The genus Choeradoplana Graff, 1896 encompasses 16 species, most of them found in Brazil. Herein two new species of this genus are described from remnants of Araucaria moist forests, located in the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina, south Brazil. Both species resemble the type-species of the genus, C.iheringi, showing brownish dorsal surface covered by dark-brown flecks. However, regarding their anatomy, the new species differ from C.iheringi and other congeners by a long and horizontal disposed permanent papilla. In such aspects, both species resemble C.benyai, but differ from this species, as well as from each other, in details of the prostatic vesicle, ejaculatory duct, and penis papilla.

Trophic niche of Dendropsophus minutus (Anura: Hylidae) in southern Brazil. The feeding biology of the Neotropical tree frog Dendropsophus minutus is described based on identifcation of the items consumed by the anuran. Samples were collected monthly samplings for one year in an Araucaria forest in the state of Paraná in southern Brazil. Of the total of 101 gastrointestines examined, 51 were empty or contained digested remains or plant items. The 50 samples of gastrointestinal contents contained three classes and 10 orders of arthropods. The results suggest that D. minutus is a generalist predator that feeds on arthropods, primarily those in the orders Araneae, Lepidoptera, and Diptera. The diet varies seasonally depending upon prey activity, which determines the breadth of the trophic niche of the frog.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo realizar a flora de Acanthaceae do PARNA Iguaçu, com ilustrações botânicas, chave de identificação e descrições das espécies. Para isso foram realizadas coletas mensais de agosto de 2015 a julho de 2016 nas áreas de Céu Azul, Capanema e Foz do Iguaçu. Os indivíduos coletados foram depositados no herbário UNOP e os espécimes presentes nos herbários EVB, HCF, MBM e UNOP, assim como nos herbários virtuais Reflora e SpeciesLink, foram analisados. Foram encontradas 13 espécies nativas da Mata Atlântica, distribuídas em sete gêneros, sendo Justicia o mais representativo, com cinco espécies. Foram registradas 12 novas ocorrências para o Parque Nacional do Iguaçu, das quais oito são novos registros para Floresta Estacional Semidecidual. Dentre as espécies encontradas, três são ameaçadas de extinção, sendo uma categorizada como vulnerável e duas em perigo de extinção, o que reforça o papel do PARNA Iguaçu na conservação in-situ no estado do Paraná. Species of Acanthaceae are predominantly associated with conserved forest environments such as Iguaçu National Park (PARNA Iguaçu), which is composed of Semideciduous Seasonal Forest and Araucaria forest. The aim of this work was to perform a floristic study of Acanthaceae of PARNA Iguaçu, with botanical illustrations, an identification key and descriptions of the species. Collections were carried out monthly from August 2015 to July 2016, in the areas of Céu Azul, Capanema and Foz do Iguaçu. The individuals collected were deposited in the UNOP herbarium and the specimens present in the herbaria EVB, HCF, MBM and UNOP, as well as in the virtual herbaria Reflora and SpeciesLink, were analyzed. A total of 13 native species were recorded from Atlantic Forest, distributed in seven genera. Justicia was the most representative, with five species. In all, 12 new records were made for PARNA Iguaçu, of which eight are new records for Semideciduous Seasonal Forest. Of the species found, three are threatened with extinction, one of which is considered vulnerable and two are categorized as endangered, which reinforces the role of PARNA Iguaçu in in-situ conservation in the state of Paraná. Iguaçu National Park represents the largest fragment of Inland Atlantic Rainforest of Paraná state. The vegetation is predominantly seasonal semideciduous forest, in the areas of Foz do Iguaçu and Capanema and a transition of this with Araucaria forest, in the Céu Azul area. This work aimed to recognize the genera and species of Rubiaceae occurring in the Park, through monthly collections from August 2013 to July 2014, supplemented with sporadic collections from May 2018 to April 2019. Thirty-five species were recorded, belonging to 19 genera. The most representative genera were Palicourea and Psychotria with five species, Galianthe, Manettia, Borreria with three, Geophila and Coccocypselum with two, and the other genera with only one species each. The areas with the major species richness were Foz do Iguaçu, with 24, of which four are exclusive to this area, followed by Céu Azul with 22 species, of which eight are exclusive. Of the 35 species recorded, seven occur in all areas and in both forest formations, seven occur only in the Araucaria forest area, and 20 occur only in the seasonal semideciduous forest. Borreria orientalis is highlighted due to its restricted distribution in Brazil, occurring only in Paraná, and Manettia tweedieana is considered endangered. Resumo O Parque Nacional do Iguaçu representa o maior fragmento de Mata Atlântica de Interior do estado do Paraná. Sua vegetação é predominantemente de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual, nas áreas de Foz do Iguaçu e Capanema e uma transição desta com Floresta Ombrófila Mista, na Área de Céu Azul. Este trabalho teve por objetivo reconhecer os gêneros e espécies de Rubiaceae com ocorrência no Parque, através de coletas mensais de agosto de 2013 a julho de 2014, complementadas com coletas esporádicas de maio de 2018 a abril 2019. Foram encontradas 35 espécies, pertencentes a 19 gêneros. Os gêneros mais representativos foram Palicourea e Psychotria com cinco espécies, Galianthe, Manettia, Borreria com três, Geophila e Coccocypselum com duas e os demais gêneros com apenas uma espécie cada. As áreas com maiores riquezas de espécies foram Foz do Iguaçu, com 24, sendo quatro exclusivas desta área, seguidas de Céu Azul com 22 espécies, das quais oito são exclusivas. Das 35 espécies encontradas sete ocorrem em todas as áreas e em ambas as formações florestais, sete ocorrem só na área de Floresta Ombrófila Mista e 20 ocorrem somente na Floresta Estacional Semidecidual. Destacam-se ainda Borreria orientalis por ter uma distribuição restrita no Brasil, apenas no Paraná e Manettia tweedieana por ser considerada “Em Perigo” de extinção.

A erva-mate produzida em áreas de floresta é influenciada pelos fatores sombreamento, altitude e umidade do solo, os quais favorecem o diferencial de qualidade e sabor intitulado a esse produto. O planalto norte catarinense caracteriza-se como uma das principais regiões produtoras de erva-mate em áreas de floresta no Brasil. Sendo assim, objetivou-se realizar a quantificação das áreas de florestas, utilizando imagens do satélite C-bers 4 e analisar, em amostras de erva-mate cancheada, indícios de contaminação por produtos fitossanitários visando subsidiar a indicação geográfica (IG) da cultura. Ensaios de multiresíduos de produtos fitossanitários foram realizados por meio de cromatografia a líquido/espectrometria de massa sequencial (LS/MS/MS) conforme métodos da AOAC (2012), e não foram encontradas contaminação por nenhuma das 151 substâncias avaliadas na análise. Dentre todos os usos das terras avaliados, 44% são de áreas de florestas nativas. A expressiva presença de áreas de floresta e ausência de contaminação por produtos fitossanitários na erva-mate cultivada nessa região favorece ainda mais IG da cultura., Yerba mate produced in forested areas is influenced by shading, altitude and soil moisture factors, which favor the quality and flavor differential of this product. The northern Santa Catarina plateau is characterized as one of the main producing regions of yerba mate in forest areas in Brazil. Thus, the objective of this study was to quantify forest areas using images from the C-bers 4 satellite and to analyze evidence of contamination by phytosanitary products in yerba mate samples in order to support the geographical indication (GI) of the crop. Phytosanitary multiresiduals assays were performed by liquid chromatography / sequential mass spectrometry (LS/MS/MS) according to AOAC (2012) methods, and no contamination was found for any of the 151 substances evaluated in the analysis. Of all land uses assessed, 44% are from native forest areas. Biological invasion is a major threat to global biodiversity and ecosystem services. We examined the functional traits similarity between a set of native and non-native invasive tree species from the Southern Brazilian subtropical mixed forest, part of an important global hotspot for biodiversity conservation. We hypothesized that invasive species occupy marginal niche spaces. We ordered the species using the Principal Component Analysis based on their wood density, leaf area, and specific leaf area. These are all important traits that summarize essential ecological strategies associated with resource acquisition and conservation. Functional overlaps between non-native and native species were analyzed through kernel density estimation of continuous traits data. While native and non-native invasive species were distributed along the same functional gradients, the position of non-native species in the functional space is species and traits specific. We concluded that within Brazilian subtropical mixed forests, the functional dissimilarity as a key factor in invasion success could not be generalized for all species and traits.

El sotobosque es un componente de gran relevancia para la flora y estructura de los bosques tropicales. Los ambientes montañosos, a través de factores físicos, pueden reflejar diferencias en la estructura y composición de este estrato. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar si existe una correlación entre la pendiente del terreno y la comunidad de plantas del sotobosque. Se analizó una zona de transición entre la Floresta Ombrófila densa y la Selva de Araucaria en el Bosque Atlántico en el sur de Brasil. Se delimitaron 63 parcelas de 1 m², subdivididas por igual entre tres clases de pendiente (0-25%, 40-60% y >80%). Se registraron 93 especies, 63 géneros y 42 familias. Las familias más ricas fueron Myrtaceae (15 especies), Lauraceae (7), Dryopteridaceae (6) y Rubiaceae (5). Las formas de vida más frecuentes fueron arbórea (43 especies), seguido de herbácea (24) y arbustiva (11). Se registraron 58 especies transitorias y 35 residentes. Los índices de riqueza y diversidad no mostraron diferencias significativas entre la estructura y la composición de las clases de pendientes. Los análisis de ordenamiento no distinguieron diferentes grupos para las clases de pendiente. Esto posiblemente se justifica por la homogeneidad ambiental del área muestreada generada por la densidad y regularidad del dosel, la estabilidad climática de la región, el alto contenido de materia orgánica y los suelos superficiales. The understory is a component of great relevance to the flora and structure of tropical forests. Mountain environments, through physical factors, can show differences in the structure and composition of this stratum. We aimed to analyze whether there is a correlation between the slope and the understory plant community. A transition area between the Montane Dense Ombrophilous Forest and the Araucaria Forest in the Atlantic Forest in South of Brazil was analyzed. 63 plots of 1 m² were made, being equally subdivided into three slope classes (0-25%, 40-60%, and >80%). 93 species, 63 genera and 42 families were recorded. The richest families were Myrtaceae (15 species), followed by Lauraceae (7), Dryopteridaceae (6), and Rubiaceae (5). The most frequent life forms were arboreal (43 species), followed by herbaceous (24) and shrubby (11). 58 species were transient and 35 were resident. The richness and diversity indices showed no significant differences between the structure and composition of the slope classes. The ordination analysis could not distinguish any slope class grouping. This is possibly justified by the environmental homogeneity of the sampled area created by the density and regularity of the canopy, climatic stability, high organic matter and shallow soil.

The Southern Brazilian Highlands are composed by a mosaic of Mixed Ombrophilous Forest (MOF) and grassland formations, an interesting landscape for the study of population structure. We analyzed the genetic diversity within and among populations of the MOF-endemic bromeliad Vriesea reitzii by genotyping seven nuclear microsatellite loci in 187 individuals from six populations. We characterized levels of genetic diversity and assessed the genetic structure among populations. Vriesea reitzii populations showed high levels of genetic variation (number of alleles 28 - 43, allelic richness 3.589 - 5.531) and moderate levels of genetic differentiation (F ST = 0.123, R ST = 0.096). The high levels of genetic diversity may be explained by species life-history traits, such as habit and mating system. The moderate structure may be a product of the combination of ancient and contemporary gene flow, resulting from the expansion of the forest in the Holocene, and/or due to facilitated dispersal mediated by the MOF’s mosaic landscape. The genetic results indicated no imminent threat to this bromeliad. However, the species is highly associated with the MOF, putting landscape conservation at the center of conservation efforts for the species’ maintenance.

RESUMO Objetivou-se verificar as interações entre a configuração espacial da paisagem, a organização florísticoestrutural e as taxas demográficas do componente arbóreo em um sistema de fragmentos e corredores de Floresta com Araucárias em Lages, Santa Catarina. Para isso, foi elaborado um modelo conceitual das possíveis inter-relações, que foi avaliado pela técnica de Modelagem de Equações Estruturais. No ano de 2010, foram obtidas as métricas da paisagem (área, distância do vizinho mais próximo e relação borda e o interior da floresta) e os dados do primeiro inventário florestal. Foram alocadas parcelas permanentes em cinco fragmentos e corredor florestal, onde todos os indivíduos arbóreos com CAP (circunferência a altura do peito, medida a 1,30 do solo) igual ou superior a 15,7 cm foram identificados e mensurados. Em 2014 foi realizado o segundo inventário, com a inclusão de indivíduos recrutas, contagem de mortos e sobreviventes, e foram calculadas as taxas demográficas. Os dados foram analisados por meio da Análise de Componentes Principais (PCA), Análise de Coordenadas Principais (PCoA), Modelagem de Equações Estruturais e Modelos Lineares Generalizados (GLM). Os resultados demonstraram que a estrutura da paisagem (PCA 1) exerceu influência apenas sobre a organização florístico-estrutural do componente arbóreo, indicada pela distribuição preferencial de espécies arbóreas em função da intensidade da fragmentação. Por sua vez, as taxas demográficas (taxas de ganho e perda em área basal e de mortalidade) foram influenciadas por aspectos estruturais da vegetação (abundância e área basal). Conclui-se que existem variações florísticoestruturais associadas à configuração espacial dos fragmentos na paisagem e que as taxas demográficas apresentam relação com o estágio sucessional da floresta, sintetizado pelas variáveis estruturais de área basal e abundância. ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to investigate the interactions among the landscape spatial configuration, the floristic-structural organization and demographic rates of the tree component of a system of araucaria forest fragments, in Lages, Santa Catarina state. To do so, we developed a conceptual model of inter-relationship that was evaluated by Structural Equation Modeling. In 2010, the landscape metrics (area, distance from the nearest neighbor and edge-core ratio) and first vegetation inventory data were obtained. Permanent plots were allocated in five forest fragments and forest corridor, where all tree individuals with cbh (circumference at breast height, measured at 1.30 ground) greater than or equal to 15.7 cm were identified and measured. In 2014, the second inventory was conducted, with the inclusion of recruits and counting dead and survivor’s individuals, followed by the determination of demographic rates. The data were analyzed through Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA), Structural Equation Modelling, and Generalized Linear Models (GLM). The results showed that the landscape structure (PCA 1) had a significant influence only on the floristic-structural organization of the tree component, indicated by the preferential distribution of tree species in response to fragmentation intensity. In turn, the demographic rates (basal area gain and loss rates, and mortality rate) were influenced by structural aspects of vegetation (abundance and basal area). We conclude that there was floristic-structural variation associated to the spatial configuration of fragments in the landscape and that the demographics rates presented relation with forest successional stage, synthetized by structural variables of basal area and abundance.

Plant functional traits have been recognized as important factors related to the ecological strategies of species in forest ecosystems. We examined the relationships between functional traits and both tree species performance and environmental conditions in a subtropical forest in Brazil. Over four years (2008-2012), we investigated how demographic rates were related to functional traits (wood density, leaf area and tree height) of 20 species sampled within 50 plots of 10 × 20 m, which had previously evaluated as to environmental conditions. Non-metric multidimensional scaling was used to order the species by their functional traits. The demographic rates were fit a posteriori to the ordination, with significant rates (p < 0.05) plotted as vectors. The relationships between environmental conditions and the community-weighted means (CWMs) of trait values were verified using redundancy analysis. CWM wood density was positively correlated with soil pH. CWM leaf area and CWM maximum tree height were both negatively correlated with altitude and positively correlated with soil magnesium (Mg) content. The taller species with lower wood density, which occupied the forest canopy, had a greater diameter increment and lower recruitment than did the shortest species with higher wood density. The shorter species with higher wood density, which occupied the understory, had greater recruitment and a greater increase in abundance than did the taller/lower-wood-density species. Our study (i) revealed changes in the forest related to the light environment, with an increase in the relative participation of shade-tolerant species with higher wood densities, and (ii) detected small-scale spatial variation in community traits as a response to variations in soil chemical properties and topography.

Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze is a native tree species of major importance in southern Brazil. It is a regional symbol due to its iconic shape and stature in the landscape; its wood was once economically important and its seeds are an important source of food for the fauna and are presently used in regional cuisine. Despite its importance and apparent abundance, the species is facing extinction mainly as a result of unregulated exploitation and deforestation. This study catalogued the remaining individuals in order to add to the body of knowledge available on A. angustifolia, a species that has become rare across its historic range. The circumference at breast height (1.30 m), the total height, and the tree volume were measured (3,529 araucarias). We catalogued trees with a large diameter measuring them in loco over three years involving a journey of more than 6,800 km. The volumes of these old trees are very large, ranging from 38.2 m3 to 106.6 m3. The largest A. angustifolia individual is located in the state of Santa Catarina and measures 3.25 m in diameter. The giant araucarias with > 2.00 m in diameter are rare and only 13 individuals could be found in southern Brazil; a priority action at the governmental level is to recognize and preserve these monumental trees and together with a need for a public policy of drawing up specific inventories of large trees.

The objective of this study was to analyze the morphofunctional attributes of Mixed Ombrophyllous Forest species of different successional categories. Fruits were collected from forest remnants in Curitiba, Paraná. It was analyzed the biometrics of seeds and seedlings of all species and the following ratios were estimated: shoot/seedling length, shoot/seedling mass, cotyledons/seedling mass, eophyll/seedling mass and seedling/ seed mass. Statistical differences among sucessional groups were observed in many of the evaluated traits. The variability among species is mainly explained by seedling size, tissue investment for light interception and shoot resource allocation. Late secondary species have larger seedlings with characteristics that indicate slower initial development, dependent on seed reserves. The pioneers species have smaller seedlings but faster development and earlier dependence on photosynthesis. These morphological and functional differences can result in different strategies for the establishment of seedlings in the successional process. The cluster analysis results on formation of two major groups. The first group is comprised of the late secondary species. The second group includes two distinct subgroups that separate the pioneers, and most of the early secondary species. These results indicate that the number and quality of available data should be considered in the definition of successional categories adopted in ecological studies. Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar os atributos morfofuncionais das espécies da Floresta Ombrófila Mista, pertencentes a diferentes categorias sucessoriais. Frutos foram coletados de remanescentes florestais em Curitiba, Paraná. Foi realizada a biometria das sementes e plântulas e estimados os seguintes índices: comprimento da parte aérea/plântula; massa da parte aérea/plântula; massa dos cotilédones/plântula; massa dos eofilos/plântula e massa da plântula/semente. Diferenças estatísticas entre os grupos foram observadas em muitas das características avaliadas. A variabilidade entre as espécies é explicada pelo tamanho das plântulas, investimento em tecidos para interceptação da luz e alocação de recursos na parte aérea. As secundárias tardias têm plântulas maiores com características que indicam um desenvolvimento inicial mais lento, dependente das reservas da semente. As pioneiras têm plântulas menores, desenvolvimento mais rápido e são dependentes da fotossíntese. Essas diferenças morfofuncionais resultam em diferentes estratégias de estabelecimento das plântulas no processo sucessional. A análise de agrupamento resultou na formação de dois grupos principais: o primeiro composto pelas espécies secundárias tardias e o segundo formado por dois subgrupos distintos, que separam as pioneiras e a maioria das secundárias iniciais. Estes resultados indicam que o número e a qualidade dos dados disponíveis devem ser considerados na definição de categorias sucessoriais adotadas em estudos ecológicos.

Upper montane ecosystems in Brazil are little known, and their structural and functional aspects poorly understood. Our goals were to describe tree species diversity and community structure, and to characterize tree species in relation to their ecological traits, phytogeographic history and conservation status in an upper montane araucaria forest remnant. A total of 26 species belonging to 18 families were found in a 1-hectare permanent plot. The tree community mainly comprised trees with diameters of less than 20 cm and heights of between 6.5 and 9.5 m. Drimys angustifolia and Myrceugenia regnelliana had the highest importance values. Most species were shade tolerant while most individuals were pioneers. Most species and individuals presented zoophily and zoochory. Most sampled species and individuals were related to araucaria forests. Seven species are threatened to some degree while one species, Crinodendron brasiliensis, besides threatened, is also endemic to the region. The presence of endemic and endangered species demonstrates that the studied area serves important conservation purposes. Furthermore, the present study demonstrates the important role that upper montane regions have for conservation and describes the structural patterns of still poorly studied habitats, reinforcing the importance such systems have in maintaining species diversity at high elevations.

We examined the climatic response of Cedrela fissilis radial growth based on precipitation, air relative humidity, temperature and monthly thermal amplitude. It was intended to assess how the secondary growth of C. fissilis is influenced by the climatic variables and which one are the best growth predictors in Ombrophilous Mixed Forest, southern Brazil. Wood cores were processed using classical dendrochronology methodology. Principal Components Analysis, Generalized Linear Models and correlation were used to explore the relationship between radial growth and climate. Our results indicated that the best radial growth predictor is the temperature: the seasonal behavior, under well-watered conditions, seems to have a dominant effect on growth responses. Changes in tree growth corresponding to an increase in temperatures suggest a sensitivity of the species to climate changes. Local and regional environmental variations lead to different species composition, creating transitional areas. An example is the Araucaria and Seasonal forest in southern Brazil. Our objectives were (1) to describe the tree community structure and composition of a subtropical forest in southern Brazil and (2) to compare the floristic relationships between two forest typologies (Araucaria and Seasonal forest) in order to characterize the study area and the distribution patterns of tree species. We conducted a survey at Chapecó National Forest (in southern Brazil) in an area of 1.2 ha, where all individuals ≥ 30 cm of circumference at breast height were sampled. Community structure was described using the traditional phytosociological parameters. The floristic relationships were obtained by comparing our results with compiled data from other scientific papers through cluster analyses using an unweighted average linkage method, based on Jaccard similarity coefficient. We sampled 809 individuals belonging to 61 species and 28 families. The richest family was Fabaceae and Coussarea contracta (Walp.) Müll.Arg. was the most abundant species. Taxonomic diversity was 3.06 and the evenness was 0.74. The floristic similarity revealed that species composition of our study area is more similar to Seasonal forest. Species composition is related to environmental factors such as great thermal amplitude and seasonality. This subtropical forest is well structured, highly diverse and extremely important for the local and regional biodiversity conservation. Resumo: Variações ambientais locais e regionais levam à composição de espécies diferentes e áreas de transições. Um exemplo é a floresta com araucária e a floresta estacional no sul do Brasil. Nossos objetivos foram (1) descrever a composição e estrutura da comunidade arbórea de uma floresta subtropical no sul do Brasil e (2) comparar as relações florísticas entre duas tipologias florestais (Floresta com Araucária e Floresta Estacional) a fim de caracterizar a área de estudo e o padrão de distribuição de espécies arbóreas. Nós realizamos uma pesquisa na Floresta Nacional de Chapecó (no sul do Brasil) em uma área de 1.2 hectares, onde todos os indivíduos com circunferência à altura do peito ≥ 30 cm foram amostrados. A estrutura da comunidade foi descrita utilizando os parâmetros fitossociológicos tradicionais. Obtivemos as relações florísticas através da comparação dos nossos resultados com dados compilados de outros trabalhos científicos, através de análises de agrupamento (método de ligação de distância média não ponderada, UPGMA, baseado no coeficiente de similaridade de Jaccard). Foram amostrados 809 indivíduos pertencentes a 61 espécies e 28 famílias. A família mais rica foi Fabaceae e Coussarea contracta (Walp.) Müll.Arg. a espécie mais abundante. A diversidade taxonômica foi de 3.06 e a equabilidade foi de 0.74. A similaridade florística revelou que a composição de espécies da nossa área de estudo é mais similar a da floresta estacional. A composição de espécies está relacionada a fatores ambientais como a amplitude térmica e sazonalidade. Esta floresta subtropical é bem estruturada, altamente diversa e muito importante para a conservação da biodiversidade local e regional.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the seasonal variation in the nutrient and pigment content of leaves from five tree species - of which three are perennial (Cupania vernalis, Matayba elaeagnoides and Nectandra lanceolata) and two are deciduous (Cedrela fissilis and Jacaranda micrantha) - in an ecotone between a Deciduous Seasonal Forest and a Mixed Ombrophilous Forest in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Leaf samples were collected in the four seasons of the year to determine the content of macronutrients (N, K, P, Mg, Ca, S) and photosynthetic pigments (Chla, Chlb, Chltot, Cartot, Chla:Chlb and Cartot:Chltot). The principal component analysis showed that leaf pigments contributed to the formation of the first axis, which explains most of the data variance for all species, while leaf nutrient contribution showed strong interspecific variation. These results demonstrate that the studied species have different strategies for acquisition and use of mineral resources and acclimation to light, which are determinant for them to coexist in the forest environment. RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a variação sazonal no conteúdo foliar de nutrientes e pigmentos em cinco espécies de árvores, sendo três perenes (Cupania vernalis, Matayba elaeagnoides e Nectandra lanceolata) e duas decíduas (Cedrela fissilis e Jacaranda micrantha) - em um ecótone entre a Floresta Estacional Decidual e a Floresta Ombrófila Mista em Santa Catarina, Brasil. As amostras de folhas foram coletadas nas quatro estações do ano para determinar o conteúdo de macronutrientes (N, K, P, Mg, Ca, S) e pigmentos fotossintéticos (Chla, Chlb, Chltot, Cartot, Chla:Chlb e Cartot:Chltot). A análise de componentes principais revelou que os pigmentos foliares contribuíram na formação do primeiro eixo, o que explica a maior parte da variação dos dados, para todas as espécies, enquanto a contribuição dos nutrientes mostrou forte variação interespecífica. Estes resultados indicam que as espécies estudadas apresentam diferentes estratégias para aquisição e uso dos recursos minerais e aclimatação à luminosidade, as quais são fundamentais para sua coexistência no ambiente florestal.

The present paper describes a new species of Actinote (Nymphalidae, Heliconiinae, Acraeini) from southeastern Brazil, and describes the morphology of the adults and immature stages of this species. Actinote mantiqueira sp. nov. occurs in the Serra da Mantiqueira and Serra do Mar in the Atlantic Forest. Adults from this population are very similar to other species of the “orangish red mimicry complex”, including Actinote alalia (C. Felder & R. Felder, 1860), its sister species, restricted to the mountains of southern Brazil. Actinote mantiqueira sp. nov. and A. alalia are distinguishable by wing pattern, male genitalia and larval morphology, and have strongly allopatric distributions. The vitality of 64 lichen species (107 individual lichen thalli) growing under different light climates in an Araucaria forest in South Brazil was analyzed by chlorophyll fluorescence. Study sites were grouped according to their local light availability under full sunlight (about 2200 µmol m-2 s-1): 1 = low light, up to 20 µmol m-2 s-1; 2 = medium light, 20 to 100 µmol m-2 s-1; and 3 = high light, more than 100 µmol m-2 s-1. Maximum quantum yield of photosystem II, as shown by Fv/Fm of dark-adapted samples, was mainly between 0.3 and 0.7, with extremes of below 0.1 and up to 0.85. On average, yields were highest with low light availability (0.66). Groups 1 and 2 were not significantly different from each other, but groups 1 and 3, as well as groups 2 and 3 were. After dark adaptation, lichens were exposed to different light intensities by means of a chlorophyll fluorometer. The results show that low light-adapted lichens exhibit the highest sensitivity to excess light, as was also indicated by the data for non-photochemical quenching. Thus, shade-adapted lichens are obviously well protected from possible damage caused by excess light, which is important when exposed to sun flecks.

A Floresta Ombrófila Mista é uma das fitofisionomias mais ameaçadas do Brasil. Estima-se que apenas cerca de 3% da cobertura original desta formação florestal tenham restado. Em Minas Gerais, os remanescentes destas florestas com araucária são raros, restringindo-se principalmente ao Sul do estado. O trabalho objetivou avaliar a estrutura, a diversidade e a heterogeneidade de espécies do estrato arbóreo de uma Floresta Ombrófila Mista Altomontana em seu extremo norte de distribuição, Minas Gerais - Brasil. O presente estudo foi conduzido no Parque Estadual da Serra do Papagaio (PESP), que engloba o único remanescente de floresta com araucária em uma Unidade de Conservação (UC) de proteção integral em Minas Gerais. Foram alocadas na área 25 parcelas de 20 x 10 m (0,5 ha) e toda vegetação arbustiva-arbórea com DAP ≥ 4,8 cm foi mensurada, identificada e teve a altura estimada. Amostramos 1.158 indivíduos, pertencentes a 41 espécies, 28 gêneros e 22 famílias. Foi observada uma comunidade com forte concentração dos Valores de Importância (VI) nas três primeiras espécies (Podocarpus lambertii, Araucaria angustifolia e Myrceugenia bracteosa), que juntas somam 52,74% do VI total. A área basal total da comunidade foi de 30,82 m² (61,65 m².ha-1), estando entre uma das maiores já registradas para a Floresta Ombrófila Mista. O índice de diversidade de espécies de Shannon (H’ = 2,67 nats.ind-1) está na faixa observada em outros estudos na formação Altomontana. Por meio de análises multivariadas, constatou-se baixa heterogeneidade florística na comunidade, já que as principais espécies, representadas em termos de densidade na matriz de análise, estão bem distribuídas por toda a floresta. O estudo descreve uma comunidade bem estruturada e com grande acúmulo de biomassa, mostrando a relevância da UC para a preservação desta importante, rara e ameaçada fitofisionomia em Minas Gerais. The Mixed Ombrophylous Forest is one of the most threatened forest ecosystems in the country and it is estimated that only about 3% of the original covering of this vegetation type has remained. In Minas Gerais state, these remaining forests are rare, restricted mainly to the south of the state. This study aimed to evaluate the structure, diversity and heterogeneity of tree layer species of a Mixed Ombrophylous Forest in its most extreme northern distribution (Minas Gerais state, Brazil). The study was conducted in Parque Estadual da Serra do Papagaio (PESP), which includes the only remaining of araucaria forest in a full protection Conservation Unit (CU) in Minas Gerais state. We allocated in the area 25 permanent plots of 20m x 10m (0.5 ha) and every shrub and tree vegetation with DBH ≥ 4.8 cm was measured, identified and the height was estimated. We measured 1,158 individuals, belonging to 41 species, 28 genera and 22 families. It was observed a community with a strong concentration of the importance values (IV) in the first three species (Podocarpus lambertii, Araucaria angustifolia and Myrceugenia bracteosa), that together add up 52.74% of total IV of the community. The basal area of the community was 30.82 m² (61.65 m².ha-1), being one of the largest ever registered for Mixed Ombrophylous Forests. The Shannon species diversity index (H’ = 2.67 nats.ind-1) was in the range observed in other studies of Upper Montane Mixed Ombrophylous Forest. Multivariate analysis indicated a low floristic heterogeneity in the community; however, this low heterogeneity occurred because the main species in terms of density are also the most frequent and are distributed throughout the forest. The study shows a well-structured community with large accumulation of biomass, showing the importance of the conservation unit for the preservation of this important, rare and threatened vegetation type in Minas Gerais state.

This study was conducted in Araucaria Forest remnants in the municipality of Colombo, eastern Paraná state, Brazil. Data on species occurrence, life forms and dispersal syndromes were collected once a week along a 9 km transect, revealing the presence of 512 species among trees (n = 135), shrubs (n = 121), herbs (n = 157), climbers (n = 70), epiphytes (n = 24) and hemiparasites (n = 5). Of 469 species classified according to dispersal syndromes, 42.4% were zoochoric, 33.6% autochoric and 23.8% anemochoric. The high richness observed, the highest among similar studies previously conducted in the Araucaria Forest, along with the occurrence of endangered species of trees (and mammals), indicates that the study area is an important remnant for biodiversity conservation.

Bibimys is a genus still poorly known in its basic aspects, such as systematics, natural history and geographic distribution. In Brazil, only Bibimys labiosus is recorded, with occasional records spread in time and space. This paper presents four new localities of the species in Araucaria Forest, Paraná state, extending its distribution 150 km southwards. Additionally, a map of the known distribution of the species in Brazil and in Araucaria Forest is provided. The records point toward the lack of knowledge about basic aspects of the small non-flying mammal fauna in the plateau regions of Brazil.

Ocotea porosa (Ness) Barroso (Lauraceae), a typical tree of the southern Atlantic Forest in Brazil, was heavily exploited for timber in the last century. With the aim of examining the status of the remaining populations, we surveyed five forest fragments in the state of Paraná, in southern Brazil, and evaluated whether disturbances caused by selective logging and fragmentation were related to population structure of O. porosa. We assessed demographic aspects related to tree density, size hierarchy and individual allometry, correlating those parameters with fragment structure variables (fragment size, isolation and logging level). We found that, although all populations occurred in low densities (60-440 individuals ha−¹), the number of adults was significantly lower in the smaller and most disturbed fragments (13 and 35 individuals ha−¹, respectively). We did not detect changes in allometric relationships among individuals in the five populations studied. However, we found that populations in more heavily disturbed areas presented lower size hierarchy (i.e., less dominance of larger trees) than did those in undisturbed areas, suggesting that selective logging affects the population structure of O. porosa, possibly affecting the rates of reproduction and fecundity, which may ultimately increase the probability of local extinction.

Forest edges typically exhibit higher luminosity and lower humidity than the forest interior, resulting in an abiotic gradient. However, the degree of abiotic difference can be affected from the type of the matrix, influencing the selection of species. We compared the floristic and phytosociological structure of understory communities of ferns and lycophytes of the edge and interior of three forest sites influenced by different types of surrounding matrices (natural field, Pinus plantation, and cultivation of crops). In the region of Araucaria Forest, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, twelve 10 × 10 m plots were selected at the edge and interior of each site, totaling 72 plots and to evaluate the phytosociological contrast, using as a parameter coverage and species richness per plot to evaluate this contrast. We recorded a total of 38 species in the studied areas, distributed in 15 families. The results show that the edge effect acts at different intensities in the analyzed sites. In the site with unnatural matrix, the composition was more homogeneous both in the edges and in the interiors and presented lower richness, showing a more pronounced and deep impact. Already in the site with natural matrix surroundings, although the border also presents low richness, the interior was about 3x richer. Based on our results, we concluded that fern conservation efforts should focus on fragments of Araucaria Forest inserted in the natural field, because the conversion of natural field into Pinus planting and cultivation of crops decreases ferns species both in the edges and forest interiors of the studied fragments, besides altering the phytosociological structure leading the communities to simplification. Resumo Bordas florestais tipicamente exibem maior luminosidade e menor umidade que o interior florestal, resultando em um gradiente abiótico. Entretanto, o grau de diferença abiótica pode ser afetado a partir do tipo da matriz, influenciando a seleção de espécies. Comparamos a composição florística e a estrutura fitossociológica das comunidades de samambaias e licófitas na borda e interior de três sítios influenciados por diferentes matrizes (campo natural, plantio de Pinus e cultivo de olerícolas). Na região de Floresta com Araucária no Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, foram sorteadas doze parcelas de 10 × 10 m na borda e no interior de cada sítio, totalizando 72 parcelas para avaliar o contraste fitossociológico, utilizando como parâmetro cobertura e riqueza das espécies por parcela para avaliar esse contraste. Registramos um total de 38 espécies nas áreas estudadas, distribuídas em 15 famílias. Os resultados mostraram que o efeito de borda atua em intensidades distintas nos sítios analisados. Nos sítios com matriz antropizada, a composição foi mais homogênea tanto nas bordas, quanto nos interiores e apresentou menor riqueza, demonstrando impacto mais pronunciado e profundo. Já no sítio com matriz de entorno natural, apesar da borda também apresentar baixa riqueza, o interior foi cerca de 3x mais rico. Sugerimos que os esforços de conservação de samambaias e licófitas em fragmentos com araucária, devem se concentrar em sítios inseridos em campo natural, pois, a conversão destes em plantio de Pinus e cultivo de olerícolas, diminui a diversidade dessas plantas, tanto nas bordas quanto nos interiores da floresta, além de alterar a estrutura fitossociológica levando as comunidades à simplificação.

RESUMO As mudanças na composição florística, na estrutura fitossociológica e os processos dinâmicos do crescimento: ingresso, mortalidade e incremento foram estudados no período de 2007 e 2009 em todos os indivíduos arbóreos com DAP ≥ 5 cm em um fragmento de Floresta Ombrófila Mista Montana em Boa Ventura do São Roque, no Paraná, Brasil. Os resultados apontaram a ocorrência de 2596 ind.ha-1, 25 famílias, 40 gêneros e 45 espécies, em 2007, ao ponto que, no levantamento realizado em 2009, computaram-se 2558 ind.ha-1, 27 famílias, 41 gêneros e 47 espécies, sendo Matayba elaeagnoides Radlk. a espécie mais importante nos dois levantamentos. A floresta apresentou mortalidade de 0,41% ao ano e ingresso de 1,75% ao ano de modo que a dinâmica se produz de forma gradativa, com um incremento médio anual de 0,328 cm.ano-1. Com base nos parâmetros avaliados, conclui-se que o fragmento se encontra em processo de regeneração. ABSTRACT Changes in floristic composition, phytosociological structure and dynamic processes like ingrowth, mortality and diameter increment were studied between 2007 and 2009 in all trees with DBH ≥ 5 cm in a fragment of Montane Araucaria Forest in Boa Ventura do São Roque, Paraná, Brazil. The analyses showed the occurrence 2596 ind.ha-1, 25 families, 40 genera and 45 species, while in the survey conducted in 2009, 2558 indivuals.ha-1, 27 families, 41 genera and 47 species were registered, with Matayba elaeagnoides Radlk. being the most important species in both surveys. The forest fragment showed a mortality rate of 0.41% per year and recruitment of 1.75% per year. This indicates that the dynamics take place in a gradual manner, with a mean annual increment (MAI) of 0.328 cm.year-1. Based on the evaluated parameters, it follows that the fragment is in process of regeneration.

We report the rediscovery of the hummingbird Heliodoxa rubricauda (Boddaert, 1783) in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul after nearly 130 years without confirmed records. We captured 3 males and 1 female, and found 2 other birds (including an immature) at 3 sites in the municipalities of São Francisco de Paula and Cambará do Sul, in the northeast of the state. All records were at the top of the Southern Brazilian Plateau escarpment, at altitudes of about 900 m and near the southern limit of the Atlantic Forest.

Studies about dispersal syndromes and spatial distribution can provide information about species ecology. However, few studies analyze these ecological patterns in different vegetation layers. In this work, we verified the relationship between the dispersion syndromes and the spatial distribution in different layers in Araucaria Forest. We sampled 180 plots with size and inclusion criteria that changed according to the vegetative layer. We sampled 15,545 individuals in 103 tree species. We found significant differences between the number of species in the dispersion syndromes (χ2 = 11.52; P ≤ 0.05) and spatial distribution patterns (χ2 = 10.94; P ≤ 0.05), being zoochoric and tends to clustering the most predominant. We also found a significant interaction between the dispersion syndromes and spatial distribution patterns in the analyzed layers (F = 1,044; P < 0.0001), with anemochoric species characterized by random distribution, autochoric in the cluster distribution and zoochoric in the tends to clustering. The results demonstrate that the tree species of the different layers are related to the type of dispersion and the aggregation pattern.

RESUMO O presente estudo teve como principal objetivo avaliar a dinâmica de populações de espécies arbóreas, em um fragmento de Floresta Ombrófila Mista Montana, no Município de Lages, Santa Catarina - SC, ao longo de um período de quatro anos (2008-2012). Para isto, para todas as espécies amostradas em 50 parcelas permanentes de 10 x 20 m, foram determinadas as guildas de regeneração [Pioneiras (P), Climácicas Exigentes em Luz (CEL) e Climácicas Tolerantes ao Sombreamento (CTS)] e as taxas de dinâmica (mortalidade, recrutamento, ganho e perda em área basal, mudança líquida em abundância e área basal). A existência de associação significativa entre as guildas de regeneração e os padrões de dinâmica foi verificada por meio de testes de qui-quadrado, aplicados a tabelas de contingência. Mudanças das participações relativas das guildas de regeneração entre os anos foram analisadas por meio de testes de proporção. No ano 2008 foram verificadas 87 espécies (P: 9, CEL: 64, CTS: 11 e não classificadas: 3), 1.841 ind.ha-1 e 36,17m2.ha-1. Em 2012, verificaram-se 86 espécies (P: 9, CEL: 63, CTS: 11, não classificadas: 3), 1.882 ind.ha-1 e 39,17m2.ha-1. A maior parte das espécies apresentou ganho em abundância e área basal. Dentre as mais abundantes, as maiores taxas de recrutamento e ganho em área basal foram observadas para Banara tomentosa Clos, com, respectivamente, 5,43%.ano-1 e 6,08%.ano-1, e as maiores taxas de mortalidade e perda em área basal ocorreram para Zanthoxylum rhoifolium Lam., com, respectivamente, 7,75%.ano-1 e 4,74%.ano-1. Não foi verificada associação significativa entre os padrões de dinâmica observados e guildas de regeneração, cujas participações relativas na comunidade no período avaliado, permaneceram constantes. Desta forma, conclui-se que o fragmento florestal se encontra em fase de instabilidade estrutural, indicada pelo incremento no número de indivíduos e área basal, e estabilidade florística sucessional, em função da baixa substituição florística e manutenção da importância relativa das guildas de regeneração ao longo do tempo avaliado. ABSTRACT The present study aimed to evaluate the tree species population dynamics in a fragment of Montane Araucaria Forest, in the municipality of Lages, Santa Catarina (SC) state, along a period of four years (2008-2012). For this, for all species sampled, in 50 permanent plots of 10x20m, the regeneration guilds [pioneer (P), light-demanding climax (LDC) and shade-tolerant climax (STC)] and dynamics rates were determined (mortality, recruitment, loss and gain in basal area, net change in abundance and basal area). The existence of significant association between regeneration guilds and dynamic rates was verified by chi-square tests, applied to contingency tables. Changes in relative participation of regeneration guilds between years were analyzed using proportion tests. In 2008, 87 species were found (P: 9, LDC: 64, STC: 11, non-classified: 3), 1.841 ind.ha-1 and 36.17 m².ha-1. In 2012, 86 species (P: 9, LDC: 63, STC: 11, non-classified: 3), 1.882 ind.ha-1 and 39.17 m².ha-1 were observed. Most species showed gains in basal area. Among the most abundant, the highest rates of recruitment and basal area gain were observed for Banara tomentosa Clos, with, respectively, 5.43%.year-1 and 6.08%.year-1, and the highest rates of mortality and basal area loss occurred for Zanthoxylum rhoifolium Lam., with, respectively, 7.75%.year-1 and 4.74%.year-1. No significant association between the dynamics patterns and regeneration guilds was observed, whose relative participations in the community, during the evaluated period, were constants. Therefore, it is possible to conclude that the forest fragment is in the process of structural instability, indicated by the increment of the number of individuals and basal area, and floristic-successional stability, due to the low floristic substitution and maintenance of the relative importance of the regeneration guilds, along the evaluated period.

RESUMO O presente estudo teve como objetivos conhecer a organização da comunidade e a estruturação filogenética do componente arbóreo de um fragmento de Floresta Nebular em Urubici - SC. Para isso, foram alocadas 25 parcelas de 400 m2, nas quais foi medida a circunferência a altura do peito - CAP, e identificadas todas as árvores com CAP igual ou superior a 15,7 cm. Foram calculados o índice de diversidade de Shannon-Wiener e os descritores fitossociológicos. A síndrome de dispersão de propágulos e a distribuição espacial de cada espécie foram determinadas. A estruturação filogenética foi avaliada por meio dos valores de Mean pairwise distance (MPD) e de Net Relatedness Index (NRI), calculados a partir de uma árvore filogenética construída em função das espécies amostradas, de uma matriz de abundância das espécies por parcelas e 1.000 simulações de uma comunidade organizada filogeneticamente de forma aleatória. A estruturação espacial das métricas filogenéticas foi analisada por meio do Índice I de Moran. Foram amostrados 1.579 indivíduos, pertencentes a 33 espécies, sendo Myrtaceae a família de maior riqueza de espécies. O baixo valor de diversidade (2,43), associado à baixa riqueza na área, é esperado em Florestas Nebulares, cujo ambiente é tipicamente seletivo. A maior representação na floresta foi de Myrceugenia euosma (O.Berg) D.Legrand (VI = 24,51%). A síndrome de dispersão predominante foi a zoocoria (84,85%), seguida pela anemocoria (15,15%), e a distribuição espacial foi predominantemente agregada. A comunidade apresentou variação em relação à estruturação filogenética, sendo que, para a maioria das parcelas, o padrão não diferiu do modelo nulo de completa aleatoriedade. ABSTRACT This study aimed to survey the community organization and the phylogenetic structure of tree species component in a nebular forest, in the municipality of Urubici, Santa Catarina state. A total of 25 plots (400 m2) were allocated, where all trees with circumference at breast height (cbh) equal or superior than 15.7 cm were measured (cbh) and identified. The Shannon index and phytosociological descriptors were determined. The dispersal syndromes of propagules were determined and the spatial distribution of each species was analyzed. The phylogenetic structure was evaluated by the values of 'Mean Pairwise Distance' (MPD) and Net Relatedness Index (NRI), determined through a phylogenetic tree built in function of the species sampled, an abundance matrix of species by plots and 1,000 simulations of a community with phylogenetic randomness organization. The spatial structure of the phylogenetic metrics was analyzed through I Moran Index. A total of 1,579 trees were sampled, belonging to 33 species, with Myrtaceae as the richest family. The low value of diversity (2.43), associated to low richness, is expected for nebular forest, where the environment is typically selective. The most representative species in the forest was Myrceugenia euosma (O.Berg) D.Legrand (VI = 24.51%). The predominant dispersal syndrome was zoochory (84.85%), followed by anemochory (15.15%); and the species showed predominantly a clustered spatial distribution. The community had variation in relation to the phylogenetic structure, with most plots showing no significant difference from the null model of complete randomness.

Podium angustifrons Kohl 1902 is a species of solitary wasp which nests in pre-existing cavities, with neotropical distribution in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Guyana and French Guyana. The aim of this study was to investigate the nesting biology of P. angustifrons, discussing aspects of their life history. To capture its nests, wooden trap-nests were installed in the Parque Municipal das Araucárias, Guarapuava (PR), Brazil, from January 2003 to April 2009. A total of 29 nests were collected, all during the warmer months. These showed no vestibular and intercalary cells, and their closures were made up of chewed plants and mud mixed with organic materials and resin-coated surfaces, sometimes showing a layer of lichens. The cells were provisioned with various wild species of cockroaches (Chorisoneura sp, Riata sp and Helgaia sp) in the nymph stage and/or adults. The sex ratio was 4.6 females per male, significantly higher that the expected 1:1. Most pre-pupae entered diapause in winter with development time ranging from 187 to 283 days for females and 180 to 283 days for males. Deaths occurred in 41.66% of cells provisioned, 33.33% were attributed to faulty development and 8.33% to Chrysididae.

This paper aims at characterizing the tree species natural regeneration and evaluating the relation of this stratum to both the adult component and the environmental variables in a fragment of a cloud forest in Santa Catarina, Brazil. In each of 25 20 × 20 m plots, where the adult component and environmental variables have previously been evaluated, subplots of different sizes varying according to plants' height were then allocated as follows: Class 1 - plants with a height varying from 0.15 cm up to 1 m, being evaluated within 5 m2; Class 2 - plants with a height varying from 1 up to 3 m, being evaluated within 10 m2; Class 3 - plants with a height greater than 3 m and DBH smaller than 5 cm, being evaluated within 20 m2. Data have been analyzed with regard to the determination of diversity (Shannon index), evenness (Pielou), Natural Regeneration Index (NRI), similarity with the adult component (Jaccard and Bray-Curtis), floristic-structural organization (Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling - NMDS) and their relation to environmental variables. A total of 518 individuals distributed in 28 species were sampled. The low values of Shannon index (2.51 nat/ind) and evenness (0.75) suggest low diversity and elevated ecological dominance. The highest NRI has been found in the species Symphyopappus itatiayensis (Hieron.) R.M.King & H.Rob (19.36%). RESUMO Os conhecimentos florístico e estrutural da comunidade arbórea são fundamentais para subsidiar estratégias de restauração florestal. Neste sentido, foi realizado um levantamento fitossociológico em um fragmento florestal situado nas margens de um tributário do Rio Caeté em Alfredo Wagner, SC, objetivando: i) conhecer a estrutura e a florística da vegetação arbórea dessa floresta; ii) classificar as espécies encontradas em grupos ecológicos e iii) comparar a florística da área estudada com outros estudos realizados em Floresta Ombrófila Mista (FOM), Floresta Ombrófila Densa (FOD) e área de transição entre FOM-FOD de Santa Catarina. Nesse fragmento foram alocadas 10 parcelas de 400 m2 onde todos os indivíduos arbóreos que apresentaram Circunferência a Altura do Peito (CAP, medido a 1,30 m do solo) igual ou superior a 15,7 cm foram medidos, marcados e identificados. As espécies foram classificadas nos grupos sucessionais: pioneira, clímax exigente de luz ou clímax tolerante à sombra. Para a comparação florística com outros remanescentes, foi utilizada a Análise de Correspondência Retificada (DCA). A estrutura do componente arbóreo foi descrita pela densidade, frequência, dominância e Valor de Importância (VI). Os resultados demonstram elevada riqueza florística (98 espécies). Foi possível constatar espécies típicas de FOM, como Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) Kuntze, e espécies características de FOD, como Byrsonima ligustrifolia A.Juss., confirmando a característica do fragmento estudado de pertencer a uma área de tensão ecológica, padrão confirmado na comparação da similaridade florística. As espécies com maior VI foram Psychotria vellosiana Benth., Alsophila setosa Kaulf. e Guatteria australis A.St.-Hil. Estas e outras espécies de alto VI, por suas consideráveis representatividades na área, são importantes na restauração de florestas ciliares degradadas na região. Os plantios deverão ser planejados obedecendo-se ao grupo sucessional das espécies, plantando-se as espécies pioneiras e clímax exigentes de luz em um primeiro momento (e.g. Psychotria vellosiana), seguidas, quando houver o sombreamento da área, das espécies clímax tolerantes à sombra (e.g. Alsophila setosa e Guatteria australis). ABSTRACT The understanding of floristic and structure of tree communities is essential to subside the strategies of forest restoration. In this sense, a phyto-sociological survey was conducted in a forest fragment situated along a tributary of Caeté river, in Alfredo Wagner, state of Santa Catarina, in order to: i) know the structure of trees and flora in this forest, ii) classify the species found according to ecological groups and iii) compare the flora of the study area with other studies in Araucaria forest (FOM), Atlantic Rain Forest (FOD) and the transition area between FOM-FOD of Santa Catarina state. In this fragment, 10 plots of 400 m2 were allocated, where all individual trees with the circumference at breast height (CBH, measured at 1.30 m above the ground) greater than or equal to 15.7 cm were measured, marked and identified. The species were classified into the following succession groups: pioneer, climax light-demanding or climax shade-tolerant. The Rectified Correspondence Analysis (DCA) was used for the floristic comparison. The structure of the tree component was described by the density, frequency, dominance and importance value (VI). The results showed elevated species richness (98 species). It was found typical species of FOM, such as Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) Kuntze, and species characteristics of FOD such as Byrsonima ligustrifolia A.Juss., confirming the study fragment as an area of ecological tension between FOM and FOD. The species with most elevated VI were Psychotria vellosiana Benth., Alsophila setosa Kaulf. and Guatteria australis A.St.- Hil. The species with elevated VI, for their considerable representation in the area, are important in the restoration of degraded riparian forests in the region. The species seedlings plantation should be planned observing the group successional of each species, planting pioneer and light-demanding climax species first (e.g. Psychotria vellosiana), followed by, after the shading of the area, shade-tolerant species (e.g. Alsophila setosa e Guatteria australis).

RESUMO Rubiaceae no Brasil ocorre principalmente no Bioma Mata Atlântica que na região sul é representado por dois tipos principais de fitofisionomias: Floresta Estacional Semidecidual e Floresta Ombrófita Mista. Ambas ocorrem no Parque Ecológico Paulo Gorski (PEPG), fragmento florestal urbano. Diante da relevância de Rubiaceae na Mata Atlântica e da importância de estudos de anatomia ecológica para entender processos de colonização e sobrevivência este estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar anatomicamente as folhas de Rubiaceae encontradas no PEPG. Foram estudadas 14 espécies pertencentes a nove gêneros de Rubiaceae que apresentam como caracteres comuns à família: epiderme uniestratificada, tricomas, estômatos paracíticos e paralelocíticos, mesofilo dorsiventral e feixes vasculares colaterais. Dentre os caracteres anatômicos observados, considerados comuns em plantas mesófitas-heliófitas, destacam-se papilas, tricomas e mesofilo compacto. Portanto, essas características estão de acordo com as condições ambientais constatadas nas áreas de bordas e clareiras da Mata Atlântica e também em áreas antropizadas. ABSTRACT Rubiaceae in Brazil occurs mainly in the Atlantic Forest biome that in the southern region is represented by two main vegetation types: Seasonal Semi-deciduous Forestand Araucaria Forest. Both occur in the Ecological Park Paul Gorski (PEPG), an urban forest fragment. Given the relevance of Rubiaceae in the Atlantic Forest and the importance of ecological anatomy studies to understand colonization and survival processes, this study aimed to anatomically characterize leaves of Rubiaceae found in the PEPG. We studied 14 species belonging to nine genera of Rubiaceae that present unistratified epidermis, trichomes, paracytic and paralelocytic stomata, dorsiventral mesophyll, and collateral vascular bundles as common characters to the family. Among the anatomical characters observed, considered common in mesophytes-heliophytes plants, stand papillae, trichomes, and compact mesophyll out. Therefore, these features are in accordance with the environmental conditions recorded in the area of edges and clearings of the Atlantic Forest and in disturbed areas.

O presente estudo objetivou conhecer os padrões da composição florística e estrutural do componente arbóreo de um trecho de remanescente de Floresta Ombrófila Mista Montana em Campos Novos - SC e determinar as variáveis ambientais que influenciam estes padrões. Para isso, foi amostrado 1 ha de floresta por meio de 50 parcelas de 10 × 20 m dispostas de forma sistemática, distanciada 30 m entre si, no remanescente florestal. Dentro das parcelas foram identificados e mensurados (circunferência medida a altura do peito, CAP, e altura total) CAP, e altura total) todos os indivíduos arbóreos vivos com CAP ≥ 15,7 cm. Os dados ambientais relacionados às propriedades químicas e físicas dos solos e à topografia também foram coletados em cada parcela. Foram calculados o índice de Shannon-Wiener (H'), a equabilidade de Pielou (J') e os estimadores fitossociológicos. A organização florístico-estrutural do fragmento foi analisada por meio de uma NMDS (Nonmetric multidimensional scalling). As variáveis ambientais foram ajustadas a posteriori à ordenação produzida, sendo aquelas significativas (p < 0,05) plotadas na forma de vetores. Foram amostrados 1.027 indivíduos, que totalizaram uma área basal de 43,57 m2, distribuídos em 88 espécies e 41 famílias botânicas. A diversidade do remanescente estudado foi relativamente alta (H'=3,59) e a dominância baixa (J'=0,80). A espécie de maior VI foi Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze (14,44%). A análise multivariada NMDS indicou um gradiente florístico-estrutural relacionado à cota média (altitude), saturação de bases, pH e teores de P nos solos. In order to identify the floristic and structure patterns of the tree component and to determine the environmental variables that influence these patterns in a sector of montane Araucaria Forest remnant, 50 plots of 10 × 20 m were allocated, using systematic sampling, 30m apart from each other, in Campos Novos, SC. Within the plots, all living trees with cbh (circumference at breast height) ≥ 15,7 cm were identified and measured (cbh and total height). Environmental data related to chemical and physical properties of soils and topography were also collected from each sampled plot. To describe the tree vegetation richness, diversity and structure, the Shannon-Wiener index (H'), the Pielou evenness index (J') and the phytosociological estimates were obtained. The floristic and structural organization of the fragment was analyzed through a NMDS (Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling). The environmental variables were fitted a posteriori in the produced ordination, being those significant (p < 0.05) plotted as vectors. A total 1.027 individuals were sampled, which represented a basal area of 43.57 m2, distributed in 88 species and 41 families. The diversity of the fragment studied was relatively high (H'=3.59) with low dominance (J'=0.80). The specie with higher VI was Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze (14.44%). The NMDS indicated a floristic-structural gradient related to the mean elevation (altitude), soil base saturation, soil pH and P soil content.

RESUMO Objetivou-se levantar o potencial terapêutico de espécies arbóreas presentes em remanescentes de Floresta Ombrófila Mista (FOM) localizados no Planalto Sul Catarinense, destacando as que possuem ações terapêuticas atestadas em ensaios científicos, assim como, aquelas com potencial medicinal segundo registros etnobotânicos. Para amostrar a composição florística arbórea foi empregado o método de quadrantes, registrando-se os indivíduos mais próximos do ponto central, que apresentassem DAP ≥ 5 cm. A amostragem foi realizada em Áreas de Preservação Permanente (APP’s) e/ou Reserva Legal, com o auxílio de 20 transecções contendo 20 pontos quadrantes cada, totalizando 2,61 hectares. Dentre as 97 espécies registradas e identificadas no levantamento, 16 possuem ação medicinal descrita e atestada em literatura e 12 espécies são descritas como potenciais de acordo com conceitos etnobotânicos. O presente estudo mostrou que pequenos remanescentes florestais podem contribuir para a manutenção de espécies da FOM e basear futuros estudos sobre plantas medicinais ou com outros potenciais bioativos. ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the medicinal potential of tree species in Araucaria Forest (FOM) remnants in Santa Catarina Plateau, highlighting those with therapeutic actions attested in scientific trials, as well as those with medicinal potential according to ethnobotanical records. The floristic composition was sampled through the point-centered quarter method, registering the individuals with DBH ≥ 5 cm closest to the center point. Sampling was conducted in Permanent Preservation Areas (APP’s) and/or Legal Reserve, with the help of 20 transects with 20 points quadrants each, totaling 2.61 hectares. Among the species recorded and identified, 16 of them, classified into 13 plant families, have medicinal potential described and attested in literature and 12 species within 10 families, are suggested as potential, according to ethnobotanical concepts. The present study showed that these sites may contribute to the maintenance of species of FOM and to base future studies on medicinal plants and/or other bioactive potential.

The present study reveals palaeoenvironmental changes in the coastal southern Brazilian highlands during the last 39720 b.p., by the means of pollen, charcoal and multivariate data analyses. The isolated mountain range of Serra do Tabuleiro corresponds to the southern distribution limit of many tropical plant species and is therefore sensitive to climate change. Palaeoenvironmental reconstructions from the Ciama 2 core at 860 m a.s.l. indicate that Campos (subtropical grassland) covered extensive areas on the highlands throughout the recorded glacial period, thus suggesting cold and dry climatic conditions. The initial development of the Atlantic rainforest occurred after the glacial period, whereas plant diversity began to increase at the beginning of the Holocene due to climate change towards warmer and wetter conditions. At about 10400 cal. b.p., the Atlantic rainforest started to move over the slopes and Campos retracted. Multivariate data analysis showed a change of vegetation dynamics after 11200 cal. b.p. with the initial development of the Atlantic rainforest continuing until the mid-Holocene. Major vegetation changes, including the further expansion of the Atlantic rainforest and the initial development of the Araucaria forest in the higher regions of the Serra do Tabuleiro, occurred during the late Holocene after about 3600 cal. b.p. These changes reflect higher precipitation levels without an annual dry season. Multivariate data analysis reveals a clearly directional change of vegetation dynamics corresponding to the progressive expansion of the Atlantic rainforest from 3850 to 1600 cal. b.p. A second directional change of vegetation dynamics occurred from 320 to 160 cal. b.p. (a.d. 1630 to 1790) with a further development of the Atlantic rainforest and the partial replacement of Campos by Araucaria forest and Atlantic rainforest. Thereafter, an ecosystem disturbance, which resulted in forest opening, took place. Palaeofires probably did not occur during glacial times, whereas fire events, which were probably caused by Amerindians, were common in the Serra do Tabuleiro region from ca. 10400 until 3600 cal. b.p. peerReviewed

This study surveyed lycophyte and fern species in four forest fragments in western Parana, Brazil, and compared them to 15 other fragments with different plant formations from the Atlantic Forest biome in southern Brazil. In total, five lycophyte species (in two families and two genera) and 98 species and two varieties of ferns (in 16 families and 38 genera) were registered in the four fragments. The most represented families were Pteridaceae (23 spp.), Polypodiaceae (18 spp.), Aspleniaceae (13 spp.), and Thelypteridaceae (11 spp.). Asplenium (12 spp.), Thelypteris (10 spp.), and Blechnum (seven spp.) were among the most represented genera. The occurrence of Dicksonia sellowiana was noteworthy because it was associated with seasonal semideciduous forest and is threatened in Brazil. Similarity among areas was determined by a cluster analysis (UPGMA and Sorensen’s index) and the relation between similarity and geographic distance was determined through Matel’s analysis. The analyses revealed greater similarity among the four study areas and, for these areas as a whole, greater similarity to fragments in Rio Grande do Sul, which is evidence that these areas have similar environmental conditions.

The Brazilian Atlantic Rain Forest, one of the most endangered ecosystems worldwide, is also among the most important hotspots as regards biodiversity. Through intensive logging, the initial area has been reduced to around 12% of its original size. In this study we investigated the genetic variability and structure of the mountain lion, Puma concolor. Using 18 microsatellite loci we analyzed evidence of allele dropout, null alleles and stuttering, calculated the number of allele/locus, PIC, observed and expected heterozygosity, linkage disequilibrium, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, F(IS), effective population size and genetic structure (MICROCHECKER, CERVUS, GENEPOP, FSTAT, ARLEQUIN, ONESAMP, LDNe, PCAGEN, GENECLASS software), we also determine whether there was evidence of a bottleneck (HYBRIDLAB, BOTTLENECK software) that might influence the future viability of the population in south Brazil. 106 alleles were identified, with the number of alleles/locus ranging from 2 to 11. Mean observed heterozygosity, mean number of alleles and polymorphism information content were 0.609, 5.89, and 0.6255, respectively. This population presented evidence of a recent bottleneck and loss of genetic variation. Persistent regional poaching constitutes an increasing in the extinction risk.

Com o objetivo de contribuir com o conhecimento das borboletas de Curitiba, foram estudados dois parques municipais urbanos, o Jardim Botânico que possui área total de 178.000 m² e um bosque de Floresta Ombrófila Mista preservada restrito a pesquisa científica, e o Parque Municipal da Barreirinha que possui uma área total de 275.380 m² e a área utilizada para as amostragens de livre acesso a população, com predominância de vegetação reflorestada. Após 10 meses de amostragem, perfazendo 240 horas, foram registrados 787 indivíduos e 166 espécies, distribuídos nas famílias: Hesperiidae - 46 spp. (27,7%), Nymphalidae - 75 spp. (45,2%), Pieridae - 17 spp. (10,3%), Lycaenidae - 13 spp. (7,8%), Papilionidae - 8 spp. (4,8%) e Riodinidae - 7 spp. (4,2%), dentre estas 22 espécies são novos registros para Curitiba, pertencentes as famílias: Hesperiidae, Pieridae, Lycaenidae, Riodinidae e Nymphalidae. Das espécies registradas, apenas 33% são comuns a ambos os Parques, sendo que o índice de Similaridade de Sorensen de 48% confirma que cada um dos locais estudados possui lepidopterofauna característica e distinta um do outro. In order to contribute to the knowledge of butterflies of Curitiba, were studied two urban municipal parks, the Botanical Garden which has total area of 178,000 m² and has a grove of preserved Araucaria forest only for scientific research, and the Municipal Park of Barreirinha which has total area of 275,380 m² and the area used for sampling of free access to population, with predominance of reforested vegetation. After 10 months of sampling, totaling 240 hours, 787 individuals and 166 species were registered, distributed to the families: Hesperiidae - 46 spp. (27.7%), Nymphalidae - 75 spp. (45.2%), Pieridae - 17 spp. (10.3%), Lycaenidae - 13 spp. (7.8%), Papilionidae - 8 spp. (4.8%) and Riodinidae - 7 spp. (4.2%), among which 22 species are new records for Curitiba, belonging to the families: Hesperiidae, Pieridae, Lycaenidae, Riodinidae and Nymphalidae. About the recorded species, only 33% are considered common to the parks, Sorensen similarity index of 48% confirm that each location has a characteristic lepidopterofauna and distinct from each other.

Medium and large mammals (> 1 kg) were studied using camera traps with active sensors in a Conservation Unit located in an area of Mixed Rain Forest or Araucaria Forest (Atlantic Forest at altitude) in the South of Brazil, as a method for investigating the area’s conservation status and enabling comparison with other types of environments in which these mammals occur in the Neotropical region. From June 2005 to December 2010, a sampling effort of 10,844 trap-days yielded records of 21 species. A minimum sampling effort of 3000 trap-days was necessary to obtain records of all of these species. The species with the greatest frequency of photocaptures was Dasyprocta azarae (agouti), followed by Leopardus pardalis (ocelot) , Leopardus guttulus (southern oncilla or little spotted cat) and Dasypus novemcinctus (nine-banded armadillo). The species with the lowest numbers of records were Pecari tajacu (collared peccary) and Chrysocyon brachyurus (maned wolf). Although the Conservation Unit studied has small physical dimensions, the diversity of species of medium and large mammals was comparable with what has been observed in other types of forests, in particular because there are still effective biological corridors in the area.

The expectations that shade-tolerant forest species show 1) a population structure composed by a high amount of small individuals, and 2) biomass allocation for diameter higher than for height growth, were tested for Rudgea parquioides, a typical shrub in Southern Brazil. We described the size structure (height and stem diameter) and allometrical relations of a R. parquioides population by counting and measuring all the individuals in a 725m² area in the municipality of Curitiba (25"25'S; 49"19'W). A total of 916 individuals (12,634 ind.ha-1) were recorded in the area. The firstexpectation was supported, since distribution by height and diameter classes showed a predominance of small individuals (skewness coefficients > 1). On the other hand, the regression between height and stem base diameter showed slope β < 1, which indicates that growth in height is higher than in diameter, not supporting the second expectation. These results show that life strategies in shade-tolerant species may imply in more trade-off combinations than previously described.Foram testadas duas hipóteses relativas a espécies florestaistolerantes à sombra em uma população de Rudgea parquioides, um arbusto característico do sul do Brasil: 1) espécies tolerantes à sombra possuem uma estrutura populacional composta por um grande número de indivíduos pequenos e 2) a alocação de biomassa para o crescimento em diâmetro é maior que para o crescimento em altura. Foram descritas as estruturas de tamanho (altura e diâmetro do tronco) e relações alométricas através da contagem e medição de todos os indivíduos de R. parquioides em uma área de 725m² no município de Curitiba (25"25'S; 49"19'W). Um total de 916 indivíduos(12.634 ind.ha-1) foi medido nesta área. A primeira hipótese foi aceita, uma vez que a distribuição em classes de altura e de diâmetro mostrou um predomínio de indivíduos pequenos (coeficiente de assimetria > 1). Por outro lado, a regressão entre altura e diâmetro na base do caule mostrou inclinação β < 1, o que indica que o crescimento em altura é maior que em diâmetro, não suportando a segunda hipótese. Esses resultados mostram que as estratégias de crescimento em espécies tolerantes à sombra podem implicar em outras relações ecológicas além das já descritas.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different landscape structures on the understory Collembola community. Four different forest physiognomies were compared: Pinus spp. plantation, Eucalyptus spp. plantation, Araucaria angustifolia plantation, and a remaining native Araucaria forest. Three areas containing two sampling units (25 m x 2 m each) were selected in each forest physiognomy. Understory Collembola collection was done with a 1 x 1m canvas sheet held horizontally below the vegetation, which was beaten with a 1m long stick, seasonally from September 2003 to August 2004. We evaluated the influence of forest physiognomies on the abundance, richness and diversity of Collembola communities. It was also verified if the habitat structure of each physiognomy was associated with the composition of the Collembola community. A total number of 4,111 individuals were collected belonging to the families Entomobrydae and Tomocerida (Entomobryomorpha), and Sminthuridae (Symphypleona), and divided in 12 morphospecies. Pinus plantation presented the highest richness, abundance and diversity of Collembola and it was associated to diverse understory vegetation. The abundance of Entomobrydae and Sminthuridae was associated to the presence of bushes, while Tomoceridae abundance was associated to the presence of trees. The habitat structure, measured through understory vegetation density and composition, plays an important role on the determination of the structure and composition of the Collembola community. O propósito deste estudo foi investigar os efeitos da estrutura do sub-bosque na comunidade de colêmbolos. Foram comparados quatro ambientes florestais distintos: plantações de Pinus spp., plantações de Eucalyptus spp., plantações de Araucaria angustifolia e áreas de floresta ombrófila nativa remanescente. Para cada fisionomia vegetal houve três áreas com duas unidades amostrais de 25 m × 2 m cada. As coletas foram realizadas com guarda-chuva entomológico, medindo 1 m × 1 m, no período de setembro de 2003 a agosto de 2004. Investigou-se se a abundância, a riqueza e a diversidade da comunidade de colêmbolos foram influenciadas pelas fisionomias vegetais. Também verificou-se se a estrutura do habitat de cada tipo de floresta teve associação com a composição da comunidade de colêmbolos. Foram coletados 4111 indivíduos, pertencentes às famílias Entomobryidae, Tomoceridae e Sminthuridae, divididos em 12 morfoespécies. A plantação de Pinus spp. apresentou maior riqueza, abundância e diversidade de colêmbolos, devido à maior quantidade de vegetação disponível no sub-bosque. A composição de colêmbolos esteve associada aos tipos vegetacionais, com Entomobryidae e Sminthuridae associados aos arbustos, e Tomoceridade às árvores. A estrutura do habitat, medida através da densidade e composição da vegetação do sub-bosque mostrou-se um fator importante na determinação da estrutura e composição da comunidade de Collembola.

A fauna de abelhas da Mata com Araucária foi inventariada no entorno de um fragmento no município de Porto União, SC. Foram realizadas coletas mensais entre outubro/2005 e outubro/2006, com rede entomológica diretamente nas flores, além de três tipos de armadilha: iscas de cheiro, ninhos-armadilha e pratos-armadilha. Foram amostradas 1.711 abelhas pertencentes a 164 espécies, distribuídas nas cinco famílias de abelhas ocorrentes no Brasil. Do total, 1339 abelhas de 130 espécies foram amostradas com rede entomológica, 346 indivíduos de 72 espécies foram coletados nos pratos-armadilha, 24 abelhas de nove espécies foram capturadas através dos ninhos-armadilha e dois indivíduos de uma espécie foram amostrados com iscas de cheiro. No máximo 48 espécies de abelhas foram comuns a duas ou mais metodologias. Dialictus, com 27 espécies, foi o gênero mais representativo na área. A exótica Apis mellifera L. foi a espécie mais abundante, correspondendo a 49,6% dos indivíduos amostrados, seguida por Dialictus sp.11 com 3,2%. Os resultados mostram evidências de um padrão sazonal de atividade das abelhas e a importância da utilização de metodologias complementares na realização de levantamentos de apifauna. A composição da fauna de abelhas foi similar a vários trabalhos realizados em Mata com Araucária, sendo Halictidae a família mais diversa seguida por Apidae. A survey of the bee fauna of Araucaria Forest was performed in the border of a fragment in the district of Porto União, in Santa Catarina State. Samples were carried on monthly between October/2005 and October/2006 with hand nets directly on the flowers, besides three types of traps: chemical baits, trap nests and pantraps. A total of 1711 bees were captured belonging to 164 species, distributed in five families of bees that occur in Brazil. From the total 1339 bees of 130 species were sampled with the hand net, 346 individuals of 72 species were collected in pantraps, 24 bees of nine species were caught in the trap nests and two specimens of one species were sampled with baits. At most 48 species were common to two or more sample methods. Dialictus, with 27 species, was the most representative genus in the area. The exotic Apis mellifera L. was the most abundant species, representing 49.6% of the sampled bees, following by Dialictus sp.11 with 3.2%. The results show evidences of a seasonal pattern of activity of the bees and the importance of the use of complementary methods to survey the fauna. The composition of the bee fauna was similar to many inventories performed in the Araucaria Forest, being Halictidae the most diverse family followed by Apidae.

O grimpeiro Leptasthenura setaria é totalmente dependente do pinheiro-do-paraná Araucaria angustifolia e considerado quase ameaçado de extinção pela IUCN. Apresentam-se sete novas localidades de ocorrência do grimpeiro para o Estado de São Paulo, incluindo os primeiros espécimes coletados dentro dos seus limites. A espécie foi encontrada tanto em pinheiros-do-paraná nativos quanto em plantados e está presente em cinco unidades de proteção integral. The Araucaria Tit-Spinetail Leptasthenura setaria is found exclusively in Parana-Pine Araucaria angustifolia, being classified as near-threatened by IUCN. We present seven new localities to Araucaria Tit-Spinetail from São Paulo, including the first state specimens. This species was recorded in native or planted Parana-Pine, in five reserves.

RESUMOEste estudo teve por objetivo analisar como a distribuição e riqueza de espécies raras em fragmentos de Floresta Ombrófila Mista ocorrem ao longo de um gradiente altitudinal. Para isso, espécies arbóreas (diâmetro à altura do peito > 5 cm) foram amostradas em 10 fragmentos florestais localizados em diferentes pisos altitudinais do Planalto Sul-Catarinense, em uma área total de 10 ha. As espécies que apresentaram número de indivíduos igual ou inferior a 2 em pelo menos um fragmento foram classificadas como raras. A distribuição das espécies foi verificada por meio de dendrograma construído a partir do índice de distância florística de Jaccard e do algoritmo de agrupamento UPGMA. A riqueza total de espécies por fragmento e o número de espécies raras foram comparados entre as subformações montana e alto-montana, por meio do teste de Mann-Whitney (U). As relações entre altitude e os valores de riqueza total e número de espécies raras em cada fragmento foram determinadas por regressões lineares simples. Os resultados indicaram a formação de dois grandes grupos de espécies raras em função do piso altitudinal. Apesar de a riqueza total das comunidades reduzir com o aumento da altitude, o número de espécies raras não apresentou alterações significativas. Conclui-se que na região do Planalto Sul-Catarinense os fragmentos de Floresta Ombrófila Mista apresentam diferentes conjunto de espécies arbóreas raras de acordo com a altitude e que a diminuição da riqueza das comunidades com o aumento do piso altitudinal não é acompanhada pela redução do número de espécies raras. ABSTRACTThe present study aimed to analyze how the distribution and the richness of rare tree species occur along an altitudinal gradient, in Araucaria Forests fragments. For this purpose, tree species (diameter at breast height > 5 cm) were sampled in 10 forest fragments located on different altitudinal floors in “Planalto Sul-Catarinense” region, totaling 10 ha of sampling area. The species with only one or two individuals in at least one fragment were classified as rare. The species distribution was verified by a dendrogram constructed through the Jaccard floristic distance index and the UPGMA clustering algorithm. The total species richness per fragment and the number of rare species were compared among montane and upper-montane sub-formation by the Mann-Whitney (U) test. The relationship between altitude and values of total richness and number of rare species in each fragment were determined by simple linear regressions. The results indicated the formation of two groups of rare species, in function of the altitude floor. Despite the fact that total richness of communities decreased with increasing altitude, the number of rare tree species did not significantly change. We conclude that in the “Planalto Sul-Catarinense” region, the fragments of Araucaria Forest have different set of rare tree species according to altitude and that the reduction of the richness of communities with increasing altitudinal floor is not accompanied by a reduction in the number of rare species.

The flower-visiting social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Polistinae) in two areas of Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil. The structure of flower-visiting social wasps' assemblages in the CPCN Pró-Mata of São Francisco de Paula and in the Green Belt of Santa Cruz do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, are characterized. A total of 879 polistine wasps were collected, of which 475 (11 spp.) in the CPCN and 404 (21 spp.) in the Green Belt, from September 1997 to April 2001 and from September 2001 to April 2004, respectively. Foraging social wasps were observed on flowers of 36 species of angiosperms (20 families) in the Green Belt, and on flowers of 54 species of angiosperms (21 families) in the CPCN. Asteraceae was the most visited plant family on both studied localities. A list of pant species visited by the polistines is provided.Vespas sociais (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Polistinae) visitantes de flores em duas áreas no Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. A estrutura da assembléia de vespas sociais que visitam flores no CPCN Pró-Mata de São Francisco de Paula e no Cinturão Verde de Santa Cruz do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, são caracterizadas. Do total de 879 polistíneos, 475 (11 spp.) foram coletados no CPCN, e 404 (21 spp.) no Cinturão Verde entre Setembro de 1997 a Abril de 2000 e Setembro de 2001 a Abril de 2004, respectivamente. Vespas sociais foram observadas em flores de 36 espécies de angiospermas (20 famílias) no Cinturão Verde, e em flores de 54 espécies de angiospermas (21 famílias) no CPCN. Asteraceae foi a família de planta que mais recebeu visitas por parte das vespas nas duas localidades estudadas. Uma lista com as espécies de plantas visitadas pelos polistíneos é apresentada.

Como parte do Projeto PROVIVE, foram analisadas a riqueza de espécies, a composição taxonômica, a proporção de espécies raras e a constância taxonômica ao nível de família relacionada à riqueza de espécies, em comunidades de Coleoptera, em Vila Velha, Ponta Grossa, Paraná. Os dados foram obtidos a partir de coletas através de armadilha malaise no estrato do sub-bosque de cinco áreas com diferentes graus de intervenção antrópica, de setembro de 1999 a agosto de 2000. As 52 semanas de amostragem nas cinco áreas resultaram na coleta de 10.822 indivíduos de 1659 espécies. Todas as áreas apresentaram alta riqueza de espécies e diversidade, como indicado por vários índices. A área em estágio mais avançado de sucessão vegetal foi menos rica do que aquelas em estágio inicial/intermediária. De acordo com diferentes estimadores de riqueza de espécies, o número de espécies coletadas poderia aumentar de 22-123% com o aumento do esforço de coleta. As áreas menos conservadas foram mais ricas em espécies raras ("singletons", "doubletons" e únicas) do que as mais conservadas. Nas cinco áreas houve uma constância taxonômica entre as famílias mais ricas (Curculionidae, Chrysomelidae, Cerambycidae, Staphylinidae, Mordelidae, Elateridae, Scarabaeidae, Coccinellidae e Tenebrionidae) envolvendo 60% do total de espécies, como observado para a abundância de indivíduos. A existência de um padrão de constância taxonômica de famílias, quando considerados 60% da riqueza de espécies e/ou de abundância de indivíduos por local, poderá tornar mais fácil e rápido o estudo de comunidades de Coleoptera, habilitando a ordem a ser um táxon indicador de condições ambientais de áreas florestadas. The species richness, taxonomic composition, rare species, and taxonomic constancy at family level were studied in communities of Coleoptera in Vila Velha, Ponta Grossa, Paraná, as part of PROVIVE project. The data were gathered through malaise traps in the understory stratum of five sites with different floristic conditions product of anthropogenic effects, from September/1999 to August/2000. The 52 weeks sampling in the five sites produced 10,822 specimens of 1,659 species. All areas present high species richness and high diversity as indicated by various indices. The area in advanced condition of vegetation succession was less rich than ones in early/middle stage. According to different species richness estimators, the number of observed species could be increased by 22-123% if more time colleting effort had been made. The early successional stage areas were richer in rare species (singletons, doubletons and uniques) than the more preserved ones. In the five areas there were a taxonomic constancy among the richest families (Curculionidae, Chrysomelidae, Cerambycidae, Staphylinidae, Mordelidae, Elateridae, Scarabaeidae, Coccinellidae and Tenebrionidae) involving 60% of the total species as observed with the specimens abundance. If the existence of this pattern is confirmed, it will be easier and faster to study Coleoptera communities and soon apply this order as a forest environmental indicator taxon.

O presente artigo trata do delineamento semi-automático de copas de árvores através de suas sombras periféricas observadas em fotografia aérea de alta resolução. O estudo foi realizado em área de dois hectares de Floresta Ombrófila Mista da Floresta Nacional de Irati, PR, utilizando-se a técnica de interpretação, nos formatos analógico e digital, em uma fotografia aérea de 70 mm colorida normal, na escala de 1:1.000, e dados obtidos em campo. A metodologia consistiu na transformação das três bandas originais da fotografia colorida digital em apenas uma e na separação da componente sombra dos demais alvos restantes da imagem, através de um limiar. A partir dos resultados, verificou-se que: a) as sombras podem ser visualizadas em clareiras existentes na floresta, entre os galhos e entre as copas das árvores; b) a imagem resultante evidencia a inconsistência de se mapearem as copas exclusivamente pelas sombras periféricas; c) o resultado insatisfatório foi atribuído ao tipo de floresta natural considerado; d) a técnica mostrou-se promissora como ferramenta adicional de realce de imagem; e e) faz-se necessário desenvolver maior número de pesquisas para se obterem resultados conclusivos. This paper deals with the semi automatic delineation of crowns of trees on high resolution aerial photograph using their peripheral shadows. The study was carried out on 2 hectares of native Araucaria forest due to the avaliability of field data and the interpretation, in analogic and digital formats, of a 70 mm 1:1.000 high resolution aerial photograh . The methodology consisted in the transformation of the 3 original bands of the digital color photograph in only one, and then, through a threshold, the shadow component was separated from the other targets. From the results obtained, the main conclusions reached were: a) the shadows were due to the open areas on the forest among the branches and the crowns of the trees; b) the resultant image evidenced the inconsistency to delineate the crowns exclusively through their peripheral shadows; c) the inadequate result may be related to the type of natural forest and not to the technique itself; d) the used technique showed promising as an additional enhancement technique, and e) it is necessary to carry out more research in order to obtain conclusive results.

The Coleoptera fauna of Parque Estadual de Vila Velha, Ponta Grossa, Parana, was sampled during 52 weeks using malaise traps (from September 1999 to August 2000). Five different sites were selected according to floristic conditions: one site in initial stage of vegetacional succession; one in intermediate stage; one in advanced stage (recognized as a mature forest); one with an Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze plantation, invaded by native forest vegetation; and a fifth site in the edge area. The Coleoptera communities from the five sites were analyzed based on abundance and family richness. The total of specimens collected was 10,822 belonging to 64 families. The most abundant sites were those in initial and intermediate stages of plant succession; the abundance in the edge area was the lowest. The family richness is not related with the level of preservation of the sites. The beetle community structures of the five sites were not significantly different when involving all the families captured; but the more correlated pair-wise site structures reflected the vegetational stages of the sites. A temporal comparison of the beetle community structures was made, based on data gathered in one of the selected site which were sampled 13 years ago (1986/1987). The fauna collected in this year was more related with that of the initial stage of succession, in 1999/2000, than the one collected in the same area, in 1999/2000, nowadays considered as an intermediate stage of succession. This fact probably represents a parallel succession of fauna and flora. The dominant families, about 60% of total abundance, include Chrysomelidae, Curculionidae, Cerambycidae, Elateridae and Staphylinidae. Eventually, one or two of them, were substituted by Scarabaeidae, Ptilodactylidae, Cleridae, Coccinellidae, Lampyridae, Scolytidae, Cucujidae, Nitidulidae, Cantharidae, Scirtidae and Phengodidae. As observed in Vila Velha and other localities, there are a taxonomic family constancy among the most abundant Coleoptera families when using malaise traps. However, there were significant differences among the beetle community structures of the five areas in Vila Velha when only the seven most abundant families were included in the analysis.

Observations and recordings of Picumnus nebulosus Sundevall, 1866 were carried out at Santa Rita farm (21º15'S, 50º00'), municipality of Palmeira, state of Paraná, southern Brazil, from 1984 to 1991. The song of this species (0.25 s to 0.64 s total time) is composed by a series of four to six high pitched (6.3 to 7.8 kHz) and short (0.03 to 0.05 s) notes (n=23). The fight call is a series of very short notes emitted between 2 to 8 kHz during 0.23 s to 0.32 s (n=34). The drum, a sequence of pulses, is emitted during 3.5 to 7.2 s (n=42); the four sequences in the begining are composed by four pulses and the rest by three pulses. P. nebulosus was more abundant in forest patches than in continuous forest. It was usually watched foraging in branches 1 to 4 mm diameter at mid-level; foraging in bamboo, the most common habitat cited in the literature, was registered in less than 10% of the observations.

The Atlantic Forest is considered a biodiversity hotspot for conservation, because its fauna and flora are highly endemic and suffer from loss of natural habitats. This study assessed the composition and diversity of tiger moths (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) in two floristic formations of the southern Atlantic Forest (grassland and Araucaria forest) and in a transition zone (forest edge). The moths were attracted to UV light reflected onto a white sheet. A total of 3,574 tiger moths were collected, representing 121 species. The rarefaction curves showed that the tiger-moth assemblage collected in the grassland was more diverse than the assemblages from the Araucaria forest and the transition zone. The assemblages in the forest and forest edge resembled each other, whereas the grassland assemblage was distinct. The composition of the tiger-moth assemblages was related to the environmental characteristics [habitat type (grassland, edge, or forest), altitude, temperature, air relative humidity] and the location of the sites. The faunal similarity decreased in response to increasing environmental and geographical distances between the sites. The responsiveness of tiger moths to small-scale variation in environmental and geographical parameters indicates their good potential as environmental indicators.
