Aphanius fasciatus is a small fish occurring in Mediterranean brackish environments. In Cyprus it is known from three localities separated by long stretches of coast. The genetic diversity of these populations was evaluated using fragments of two mitochondrial genes. A comparison with the other available data showed that Cyprus populations represent a distinct lineage. The other lineages are concentrated in a relatively small area between the Strait of Sicily and the Western Ionian Sea, while all other areas include a subset of these lineages, suggesting that the aforementioned area might have acted as a glacial refugium. Landlocked North-African populations diverge from all other populations, suggesting that they might have originated in the Late Pleistocene, during transgression events of the Mediterranean Sea in North-African inland water bodies. The genetic diversity of A. fasciatus varied across different Cyprus populations, with a pattern mirroring the degree of environmental degradation, which likely affected population genetic variability through demographic reductions. The three Cyprus populations showed genetic uniqueness, suggesting the need of population-based management practices; the low genetic diversity of two populations, and the number of threats affecting them, suggest that the species should be considered endangered at national level and deserves protection measures.

The cryptic diversity in the polychaete Syllis gracilis Grube, 1840, in the Mediterranean Sea was examined with an integrative morpho-molecular approach. Individuals of S.gracilis were collected at eleven Mediterranean localities to provide an insight into the role of brackish environments in inducing cryptic speciation. The examination of morphological features combined with a molecular genetic analysis based on a partial sequence of the 16S rRNA gene highlighted discrepancies between morphological and molecular diversity. Morphological data allowed to identify a morphotype with short appendages occurring in coralline algae communities and another one with long appendages observed in brackish-water environments and Sabellaria reefs. Multivariate analyses showed that sampling localities were the greatest source of morphological divergence, suggesting that phenotypic plasticity may play a role in local adaptations of S.gracilis populations. Molecular data showed the occurrence of four divergent lineages not corresponding to morphological clusters. Different species delimitation tests gave conflicting results, retrieving, however, at least four separated entities. Some lineages occurred in sympatry and were equally distributed in marine and brackish-water environments, excluding a biogeographic or ecological explanation of the observed pattern and suggesting instead ancient separation between lineages and secondary contact. The co-occurrence of different lineages hindered the identification of the lineage corresponding to S.gracilis sensu stricto. The discrepancy between morphological and molecular diversity suggests that different environmental and biogeographic features may interact in a complex and unpredictable way in shaping diversity patterns. An integrative approach is needed to provide a satisfactory insight on evolutionary processes in marine invertebrates.

A molecular phylogeny of the family Paraonidae was reconstructed on the basis of 16S rDNA, COI and 18S rDNA sequences obtained from 66 individuals belonging to 38 nominal species and subspecies. In agreement with previous findings, Paraonidae represent a monophyletic group, closely related to Sternaspidae. The topology obtained by the Bayesian and Maximum Likelihood analyses on the combined dataset was not consistent with the traditional view on Paraonidae evolution, nor with a recent cladistic analysis. According to our results, Paraonidae are divided in five clades. The earliest branching clade (Clade I) included five species of the genera Cirrophorus and Paradoneis, whereas the remaining species of these genera were included in the Clade II. The genus Levinsenia is monophyletic and represents the sister group of a highly supported clade including some morphologically homogeneous species previously assigned to the genus Aricidea, which is here described as Blakeia n. gen. The remaining species of Aricidea clustered in a clade that included Paraonis as well. Paraonis can be interpreted as a pedomorphic form of Aricidea, accounting for the strong morphological divergence between the two genera. For priority rules, Aricidea should be considered a junior synonym of Paraonis. None of the subgenera traditionally recognised within Aricidea were monophyletic; in addition, the shallow molecular divergence identified among species, in particular for 18S rDNA sequences, suggests that the adaptive radiation of the genus Aricidea is relatively recent. Phylogenetic relationships suggested that the median antenna is an ancestral character, which has been independently lost several times, though a long, cirriform antenna only occurs in the genus Aricidea. The ancestral number of pre-branchial chaetigers is most likely three, even though arrangements with a higher number of chaetigers have been probably achieved at least twice independently. Notopodial modified chaetae appear to be a plesiomorphy of Paraonidae and they have been lost subsequently, whereas neuropodial modified chaetae have been acquired at least thrice independently through the evolutionary history of the family. Paraonidae show a strikingly high occurrence of cryptic and pseudocryptic species; results of the present work suggest that environmental features play a crucial role in the diversification of this family, whereas the influence of geographical distance appears less pronounced. Lastly, despite their importance in deep-water environments, Paraonidae probably are a primarily shallow-water family, that radiated in the deep sea secondarily.

Perna viridis is a mussel commonly distributed along the Asian Indo-Pacific coasts. It is one of the main cultured species of that region. Previous studies focused mostly on the native populations within single countries; with the present study we analyzed the genetic diversity of P. viridis in a large study area, spanning from Oman to southern China. Three molecular markers were used, namely portions of the nuclear ITS region, and the mitochondrial COI gene and D-Loop region. The nuclear marker showed moderate levels of genetic diversity (haplotype diversity h = 0.543 to 0.897) and nucleotide diversity π = 0.0022 to 0.0064); whereas mitochondrial markers exhibited higher levels of genetic variability (h = 0.858 to 0.964 and π = 0.0012 to 0.0079). The estimates of inter-sample genetic divergence (FST) and the analysis of molecular variance highlighted that the Thai population is genetically divergent from the others. Our results showed the genetic variation of P. viridis at the rim of South China Sea and obtained the genetic basic information of P. viridis.

Recent research hypothesised that the Siculo-Tunisian Strait might fit, at least for some species, the picture of a genetic transitional zone instead of a sharp genetic break between the Western and Eastern Mediterranean basins. The present study aimed at using the common Octopus, Octopus vulgaris as an empirical test-case to evaluate this hypothesis. To accomplish this goal, 458 new sequences of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit I were used. Combining the new sequences with those available on public databases, we assembled a dataset containing 920 sequences to investigate the spatial genetic patterns across 34 Mediterranean populations of O. vulgaris. The genetic structure of this species was assessed combining analysis of molecular variance and Median-Joining networks. Results supported the hypothesis of a complex spatial genetic pattern across the Sicilian channel. Contemporary factors, such as marine currents, likely affect the species’ genetic structuring across this area. Overall, our results highlighted that focusing the attention on the whole transitional area rather than on a unique genetic break might help to detect similar patterns across different species. Finally, acknowledging the occurrence of complex spatial genetic patterns across transitional zones may improve stock identification and management practices for commercially valuable species.

Marine litter, that is solid materials deliberately or accidentally released into marine and coastal environments, is a growing issue both at local and global scale. In particular, litter accumulation on beaches represents a relevant problem in touristic coastal areas. The DPSIR framework, already applied to tackle other environmental issues, can help in analysing the origin, impact, and possible solution of material stranded on the beach allowing a holistic approach in the “one health” perspective. It was applied in a popular sandy bathing location in the North-Western Tuscany (Italy). Information and data on origin and fate of beach-stranded material as well as existing local strategies were retrieved from a stakeholders’ network. In summer 2020, a monitoring campaign was performed to evaluate the sanitary state of the shoreline and the impact of this material on coastal habitat. In a 7-year period (2014-2020), a mean amount of 1.548,3 tons of beach-stranded material have been collected and treated to separate sand (55%), organic green fraction (31%), and anthropogenic debris (2%), while 12% weight-loss was attributable to evaporation. Analysis of historical environmental data revealed that shoreline accumulation of this material was associated with low atmospheric pressure, medium-strong winds, and storms. Preliminary monitoring data showed that the green fraction was mainly represented by wood and terrestrial plants with little quantity of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica, while most of the anthropogenic debris was rubber and metal. Microbial pollution of beached material was at least one order of magnitude higher than the surrounding environment (sand and seawater) for total coliforms, Escherichia coli, intestinal enterococci, and total fungal load. Overall, our results indicate a potential impact of beach-stranded material in this coastal area, with possible health risk for human population. The instruments already in place for the management of beached material, although consistent, could be further improved.

Introduction and aim: The urodynamic study is an invasive examination that allows a thorough evaluation of the functional activity of the lower urinary tract (bladder, urethra). The execution of urodynamic study exposes the patient to the risk of contracting infections of the lower urinary tract. Prevention of urinary tract infections consists in the avoidance of risk factors and prophylaxis with antimicrobial and non-antimicrobial measures. In this article, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a phytotherapeutic product composed of D-mannose, Hibiscus sabdariffa, and Lactobacillus plantarum in the prevention of infectious events following invasive urodynamic examination. Materials and methods: We selected 100 female consecutive patients (age 19–87 years) that underwent urodynamic invasive procedure. We prescribed 14-day therapy with D-mannose, H. sabdariffa, and L. plantarum to these 100 patients after urodynamic invasive test. After that, we have examined urine cultures and urinary symptoms through telephone interviews and hospital outpatient visits to evaluate the possible presence of urinary tract infections. Results: Urinary tract infections were observed through urine culture in 13% of the selected patients; of the 13 urinary tract infections, 9 were observed in patients with urinary tract recurrent infections in the last year and the other 4 cases were associated with patients with no urinary infection in the last year. Three women reported some urinary symptoms and underwent antibiotic therapy. The other 10 cases were classified as asymptomatic bacteriuria. Three cases were related to patients presenting with pelvic organ prolapse. Eight cases were instead related to significant post-voiding residue (>100). Six patients with urinary tract infection reported constipation in the last year. All patients completed the prescribed therapy due to the affordable price of the product and no side effects have been reported. Conclusion: Our study about the administration of D-mannose, H. sabdariffa, and L. plantarum after invasive urodynamic examination underlined how this phytotherapeutic product can reduce the risk of bacteriuria and urinary tract infection in women.

Cirrophorus nikebianchii sp. nov. is described from brackish-water and organically enriched marine environments of the Mediterranean Sea. The new species is characterized by a very small prostomial antenna and a high number of branchiae pairs. A phylogenetic analysis carried out through the use of three molecular markers (16S rRNA, 18S rRNA and COI) supports the distinction between C. nikebianchii and C. furcatus, a closely related species with which it has been misidentified. Preliminary results obtained show that the genera Cirrophorus and Paradoneis are not reciprocally monophyletic, with uncertain relationships with the remaining genera of Paraonidae. This outcome suggests that the evolutionary history of Paraonidae is less straightforward than previously supposed. Moreover, the uncertainty about the taxonomic status of Paraonides neapolitana, type species of the genus Paraonides, makes the revamping of the taxonomy of Paraonidae more challenging. Awaiting support from studies including more species, and based on morphological and genetic data as well, we suggest to provisionally maintain the current use of Cirrophorus and Paradoneis, and to assign to Paraonella the species traditionally assigned to Paraonides.

House-dust mites (HDM) allergy is the prevailing condition in subjects allergic to inhalants. Clinical studies with HDM extracts—either subcutaneous (SCIT) or sublingual (SLIT) have long been characterized by small sample size, varying allergen doses, and poorly defined endpoints assessing disease severity. In the last decade, well-designed, randomized, controlled studies recruiting thousands of patients have been conducted with newly developed HDM sublingual tablets (SQ®-HDM tablets). This drug is easily dispersible in the oral cavity due to the patented Zydis® technology and its allergen composition is balanced in terms of group I and group II major mite allergen content, reflecting the equal contribution of the two components to HDM sensitization. HDM is the most common allergen associated with asthma. Clinical efficacy of the SQ® HDM SLIT-tablet in HDM allergic asthma has been evaluated in randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials. Both endpoints related to “present” asthma control (inhaled corticosteroid—ICS) as well as endpoints related to “future” asthma control (occurrence of asthma exacerbations) were included in these studies, in agreement with GINA (Global Initiative for Asthma) guidelines. Based on the positive results of these studies, SQ®-HDM SLIT-tablets were approved Europe-wide as registered drug for treating moderate-to-severe allergic rhinitis with or without allergic asthma and not well controlled HDM allergic asthma, associated with allergic rhinitis of any severity. GINA guidelines in 2017 included SLIT-tablet-based immunotherapy as an “add-on” treatment for asthmatic patients sensitized to HDM; indeed, allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is considered to be a complementary treatment option that targets the immunological of allergic diseases, representing the only treatment potentially disease-modifier or, at least, with a long-term efficacy. The availability of a safe, standardized, registered treatment for HDM respiratory allergies is pivotal in the immunotherapy field, pushing it out of a century-long limbo of amatorial interest towards the full dignity deserved by the only casual treatment of respiratory allergies.

Ruditapes decussatus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Veneridae) is an Atlanto-Mediterranean bivalve whose populations have experienced reductions and, in some instances, hybridisation with allochthonous R. philippinarum. Acquisition of additional genetic knowledge concerning the present R. decussatus populations is essential to address adequate conservation plans for this species. For this purpose, we analysed a portion of the mtDNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) region in populations from the western Mediterranean, where this species represents a harvested fishery resource. Our analyses revealed an overall lack of genetic structure within the western Mediterranean area, and the occurrence of mtDNA substructuring between the Aegean and Marmara seas and the remaining populations from the whole Mediterranean basin and the South European Atlantic coast. The results obtained for populations from Sardinia, where extensive restocking programmes have not been reported and where R. philippinarum is rare and localised, suggest that intensive harvesting and potential dispersal alone may have been able to shape the genetic variation identified in the local R. decussatus populations.

Phylogeographical studies can reveal hidden patterns in the evolutionary history of species. Comparative analyses of closely related species can further help disentangle the relative contributions of processes responsible for such patterns. In this work, the phylogeography of two aristeid species, Aristeus antennatus and Aristaeomorpha foliacea, was compared through multiple genetic markers. These marine shrimp species are of high commercial importance, and are exploited in the Mediterranean Sea (MED) and in Mozambique Channel (MOZ) where they occur in partial sympatry. Aristeus antennatus (N = 50) from Western and Eastern Mediterranean (WM and EM, respectively), Atlantic Ocean (AO) and MOZ, and Aristaeomorpha foliacea (N = 40) from WM, EM, MOZ North-Western Australia (AUS) were analyzed with two nuclear genes (PEPCK and NaK) and one mitochondrial (COI) gene. Within the study area differences were found between the two species in their phylogeographical patterns, suggesting distinct responses to environmental changes. Monophyly of Aristeus antennatus was found across its distributional range. This pattern contrasted by a deep evolutionary split within Aristaeomorpha foliacea where genetic diversity followed geography distinguishing MED-MOZ and AUS. We propose that the AUS lineage of A. foliacea warrants consideration as a distinct species, with consequent implications in systematics and resource management.

The census of natural populations provides relevant information for both conservation purposes and environmental monitoring. In the present work, natural populations of the killifish Aphanius fasciatus (Teleostei: Cyprinodontidae) were censused in the Italian territory. The historical distribution of the species was reconstructed with the aid of bibliographic material and museal samples, in order to evaluate the extent of changes in its distribution. Three periods (pre-1990s, 1990s, post-1990s) and five habitat types (lagoons/coastal ponds, saltworks, canals, river mouths, inland water bodies) were considered. Overall, we recorded the presence of A. fasciatus in 82 localities, the majority of which are lagoons/ponds. The species showed a widespread decline and sometimes local population extinction, due to habitat degradation and competition with the introduced poeciliid Gambusia holbrooki. The NFE2L2 gene encodes the transcription factor Nrf2 best known for regulating the expression of antioxidant and detoxification genes. Gene knockout approaches have demonstrated its universal cytoprotective features. While Nrf2 has been the topic of intensive research in cancer biology since its discovery in 1994, understanding the role of Nrf2 in cardiovascular disease has just begun. The literature concerning Nrf2 in experimental models of atherosclerosis, ischemia, reperfusion, cardiac hypertrophy, heart failure, and diabetes supports its cardiac protective character. In addition to antioxidant and detoxification genes, Nrf2 has been found to regulate genes participating in cell signaling, transcription, anabolic metabolism, autophagy, cell proliferation, extracellular matrix remodeling, and organ development, suggesting that Nrf2 governs damage resistance as well as wound repair and tissue remodeling. A long list of small molecules, most derived from natural products, have been characterized as Nrf2 inducers. These compounds disrupt Keap1-mediated Nrf2 ubquitination, thereby prohibiting proteasomal degradation and allowing Nrf2 protein to accumulate and translocate to the nucleus, where Nrf2 interacts with sMaf to bind to ARE in the promoter of genes. Recently alternative mechanisms driving Nrf2 protein increase have been revealed, including removal of Keap1 by autophagy due to p62/SQSTM1 binding, inhibition of βTrCP or Synoviolin/Hrd1-mediated ubiquitination of Nrf2, and de novo Nrf2 protein translation. We review here a large volume of literature reporting historical and recent discoveries about the function and regulation of Nrf2 gene. Multiple lines of evidence presented here support the potential of dialing up the Nrf2 pathway for cardiac protection in the clinic.

One of the largest nursery colonies of Rhinolophus ferrumequinum in Italy occurs in the Natural Park of Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli, Tuscany, with the species roosting in several buildings. We identified various roosts used by R. ferrumequinum within the park and investigated their microclimatic parameters (temperature, relative humidity and daily temperature excursion). We monitored roost use for one year and found it not only to be influenced by season and the microclimatic conditions of different roosts, but also by occasional stress conditions such as disturbance by predators. We also studied nightly emergence behavior, specifically we considered how this is influenced by climatic (temperature, relative humidity and evening light intensity) and demographic (presence of pups, subadults and colony size) parameters. The colony always performed a pre-emergence behavior and we found that its onset occurred earlier at higher temperatures, lower evening light intensity, in larger colonies and in the presence of pups. High temperature and low evening light intensity also resulted in a longer nightly emergence, which was also identified in larger colonies and when subadults were present. This study highlights the importance of the conservation of multiple roosts within the distribution range of R. ferrumequinum nurseries. Additionally, we demonstrated how certain climatic and demographic factors influence both pre-emergence and emergence behavior.

The model marine broadcast-spawner barnacle Chthamalus montagui was investigated to understand its genetic structure and quantify levels of population divergence, and to make inference on historical demography in terms of time of divergence and changes in population size. We collected specimens from rocky shores of the north-east Atlantic Ocean (4 locations), Mediterranean Sea (8) and Black Sea (1). The 312 sequences 537 bp) of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I allowed to detect 130 haplotypes. High within-location genetic variability was recorded, with haplotype diversity ranging between h = 0.750 and 0.967. Parameters of genetic divergence, haplotype network and Bayesian assignment analysis were consistent in rejecting the hypothesis of panmixia. C. montagui is genetically structured in three geographically discrete populations, which corresponded to north-eastern Atlantic Ocean, western-central Mediterranean Sea, and Aegean Sea-Black Sea. These populations are separated by two main effective barriers to gene flow located at the Almeria-Oran Front and in correspondence of the Cyclades Islands. According to the ‘isolation with migration’ model, adjacent population pairs diverged during the early to middle Pleistocene transition, a period in which geological events provoked significant changes in the structure and composition of palaeocommunities. Mismatch distributions, neutrality tests and Bayesian skyline plots showed past population expansions, which started approximately in the Mindel-Riss interglacial, in which ecological conditions were favourable for temperate species and calcium-uptaking marine organisms.

This study provides data on the genetic structuring of the pipefish Syngnathus abaster in the western Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. A total of 109 specimens were collected in brackish-water biotopes. The control region and three other regions of the mitochondrial genome were analysed. The most relevant result was the high genetic structuring found by Bayesian inference (BI), maximum likelihood (ML) and network analyses, which were consistent in showing three well-separated clusters of S. abaster populations. Furthermore, BI and ML did not support the monophyly of the taxon S. abaster. These results suggest the occurrence of a species complex in the study area, whose differentiation may have occurred since the Pleistocene. The results also show a very high genetic variability at the inter-population level, with no shared haplotypes among sites. Evolutionary forces due to the fragmented nature of the brackish-water habitats may account for the high genetic divergence found among the groups and populations. Finally, although dispersal by rafting over long distances may occasionally occur, this study suggests linear stepping-stone model of colonization to be most likely. The complexity of the results obtained suggests that further studies are needed to elucidate the phylogeny of S. abaster.

The giant red shrimp, Aristaeomorpha foliacea, is a commercially important species in the Mediterranean Sea (MED), Mozambique Channel (MOZ), and north western Australia (AUS). 685 bp of the mitochondrial COI gene was sequenced in 317 individuals from six Mediterranean and two Indian Ocean localities. Genetic diversity estimates of Indian Ocean samples were higher than those of MED counterparts. AMOVA, phylogenetic tree, haplotype network and Bayesian assignment analyses detected three haplogroups, corresponding to MED, MOZ and AUS, separated by three and 38 mutational steps, respectively. Within MED shallow genetic divergence between populations was dependent on local oceanographical characteristics. Mismatch distribution analysis and neutrality tests provided a consistent indication of past population expansion in each region considered. Our results provide the first evidence of genetic structure in A. foliacea and suggest a scenario of allopatric speciation within the Indian Ocean that, however needs deeper examination.

BACKGROUND: The crayfish Procambarus clarkii inflicts severe ecological and economic damages in Europe. To develop an efficient method for its control, four experiments were carried out to assess the impact of natural pyrethrum (i.e. Pyblast) on crayfish: (1) the 24 h LC100 and LC50 were quantified on crayfish; (2) the breakdown time of the 24 h LC100 was assessed using Daphnia magna as a bioindicator; the effects of 24 h LC100 on crayfish were investigated by applying the biocide into burrows (3) and in a drainage channel (4). RESULTS: Pyblast concentrations of 0.05 and 0.02 mg L−1 corresponded to 24 h LC100 and LC50 respectively. The concentration of 0.05 mg L−1 broke down after 72 h, whereas 0.02 mg L−1 did not cause any significant mortality in D. magna after 24 h. However, 0.05 mg L−1 had no effect on crayfish when introduced into the burrows, but led to a mortality of 95% when applied in the water. CONCLUSION: Experimental evidence is provided for the efficacy of Pyblast to control invasive crayfish. Obviously, before its use on a large scale, further studies are needed to find a concentration that will achieve the target 100% mortality with the shortest recovery time of the environment. Two species of spurdog of the genus Squalus occur in the Gulf of Gabes (southern Tunisia, central Mediterranean): the longnose spurdog Squalus blainvillei (Risso, 1827) and a short-snout spurdog of the Squalus megalops-cubensis group. Morphometric and meristic data as well as a genetic analyses (DNA inter-simple sequence repeat markers and molecular barcoding methods) support the assignation of this short-snout spurdog to Squalus megalops (Macleay, 1881). Squalus megalops occurs commonly in temperate and tropical Australian waters, and is also thought to occur in the eastern Atlantic, southern Indian Ocean and western North Pacific although these records need to be confirmed. Our study confirms that it occurs in the Mediterranean Sea. Populations of both S. blainvillei and S. megalops are described based on Tunisian material.

Phylogeographical analysis of Paracentrotus lividus was carried out by means of sequencing the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (1143 bp) of 260 individuals collected at 22 Mediterranean and four Atlantic localities. Against a background of high haplotype diversity and shallow genetic structuring, we observed significant genetic divergence between the Adriatic Sea and the rest of the Mediterranean, as well as between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic sample groups. Furthermore, on the largest spatial scale, isolation by distance was detected. Three main haplogroups were identified by network and Bayesian assignment analyses. The relative proportions of haplogroups were different in the four regions considered, with the exception of Western and Eastern Mediterranean that showed a similar pattern. This result together with the outcome of Snn statistics, analysis of molecular variance and network analyses allowed to identify three weakly differentiated populations corresponding to the Atlantic, Western + Eastern Mediterranean, and Adriatic seas. Analyses of mismatch distribution and neutrality tests were consistent with the presence of genetic structuring and past demographic expansion(s). From a fisheries perspective, the results obtained in the present study are consistent with genetic sustainability of current exploitation; local depleted stocks are recurrently replenished by recruits that may have originated from nonharvested areas. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 100, 910-923.

ISSRs (Inter Simple Sequence Repeats) were employed to compare the genetic structure of Chthamalus stellatus and Tesseropora atlantica in the Azores. The two barnacles differ as regards life cycle: the former conducting pelagic life for about 22 days, the latter for only 24 h. Thirty individuals of each species were analysed from four locations of three Azorean islands. Five ISSR primers produced, respectively, 117 and 79 polymorphic bands in C. stellatus and T. atlantica. Estimates of among-samples genetic diversity suggested extensive connectivity in the former species and isolation in the latter. AMOVA further supported these results by attributing 2% of genetic variance to the among-islands component of C. stellatus and 30% to T. atlantica. Results are consistent with expectations based on species life history and corroborate the importance of pelagic stages in determining the degree of genetic structuring in benthic marine invertebrates.

Pinctada imbricata radiata (Leach, 1814) was the first Lessepsian bivalve reported in the Mediterranean Sea where it is progressively expanding westward. Its native range includes the Indian Ocean and western Atlantic. The present study provides the first insight into the species’ phylogeographic structure, by analysing sequences of a 385-bp region of the mitochondrial gene coding for the subunit I of the cytochrome c oxydase (COI). Sixty-four individuals collected at seven Mediterranean localities were sequenced; in addition, eight COI sequences of individuals from the species’ native range (Persian Gulf) were retrieved from GenBank. Overall, we detected 10 haplotypes. With this work we addressed some molecular systematic issues within the Mugil cephalus species complex. Particular attention was paid to the debated situations of: (i) Mugil liza, occurring in partial sympatry with Mugil cephalus in the northwestern Atlantic, and (ii) Mugil platanus, considered by some authors a synonymy of the former species and distributed in the southwestern Atlantic. We sequenced 79 individuals of a 465-bp portion of the mitochondrial control region (CR) from 8 western Atlantic and 2 Mediterranean localities. In addition, all CR sequences available from GenBank for the studied taxa were added to our dataset, for a total of 323 individuals. Overall, 229 haplotypes corresponding to 8 divergent monophyletic lineages were detected. Results of phylogenetic analyses were consistent with the occurrence of past speciation events producing the observed lineages. Of these lineages, 7 correspond to cryptic species and one is constituted by M. liza and M. platanus. As a matter of fact, these 2 taxa constitute a single lineage within the M. cephalus species complex. However, individuals of M. liza/M. platanus lineage analyzed by means of the 18 mitochondrial markers available in GenBank exhibited a degree of genetic diversity consistent with highly divergent populations. Of the 8 lineages detected, the Mediterraean one (type locality) corresponds to M. cephalus; the lineage M. liza/M. platanus should be named M. liza, under the priority principle, and the left 6 lineages need formal description.

Variation in the number and distribution of paragnaths in populations of the ragworm, Hediste diversicolor, from 14 localities across a large part of its European range was analysed. Significant inter‐population variation was revealed by ANOVA applied to (i) the number of paragnaths in each zone of the pharynx, (ii) the number of paragnaths in each of the two belts (maxillary and oral), (iii) the total number of paragnaths on the pharynx and (iv) the measures of asymmetry for paired zones. No geographical pattern of morphological variation was detected by multidimensional scaling on population centroids and no signals of morphological population substructuring were found. Explanations of variation in paragnath number and pattern among populations may reflect local differences in diet or dominant mode of feeding. About 900 individuals of the intertidal polychaete Ophelia cf. bicornis were collected at four sandy beaches in Corsica, ten in Sardinia and one in Tuscany (Western Mediterranean). They were analysed morphologically and genetically to clarify the taxonomic status of the littoral species of Ophelia in the study area and to assess the population genetic structuring. Two morphotypes were distinguished on the basis of the number of nephridiopore pairs (five or six). Genetic distances, F-statistics and analysis of molecular variance based on eight allozyme genetic markers were consistent in showing the two morphotypes to separate at species level. Thus, the two morphotypes which most authors have included in O. bicornis s.l. are not one morphologically variable taxon, but instead constitute two valid species, namely O. bicornis Savigny, 1818, with six pairs of nephridiopores, and O. barquii Fauvel, 1927, with five pairs of nephridiopores. Mechanisms of ecological speciation in a background of gene flow can be taken into account to explain the origin of the two species. Moderate genetic differentiation was found among populations within each species, suggesting that dispersal may not be effective over large distances, or that local selection plays an important role in population differentiation.

Morphological and genetic analyses in four Italian populations of Lebias fasciata were carried out in order to assess the level of differentiation among populations. Fourteen meristic and 23 morphometric characters, relative to the skull, vertebral column, and the rays of the dorsal and anal fins were examined. In addition, variations at seven gene loci were investigated by allozyme electrophoresis. Both morphological and genetic results showed a noteworthy differentiation among the four populations which reflects their high degree of isolation. Allozyme results indicated that genetic variation is consistent with geographical distribution of these populations, while morphological differentiation cannot be interpreted biogeographically. The lack of dispersion phases in the life cycle of L. fasciata and its limited potential for gene flow account for the genetic divergence among populations. Patterns of genetic variation in marine species reflect the interplay of species-specific traits, oceanographic features, historical processes and selection. In the Atlantic–Mediterranean regions, Patella ulyssiponensis (Mollusca: Gastropoda) was previously used as a model to investigate these patterns. Our study gained insight into the genetic patterns of P. ulyssiponensis in the western Mediterranean marine ecoregion (WME), by means of ISSRs and COI. We evaluated the genetic structure of the WME with respect to the Atlantic and eastern Mediterranean, as well as the occurrence of further structuring within this ecoregion. Both population- and individual-based analysis evidenced that WME does not appear to be sharply isolated from the adjacent regions. Within the WME, P. ulyssiponensis displays a pattern of genetic structure that may reflect a chaotic patchiness scenario: structuring is neither related to coastal distance nor to other factors that may constrain dispersal. Compared to the congener P. ferruginea, P. ulyssiponensis shows weaker spatial genetic structure, which may reflect a higher dispersal potential coupled with greater population effective size. Whilst other processes that may have influenced the genetic pattern in the WME remain to be cleared, a recent range expansion coupled with species-specific traits favouring larval dispersal may have contributed to the genetic structuring.

Species of the genus Ophryotrocha are a well-studied group of organisms but, despite the relatively large body of biological studies, little is known about their intra-specific patterns of genetic diversity. In the present study, we analysed the patterns of genetic variation in samples of Ophryotrocha labronica (Polychaeta, Dorvilleidae) collected along the Italian coasts within three regions with different thermal regimes: the Northern Adriatic Sea (NAS), the Ligurian Sea (LS), and the South/Southeast Sicilian Sea (SS). A partial sequence of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene was used as a genetic marker. An analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) showed significant genetic differentiation between the NAS and the other regions. Conversely, little or no genetic structuring was found between the LS and the SS or amongst locations within a given region. A Bayesian phylogenetic tree and a median-joining network provided evidence for the occurrence of two highly divergent genetic lineages characterized by a high average sequence divergence (17.2%, Kimura two-parameter distance). The spatial patterns of genetic variation found in O. labronica may reflect the signature of past expansion events of the two genetic lineages. Although the high sequence divergence suggested that cryptic speciation within O. labronica may have occurred, other traits such as the absence of reproductive isolation, pattern of phenotypic variation and habitat specificity prompted us to regard the two groups as distinct COI lineages of O. labronica .

The pleated ascidian Styela plicata (Lesueur, 1823) is a solitary species commonly found in ports and marinas around the world. It has been recorded in the Mediterranean region since the mid-19th century. In the present work, the species’ genetic diversity was analysed, employing a 613-bp portion of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene from 149 individuals collected in 14 ports along Italian coasts at spatial scales ranging from 1 to approximately 2200 km. Haplotype and nucleotide diversity values were h = 0–0.933 (total h = 0.789) and π = 0–0.145 (total π = 0.0094), respectively. A general southward trend of increasing within-population genetic diversity was observed. Analysis of molecular variance revealed significant genetic structuring but no significant differences were detected among basins, and no isolation by distance was found. Our data were integrated with the COI sequences available from previous studies and re-analysed in order to investigate the possible routes of introduction of this ascidian into the Mediterranean Sea. The presence of the two COI haplogroups detected in previous molecular investigations on S. plicata at intercontinental spatial scale was confirmed in the Mediterranean Sea. The results revealed multiple introductions of S. plicata, although some locations appear to have experienced rapid expansion from few founding individuals with reduced genetic diversity. However, continuous introductions would confound the pattern deriving from single founder events and make it difficult to estimate the time needed for gene diffusion into established populations. This mixing of effects creates difficulties in understanding the past and current dynamics of this introduction, and managing this alien invasive ascidian whose genetic structure is continuously shuffled by vessel-mediated transport.

An investigation of the genetic variability of Octopus vulgaris, an intensively harvested species, was carried out using a mi crosatellite locus as genetic marker. Samples from one eastern At lantic and nine Mediterranean locations were analysed. In each population, the number of alleles at locus Ov06 varied from four to seven and was 21 overall. Observed and expected heterozy‐gosity values ranged from 0.310 to 0.655 and 0.506 to 0.841, re spectively. Permutation tests and the positive average value of FIS showed significant departures from the Hardy‐Weinberg equilibri um, due to a deficit of heterozygotes. FST showed high levels of genetic divergence among the populations. Genetic distance val ues ranged from 0.0004 to 7.1520. The measurement of genetic variability and assessment of population genetic losses are important components of environmental management programs. Twenty-three natural populations of the Mediterranean brackish-water toothcarp Aphanius fasciatus were investigated using different statistical approaches based on genetic data at 13 polymorphic allozyme loci. In general, no differ- ences between values of within-population genetic variability estimates occurred. The Wilcoxon sign-rank test for heterozygosity excess due to a recent bottleneck was conducted on the array of populations. In addition, a qualitative descriptor of allele frequency distribution was used to infer bottlenecks. Only populations from the Orbetello lagoon and La Salina at Elba Island revealed sig- nificant heterozygosity excess under both the infinite allele model (IAM) and stepwise mutation model (SMM). A recent dystrophic crisis may account for the genetic loss detected in the population of A. fasciatus from the Orbetello lagoon, whereas exceptionally high predation pressure and/or the increased mortality rate created by local hydrological conditions could be responsible for the bottle- neck in the population at La Salina. Tests for bottlenecks have proved effective tools for genetic monitoring of A. fasciatus populations.

Allozyme electrophoresis was used to assess temporal genetic variation in three successive generations of the Mediterranean killifish, Aphanius fasciatus. Samplings were carried out in 1995, 1996 and 1997 in a brackish-water habitat at Elba Island, Italy and a total of 212 specimens were collected. The five loci for which polymorphism has been detected in a previous study were assayed. Mean expected heterozygosity values [H=0.397 (SE 0.077), H=0.336 (SE 0.092) and H=0.313 (SE 0.092) in 1995, 1996 and 1997, respectively] were not significantly different by ANOVA test. Deviations from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium were minimal, with only one out of the 15 probability tests showing a significant departure from the equilibrium; whereas genotypic linkage disequilibrium was not detected. Halophila stipulacea (Forssk.) Ascher. is a dioecious seagrass that colonized the Mediterranean basin probably following the opening of the Suez Canal (1869). Natural meadows have been reported since the end of the last century on the eastern side of the basin and only recently along the northern coast of Sicily. In the present study we examined the morphological and genetic variability of two natural meadows located along the Sicilian coast (Vulcano Island and Oliveri-Tindari coastal lakes). In order to determine morphological and genetic polymorphism, samples were collected at different depths (5, 15 and 25 m depth at the Vulcano site) and positions (edge vs mid-bed) within the meadows. Statistically significant differences in phenotypic features were found between the factors “depth” and “position” within the same meadow and between the two localities. Genetic diversity was assessed using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA and found to be high. Deep and shallow stands of the Vulcano Island meadow clustered in different positions in the UPGMA tree. The shallow Vulcano stand was found to be closer to the shallow Oliveri-Tindari meadow than to the deeper stand from Vulcano. Mantel's test did not allow rejection of the null hypothesis of independence of morphological and molecular distance matrices. We conclude that (i) H. stipulacea shows high morphological and genetic polymorphism, (ii) environmental and/or ecological barriers exist between different depths, and (iii) trends of morphological and genetic variability may be influenced by different environmental and/or ecological factors.

Electrophoretic analyses of the tetrameric lactate dehydrogenase isozyme patterns of the endangered cyprinodontid fish Aphanius fasciatus were carried out. Organ and tissue samples of ten individuals of each sex were analysed by cellulose acetate elec‐trophoresis and isoelectric focusing. Isozyme electrophoretic patterns indicated that three LDH loci (Ldh‐A, Ldh‐B and Ldh‐C) were active and showed differential tissue expressions. No differences between sexes were observed. The Ldh‐A and Ldh‐B loci were expressed in all tissues analysed, and the A subunits possessed a net negative charge greater than B subunits. Heterote‐tramers including subunit A were not observed, but a complex heterotetramer banding pattern of subunits B and C was detected. Five samples (30 individuals each) of the Mediterranean cyprinodontid fish, Aphanius fasciatus, were analysed by allozyme electrophoresis for a study concerning genetic structure and gene flow among populations. Forty-three loci, twelve of which were polymorphic at P0.99 level, were analysed. A. fasciatus showed low levels of genetic polymorphism, with expected heterozygosity values ranging from 0.027 (SE = 0.013) to 0.064 (SE = 0.023). The modified Rogers' genetic distances ranged from 0.053 to 0.202. The observed pattern of genetic differentiation among populations, obtained by multidimensional scaling of the modified Rogers' genetic distances, was consistent with geographic distribution. Coancestry coefficient (θ = 0.302, SE = 0.045) indicated a very high degree of genetic subdivision among populations and the estimate of gene flow (the effective number of migrants per generation, Nm = 0.445), computed by Wright's method, showed very restricted gene flow among populations. The regression analysis carried out using log-transformed values of geographic distance against M^ (pairwise values of Nm) gave a regression coefficient, b = −1.03, indicating that a restricted migration rate among populations can occur according to the one-dimensional stepping-stone model. The amount and modality of gene flow in A. fasciatus inferred from the results of the present study are consistent with the absence of dispersal stages and with the fragmented nature of brackish-water habitats along the coasts.

A total of 150 individuals from Aphanius fasciatus from coastal brackish-water habitats was analysed by allozyme electrophoresis to collect data on its genetic variation. From 22 enzymes, 43 putative enzyme-coding loci were resolved, 12 of which were polymorphic at P0·99 level. Only one of the 31 probability tests showed a significant departure from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Aphanius fasciatus showed low levels of genetic polymorphism, with expected heterozygosity values ranging from 0·027 (S.E.=0·013) to 0·064 (s.e.=0·023). Nei's genetic distances between populations ranged from 0·002 to 0·042. Weir & Cockerham F-statistics showed high levels of genetic heterogeneity among populations (jackknifed θ=0·302, s.e.=0·045) and estimates of Nm were < 1, indicating restricted gene flow. Significant positive correlation between genetic distance and geographical distance matrices, detected by Mantel's test (g=1·941; P0·001), is consistent with the prediction that the species is genetically structured by isolation-by-distance.

Cellulose acetate electrophoresis of allozymes was used to differentiate the two endangered Mediterranean killifishes, Aphanius iberus and A. fasciatus. Thirty‐eight putative enzyme‐coding loci were examined in two populations from the Albuixec lagoon (Spain) and from the Biguglia coastal pond (Corsica). Low within‐population polymorphism was detected. The small-spotted catshark Scyliorhinus canicula is a small demersal chondrichthyan distributed on continental shelf and uppermost slope waters of the Mediterranean Sea and north eastern Atlantic Ocean. It has commercial value in some European regions, whereas in other it is considered a bycatch species. Species’ genetic structure was analysed by means of 578 bp mitochondrial COI sequences. A total of 192 individuals (122 obtained in the present work and 70 retrieved from GenBank) from 11 Mediterranean and 1 Atlantic locations were considered. Overall, we detected 27 COI haplotypes, seven of which were newly found. Moreover, a high number of haplotypes were location- and/or region-private. Low values of nucleotide diversity (total π = 0.0027) and moderate to high haplotype diversity (h = 0.500–0.920, total h = 0.827) were found. Significant genetic structuring in the study area was highlighted by AMOVA, Φ-statistics and Bayesian assignment analyses. The Atlantic sample was genetically divergent from Western Mediterranean counterparts and the Adriatic samples diverged from Eastern Mediterranean ones. Instead, Western and Eastern Mediterranean were not significantly divergent, suggesting that the Strait of Sicily is not effective in restricting past or current gene flow. No pattern of isolation by distance was detected. From a fisheries perspective, our results represent the first evidence of genetic structuring in S. canicula and are consistent with the presence of multiple genetic stocks in the study area. Further genetic analyses coupled with a fine grained sampling design are needed to precisely identify the borders of genetic stocks. These data provide a significant contribution for the planning of a long-term effective management policy, which could ensure sustainability of resource exploitation and stock viability.

The occurrence of genetic differentiation among western MediterraneanHediste diversicolor(Polychaeta: Nereididae) populations was assessed by allozyme electrophoresis on cellulose acetate. Seventeen loci were analysed in four populations. The level of the genetic variability was markedly low (mean HLrange: 0.014–0.034), but comparable to that of other brackish water nereidids. The values of Nei genetic distance index (D) confirm the existence of genetic differentiation between the geographically isolated populations at Venice, Elba, Navicelli and Serchio D range: 0.128–0.356). However, the two samples from Serchio and Navicelli, ~15 km apart, were not genetically different (D=0·00005). The level of genetic differentiation inH. diversicolorpopulations followed the isolation-by-distance model. Reduced gene flow amongH. diversicolorpopulations may be explained by its limited dispersal capacity and the eco-physiological barriers that occur between different brackish habitats.

The polymorphism of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase III was studied in the Mediterranean octopus, Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797. A total of 202 specimens from seven sampling sites were analysed with the aim of elucidating patterns of genetic structure in the central Mediterranean Sea and to give an insight into the phylogeny of the Octopus genus. Phylogenetic analyses showed that individuals from the central Mediterranean belong to the O. vulgaris species whose limits should nevertheless be clarified. Concerning genetic structure, two high-frequency haplotypes were present in all locations. The overall genetic divergence (ΦST = 0.05, P < 0.05) indicated a significant genetic structuring in the study area and an AMOVA highlighted a significant break between western and eastern Mediterranean basins (ΦCT = 0.094, P < 0.05). Possible explanations for the observed patterns of genetic structuring are discussed with reference to their relevance for fisheries management.

The polychaete Hediste diversicolor is characterised by a high degree of genetic structure among populations. The genetic differentiation has been related to the presence of cryptic species, corresponding to Atlantic and Mediterranean lineages whose divergence may have been driven by vicariance and/or selection. In this study we used DNA inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers to validate the genetic structure in nine populations from the north-western Mediterranean. We also analysed patterns of genetic differentiation among Mediterranean and Atlantic samples to assess the occurrence of further cryptic species in the north-western Mediterranean . We compared our results with previous mitochondrial DNA data to assess whether nuclear and mitochondrial genetic patterns were consistent. Analysis of ISSR banding patterns showed (1) a geographical structuring within the north-western Mediterranean, and (2) a sharp genetic differentiation between Atlantic and Mediterranean groups of populations, confirming the findings from previous mitochondrial DNA survey. The pattern of genetic variability found in the north-western Mediterranean is unlikely to reflect the occurrence of cryptic species in this area. On the other hand, our results are consistent with the occurrence of two cryptic species in the Mediterranean and Atlantic, whose genetic differentiation may have been driven by vicariance. Finally, this study further highlights the usefulness and effectiveness of ISSR markers for monitoring genetic diversity in aquatic invertebrates.

Background. P1 adhesin protein (170-kDa) is responsible for the interaction between M. pneumoniae and the host. Such protein is the target of specific antibodies produced by the host in response to M. pneumoniae infection. Objectives. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of serological tests for Mycoplasma pneumoniae IgG and IgM on chemiluminescence analyzer LIAISON® and to demonstrate how the determination of specific antibodies is the main tool for accurate diagnosis of Mycoplasma infection. Study Design. Eighty-one unselected samples were assayed by ELISA kits Vircell IgG and IgM (bacterial lysate) and LIAISON® Mycoplasma IgG and IgM (recombinant protein P1). The discordant samples were tested with ELISA Savyon Serorecombinant IgG and IgM (recombinant protein P1) and reclassified according to the consensus rule. Results. Fifty-one samples were concordant between ELISA Vircell IgG and LIAISON® Mycoplasma IgG. After resolution of the 30 discordant: twenty-eight samples were classified concordant negative and one positive. Seventy-seven samples were concordant between ELISA Vircell IgM and LIAISON® Mycoplasma IgM. After resolution of 4 discordant samples: three samples were classified as negative. Conclusions. The higher correlation between LIAISON® and Savyon Serorecombinant is determined by the use of recombinant protein P1 in the solid phase and the type of cut-off calculation allows high specificity and sensitivity. The Mycoplasma pneumoniae IgG and IgM kits, performed in full automation on LIAISON® analyzer, show characteristics comparable to other kits and an easy handling of the sample.

This work reports the first genetic data of Aristaeomorpha foliacea , a marine decapod of high commercial value, from six Mediterranean localities and one new fishing ground in the Mozambique Channel. The use of five Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) primers provided 150 polymorphic loci. Average estimates of genetic diversity did not significantly differ among sampled localities, with a mean value of heterozygosity H = 0.105 ± 0.015. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) allocated > 98% of genetic variability to the within-sample component, displaying values higher than those previously reported in ISSR studies on marine invertebrates. Cluster analyses did not detect geographically or genetically distinct groups. The observed lack of large-scale genetic differentiation is discussed in relation to the high potential for larval dispersal of the species and to features of the marker employed.

The blue and red shrimp Aristeus antenantus supports an important commercial fishery in the Western Mediterranean, adjacent Atlantic waters and Mozambique Channel (western Indian Ocean). This study investigates its genetic structure by examining a total of 506 individuals from Mediterranean, Atlantic and Indian Ocean locations. In order to identify putative genetic stocks, sequences from 16S rDNA (546 bp) and COI (514 bp) genes were used. Genetic diversity, estimated by haplotypic and nucleotidic diversity, was lower in the Western Mediterranean than in samples from other locations. The high haplotypic diversity of the Eastern Mediterranean, Atlantic and Indian Ocean samples reflects the occurrence of a number of private haplotypes, which are also responsible for significant genetic divergence between these samples and the Western Mediterranean ones. The analysis of mismatch distributions, neutrality tests, and star-like patterns present in the network of haplotypes provided consistent inference of past population expansion in the Western Mediterranean, Atlantic and Mozambique Channel regions. The spatial scale of life-history and demographic variation was investigated in the opportunistic polychaete Ophryotrocha labronica La Greca and Bacci. Individuals were collected along the Italian coasts from three thermally different biogeographical regions of the Mediterranean Sea. For each region, populations from four harbours were considered, and for each harbour, two sites were examined. Life-history and demographic traits were investigated after one generation under a common garden experiment, and their variation at the three spatial scales was assessed. All the traits showed high variability with regard to site. A number of life-history and all demographic traits also varied according to the biogeographical region. Conversely, no differences were found between harbours, suggesting that geographical isolation did not contribute to phenotypic variation. Results confirmed the central role of local conditions for the evolution of life history in species colonizing heterogeneous environments, but they also pointed to the importance of large-scale factors in shaping the phenotypic responses of O. labronica, demonstrating the need for a multi-scale approach for obtaining a good measure of natural variation in widespread opportunistic species.

The present study reports new records of the invasive pygmy mussel Xenostrobus securis in six brackish-water localities in the western Mediterranean. Until now X. securis, whose native range includes southern Australia and New Zealand, was also known from the northern Adriatic Sea and southern France. Along the coast of northern Tuscany (Italy) X. securis invaded brackish-water canals in the area between the port of Leghorn and the mouth of the Arno River. Moreover, this mussel has been found in one inner site of the Gulf of Olbia (north-eastern Sardinia, Italy) and at the mouth of the Fluvia River (northern Catalonia, Spain). As an ecosystem engineer, X. securis is an ecologically important species, heavily altering pre-existing benthic communities. Given that its presence in other western Mediterranean sites is highly possible, we recommend a closer monitoring of brackish-water biotopes.

7 páginas, 2 figuras, 4 tablas, [EN] The red and blue shrimp, Aristeus antennatus, inhabits deep shelf waters in the Mediterranean Sea, where the shallower portion of its distribution supports a large commercial fishery. Recent prospecting surveys in the western Mediterranean have detected virgin stocks dwelling at more than 1000 m, but the extent of gene flow between the exploited shallow-dwelling stock and the deep-dwelling stock is unknown. To investigate the genetic structure of the population and estimate the depth component of gene flow, a portion of the mitochondrial DNA 16S gene (547 pb) was sequenced for 321 individuals from four different depths (350, 700, 1100 and 1500 m) at a location in the Catalan Sea. Haplotype and nucleotide diversity values were low and did not significantly differ across depths. Analysis of molecular variance showed no significant genetic differences between depths. Mismatch distribution and neutrality tests indicated that A. antennatus has undergone recent demographic expansion in the two shallowest layers. Our results suggest that the species is genetically structured as a sort of metapopulation in which gene flow that occurs during the larval and juvenile stages, when larvae are carried downstream and juveniles are carried upstream by cascading, plays an important role in the resilience of the exploited layers, [ES] La gamba rosada Aristeus antennatus habita las aguas profundas del Mar Mediterráneo, donde los stocks de aguas más someras soportan una importante presión pesquera. Con el fin de investigar la estructura genética de dichos stocks, y estimar el componente de flujo génico entre ellos, se secuenció una porción de ADN mitocondrial, el gen 16S (547 bp) en 321 individuos procedentes de cuatro profundidades (350, 700, 1100 y 1500 m) de una localidad del mar Catalán. Los valores de diversidad haplotípica y nucleotídica fueron bajos y no resultaron significativos entre profundidades. Two samples ofNeanthes succinea(Frey & Leuckart 1847) from the Mediterranean Sea were investigated. Twenty-one loci were analysed; seven of them were polymorphic in both populations. The level of heterozygosity was 2.2% and 4.4% in populations from the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic coasts respectively. The value of Nei's genetic identity index (1=0.965), together with the mean F(IT) (=0.350), shows that the samples can be considered reproductively isolated populations. F-statistics indicate that ME-1 is the discriminant locus between populations.
