Oman, a country in Southwest Asia, situated on the southeastern quarter of the Arabian Peninsula presents a high level of biological diversity especially marine elements. Although arid habitats cover most parts of Oman (82%), the region has several freshwater systems that are vital for the survival of people as well as for different groups of animals and plants. Research works on Oman biodiversity including terrestrial and marine, have been steadily increasing over the last few decades, but freshwater ecosystems have not been well investigated. Oman comprises parts of three freshwater ecoregions including the Oman Mountains, Southwestern Arabian Coast, and Arabian Interior having xeric freshwaters and endorheic (closed) basins which support a variety of inland fishes. The current checklist provides for each species of inland waters of Oman all recognized and named taxa, documenting recent changes and controversies in nomenclature, its records, taxonomic status, synonyms, etymology, common English name, short description, range expansion, and detailed distribution map based on several field surveys throughout the country. We also provide native, endemic, and introduced species. The diversity of inland fishes of Oman included in this annotated checklist consists of 23 recognized species in 15 genera, 10 families, seven orders, and a class. Also, for the first time, we report and confirm the presence of four species in the inland waters of Oman. The most diverse order is Cypriniformes (nine species, 39.13%), followed by Gobiiformes (six species, 26.09%), Cyprinodontiformes (three species, 13.04%), Cichliformes (two species, 8.69%), and Centrarchiformes, Gonorynchiformes and Mugiliformes (one species, 4.35% each). 21 native species (91.3%) in nine families and two exotic species (8.7%) in two families are listed here. Out of 21 native species, eight species (16.8%) in two families are endemic elements that are restricted to the Oman territory only. Identification of all recognized species was confirmed by DNA barcoding (mitochondrial COI). Oman Mountains Ecoregion (OME), Southwestern Arabian Coast Ecoregion (SACE), and Arabian Interior Ecoregion (AIE) harbor 15, 12, and one species, respectively. The provided data will be necessary for increasing the fish knowledge, the development of competent and pragmatic management plans and effective conservation policies.

Eleotris acanthopomus Bleeker, 1853, Native Fig. 30 Etymology: Eleotris: the name of a Nile fish, eleotris; acanthopomus: refers to the downward-pointing spine at the posterior margin of the preoperculum. Common name: Spine-cheek Gudgeon. Taxonomy: Eleotris acanthopomus was described by Bleeker [P.] 1853:275 [Natuurkundig Tijdschrift voor Nederlandsch Indië v. 4 (no. 2)] from Western Sumatra, Indonesia. Holotype (unique): RMNH 25934. Short description: D VI –I, 8; A I, 8; Pt 16; P2 I, 5; LR 51; TR 16; Pred. S 41; P-V 3/1 II II 1/8; V 10+15=25. The species of this genus have a downward-pointing spine at the posterior margin of the preoperculum, which is covered with skin. The species are distinguished by the differences in the sensory papillae. Eleotris acanthopomus has 5 transverse rows of papillae below the eyes. The 2nd and 4th transverse rows extend downwards beyond the longitudinal row below them, but the 3rd and 5th do not. Two longitudinal rows on the operculum do not touch at the posterior ends. Inhabits mainly brackish water. Takes up life at the bottom before it reaches 2 cm SL. General distribution: Indo-West Pacific: Comoros, Seychelles; Indonesia east to Micronesia and French Polynesia, north to Ibaraki Prefecture (Japan), south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. The interaction between environmental factors and the distribution of gobiid fishes was investigated at 16 sampling sites in estuarine areas of the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. Fish specimens were mainly collected by using trawl net, push net, and bag net every two months, from August 2017 to August 2019. Data analysis showed that 40 fish species belong to three families in the gobiid assemblage in the studied area. The most common family was Gobiidae (62%), followed by Oxudercidae (25%) and Eleotridae (13%). The number of fish species decreased gradually from estuary to midstream of river systems. The gobiid assemblage was more diversified in the river system controlled by the West Sea (37 species and 696 individuals) than in the river planned by the East Sea (17 species and 225 individuals). The fish species and biodiversity indexes decreased with the reduction of salinity from the estuary to the midstream of the river system. In the wet season, the fish assemblage was more abundant and diverse than in the dry season due to the environmental factors influenced by the Mekong River. The highest biodiversity index was recorded in Bay Hap and Ong Trang (77.38%). Moreover, the analyzed result of biodiversity indexes revealed that the diversity of fish species in the study area was relatively high. The study outcome will be useful in fisheries management and biodiversity conservation, especially for estuaries.

The knowledge of the Costa Rican freshwater fish fauna continues to grow given the discovery of new taxa, the recognition of taxa resurrected from synonymy and the corroboration of new country records and new range extensions. Moreover, recent advances in the understanding of the phylogenetic relationships and status of many supraspecific groups have led to numerous taxonomic and nomenclatural changes. Given this, the purpose of this paper is to update the known composition, distribution and clasification of the Costa Rican freshwater fish fauna taking as reference the most recent list for the country published by Angulo et al. (2013). A total of 23 new country records (i.e., species; distributed in 17 families and 21 genera), 33 new range extensions (distributed in 20 families and 30 genera) and several nomenclatural changes are reported, illustrated and discussed here. An updated and annotated checklist of the freshwater fishes of the country (including data for a total of 283 species, 13 of which are exotic, distributed in two classes, 27 orders, 55 families and 136 genera) is also provided.

International audience; All native fishes living in the Caribbean island rivers are considered diadromous but few species have been validated as diadromous. In Guadeloupe (Lesser Antilles) as well as in the other tropical islands, the riverine habitats are subject to strong anthropogenic pressure due to resource modifications or dams. The management of fish biodiversity requires knowledge concerning their life history traits and behaviour that are still unknown for most species at a local scale and at the whole distribution area of the species. In a Guadeloupe river, we inferred the migratory patterns of four freshwater fishes common to Caribbean rivers by the analysis of otolith microchemistry. We found two species Eleotris perniger (Eleotridae) and Sicydium plumieri (Gobiidae) to be completely amphidromous with a marine larval phase and a freshwater adult phase. Agonostomus monticola (Mugilidae) was also found to be amphidromous in this system. The fourth species Gobiesox cephalus (Gobiesocidae) showed elemental ratios suggesting an estuarine larval phase and was defined as “limited amphidromous”. The identification of such life history traits, with limited dispersion abilities, argues for specific management measures in tropical island rivers at a basin scale for the conservation of biodiversity.

This study investigates the published literature and incorporates our field data from 1997 to September 2018 to generate an inventory report of primary freshwater fishes for Perak State in Malaysia. We critically examined and enumerated 186 species from 2 classes, 16 orders, 43 families and 114 genera in 57 localities. A total of 173 fish species (91.4%) are native to Perak and 17 species (8.6%) are non-native. The provisional checklist presented herein is conservative and excludes doubtful inventory records that lack synthesis and traceability. We encountered seven taxonomic discrepancies and we also could not confidently identify eight species. These are explicitly discussed to inform future workers.

Sulawesi is an island famous for its biodiversity, including many endemic species. In particular, Sulawesi has the highest number of gobies in the world, including species with potential as food and/or ornamental fishes. The exploration of freshwater ichthyofauna is important in the context of Indonesian and global biodiversity. This research aimed to identify gobies found in the Luwuk Banggai area of Central Sulawesi, as a contribution to the exploration of Indonesian ichthyofaunal biodiversity. Gobies were sampled from January to March 2019 in the Biak and Koyoan Rivers. The sampled fish were measured and identified based on morphological characteristics. A total of 52 specimens were collected, and identified as belonging to 17 species within two families, the Gobiidae and Eleotridae. Gobies from the Koyoan River comprised 32 specimens from 8 species, while 20 specimens belonging to species were found in the Biak River. Only two species were found in both rivers: Stiphodon semoni and Sicyopterus lagocephalus. These results augment the body of knowledge regarding the presence and distribution of gobies in Indonesia

The Australian Monsoonal Tropics (AMT) is a unique location for the study of phylogeography and intraspecific genetic variation in freshwater fish. We assessed the phylogeographic structure of 5 species from 2 genera across the region. The species included 3 neosilurids (Plotosidae, Neosilurus hyrtlii, Neosilurus ater, and Neosilurus pseudospinosus) and 2 members of the genus Oxyeleotris (Eleotridae, O. selheimi and O. lineolata). We used mitochondrial deoxyribonucleic acid (mtDNA) and phylogenetic analyses to explore the phylogeographic histories of these species. Overall, phylogeographic patterns were inconsistent. Some species were highly structured, and phylogeographic breaks were detected (e.g., N. hyrtlii, N. pseudospinosus, and O. selheimi), but other species showed no obvious divergences across the AMT (N. ater and O. lineolata). Caecieleotris morrisi, new genus and species of sleeper (family Eleotridae), is described from a submerged freshwater cave in a karst region of the northern portion of the State of Oaxaca, Mexico, Rio Papaloapan drainage, Gulf of Mexico basin. The new species represents the first cave-adapted sleeper known from the Western Hemisphere and is one of only 13 stygobitic gobiiforms known worldwide, with all others limited in distribution to the Indo-Pacific region. The new taxon represents a third independent evolution of a hypogean lifestyle in sleepers, the others being two species of Oxyeleotris (O. caeca and O. colasi) from New Guinea and a single species, Bostrychus microphthalmus, from Sulawesi.
