The aim of this study is to update the list of fish species in order to increase the knowledge about biodiversity of commercially important fishes of Puducherry coastal waters. This study also concentrated on the availability and threatened status of commercially important fish species. A total of 88 fish species under 36 families and 11 orders has been collected during the study. Order Perciformes were made up to 65% with 23 families and 58 species followed by Clupeidae 15% with 3 families and 13 species. Clupeiformes stand on top in the catch followed by perches and mackerel’s. The study revealed that there were noteworthy variations found in the ichthyofaunal diversity. Among the 36 families, only 27 families were seen in the caught without any depletion. Order Beloniformes and Gadiformes showed sudden appearance in the catch which were not seen for the past 7 years. IUCN status of 88species were studied, about 63% of species were under least concern and 8% near threatened, 3% vulnerable category, 7% data deficient, 19% not evaluated. Anthropogenic activities affect aquatic habitats leading to loss of many species as well as bring changes in the species composition. Therefore, ichthyofaunal diversity studies on regular basis are essential for sustainable management.

Otoliths trapezoid, thin, with large rostrum. Sulcus wide and shallow. Ostium opens widely. Cauda straight and wide. Etymology This species is dedicated to Bruce Welton, who provided us a lot of otoliths, and as an appreciation of his extensive work on the fossil shark teeth from the Gulf Coast area. Dimensions of the holotype Length = 1.13 mm; height = 0.94 mm; thickness = 0.32 mm. Description This species is characterized by rectangular to trapezoid otoliths. The dorsal rim is more or less straight. The posterior rim is gently curved, forming rounded junctions with the dorsal and ventral rims. The ventral rim varies, which partly resulted from its preservation status; it is slightly irregular in the holotype (Fig. 13E), but largely undulated in the figured paratype. The anterior portion is characterized by a large, robust, and extended rostrum with a small but notable excisura. The otoliths are nearly flat on both faces. The sulcus is not deep but very wide and clearly divided into ostium and cauda. No collicula are visible. The ostial crista inferior curves somewhat upwards anteriorly and the ostium opens widely antero-dorsally. The cauda is straight and wide. At its posterior end, the cristae are indistinct. The dorsal area is somewhat hollowed out. Remarks Neoopisthopterus weltoni sp. nov. is a rare species; only three specimens are currently known: two from the Cook Mountain Formation and one from the “Stone City beds”, both in Texas. The above diagnosis allows us to assign this new species to the Recent genus Neoopisthopterus (see Nolf & Aguilera 1998: pl. 2 fig. 11 for an illustration of an otolith of the Recent N. tropicus). Clupeidae indet. Fig. 13H Remarks Clupeid otoliths are rare in the collection in terms of their numeric abundance in the associations, but they were found across different regions and ages. The mentioned specimen is an example of such a small otolith, well recognizable as a clupeid, but it does not allow a more precise assignment. The fossil otoliths of the southern USA have been known for more than 130 years and are among the richest assemblages worldwide. However, previous studies are often scattered and with outdated systematic scheme. A collection of over 25000 otoliths ranging in age from the Lutetian to the Priabonian from 47 sites in five states in the eastern and southern USA is analysed here. Combined with the earlier described material, at least 101 otolith-based taxa are documented, of which 83 are identified at species level. Fourteen of these are introduced as new species: Elopothrissus bernardlemorti sp. nov., “Muraenesox” barrytownensis sp. nov., Pseudophichthys texanus sp. nov., Paraconger wechesensis sp. nov., Neoopisthopterus weltoni sp. nov., “aff. Glyptophidium” stringeri sp. nov., Symmetrosulcus dockeryi sp. nov., Mene garviei sp. nov., “Citharus” varians sp. nov., Waitakia beelzebub sp. nov., Astroscopus compactus sp. nov., Parascombrops yanceyi sp. nov., Anisotremus rambo sp. nov., and Pagellus pamunkeyensis sp. nov. The assemblages are distinct fom contemporary European faunas by the complete lack of mesopelagic fish otoliths, and by the presence of sciaenids. Dominant taxa in the American Eocene are the Ophidiidae, Sciaenidae, Lactariidae, and Congridae. They indicate shallow-water environments for all the sampled sites. The notable abundance of those taxa suggests that they could have a higher turnover rate, and provided fundamental nutrition in the local Paleogene marine ecosystem. Further analyses of the species in the stratigraphic succession revealed that a faunal turnover between the Claiborne and Jackson seas was evident in teleosts, and it might be more widespread in other marine organisms in the region.

The knowledge of the Costa Rican freshwater fish fauna continues to grow given the discovery of new taxa, the recognition of taxa resurrected from synonymy and the corroboration of new country records and new range extensions. Moreover, recent advances in the understanding of the phylogenetic relationships and status of many supraspecific groups have led to numerous taxonomic and nomenclatural changes. Given this, the purpose of this paper is to update the known composition, distribution and clasification of the Costa Rican freshwater fish fauna taking as reference the most recent list for the country published by Angulo et al. (2013). A total of 23 new country records (i.e., species; distributed in 17 families and 21 genera), 33 new range extensions (distributed in 20 families and 30 genera) and several nomenclatural changes are reported, illustrated and discussed here. An updated and annotated checklist of the freshwater fishes of the country (including data for a total of 283 species, 13 of which are exotic, distributed in two classes, 27 orders, 55 families and 136 genera) is also provided.

Korea and Japan to Arctic Ocean off Alaska to northern Baja California; Arctic Canada as far east as Queen Maud Gulf (Coad in Coad and Reist 2018). Scattered populations in Norwegian Barents Sea and Russian White and Pechora Seas (Whitehead 1985, J��rstad et al. 1994, J��rstad 2004, Laakkonen et al. 2015). This species hybridizes with Clupea harengus Linnaeus, 1758 in northern Europe (Laakkonen et al. 2015). Marine, brackish waters and, very occasionally, fresh waters (Moyle 2002); depth: surface to 250 m (820 ft) (Whitehead 1985). There are a number of deeper capture records (e.g., 723 m, 2,371 ft, Bradburn et al. 2011; 1,033 m, 3,388 ft, 1,068 m, 3,503 ft, NWFSC-FRAM) all recorded from bottom trawl catches. In these circumstances it is not possible to ascertain if these fish were caught on the bottom or in midwaters during net deployment or recovery. The new anchovy Stolephorus grandis n. sp., described on the basis of 10 specimens collected from Papua, Indonesia, and Australia, closely resembles Stolephorus mercurius Hata, Lavoué & Motomura, 2021, Stolephorus multibranchus Wongratana, 1987, and Stolephorus rex Jordan & Seale, 1926, all having double pigmented lines on the dorsum from the occiput to the dorsal-fin origin, a long maxilla (posterior tip just reaching or slightly beyond the posterior margin of preopercle), and lacking a predorsal scute. However, the new species clearly differs from the others in having fewer gill rakers (35–39 total gill rakers on the first gill arch in S. grandis vs. > 38 in the other species), a greater number of vertebrae (total vertebrae 42–43 vs. fewer than 41), longer caudal peduncle (21.9–23.7% SL vs. < 20.8%), and the depressed pelvic fin not reaching posteriorly to vertical through the dorsal fin-origin (vs. reaching beyond level of dorsal-fin origin).

Gill membrane without serrations. Interorbital space flat, width less than eye diameter. Pseudobranchial filaments present, length of longest filament shorter than eye diameter. Gill rakers long, slender, rough, visible from side of head when mouth opened. Single row of asperities on anterior surface of gill rakers. Isthmus muscle long, reaching anteriorly to posterior margin of gill membranes. Urohyal hidden by isthmus muscle (not visible without dissection). Dorsal, ventral, and posterior margins of pectoral fin nearly linear. Pelvic fin shorter than pectoral fin, insertion anterior to vertical through dorsal-fin origin. Posterior tip of depressed pelvic fin not reaching to vertical through dorsal-fin origin. Caudal fin forked, posterior tips pointed. Scattered melanophores on snout tip, absent on suborbital area. Paired dark patches on parietal and occipital regions. Double dark lines on dorsum from occipital area to dorsal-fin origin. Scale pockets on dorsum with black posterior margin. All fins whitish, semi-transparent. Melanophores distributed along fin rays of dorsal and caudal fins. Caudal fin with black posterior margin. Distribution. Currently known only from the southern coast off Merauke, Papua, Indonesia to the northern coast of Australia (from Van Diemen Gulf, Northern Territory to Cairns, Queensland) (Fig. 2). Etymology. The specific name ���grandis��� refers to the larger body of the species, compared with similar species. Remarks. The new species is assignable to the genus Stolephorus, as defined by Whitehead et al. (1988) and Wongratana et al. (1999), in having a long isthmus muscle reaching anteriorly to the posterior margin of the gill membrane, the urohyal covered by the isthmus muscle, and prepelvic scutes, in addition to the absence of postpelvic scutes. Stolephorus grandis is easily distinguishable from all congeners, except for Stolephorus mercurius Hata, Lavou�� & Motomura, 2021, Stolephorus multibranchus Wongratana, 1987, and Stolephorus rex Jordan & Seale, 1926, in having double pigmented lines on the dorsum from the occipital area to the dorsal-fin origin, a long maxilla (posterior tip just reaching or slightly beyond the preopercle posterior margin), and lacking a predorsal scute (Whitehead et al., 1988; Wongratana et al., 1999; Kimura et al., 2009; Hata & Motomura, 2018a ���d, 2021; Hata et al., 2019, 2020a, b, 2021; Gangan et al., 2020). Moreover, the new species differs from the latter three species in having fewer gill rakers [total gill rakers on first, second, third, and fourth gill arch 35���39, 28���32, 18���21, and 16���18, respectively in S. grandis vs. more than 38, 31, 20, and 15 (more than 18 in S. mercurius and S. multibranchus), respectively in the other three; Table 1; Fig. 3], more total vertebrae (42 or 43 vs. 40 or fewer; Tables 1, 3), a longer caudal peduncle (21.9���23.7% SL vs. shorter than 20.8%), and the depressed pelvic fin not reaching posteriorly to vertical through the dorsal-fin origin (vs. reaching posteriorly beyond vertical through dorsal-fin origin). Furthermore, the relative length of the pelvic fin separates S. grandis, S. mercurius, and S. multibranchus (pelvic-fin lengths 8.3���9.0% SL, 9.1���11.1%, and 10.0���11.9%, respectively). Lengths of both jaws and the head also separate S. grandis, S. multibranchus, and S. rex (lengths of maxilla, mandible, and head 16.7���18.2% SL, 14.3���15.3% SL, and 22.0���24.0% SL, respectively, in S. grandis vs. 18.0���21.1%, 16.0���18.5%, and 24.8���26.7%, respectively, in S. multibranchus, and 19.1���23.1%, 16.1���18.3%, and 24.3���27.6%, respectively, in S. rex). Additionally, S. grandis is further distinguished from S. rex by its shorter postorbital length (11.5���12.4% SL in S. grandis vs. 12.6���14.9% in S. rex) (Hata & Motomura, 2018c; Hata et al., 2021; this study), and from S. multibranchus by its shorter dorsal- (12.6���14.8% SL vs. 14.0���16.1%) and anal-fin bases (16.0���17.8% SL vs. 18.3���21.3%) (Table 2; Fig. 4; Hata & Motomura, 2018c; Hata et al., 2021; this study). Additionally, the other three species (S. mercurius, S. multibranchus, and S. rex) have never been recorded from New Guinea and Australia, where the new species occurs. Comparative material examined. The new sardine Sardinella ventura n. sp. (Teleostei: Clupeiformes: Clupeidae) is described on the basis of 10 specimens collected from Mauritius. The new species is most similar to Sardinella dayi Regan 1917 in having non-deciduous scales with pores and discontinuous striae, a dark spot on the dorsal-fin origin, the pelvic fin with 8 rays, and similar number of gill rakers, in addition to very similar numbers of keeled scutes. However, the new species is distinguished from S. dayi by having a shorter caudal peduncle [6.2–7.6% SL (mean 7.0%) vs. 8.2–12.0% (9.2%) in S. dayi], larger eye [8.4–9.9% (9.0%) vs. 6.8–8.0% (7.4%)] and orbit [9.6–12.3% (10.7%) vs. 8.5–10.2% (9.3%)], longer pectoral [21.0–22.7% (21.5%) vs. 17.0–21.0% (19.8%)] and pelvic fins [12.5–13.5% (12.8%) vs. 10.4–12.2% (11.2%)], and a greater numbers of pseudobranchial filaments [17–19 (modally 17) vs. 18–22 (19)], lateral scale rows in longitudinal series [41–43 (41) vs. 38–42 (40)] and transverse scales [11 or 12 (12) vs. 11]. There were significant differences in seven meristic and 14 morphometric characters between the two species.
