease in order to guide decision-making priorities. Our study is the first systematic review with meta-analysis to provide global data on CCHFV CFR in humans, CCHFV prevalence and seroprevalence in humans, ticks and other animal species. This review is also the first to maps CCHFV CRF, prevalence, and seroprevalence in humans, ticks and other animal species according to the country income level, geographic region, various human categories, and extensive tick and animal species. Broadly, the study showed elevated CFR in low-income countries, WHO regions of Africa, South-East Asia and Eastern Mediterranean, and adult and outpatient patients. In addition, the prevalence and seroprevalence of CCHFV were higher in CCHFV suspected cases, healthcare workers, adults and hospitalized patients, ticks of the genus Ornithodoros and Amblyomma, and animals of the orders Perissodactyla and Bucerotiformes. Finally, our findings show that more attention needs to be paid to low-income countries particularly in WHO regions of Africa, South-East Asia, and Eastern Mediterranean in order to prevent human deaths due to CCHFV. In particular low-income countries and adults should benefit from emergency measures aimed at improving the management of patients with CCHF and reducing exposure of humans and animals to ticks. This meta-analysis further shows that apart from the monitoring and control of CCHFV in humans, a special attention should also be given to role played by non-Hyalomma tick species and other animal species, both domestic and wild.

Studies assessing the immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody responses in severe malaria are not readily available. This study was designed to compare the IgG and IgG1-4 antibody responses in severe malaria and its major clinical presentations (cerebral malaria, severe malarial anemia and respiratory distress) in children (≤15 years) in Buea, Cameroon. In a hospital-based cross-sectional comparative study, children presenting for consultation at the outpatient department/Emergency unit of the Buea Regional Hospital were enrolled and assigned into one of three groups: severe malaria, uncomplicated malaria and negative controls. Baseline characteristics were determined; blood glucose level was measured by glucometer, complete blood count was performed using an automated heamatology analyser and participants were screened for malaria parasites by light microscopy and severe malaria was categorized based on WHO criteria. Total IgG and IgG1-4 antibodies were measured using standard ELISA with Plasmodium falciparum 19-KDa C-terminal region of merozoite surface protein 1 (P.fMSP-119) antigen as capture antigen. A total of 236 participants were enrolled comprising: 66 severe malaria, 70 uncomplicated malaria and 100 negative controls. Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a major public health problem affecting several countries with predominance in black Africa. Faced with therapeutic failure caused by resistance and supply disruptions, searching for other antiretroviral agents, in particular from natural sources, becomes necessary. Given popular consumption of Azadirachta indica and Senna siamea decoction in the Northern Cameroon region and the traditionally attributed antiretroviral value, information on its efficacy and safety consumption is relevant to confirm its use. A total of 297 participants aged 18–52 and HIV-positive were recruited and divided into 3 groups: one taking only the decoction (group 1), another taking only antiretroviral therapy (ARTs) (group 2), and finally, one taking the decoction and antiretroviral (group 3). During 6 months, all the participants of the concerned groups consumed daily (morning and evening) 250 mL of Azadirachta indica and Senna siamea decoction. CD4+ and CD8+ levels were measured by flow cytometry. Hepatic and renal toxicity and oxidative stress were evaluated spectrophotometrically by measuring ALT, AST, ALP, BUN, CREAT, SOD, CAT, and GSH parameters. We note an increase in the CD4+ level of the three groups with values much more pronounced in the group treated by ARTs + decoction, from 328 ± 106 to 752 ± 140. Group 2 presented not only biological signs of hepatic and renal toxicity but also significant oxidative stress. No signs of toxicity were detected in the other groups. The study concludes that a decoction of Azadirachta indica and Senna siamea stimulates the production of CD4+ and is not toxic. On the contrary, it would reduce the toxicity caused by ARTs intake.

A new iboga-vobasine-type isomeric bisindole alkaloid named voacamine A (1), along with eight known compounds&mdash, voacangine (2), voacristine (3), coronaridine (4), tabernanthine (5), iboxygaine (6), voacamine (7), voacorine (8) and conoduramine (9)&mdash, were isolated from the stem bark of Voacangaafricana. The structures of the compounds were determined by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses. Compounds 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8 were found to inhibit the motility of both the microfilariae (Mf) and adult male worms of Onchocerca ochengi, in a dose-dependent manner, but were only moderately active on the adult female worms upon biochemical assessment at 30 &mu, M drug concentrations. The IC50 values of the isolates are 2.49&ndash, 5.49 &micro, M for microfilariae and 3.45&ndash, 17.87 &micro, M for adult males. Homology modeling was used to generate a 3D model of the O. ochengi thioredoxin reductase target and docking simulation, followed by molecular dynamics and binding free energy calculations attempted to offer an explanation of the anti-onchocercal structure&ndash, activity relationship (SAR) of the isolated compounds. These alkaloids are new potential leads for the development of antifilarial drugs. The results of this study validate the traditional use of V. africana in the treatment of human onchocerciasis.

The detrimental effects of organophosphates (OPs) on human health are thought to be of systemic, i.e., irreversible inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) at nerve synapses. However, several studies have shown that AChE inhibition alone cannot explain all the toxicological manifestations in prolonged exposure to OPs. The present study aimed to assess the status of antioxidants malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH) (reduced), catalase, and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) in chronic OP-exposed groups from Cameroon and Pakistan. Molecular analysis of genetic polymorphisms (SNPs) of glutathione transferases (GSTM1, GSTP1, GSTT1), catalase gene (CAT, rs7943316), sirtuin 1 gene (SIRT1, rs10823108), acetylcholinesterase gene (ACHE, rs2571598), and butyrylcholinesterase gene (BCHE, rs3495) were screened in the OP-exposed individuals to find the possible causative association with oxidative stress and toxicity. Cholinesterase and antioxidant activities were measured by colorimetric methods using a spectrophotometer. Salting-out method was employed for DNA extraction from blood followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) for molecular analysis. Cholinergic enzymes were significantly decreased in OP-exposed groups. Catalase and SOD were decreased and MDA and FRAP were increased in OP-exposed groups compared to unexposed groups in both groups. GSH was decreased only in Pakistani OPs-exposed group. Molecular analysis of ACHE, BCHE, Catalase, GSTP1, and GSTM1 SNPs revealed a tentative association with their phenotypic expression that is level of antioxidant and cholinergic enzymes. The study concludes that chronic OPs exposure induces oxidative stress which is associated with the related SNP polymorphism. The toxicogenetics of understudied SNPs were examined for the first time to our understanding. The findings may lead to a newer area of investigation on OPs induced health issues and toxicogenetics.

This study evaluated the effects of fertilizer on growth, yield and the nutritive value of three varieties of huckleberry (“White stem”, “Bamenda” and “Foumbot”). The treatments were NPK (20:10:10) at levels 0, 100, 150, 200Kg/ha and 10 Mg/ha poultry manure and the experiment was a randomized complete block design with three replicates. The Kjeldahl procedure was used for crude protein determination. The lipid content was determined with the soxlet reflux heat extraction method. The ß-carotene content was determined using spectrophotometry. Results indicated that plants supplied with 200 Kg NPK/ha fertilizer treatment had the highest plant height (66 cm) and leaf number (242) in “White stem” and “Bamenda” varieties respectively and these were significantly different from the control (P = 0.05). Leaf area was highest in “Foumbot” variety (343.1 cm2). The longest tap root length and number of primary lateral roots were noted particularly in “White stem” control plants and this was significantly different (P = 0.05) from plants supplied with fertilizers. Plants supplied with 10 Mg/ha poultry manure recorded the highest total yield for “White stem” (44.83 Mg/ha) while plants supplied 200 Kg NPK/ha had maximum yield for the “Bamenda” and “Foumbot” varieties (36.96 and 31.84 Mg/ha respectively). The “White stem” variety had the highest crude protein (303.8 mg/100 g) and ß-carotene content (1.9 mg/100 g); “Bamenda” variety had the highest total lipid (8.15%), and crude fibre (14.15%) contents, while total ash was highest in “Foumbot” (16.54%). Appropriate fertilizer levels would considerably improve huckleberry yield as well as improve income of vegetable farmers.

Background A seasonal transmission environment including seasonal variation of snail population density and human-snail contact patterns can affect the dynamics of Schistosoma infection and the success of control interventions. In projecting control outcomes, conventional modeling approaches have often ignored seasonality by using simplified intermediate-host modeling, or by restricting seasonal effects through use of yearly averaging. Methods We used mathematical analysis and numerical simulation to estimate the impact of seasonality on disease dynamics and control outcomes, and to evaluate whether seasonal averaging or intermediate-host reduction can provide reliable predictions of control outcomes. We also examined whether seasonality could be used as leverage in creation of effective control strategies. Results We found models that used seasonal averaging could grossly overestimate infection burden and underestimate control outcomes in highly seasonal environments. We showed that proper intraseasonal timing of control measures could make marked improvement on the long-term burden reduction for Schistosoma transmission control, and we identified the optimal timing for each intervention. Seasonal snail control, implemented alone, was less effective than mass drug administration, but could provide additive impact in reaching control and elimination targets. Conclusions Seasonal variation makes Schistosoma transmission less sustainable and easier to control than predicted by earlier modeling studies.

Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs) are yet to be explored with the huge Nigerian plant biodiversity despite the bio-specificity and environmental friendly characteristics when compared to conventional chemicals. Safer, cheaper and reachable alternatives to the more popular insecticides that are hazardous to human health and the environment have become imperative. The study was designed to evaluate the effect of S-Hydroprene and various solvent leave extracts ofAzadirachta indicaon the metamorphosis ofCulex quinquefasciastusmosquitoes. Methanol, N-Hexane, Chloroform, Aqueous leave extracts ofAzadirachta indicaand S-Hydroprene were tested on 1stand 3rdthird instar larvae ofCx. Quinquefasciastusunder laboratory conditions for a consistent period of 6 - 15 days in which growth inhibition was monitored using the control to determine the rate of change for the concentrations 10 mg/L, 20 mg/L, 30 mg/L, 40 mg/L, 50 mg/L and 60 mg/L. S-Hydroprene had more deleterious effect onCx. quinquefasciatusthird instar larvae at 60 mg/L 2.8(9%) when compared with methanolic extract.N-Hexane extract killed more larvae at 60 mg/L 11.2(37%). Since extracts ofAz. indicahad less toxic effect, they allowed for the survival ofCx. Quinquefasciastusbut extended the larval stages and prevented ecdysis. The first instar larval stage was maintained for sixteen (16) days which is at variance with the regular three to four days larval existence. Leave extracts ofAz. Indicaand S-Hydroprene at concentration of 10 mg/L to 60 mg/L caused morphological deformations of the metamorphosis ofCulex quinquefasciastus. The leaf extracts ofAz. indicapossess explorable larvicidal properties for control of larva and adult mosquitoes.

The study investigated the level of access and utilization of traditional medicine for treatment of malaria among rural households in Abia State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study described socioeconomic characteristics of the respondents; ascertained the level of access to traditional medicine; ascertained the extent of utilization of traditional medicine and determined factors influencing access and utilization of traditional medicine in the study area. Data for the study were collected from (80) respondents using structured questionnaire and analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics (Tobit regression). The result showed that 55.0% of the respondents were males, average age of 58.45 years, 81.2% were married and 45.0% had secondary education. The study further revealed that respondents had high access to medicinal plants from market (mean = 2.35) and traditional medical practitioners (mean = 2.36). The respondents highly utilized traditional medicine with grand mean of 2.0. Tobit regression result showed that coefficient of age, years of education, income and farming experience influenced access to traditional medicine at 1% probability level. Coefficients of gender, age, occupation and income at 1%, 5%, 1% and 1% probability level respectively influenced utilization of traditional medicine in the study area. The study concluded that there was moderate access and high utilization of traditional medicine for treatment of malaria in the study area, and recommended ensuring appropriate information on traditional medicine for effective access and utilization.

INTRODUCTION Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarkers in cognitively normal (CN) and mild cognitive impaired (MCI) participants. However, independent and combined effects of OSA, amyloid beta (Aβ) and tau-accumulation on AD time-dependent progression risk is unclear. METHODS Study participants grouped by biomarker profile, as described by the A/T/N scheme, where "A" refers to aggregated Aβ, "T" aggregated tau, and "N" to neurodegeneration, included 258 CN (OSA-positive [OSA+] [A+TN+ n = 10, A+/TN- n = 6, A-/TN+ n = 10, A-/TN- n = 6 and OSA-negative [OSA-] [A+TN+ n = 84, A+/TN- n = 11, A-/TN+ n = 96, A-/TN- n = 36]) and 785 MCI (OSA+ [A+TN+ n = 35, A+/TN- n = 15, A-/TN+ n = 25, A-/TN- n = 16] and OSA- [A+TN+ n = 388, A+/TN- n = 28, A-/TN+ n = 164, A-/TN- n = 114]) older-adults from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative cohort. Cox proportional hazards regression models estimated the relative hazard of progression from CN-to-MCI and MCI-to-AD, among baseline OSA CN and MCI patients, respectively. Multi-level logistic mixed-effects models with random intercept and slope investigated the synergistic associations of self-reported OSA, Aβ, and tau burden with prospective cognitive decline. RESULTS Independent of TN-status (CN and MCI), OSA+/Aβ+ participants were approximately two to four times more likely to progress to MCI/AD (P < .001) and progressed 6 to 18 months earlier (P < .001), compared to other participants combined (ie, OSA+/Aβ-, OSA-/Aβ+, and OSA-/Aβ-). Notably, OSA+/Aβ- versus OSA-/Aβ- (CN and MCI) and OSA+/TN- versus OSA-/TN- (CN) participants showed no difference in the risk and time-to-MCI/AD progression. Mixed effects models demonstrated OSA synergism with Aβ (CN and MCI [β = 1.13, 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.74 to 1.52, and β = 1.18, 95%CI, 0.82 to 1.54]) respectively, and with tau (MCI [β = 1.31, 95% CI, 0.87 to 1.47]), P < .001 for all. DISCUSSION OSA acts in synergism with Aβ and with tau, and all three acting together result in synergistic neurodegenerative mechanisms especially as Aβ and tau accumulation becomes increasingly abnormal, thus leading to shorter progression time to MCI/AD in CN and MCI-OSA patients, respectively.

Mosquito-borne viruses are emerging or re-emerging globally, afflicting millions of people around the world. Aedes aegypti, the yellow fever mosquito, is the principal vector of dengue, Zika, and chikungunya viruses, and has well-established populations across tropical and subtropical urban areas of the Americas, including the southern United States. While intense arboviral epidemics have occurred in Mexico and further south in the Americas, local transmission in the United States has been minimal. Here, we study Ae. aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus host feeding patterns and vertebrate host communities in residential environments of South Texas to identify host-utilization relative to availability. Only 31% of Ae. aegypti blood meals were derived from humans, while 50% were from dogs and 19% from other wild and domestic animals. In Cx. quinquefasciatus, 67% of blood meals were derived from chicken, 22% came from dogs, 9% from various wild avian species, and 2% from other mammals including one human, one cat, and one pig. We developed a model for the reproductive number, R0, for Zika virus (ZIKV) in South Texas relative to northern Mexico using human disease data from Tamaulipas, Mexico. We show that ZIKV R0 in South Texas communities could be greater than one if the risk of human exposure to Ae. aegypti bites in these communities is at least 60% that of Northern Mexico communities. The high utilization of non-human vertebrates and low risk of human exposure in South Texas diminishes the outbreak potential for human-amplified urban arboviruses transmitted by Ae. aegypti.

Background. Despite public health significance of dual infections of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and malaria in developing countries like Nigeria, information on the association between malaria parasite density count (MPDC) and hematological parameter changes among HIV-infected individuals is rarely available. Objectives. To evaluate burden of HIV and malaria dual infections and assess the predictive association of MPDC with hematological parameter changes among HIV infected adults attending two antiretroviral treatment clinics in Kano, Nigeria. Methodology. This was a cross-sectional study consisting of 1521 consented participants randomly selected between June 2015 and May 2016. Participants’ basic characteristics and clinical details were collected using a pretested and validated standardized questionnaire. Collected venous blood was analyzed for malaria by rapid testing and microscopy including malaria parasite density; hematological parameters were estimated using a Sysmex XP-300 autoanalyzer. Data was reviewed, cleaned, and analyzed using SPSS software version 23.0. Mean hematological parameters and HIV/malaria status were compared using the independent t-test; hematological parameters and MPDC relationship was tested by simple linear regression analysis. Statistically significant difference at probability of Results. The majority (70.6%) of the participants were females. Mean (SD) age was 37.30 ± (10.41) years and ranged from 18 to 78 years. 25.4% of participants had dual infection, 99% due to Plasmodium falciparum species. Mean MPDC was 265 ± 31.8 (SD) cells/μl and ranged from 20 to 2500 cells/μl. Dual infection was highest (37.5%) among respondents in the age group ≥60 years. Prevalence was similar among other age groups (p=0.165) and gender (p=0.942). Of the 16 hematological parameters evaluated, 11 showed significant difference between HIV mono-infected and dual infected participants. Of the 11 parameters, only 7 (Hb, MCHC, red cells count, neutrophil and lymphocyte percentage, absolute lymphocyte count, and red cell distribution width) were significantly predictive of changes with respect to MPDC. Conclusions. MPDC was significantly predictive of changes in 7 hematological parameters among dual infected participants in these settings. In routine malaria diagnosis, MPDC determination with respect to changes in some hematological parameters should be considered in ART programs for improved patient management.
