Fragmentation threatens biodiversity and forest-dwelling animals can be especially vulnerable. Neotropical primates inhabit forests and play ecological roles in maintaining forest biodiversity. Currently, many primate communities are restricted to forest fragments. We (1) evaluated the influence of environmental, matrix, and site attributes on species richness and functional traits of primates in the Neotropics, and (2) evaluated the effect of the sub-region on the relationships between primates and environmental, matrix, and site attributes. We conducted literature searches to find published data on primate communities in forest fragments throughout the Neotropics. Each fragment was assigned to 1 of 11 sub-regions: Mesoamerica, Tumbes-Choc&oacute, Magdalena, Caribbean, Orinoco, Amazon, Atlantic Forest, Cerrado, Chaco, Andes, Caatinga, and Pampa. Based on actual and expected species occurrences, we calculated the proportion of primate species retained in the fragments, the mass retained, and dietary items retained considering reproductive and vegetative plant parts and prey. We used linear mixed models to correlate primate variables with environmental, matrix, and site attributes. Fragment area was more important for primate retention than environmental, matrix, and site attributes, with primate retention being higher in larger fragments. Fragment size was positively correlated with all primate variables, except for retention of prey consumption, whose retention decreased as water bodies and density of buildings in the matrix increased. Fragments within protected areas retained larger species than unprotected fragments. The proportion of extant mass retained and vegetative plant parts in the diet were highest in Mesoamerica and lowest in the Atlantic Forest. Conservation planning of Neotropical primates should consider both the differences among sub-regions, forest restoration to increase fragment size, and the creation of new protected areas, even in fragmented landscapes.

“ Païolive” is a karstic plateau covering approximately 15,000ha in the Mediterranean southern France. Canyons, an old oak forest established in a mega-lapies, grassy patches and scrubs in open areas named “ Gras”, and the endokarst, together constitute an ecological unit that contributes to the touristic attractiveness of the region. A multidisciplinary study attempted to relate the ecological organization and biodiversity of this ecocomplex to its geological and paleoecological history, and to the human activities that took place in the area since the end of the last glacial period. During the Neolithic, human populations inhabited the plateau, and agro-pastoral activities probably contributed to the persistence of postglacial grasslands, while Mediterranean oak forests were spreading from southern refugia. From the Roman period to the Middle Ages, human presence receded. During the 18th century, the “ Gras” were planted over with vineyards, and during the 19th century partly cleared of millions of tons of stones, which were stacked in low walls enclosing cultivated plots. Consequently, the oak forest was reduced. However, while two plant species provide evidence of the uninterrupted existence of some grassland patches, various species of lichens, mosses and insects are indicators of forest continuity. An ongoing All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (Atbi) shows that the ecological diversity of the ecocomplex results in high species richness. More than 4,500 species have been identified at present. Païolive is probably amongst the richest sites in France and maybe in Europe for bryophytes, and it is one of the richest in southern France for lichens, chiroptera, and for the saproxylic coleoptera indicators of the natural character of French Mediterranean forests. Païolive also appears as a remarkable biogeographical crossroads. Many species are endemic to the Mediterranean biodiversity hotspot, or to a limited region of southern France, but local endemics, mainly endokarstic species, are few. More than 450 species are protected either at the international level or at the national level, or else are placed on red lists. Many other spe- cies have an obvious heritage value, in particular because they are clearly endangered at the regional or local level. Thus, within the Mediterranean biodiversity hotspot, Païolive represents a biodiversity peak of high value. Moreover, it has an important cultural value due to its prehistoric sites, and to the extensive network of drystone walls that can be considered a fossil vernacular landscape. Païolive is facing important challenges brought by the decline of agriculture and the development of tourism. Conservation issues are discussed, with a focus on the decline of open areas, where a large number of species are endangered. The expansion of oak woods may condemn diverse open habitats, but is at the same time vital for the long-term conservation of the many species that depend on natural forests. Thus, the future of the Païolive ecocomplex needs well-pondered decisions., Païolive est un plateau karstique d’environ 15 000 ha situé dans le sud du département de l’Ardèche et le nord du département du Gard. Des canyons, une chênaie ancienne imbriquée dans un méga-lapiaz, des pelouses et des garrigues sur des étendues appelées «les Gras » , et l’endokarst forment une unité écologique qui contribue à l’attrait touristique de la région. Une recherche interdisciplinaire s’est donné pour but de comprendre l’organisation écologique et la biodiversité de cet écocomplexe en fonction de son histoire géologique, paléoclimatique et humaine. Au Néolithique, des populations ont habité le plateau et les activités agro-pastorales ont probablement contribué au maintien des milieux ouverts, tandis que les chênaies méditerranéennes s’étendaient depuis des refuges méridionaux. Pendant la période romaine et le Moyen Âge, l’occupation humaine s’est considérablement réduite. Au xviiie siècle, des vignes ont été plantées sur de larges parties des Gras. Au xixe siècle, des millions de tonnes de pierres ont été arrachées et stockées dans des murs pour dégager des parcelles cultivables. La chênaie a été réduite en conséquence. Cependant, tandis que deux plantes vasculaires témoignent de l’existence ininterrompue de quelques pelouses, diverses espèces de lichens, de bryophytes et d’insectes attestent d’une longue continuité forestière. Un inventaire taxonomique général (Atbi) montre que la diversité écologique de l’écocomplexe se traduit par une richesse spécifique élevée. Plus de 4 500 espèces ont déjà été identifiées. Païolive est probablement l’un des sites de France, voire d’Europe, les plus riches en bryophytes, et l’un des plus riches de la France méridionale pour les lichens, les chiroptères et les coléoptères saproxyliques bioindicateurs de la qualité des forêts méditerranéennes françaises. Païolive se révèle aussi être un carrefour biogéographique remarquable. De nombreuses espèces sont endémiques du hotspot méditerranéen ou d’une région limitée de la France méridionale, mais les endémiques locales, surtout des espèces endokarstiques, sont peu nombreuses. Plus de 450 espèces sont protégées soit au niveau international, soit au niveau national, ou sinon sont inscrites sur des listes rouges. Beaucoup d’autres espèces ont une valeur patrimoniale évidente, notamment parce qu’elles sont en danger au moins localement. Ainsi, Païolive constitue au sein du hotspot méditerranéen un pic de biodiversité ayant une forte valeur patrimoniale. En outre, le site a une importante valeur culturelle, en raison de ses sites préhistoriques, et en raison aussi de son vaste réseau de murets de pierres sèches qui forme, en tant que paysage vernaculaire, un élément remarquable du patrimoine culturel régional. Païolive est confronté à d’importants défis, liés au déclin de l’agriculture et au développement du tourisme. Le problème de la conservation de son patrimoine est discuté, en mettant l’accent sur la régression des milieux ouverts, où subsistent de nombreuses espèces menacées. L’expansion de la chênaie pourrait condamner certains de ces milieux, mais en même temps elle est essentielle à la conservation à long terme des nombreuses espèces inféodées à la forêt naturelle.
