Identifying factors that associate with more cited or higher quality research may be useful to improve science or to support research evaluation. This article reviews evidence for the existence of such factors in article text and metadata. It also reviews studies attempting to estimate article quality or predict long‐term citation counts using statistical regression or machine learning for journal articles or conference papers. Although the primary focus is on document‐level evidence, the related task of estimating the average quality scores of entire departments from bibliometric information is also considered. The review lists a huge range of factors that associate with higher quality or more cited research in some contexts (fields, years, journals) but the strength and direction of association often depends on the set of papers examined, with little systematic pattern and rarely any cause‐and‐effect evidence. The strongest patterns found include the near universal usefulness of journal citation rates, author numbers, reference properties, and international collaboration in predicting (or associating with) higher citation counts, and the greater usefulness of citation‐related information for predicting article quality in the medical, health and physical sciences than in engineering, social sciences, arts, and humanities. Classifying papers according to the fields of knowledge is critical to clearly understand the dynamics of scientific (sub)fields, their leading questions, and trends. Most studies rely on journal categories defined by popular databases such as WoS or Scopus, but some experts find that those categories may not correctly map the existing subfields nor identify the subfield of a specific article. This study addresses the classification problem using data from each paper (Abstract, Title, Keywords, and the KeyWords Plus) and the help of experts to identify the existing subfields and journals exclusive of each subfield. These "exclusive journals" are critical to obtain, through a pattern detection procedure that uses machine learning techniques (from software NVivo), a list of the frequent terms that are specific to each subfield. With that list of terms and with the help of optimization procedures, we can identify to which subfield each paper most likely belongs. This study can contribute to support scientific policy‐makers, funding, and research institutions—via more accurate academic performance evaluations—, to support editors in their tasks to redefine the scopes of journals, and to support popular databases in their processes of refining categories. Coauthorship prediction applies predictive analytics to bibliographic data to predict authors who are highly likely to be coauthors. In this study, we propose an approach for coauthorship prediction based on bibliographic network embedding through a graph‐based bibliographic data model that can be used to model common bibliographic data, including papers, terms, sources, authors, departments, research interests, universities, and countries. A real‐world dataset released by AMiner that includes more than 2 million papers, 8 million citations, and 1.7 million authors were integrated into a large bibliographic network using the proposed bibliographic data model. Translation‐based methods were applied to the entities and relationships to generate their low‐dimensional embeddings while preserving their connectivity information in the original bibliographic network. We applied machine learning algorithms to embeddings that represent the coauthorship relationships of the two authors and achieved high prediction results. The reference model, which is the combination of a network embedding size of 100, the most basic translation‐based method, and a gradient boosting method achieved an F1 score of 0.9 and even higher scores are obtainable with different embedding sizes and more advanced embedding methods. Scientometrics cannot offer a simple consistent method for measuring the scientific eminence of individuals. The h-index method introduced by Hirsch was found applicable for evaluating publications of senior scientists with similar publishing features, only. Some simple methods — using the number of citations and journal papers, and the number of citations obtained by the most frequently cited papers — are suggested and tested to demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of such indexes. The results indicate that calculating scientometric indexes for individuals, self-citations should be excluded and the effect of the different bibliometric features of the field should be taken into account. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze the bibliographic references contained in the scientific papers (articles and technical notes) published from 1985 to 2005 in Zootecnia Tropical (ZT), a scientific journal. Design/methodology/approach – A retrospective descriptive study is conducted using one-dimensional bibliometric indicators such as: output, bibliographic density, institutional affiliation, recentness of the documents cited, document typology, self-citations and scientific collaboration. Univariate descriptive analysis is used to study the indicators. Findings – A total of 349 scientific papers (300 articles and 49 technical notes) are reviewed; output ranged from a maximum of 34 papers in 2001 to a minimum of four in 1990, with a mean of 15 papers per volume. The papers analyzed contain a total of 5,651 bibliographic references, with an average of 19 ± 9 references per paper; the largest number of references (19 ± 33) are found in the articles and the smallest (10.5 ± 13) in the notes. Venezuelan institutions account for 89 per cent of the papers and international institutions for the remain in 11 per cent; of the Venezuelan institutions, most (62 per cent) are National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA) bodies and the rest universities and other organizations, especially the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) and Universidad de Oriente (UDO). Universities are also among the most frequent international contributors, most prominently Marianga State University in Brazil and Tucumán National University in Argentina. Around 60 per cent of the references were more than ten years old when they were cited; 21 per cent were between five and ten years old and 19 per cent less than five years old. Journal articles, with 57 per cent, are the document type most frequently cited, followed by books, with 23 per cent; the rest consisted in postgraduate theses (3 per cent), undergraduate theses (2 per cent) and congress, conference and seminar proceedings (12 per cent). The self-citation or endogamy rate in the journal is 4 per cent. Over half (53 per cent) of the papers are written by authors with the same affiliation. Inter-institutional papers account for the remaining 47 per cent, with 34 per cent involving national collaboration, particularly between the INIA and the UCV; international co-authorship comes to 13 per cent, primarily involving Brazilian and Argentine universities. Originality/value – This paper analyzes the use of information in the Venezuelan scientific community from the vantage of a specific journal, ZT. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to understand how users behave and evaluate how systems with users are essential for interactive information retrieval (IIR) research. User study methodology serves as a primary approach to answering IIR research questions. In addition to designing user study procedures, understanding the limitations of varying study designs and discussing solutions to the limitations is also critical for improving the methods and advancing the knowledge in IIR. Design/methodology/approach: Given this unresolved gap, we apply the faceted framework developed by Liu and Shah (2019) in systematically reviewing 131 IIR user studies recently published (2016–2021) on multiple IR and information science venues. Findings: Our study achieve three goals: (1) extracting and synthesizing the reported limitations on multiple aspects of user study (e.g. recruitment, tasks, study procedures, system interfaces, data analysis methods) under associated facets; (2) summarizing the reported solutions to the limitations; (3) clarifying the connections between types of limitations and types of solutions. Practical implications: The bibliography of user studies can be used by students and junior researchers who are new to user-centered IR studies as references for study design. Our results can facilitate the reflection and improvement on IR research methodology and serve as a checklist for evaluating customized IIR user studies in varying problem spaces. Originality/value: To our knowledge, this work is the first study that systematically reviews the study limitations and solutions reported by IIR researchers in articles and empirically examines their connections to different study components. The ACL Anthology is a large collection of research papers in computational linguistics. Citation data were obtained using text extraction from a collection of PDF files with significant manual postprocessing performed to clean up the results. Manual annotation of the references was then performed to complete the citation network. We analyzed the networks of paper citations, author citations, and author collaborations in an attempt to identify the most central papers and authors. In this study scientists were asked about their own publication history and their citation counts. The study shows that the citation counts of the publications correspond reasonably well with the authors' own assessments of scientific contribution. Generally, citations proved to have the highest accuracy in identifying either major or minor contributions. Nevertheless, according to these judgments, citations are not a reliable indicator of scientific contribution at the level of the individual article. In the construction of relative citation indicators, the average citation rate of the subfield appears to be slightly more appropriate as a reference standard than the journal citation rate. The study confirms that review articles are cited more frequently than other publication types. Compared to the significance authors attach to these articles they appear to be considerably “overcited.” However, there were only marginal differences in the citation rates between empirical, methods, and theoretical contributions. This paper summarizes a research program that focuses on how catalogers, other cultural heritage information workers, web/Semantic Web technologists, and the general public understand, explain, and manage resource description tasks by creating, counting, measuring, classifying, and otherwise arranging descriptions of cultural heritage resources within the bibliographic universe and beyond it. A significant effort is made to update the nineteenth- century mathematical and scientific ideas present in traditional cataloging theory to their twentieth- and twenty-first-century counterparts. There are two key elements in this approach: (1) a technique for diagrammatically depicting and manipulating large quantities of individual and grouped bibliographic entities and the relationships between them, and (2) the creation of resource description exemplars (problem-solution sets) that are intended to play theoretical, pedagogical, and IT system design roles. The publications explosion has focused renewed attention on the lowly footnote. While we are all at least partially aware of the technical functions of the citation for both the writer and the reader of the scientific paper, little is known about the norms operating in actual practice. Even less is known about the operating norms with respect to the more sociological functions, including the acknowledgement of intellectual debts or the conferral of recognition upon the works of others. This paper reviews the state of our knowledge, raises questions, and proposes suggestions and hypotheses for studying the relationships between footnoting practices among scientists and the social system of science. The effectiveness of the analytical tools used for the evaluation of scientific activity has been enhanced by the availability of bibliographic databases, in particular the standard-selling Institute for Scientific Information databases, whose operating rules are widely accepted by the scientific community. One of these rules is the availability in a single field of the institutional affiliations of all the authors of a paper. In practice this rule has been replaced by another, resulting from the inclusion of a new option, whereby records can be retrieved by the author's reprint address (Reprint Address field). The outcome is diversity in the information on affiliation that may generate some degree of uncertainty in connection with institutional attribution when discrepancies arise between the information contained in the two fields, mainly when the only option available is the reprint address. The present study found a high degree of uncertainty, however, essentially for the period prior to Web of Science, in particular for scientific evaluation in peripheral countries such as Spain. Informing Science is a young transdisciplinary science. the essential characteristics of which were defined fifteen years ago. The journal Informing Science: the International Journal of an Emerging Transdiscipline (InformSciJ) is the flagship journal of transdisciplinary Informing Science. A study about the publication's influence and readership could be pertinent to better understanding the present state of Informing Science. To this end, we have performed a bibliometric study of first generation citations from InformSciJ. Publication data from Scopus were used. A bibliometric analysis based on citations to its papers may give clear indicators about the influence of this journal among institutions, countries, and researchers. This study also provides an overview of knowledge dissemination in various disciplines. Moreover, a citations study may be a barometer of the evolution of a transdiscipline. The study demonstrates the high degree of transdisciplinarity of Informing Science. It is also confirmed that after more than a decade the Informing Science Institute continues to bring together researchers working in IS from many disciplines and nations. This article presents information about the Fifteenth Annual Conference of the Graduate Library School of the University of Chicago, which was organized in July 1950. The conference was based on the subject of bibliographic organization. The program consisted of the presentation of fourteen papers presented over a period of six days. The primary objective of the conference was not to present a survey of existing facilities but rather to bring together a wide variety of points of view concerning the problems of bibliographic organization, and thereby to try to bring about an understanding, if not a consensus of opinion regarding basic problems which must be solved before an effective organization of the world of recorded materials can be developed.

New e-information formats and e-services have been developed to support academics in their scholarly communication and access to information. With ever-increasing prices of electronic journals, scholars and librarians have made an aggressive move toward the creation of a new model of information exchange-open access to scholarly communication and information. This paper discusses the participation of librarians in the new model and seeks an answer to the question of why many librarians have been reluctant to contribute to scholarly communication through an involvement in digital publishing. The paper describes the production process of the Electronic Green Journal, a tool for the communication of current environmental research, bibliographies, book reviews, and news about international information resources that are beneficial for building environmental literacy. Purpose: This paper aimed to understand the characteristics of and changes in research on Japanese public library services for older adults over time, as well as to identify future research directions, in relation to the social trends surrounding this demographic. Methods: First, literature and web surveys were employed to research and clarify the social trends surrounding older adults in Japan, from the period of rapid economic growth to the present. Policy documents of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) and Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), as well as gerontology research results, were the main texts used. Next, focusing on 168 references extracted from CiNii, BIBLIS PLUS, the Current Awareness Portal, and the Bibliography of Library and Information Science, the characteristics and changes in research on services for older adults in public libraries were discussed in relation to the related social trends. Results: The analysis revealed that research on services for this population in Japanese public libraries can be divided into five phases: Phase I: emerging awareness of older adults; Phase II: beginning of the search for services; Phase III: transitioning to an independent user category; Phase IV: deepening awareness of this population and diversification of services; and Phase V: focusing on dementia and strengthening cooperation. Although there are some differences among the phases, it is clear that public library research on older adults has followed specific social trends in many cases. Finally, two important issues were identified for future research: the continuous recognition of the actual situation of older adults and the discussion of services from diverse perspectives. This paper introduces a framework for conducting and writing an effective literature review. The target audience for the framework includes information systems (IS) doctoral students, novice IS researchers, and other IS researchers who are constantly struggling with the development of an effective literature-based foundation for a proposed research. The proposed framework follows the systematic data processing approach comprised of three major stages: 1) inputs (literature gathering and screening), 2) processing (following Bloom's Taxonomy), and 3) outputs (writing the literature review). This paper provides the rationale for developing a solid literature review including detailed instructions on how to conduct each stage of the process proposed. Bibliography provides a compelling vantage from which to study the interconnection of classification, rhetoric, and the making of knowledge. Bibliography, and the related activities of classification and retrieval, bears a direct relationship to textual studies and rhetoric. The paper examines this relationship by briefly tracing the development of bibliography forward into issues concomitant with the emergence of classification for retrieval. A striking similarity to problems raised in rhetoric and which spring from common concerns and intellectual sources is demonstrated around Gadamer's notion of intellectual horizon. Classification takes place within a horizon of material conditions and social constraints that are best viewed through a hermeneutic or deconstructive lens, termed the "classificatory horizon." This study used citation analysis in conjunction with a subjective rubric with five criteria deemed valid by a majority of committee chairs at the writers' institution to assess the quality of 144 dissertation reference lists from a non-traditional program. Criteria included the breadth of resources; the depth of the literature review as shown through the citing of critical historical and theoretical works; depth as demonstrated through the scholarliness of citations chosen; currency; and relevancy. The results were then compared with citations from 59 dissertation reference lists purposively selected from a list of 10 traditional institutions. This social-constructive theory-based approach ascertained that there was no statistically significant difference between traditional or non-traditional scores for any criteria except breadth of resources which measures the number and variety of citation sources. This paper presents an examination of the bibliographic control efforts in Pakistan in general and specifically of the bibliographic control of Library and Information Science (LIS) literature in Pakistan. It narrates the institutional as well as individual efforts for the bibliographic control of LIS literature. It also identifies the areas of concern for bibliographic control in Pakistan and recommends measures to overcome the problems being faced in this regard. Paper concludes that although history of bibliographic work in Pakistan is very rich but due to a number of problems, comprehensive bibliographic control of US literature remained incomplete. This paper presents a novel approach to the visualization of research domains in science and technology. The proposed methodology is based on the use of bibliometrics; i.e., analysis is conducted using information regarding trends and patterns of publication rather than the actual content. In particular, we explore the use of term co-occurrence frequencies as an indicator of semantic closeness between pairs of terms. To demonstrate the utility of this approach, a number of visualizations are generated for a collection of renewable energy related keywords. As these keywords are regarded as manifestations of the associated research topics, we contend that the proposed visualizations can be interpreted as representations of the underlying technology landscape. Purpose – This paper seeks to explore the nexus between records and risks. It briefly traces different conceptualizations and the historical evolution of risk and risk management and analyzes discourse on risk and the use of risk management in the field of records management and allied disciplines such as archives and information science.Design/methodology/approach – The methodological approach involves searching for and extracting for analysis references to "risk" in articles from well-known journals and subjecting the 248 references to a visual analysis.Findings – The visual analysis reveals 15 distinct, and in some cases conceptually related topics or categories of articles on risk. These are analysed further to create a typology of seven distinct topics of discourse defining the records-risk nexus in the sampled literature.Originality/value – This paper contributes an analysis of the literature on records and risk that defines the nexus between the two subjects, presents a typology of discourse on the records-risk nexus, and demonstrates the use of an innovative methodology (visual analysis) for analysis of large sets of bibliographic data. Purpose - The purpose of this research is to examine the practical potentials of Bradford's law in relation to core-journal identification. Design/methodology/approach - Literature studies and empirical tests (Bradford analyses). Findings - Literature studies reveal that the concept of ‘subject’ has never been explicitly addressed in relation to Bradford's law. The results of two empirical tests (Bradford analyses) demonstrate that different operationalizations of the concept of ‘subject’ produce quite different lists of core-journals. Further, an empirical test reveals that Bradford analyses function discriminatorily against minority views. Practical implications - Bradford analysis can no longer be regarded as an objective and neutral method. The received view on Bradford's law needs to be revised. This article presents a bibliography of several publications related to the field of documentation. "Augmenting Human Intellect: A Conceptual Framework," by D.C. Engelbart is an initial summary report of a project which takes a new and systematic approach to improving the intellectual effectiveness of the individual human being. The publication "Agricultural Documentation: The Responsibilities of Libraries & Information Services" is a report of seven papers and a summary presented at a seminar arranged by the European Productivity Agency, during April 20-23, 1960. "Information Systems Workshop. The Designer's Responsibility and His Methodology" is a collection of 12 papers based on a conference sponsored by the American Documentation Institute and the University of California, at Los Angeles during May 29 to June 1, 1962.

Normalization of citation scores using reference sets based on Web of Science subject categories ( WCs) has become an established ('best') practice in evaluative bibliometrics. For example, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings are, among other things, based on this operationalization. However, WCs were developed decades ago for the purpose of information retrieval and evolved incrementally with the database; the classification is machine-based and partially manually corrected. Using the WC 'information science & library science' and the WCs attributed to journals in the field of 'science and technology studies,' we show that WCs do not provide sufficient analytical clarity to carry bibliometric normalization in evaluation practices because of 'indexer effects.' The paper analyses Spanish scientific journals today. It contains data on the age of the journals, their format, periodicity, languages, dissemination, and national and international visibility. The objective of the paper is to carry out a bibliometric analysis of the Spanish journals currently published. Different directories, repertoires and literature databases have been consulted. The veracity of the data collected has been checked by visiting the websites of the journals and by contacting their publishers. The results point to uneven behaviours across journals in different scientific disciplines. The most relevant finding is the constant growth in the number of Spanish journals in both national and international databases. The total number of Spanish journals published at present is 3004. The highest number of journals published in Spain is found in the Social Science area (42%), followed by Humanities (25%) and Medical Sciences (19%). As to their periodicity, most journals are annual. The most commonly used language is Spanish. Despite the growing trend of both national and international databases to include more and more Spanish scientific journals, the number of Spanish journals included in the databases of the ISI Journal Citation Index (JCR of SCI and SSCI) remains low, with only 32 journals included in 2005 (1% approximately of the total journals currently published in Spain). Abstract: This paper reviews the articles published in Volumes 2–24 of the Journal of Molecular Graphics and Modelling (formerly the Journal of Molecular Graphics), focusing on the changes that have occurred in the subject over the years, and on the most productive and most cited authors and institutions. The most cited papers are those describing systems or algorithms, but the proportion of these types of article is decreasing as more applications of molecular graphics and molecular modelling are reported. Purpose — This paper aims to show how the concept of "Bibliography" has changed since the late nineteenth century. It proposes discussing what "Bibliography" did and did not include in the various stages of its development; how the study of "Bibliography" moved from the UK to the USA; how it narrowed down from an originally much wider concept and how, under the influence of French historians over the past three decades, it has widened out again, reaching a better synthesis of the study of books as material objects with the study of the history of the book. Design/methodology/approach — A discussion and critical assessment of the writings of the major main stream bibliographers and book historians is presented. Findings — From an original (nineteenth century) emphasis on enumerative bibliography, the concept of "Bibliography" widened out (from the end of the nineteenth century) to include historical bibliography and the study of books as material objects; in the mid-twentieth century this wider approach narrowed down, as a consequence of much emphasis being placed on descriptive, analytical, critical and textual bibliography. Under influence of French book historians the emphasis has changed again and the value of a wider historical approach and greater inclusivity in subjects has brought the study of historical bibliography and that of the history of the book much closer together. Research limitations/implications — This research looks only at Western Europe and the USA: Practical implications — Practical implications of this study are: the widening-out of the subject to include all physical manifestations of the book; the dimension of creative reading; and the emphasis on the importance of artifactual evidence for correct establishment and interpretation of texts has had implications for preservation. Originality/value — This paper is a critical assessment of the literature, drawing the logical consequences of its findings. This paper outlines how Loughborough University Library ensures that the bibliographic and full text databases it subscribes to are used to the a maximum. This is done through the collection of statistics, promotional activities including training and the introduction of a portal (MetaLib) and linking technologies (SFX).
