The safety and efficiency of drilling engineering are greatly impeded by destructive vibrations of drill string in air drilling, such as stick-slip, bit-bounce and their coupled vibrations. To avoid or suppress these vibrations improving the stability of drilling operations, revealing the occurrence mechanisms of abovementioned harmful vibrations are indispensable by investigating dynamics characteristics of drill string system. In this paper, an axial-torsional coupled dynamics model that can capture the motion behaviors of bottom hole assembly (BHA) is established adopting the lumped parameter method. Subsequently, a rate of penetration (ROP) model appropriating for air drilling is obtained firstly by linear fitting means. Meanwhile, a novel discontinuous support model is established to describe the bit-formation interactions. Then, BHA dynamics are discussed using numerical simulations under different vibration scenarios: normal operation; stick-slip; bit-bounce; bit-bounce and stick-slip combination. Subsequently, in two drilling modes: the continuous and intermittent drilling, the vibration mitigation strategies and dynamics sensibility study of BHA are carried out based on the parametric analysis. The results show that increasing torsional stiffness of drill-pipes, appropriately adjusting rotation speed of top driven system and dynamic weight on bit (WOB) are deemed as an effective strategy suppressing or eliminating stick-slip and bit-bounce vibrations of BHA. Suggest that the rotation speed of top driven system and dynamic WOB are 5 rad/s and 3.5 kN, respectively. Finally, the constructed probability maps allow to driller to choose reasonable mechanical parameters, thereby realizing smooth drilling operation in the air drilling.

A simple voltammetric method, employing Au nanoparticles modified glassy carbon electrode (AuNPs/ GCE), was developed for the determination of butylated hydroxylanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), and tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), the widely used synthetic phenolic antioxidants in foods. As a result, the electrochemical behavior of the antioxidants could be simultaneously detected only at the AuNPs/ GCE. The AuNPs/GCE allowed the detection of the three analytes at potentials lower than those observed at bare GCE. The stability and repeatability of the AuNPs/GCE were also confirmed in the study. Under the optimized conditions, the method presented a linear response in the concentration range of 0~330 mg/ L for TBHQ (R² = 0.9962), BHA (R² = 0.9974) and BHT (R² = 0.9968), respectively. The proposed method was effectively utilized to simultaneously quantify BHA, BHT, and TBHQ in various edible oil products. The obtained results were found to be consistent with those obtained through the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. The analytical utility of the AuNPs/GCE-based sensor was evaluated through a recovery study, achieving an average recovery of 95.56% to 104.98% for the three antioxidants. These results indicated satisfactory precision and accuracy, suggesting the potential use of the developed electroanalytical method for detecting these antioxidants in food products. Stick-slip in drilling happens when the drill bit and assembly repeatedly stop and slide due to factors like friction and torque. Using better lubricants in the drilling mud can help reduce friction, lessening stick-slip issues. Nanotechnology has improved drilling mud, making it more resistant to heat and enhancing its viscosity and friction properties. This research extensively investigates the use of nanofluids in drilling processes through thorough lab tests. It examines the impact of introducing NanoSiO2 into two types of drilling mud—freshwater bentonite (FWB) and polymer-based mud—at concentrations of 0.04%, 0.08%, 0.15%, and 0.31% under higher temperatures. The study also explores two methods of dispersing NPs using ultrasonic and solvent techniques. The results show that SiO2 nanoparticles notably improve the flow and filtering abilities of FWB mud but have negative effects on polymer-based mud. A 0.05% addition of NanoSiO2 significantly reduces friction by 52% in FWB mud. In FWB mud, all NanoSiO2 concentrations lead to a 25% decrease in mud cake thickness. Furthermore, adding NanoSiO2 to FWB mud decreases torque, with the most substantial reduction of 40% observed at 0.09% concentration (0.35 gm). On the contrary, incorporating NanoSiO2 into polymer-based mud increases fluid loss volume for all concentrations, reaching up to 36% compared to the base mud. Additionally, filter cake thickness increases eightfold, while lubricity factor doubles. Abstract Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) are two antioxidants that have been extensively used in many applications. Both are well known for their debatable health risks due to their multiple intake sources. Therefore, conservative limits are set for them in different regulations adapted to the matrices in which they exist. Here we present a simple spectrofluorimetric method for the determination of BHT and BHA based on their native fluorescence and synchronous scanning mode. The type of solvent and the interval between emission and excitation wavelengths were carefully optimized. Under the optimized conditions, good linearities were obtained between the emission intensity and the corresponding concentrations of BHT and BHA over the range of 3–18 µg/mL and 0.1–7 µg/mL, respectively with a good correlation coefficient (r > 0.99). The limits of detection were 0.9 and 0.02 µg/mL, and the quantification limits were 3 and 0.05 µg/mL for BHT and BHA, respectively. The suggested procedure was validated according to ICH guidelines Q2 (R1). Furthermore, the method’s greenness was assessed by three different methods, and it proved to be eco-reasonable. The method was successfully applied to the determination of BHT and BHA in pharmaceutical formulations. We also applied the suggested method for monitoring the residual BHA in conventional, powdered milk and butter, with good recovery in spiked samples.

This study constructs an intelligent wellbore trajectory prediction and BHA optimization process, which ensures efficient optimization of the BHA on the premise of high wellbore trajectory prediction accuracy, the MAE of deviation and azimuth angles of the borehole trajectory model was 0.35° and 0.55°. The optimized BHA can effectively improve the deflection effect. The solubilization of butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) in aqueous surfactant solutions of different architectures (anionic, cationic, and nonionic) has been investigated to improve its aqueous solubility and assess the effect of surfactant‐based multiphase environments on its antiradical activity against 1,1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Herein, we report that the micellar encapsulation and DDPH antiradical activity of BHA are highly dependent on the structure and amount of surfactant used. Radical scavenging activity (RSA) and solubilization were efficient in nonionics compared to ionics. DPPH reduction kinetics in micellar media is essential to uncover the behavior of BHA in multiphase environments commonly encountered in different food systems simulated by aqueous micelles. The study is important to identify the optimal medium for improving the solubility and antioxidant capacity of compounds like BHA, and to anticipate the effect of different micro‐heterogeneous/multiphase environments on BHA's antioxidant capability. Food additives are substances that have long been applied in processed foods, either natural or synthetic. Several purposes have been fulfilled by the application of food additives, the two most notable of which are known to be preventing food spoilage and providing specific colors and flavors. Some food additives are added to food products through direct contact, whereas the rest are added indirectly e.g., through their packaging bags. In addition to the economic and commercial benefits provided by food additives, over the past two decades, studies have demonstrated a significant correlation between excessive consumption of the foods containing such additives (e.g., BHA and BHT) and several adverse health effects, e.g., the incidence of cancer and skin conditions, among others. Through different age groups, children have been found to be the population at the highest risk for such adverse effects induced by food additives. Indeed, it has been reported that food additives may give rise to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among the child population. Emerging evidence has shown that emulsifiers (e.g., carboxymethyl cellulose and polysorbate), employed as food additives, might alter gut microbiota composition, leading to ulcerative colitis, affecting immune and inflammatory responses, and mental health problems. This paper discusses the potential of tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and alpha-tocopherol (α-T) in preventing palm biodiesel oxidation over an extended storage period of twelve weeks. A combination of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses were carried out. The FTIR spectra showed no significant changes to the carbonyl band at 1740 cm−1 across the storage period for fuels with additives, but the control had increased band intensity, which implied that additives prevented the formation of byproducts which have carbonyl groups or cyclic ether rings. From GC-MS analyses, lower transmittance at C18 methyl esters region was evident of methyl oleate, methyl linoleate and methyl linolenate being consumed to the point where their concentrations dropped below those of methyl palmitate in the sample without additives. Furthermore, the analyses indicated that 3-octyl-oxiraneoctanoic acid ME, E−10,13,13-trimethyl-11-tetradecen-1-ol acetate and 17-octadecynoic acid ME were the major oxidation byproducts. Traces of acetal, carboxylic acid, oxirane and alkylnoic acid were also detected. It was shown through HPLC analyses that TBHQ, BHA and α-T were consumed with α-T samples having the highest consumption compared to TBHQ and BHA. Overall, the findings supported the important role of additives in stabilizing the fuel and preventing oxidation during extended storage.

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) is a synthetic phenolic antioxidant widely used in various food matrices to prevent oxidative rancidity. However, its presence has been associated with liver damage and carcinogenesis in animals. Thus, an electrochemical sensor was built using a composite of gold nanoparticles synthesized in peach extract (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) and graphene. Peach extract served as a reducing and stabilizing agent for gold nanoparticles, as a dispersing agent for graphene, and as a film former to immobilize the composite on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode. The gold nanoparticles were characterized using spectroscopic and microscopic techniques, and the electrodes were electrochemically characterized using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The sensor provided higher current responses and lower charge transfer resistances compared to the unmodified glassy carbon electrode. Under the established optimized working conditions (0.1 mol L−1 Britton–Robinson buffer, pH 4.0, and differential pulse voltammetry), the calibration curve exhibited a linear range from 0.2 to 9.8 µmol L–1, with a detection limit of 70 nmol L−1. Stick-slip vibration is a common phenomenon met in oil gas drilling, especially in the complex trajectory wells such as highly-deviated wells, it will cause the earlier failure of BHA (bottom hole assembly) and lower drilling efficiency. In this present paper, a finite element model of highly-deviated well, which consists of a drill string system, a borehole, a PDC bit (Polycrystalline Diamond Compact bit) and a rock model, is carried out to investigate the stick–slip vibration behaviors of drill bit and BHA. Besides, the torsional impact drilling method is proposed in the context to control the stick–slip vibration of BHA. The research results show that, the phenomenon of stick–slip vibration of BHA gradually weaken and disappear with the distance from the drill bit increases, and the stick–slip vibration mainly occurs at the BHA which near drill bit. The high frequency torsional impact drilling method can reduce the resistance torque of the bit by 34.71%, and increase the drilling depth by about 58.28%. It can effectively improve the drilling efficiency of the bit, making the rotation of drill bit becomes relatively more stable, and reducing or even eliminating the stick–slip vibration. These results lead to an enhanced understanding of stick–slip vibration behaviors of drill bit and BHA in highly-deviated wells, and provide the basis for improving the drilling efficiency.

The photooxidation of rosin and its derivatives (abietic acid and rosin pentaerythritol ester) with antioxidant BHA was carried out in a polyethylene film microreactor under 254 nm UV light in an incubator at 30 °C ・ UV spectrophotometry was used to track and monitor their photooxidation process・ The effect of antioxidant BHA on photooxidation of rosin and its derivatives was investigated・ The results showed that the addition of antioxidant BHA could effectively slow down the photooxidation rate of rosin and its products ・ The antioxidant effect of antioxidant BHA was rosin > abietic acid > rosin pentaerythritol ester. Biopolymeric films were prepared with gelatin, plasticizer, and three different types of antioxidants (ascorbic acid, phytic acid, and BHA) corresponding to different mechanisms in activity. The antioxidant activity of films was monitored for 14 storage days upon color changes using a pH indicator (resazurin). The instant antioxidant activity of films was measured by a DPPH free radical test. The system using resazurin was composed of an agar, an emulsifier, and soybean oil to simulate a highly oxidative oil-based food system (AES-R). Gelatin-based films (GBF) containing phytic acid showed higher tensile strength and energy to break than all other samples due to the increased intermolecular interactions between phytic acid and gelatin molecules. The oxygen barrier properties of GBF films containing ascorbic acid and phytic acid increased due to the increased polarity, while GBF films containing BHA showed increased oxygen permeability compared to the control. According to "a-value" (redness) of the AES-R system tested with films, films incorporating BHA showed the most retardation of lipid oxidation in the system. This retardation corresponds to 59.8% antioxidation activity at 14 days, compared with the control. Phytic acid-based films did not show antioxidant activity, whereas ascorbic acid-based GBFs accelerated the oxidation process due to its prooxidant activity. The comparison between the DPPH free radical test and the control showed that the ascorbic acid and BHA-based GBFs showed highly effective free radical scavenging behavior (71.7% and 41.7%, respectively). This novel method using a pH indicator system can potentially determine the antioxidation activity of biopolymer films and film-based samples in a food system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To study the mechanism and control of well deviation in air drilling, a mechanical model of bottom hole assembly (BHA) with double stabilizer is established by using the beam-column method. The mathematical model related to side force of BHA and deviating force of strata are derived by analyzing the characteristics of gravel strata in the practical engineering. The effects of weight on bit (WOB), expansion ratio of borehole diameter (ERBD), angle of well inclination, diameter of drill collar and strata bending moment on side force of BHA are explored. Then, the superposition of bit side force and deviating force of strata is obtained. The results display that side force of BHA is obviously influenced by ERBD, angle of well inclination, diameter of drill collar and strata bending moment; and the deviation force and azimuth force of gravel strata are significantly affected by comprehensive cutting anisotropy index, angle of well inclination and dip angle of strata. Finally, the variation tendency of inclination angle and azimuth angle in field measurement is consistent with the theoretical and numerical researches. Fossil fuels are depended upon often in the transport sector. The use of diesel engines in all areas produce pollutants, such as NOx and CO, which cause serious environmental pollution and hazards, such as global climate change and breathing difficulties. Conventional fuel usage should be reduced, and there should be a shift toward alternative fuels. For compression ignition (CI) engines, microalgae biodiesel has been promoted as a clean, sustainable fuel. This is because it possesses desired traits, such as a quick rate of development, high productivity, and the capacity to turn CO2 into fuel. When algal biodiesel is used, pollutants, such as CO, UBHC, and smoke, are typically reduced, whereas NOx emissions are typically increased. The adoption of an exhaust gas recirculation technology and the advancement or delay of injection timing can effectively reduce NOx formation. Incorporating antioxidant chemicals such as butylated hydroxyl anisole (BHA) into fuel also minimizes NOx formation. In this study, the use of microalgae biodiesel as a substitute fuel for CI engines was investigated by altering the injection timing and adding each antioxidant in two doses. According to ASTM standard test procedures for biodiesel, the fuel qualities of various blends of algal biodiesel with antioxidants were tested and compared with the diesel fuel. The experiments were conducted using CI engines, and parameters were examined, such UBHC, CO, NOx, and smoke opacity. In comparison to diesel fuel, B20 + 30% BHA (21 bTDC) blends produced 49% lower oxides of nitrogen. The smoke, HC, and CO emissions of fuel blend B20 + 30% BHA (25 bTDC) were reduced by 33.33%, 32.37%, and 11.21%, respectively, compared with those of diesel fuel. The fuel blend B20 + 30% BHA (25 bTDC) showed the highest brake thermal efficiency of 14.52% at peak load condition. A multi-output regression deep long short-term memory (MDLSTM) model was designed to predict the performance and emissions of CI engines operating with varied fuel mixtures. Butylated hydroxyl anisole (BHA) is manufactured from a mixture of two isomeric organic compounds, 2-tertiary-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole and 3-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole, and is widely used in poultry feed as a phenolic free radical scavenger. The current search investigated the impact of different doses of BHA on some hematological and hormonal features of broiler. Fifty-four one-day-old birds were utilized in this study randomly divided into three groups, the control group was given a standard ratio, the 2ed group was given a standard diet filled up with BHA at a rate of 2.5 mg/kg feed, and the 3rd group was given a standard ration fill up with BHA at a rate of 5 mg/kg feed by 18 birds/group, each with three replicates (6 birds/ repeated cycle). The study included three age stages (15, 30, and 45) days. The results showed a significant rise in RBC, WBC, lymphocytes, MCH, SOD, and CAT for the two groups of BHA during 30 and 45 days of treatment compared with the control with a significant improvement in the stress index, as well as a significant decrease in MCV during the three periods of treatment. Supplementation with BHA in both doses caused a significant rise in T3 and T4 during 45 days of the study compared with the control group. We deduce from this research that adding BHA to the poultry diets improved physiological and hormonal characteristics due to its ability to scavenge free radicals. It promotes significant health and growth.

In this present paper, a finite element model of highly-deviated well, which consists of a drill string system, a borehole, a PDC bit (Polycrystalline Diamond Compact bit) and a rock model, is carried out to investigate the stick–slip vibration behaviors of drill bit and BHA. Besides, the torsional impact drilling method is proposed in the context to control the stick–slip vibration of BHA. The research results show that, the phenomenon of stick–slip vibration of BHA gradually weaken and disappear with the distance from the drill bit increases, and the stick–slip vibration mainly occurs at the BHA which near drill bit. The high frequency torsional impact drilling method can reduce the resistance torque of the bit by 34.71%, and increase the drilling depth by about 58.28%. It can effectively improve the drilling efficiency of the bit, making the rotation of drill bit becomes relatively more stable, and reducing or even eliminating the stick–slip vibration. These results lead to an enhanced understanding of stick–slip vibration behaviors of drill bit and BHA in highly-deviated wells, and provide the basis for improving the drilling efficiency. In the present study, the effect of frozen storage on quality-related parameters of Pangas (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) minced meat was evaluated on 4 samples stored for 120 days. Cryoprotectant and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) were used in the minced meat to see their effect on frozen storage quality. The protein and other biochemical compositions of minced meat decreased significantly (p<0.05) with the increase in Total volatile base-nitrogen (TVB-N), peroxide value (PV), pH and total plate count (TPC) during storage. Texture quality was improved during storage. Based on the study, sample treated with BHA and cryoprotectants had no synergetic effect on minced meat during frozen storage and proving longer shelf life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The demand for processed foods relies heavily on synthetic antioxidants like TBHQ and BHA to prevent spoilage. However, their excessive use poses health risks, prompting regulatory measures in many countries to ensure food safety. In this concern, a proficient electrochemical sensor for the simultaneous detection of tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) was designed. A comparatively greener hydroxyapatite (HAP) supported zinc ferrite (ZF) nanosensor was developed with conducting coating of Pd nanoparticles. A consolidated and mechanistic approach was opted to reduce the band gap and agglomeration the magnetic ZF nanoparticles. The interesting spherocuboidal morphology of the synthesized nanocomposite with good porosity enhanced the detection performance of the sensor. The proposed platform displayed good detection limits of both TBHQ and BHA (0.73 and 5.6 nM for TBHQ and BHA, respectively). The nanosensor successfully detected TBHQ and BHA in food samples proved its potential for the development of commercially competitive sensor. The most widely used biomaterials in the treatment of massive bone defects are allograft bone or metal implants. The current problem is that the availability of allographs is limited and metal implants are very expensive. Mass production of secretome can make bone reconstruction of massive bone defects using a scaffold more effective and efficient. This study aims to prove bone regeneration in massive bone defects using bovine hydroxyapatite reconstruction with normoxic and hypoxic secretome conditions using collagen type 1 (COL1), alkaline phosphate (ALP), osteonectin (ON), and osteopontin (OPN) parameters. This is an in vivo study using male New Zealand white rabbits aged 6–9 months. The research was carried out at the Biomaterials Center—Tissue Bank, Dr. Soetomo Hospital for the manufacturer of bovine hydroxyapatite (BHA) and secretome BM-MSC culture under normoxic and hypoxic conditions, and UNAIR Tropical Disease Institute for implantation in experimental animals. Data analysis was carried out with the one-way ANOVA statistical test and continued with the Post Hoc test LSD statistical test to determine whether or not there were significant differences between groups. There were significant differences between hypoxic to normoxic group and hypoxic to BHA group at day-30 observation using ALP, COL 1, ON, and OPN parameters. Meanwhile, there is only osteonectin parameter has significant difference at day-30 observation. At day-60 observation, only OPN parameter has significant differences between hypoxic to normoxic and hypoxic to BHA group. Between day-30 and day-60 observation, BHA and normoxic groups have a significant difference at all parameters, but in hypoxic group, there are only difference at ALP, COL 1, and ON parameters. Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) is one of important phenolic antioxidants and its fate in the environment has attracted much attention in recent years. In this study, the initial reactions of BHA with OH radicals, including 8 abstraction reactions and 6 addition reactions, were calculated. The lowest energy barrier of 3.20 kcal mol−1 was found from the abstraction reaction on phenolic hydroxyl group. The reaction barriers of addition paths are in the range of 5.48–9.28 kcal mol−1, which are lower than those of the abstraction paths. The reaction rate constants were calculated by using transition state theory, and the rate constants are 8.12 × 107 M−1 s−1and 4.76 × 107 M−1 s−1 for the H-abstraction and OH-addition reactions, respectively. Through the calculation of the subsequent reactions of the abs-H0-TS1 and add-C4-M1 it was found that BHA would be further transformed into 2-tert-Butyl-1,4-benzoquinone (TBQ), tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) etc. in the aqueous phase, and the eco-toxicities of these transformed products of BHA in the aqueous phase were significantly increased comparing with that of the BHA and they are toxic to aquatic organism.

Biopolymeric films were prepared with gelatin, plasticizer, and three different types of antioxidants (ascorbic acid, phytic acid, and BHA) corresponding to different mechanisms in activity. The antioxidant activity of films was monitored for 14 storage days upon color changes using a pH indicator (resazurin). The instant antioxidant activity of films was measured by a DPPH free radical test. The system using resazurin was composed of an agar, an emulsifier, and soybean oil to simulate a highly oxidative oil-based food system (AES-R). Gelatin-based films (GBF) containing phytic acid showed higher tensile strength and energy to break than all other samples due to the increased intermolecular interactions between phytic acid and gelatin molecules. The oxygen barrier properties of GBF films containing ascorbic acid and phytic acid increased due to the increased polarity, while GBF films containing BHA showed increased oxygen permeability compared to the control. According to “a-value” (redness) of the AES-R system tested with films, films incorporating BHA showed the most retardation of lipid oxidation in the system. This retardation corresponds to 59.8% antioxidation activity at 14 days, compared with the control. Phytic acid-based films did not show antioxidant activity, whereas ascorbic acid-based GBFs accelerated the oxidation process due to its prooxidant activity. The comparison between the DPPH free radical test and the control showed that the ascorbic acid and BHA-based GBFs showed highly effective free radical scavenging behavior (71.7% and 41.7%, respectively). This novel method using a pH indicator system can potentially determine the antioxidation activity of biopolymer films and film-based samples in a food system.

Three novel two-dimensional metalloporphyrin COFs (MPor−COF−366, M = Fe, Mn, Cu) were fabricated by changing the metal atoms in the center of the porphyrin framework. The physicochemical characteristics of MPor−COF−366 (M = Fe, Mn, Cu) composites were fully analyzed by diverse electron microscopy and spectroscopy. Under optimal conditions, experiments on determining butylated hydroxy anisole (BHA) at FePor−COF−366/GCE were conducted using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). It is noted that the FePor−COF−366/GCE sensor showed excellent electrocatalytic performance in the electrochemical detection of BHA, compared with MnPor−COF−366/GCE and CuPor−COF−366/GCE. A linear relationship was obtained for 0.04–1000 μM concentration of BHA, with a low detection limit of 0.015 μM. Additionally, the designed sensor was successfully employed to detect BHA in practical samples, expanding the development of COF-based composites in electrochemical applications.

BHA is a waxy solid consisting for > 98.5% of the active substance, a mixture of 3‐tert‐butyl‐4‐hydroxyanisole and 2‐tert‐butyl‐4‐hydroxyanisole and is currently authorised for use in all animal species except in cats. In support of the safety of the additive for the target species, the applicant has submitted a tolerance study which demonstrated that BHA is tolerated by cats at a concentration up to 150 mg/kg complete feed. The additive should be considered a skin, eye irritant and a potential skin sensitiser. Exposure of the user via inhalation was considered unlikely; therefore, a risk is not expected. BHA is authorised as an antioxidant for food use at comparable use levels; therefore, no studies were required to demonstrate the efficacy of BHA as an antioxidant in complete feed for cats.

The antioxidant activity of phenolic compounds [thymol (T), carvacrol (C), and thymoquinone (TQ)] was compared with commercial antioxidants [butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and α-tocopherol] using the β-carotene bleaching and ABTS assays. At 1000 ppm concentration, commercial antioxidants showed better antioxidative properties (94.9-95.9%) than phenolic compounds (64.9-85.7%) according to β-carotene bleaching assay. In the ABTS assay, except for BHT, BHA and α-tocopherol exhibited stronger radical scavenging activity than phenolic compounds. Regarding the Rancimat method, BHT-enriched stripped sunflower oil (SSO) had the longest induction period. At the same time, phenolic compounds caused a slightly higher increase in the induction periods than the control sample. Refined sunflower oil (RSO) enriched with BHT at 100 ppm was the most stabile during storage at 60°C. Phenolic compounds added to RSO at 250, and 500 ppm exhibited less protection to lipid oxidation than BHT, while phenolic compounds, notably TQ, improved the RSO’s oxidative stability. BHT at 100 ppm showed a strong antioxidant effect on SSO during storage at 60°C. The effect of phenolic compounds, especially TQ on SSO, were lower than BHT, but higher than the control sample at 60°C. This research work examined and likened effect of eugenol a natural phenolic compound with butylated hydroxylanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT) synthetic phenolic compounds with key biomolecules [acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), and monoamine oxidase (MAO)] relevant to Alzheimer's diseases (AD) in vitro. Ten millimolar each sample was prepared in a mixture of ethanol and water (1:1 v/v), and the interactions with AChE, BChE, and MAO were evaluated. Still, ferric reducing antioxidant property, ABTS radicals scavenging ability and lipid peroxidation were carried out. The results revealed eugenol, BHT, and BHA inhibited AChE, BChE, and MAO activities dose‐dependently. Though, eugenol had greater inhibitory effect against AChE and BChE activities. Also, eugenol demonstrated higher antioxidant potential compared to BHT and BHA. The potent enzymatic inhibitory and antioxidant effects of eugenol indicate eugenol could be promising as an alternative food additive and neuromodulator in AD management. Practical application: BHT and BHA are synthetic antioxidant employed industrially as food preservative. BHT and BHA are employed in food packaging, drugs, and cosmetics. Although BHT and BHA are widely in use but have been found were associated with alteration in sleeping, induced changes in brain serotonin and norepinephrine levels with increased cholinesterase activity. Endocrine disrupting effects, reproductive disorder is more side effects associated with the use of BHT and BHA. However, eugenol a natural compound found in plants compares favorably with BHT and BHA as antioxidant with many more health promoting benefits such as neuroprotective effects, antiapoptotic effects, and prevent aluminum toxicity. Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) has been widely used in the cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and food industries due to its antioxidant activity. Despite the antioxidant effects, reported adverse effects of BHA at the cellular level have made its use controversial. In this regard, this study was performed to elucidate the potential toxicity mechanism caused by BHA at the molecular level in zebrafish embryos. For this purpose, zebrafish embryos were exposed to BHA at levels of 0.5, 1, 5, 7.5 and 10 ppm and monitored at 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours. Survival rate, hatching rate and malformations were evaluated. We examined the potential for reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and apoptosis signalling accumulation in the whole body. Moreover, we evaluated histopathological and immunohistochemical (8-OHDG) characterization of the brain in zebrafish embryos at the 96th hour. We also examined apoptosis, histopathological and immunohistochemical (8-OHDG) characteristics in 96 hpf zebrafish larvae exposed to tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), one of the major metabolites of BHA, at doses of 0.5, 2.5, 3.75 and 5 ppm. Consequently, it has been considered that increased embryonic and larval malformations in this study may have been caused by ROS-induced apoptosis. After 96 h of exposure, positive 8-OHdG immunofluorescence, degenerative changes, and necrosis were observed in the brain of BHA and TBHQ-treated zebrafish larvae in a dose-dependent manner. BHA and TBHQ exposure could lead to an increase in 8-OHdG activities by resulting oxidative DNA damage. In particular, the obtained data indicate that the induction of ROS formation, occurring during exposure to BHA and/or multiple hydroxyl groups, could be responsible for apoptosis. Based on DFT, B3LYP method was used to optimize the structure of 3-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole (BHA) molecule at the level of 6-311g(d,p) set level. On this basis, the first 50 excited states were calculated by using B3LYP/def 2-TZVP method based on TD-DFT with ethanol as solvent. Multiwfn 3.6 software was used to plot the UV spectrum, and three methods including atomic charges, Fukui function (FF) and electrostatic potential (ESP) were used to predict its electrophilic reactive sites. Finally, bond energy of O10–H11 and C12–O13 were investigated by the ωB97XD/TZVP method. Comparing the experimental and theoretical UV spectra, it was found that the overall agreement was good. The oxygen atom on the phenolic hydroxyl group and the oxygen atom on the ether bond are the electrophilic reactive sites. And the C12–O13 bond on the ether bond is more prone to dissociation. The antioxidant activities of natural phenolic compounds (thymol, carvacrol, and thymoquinone) were compared with commercial antioxidants (α-tocopherol, BHT, and BHA) using DPPH·, conjugated diene (CD) in the linoleic acid emulsion, and ferric reducing power methods. Commercial antioxidants had higher DPPH· antiradical activity than natural phenolics. Thymoquinone (TQ) at 1000 ppm showed higher inhibition (65.7%) on DPPH· radicals than other natural phenolics at 1000 ppm (25.0% for thymol, and 18.3% for carvacrol). Carvacrol and thymol showed similar antioxidant activities compared with BHT and BHA in linoleic acid emulsion test at different concentrations, while TQ and α-tocopherol exhibited lower activity among analyzed samples. The results from reducing power test showed that natural phenolics were less effective than commercial antioxidants. The impacts of natural phenolics and BHT on the oxidative stabilities of refined and stripped corn oils were investigated using the Rancimat, Schaal oven, peroxide value (PV), CD (K232) and p-anisidine value (p-AV) methods. The loss in total tocopherols in refined corn oils was recorded during storage under Schaal oven conditions (60 °C). BHT showed a higher induction period (15.01 h) than phenolic compounds added to corn oils (3.88–5.69 h) and a control sample (2.82 h). According to the results of the Schaal oven test, BHT much better protected the refined and stripped corn oils from oxidation than natural phenolic compounds. Among phenolic compounds, TQ at 250 and 500 ppm exhibited high antioxidant potential in refined and stripped corn oils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Antioxidant food additives were routinely used for increasing the keeping quality of packaged food items. Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) is one of the most widely used synthetic phenolic antioxidants of such kind. Although quantity of antioxidants in packaged eatables and admissible daily intake (ADI) per person per day are limited by laws, the urbanisation and changes in lifestyle has cross these limits. Although studies on BHA has been carried out, there exists a great deal of uncertainty about the exact molecular mechanism of interaction of BHA with various receptors in the body. Since earlier reports suggested BHA plausibly interferes with reproductive system development, we opted docking of critical receptors of endogenous hormones controlling growth and development of reproductive system with BHA. Nuclear receptors of estrogen (ER), androgen (AR) and progesterone (PR) were selected for this purpose. This manuscript describes the comparison of binding pattern of BHA towards AR, ER and PR along with their agonists and antagonist. Lamarckian Genetic Algorithm of AutoDock 4.0 was used for analysing the mode of binding of ligands with the receptors. It is evident form the docking studies that, BHA exhibited similar binding pattern' with antagonists of AR and agonists of ER. But the interaction of BHA with PR was not compatible with either agonists or antagonists. The docking patterns produced could reliably demonstrate the interactions of BHA with selected receptors and also predict its possible agonistic and antagonistic action. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rapid and tremendous advances in wireless technology, miniaturization, and Internet of things (IoT) technology have brought significant development to vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). VANETs and IoT together play a vital role in the current intelligent transport system (ITS). However, a VANET is highly vulnerable to various security attacks due to its highly dynamic, decentralized, open-access medium, and protocol-design-related concerns. Regarding security concerns, a black hole attack (BHA) is one such threat in which the control or data packets are dropped by the malicious vehicle, converting a safe path/link into a compromised one. Dropping data packets has a severe impact on a VANET’s performance and security and may cause road fatalities, accidents, and traffic jams. In this study, a novel solution called detection and prevention of a BHA (DPBHA) is proposed to secure and improve the overall security and performance of the VANETs by detecting BHA at an early stage of the route discovery process. The proposed solution is based on calculating a dynamic threshold value and generating a forged route request (RREQ) packet. The solution is implemented and evaluated in the NS-2 simulator and its performance and efficacy are compared with the benchmark schemes. The results showed that the proposed DPBHA outperformed the benchmark schemes in terms of increasing the packet delivery ratio (PDR) by 3.0%, increasing throughput by 6.15%, reducing the routing overhead by 3.69%, decreasing the end-to-end delay by 6.13%, and achieving a maximum detection rate of 94.66%.

Solvent with different polarity used used in extraction of antioxidant compound from temu Lawak (Curcuma xanthoriza Roxb.) and Temu Ireng (Curcuma Aerugonosa Roxb.) spices. The solvent are Enthanol and acetone. Antioxidant extracts were analyzed in “neutralizer free radical” activity with DPPH Radical Scavenging Method. The activity compared with synthetic antioxidant BHA. Result of the research perform that Temu Lawak and Temu Ireng spices were potential as neutralizer free radical. Antioxidant extract of Temu Lawak spices have higher activity than Temu Ireng spices extract. The “neutralizer free radical” activity of 1% Temu Lawak extract is 1,9 times 300 ppm BHA activity, and 1% Temu Ireng extract is 1,24 times 300 ppm BHA activity. Solvent influential at “neutralizer free radical” activity of Temu Ireng spices extract, but it doesn’t influential at Temu lawak spices extract.

As one of the most advanced international drilling technologies at present, rotary steering has been extensively applied to large-displacement, long-distance horizontal, and complex structural wells with numerous advantages, such as strong steering deflecting capacity and good borehole quality. Push-the-bit rotary steering is nowadays commercially applied on a large scale. In the bottom hole assembly (BHA) design of push-the-bot rotary steering drilling, flexible pup joints are the main components that exert an important effect on the exertion of steering deflecting capacity of push-the-bit rotary steering tools. The effect of flexible pup joints on steering capacity of BHA used in the push-the-bit rotary steering drilling process was investigated through a finite element analysis and their action laws were summarized. The results indicated that in order to optimize the deflecting capacity of rotary steering drilling tools, flexible pup joints should be installed cooperatively so as to obtain greater steering drilling capacity. In the rotary steering drilling process, as the outer diameter of flexible pup joints increased, the maximum stress of the BHA decreased. Side cutting force of the drill would increase with the length of pup joints, but this would result in degradation of anti-torsion performance of the BHA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biodiesel is an alternative to mineral fuels, with advantages such as biodegradability. However, this makes biodiesel unstable to oxidation. In this way, the use of natural or synthetic antioxidants is necessary. Although many studies have paid attention to the effect of these antioxidants on oxidation stability, not much literature about their effect of them on other properties (before and during storage) was found. The aim of this research study was to characterize biodiesel from corn and sunflower by adding two antioxidants, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and tert‐butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), in order to improve its oxidation stability. Moreover, the effect of oxidation on the parameters of biodiesel was studied by using extreme oxidation conditions to accelerate the oxidation process. Both antioxidants improved the oxidation stability of biodiesel, whereas some parameters were altered (viscosity and acid number), which could make this biofuel, if high concentrations of antioxidants are used, unsuitable for commercialization according to standards. Abstract Following a request from the European Commission, the Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety of butylated hydroxy anisole (BHA) for all animal species. In 2018, the Panel delivered an Opinion on the safety and efficacy of BHA. The Panel concluded that ‘a weight of evidence of the limited data supports that 150 mg BHA/kg complete feed would be a safe dose for all animal species. However, a possible exception could be cat, with its known lower capacity for glucuronidation of phenolic compounds and for which no specific data were available’. The Applicant submitted a review of the metabolism of phenolic compounds in cats and an in vivo study with cats. No specific information on metabolic fate of BHA has been made available for the feline species. The lack of knowledge is of particular relevance considering the additional load of phenolic compounds by dietary BHA for the full lifetime expectancy of cats. Owing the shortcomings in the design and reporting, the in vivo study could not be used to conclude on the safety of BHA for cats. Consequently, the Panel reiterates that no safe concentration of BHA in complete feed for cats could be established.
