The Gyromitra gigas species complex includes six morphologically similar taxa, several of which have a long history of segregation, synonymization, and rearrangement among different genera. These taxa occur throughout Asia, Europe, and North America and include G. gigas, G. khanspurensis, G. korfii, G. montana, G. pseudogigas, and G. ticiniana. ITS and LSU sequences from 66 specimens, including type specimens for all six taxa, were included in phylogenetic analyses to establish species boundaries and resolve species relationships. Sequence similarity comparisons were also conducted between the two molecular markers and between the ITS1 and ITS2 regions. Although ITS exhibited sufficient variability to discriminate among species in the G. gigas species complex, LSU displayed very low variability rendering it completely useless as a molecular marker for separating taxa in this group. The ITS1 region was twice as informative as the ITS2 region and can be used as a barcode marker to identify these species. Gyromitra gigas and G. montana occur as a well-supported clade of sister species and can be distinguished based on ascospore morphology. Gyromitra korfii and G. ticiniana also form a highly supported clade and are considered distinct species based on geography. Gyromitra littiniana is confirmed to be synonymous with G. ticiniana based on molecular data. Gyromitra khanspurensis and G. pseudogigas, which also form a highly supported clade, are considered separate species early in the process of speciation that differ significantly in ascomata and ascospore morphology. A key to species based on morphology and geography is provided.

Following a late fall wildfire in 2016 in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, pyrophilous fungi in burn zones were documented over a 2-y period with respect to burn severity and phenology. Nuc rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 = ITS) barcodes were obtained to confirm morphological evaluations. Forty-one taxa of Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were identified from burn sites and categorized as fruiting only in response to fire or fruiting enhanced by fire. Twenty-two species of Pezizales (Ascomycota) were among the earliest to form ascomata in severe burn zones, only one of which had previously been documented in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Nineteen species of Basidiomycota, primarily Agaricales, were also documented. Among these, only five species (Coprinellus angulatus, Gymnopilus decipiens, Lyophyllum anthracophilum, Pholiota carbonicola, and Psathyrella pennata) were considered to be obligate pyrophilous taxa, but fruiting of two additional taxa (Hygrocybe conica and Mycena galericulata) was clearly enhanced by fire. Laccaria trichodermophora was an early colonizer of severe burn sites and persisted through the winter of 2017 and into spring and summer of 2018, often appearing in close association with Pinus pungens seedlings. Fruiting of pyrophilous fungi peaked 4-6 mo post fire then diminished, but some continued to fruit up to 2.5 y after the fire. In all, a total of 27 previously unrecorded taxa were added to the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) database (~0.9%). Most pyrophilous fungi identified in this study are either cosmopolitan or have a Northern Hemisphere distribution, but cryptic endemic lineages were detected in Anthracobia and Sphaerosporella. One new combination, Hygrocybe spadicea var. spadicea f. odora, is proposed.

Nomenclatural type definitions are one of the most important concepts in biological nomenclature. Being physical objects that can be re-studied by other researchers, types permanently link taxonomy (an artificial agreement to classify biological diversity) with nomenclature (an artificial agreement to name biological diversity). Two proposals to amend the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN), allowing DNA sequences alone (of any region and extent) to serve as types of taxon names for voucherless fungi (mainly putative taxa from environmental DNA sequences), have been submitted to be voted on at the 11th International Mycological Congress (Puerto Rico, July 2018). We consider various genetic processes affecting the distribution of alleles among taxa and find that alleles may not consistently and uniquely represent the species within which they are contained. Should the proposals be accepted, the meaning of nomenclatural types would change in a fundamental way from physical objects as sources of data to the data themselves. Such changes are conducive to irreproducible science, the potential typification on artefactual data, and massive creation of names with low information content, ultimately causing nomenclatural instability and unnecessary work for future researchers that would stall future explorations of fungal diversity. We conclude that the acceptance of DNA sequences alone as types of names of taxa, under the terms used in the current proposals, is unnecessary and would not solve the problem of naming putative taxa known only from DNA sequences in a scientifically defensible way. As an alternative, we highlight the use of formulas for naming putative taxa (candidate taxa) that do not require any modification of the ICN. A new fossil mushroom is described and illustrated from the Lower Cretaceous Crato Formation of northeast Brazil. Gondwanagaricites magnificus gen. et sp. nov. is remarkable for its exceptional preservation as a mineralized replacement in laminated limestone, as all other fossil mushrooms are known from amber inclusions. Gondwanagaricites represents the oldest fossil mushroom to date and the first fossil mushroom from Gondwana.

Two mycorrhizal taxa are described: Lactarius rubidus from the west coast and Leccinellum quercophilum from eastern North America. Lactarius rubidus is a new combination for Lactarius fragilis var. rubidus, here validated after a previous invalid publication. Leccinellum quercophilum is a new species. Detailed macro- and microscopic descriptions, ITS and LSU sequences, illustrations of microscopic features, and plates are presented for each species; a type study of Lactarius fragilis var. rubidus is also provided.

Gyromitra is a widespread genus of macroscopic apothecial ascomycetes whose taxa may be mycorrhizal, saprophytic or parasitic. Nuclear ribosomal 28S large subunit sequence data from 35 specimens from North America, along with sequences available in GenBank, were used in maximum-parsimony, maximum-likelihood and Bayesian analyses to reconstruct a phylogeny of Gyromitra in North America. Gyromitra sensu lato forms a monophyletic group within the Discinaceae composed of five distinct subgenera and 11 well supported clades that include Discina, Hydnotrya and Pseudorhizina. A new subgenus is proposed to accommodate G. californica and G. sphaerospora.

Recent molecular phylogenetic studies have revealed the existence of at least 50 species of Morchella worldwide and demonstrated a high degree of continental endemism within the genus. Here we describe 19 phylogenetic species of Morchella from North America, 14 of which are new (M. diminutiva, M. virginiana, M. esculentoides, M. prava, M. cryptica, M. frustrata, M. populiphila, M. sextelata, M. septimelata, M. capitata, M. importuna, M. snyderi, M. brunnea and M. septentrionalis). Existing species names (M. rufobrunnea, M. tomentosa, M. punctipes and M. angusticeps) are applied to four phylogenetic species, and formal description of one species (M. sp. "Mel-8") is deferred pending study of additional material. Methods for assessing morphological features in Morchella are delineated, and a key to the known phylogenetic species of Morchella in North America is provided. Type studies of M. crassistipa, M. hotsonii, M. angusticeps and M. punctipes are provided. Morchella crassistipa is designated nomen dubium.

The region of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 used as the animal barcode was excluded as a potential marker, because it is difficult to amplify in fungi, often includes large introns, and can be insufficiently variable. Three subunits from the nuclear ribosomal RNA cistron were compared together with regions of three representative proteincoding genes (largest subunit of RNA polymerase II, second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II, and minichromosome maintenance protein). Although the protein-coding gene regions often had a higher percent of correct identification compared with ribosomal markers, low PCR amplification and sequencing success eliminated them as candidates for a universal fungal barcode. Among the regions of the ribosomal cistron, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region has the highest probability of successful identification for the broadest range of fungi, with the most clearly defined barcode gap between inter- and intraspecific variation. The nuclear ribosomal large subunit, a popular phylogenetic marker in certain groups, had superior species resolution in some taxonomic groups, such as the early diverging lineages and the ascomycete yeasts, but was otherwise slightly inferior to the ITS. The nuclear ribosomal small subunit has poor species-level resolution in fungi. ITS will be formally proposed for adoption as the primary fungal barcode marker to the Consortium for the Barcode of Life, with the possibility that supplementary barcodes may be developed for particular narrowly circumscribed taxonomic groups.

Although spores from most macrofungi are wind- or water-dispersed, dispersal may also occur via biotic vectors. The Eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) is a facultative mycovore that may play an important role in fungal spore dispersal although, to date, no information exists on fungi occurring in fecal samples of box turtles or on the ecological significance of box turtles as spore dispersal vectors. Consequently, a study of the potential for Eastern box turtles to act as vectors for spore dispersal was initiated by capturing wild turtles and collecting fecal samples. Serial dilutions from fecal samples were made to enumerate spores, quantify the number of spores per gram of fecal material and to isolate and identify fungi. Fungal spores were found to be extremely abundant throughout all samples. Fecal samples from 36 turtles yielded a total of 23 different fungal taxa in the Zygomycota, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota. Two yeasts that were isolated, Cryptococcus albidus and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, are reported to naturally occur on Trifolium seeds found in fecal samples. A mold previously unreported from fecal material, Aspergillus wentii, was also found in fecal samples. Data collected suggests Eastern box turtles influence fungal spore dispersal by browsing on plant materials and defecating large numbers of fungal spores within their home ranges.

Previous studies based on morphology and on ability to intercross suggested that new bio- logical and morphological species were sheltered within the genus Flammulina as well as varieties with- in E velutipes. The currently described or proposed Northern Hemisphere Flammulina species are F "mexicana, "F. populicola, F rossica, F ononidis, E elas- tica, F. fennae and F velutipes. Within E velutipes are F velutipes var. velutipes, var. " lupinicola," and var. lac- tea. The ribosomal ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region was se- quenced for eighteen geographically diverse Flam- mulina collections, including the three F velutipesva- rieties. Results of neighbor-joining and parsimony analysis produced five distinct Northern Hemisphere clades, a clade consisting of F velutipes together with it's varieties, a clade consisting of F populicola and F. "mexicana", and clades representing F fennae, F. ros- sica and F elastica together with F. ononidis. Data are consistent with the hypothesis that F. populicola is a relatively old species which has diverged significantly on different continents, possibly giving rise to F "mexicana" in North America. The ITS sequence for Flammulina stratosa, an isolate from New Zealand, is highly divergent from all other Flammulina isolates and may represent an ancient endemic or the prod- uct of very rapid evolution. Recently published taxonomic circumscriptions for taxa withinFlammulina encouraged mating studies to confirm or reject these names or taxa. Three categories of pairing experiments were performed: 1) self-crosses of monokaryon isolates of examplars of various putative taxa; 2) inter-exemplar pairings among exemplar strains; and 3) pairings between examplars and 87 unidentified strains which were grouped on this basis. Mating experiments could distin-guishF. velutipes from other taxa, but not among infraspecific taxa ofF. velutipes (vars.velutipes, lactea, andlupinicola) and monokaryons of all these taxa were partially compatible with those ofF. ononidis. Likewise, isolates ofF. rossica andF. elastica were partially compatible with one another but incompatible with those of other taxa. All other taxa (F. mexicana, F. stratosa, F. populicola, F. fennae) appeared to be genetically isolated. Low levels of interspecific hybridization betweenF. velutipes andF. populicola, and betweenF. velutipes andF. rossica/elastica were also noted.

A new species, Flammulina stratosa Redhead, Petersen & Methven, sp.nov., is described from living Nothofagus from New Zealand. It is characterized by a thick, gelatinized mediopellis that virtually replaces all other pilear tramal tissues and is comparable with Flammulina similis. Cultures and mating systems are described.Key words: tetrapolar, conidia, southern hemisphere.

Mating systems in Xerula australis, Xerula furfuracea, Xerula incognita (sp.nov.), Xerula megalospora, Xerula rugosoceps, and the Xerula radicata complex are described, with notes on culture morphology and biogeographic distribution. All taxa tested were bifactorial (i.e., tetrapolar) and genetically isolated from one another. Multiple collections of X. furfuracea and X. megalospora were found to interbreed in vitro. Two collections of putative European X. radicata were found to be haploid, monokaryotic, nonmeiotic basidiomes genetically isolated from each other and from all other tested taxa, including X. radicata. Neohaploidization experiments with Xerula rufobrunnescens failed. A discussion comparing mating systems in Xerula to those in other genera of the Xerulaceae is included. Representative collections of Flammulina were examined by restriction digests of the ribosomal RNA internally transcribed spacer region (ITS1-5.8S- ITS2). Digestion with the restriction enzymes, HaeIII and Bst F51 distinguished among the major North- ern Hemisphere species of Flammulina. Digestion of E velutipes collections with two additional restriction enzymes, Bgl I and Bst UI, gave variable restriction fragment patterns and revealed biogeographically identifiable patterns. Three haplotypes of E velutipes were identified with geographical distributions chief- ly in Asia, Europe and North America. Recent trans- fer of haplotypes among geographical areas seems plausible based on the observed haplotype distribu- tion.

Leucochrysa pavida is a green lacewing which incorporates lichen fragments into its larval debris packets and pupal cocoons. Since only minute lichen fragments are harvested, identification of lichens utilized in debris packet and pupal cocoon construction is difficult using morphological characteristics. A comparison of the chemical profiles of epiphytic, corticolous lichens at Tower Rock Recreation Area in Hardin Country, Illinois, with lichen substances identified by thin-layer chromatographic analysis of debris packet and pupal cocoon extracts revealed that L. pavida larvae selectively harvest and use lichen thallus fragments from Lecanora strobilina, Lepraria sp. #1, and Myelochroa aurulenta in the construction of debris packets and pupal co

Fungi from the Carnegie Museum Herbarium (CM) were transferred to the New York Botanical Garden (NY) in 1981. Comprising approximately 41,000 specimens, this collection is most noteworthy for its extensive coverage of the mycota of western Pennsylvania. Biographical sketches are given of D. R. Sumstine, L. K. Henry, M. B. Knauz Overholts, and O. E. Jennings, the four main regional collectors. Two appendices are included: the first indexes the type specimens deposited in the fungus herbarium (excluding those types distributed in fungi exsiccati sets), and the second lists the sources of duplicate fungus specimens acquired by CM.

Three new species, Lactarius cocosiolens, L. manzanitae, and L. riparius, and the new variety, L. scrobiculatus var. montanus, are described from northern California. In addition, 14 species of Lactarius are reported for the first time from California, along with their habitats and distribution. Knowledge ofthe genus Lactarius in North America has resulted largely from the work of a small number of mycologists. Peck (1907) described L. rufulus and L. xanthogalactus from California collections made by Patterson and Nohara. Burlingham (1913), who published extensively on North American species of Lactarius (1908, 1910), spent several seasons collecting in Washington, Oregon, and California before publishing on the Lactariae ofthe Pacific coast. Coker (1918) published a major paper on the species of Lactarius found in North Carolina as did Kauffman (1918) for Michigan and Murrill (1938, 1942, 1943, 1948) for Florida. Hesler's and Smith's early studies (1960a, b, 1962) of Lactarius were the most comprehensive for the genus in North America prior to the publication of their monograph in 1979; the classification scheme presented by them has been followed throughout this study.
