This comment on Sergio Romano's (2022) article tries to integrate this paper that presents correctly, however in a partial way, the relationship between some aspects of Alfred Adler's biography and his psychological hypotheses that contributed to the construction of the theoretical edifice of his Individual Psychology. Despite its conciseness, this comment integrates what is not fully described in Romano's paper, and it is also an opportunity to have a more complete view of Alfred Adler's theory. The commonplace argument that has often circulated regarding Individual Psychology is briefly discussed: it is often said that Alfred Adler's Individual Psychology is a simple theory, easily described with the use of few key concepts. It is argued, instead, that it is a theory that opens up numerous perspectives for understanding the complexity of mental functioning which, in this commentary, is briefly described. Assistive technologies (AT) perform an important social role, interacting with cultural systems to produce or hinder accessibility to biosocial environments. This interaction profoundly shapes not only how an individual body can be experienced by users but also produce and hinder accessibility to biosocial environments. AT users have historically been viewed through a medical model, which deems them disabled by their impairments and by dominant ableist narratives. Therefore, this paper serves to provide an insight into the importance of ageing with and into AT. This paper aims to investigate polio survivors' and diabetic amputees' experiences of assistive technologies in order to better understand impacts upon narrative and identity. By applying an anthropological and sociological lens, a holistic view of the experiences of polio survivor and amputee AT users is developed. This paper draws on 16 in-depth interviews with polio survivors and diabetic amputees in the United States (US) and Australia, which were analysed using an experience-centered narrative approach. Both projects were approved by ethics boards. All participants provided written consent. Five themes were identified: a) disruption to biographies, which reflected AT impact on how narratives become altered; b) impacts to autonomy, which reflected the importance of regaining previous daily activities; c) re-engaging with community life, which highlighted how AT supported participation in valued activities; d) self-perceptions of assistive technologies, which act in opposition to external perspectives and challenge ableist narratives; and e) an intergenerational comparison of new and older AT users highlights the importance of temporalities. This paper offers new perspectives on ageing with assistive technologies, with a focus on identity and narrative. The importance of this paper is to contribute to the existing literature that demonstrates the cultural implications that arise through embodiment and assistive technologies. The use of assistive technology can help individuals regain function, but the individual circumstances require consideration The use of assistive technology is a complex entanglement of bodies, environments, biographies, and imagined futures. The use of assistive technology can provide participants autonomy over their narratives and assist with maintaining their identities [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Jenny Davis was among the first small, but significant tranche of women field biologists in the Pacific Region. She was born in Tasmania and developed a fascination with freshwater systems at an early age. Despite the paucity of female role models, freshwater ecology evolved into her research career track at the University of Tasmania where she completed her Honours degree (Zoology; 1976) and PhD (Freshwater Ecology; 1981). Jenny started her first academic position as a Tutor at Murdoch University in 1985. She successfully moved through the academic hierarchy where women continue to be under-represented in the senior ranks. She recently (2021) retired from her administrative and teaching responsibilities at Charles Darwin University (CDU) and approaching 70, is currently a Professor of Freshwater Ecology at CDU. An over-arching theme of her research is to understand the factors influencing the persistence of groundwater and surface water ecosystems. She has worked on the impacts of multiple stressors on springs, wetlands and arid zone waterbodies. She serves as a compelling role model for young scientists struggling to have a satisfying work-life balance. Jenny single-parented a son while conducting field work, teaching, publishing, serving as an academic administrator and being a prolific and successful grant writer. Jenny was also an exceptional mentor to a diverse group of students and post-docs, many of whom have thriving careers in academia, government and industry across Australia. This paper is a biography of a woman who with talent and persistence successfully broke gender barriers in Australian freshwater ecology and academia. Jenny Davis was among the first small, but significant tranche of female field biologists in the Pacific Region. Jenny is one of the few women to be promoted to the academic rank of Professor in Australian sciences. Her current research involves answering two questions: (1) how much water does the environment need; and (2) how important are isolated aquatic waterbodies for the conservation of Australia's freshwater biota? This paper is a brief biography of Jenny. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Julie Savidge was among the first small but significant tranche of women field biologists. Her PhD research on the Pacific Island of Guam, published in 1987, stands as a textbook example of ecological problem solving and the first example of the devastating impact of an introduced reptile on an island fauna, the consequences of which continue today. Yet, her findings initially were strongly and publicly challenged. This paper is a brief biography of Julie, as one of the more successful of those pioneer women conservation biologists to work in the Pacific region. It tracks her early life, her influences and career path, and her struggles to balance work and family, particularly in the stressful world of academia. In this paper, we utilise data from biographical interviews to examine the values held by UK planners and whether and how they promote progressive planning ideals in their everyday work, often despite countertendencies in planning systems and organisational priorities. Our research concurs with the idea of a mildly progressive, yet conservative, positioning: in Hillier's (2002) terms, some planners are 'on a mission' but these missions vary from common-good orientations, a desire to do 'better' planning in a putative public interest, to more justice-based commitments to certain progressive 'causes' such as particular publics, cultural heritage, special places, or the environment. This paper examines the idea of sociological film that encourages sociological imagination, which refers to the capability to recognize the intersection of biography and history. The paper identifies six key dimensions of sociological film through a thematic analysis of different classic approaches to sociological imagination: sociological life, structure-actors relationship, critical perspective, academic awareness, fluidity of meaning, and promotion of sociological imagination. This paper provides concrete examples to demonstrate the distinctive features of sociological film and how it relates to, and differs from, other films that address social issues, including documentary films. The paper argues that sociological film is essential in fostering sociological imagination by offering a unique lens for analyzing and understanding social phenomena. Sociological film has the potential to inspire social change by increasing awareness about significant social issues and promoting critical thinking and reflection. The paper concludes by emphasizing the significance of collaboration between sociologists and filmmakers in advancing sociological imagination through the medium of sociological films. It highlights the importance of actively engaging with the public in visual research methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The French novels produced in the last 30 years show a great interest in issues of the subject, from forms of lyricism up to biographies, autobiographies and autofictions. In this context we have Tigre en papier [Paper Tiger], by Olivier Rolin (2002a), one of the greatest writers of his generation, twice nominated for the Goncourt prize, who after serving as a militant communist during his youth turns to writing, being the author of a consistent literary production. We intend thus to make an analysis of Tigre en papier, addressing it as a romanticized autobiography of Olivier Rolin's years of revolutionary political commitment, through which the author reflects on his political activism by the memory of Martin, the narrator of the adventures, who seems to be his alter-ego. In fact, Martins memories lead to an individual past that harks back to a larger French historical past and the communist revolutionary struggles in general, in contrast to the current reality of French post-industrial society. The importance of landscape has long been recognized within monastic studies, both as an economic and spiritual resource. This paper focuses on the surrounding landscape of a single monastic site, that is Kirkjubæjarklaustur on Síða (south Iceland), one of the two female monasteries established in Medieval Iceland. Through written sources, legends, and placenames, the aim of this paper is to reconstruct the biography of the landscape from before the founding of the monastery to after the Reformation. In particular, the paper considers how the perceived sacredness of the site of Kirkjubæjarklaustur may have been shaped by stories of Christian settlers prior to the monastic foundation and how the monastic memory informed the way in which the landscape was experienced after the Reformation and beyond. This paper introduces miraculous narratives in The Biographies of Eminent Nuns (BQNZ) and The Further Biographies of Eminent Nuns (XBQNZ) and provides a comparative examination based on the relevant narratives in the above-mentioned collections and The Biographies of Eminent Monks (GSZ). First, this paper suggests that eminent nuns' miracles in the BQNZ seem to be more limited than those of their male contemporaries in the GSZ, which might reflect their comparatively limited agency in social engagements. Furthermore, the BQNZ's silence on the eminence of foreign nuns, in sharp contrast to the special attention afforded to foreign monks in the GSZ, might suggest androcentrism in both the Saṅgha and Chinese society. Second, the entries containing "intentionally performed miracles" in the BQNZ outnumber those in the XBQNZ in terms of the percentage of all entries and diversity. Moreover, in later records of the XBQNZ, most miracles are only related to death. This might point to the lower esteem that eminent nuns enjoyed during and after late imperial China, partly because of Buddhism's development and social status. Alternatively, this might have resulted from special social circumstances. Finally, this paper suggests that the androcentric inclination of the male compilers of the BQNZ and XBQNZ, or the sources on which the two collections are based, might have undermined eminent nuns' prominence in upholding and spreading Buddhism. Such an androcentric bias is reflected in their selective use and adaptation of the materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

his paper aims to explore what might be the limits of what we call today Biographical Novel, framed as Biographical Fiction or Life Writing, research that has as its central objective to find an answer to questions such as: what might be the features of the genre and what purpose do they serve today? How do we relate to past personalities in the present context and what can we extract from their lives – can we talk about censorship/ attributing an unrealistic context to a public personality? But more importantly, what is the relationship between fact and fiction constructed, given that the boundary between these is very vulnerable? All these questions are meant to guide the readers throughout the study. Even if the genre is not so much in demand among writers today, probably for reasons related to the economy of time, such writing can become interesting to study how the author chooses to present someone’s life, a choice that must first be well documented, and then fully assumed, with full responsibility for the facts shown. The points on which the paper will focus are related to the novel of Moni Stănilă Brâncuși sau cum a învățat țestoasa să zboare, the biography Constantin Brancusi by Sanda Miller and the „On Constantin Brancusi” study written by Dore Ashton, where the construction of Constantin Brâncuși’s personality, as it appears in their works, will be contextualized in World Literature. In this paper we tell the story of Walt Disney, synthesizing the concepts of critical biography with those of life-span theory (LST) from sociology and psychology literature. In this manner, we can better understand how events in one's life can have a significant impact throughout that person's life. The paper focuses on four themes: (a) work ethic and pursuit of success, (b) perseverance -- bounce back from adversity and keep moving forward, (c) alliance with others who complement one's own strengths and offset one's weaknesses, and (d) commitment to excellence. Through these themes, we demonstrate how early life experiences influenced Walt Disney's behavior throughout his life. Table 1 is provided to outline the key events in the life of Walt Disney, cross-referencing the events as reported within the major Walt Disney biographies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AUTOBIOGRAPHY , *BIOGRAPHY (Literary form) , *FEMINISM - Abstract
Global publishing phenomenon Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls launched a wave of biography aimed at children. Styled as feminist bedtime stories and as a reinvention of the fairy tale, the trademark celebratory biographical arcs which focus on women's lives and stories as heroic have also attracted critique. This paper argues that Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls draws deliberate attention to both the limits and possibility of biography as a genre that has distinctive, ideological, and cultural power in conferring visibility and status to the subjects of representation. In interactive journal pages appended to each Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls volume, and in publications like I Am A Rebel Girl, the reader becomes a participant in the biographical project, invited to practise auto/biography and to create their own 'rebel' story. Rebel Girls work within the limits of but also models a potential for auto/biography as a feminist, activist tool, available to be taken up self-consciously by a generation of 'rebel' readers who may themselves become the rebel writers of their own or others' lives, inventing and evolving the possibility for biography as a feminist mode. The following is an excerpt from the volume Diego Maradona: A Socio-Cultural Study, edited by Pablo Brescia and Mariano Paz (London and New York: Routledge, 2023, 265 pp). This is the first book in English to explore the figure of Diego Maradona as an object of academic study, with the aim of introducing and theorising an emerging field that could be defined as 'Maradonian studies.' One of the most iconic football players of all time, Maradona is much more than a sporting legend. He has been read as an emancipatory political figure, a secular saint, a symbol of subalternity and, by others, an anti-hero (cheat, addict, opportunist). This paper includes extracts from the Introduction and Chapter 1 (co-written by Brescia and Paz), discussing the relevance of Maradona today, and his links to Argentinean politics and media. The volume contains individual chapters by different experts on a gamut of areas: Maradona as portrayed in the British press; Maradona and his links to Mexico, Spain, and Italy; the representation of Maradona in literature, cinema, music, and biography; Maradona approached from feminist perspectives; and the phenomenon of the Church of Maradona (among other topics). his paper takes a microhistorical approach to the examination of a marked clay pipestem found at an American Civil War Encampment in Williamsburg, VA. A biography of the object, from its manufacture at the Fiolet factory in Saint Omer, France to its use in Williamsburg VA, is used as an interpretive tool to investigate the meanings of this object to its consumer. By comparing this site to other sites in the English-speaking world where similarly marked objects have been recovered by archaeologists, the nature and causes of globalization in the second half of the 1800s are examined. This research demonstrates the value of bottom-up, artefact-focused research when examining important questions about large scale historical events and processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 1643, a manuscript was sent from Batavia to Amsterdam. It described in vivid detail a world virtually unknown to the West, that of South-Indian Hinduism, taken from the words of local Brahmins and drawn up by VOC minister Abraham Rogerius. It was not until 1651 that De Open-Deure tot het Verborgen Heydendom appeared from the presses of the Leiden printing house of François Hackius. By then, its author had died, and circumstances regarding the actual publication are shrouded in mystery. This is also true about the life of Abraham Rogerius and the identity of the Open-Deure's anonymous editor, A.W. JCtus. Traditionally associated with the Polish Socinian theologian Andreas Wissowatius, A.W's annotations added a wealth of scholarly detail to Rogerius plain narrative. In this paper, I greatly expand upon the existing biographies of Rogerius and draw lines between the various actors involved with the eventual publication of his writings. I provide a fresh insight into the editorial history and afterlife of the Open-Deure, showing that there are in fact two different editions that diverge at key points. Moreover, I demonstrate that the elusive A.W. JCtus is most certainly not Wissowatius, but instead the Leiden lawyer and politician Arnoldus Wittens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two hundred years of constant and deliberate disruption, dislocation and mistreatment of First Peoples has not just been experienced individually but collectively between generations and across communities. The legacy of discriminatory treatment continues for many First Peoples in archives where their stories are still locked in police files, exemption files, child welfare reports and in some instances privately owned records, meaning they are not always able to locate their story or own their identity. People whose family members were impacted by government policies (such as exemption) need to undertake extensive archival research in order to know their family history. This paper describes how the author combined auto‐ethnographic description of her personal experience of archival research with documentary evidence to create a personal and historical narrative. This narrative has been captured in a "her‐storical biography", a cultural artefact meant for family. This paper argues that the First Nations re‐authoring of colonial narratives described here might work as a model for people looking for family her‐stories of exemption in the written archive. This article discusses the politics of form in ʿAbdullāh al-ʿArwī's 1989 ʾAwrāq: sīrat Idrīs al-dhihniyyah (Papers: Idrīs's Intellectual Biography), an important contribution to Moroccan experimental literature in the postcolonial era. Together with Muḥammad Barrādah's 1987 novel Luʿbat al-nisyān (The Game of Forgetting , 1996), Awrāq consolidated the experimental turn in the Moroccan literary scene, aiding thereby its ascent to the mainstream. ʾAwrāq is a two-layered text, presenting the reader with, first, a stack of papers of various sorts belonging to the diseased protagonist Idrīs, and second, the commentaries on this archive by the narrator and Shuʿayb. The book constantly oscillates between these two layers, attempting in the process to shake the dominant realist form and its underlying European point of reference. ʾAwrāq 's search for its best form parallels Idrīs's quest to restore, or be reconciled to, his identity in the context of France and Europe's colonial project and its legacy. The text's experimentalism is thus strategically harnessed to wrestle, within the diegesis, with various political and sociocultural challenges facing Morocco, and the Arab/Arabo-Amazigh world more broadly, in the postcolonial era—including the colossal task of reconciling the Islamic heritage (al-turāth) with hegemonic Western discourses of modernity. This paper reports on data that is part of a wider evaluation of a small‐scale project that offers support to parents, children and families affected by alcohol and substance use. Using semi‐structured interviews and a focus group, the data in this paper explore mother's sense making of their substance use and their experiences of various professional interventions which have helped or hindered their personal journeys of recovery. Mothers' narratives suggested a self‐critical inner dialogue conceptualized as shame. Fear of stigma and a sense of shame derived from historical abuse and had a profound effect on how mothers perceived themselves and how they negotiated a web of professionals involved in their lives. Community projects with a focus on understanding mothers and their needs, and not the risk they posed to their children, were considered most supportive. Interventions working within a non‐judgemental and empathetic framework that fostered the importance of relationships and connection had a greater impact on mothers' long‐term recovery goals. This paper explores work-related multi-locality – living in several places for work-related reasons – using qualitative interviews including participatory visual methods. To give space to multi-locals as people with complex living and working arrangements and to support their narratives, the visual methods work-life biographies and reflexive photography were used during interviews. After introducing the state of research on work-related multi-local living and visual methods, two German case studies, the one in the city of Stuttgart in Baden-Wuerttemberg, the other in the rural district of Diepholz in Lower Saxony, are described. The aim of this paper is to ascertain the value of using visual methods to explore multi-local living arrangements. The research questions are: (1) Which (specific) elements do multi-local employees visualise when using work-life biographies and reflexive photography ? (2) Which new insights into multi-local living arrangements do the two methods provide? (3) What are the pros and cons of using such methods within qualitative interviews? The study shows that multi-locals used common thematic elements when using the visual methods: For example, especially words, numbers, specific signs and bars in the case of biographies and certain situation, people and objects in case of the photographs. Furthermore, both methods allowed new insights into multi-local living arrangements, such as their temporal and spatial dimensions, the interplay between living and working arrangements over time as well as the place attachment of multi-locals. Using visual methods during qualitative interviews provided clear added value in studying multi-locality, as it created a suitable interview introduction, reinforced spoken statements or facilitated the discussion of sensitive topics. Participatory visual methods can be used to explore a range of topics in qualitative studies looking at participants in complex situations. For multi-locality studies in particular, visual methods can be beneficial in stimulating and addressing a combination of spatial and temporal thinking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is possible to encounter the name of Emine Semiye in various studies conducted on the last periods of the Ottoman history, e.g., works on the Ottoman bureaucracy, Union and Progress Party, and Ottoman Democratic Party. The name of Emine Semiye, who contributed to education as a teacher in different periods, cities, and environments and participated in voluntary activities, particularly those on women's rights, is included in studies conducted in this regard. As she is the author of articles published in various newspapers and journals and literary works, Emine Semiye draws the interest of the literary world and the press. The letters written by Emine Semiye, who lived an extraordinary life considering the period in which she lived, have been significant documents to shed light on her biography and ideas. "Letters to Ms. Guzin", which is also the subject of this article, was published in Yarin (Tomorrow) journal. It is understood that these letters were not seen in independent works written on Emine Semiye. Her "Letters to Ms. Guzin" was published between October-December 1921. These letters are also important in that they were sent from Istanbul, which was occupied then, to Anatolia, where there was a national struggle for independence. In this paper, Emine Semiye's Letters have been examined under 7 headings, excluding "Introduction" and "Conclusion". These headings are: "The Journal Where the Letters Were Published, Yarin", "Emine Semiye's Letters and Articles Published in Yarin", "Ms. Guzin, the Addressee of the Letters", "The Contribution of the Letters to the Biography of Emine Semiye", "Letters to Ms. Guzin in Terms of Reflecting Emine Semiye's Intellectual World", and "Apostille". In this study, Emine Semiye's biography and intellectual world have not been rewritten. Rather, attention was drawn to the articles published in Yarin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By focusing on a controversial figure in Northern Song China (960–1127), namely Xing Shu 邢恕, this paper traces the historiographical construction of particular scholar-officials in Chinese historical accounts. Xing Shu, one of the best students of the Daoxue 道學 master Cheng Yi 程頤 (1033–1107), was depicted in most historical writings as a betrayer of his teacher and a political opportunist, including in his biography in the official Song dynastic history. This article demonstrates how the testimonies of Xing Shu's contemporaries offered rich materials for the construction of his treacherous character in later written records. Through a careful examination of these testimonies, the article reveals various historiographical operations through which contemporary testimonies were modified and transformed into seemingly reliable documents of historical figures and thus passed to later generations. This paper advances existing research on both the geographies of fashion and the geographies of waste, utilising their shared interests in commodity biography. Empirically, it documents the use of textile waste from export-oriented garment factories in the peri-urban areas of Phnom Penh, Cambodia as fuel for nearby brick-kilns supplying the city's booming construction sector. Interviews and documentary photography present the forms of living, labour and harm at both the brick-kilns and the garment dump from which the textile waste is sourced. Substantively, the paper argues for the consideration of preconsumer garment waste to complement the dominant preoccupation with postconsumer waste and reuse. Conceptually, the paper argues for geographical biographies of commodity culture that are attentive to things' material dynamics of becoming, unbecoming and transformation across spaces, sectors and material forms: that is, to their 'patch geographies'. Towards the end of the 19th century, the Tatar merchants from the Nijniy Novgorod province of Russia visited Finland temporarily for their commercial aims. However, some of them decided to settle down in Finland later on. The Finland Tatar Community today is the descendants of these merchants. Their current population is approximately six hundred. Tatars, who have lived for more than one hundred years in Finland, tried to sustain their language and culture with many important activities. The most important of these is the publication activities of some Tatar intellectuals in Finland. These intellectuals published many books, booklets, and journals on religious and national issues in order to preserve their culture. Hasan Hamidulla is the most important of these intellectuals. The biography of Hasan Hamidulla is given in the present paper. Besides, the list of his works from different genres is presented with some sample pages from the works. The aim of the paper is to attract the attention of the researchers to Hasan Hamidulla and his works. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper opens with a consideration of the biography of a large basin discovered during excavations at the Abbasid capital of Samarra. The large, circular, basin from Samarra closely matches historical descriptions of a fountain located in the city's Congregational Mosque which became known as "kasat firun," or the "Cup of Pharaoh" and, since its discovery, this excavated basin and the historical account of the fountain have often been conflated as one and the same. The excavated basin is carved from a non-local -- and probably Egyptian -- stone which may have generated its mysterious association with the Pharaonic past. A consideration of the possible sources from which such a large stone basin might have been obtained during the Islamic period, however, opens up a wider discussion related to the reuse of pre-Islamic artefacts as water features. This paper explores possible scenarios through which the basin from Samarra might have been acquired by the Abbasid caliphs alongside the logistics associated with its transport to Samarra. In addition, the likely motivations for the installation of this enigmatic stone basin are evalu-ated -- including pragmatic reuse of an impressive piece of stonework, a symbolic statement of contemporary pre-eminence over the rulers of the past or perhaps even beliefs in the quasi-magical powers of ancient objects. Alongside this, the existence of several comparable, near-contemporary, basins, demonstrate that the reuse of objects from the past as contemporary water features in important locations, was a wider practice seen in both the Islamic world and beyond. As an object that seems to have led multiple lives, the complex biography of the basin from Samarra illuminates the ways in which material remains of the past were understood and repurposed during the Abbasid Caliphate. BIOGRAPHY (Literary form) , *EXEMPLA - Abstract
Moving away from the nineteenth century's concern with Quellenforschung , serious study of Valerius Maximus' Facta et dicta memorabilia in the twentieth century produced a variety of different approaches to this Tiberian text of exemplary tales. One of the most interesting projects in this regard was produced by T.F. Carney, who scrutinised a key exemplar, Gaius Marius, across the work. In constructing a 'biography' from the exempla themselves, Carney's labour contributed much to Roman history generally, but also pioneered a novel methodology for reading Valerius Maximus—one that was taken up and imitated by later scholars. This methodology, however, is not without problems, particularly in relation to the way that Valerius has shaped, structured, and arranged his work at the level of chapter. By building upon Carney's methodology, but also considering the context of the individual chapters themselves, I provide in this paper a case study of the way in which Valerius writes the life of Marcus Tullius Cicero—a figure unique in the Facta et dicta memorabilia in being both exemplar and a major source for the work. In doing so, this article elucidates the process of 'exemplary biography'. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Following the theories about the author's posture, my paper aims both to reconstruct the path of Mariana Marin's mythologization and to deconstruct it by establishing two main postures: the tragic posture, congealed mainly post-mortem, and the ethical one, originating in a specific ethos, identifiable in the poet's biographical-artistic trajectory. Having become a mythologised figure of the 1980s generation, due to the fatalistic correspondences between poems and biography or to the legitimisation of her value by comparison with poets of the same framework, but from the mainstream of world literature (Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, Else Lasker-Schüler), Madi – the famous nickname – tends to penetrate abusively, sometimes unjustifiably, into the reception of Mariana Marin's texts, hence the empirical persona which becomes strongly than the poetic work. Karol Anton Medvecký, a Catholic priest, politician and folk educator with an interest in ethnography, was an important figure in Slovak modern history and was a participant in important turning points in Slovak society at the beginning of the 20th century. He began to engage in public life at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the introductory parts, the author deals with the methodological and theoretical basis for writing professional historical biographies. The second part describes the work of Slovak historians about this personality, his life and work. The author analyzes and evaluates the previous works of Slovak historiography on K. A. Medvecký, which were professional studies, articles and review papers in proceedings, dictionaries and lexicons. He states that a professional historical biography about K. A. Medvecký has not yet been written. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper offers a new interpretation of Ar. Nub. 554. The aim is to stress the dependence of the expression ἐκστρέψας ... κακὸς κακῶς on a principle of ancient literary criticism here called the "poetic identity principle", based on the overlap between the author's nature and the content of his work. This dependence has been neglected until now. Therefore, I shall prove the principle is present in the line by first analysing the structure of the sequence in which the line is found (518-559) and then comparing l. 554 to other of Aristophanes' loci. Moreover, I shall argue that Aristophanes usually recalls the principle to build negative and positive poetic paradigms: such a principle may also concern the author himself within his own work, which had not been noticed before. This paper develops from an orientation project conducted in secondary school. The principles on which the project was built, and the feedback and reflections gathered through an open questionnaire at the end of the project are presented. Folktales told by a professional storyteller are a starting point of an orientation project that accompanies students towards selfawareness and the search for a compass that allows them to open up to their desires and the construction of a personal life project. Orientation is not understood as the development of competence for work or as a tool for constructing one's educational or professional biography, but as a tool for being able to imagine possible futures for oneself and the community. In the 1830s, Karl F. A. Gützlaff (1803-51) wrote a large number of Chinese biographies. These biographies can be classified into three categories: the first were Biblical biographies, which were independently published in Chinese books. The second were the historical biographies of Western figures, which were mainly contained in his historical works. The third were the modern biographies, published in "Sing Poo" [biograpgy姓譜] column in Eastern Western Monthly Magazine. Despite their wide circulation at that time, these numerous biographies mentioned above have never been carefully researched. This paper focuses on the stylistic form of the biographies, traces the course of their development, analyzes their artistic characteristics, and explores their influence on the genre of Chinese modern biographies. The paper points out that biblical-based biographies of Christian figures and saints take narrative as an acceptable form. The historical biographies not only follow the Western tradition of integrating biography into history, but also absorb the stylistic features and artistic skills of ancient Chinese biographies. And the single biographies of political figures were separated from the historical biography, fully and vividly narrate the life of the characters and become a type of character-centered life writing that differs from previous historical biographies. Although relatively rough in art, the biographies written by Gützlaff played a pioneering role in introducing Western biographies into China, mixing the respective artistic skills and aesthetics of Chinese and Western biographies, thus gradually promoting the integration of Chinese and Western biographies and the modern transformation of Chinese biographies. On behalf of the German Neurological Society (DGN), a study was conducted into how far former chairmen, honorary chairmen, and honorary members could be regarded as incriminated from the National Socialist period. While an online supplement of this journal presents seven individual biographies (in six papers) by way of example, this paper offers an overview summarizing the project results and introducing the biographies. The first part and the methodological section discuss the difficulties of retrospectively identifying neurologists involved in the Nazi movement. Formal characteristics (eg, membership of the Nazi Party (NSDAP) or other Nazi organizations or participation in Nazi crimes) and content‐related clues (eg, statements reflecting Nazi ideology, personal contacts with Nazi officials or active support of the system) can be helpful. The second part summarizes the principal results of a study of 28 German and Austrian neuroscientists with regard to their involvement and their post‐war careers. Six of the seven "founding fathers" of the DGN were former NSDAP members; 10 of the 13 presidents in office until 1976 had belonged to Nazi organizations—the NSDAP, the SA ("Brownshirts") or the SS ("Blackshirts"). Moreover, seven out of 10 honorary presidents had formal or substantive links to National Socialism. Of the German and Austrian honorary members appointed up to 1985, two‐thirds had leanings to Nazi ideology or the National Socialist system. This paper concludes by outlining how the DGN and its members are currently addressing this historical legacy in order to establish a responsible culture of remembrance. As a meditation on a method of narrative inquiry, this paper describes an ongoing project which integrates a narrative, portrait-based approach to clinical storytelling with a clinically-focused dialogical process. Expanding upon previous narrative work completed by Michael O'Loughlin and colleagues, this research is a single-case, longitudinal, qualitative exploratory study of an individual who has struggled with psychosis, been exposed to the psychiatric care system, and transmuted their life history through artistic sublimation. In addition to producing a biographical portrait, the purpose of this study's expanded methodology is to invite a reflective, dialogical process that allows for autobiographical engagement, verification and co-construction of the emerging life story, and deepening conversations about the complexities of human struggle. It is my hope that, through a version of dialogical exchange and narrative practice in the tradition of Michael White, this research provides a way in which clinicians and researchers can facilitate curative, biographical spaces for those with painful lived experience and inherited trauma. By receiving, tracking, and validating human thought and experience, this work aims to combine the portraiture of rendering a life with an in-depth exploration of the complexities of and intersectionality between subjectivity, severe psychiatric distress, creativity, counter-storying, and narrative healing. Can the perpetrator or the collaborator "speak"? How, and for whom? Do they have a "right to a biography" and, if so, what are the terms of this right? Who can speak for them? In short, what does it mean to work through their lives and the crimes they committed for those who decide to tell their stories? The main goal of this paper is to answer these questions using a particular kind of documentary directed by those who, in a certain moment of their lives, have discovered that a member of their families was a perpetrator or a collaborator relating to a dictatorship. Using Lotman's theory of culture and memory, we discuss the positionalities of those who "wrote" these documentaries, located constantly between the individual and the collective semiosphere. Taking into account two case studies – El pacto de Adriana directed by Lissette Orozco (Chile, 2017) and L'occhio di vetro directed by Duccio Charini (Italy, 2020) – we look at the mechanisms of investigation and recollection that they use and "show," in order to elucidate family secrets within the broader contexts of the collective traumas of Chile's and Italy's post-conflict societies. This article examines Rebecca J. Scott and Jean M. Hébrard's Freedom Papers and Marie-Célie Agnant's novel Le livre d'Emma as two important contributions geared towards filling the lacunae that exist in the historical record given the lack of slave narratives in French. This study argues that these narratives are important because they approach slavery in the French empire from a fresh angle. Freedom Papers reconstructs the existence of a woman named Rosalie from her entry into the slave trade through her life in Haiti. Such a biographical approach allows researchers to put an individual face on what has mostly been studied as an abstract institution. Similarly, Agnant traces the family history of Emma back to her first ancestor to make the transatlantic journey. Although Agnant's contribution is fictional, Emma's story captures a perspective similar to the experience of many whose ancestors were enslaved. Both stories stress the importance of writing – veritable ink on paper. It was through writing that biased historical narrative was created by former empires. It is therefore through writing that Rosalie succeeded in injecting herself into the historical record, and through writing that Emma ensures her ancestors' story is never forgotten. The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the biographical, professional, and health-educational works of Dr. Isak Samakovlija, who was better known as a writer than a doctor in the country where he was born. He was born in 1889 in Goražde, the easternmost province in the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy, into a modest Jewish merchant family. He attended high school in Sarajevo and completed his studies in medicine in Vienna in 1917. During the First World War, he served twice in the Austro-Hungarian army. After the end of the First World War in 1918, he completed a medical internship at the National Hospital in Sarajevo. He began his service as a doctor, first in Goražde and then in Fojnica and Sarajevo. After the establishment of the Independent State of Croatia in May 1941, he was dismissed from his duties in the service without the right to pension or support, and without the right to appeal. In the Independent State of Croatia, he was twice mobilized into the Home Guard and was manager of the clinic in the Alipašin Most refugee camp. After World War II, he was the head of the Health Education Department of the Ministry of Public Health of the People's Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo. Together with a group of enthusiastic doctors, he founded and edited the first Bosnian medical journal Život i Zdravlje (Life and Health). In that journal, Dr. Samokovlija published 29 articles of health and educational content. In 1949, Dr. Samokovlija left the Ministry of Public Health and continued to edit the literature and art journal Brazda, but he still had a private practice until the end of his life. He died in Sarajevo on January 15, 1955. He was buried with the highest state honors at the Jewish cemetery in Sarajevo. Conclusion. Isak Samakovlija (1889-1955) was one of the first medical doctors born in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He made a significant contribution to the improvement of people's health after the First and Second World Wars in the places where he worked. His special contribution are his articles on health education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
