The molecular structure of benzene dissolved in a columnar liquid crystal formed by the carbohydrate mesogen octa-omicron-decanoyl-beta-cellobiose (Cel-II-10) has been investigated using carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The orientational order of benzene in a uniaxial liquid crystal is the focus of the research and is limited only to uniaxial molecules in a uniaxial phase. Results indicate that carbon-13 lines are wide and powder-like which suggests that there is only partial alignment of the liquid crystal in the magnetic field. The traces in the right column are characteristic of a disordered uniaxial sample.
