Novel hydrazone 2-(2-((1 E ,2 E )-2-(2-phenylhydrazineylidene)propylidene)hydrazineyl)pyridine and its nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes have been synthesized and characterized. The ligand (H 2 PGl) was prepared by the condensation reaction of 1-(2-phenylhydrazineylidene)propan-2-one and 2-hydrazinopyridine. The crystal structure of Ni(II) complex was determined. In both Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes, H 2 PGl act as a neutral tridentate ligand forming two fused five-membered chelation rings through NNN set of donor atoms. Octahedral geometry is proposed for both chelates as illustrated in both magnetic and spectroscopic data. ESR spectroscopy was performed for Cu(II) complex which exhibited a considerable Cu–Cu interaction and harmonize directly with measured magnetic moment. The molecular modeling structures were optimized and showed the bond length, bond angle, reactivity, MEP and atomic charges for all the title frameworks. Hypothetical infrared intensities and 1 H NMR of H 2 PGl was estimated on the basis of DFT scheme. A comparison of the experimental and theoretical data was very useful in creating correct assignments and understanding the basic chemical shift. Biological activity of the synthesized compounds were investigated versus some Gram positive, Gram negative bacteria and some fungal strains. Also, the antitumor activity was investigated. Mononuclear cobalt(II), nickel(II), and copper(II) complexes of cetirizine·2HCl (CTZ = 2-[2-[4-[(4-chlorophenyl)phenyl methyl]piperazine-1-yl]-ethoxy]acetic acid) in the presence of alanine (Ala) as a representative example of amino acids were synthesized and elucidated by different physical techniques. All complexes have been characterized with the help of elemental analyses, molecular weights, molar conductance values, magnetic moments, and spectroscopic data. The measured molar conductance values in DMSO indicate that the complexes are nonelectrolytes. Quantum chemical calculations were performed with semi-empirical method to find the optimum geometry of complexes. The metal–oxygen bond length in the synthesized complexes obeys the order M–OH2 > M–OCTZ > M–OAla. Formation equilibria of the ternary complexes have been investigated. Ternary complexes are formed by a simultaneous mechanism. Stoichiometry and stability constants for the complexes formed are reported. The concentration distributions of various species formed in solution were also evaluated as a function of pH. CTZ and its metal chelates have been screened for their antimicrobial activities against some selected types of gram-positive (G+) and gram-negative (G−) bacteria. They were more active against (G+) than (G−) bacteria. The present article reports on the synthesis, characterization, and their electronic absorption spectra of M(II)–ternary complexes involving CTZ as antihistamine drug and alanine as a representative example of amino acids. The geometry of the studied M(II) complexes has been fully optimized using parameterized PM3 semi-empirical method. Protonation and complex formation equilibria were investigated. Abstract: In the present study, a new hydrazone ligand (2-((2-phthalazin-1-yl)hydrazono)methyl)phenol) prepared by condensation of hydralazine (1-Hydralazinophthalazine) with salicylaldehyde (SAH). The synthesized SAH-hydrazone and its metal complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, IR, 1H NMR, solid reflectance, magnetic moment, molar conductance, mass spectra, UV–vis and thermal analysis (TGA). The analytical data of the complexes show the formation of 1:1 [M:L] ratio, where M represents Ni(II), Co(II) and Cu(II) ions, while L represents the deprotonated hydrazone ligand. IR spectra show that SAH is coordinated to the metal ions in a tridentate manner through phthalazine-N, azomethine-N and phenolic-oxygen groups. The ligand and their metal chelates have been screened for their antimicrobial activities using the disc diffusion method against the selected bacteria and fungi. Proton-ligand association constants of (SAH) and the stepwise stability constants of its metal complexes are determined potentiometrically in 0.1M NaNO3 at different temperatures and the corresponding thermodynamic parameters were derived and discussed. Abstract: Schiff base ligand, 1,4-bis[(2-hydroxybenzaldehyde)propyl]piperazine (BHPP), and its Cu(II), Ni(II) and Co(II) metal complexes were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility, molar conductance and spectral (IR and UV–vis) studies. The ground state of BHPP ligand was investigated using the BUILDER module of MOE. Metal complexes are formed in the 1:1 (M:L) ratio as found from the elemental analysis and found to have the general formula [ML]·nH2O, where M=Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II), L=BHPP. In all the studied complexes, the (BHPP) ligand behaves as a hexadentate divalent anion with coordination involving the two azomethine nitrogen’s, the two nitrogen atoms of piperazine ring and the two deprotonated phenolic OH-groups. The magnetic and spectral data indicates octahedral geometry of metal(II) complexes. The ligand and their metal chelates have been screened for their antimicrobial activities using the disc diffusion method against the selected bacteria and fungi. They were found to be more active against Gram-positive than Gram-negative bacteria. Abstract: Schiff base namely 2-aminomethylthiophenyl-4-bromosalicylaldehyde (ATS)(4-bromo-2-(thiophen-2-yl-imino)methylphenol) and its metal complexes have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, 1H NMR, solid reflectance, magnetic moment, molar conductance, mass spectra, ESR and thermal analysis (TGA). IR spectra show that ATS is coordinated to the metal ions in a bidentate manner through azomethine-N and phenolic-oxygen groups. The ligand and their metal chelates have been screened for their antimicrobial activities using the disc diffusion method against the selected bacteria. A cytotoxicity of the compounds against colon (HCT116) and larynx (HEP2) cancer cells have been studied. Abstract: We report the synthesis of the hydrazone ligands, 1-(phenyl-hydrazono)-propan-2-one (PHP), 1-(p-tolyl-hydrazono)-propan-2-one (THP), 1-[(4-chloro-hydrazono)]-propan-2-one (CHP), and their Ni(II) and Cu(II) metal complexes. The structure of the ligands and their complexes were investigated using elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility, molar conductance and spectral (IR, UV, and EPR) measurements. IR spectra indicate that the free ligands exist in the hydrazo-ketone rather than azo-enol form in the solid state. Also, the hydrazo-NH exists as hydrogen bonded to the keto-oxygen either as intra or as intermolecular hydrogen bonding. In all the studied complexes, all ligands behave as a neutral bidentate ligands with coordination involving the hydrazone-nitrogen and the keto-oxygen atoms. The magnetic and spectral data indicate a square planar geometry for Cu2+ complexes and an octahedral geometry for Ni2+ complexes. The ligands and their metal chelates have been screened for their antimicrobial activities using the disc diffusion method against the selected bacteria and fungi. They were found to be more active against Gram-positive than Gram-negative bacteria. It may be concluded that the antimicrobial activity of the compounds is related to cell wall structure of bacteria. Protonation constant of (PHP) ligand and stability constants of its Cu2+ and Ni2+ complexes were determined by potentiometric titration method in aqueous solution at ionic strength of 0.1M sodium nitrate. It has been observed that the hydrazone ligand (PHP) titrated here has one protonation constant. The divalent metal ions Cu2+ and Ni2+ form with (PHP) 1:1 and 1:2 complexes. The insolubility of (THP) and (CHP) ligands in aqueous medium does not permit the determination of their protonation constants and formation constants of the corresponding complexes in aqueous solution. Abstract: The synthesis and structural characterization of mixed ligand complexes derived from 2-(2-pyridyl)-benzimidazole (PBI) (1ry ligand) and aliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acids (2ry ligand) are reported. Cu(II) complexes were characterized on the bases of their elemental analyses, IR, ESR and thermal analyses. The elemental analysis indicated the formation of mixed ligand complexes in a mole ratio 1:1:1 (Cu:L1:L2), L1 =PBI and L2 =oxalic acid, phthalic acid or malonic acid. IR spectra showed that PBI acts as a neutral bidentate coordinated to the Cu(II) via the pyridyl and imidazolyl nitrogen atoms. The dicarboxylic acids are bidentate with monodentate carboxylate groups. Thermal decomposition study of complexes was monitored by thermogravimetric (TG) and derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) analysis in N2 atmosphere. The decomposition course and steps were analysed and the activation parameters of the nonisothermal decomposition were calculated from the TG curves and discussed. The isolated metal chelates were screened for their antimicrobial activities and the results are reported, discussed and compared with some known antibiotics. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
