An experiment was carried out to determine the apparent metabolizable energy (AME) and coefficient of apparent ileal digestibility (CAID) of nutrients of two pea cultivars (Pisum sativum L. ʻSohviʼ and ʻKaritaʼ), two fava bean cultivars (Vicia Faba L. ʻKontuʼ and ʻUkkoʼ) and one blue (narrowleaf) lupin cultivar (Lupinus angustifolius ʻPershatsvetʼ) in 144 5-week-old broilers. The methods used were excreta collection and slaughter method. A total of six feeding treatments including the basal diet were tested. Pea, faba bean and lupin diets consisted of 500 g of basal diet with 500 g of legume grain per kg respectively. Chromium (Cr) mordant straw (1.7 g/kg each feed) was included in the diets as an indigestible marker and the diets were pelleted. The CAID of nutrients for the individual test legume seeds was calculated by the difference. Essential amino acid content was highest in faba beans, moderate in peas and lowest in lupin. The AME of pea cv. Karita (13.8 MJ/kg DM) was higher (P ≤ 0.05) than that of faba beans (≤ 12.4 MJ/kg DM), while AME of pea cv. Sohvi (12.2 MJ/kg DM) did not differ (P > 0.05) from that of faba beans. The AME (7.0 MJ/kg DM) and the CAID of dry matter, organic matter and ash of lupin were lower than in pea and faba bean (P ≤ 0.05). The CAID of lysine and methionine were higher (P ≤ 0.05) in peas (lysine ≥ 0.858, methionine ≥ 0.831) than in faba bean cv. Kontu (lysine = 0.869, methionine = 0.714). The CAID of lysine and methionine in lupin and faba bean cv. Ukko (lysine ≥ 0.891, methionine ≥ 0.791) did not differ (P > 0.05) from other legume varieties. The CAID of cystine was higher (P ≤ 0.05) in peas and lupin (≥0.671) than in faba beans (≤0.516). The CAID of threonine varied from 0.770 (faba bean cv. Kontu) to 0.852 (pea cv. Sohvi), but did not differ statistically among cultivars (P > 0.05). In conclusion, peas cv. Karita and cv. Sohvi were a good source of energy and amino acids and their amino acids were well digested except for cystine which was moderately digested in cv. Karita. Faba beans were a moderate source of energy and have a good digestibility of lysine, but digestibility of the most amino was found to be relatively low. Most amino acids, in particular lysine was well digested in blue lupin, but it was a poor source of AME. The poor energy value of blue lupin was related to its poor apparent ileal digestibility of dry and organic matter.

ICOPP -tutkimushankkeessa tehdyn kokeen tavoitteena oli määrittää luonnonmukaisesti tuotetun, EU:ssa sioille toistaiseksi kielletyn eläinperäisen rehuaineen, mustasotilaskärpäsen (Hermetia illucens) toukista valmistetun jauhon, aminohappojen standardoitu ohutsuolisulavuus porsailla. Jauhot oli tuotettu FiBL -luomututkimuslaitoksessa Sveitsissä. Kokeessa oli kaksi hiilihydraattipohjaisella alustalla kasvatettua toukkaerää, joista ensimmäisessä rasva oli erotettu mekaanisesti, toisessa heksaaniuutolla. Koe-eläiminä oli 40 risteytysporsasta (alkupaino 17 kg) pariruokinnalla. Koeruokintoja oli viisi: 1) vähäproteiininen rehu aminohappojen endogeenisen perustason erityksen määritystä varten, 2) rehu, jossa oli erän 1 toukkajauhoa 10,2 %, 3) rehu, jossa oli erän 1 toukkajauhoa 20,4 %, 4) rehu, jossa oli erän 2 toukkajauhoa 9,3 % ja 5) rehu, jossa oli erän 2 toukkajauhoa 18,6 % rehun kuiva-aineessa (KA). Ryhmien 2‒5 rehuissa oli lisäksi heravalkuaisjauhetta 22,9 % rehun KA:ssa. Kokeen lopussa siat lopetettiin aminohappojen ohutsuolisulavuuden määrittämistä varten. Erän 1 toukkajauho sisälsi 629 g raakavalkuaista, 185 g raakarasvaa, 318 g NDF ja 51 g tuhkaa/kg KA. Vastaavat arvot toisen erän toukkajauholle olivat 705 g, 90 g, 287 ja 53 g/kg KA. Hyönteisten sisältämä kuitu on selluloosaa muistuttavaa kitiiniä ja siihen sitoutuneen typen (ADF-N) käyttökelpoisuus on huono. Kokeen toukkajauhojen kokonaistypestä noin 12 % oli ADF-typpeä. Erän 1 toukkajauhossa oli 31,7 g lysiiniä, 24,3 g treoniinia, 12,0 g metioniinia, 3,5 g kystiiniä ja 39,6 g/kg KA valiinia. Vastaavat arvot toisen erän toukkajauholle olivat 37,8 g, 27,4 g, 14,1 g, 3,7 g ja 44,2 g/kg KA. Toukkaerä, toukkajauhon lisäystaso tai porsaiden sukupuoli eivät vaikuttaneet koedieettien aminohappojen näennäiseen ohutsuolisulavuuteen (AID). Mekaanisesti erotetun toukkajauhon (erä 1) standardoidut (SID) aminohappojen ohutsuolisulavuudet olivat suurempia verrattuna heksaaniuutettuun toukkajauhoon (erä 2). Välttämättömien aminohappojen SID oli ensimmäisessä toukkajauhoerässä 81,3 ‒ 94,8 % ja toisessa toukkajauhoerässä 64,0 – 81,8 %. Lysiinin standardoitu ohutsuolisulavuus oli ensimmäisessä toukkajauhoerässä 81,3 %, metioniinin 90,7 %, kystiinin 49,8 %, treoniinin 82,5 % ja valiinin 92,9 %. Vastaavat sulavuudet toisessa toukkajauhoerässä olivat 77,2 %, 81,8 %, -10,8 %, 64,0 % ja 73,6 %. Mustasotilaskärpäsen toukkien käyttö valkuaisrehuna edellyttää rasvan erottamista, koska toukat sisältävät noin 380 g raakarasvaa/kg ka. Mekaaninen rasvan erotus on aminohappojen sulavuudelle edullisempi kuin heksaaniuutto. Kitiiniin sitoutunut käyttökelvoton typpi on huomioitava ruokinnan suunnittelussa. Kalajauhoon verrattuna toukkajauhossa on vähemmän välttämättömiä aminohappoja ja niiden sulavuus on huonompi. Toukkajauhon tuotannon kannattavuutta tulisi selvittää.

ICOPP -tutkimushankkeessa tehdyn kokeen tavoitteena oli määrittää Ruotsissa luonnonmukaisesti tuotetun, EU:ssa sioille toistaiseksi kielletyn eläinperäisen rehuaineen, sinisimpukkajauhon (Mytilus edulis), ravintoaineiden kokonaissulavuus ja aminohappojen standardoitu ohutsuolisulavuus (SID) porsailla. Jauho oli valmistettu kuorituista sinisimpukoista. Koe-eläiminä oli 24 risteytysporsasta (alkupaino noin 19 kg) pariruokinnalla. Koeruokintoja oli aluksi kaksi: 1) vähäproteiininen rehu aminohappojen endogeenisen perustason erityksen määritystä varten, 2) rehu, jossa sinisimpukkajauho oli ainoa valkuaisen lähde, 30 % rehun kuiva-aineessa (KA). Sinisimpukkaryhmän porsaat sairastuivat ripuliin, joten ravintoaineiden kokonaissulavuutta ei voitu määrittää. Sinisimpukkarehua laimennettiin heravalkuaisjauhoa sisältävällä rehulla. Muutosten jälkeen sinisimpukkakäsittelyt olivat: sinisimpukkajauhoa 12 % rehun KA:ssa ja sinisimpukkajauhoa 18 % rehun KA:ssa. Kokeen lopussa siat lopetettiin aminohappojen ohutsuolisulavuuden määrittämistä varten. Sinisimpukkajauho sisälsi 684 g raakavalkuaista, 105 g raakarasvaa ja 94 g tuhkaa/kg KA. Lysiiniä oli 47,8 g, treoniinia 30,6 g, metioniinia 17,0 g, kystiiniä 8,4 g ja valiinia 29,8 g/kg ka. Koerehujen aminohappojen näennäiset ohutsuolisulavuudet (AID) olivat 69,9 ‒ 84,9 % alemmalla sinisimpukkatasolla ja 77,9 ‒ 87,2 % ylemmällä sinisimpukkatasolla. Sinisimpukkajauhon välttämättömien aminohappojen AID oli 66,3 ‒ 88,5 % alemmalla sinisimpukan lisäystasolla ja 71,8 ‒ 87,6 % ylemmällä sinisimpukkatasolla. Lysiinin ja metioniinin AID oli parempi ylemmällä sinisimpukkatasolla. Aminohappojen endogeeninen perustason eritys oli tavanomaista suurempi tässä kokeessa, joten sinisimpukkajauhon aminohappojen SID:n laskemiseen käytettiin kolmen muun ICOPP-projektin sulavuuskokeen endogeenisen erityksen keskiarvoja. Koska aminohappojen AID:n hajonta oli suurta alemmalla sinisimpukkatasolla, SID-arvot laskettiin käyttämällä ainoastaan suuremman sinisimpukkatason havaintoja. Sinisimpukkajauhon välttämättömien aminohappojen SID -arvot olivat 80,9 ‒ 92,5 %. Lysiinin SID oli 89,7 %, metioniinin 89,1 %, kystiinin 71,3 %, treoniinin 80,9 % ja valiinin 89,7 %. Tulokset osoittavat sinisimpukkajauhon sisältävän lähes kalajauhon veroisesti aminohappoja, mutta niiden sulavuus ei ole yhtä hyvä kuin kalajauhossa. Tärkeimpien aminohappojen sulavuus on verrattavissa soijarouheeseen. Sinisimpukkajauhon runsas käyttö aiheutti ripulia porsaille ja Ruotsissa samalla erällä tehdyssä kokeessa myös broilereille. Käyttömäärää pienennettäessä ripulia ei ollut. Sinisimpukkajauhon käyttö rehuna edellyttää lainsäädännön muutoksia ja tuotannon taloudellisuus tulisi myös selvittää

The selection of animals for improved performance affects the profitability of pig fattening and has environmental consequences. The goal of this paper was to examine how changes in genetic and market parameters impact the biophysical (feeding patterns, timing of slaughter, nitrogen excretion) and economic (return per pig space unit) results describing pig fattening in a Finnish farm. The analysis can be viewed as focusing on terminal line breeding goals. An integrated model using recursive stochastic dynamic programming and a biological pig growth model was used to estimate biophysical results and economic values. Combining these models allowed us to provide more accurate estimates for the value of genetic improvement and, thus, provide better feedback to animal breeding programs than the traditional approach, which is based on fixed management patterns. Besides the benchmark scenario, the results were simulated for 5 other scenarios. In each scenario, genotype was improved regarding daily growth potential, carcass lean meat content, or the parameters of the Gompertz growth curve (maturing rate [], adult weight of protein [α], and adult weight of lipid mass []). The change in each parameter was equal to approximately 1 SD genetic improvement (ceteris paribus). Increasing , , daily growth potential, or carcass lean meat content increased the return on pig space unit by €12.60, €7.60, €4.10, or €2.90 per year, respectively, whereas an increase in decreased the return by €3.10. The genetic improvement in and resulted in the highest decrease in nitrogen excretion calculated in total or per kilogram of carcass gain but only under the optimal feeding pattern. Simulated changes in the Gompertz growth function parameters imply greater changes in ADG and lean meat content than changes in scenarios focusing on improving ADG and lean meat content directly. The economic value of genetic improvements as well as the quantity of nitrogen excreted during the fattening period largely depends on feeding. Improved genotypes can require changes in pig management pattern. Estimating the influence of the genotype on the nitrogen excretion without considering changes in the management pattern can result in flawed conclusions. To improve overall economic performance and to decrease the environmental footprint of fattening pig production, the pig producer can adjust the herd management pattern according to the pigs' genetics.

The study compared properties of Finnish Landrace×Yorkshire crossbred sows mated with Finnish Landrace (FL), Norwegian Landrace (NL), Norwegian Duroc×Norwegian Landrace (NDL), or Swedish Hampshire (SH) boars. The focus was to study the cross-sectional area of loin, cross-sectional area and number of muscle fibres, loin colour and pH value as well as the ratio of water to protein in the loin. The four studied crosses were quite similar having only small differences in carcass and meat quality. The carcass lean content was the lowest in NDL. The loins of FL and NL were longer than the loins of NDL and of SH. The cross-sectional area of loin was the largest in SH. The loin of FL was lighter in colour and the loin of SH was redder than the loins of the other crosses studied. The protein content was lower and the ratio of water to protein higher in loin of SH than in the other crosses.

Emakon pahnuekoko vaihtelee suuresti, ja pahnuekoon kasvaessa myös kuolleena syntyneiden porsaiden lukumäärä kasvaa. Suurin osa elävänä syntyneiden porsaiden kuolemista tapahtuu ensimmäisten elinpäivien aikana. Pieni syntymäpaino ja heikko elinvoima lisäävät porsaan riskiä menehtyä ensimmäisten elinpäivien aikana joko emakon ruhjomana tai nälkiintymisen ja kylmettymisen seurauksena. Toisaalta pienikin porsas voi kasvaa normaalisti teurastukseen saakka, mutta isompana syntyneitä hitaammin. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää, miten pahnuekoko vaikuttaa porsaan syntymäpainoon ja sen hajontaan, ja mikä on syntymäpainon merkitys porsaan selviytymisen, kasvun ja teuraslaadun kannalta. Aineistona oli 59 norjanmaatiasrodun ensikkoa, jotka oli siemennetty duroc-karjuilla. Pahnueisiin syntyi yhteensä 665 porsasta, joista 45 syntyi kuolleena. Pahnueisiin syntyi keskimäärin 11,5 porsasta, joista 10,5 elävänä. Pahnueen porsaiden keskimääräinen syntymäpaino pieneni 45 g ja pahnueen pienimmän porsaan paino 81 g pahnuekoon kasvaessa porsaalla. Samalla myös syntymäpainojen variaatiokerroin suureni. Porsaan syntymäpainon ja kasvunopeuden välillä oli positiivinen korrelaatio. Syntymäpainon ja kasvun välinen yhteys on luonnollisesti suurin, kun porsaan ravinnon saanti on emakon tuottaman maidon varassa (r = 0,45, P < 0,001). Syntymäpainon ja kasvunopeuden välinen yhteys heikkeni porsaan kasvaessa, mutta vaikutti kuitenkin päiväkasvuun syntymästä teurastukseen saakka (r = 0,35, P < 0,001). Pieni syntymäpaino lisäsi porsaan riskiä menehtyä kasvatuksen aikana. Enintään 1 kg painoisina syntyneistä porsaista 37 % kuoli kasvatusaikana, ja näistä suurin osa jo ennen välitystä. Elävänä syntyneiden porsaiden kuolleisuus pieneni porsaiden syntymäpainon kasvaessa. Porsaan vieroituspaino ja kasvu ennen vieroitusta suurenivat lineaarisesti syntymäpainon kasvaessa. Syntymäpainon lisäksi imevien porsaiden kasvuun ja vieroituspainoon vaikutti emakon imettämien porsaiden lukumäärä. Kasvu hidastui ja vieroituspaino pieneni imetettävien porsaiden lukumäärän kasvaessa. Syntymäpainon ja välikasvatusajan kasvun välillä havaittiin käyräviivainen yhteys, kuten myös kasvussa syntymästä välitykseen. Kun analysointiin otettiin mukaan vain ongelmitta teurastukseen asti kasvaneet siat, emakon imettämien porsaiden lukumäärä vaikutti myös näiden vaiheiden kasvuun. Porsaan syntymäpainolla ei ollut kuitenkaan merkitsevää vaikutusta lihasikojen kasvuun. Sen sijaan syntymän ja teurastuksen välisen päiväkasvun välillä oli positiivinen yhteys ja elinikäinen päiväkasvu suureni lineaarisesti syntymäpainon kasvaessa. Syntymäpainolla oli käyräviivainen vaikutus sikojen teurastusikään, ja vaikutus oli erilainen tanskalaisen ja norjalaisen duroc-isälinjan jälkeläisissä. Tanskalaisen durocin jälkeläisillä pienimmät syntymäpainot pidensivät teurastusikää voimakkaammin kuin norjalaisen durocin jälkeläisillä Syntymäpaino ei kuitenkaan vaikuttanut merkitsevästi ruhon tai sen osien (kinkku, selkä, kylki, lapa) lihaprosenttiin. Tulosten perusteella porsaan syntymäpainolla on merkitystä porsaan selviytymisen ja kasvun kannalta. Syntymäpainon vaikutus on suurin imetyksen ja välikasvatuksen aikana, mutta se näkyy myös sikojen kasvunopeudessa syntymästä teurastukseen. Enintään kilon painoisilla porsailla on suurin riski menehtyä kasvatusaikana. Ne myös kasvavat porsasvaiheessa hitaasti ja selviävät harvemmin koko kasvatusajan ongelmitta teurastukseen saakka. Syntymäpaino vaikuttaa porsaiden kasvuun syntymästä välitykseen, muttei enää lihasikojen kasvuun. Pahnue- ja välikasvatusajan hitaammasta kasvusta johtuen siat saavuttavat teuraspainotavoitteen vanhempina. Syntymäpaino ei kuitenkaan vaikuta ruhojen lihakkuuteen.

This study investigated the effect of dietary protein supply on growth performance, carcass composition and size of organs in pigs slaughtered at the age of 165 ± 2 d. In addition, we analysed muscle fibre properties and glycolytic potential of light muscles longissimus lumborum (LD), semimembranosus (SM), and gluteus superficialis (GS), and dark muscles infraspinatus (IS) and masseter (M) of 20 gilts and 20 barrows. Of these pigs, 16 were Finnish Landrace, 16 were Finnish Yorkshire, and 8 were crosses of these breeds. The pigs were fed low-or high-protein diets formulated to contain 6.0 and 9.5 g of apparent ileal digestible lysine/feed unit (1 fu = 9.3 MJ NE), respectively. The pigs were fed according to a restricted weight-based feeding scale (13–30 MJ NE/d). Lean meat, fat, bones, and skin of the carcasses as well as organs were dissected and weighed. The pH value was measured 45 min post mortem from LD, and 24 h post mortem from LD, SM and GS. Drip loss, lightness (L⁎) and redness (a⁎) were measured from LD, SM and GS. Pigs with a low-protein supply showed a lower growth rate (P 0.05). We found no such differences in the dark muscles studied. We also took into account the effect of both the breed and sex on the studied properties. The low-protein diet increased glycolytic potential in porcine LD and SM, and decreased the pH value measured 45 min post mortem from LD. The dietary protein supply affected no other meat quality traits studied. A more rapid drop in pH in LD resulted in a lighter and less red meat with higher drip loss.

In 2000, EU regulations for organic animal production set new guidelines for organic pig feeding requiring that this be based on mainly home-grown organic feedstuffs. Doubts were however raised whether these feeding regimes can maintain good growth performance and carcass quality of pigs. Three experiments were carried out to study different organic feeding regimes in weaned piglets and fattening pigs. In Experiment 1, we evaluated the use of peas and faba beans (0, 120, or 240 g kg-1) in diets for weaned piglets. Piglets fed pea diets performed as well as those fed the control diet, whereas the highest faba bean level resulted in reduced feed intake and growth performance. In Experiment 2, we studied the replacement (0, 33, or 67%) of rapeseed cake with blue lupins in fattening pig diets. The dietary lupin level had a quadratic effect on the weight gain of growing pigs, the best performance being observed at the 33% replacement level. However, dietary lupin level did not influence weight gain during the finishing period and total fattening. Back fat became softer with increasing dietary lupin levels. In Experiment 3, different protein supplements were compared in organic diets from weaning to slaughter. In two-phase feeding, the best performance was observed when whey protein was used as the protein supplement, followed by soya bean cake + whey protein and rapeseed cake + fish meal. The effects of a one-phase organic feeding regime with cold-pressed rapeseed cake + whey protein did not differ from those of the two-phase organic feeding regimes. Fattening pigs fed organic diets required from two to seven days longer to reach slaughter weight than those fed conventional diets. Pigs fed organic diets had fatter carcasses, but the eating quality of organic pork did not differ from that of pork from pigs fed conventional diets. Feed costs and the circulation rate of pigs, weaners in particular, were greater and carcass prices lower in the organic feeding regimes than in the conventional ones., Vuonna 2000 voimaan tulleet EU:n luonnonmukaisen kotieläintuotannon säädökset muuttivat luonnonmukaisestituotettavien sikojen ruokintaa. Sikojen ruokinnan tuli perustua pääasiassa tilalla luonnonmukaisesti tuotettuihin rehuihin, tavanomaisesti tuotettujen rehujen käyttöä rajoitettiin ja puhtaiden aminohappojen käyttö kiellettiin. Uudet säädökset herättivät epäilyjä siitä, säilyvätkö luomusikojen hyvä kasvu ja ruhon laatu myös uusien säädösten mukaisilla ruokinnoilla. Kolmessa kokeessa selvitettiin luonnonmukaisen tuotannon säädösten mukaisten ruokintavaihtoehtojen vaikutuksia porsaiden ja lihasikojen tuotantotuloksiin sekä sianlihan syöntilaatuun. Ensimmäisessä kokeessa tutkittiin herneen ja härkäpavun käyttömäärän (0, 120 tai 240 g/kg rehua) vaikutusta vieroitettujen porsaiden kasvuun ja rehun hyväksikäyttöön. Herneruokinnoilla olleet porsaat kasvoivat yhtä hyvin kuin kontrolliryhmän porsaat. Sen sijaan suurin härkäpapumäärä pienensi rehun kulutusta ja hidasti kasvua. Myös kasvun hajonta oli herne- ja papuruokinnoilla suurempi kuin kontrolliryhmässä. Toisessa lihasikojen kasvatuskokeessa korvattiin luomuruokintojen rypsipuristeesta 0, 33 tai 67 % sinilupiinilla. Alkukasvatuksessa sikojen kasvu oli luomuruokinnoilla paras, kun kolmannes rypsistä oli korvattu tutkimuskeskuslupiinilla, mutta suurempi määrä lupiinia hidasti kasvua. Loppukasvatuksen ja koko kokeen aikaiseen kasvuun lupiinin osuus ei vaikuttanut. Lupiinin osuuden suuretessa sikojen selkäsilava pehmeni. Kolmannessa kasvatuskokeessa tutkittiin erilaisten valkuaistäydennysten vaikutusta sikojen kasvuun ja rehuhyötysuhteeseen sekä ruhon ja lihan laatuun luomuruokinnoilla vieroituksesta teurastukseen. Kaksivaiheisilla luomuruokinnoilla sikojen kasvu oli paras, kun kotoisia rehuja täydennettiin heravalkuaisella, seuraavaksi paras, kun valkuaistäydennyksenä olivat soijapuriste ja heravalkuaisjauhe, ja huonoin, kun valkuaistäydennyksenä olivat rypsipuriste ja kalajauho. Kylmäpuristettua rypsiä ja heravalkuaisjauhetta sisältäneellä yksivaiheruokinnalla olleiden sikojen kasvu ei eronnut muista kaksivaiheisista luomuruokinnoista. Luomuruokinnoilla olleiden lihasikojen kasvatusaika oli kahdesta seitsemään päivään pidempi tavanomaiseen ruokintaan verrattuna. Luomuruokinnoilla olleiden sikojen ruhot olivat rasvaisempia kuin tavanomaisella ruokinnalla, mutta sianlihan syöntilaadussa ei ollut eroja. Luomuruokinnoilla rehukustannus ja sikojen kiertonopeus olivat suurempia ja ruhon arvo pienempi kuin tavanomaisella ruokinnalla.

Two experiments were carried out to study the effects of using the new faba bean (Vicia faba L.) cultivar Kontu as a domestic protein source for growing-finishing pigs.In Experiment 1,120 pigs were used with a body weight (BW)of 25–110 kg to study the effects of replacing 0, 25, 50, 75,and 100%of rapeseed meal with faba beans in barley +rapeseed meal based diets. Restrictedly fed grower and finisher diets contained 137–317 and 114–260 g kg–1 faba beans, respectively. A barley +soya bean meal based diet was included as a control. The replacement of rapeseed meal with faba beans exerted a quadratic effect on daily weight gain and on the feed conversion ratio of pigs in the growing period and during total fattening (P, Härkäpapu (Vicia faba L.) on palkokasvi,joka on siementen melko suuren valkuaispitoisuuden (raakavalkuaista 300 g kg–1 kuiva-ainetta)vuoksi potentiaalinen soijaa korvaava kotimainen valkuaisrehu. Kahdessa kasvatuskokeessa selvitettiin uuden Kontu härkä papulajikkeen sopivuutta lihasikojen valkuaisrehuksi ja härkä papuruokintojen vaikutusta lihan laatuun.Ensimmäisessä kasvatuskokeessa verrattiin ohra-soijarouhe- ja ohra-rypsirouhepohjaisia ruokintoja ohra-rypsirouhe-härkä papuruokintoihin, joissa rypsirouheesta 25, 50, 75 tai 100 % korvattiin härkäpavulla. Alkukasvatusrehuissa oli 137–317 ja loppukasvatusrehuissa 114–260 g/kg papua. Kokeessa oli 120 lihasikaa, jotka kasvatettiin pareittain 25 kg alkupainosta 110 kg loppupainoon. Korvattaessa 75–100 % rypsirouhetta härkä pavulla sikojen päivä kasvu ja rehuhyötysuhde huononivat alkukasvatuksessa verrattuna ohra-soijarouhe- ja hra-rypsirouhepohjaisiin ruokintoihin. Rehun syönti pieneni, kun rypsi korvattiin kokonaan härkä pavulla. Loppukasvatuksessa sikojen päivä kasvussa ja rehuhyötysuhteessa ei ollut eroja erilaisten ruokintojen välillä. Koko kasvatusajan päiväkasvu ja rehuhyötysuhde oli paras, kun 50 % rypsirouheesta korvattiin härkä pavulla. Tällä ruokinnalla siat kasvoivat paremmin kuin ohra-rypsirouheruokinnalla, ja rehuhyötysuhde oli parempi kuin ohra-rypsirouhe- tai ohra-soijarouheruokinnalla. Selkä lihaksen pH oli 24 h teurastuksesta korkeampi ohra-härkä papu- kuin ohra-soijarouheruokinnoilla, mutta lihan värissä ei havaittu eroja. Tulosten perusteella härkä papua suositellaan lihasikojen alkukasvatusrehuun korkeintaan 200 g/kg, sillä suuremmat määrät voivat huonontaa kasvua. Loppukasvatuksessa härkäpavun käytölle ei ole rajoitteita. Härkäpapu saattaa tummentaa lihan väriä, mutta tämä ilmiö vaatii lisätutkimusta.

Both digestibility and performance experiments were carried out to evaluate the nutritive value of triticale for growing-finishing pigs.In experiment 1,the apparent ileal and faecal digestibility of nutrients in barley (Hordeum vulgare cv.Viivi)and two triticale (Tritico secale cultivars, Moreno and Ulrika, were measured using six cannulated barrows with a body weight (BW)of 82-107 kg.In experiment 2,132 pigs were used over 25-100 kg BW to study the effects of replacing barley in a barley-soyabean meal-based diet with graded amounts of triticale cv.Moreno (25,50,75,or 100%) and cv.Ulrika (50 or 100%).The apparent ileal and faecal digestibilities of dry matter and organic matter were higher for both triticale cultivars than for barley (P 0.05).The apparent ileal digestibility of lysine averaged 65.6, 70.8, and 70.5% for barley and triticale cv.Moreno and Ulrika,respectively.The net energy content of triticales (11.5 MJ kg-1 DM)was 0.4 MJ kg -1 DM higher than that of barley.The replacement of barley with the triticale cultivars Moreno and Ulrika exerted a positive quadratic effect on daily weight gain and the feed conversion ratio of pigs from 50 to 100 kg and from 25 to 100 kg BW (P, Ruisvehnä lajikkeiden Ulrika ja Moreno sekä ohralajikkeen Viivi ravintoaineiden ohutsuoli-ja kokonaissulavuudet selvitettiin kuudella ohutsuolikanyloidulla leikkosialla 82-107 kg elopainoisina. An experiment was conducted with 192 growing and finishing pigs in order to evaluate the phosphorus (P) requirement of the pigs and the efficacy of Aspergillus niger phytase on a barley based diet, and to study phase feeding of P and phytase. The performance of the pigs and certain chemical and physical parameters of their tibia and fibula bones were used as criteria for the effectiveness of the treatments. The variables in diet formulation were microbial phytase addition of 500 FTU kg−1 (‐/+ ) and three P levels—high (HP), medium (MP) and low (7.7, 6.1 and 4.5 g of total P kg−1 dry matter, respectively). Two additional diets were combinations of the former: MP—LP—and MP + LP —. The medium P level was sufficient for the pigs from 30 kg up to slaughter at 100 kg with the growth level of 900 g day and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of 2.60, but the lowest P level led to an impaired average daily gain (ADG) and FCR. The effect of a thermotolerant 6-phytase produced by Trichoderma reesei on performance and apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of P and Ca was evaluated in 192 weaned piglets (randomized block design; 16 replicates; 2 piglets each). Diets based on wheat (Triticum aestivum), barley (Hordeum vulgare), oat (Avena sativa), soybean (Glycine max) meal, and whey protein with adequate [positive control (PC)] or reduced [negative control (NC)] Ca and P levels were fed for 46 d after weaning. The PC and NC diets contained 8.0 and 6.4 g/kg Ca and 2.9 and 1.9 g/kg digestible P, respectively. Pelleted diets contained 0, 500, or 1000 phytase units (FTU)/kg. Growth performance and G:F were measured during starter (25 d) and weaner pig (21 d) periods. The ATTD of Ca and P was determined by spot sampling at the end of the weaner pig period (8 pens per treatment over 5 consecutive d). Data were analyzed using a mixed model with random block effect and fixed effect of dietary P and phytase level and their interaction. Dietary P level did not affect ADG or G:F of piglets over the entire feeding period (P0.10) whereas phytase increased G:F (P0.05). During the starter period, phytase linearly enhanced (P0.05) ADG (258, 266, and 292 g) and G:F (639, 677, and 664 g gain/kg feed DM) without further increase in the weaner pig period (P0.10). A P × phytase interaction (P0.05) was observed for ATTD of P, more so for NC (48, 61, and 68%, respectively) than PC diets (52, 62, and 61%). The ATTD of Ca was higher (P0.05) for PC than NC diets (68 vs. 58%) and increased quadratically by phytase (61, 65, and 63%). In conclusion, the phytase tested enhanced piglet performance during the postweaning period and increased ATTD of P and Ca.

The present study was carried out to determine the effect of two microbial phytases, Aspergillus niger (FINASEâ FP-500, 291 PU (phytase units)/g) and Trichoderma reesei phytase (FINASEâ P, 5880 PU/g) on phosphorus (P) and calcium (Ca) utilisation and ileal P and Ca digestibility in broiler chickens fed diets based on maize and soybean meal. A total of 96 Ross broiler chickens housed four birds to a cage were used. Four dietary treatments consisted of a positive control supplemented with dicalcium phosphate (17 g/kg), a negative control without inorganic P, basal diet without inorganic P supplemented with Aspergillus niger phytase (2.6 g/kg) and basal diet without inorganic P supplemented with Trichoderma reesei phytase (0.13 g/kg). Both phytases provided 750 PU/kg feed. P retention per unit intake was lowest and P excretion highest in birds fed the positive control diet with inorganic P (P, Sulavuus- ja tasekokeessa selvitettiin kahden erilaisen fytaasientsyymilisäyksen vaikutuksiamaissi-soijarouherehuseosta saaneiden broilereiden fosforin hyväksikäyttöön ja eritykseen. Kokeessa oli 96 broilerpoikasta, joiden ikä kokeen alussa oli 21 ja lopussa 37 vuorokautta. Broilereita pidettiin kolmikerroksisessa häkkipatterissa neljän eläimen häkeissä. Rakeistetun koerehun pääasiallisina raaka-aineina olivat maissi ja soijarouhe. Two hundred and forty piglets were used in a 2 x 6 factorial experiment to study the effects of weaning age (26 or 36 d) and four formic acid-based feed additives on the performance of pigs from weaning to slaughter. Either formic acid (F) or a mixture of formic acid, propionic acid, and potassium sorbate (FPS) or a mixture of formic acid, propionic acid, and sodium benzoate (FPB) or formic acid in a diatomaceous earth carrier (FD) were added to the diets of weaned piglets (from weaning to 60 d of age) and growing (18-46 kg) and finishing pigs (46-107 kg) to provide 8, 6, and 6 g acid per kg feed, respectively. The negative control treatment's (C) diets contained no growth promoters, whereas the positive control treatment's weaner and grower diets were supplemented with 40 mg/kg of avilamycin (A). The piglets weaned at the age of 26 and 36 d weighed 7.6 and 10.7 kg at weaning (p0.001), and 18.5 and 17.9 kg at the age of 60 d (p0.05), respectively. There was a weaning age x feed additive interaction in the weight gain of piglets after weaning (p0.05). The weight gain of piglets weaned on day 26 was enhanced by A, FPS, and FD (p0.05), and that of piglets weaned on day 36 by A and FPB (p0.05). The feed conversion ratio was not affected by weaning ages but was decreased in groups A, F, FBS, and FPB (p0.05). The severity of post-weaning diarrhoea was less in groups A, F, FPS, and FD than in C (p0.05). In piglets weaned on day 26, faecal water content and the total Escherichia coli count were highest 9 d after weaning. The total E. coli count was reduced only by FD (p0.05). Increased faecal water content was characterized by increased faecal Na+ and decreased K+ concentrations. Weaning age did not influence performance or carcass quality in the growing-finishing pigs. Feed additives did not affect weight gain in the growing pigs, but FPS and FPB enhanced weight gain during finishing period and total fattening (p0.05). In summary, the pigs' growth performance from weaning to slaughter was not affected by weaning age but it was enhanced by mixtures of formic and propionic acids with small amounts of sorbate or benzoate.

Three 2 x 4 factorial experiments were carried out from August to September with 30 juvenile male mink, 24 raccoon dogs, and 24 blue foxes to investigate the effect of dietary glycine supply (low or high) on the efficiency of these species to excrete hippuric acid with incremental benzoate intake (0, 1, 2, or 4 mmol/kg BW). For mink, two additional treatments with 1 or 2 mmol/kg BW of ethyl benzoate were included. A basal low-glycine diet was formulated to meet the minimum protein requirements of fur animals (30% of ME). This diet was supplemented with 0 or 3 g/kg of glycine, or with 0, 1.0, 2.07, or 4.15 g/kg of sodium benzoate for mink and blue foxes, and with 0 or 4.5 g/kg of glycine and 0, 1.58, 3.17, or 6.34 g/kg of sodium benzoate for raccoon dogs, respectively. Two additional diets with .76 or 1.53 g/kg of ethyl benzoate were made for mink. Fecal and urinary benzoic and hippuric acid excretion were measured for 3 d. The 24-h recovery of [14C]benzoic acid injected intraperitoneally was measured from urine, the liver, and the kidneys. All animals appeared healthy and no clinical signs of benzoate overdose were observed. Dietary benzoate level did not affect ADFI or ADG in any species. Glycine supplementation lowered ADFI in mink. The majority of ingested benzoates were absorbed from the gut (over 95%), except in blue foxes, which excreted 6 to 15% of ingested benzoates in feces with incremental increases in benzoate intake. Urinary free benzoic acid excretion accounted for 10% of the ingested benzoates in blue foxes but less than 5% in mink and raccoon dogs. When benzoate intake was 1 mmol/kg BW, mink, blue foxes, and raccoon dogs excreted 71, 77, and 34% of ingested benzoates as hippuric acid in urine, respectively. With higher benzoate intakes, urinary hippuric acid excretion decreased quadratically with mink to 20%, and linearly with blue foxes and raccoon dogs to 45 and 16%, respectively. The hippuric acid pathway appears to be the principal route of benzoate elimination in the mink and blue fox, whereas, in the raccoon dog, other pathways appear to be more important. In mink, the elimination of ethyl benzoate did not differ from that of sodium benzoate. Because glycine conjugation is the primary route of benzoate elimination, it is recommended that benzoate content in fur animal feeds should not exceed 1 g/kg feed on an as-fed basis.

Six barrows, with an average initial body weight of 88 kg, were used in a digestibility and balance experiment to study the nutritive value of meat and bone meal (MBM). The MBM, which contained 478 g crude protein and 322 g ash/kg dry matter (DM), was included in barley-based diets at two levels: 100 and 200 g/kg. The experiment was conducted according to a two-period reversal design. The apparent digestibilities of organic matter, crude protein and crude fat in the MBM were 0.910, 0.909 and 0.730, respectively. The MBM was calculated to contain 434 g digestible crude protein, 14.26 MJ metabolizable energy and 8.82 MJ net energy/kg DM. The efficiency of nitrogen utilization decreased with an increasing MBM supply. Due to relatively high mineral intakes, the apparent digestibilities of calcium and phosphorus remained low.

One of the aims in domestic pig breeding has been to increase the size of litters resulting in variation in birth weight of piglets. Pig breeding has also resulted in increased body muscle mass. Muscles with the same size can consist either of large number of thin muscle fibres or small number of thick muscle fibres. Larger body muscle content means that in living animal the heart must pump blood to larger muscle mass than earlier. Our interest in this study was to investigate the relationship between the pig’s birth weight and (i) growth performance and carcass composition, (ii) the size of organs, and (iii) the mean muscle fibre cross-sectional area at slaughter. The study consisted of twenty pigs slaughtered at the age of 165±2 days. The day after the slaughter, the carcass composition was determined by dissecting the chilled carcass into lean, fat, bones, and skin and organs were weighed. The average cross sectional area of muscle fibres was determined from three fast-twitch muscles longissimus dorsi, semimembranosus, gluteus superficialis, and two slow-twitch muscles infraspinatus and masseter. The birth weight of pigs ranged from 0.9 to 2.2 kg. We found no clear relationships between the birth weight and the pig’s growth performance from birth to slaughter. When the birth weight increased the heart weight at slaughter increased as well (P < 0.01). The heart weight was higher in those pigs with high carcass weight (P < 0.05) and with the high weight of total muscle mass in the carcass (P < 0.001). The cross sectional area of muscle fibres in M. longissimus dorsi (P < 0.05), M. semimembranosus (P < 0.10), and M. gluteus superficialis (P < 0.05) was larger in those pigs with low birth weight compared to those found in pigs with high birth weight., Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin sikojen syntymäpainonyhteyttä niiden (i) kasvuun ja ruhon koostumukseen, (ii) elinten painoon ja (iii) lihassolujen paksuuteen teurasiässä. Tutkimus toteutettiin siten, että kaksikymmentä syntymäpainoltaan keskimäärin 1,6 kg:n painoista sikaa teurastettiin 165:n ±2 päivän ikäisinä. Sikojen elopaino oli teurastettaessa keskimäärin 107,6 kg ja ruhopaino 85,5 kg. Vuorokausi teurastuksen jälkeen jäähdytetyt ruhot leikattiin ja lihat, rasvat, sydän, maksa ja munuaiset punnittiin. Lihassolujen poikkipinta-ala mitattiin kolmesta vaaleasta ja kahdesta tummasta lihaksesta. Vaaleat lihakset olivat longissimus dorsi, semimembranosus ja gluteus superficialis ja tummat lihakset infraspinatus ja masseter. Tutkimuksessa syntymäpainolla ei havaittu olevan selkeää yhteyttä sian kasvuun eikä ruhon koostumukseen. Mitä painavampi eläin oli syntyessään, sitä suurempi oli sen sydän teurasiässä. Lihasmassan kasvaessa myös sydämen koko kasvoi. Maksan ja munuaisten painoon syntymäpaino ei vaikuttanut. Vaaleissa lihaksissa syntymäpainon ja lihassolujen keskimääräisen poikkipinta-alan välillä oli negatiivinen korrelaatio, eli samanikäisissä sioissa lihassolut olivat paksumpia syntymäpainoltaan pienemmillä kuin suuremmilla sioilla. Tummissa lihaksissa vastaavaa ei todettu.

The effects of the carbohydrate composition of finishing diet (fed from 80 to 107 kg of body weight) and the length of pre-slaughter fasting on pork quality were studied in a 2 × 2 factorial experiment with 80 crossbred pigs. The control finishing diet was based on barley and soybean meal, and the fibrous finishing diet was based on barley, barley fibre, faba beans, and rapeseed cake. These diets contained 465 and 362 g starch and 177 and 250 g dietary fibre per kg, respectively. The fasting times of 25 and 41 h were obtained by giving the pigs their last meal at different times. Longer fasting lowered the glycolytic potential of the longissimus lumborum muscle (P = 0.01), whereas the finishing diet had no effect. Different muscles responded differently to the treatments. Longer fasting increased the ultimate pH of the semimembranosus muscle (P = 0.02), but did not affect that of the longissimus lumborum and semispinalis capitis muscles. The finishing diets did not affect the ultimate pH of the investigated muscles. A diet × fasting time interaction was seen in the lightness of the semimembranosus muscle (P = 0.05). The fibrous diet resulted in darker meat than the control diet did in pigs that were fasted for 25 h (P < 0.05). Longer fasting darkened the meat colour in pigs fed the fibrous diet (P < 0.05) but not in those fed the control diet. The meat from the semispinalis capitis muscle was darker in pigs fed the fibrous than those fed the control diet (P = 0.04). The treatments did not affect the colour of the longissimus lumborum muscle. Longer fasting decreased drip loss from the meat of pigs fed the control diet (P < 0.05). The eating quality of the pork was not influenced by the finishing diets or the fasting time. The pigs also grew equally fast on both finishing diets. In conclusion, a moderate alteration in the carbohydrate composition of a finishing diet or longer pre-slaughter fasting can have some effects on pork quality in crossbred pigs, but these effects vary in different muscles., Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää 2 × 2 faktorikokeessa,miten loppukasvatusrehun hiilihydraattikoostumus ja teurastusta edeltävän paaston pituus vaikuttavat sianlihan laatuun. Lihasikojen kasvatuskokeessa 80 maatiais- ja yorkshirerotujen risteytyssikaa jaettiin pareittain, sukupuolet erikseen neljään koekäsittelyyn. Kontrollina olleessa ohra-soijarouhepohjaisessa loppukasvatusrehussa oli tärkkelystä 465 g/kg ja kuitua 177 g/kg. Kuitupitoisessa, ohraa, ohrakuitua, härkäpapua ja kylmäpuristettua rypsiä sisältäneessä loppukasvatusrehussa oli tärkkelystä 361 g/kg ja kuitua 250 g/kg. Loppukasvatusrehuja syötettiin 80 kilon elopainosta alkaen teurastukseen saakka eli noin neljä viikkoa. Teurastusta edeltäneet 25:n ja 41 tunnin paastot saatiin aikaan muuttamalla viimeisen rehuannoksen antamisajankohtaa. Kuljetus ja odotusaika teurastamossa olivat kaikilla sioilla samanlaiset. Siat kasvoivat kontrolliruokinnalla ja kuitupitoisella ruokinnalla yhtä nopeasti. Loppukasvatusrehu ja paaston pituus eivät vaikuttaneet ruhopainoon eivätkä lihaprosenttiin. Paaston pidentäminen pienensi ulkofileestä (M. longissimus lumborum) mitattua lihaksen glykolyyttistä potentiaalia, mutta ruokinta ei vaikuttanut siihen. Vaikka ruokinta ja paasto eivät muuttaneet ulkofileen loppupH- arvoa (24 tuntia teurastuksesta) tai väriä, pidempi paasto vähensi kudosnesteiden valumaa kontrollirehua syöneiden sikojen lihasta. Vaikka ruokinta ei vaikuttanut niskapaistin (M. semispinalis capitis) loppu-pH-arvoon, kuitupitoinen rehu tummensi sen väriä. Sen sijaan paaston pituudella ei ollut vaikutusta niskapaistin pH-arvoon eikä väriin. Loppukasvatuksen ruokinta ja paaston pituus eivät myöskään vaikuttaneet ulkofileestä määritettyyn lihan syöntilaatuun. Tulosten perusteella maltillinen loppukasvatusrehun tärkkelyspitoisuuden alentaminen ja kuitupitoisuuden lisääminen ja pitempi teurastusta edeltävä paasto voivat jossain määrin vaikuttaa tuoreen sianlihan laatuun, mutta vaikutukset ovat erilaisia eri lihaksissa.
