Parasitism is one the most common lifestyles on earth. Parasites are important components of virtually all ecological communities and parasite research can help to elucidate many aspects of the ecology of their hosts. This dissertation focused on studying the metazoan parasites of the California grunion, Leuresthes tenuis and other fish hosts in the family Atherinopsidae. In Chapter 1, the metazoan parasites of L. tenuis were investigated at five localities in southern California. A total of 2,902 parasites belonging to 26 taxa were recovered from 900 specimens of L. tenuis collected between 2016 and 2018. Comparisons of parasite communities showed that the parasite fauna of L. tenuis varied among localities. This variation suggests that L. tenuis may stay relatively close to their spawning grounds throughout their lives. In Chapter 2, a redescription is provided of the parasitic copepod Caligus olsoni, associated with L. tenuis and other fishes in the northeast Pacific. Caligus olsoni was morphologically compared to another species, Caligus serratus. In light of the morphological similarities observed between these two species, we propose to treat C. serratus as a junior subjective synonym of C. olsoni. Based on previous reports, C. olsoni appeared to be highly host-specific. However, with the proposed synonymy of C. olsoni and C. serratus, C. olsoni has, in fact, low host specificity, with 16 fish host species currently reported from 12 families. In Chapter 3, the parasite communities of L. tenuis and three other host species in the family Atherinopsidae were compared. A total of 5,677 parasites from 25 taxa were recovered from the four host species. The results showed significant differences in parasite communities in relation to host species. The three most abundant parasite taxa found in this study, which combined accounted for more than 78% of the total number of parasites recovered, were associated with two of the host species. Differences in parasite communities may be explained by variations in diet and feeding strategies among the hosts species investigated.

Cochicó belongs to “Encadenadas del Oeste” system of lakes being a typical water body of the Pampas region. The most abundant fish species in this lake is the pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis) valued due to the quality of its flesh and as a game fish. The aim of this study was to compare the gonadal stages of pejerrey during two consecutive spawning seasons (August to December) in relation to sexual steroids and temperature in this lake. In general, pejerrey gonadal development, the Gonadosomatic index and the plasma levels of estradiol and testosterone fluctuated in relation with temperature. In 2014 samplings, females started to ovulating in early August, with a peak during September-October and ending in December with many of them with atretic oocytes. However, in 2015, a marked delay in maturation was observed with ovulated fish only in October and December. This fact may be because the minors mean temperatures recorded in this year. For males, it was possible to find spermiating animals during the whole spawning season and only arrested animals in December. Unexpectedly, histological gonadal analysis revealed for the first time pejerrey with testis-ova, probably due to the intensive use of agrochemicals in this region. Fil: del Fresno, Pamela Sabrina. Gómez lake (34 ° 39 ‘S 61 ° 01’ W) is a typical shallow lake of Pampas region placed in the upper area of the Salado river. The most abundant fi sh species in this lake is the pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis) valued due to the quality of its fl esh and its attractiveness as a game fi sh. The aim of this study was to describe for the fi rst time in this pejerrey wild population the gonadal stages during three consecutive spawning seasons (August to December) in relation with sexual steroids and temperature in this lake. In general, pejerrey gonadal development, the gonadosomatic index and the plasma levels of estradiol and testosterone varied in relation to air t emperature. During the sampling period, pejerrey females started to ovulate in early August (winter), with a peak in October and ending in December with some of them with atretic oocytes. For males, it was possible to fi nd spermiating animals during the whole spawning season and some arrested animals only in December. Some species of fish have been used as bioindicators of aquatic environmental pollution all over the world. Pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis) was selected for the current study due to its sensitivity to pollutants and because is one of the emblematic fish species that inhabits shallow lakes of the Pampa region (Argentina). Recently, in Chascomus lake were recorded concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn with values above the Argentine National Guidelines for the Protection of the Aquatic life. Regarding this, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of environmental concentrations of these metals on the sperm quality, fertilization and hatching rates, and embryo and larval survival of pejerrey. Also, the same endpoints were analyzed with concentrations ten times higher to simulate a polluted worst-case scenario. The results showed that the presence of some metals in aquatic environments reduced pejerrey sperm motility (in ~50%) and velocity (in ~30%). These results were obtained using a computer assisted sperm analyzer enforcing the application of this analysis as a tool or bioindicator of aquatic pollution. In addition, fertilization rate was diminished (in ~40%) for all treatments. Besides, the hatching rate, and embryo and larval survival were drastically affected being zero for the highest metal concentrations assessed. All together these results, showed that even lower metal concentrations can negatively affect different reproductive parameters of one of the most emblematic fish species of the Argentinean water bodies.

In South America, the order Atheriniformes includes the monophyletic genus Odontesthes with 20 species that inhabit freshwater, estuarine and coastal environments. Pejerrey Odontesthes argentinensis is widely distributed in coastal and estuarine areas of the Atlantic Ocean and is known to foray into estuaries of river systems, particularly in conditions of elevated salinity. However, to our knowledge, a landlocked self‐sustaining population has never been recorded. In this study, we examined the pejerrey population of Salada de Pedro Luro Lake (south‐east of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina) to clarify its taxonomic identity. An integrative taxonomic analysis based on traditional meristic, landmark‐based morphometrics and genetic techniques suggests that the Salada de Pedro Luro pejerrey population represents a novel case of physiological and morphological adaptation of a marine pejerrey species to a landlocked environment and emphasises the environmental plasticity of this group of fishes Fil: Colautti, Dario César. "A series of crater lakes exist in the central region of Puebla, Mexico; each one with an endemic species of silverside fishes, with no information about their ecology. Poblana letholepis is an endemic species to the Crater Lake La Preciosa and under human and physical pressure endangering its presence. The weight–length relationship of both sexes and juveniles were not statistically different, and their feeding habits are similar between sexes and juveniles as well as to other species of the same family."

Some heavy metals related to human activities were measured in the water of Chascomús lake. The maximum concentrations were: 0.23 μg/L for Cd, 4.28 μg/L for Cr, 22.09 μg/L for Cu, 2.49 μg/L for Ni, 3.24 μg/L for Pb and 210.76 μg/L for Zn. The values of Cd, Cr, Cr, Pb and Zn were above the Argentine National Guidelines for the Protection of the Aquatic life. The analysis of gonadal condition of pejerrey fish (Odontesthes bonariensis) from this lake did not revealed any reproductive damages. However, exposures with environmental concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn under laboratory conditions of pejerrey males (14 days), caused a significant increase of the expression of the three variants of gnrh in the brain (within Cd exposure) and a decrease in cyp19a1b mRNA (within Cu exposure). Furthermore, at pituitary level, a decrease in fshb transcript levels was observed in the fish exposed to Cd and Cr and a decrease in the expression of both gonadotropin receptors at gonadal level in Zn exposure. Moreover, the gonads of the fish exposed to all the tested metals suffered structural damages showing shortness of the spermatic lobules, fibrosis, testis ova and the presence of piknotic cells. All these findings alert that heavy metals pollution affects the expression of key reproductive genes and gonadal structure of fish species that represent the predominant group of organisms and are considered sentinel species in the aquatic ecosystems. Specimens of Brazilian silverside (Atherinella brasiliensis, n=9672) with a length range of 1.5 to 14.2 cm were captured in the intertidal areas of the Estuarine Complex of Paranaguá, Brazil, between August 2010 and July 2011. The species’ weight-length relationship was represented by the equation W=0.00533 L3.136 with a slightly positive allometry (b>3) and could be divided into two growth stanzas: W = W1 + W2; Stanza 1: W1= SW. (0.005239 L3.152); Stanza 2: W2= (1 - SW). (0.000699 L3.913); Switch-Function: SW = [1 + e1.204 (L - 11.66)]-1. The breakpoint between the first and second stanza (11.66 cm) matches published values for the estimated size at first maturity of adult females. Frequency distributions indicate that the species is present in the shallow areas of the Estuarine Complex of Paranaguá during all phases of its ontogenetic development, with the recruitment of juveniles taking place between October and November. Modal displacement was monitored throughout 12 months. The von Bertalanffy growth model and longevity was estimated as follow: asymptotic length (L∞) of 17.5 cm, growth coefficient (K) of 0.89 (year-1) and longevity (A95) of 3.33 years. We present some considerations with regard to the general methodology for adjusting weight-length relationships.

Specimens presently identified as belonging to Odontesthes perugiae species group from rio Parana, rio Uruguay and rio Negro in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay are revised. Two species are recognized: Odontesthes perugiae , type species of the genus with Odontesthes orientalis as a junior synonym, and a new species described herein. Odontesthes perugiae is redescribed and its distribution restricted to the lower rio Parana, lower rio Uruguay and rio Negro basins. The new species is endemic from the upper rio Uruguay above Salto do Yucuma (Brazil) or Saltos del Mocona (Argentina) falls. Both species share with the remaining taxa included in the O. perugiae species-group ( O. bicudo , O. ledae , O. mirinensis , and O. piquava ) the possession of teeth of the outer row on dentary and premaxilla shorter than those in the inner row, being distinguished from them by the number of gill rakers, body measurements and some osteological characters.

Keys are provided for the identification of the nematode species known to be parasites of Canadian fishes. The nematodes are described and illustrated, with a note of the site(s) they occupy in named fish host(s) and their geographical distribution. Parasite records are given by author and date, full details of which can be found in a bibliography of over 800 references. Diagnoses and keys for 22 Families, 47 genera and 88 species of nematodes are also given, together with a glossary of terms, a host-parasite list, and indices to both nematode parasites and hosts.

Microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized for the endemic fish Chirostoma humboldtianum using an enrichment procedure. Eight polymorphic microsatellites were genotyped for 32 - 48 individuals from Tepuxtepec Dam, Michoacán. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 3 to 11 and the average observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.61 and 0.63, respectively. All loci deviated significantly from Hardy-Weinberg expectations, which might be related to small population sizes associated to human disturbances and habitat loss. These are the first loci described for the species and the genus and could be useful in studies of population genetics, conservation and management of the species.

Atherinopsidae are widespread freshwater and shallow marine fish with singular economic importance. Morphological, genetical and life cycles differences between marine and estuarine populations were already reported in this family, suggesting ongoing speciation. Also, coexistence and interbreeding between closely related species were documented. The aim of this study was to infer boundaries among: (A) Odontesthes bonariensis and O. argentinensis at species level, and intermediate morphs; (B) the population of O. argentinensis of Mar Chiquita Lagoon and its marine conspecifics. To achieve this, we integrated, meristic, Geometrics Morphometrics and DNA Barcode approaches. Four groups were discriminated and subsequently characterized according to their morphological traits, shape and meristic characters. No shared haplotypes between O. bonariensis and O. argentinensis were found. Significative-meristic and body shape differences between the Mar Chiquita and marine individuals of O. argentinensis were found, suggesting they behave as well differentiated populations, or even incipient ecological species. The fact that the Odontesthes morphotypes shared haplotypes with both, O. argentinensis and O. bonariensis, but also possess meristic and morphometric distinctive traits open new questions related to the origin of this morphogroup. The helminth communities of silverside, Odontesthes bonariensis (Valenciennes, 1835), from two Argentinean lagoons were studied and compared at component community and infracommunity levels. Nine helminth species were found: five digeneans (Austrodiplostomum cf. mordax, Ascocotyle (Phagicola) cf. diminuta, Ascocotyle sp., Thometrema bonariensis and Saccocoelioides sp.); two nematodes (Contracaecum sp. and Hysterothylacium sp.); one acanthocephalan (Wolffhugelia matercula) and one cestode (Cangatiella macdonaghi). Odontesthes bonariensis is a new host record for five parasite species. Richness, diversity and number of helminths in silversides from Salada Grande lagoon were higher than in those from Lacombe lagoon. This could be related with lagoon size, abundance of mollusks and fish-eating birds, and size and diet of silversides captured in each lagoon. In Salada Grande lagoon the helminth community of silversides was dominated by the allogenic and generalist species A. cf. mordax; while the autogenic and intermediate specialist species C. macdonaghi was dominant in Lacombe lagoon. Host sex did not affect richness, diversity or total abundance, whereas host size was positively correlated with these attributes, except diversity in Salada Grande lagoon. Las comunidades de helmintos del pejerrey, Odontesthes bonariensis (Valenciennes, 1835), procedentes de dos lagunas argentinas fueron estudiadas y comparadas a nivel de comunidad componente e infracomunidad. Se hallaron nueve especies de helmintos, cinco digeneos (Austrodiplostomum cf. mordax, Ascocotyle (Phagicola) cf. diminuta, Ascocotyle sp., Thometrema bonariensis y Saccocoelioides sp.); dos nematodes (Hysterothylacium sp. y Contracaecum sp.); un acantocéfalo (Wolffhugelia matercula) y un cestode (Cangatiella macdonaghi). Odontesthes bonariensis es reportado como un nuevo hospedador para cinco de estas especies. La riqueza específica, la diversidad y la carga parasitaria fueron mas elevadas en la laguna Salada Grande que en la Laguna Lacombe. Esto podría estar relacionado con atributos del cuerpo de agua (tamaño, abundancia de moluscos y aves ictiófagas) y del hospedador (talla y dieta de los pejerreyes capturados en cada laguna). En la laguna Salada Grande, la comunidad de helmintos fue dominada por una especie alogénica y generalista, A. cf. mordax; mientras que en la laguna Lacombe fue dominada por un a especie autogénica y especialista intermedia, C. macdonaghi. El sexo del hospedador no estuvo correlacionado con la riqueza específica, diversidad y carga parasitaria, mientras que la talla del hospedador presentó correlación positiva con estos atributos, excepto la diversidad en la laguna Salda Grande.

The aim of this work was to study two aspects of phenotypic plasticity in the Patagonian pejerrey Odontesthes hatcheri (Teleostei: Atherinopsidae) the dependence of the early morphology on developmental time and temperature, and the induction of morphological changes by controlled feeding in juveniles. Newly hatched free embryos, incubated at two different temperatures (13 and 18oC), and juveniles were used for the study and induction of phenotypic plasticity. Body and head shapes were analyzed with geometric morphometrics and linear measurements. Our results showed that shape variation at hatching was related to the bending of the embryo head on the yolk sac, increasing the head-trunk angle due to progressive straightening of the embryo. The head-trunk angle was related with temperature at incubation, with embryos incubated at higher temperature being more bent. Embryos that hatched earlier had bigger yolk sacs than those that hatched later. In juveniles, controlled feeding experiments added new morphological variation to that of wild juveniles. In all comparisons, the slenderness of the head, the size of premaxilla and jaw, and the position of the eye showed an enlarged variation due to controlled feeding. These results will contribute to comprehending the complexity of the morphological variation of O. hatcheri.O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a variação morfológica e plasticidade fenotípica do peixe-rei da Patagônia Odontesthes hatcheri (Teleostei: Atherinopsidae), a dependência da morfologia inicial no tempo de desenvolvimento e temperatura, e a indução de alterações morfológicas pela alimentação controlada em juvenis. Embriões recém-nascidos, incubados a duas temperaturas diferentes (13 e 18oC) e juvenis foram utilizados para o estudo de indução de plasticidade fenotípica. Formas do corpo e cabeça foram analisadas com técnicas de morfometria geométrica e medições lineares. Os nossos resultados mostraram que a variação da forma no nascimento foi relacionada com a curvatura da cabeça do embrião no saco vitelino, aumentando o ângulo de cabeça-tronco devido ao endireitamento progressivo do embrião. O ângulo da cabeça-tronco relacionou-se com a temperatura de incubação, com os embriões incubados na temperatura elevada sendo mais curvados. Os embriões que eclodiram mais cedo tinham sacos vitelinos maiores do que aqueles que eclodiram tardiamente. Em juvenis, os experimentos de alimentação controlada adicionaram nova variação morfológica àquela dos juvenis selvagens. Em todas as comparações, a espessura da cabeça, o tamanho da pré-maxila e mandíbula, e a posição do olho mostraram uma maior variação devido à alimentação controlada. Estes resultados irão contribuir para a compreensão da complexidade da variação morfológica de O. hatcheri.

Seventeen parasite species (1 microsporidean, 1 cestode, 5 digeneans, 6 nematodes, 2 acanthocephalans, and 2 copepods) were recovered from a total of 356 Odontesthes smitti and 125 Odontesthes nigricans (Atherinopsidae). Fishes were collected from Nuevo and San Jose´ gulfs, Argentinean Sea, from April 2003 to February 2005. The following parasites were found: Microsporidia (xenomas); Cestoda: Tetraphyllidea plerocercoid larvae; Digenea: Prosorhynchoides sp. metacercariae (Bucephalidae), Aponurus laguncula, Lecithaster sp. (Lecithasteridae), Proctotrema sp. (Monorchiidae), Diphterostomum sp. (Zoogonidae); Nematoda: Cucullanus marplatensis (Cucullanidae), Huffmanela moraveci (Trichosomoididae), Cosmocephalus obvelatus L3 (Acuariidae), Anisakis sp. L3, Pseudoterranova sp. L3, Contracaecum sp. L3 (Anisakidae); Acanthocephala: Corynosoma sp. cystacanth larvae (Polymorphidae), Hypoechinorhynchus sp. (Arhythmacanthidae); Crustacea: Bomolochus globiceps (Bomolochidae) and Peniculus sp. (Penelidae). Odontesthes smitti and O. nigricans are new host records for most these parasites. The objective of this study was to compare two different morphometric methodologies - traditional measurements and truss networks - based on two species of silversides, Odontesthes bonariensis (Valenciennes, 1835) and O. humensis De Buen, 1953, to determine which of the methods results in more reliable distinction between groups. The traditional measures do not represent the true fish form because it does not take into account alometric variations or distinct growth stages. The measures with truss networks extend over the fish form thoroughly resulting in complete representation of the fish's body when homologous morphologic points are connected. The two sets of measures used in the principal components analysis resulted in two groups. The first principal component presented similar positive coefficients, being interpreted as a variation of "size", due to different stages of fish growth. The second component presented positive and negative coefficients, with different values that were interpreted as changes in the "shape" of the organisms. As the groups overlapped partially on the second component axis (the one that represents shape), data were adjusted to exclude the size effect. The first component, then, presented positive and negative coefficients that were related to changes in the shape of organisms. The variables with positive coefficients were related to the anterior area of the body, while the negative coefficients were associated with the caudal peduncle. These variables were the same ones found in both the adjusted and non-adjusted analysis. This study showed that measures with truss networks represented more clearly the difference between groups of O. bonariensis and O. humensis, than with the traditional measures.

Since Barbour proposed sympatric speciation to explain evolution of silversides in the Lerma-Santiago basin, relatively little subsequent study has been done. We assessed foraging patterns of four sympatric silversides species (Chirostoma estor, Chirostoma grandocule, Chirostoma attenuatum and Chirostoma patzcuaro) in Lago de Pátzcuaro to understand resource partitioning and their sympatric coexistence. We assessed the abundance of invertebrate prey in three feeding habitats and measured physical and chemical habitat parameters at two study sites. Fish were collected during the wet (September 1987) and dry (March 1988) seasons; a total of 242 gut contents were analyzed. We evaluated the trophic guild of each species using the index of relative importance (IRI), prey selectivity with the Ivlev Electivity Index (E), dietary diversity using Shannon and Wiener diversity index (H’), and diet overlap using Morisita index. All silverside species were determined to be predacious carnivores that feed mainly on nekton and periphyton. Dietary diversity and prey selectivity patterns were similar among species and diet overlap was >70%. Our data do not support the proposition that coexistence of these four fish species is maintained by dietary specialization. We hypothesize that sympatric coexistence of atherinopsids in Lago de Pátzcuaro is explained by food resource availability and ontogenetic variation in their diets. This study highlights the importance of analyzing ecological patterns and mechanisms as basic elements for designing conservation strategies of species flocks, especially under habitat loss and introduction of exotic species. Conservation efforts are urgent to preserve the rare evolutionary process of sympatric speciation (habitat segregation) that is occurring in other lakes in central Mexico, and probably already lost in the Lago de Pátzcuaro, as a result of poor management and inadequate conservation strategies. RESUMEN: Los patrones de forrajeo de cuatro especies simpátricas del género Chirostoma (Chirostoma estor, Chirostoma grandocule, Chirostoma attenuatum y Chirostoma patzcuaro) fueron evaluadas en el Lago de Pátzcuaro, para entender la repartición de recursos alimenticios y su coexistencia simpátrica. La abundancia de invertebrados presa fue estimada en distintos hábitat alimenticios y se midieron parámetros físicos y químicos del hábitat en dos sitios de estudio. Los peces fueron recolectados durante las temporadas de lluvias (Septiembre 1987) y estiaje (Marzo 1988); 242 tractos digestivos fueron analizados. Se revaluó el gremio trófico, la selectividad de las presas, la diversidad y el traslape de dieta. Las cuatro especies fueron determinadas como carnívoros depredadores que se alimentan principalmente de necton y perifiton. La diversidad de la dieta y los patrones de selectividad de presas fueron similares entre los atherinopsidos y el traslape de dieta fue >70%. Los resultados no apoyan la propuesta de que la coexistencia de estas cuatro especies se mantiene por medio de la especialización de su dieta. Se hipotetizó que la coexistencia simpátrica de los atherinopsidos del Lago de Pátzcuaro se explica por la alta disponibilidad de recursos alimenticios y la variación ontogénica de su dieta. Este estudio resalta la importancia de analizar los patrones y mecanismos ecológicos como elementos básicos para el diseño de estrategias de conservación en bandadas de especies, bajo efectos antropogénicos como la pérdida del hábitat y la introducción de especies exóticas. Los esfuerzos de conservación son urgentes para preservar el raro proceso evolutivo de la especiación simpátrica (segregación del hábitat) que ocurre en otros lagos del centro de México, y que posiblemente se ha perdido en el Lago de Pátzcuaro, como resultado del manejo deficiente y estrategias de conservación inadecuadas. The aims of this study were to determine the existence of migratory movements and to identify ecological stocks of the silverside Odontesthes smitti along its distribution in the Southern Atlantic Ocean, using metazoan parasites as biological tags. Samples were obtained from San José Gulf (SJ) (42° 25′ S; 64° 07′ W) and Nuevo Gulf (NG) (42° 47′ S; 65° 02′ W) in north Patagonia during winter and summer and in waters of Mar del Plata (MDP) (38° 03′ S; 57° 32′ W), Bonaerense region, during winter. Fifteen parasite species were collected. Multivariate statistical procedures on parasite community data showed strong effect of host size on the structure of parasite assemblages. Taking into account the variations among samples due to host size, the differential structure of parasite communities between SJ and NG suggests that fish inhabiting these localities could belong to different ecological stocks. Fish from MDP and SJ caught in summer showed similar composition in their parasite assemblages, which is congruent with a migratory cycle that implies that fish caught in MDP during winter inhabit SJ during summer. Further evidence of the Patagonian origin of MDP O. smitti is the presence of the digenean Proctotrema bartolii in fish from both regions. Proctotrema bartolii is acquired by O. smitti only in the Magellanic province, where its intermediate host, Darina solenoides, is distributed. The analyses suggest that O. smitti inhabiting north Patagonian gulfs could belong to different ecological stocks and that O. smitti caught in MDP could have come from SJ. It is well known that in pejerrey water temperature not only affects growth rates but also directs the sexual differentiation process. This fact rise the question of how different the development of pejerrey larvae of the same age is when reared at different temperatures. A description of developmental stages for the embryonic and larval periods of the pejerrey, Odontesthes bonariensis, and the influence of rearing temperature on larval development are presented. Then, larval development was studied at three rearing temperatures, and changes in general morphology, fin morphology, and caudal fin structure have been taken into consideration within the thermal range involved in the temperature sex determination of this species. Fin fold reabsorption, caudal fin formation, and body shape were selected to follow the events leading to the acquisition of the juvenile morphology. The juvenile phenotype was defined when the fin fold was reabsorpted and the caudal fin acquired its definitive homocercal structure. The moment at which the juvenile phenotype was achieved, was evaluated in relation to larval age, size and, shape. The size resulted as the best indicator of development in pejerrey. A temperatura da água não afeta apenas as taxas de crescimento no peixe-rei, mas também direciona o processo de diferenciação sexual. Este fato levanta o questionamento de quão diferente é o desenvolvimento de larvas do peixe-rei da mesma idade quando criadas em temperaturas diferentes. Este trabalho teve como objetivo apresentar uma descrição do de desenvolvimento de embriões e larvas do peixe-rei, Odontesthes bonariensis, e a influência da temperatura de criação no desenvolvimento das larvas. Neste trabalho, o desenvolvimento das larvas foi estudado em três temperaturas diferentes de cultivo. Foram consideradas as alterações ocorridas na morfologia geral, assim como na morfologia e na estrutura da nadadeira caudal dentro da variação termal da temperatura de determinação sexual desta espécie. A taxa de reabsorção da membrana embrionária, a formação da cauda e o formato do corpo foram selecionados para acompanhar os eventos que levam à aquisição da morfologia juvenil. O fenótipo juvenil foi definido quando a nadadeira caudal foi reabsorvida e a cauda adquiriu a estrutura homocerca. O momento no qual o fenótipo juvenil foi atingido, foi avaliado quanto à idade, tamanho e formato da larva, sendo que o tamanho resultou no melhor indicador do desenvolvimento do peixe-rei. One hundred and seventy-six determined species and 39 undetermined species of copepods associated with 179 marine and freshwater fish species from Brazil are listed, including information about the site of infection, host habitat, localities and references. Also, a host-parasite list is included herein.

Se describió el desarrollo del otolito Sagitta de juveniles y adultos de Odontesthes argentinensis procedentes de Punta Rasa (36°22' S) y Miramar (38°16' S) y de Odontesthes bonariensis de la Laguna de Chascomús (35° 36' S). Se estudió, la morfología de las sagittae de ambas especies, analizando cuatro grupos morfológicos para O. argentinensis (I: 75-120 mm, II: 130-220 mm, III: 230-270 y IV: 280-320 mm) y tres grupos morfológicos para O. bonariensis (I: 80-120 mm, II: 130-220 y III: 230-320 mm). Las características morfológicas comunes a la sagitta, de ambas especies, en los grupos estudiados son: presencia de sulcus, depresión areal dorsal en la cara medial, cara lateral con estrías y la presencia de un punto culminante en el borde dorsal. En la sagitta de O. argentinensis, la depresión areal dorsal se inicia ligada a la cauda, característica que permitió distinguir claramente entre otolitos de juveniles de ambas especies. A partir del estado adulto, la depresión areal dorsal se halla separada de la cauda en las dos especies y el análisis estadístico evidenció un crecimiento discontinuo. Se hallaron diferencias morfológicas entre pares de sagitta de un mismo individuo en cuanto a la forma del ostium, presencia de cisura, rostro y punto culminante, aunque no se halló significancia morfométrica

The silverside, Atherinella brasiliensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824), a resident species of the shallows of bays, estuaries and coastal lagoons, was studied during two annual cycles, using beach seines (July 1996 to June 1998), in the continental margin of the Sepetiba Bay, aiming to assess recruitment and distribution patterns. A wide recruitment period, with young-of-the-year appearing from early spring to early autumn, was shown, with peaks of juveniles (Total Length-LT = 10-30 mm) being recorded in two periods of the year; one in November and another in March. The highest abundances, of both juvenile and adults, were recorded in Coroa Grande and Itacuruçá, sites located in the outer Bay, during the whole summer, with significant differences were found. In spite of not having been found any statistically significant relationship between the environmental factors and the occurrence of this species, a trend of higher abundance in colder and more saline waters was detected. High values of growth coefficient (K = 0.93) and low asymptotic lenght (L∞ = 11.6 cm) indicated that this species shows a high growth rate and short life cycle, with life span of 3.09 years, in this system.

Atherinella blackburni (Schultz, 1949) (Atherinopsidae), is known in the Atlantic Ocean in Costa Rica, south of Caribe and from Venezuela to central Brazil. The distribution and the intraespecific variation of characters of A. blackburni are poorly known. This study records A. blackburni in Bahia littoral and presents more informations about its intraespecific variation.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2006-07-01 This paper describes the karyotype of Odontesthes regia by means of Giemsa staining, C-banding, to reveal the distribution of the constitutive heterochromatin, and by Ag-staining and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), to locate ribosomal genes (rDNA). The chromosome diploid modal count in the species was 2n = 48. The karyotype is composed of one submetacentric pair (pair 1), 16 subtelocentric pairs (pairs 2 to 17), and 7 acrocentric pairs (pairs 18 to 24). With the exception of pair 1 it was not possible to classify the homologous chromosomes accurately because differences in chromosome size were too slight between adjacent pairs. The distribution of C-banded heterochromatin allowed for a more accurate matching of the majority of chromosomes of the subtelocentric series. Silver staining of metaphase spreads allowed for the identification of Nucleolus Organizer Regions (Ag-NOR) on pair 1. FISH experiments showed that 18S rDNA sequences were located, as expected, in the same chromosome pair identified as the Ag-NOR-bearing one.
