Abstract: This paper investigated the bending strength of girth-welded stainless steel circular hollow sections by numerical method. At first, finite element simulation of girth welding process was carried out to obtain the weld-induced residual stresses and deformations employing sequentially coupled three-dimensional thermo-mechanical finite element formulation. Then, nonlinear finite element analysis in which the moment versus end-rotation response, the ultimate moment resistance and the failure mode of the girth-welded circular hollow sections under pure bending were explored incorporating the residual stresses and depressions along with the initial global geometric imperfections was performed. Feasibility of adopting the current codified provisions (Eurocode 3) for stainless steel circular hollow sections in bending as the cross-section slenderness limit for girth-welded stainless steel circular hollow section flexural members was also examined. Results showed that the flexural behavior of girth-welded stainless steel circular hollow sections always involves local buckling near the girth weld on the compression side, which significantly affects the moment versus end-rotation behavior. Moreover, the results demonstrated that the Class 3 slenderness limit of 280 from Eurocode 3 for stainless steel circular hollow sections in flexure may be applied to girth-welded stainless steel circular hollow sections subjected to bending. This paper proposes new coefficients for design bending moments for interior reinforced concrete flat plates. These design coefficients are safe for strength and serviceability and are calculated using Hillerborg's advanced strip method design approach and finite-element method. The Hillerborg-Wood-Armer rules were used to convert field moments to design moments. The paper also introduced graphs. These can be used to determine the length of the top reinforcement in an interior flat plate. The findings are the only available solution for designing flat plates with aspect ratios higher than 2.0. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a study on the strength and behavior of cold-formed steel Z-sections with simple and complex stiffeners subjected to major axis bending. The study involved both experimental and numerical investigations, in which a series of specimens were examined. All specimens were failed by the combined mode of shear and moment. The results from the investigations were analyzed and compared with the combined moment and shear strengths predicted by international design rules. The suitability of the design rules in predicting the combined capacity of Z-section with complex stiffeners was assessed through a reliability analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

General components such as pressure vessels, piping, storage tanks, and so on are designed in accordance with the construction codes based on the assumption that there are no flaws in such components. There are, however, numerous instances in which in-service single or multiple volumetric flaws such as local thin areas are found in the equipment concerned. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a fitness for service rule, which is capable of evaluating these flaws. The procedure for a single flaw or multiple flaws has recently been proposed for assessing the flaws in the p -M (pressure-moment) diagram, which is an easy way to visualize the status of the component with flaws simultaneously subjected to internal pressure p and external bending moment M due to earthquake, etc. If the assessment point (Mr,pr) lies inside the p-M line, the component with flaws is judged to be safe. In this paper, numerous experiments and finite element analysis for a cylinder with external multiple volumetric flaws were conducted under (1) pure internal pressure, (2) pure external bending moment, and (3) subjected simultaneously to both internal pressure and external bending moment, in order to determine the plastic collapse load at volumetric flaws by applying the twice-elastic slope (TES) as recommended by ASME. It has been clarified that the collapse (TES) loads are much the same as those calculated under the proposed p-M line based on the measured yield stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
