Worldwide energy demand has been growing steadily during the past five decades and most experts believe that this trend will continue to rise. The amount of emitted harmful emission gases increases in parallel with increasing energy consumption. This increase has forced many countries to take various precautions, and various restrictions on emitted emissions have been carried. In this study, effects of addition of oxygen containing nanoparticle additives to biodiesel on fuel properties and effects on diesel engine performance and exhaust emissions were investigated. Two different nanoparticle additives, namely MgO and SiO2, were added to biodiesel at the addition dosage of 25 and 50 ppm. Fuel properties, engine performance, and exhaust emission characteristics of obtained modified fuels were examined. As a result of this study, engine emission values NOxand CO were decreased and engine performance values slightly increased with the addition of nanoparticle additives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, local vegetable oil named as Ricinus Communis (RC) is used as the raw material for the production of biodiesel. In order to obtain RC oil, Soxhalet Extraction apparatus was used. This paper deals with the transesterification of Ricinus Communis oil with methanol to produce biodiesel. Moreover, this study analysis the fuel properties of RC biodiesel and soybean biodiesel blends. Various properties of the RC biodiesel, Soybean biodiesel and their blends such as the cold filter plugging point (CFPP), cetane number, flash point, kinematic viscosity and density were determined. Test results were compared well with European biodiesel standards EN 14214. Analysis showed that the cetane number and the cold flow behavior of the RC biodiesel and soybean biodiesel blends were improved due to the high cetane number (80) and the low cold filter plugging point (-35 °C) of RC biodiesel. Main objective of this study is to compare performance and emission characteristics of a pilot injection diesel engine with the additions of alternative fuels like pure hydrogen, HHO and biodiesel. In order to achieve this goal, Helianthus annuus (sunflower) biodiesel was produced and blended with volumetric ratio of 10% with diesel fuel. Additionally, intake air was enriched with pure hydrogen or HHO via intake manifold without any structural changes except reduction of injected diesel fuel on the 3.6 L, four cylinders, four stroke diesel engines. Amount of Hydrogen fuel supplied to the engine was adjusted to constant 10 L/min during the experiments. The effects of pure hydrogen and HHO usage with the addition of biodiesel to the engine performance values (Brake Torque, Brake Power and Brake Specific Fuel Consumption) and exhaust emission values (NO x , CO 2 , CO) were investigated in between 1200 and 2600 rpm engine speeds. Engine performance values were increased with the enriching the intake air with HHO than pure hydrogen compared to the standard diesel fuel operating condition. On the other hand, in terms of exhaust gas emissions, pure hydrogen provided better results than HHO. In both cases, changes on the engine performance results were minimal however improvements on exhaust gas emissions were very promising. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: In this study, usability of cotton oil soapstock biodiesel–diesel fuel blends as an alternative fuel for diesel engines were studied. Biodiesel was produced by reacting cotton oil soapstock with methyl alcohol at determined optimum condition. The cotton oil biodiesel–diesel fuel blends were tested in a single cylinder direct injection diesel engine. Engine performances and smoke value were measured at full load condition. Torque and power output of the engine with cotton oil soapstock biodiesel–diesel fuel blends decreased by 5.8% and 6.2%, respectively. Specific fuel consumption of engine with cotton oil soapstock–diesel fuel blends increased up to 10.5%. At maximum torque speeds, smoke level of engine with blend fuels decreased up to 46.6%, depending on the amount of biodiesel. These results were compared with diesel fuel values.
