The relative contributions of asthenospheric mantle, lithospheric mantle, and continental crust in the genesis of the Siberian Traps Large Igneous Province (ST-LIP) remain poorly constrained. Most models invoke partial melting of asthenospheric mantle within a mantle plume with an inventory of recycled crustal material, with or without melting of subcontinental lithospheric mantle, and crustal contamination during ascend through the continental lithosphere. A greater understanding of this topic is of fundamental importance because the ST-LIP basalts are associated with the large Permian-Triassic extinction and the world's largest magmatic Ni-Cu-platinum group element sulfide resources (Ni-Cu-PGE), the Norilsk-Talnakh mining camp. The ∼250 ± 2 Ma Siberian Traps at Norilsk contain a classic sequence of basaltic rocks that provide a spatial and stratigraphic context for changing chemistry of the eruptive products. We present a detailed geochemical and Sr-Nd-Hf-Mo isotopic investigation of ST-LIP volcanic rocks and associated sedimentary rocks, including coal and anhydrite, from the Norilsk area. The 98Mo/95Mo isotope ratios (reported as δ98Mo ratio relative to NIST SRM 3134) vary significantly from −0.62 to 0.07 ‰ for the older basalt formations and −0.41 to 0.03 ‰ for the younger basalt formations. The range of δ98Mo and its correlation with the other geochemical tracers cannot be explained by post-magmatic alteration, magmatic differentiation, or sulfide fractionation as Mo behaves as a lithophile element under these magmatic conditions. We suggest that the δ98Mo range can be explained by interaction of the plume with subcontinental lithospheric mantle modified by subduction processes. This is particularly prominent in the earlier Ivakinsky to Gudchikhinsky formations where light δ98Mo values coupled with low Mo/Ce can be explained by contributions from a dehydrated eclogitic component, whereas more rare heavy δ98Mo values and high Mo/Ce likely require contributions from a fluid metasomatized mantle source. Later magmas of the Nadezhdinsky formation show clear evidence of crustal contamination in their combined Mo-Sr-Nd-Hf isotope and trace element systematics, while the later more voluminous Morongovsky type magmas are shallower, large degree melts with limited crustal interaction. 14°N on the Mid-Atlantic ridge (MAR) is one of only a few locations worldwide where volatile-saturated, geochemically enriched mid-ocean ridge basalts (E-MORBs) have been recovered. These basaltic glasses are so gas-rich that CO 2 -filled bubbles may "pop" when brought to the surface, due to the pressure and temperature change. Although these "popping rocks" have long been regarded as representative samples of un-degassed magmas sourced from the upper mantle, uncertainties regarding both their generation mechanism(s) and the potential effects of gas loss/accumulation processes have hampered unambiguous quantification of the upper mantle volatile element (water, carbon, nitrogen, noble gas) inventory. Fortunately, the extent and consequences of gas loss/accumulation processes can be tested by studying characteristic changes in volatile elements compositions, including 4He/40Ar* (where 40Ar* is 40Ar corrected for atmospheric contamination). To document the mechanism of popping rock generation and potential effects of degassing and gas accumulation processes on MORB volatile systematics, we present a comprehensive volatile characterization (carbon, nitrogen and noble gas systematics) of popping rocks and associated MORBs (n = 19) recently sampled at 14°N on the MAR, including 2 normal MORBs (N-MORB) from an oceanic core complex (OCC) and 17 E-MORBs. In line with previous studies, we find that PR exhibit the lowest 4He/40Ar* (1.08 ± 0.04) among all MORB samples, lower than the conventional mantle production ratio of 3 ± 1. Such low 4He/40Ar* could either (i) derive from accumulation of first-generated bubbles originating from open-system degassing of underlying magmas, or (ii) represent the actual upper mantle production ratio. We summarize the arguments in favor of each of these two scenarios (including the required accumulation times for radiogenic noble gases accumulation, the K/U and 232Th/238U of the upper mantle, popping rock vesicle size distributions, and physical considerations for vesicle growth and upwelling through a basaltic magma), and discuss their implications for the volatile composition of un-degassed magmas from the upper mantle. We find homogenous N isotope compositions (average δ15N of −4.49 ± 1.40 ‰ at 14°N) but variable δ13C (from −11 ‰ to −3.4 ‰), potentially compatible with the expectations for residual dissolved gas after Rayleigh fractionation. However, explaining the light δ13C signatures of PR via this process appears incompatible with any of the two scenarios proposed for explaining their low 4He/40Ar*, which would predict (i) 13C-enrichements and (ii) no fractionation relative to an initial composition at δ13C ∼ -5 ‰, respectively. After correction for solubility-controlled degassing fractionation and potential gas accumulation processes using 4He/40Ar* systematics, we find relatively homogeneous C/3He ((2.65 ± 0.51) × 109) but variable C/N (from 125 up to 4578), whose potential origins are discussed as part of a companion paper (Part B: Source effects). The Miocene Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG) of the Pacific Northwest of the United States is the world's youngest and smallest large igneous province. Its earliest formations are the Imnaha, Steens, and now the Picture Gorge Basalt (PGB), and they were sourced from three different dike swarms exposed from SE Washington to Nevada to northcentral Oregon. PGB is often viewed to be distinct from the other formations, as its magmas are sourced from a shallow, relatively depleted, and later subduction-induced metasomatized mantle, along with its young stratigraphic position. It has long been known that the lowermost American Bar flows (AB1&2) of the Imnaha Basalt are chemically similar to those of the PGB, yet the Imnaha Basalt is generally thought to carry the strongest plume source component. These opposing aspects motivated us to revisit the compositional relationships between AB1&2 and PGB. Our findings suggest that tapping a shallow, variably depleted, and metasomatized mantle reservoir to produce earliest CRBG lavas occurred across the province, now pinpointed to ~17 Ma. Moreover, compositional provinciality exists indicating regional differences in degree of depletion and subduction overprint that is preserved by regionally distributed lavas, which in turn implies relatively local lava emplacement at this stage. Arc magmatism plays a key-role in the growth and differentiation of continental crust. In particular, the prolonged magmatic flux events control the genesis of deep crustal hot zones where magma accumulation and fractionation favour the continental arc crust evolution and geochemical stratification. In this view long-lived magmatic systems located in arc domains, with their erupted products spanning from basalts to rhyolites are formidable archive for the understanding the evolution of transcrustal magmatic plumbing systems and the construction of a stratified continental crust. This study focuses on the long-lived (ca. 9 Ma) Miocene-Holocene Cordillera de San Buenaventura volcanic system in the Southern Puna Plateau (NW Argentina), a unique natural laboratory where exploring the building up of MASH-zones (or deep crustal 'hot zones') and related sustained volcanism. Synthesis of new and published data, together with new thermobarometry and fractional crystallization modelling, indicates a cyclic scenario with mantle melts undergoing fractional crystallization dominated incipient and waning stages alternate to major mafic magma recharge events during the building up phase of the MASH-zone. This magmatic scenario is also discussed in the light of the coeval geodynamic framework dominated by the subduction of the Nazca plate and the eastward migration of the frontal arc magmatism. Compositions of arc magmas depend on several factors and are often thought to reflect conditions in the mantle wedge and at the slab-mantle interface. However, in continental arc settings, magmas are also influenced by assimilation of continental crust. Here, we present measurements and modeling of 238U-230Th activity ratios, Sr, Nd, Hf, and Pb isotopic compositions, and major and trace element concentrations in young, historic lavas erupted from Reventador, an active stratovolcano in the Ecuadorian Andes. In arc lavas, 238U-230Th disequilibria are often assumed to reflect processes occurring in the mantle wedge, as U and Th behave differently in this relatively oxidized and fluid-rich environment. Enhanced mobility of hexavalent U in aqueous fluids results in (230Th/238U) < 1 and elevated (238U/232Th), which are common in arc lavas. However, the majority of Reventador lavas have (230Th/238U) = 1.0–1.1 and (238U/232Th) = 0.94–1.12, the latter of which is considerably lower than the depleted mantle ((238U/232Th) ∼ 1.5, Sims and Hart, 2006). While this Th enrichment could be due to melting of subducted oceanic crust, approximately linear trends between (230Th/232Th), wt. % SiO 2 , and radiogenic isotope ratios indicate otherwise. We argue that crustal assimilation lowers long-term, or time-integrated, (238U/232Th) in Reventador magmas. To quantify the effects of assimilation we modeled stepwise assimilation and fractional crystallization. Observed trends between (230Th/232Th), 87Sr/86Sr, ε Nd , ε Hf , and 208Pb/206Pb can be reproduced by up to 10% assimilation, which is consistent with previous regional studies. However, reproducing the full spectrum of isotopic diversity among Reventador lavas requires heterogeneous basalt compositions. In a broader context, this study emphasizes the need to consider crustal processes when examining continental arcs. Apatite can incorporate significant amounts of H2O and CO2, potentially recording volatile abundance and behavior during magma evolution. Here we conducted in situ measurements of CO2 and H2O concentrations in apatite, along with elemental compositions, from two contemporaneous alkaline volcanic suites (Tianbao and Tudiling) in the South Qinling belt in central China to better understand the CO2 and H2O contents and behavior in evolving alkaline melts. Apatite from alkali basalts in Tianbao contains variable CO2 contents ranging from <100 ppm to 2.7 wt.% and H2O contents ranging from 0.1 to 0.6 wt.%. Apatite from REE-enriched trachytes, which evolved from alkali basalt, shows significantly lower CO2 contents and a continuous decrease in H2O during magma fractionation. The observations suggest that CO2 loss commenced at the early stages of magma evolution, whereas significant H2O loss occurred during subsequent magma fractionation in tandem with REE-enrichment. In comparison, apatite grains from the Tudiling trachyte, which is genetically linked with carbonatite, contain higher CO2 contents (0.6 to 1.5 wt.%) but lower REE concentrations than the Tianbao trachytes. Apatite in the Tudiling trachyte is inferred to have crystallized from a carbonated alkaline magma prior to significant CO2 loss and the separation of Tudiling carbonatitic melts, where subsequent liquid immiscibility led to REE enrichment into the carbonatitic melts. The volatile characteristics of apatite from the two volcanic suites provide valuable insights into two different evolutionary processes of alkaline/carbonatitic magmas, the behavior of CO2 and H2O, and the enrichment of REE in alkaline systems. Subduction zones display the most diverse magma compositions from various calc‐alkaline differentiates to alkaline mafic associations, but mechanisms generating Nb‐Enriched Basalts (NEB) and High‐Nb Basalts (HNB) in such settings have received less attention from the researchers. Occurrences of NEB and HNB magmas in the Mesozoic Neotethyan active margin in Iran, known as the Sanandaj‐Sirjan Zone, provide an excellent natural lab for examining this interesting petrologic puzzle. The Middle‐Jurassic typical calc‐alkaline arc plutons exhibit a NW‐SE subduction parallel trend. In the northwestern sector of the zone, the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous magmatic rocks (JCMR) define a chain that transects the Middle‐Jurassic arc trend. The two cross‐cutting magmatic chains are chemically and genetically different. The JCMR include three distinct compositional groups: (i) tholeiites that are depleted in high‐field‐strength elements (HFSE) and show subduction‐related geochemical fingerprints, (ii) NEB with higher abundances of Nb and other HFSE, and (iii) HNB with the highest abundances of Nb and other HFSE. The latter two groups do not display typical arc signatures and are transitional between arc and plume‐type magmas. These three groups of rocks show linear major and trace element, and Sr–Nd isotopic variation trends extending from Mid‐Ocean Ridge Basalts‐like tholeiites to Oceanic Island Basalts‐like HNB. Hence, a two‐component mixing process is suggested for explaining the compositional variation of the JCMR. We propose that a vertical window resulted from slab tear created the geodynamic environment for juxtaposition of magmas originated at different mantle depths and formation of the transitional basalts by magma mixing. Previous studies of Pinatubo have shown that basaltic magma was injected into what was thought to be a homogeneous dacitic magma reservoir just before the 1991 eruptions. Mingling of the basalt and dacite resulted in a volatile-charged hybrid andesitic magma that ascended through the overlying dacite reservoir, triggering initial andesitic eruptions and the climactic eruption of dacite a few days later. Using mineral and whole-rock chemistry and isotopic data, we show that the dacitic magma was not homogeneous, but was instead heterogenous, produced from heterogeneous dacitic magma, which is approximated by at least two distinct silicic end-member magmas. Our data show that these silicic magmas were not produced by fractional crystallization of basaltic magma, such as that which formed the basalt enclaves of the 1991 and Buag period basalts (~ 1.0–0.5 ka). Instead, we argue that the 1991 dacite magmas were produced independently but simultaneously by the melting of heterogeneous crustal materials. Based on these results, we propose the following sequence of events. First, basaltic magma distinct from that of the Buag period underplated and heated the crust to form silicic melt pockets of various compositions in a crustal mush zone. During the period between 0.5 ka and 1991, these silicic melts separated from the crustal mush zone and accumulated in the crust, forming the 1991 dacitic magma reservoir. Finally, during the climactic phase of the 1991 eruption, heterogeneous dacitic pumices were erupted, having a composition range that is representative of their variable crustal origins. To ascertain the Early-to-Middle Jurassic tectonic setting in the central Great Xing'an Range, this study investigated the Early and Middle Jurassic granitoids exposed in the Chaihe area in the central Great Xing'an Range based on isotopic chronology and petrogeochemistry. The results of this study show that the Early and Middle Jurassic granitoids have emplacement ages of 179–172 Ma. Moreover, the Early and Middle Jurassic granitoids are high-K calc-alkaline unfractionated I-type granitoids and high-K calc-alkaline fractionated I-type granitoids, respectively. The magma sources of the Early and Middle Jurassic granitoids both originated from the partial melting of newly accreted lower crustal basaltic rocks. Meanwhile, the Middle Jurassic magma sources were mixed with mantle-derived materials or ocean-floor sediments formed by the dehydration and metasomatism of subducted slabs. The Early and Middle Jurassic granitoids in the study area were formed in the subduction environment of the oceanic crust, in which the Mongol-Okhotsk oceanic plate was subducted southward beneath the Eerguna and Xing'an blocks. The paper presents new data on the formation conditions of basalts from Menshiy Brat postcaldera volcano in the Medvezhia caldera, Iturup Island. The liquidus mineral assemblage consists of olivine (Fo 85.3–90.1 mol %) and chromium spinel (Cr# = 0.46–0.6), which crystallized at 1090–1170°C and oxygen fugacity at NNO + 0.6 (σ = 0.2) to NNO + 0.2 (σ = 0.14) in the course of the eruption. Data on melt inclusions in the liquidus olivine demonstrate that its parental melts were low-Al2O3 and low-K2O, with up to 15.5 wt % MgO, and with an average H2O content of 5.5 wt %. The newly obtained data on volatile contents in the olivine-hosted melt inclusions suggest that the mafic melts were derived by the partial melting of a peridotitic-rich source with a small admixture of an olivine-free component at 1225°C, under active influence of the slab-derived fluids. These fluids were separated from the subducting slab at 670–705°C and depths of 95–105 km beneath Iturup Island. Late Paleozoic pillow basalts are well preserved in the Youjiang Basin of SW China. In this study, we conducted geochemical and Sr−Nd isotopic study on the Late Devonian and Late Carboniferous basalts in Napo area, Youjiang Basin. The analyzed samples comprise moderate SiO2, TiO2, Mg#, and REE contents, with slightly positive or negative Eu anomalies, similar to the chemical nature of OIB (Oceanic island basalt). All basalts show low (143Nd/144Nd)i and (87Sr/86Sr)i values, close to EMI-type (I-type Enriched Mantle) magma source. Late Carboniferous basalts display higher (87Sr/86Sr)i, Nb/Th, and lower εNd(t), Zr/Nb values than those of the Late Devonian basalts, implying progressively decreased enrichment components in the magma source processes. Such evolution trend reflects a continuous lithospheric thinning event, supporting a progressive rifting setting of the Youjiang Basin along the southwestern margin of the Yangtze Block in Late Paleozoic. Combined with regional geological background, the Youjiang Basin is viewed as a continental rift basin related to the opening of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean in Late Devonian and became a passive continental margin basin in Carboniferous. In the past few years, zinc isotope systematics of basaltic magmas have been widely used as novel proxies for terrestrial mantle heterogeneity induced by recycled crustal materials and for planet formation and evolution. The influence of crystal-melt isotope disequilibrium during magma differentiation on the zinc isotopic composition of basaltic melts, nonetheless, has received little attention. In addition, no quantitative constraint has yet been given for the diffusion-driven Zn isotope fractionation between olivine crystals and melts. Here we present high-precision zinc isotope data (δ66Zn JMC-Lyon) for a series of olivine phenocrysts separated from intra-plate alkali basalts from the Jiaodong Peninsula in Eastern China, together with in-situ chemical analysis. Olivine phenocrysts have Zn isotopic compositions which are too light in comparison with the host basaltic melts (Δ66Zn ol-melt = −0.41‰ to −0.10‰; n = 16) to be explained by equilibrium isotope fractionation at magmatic temperatures. Instead, the decrease of δ66Zn values with decreasing Mg# (i.e., Mg/[Mg + Fe2+] × 100) and increasing Zn + Fe2+ contents in olivine phenocrysts suggests diffusion-driven kinetic fractionation during olivine crystallization. The data is well-fitted with a diffusion model in which Zn together with Fe2+ diffuse from surrounding melt into olivine crystals and approximately equal flux of Mg diffuses into melt due to the large chemical gradient, yielding a kinetic Zn isotope fractionation factor β Zn of 0.07. By utilizing the fractional crystallization model under equilibrium or disequilibrium conditions, it is suggested that diffusion-induced isotope disequilibrium during olivine crystallization may drive Zn isotopic composition of the residual melt toward heavier values. When using zinc isotope systematics of any basaltic magma to probe the source heterogeneity, this impact must be taken into account if the Zn isotope disequilibrium widely exists in olivine phenocrysts. Based on the time-related quantitative diffusion model, our results show that the magma residence time for strongly alkali basaltic lavas (∼20 days) is 10–60 times shorter than that for weakly alkali basaltic lavas (6 months to 4 years). This supports the generation of weakly alkali basalts via interaction between silica-undersaturated melts and the surrounding lithospheric mantle, implying a probable common mechanism in intra-plate basalts that could be comparable globally. Thus, Zn isotope disequilibrium between olivine crystals and melts could provide valuable information on the evolution history of intra-plate basaltic magmas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dating from the lunar magma ocean solidification period, the Procellarum KREEP Terrane (PKT) occupies 16% of the surface but has a much higher thorium abundance compared to the rest of the Moon and is thus interpreted to carry 40% of the radioactive elements by volume in the form of an anomalously thick KREEP-rich layer. Subsequent research has focused on the processes responsible for PKT concentration and localization (e.g., degree-1 convection, farside impact basin effects, etc.), and the effect of PKT high-radioactivity localization on lunar thermal evolution (e.g., topography relaxation, mantle heating, late-stage mare basalt generation, etc.). Here we use a stratigraphic approach and new crustal thickness data to probe the nature of the PKT with depth. We find that most PKT characteristics can be explained by sequential impact cratering events that excavated and redistributed to the surface/near-surface a much thinner Th-rich KREEP layer at depth, implying that no anomalous conditions of PKT thickness, radioactive abundances, geodynamics, thermal effects or magma generation are likely to be required as in the previous studies. Fractional crystallization of Fe–Ti oxides can induce detectable Mg isotopic changes during late-stage basalt differentiation. Because chromite and olivine are early crystallizing phases during basaltic melt differentiation, the effect of chromite crystallization on the fractionation of Mg isotopes during early-stage basalt differentiation is still poorly understood. Here, we examine the possibility of chromite induced Mg isotope fractionation with a Mg isotopic study of chromite–olivine pairs in dunites and chromitites collected from major types of basaltic intrusive rock suites formed by fractional crystallization in different tectonic settings. The chromite δ26Mg (= [(26Mg/24Mg)sample / (26Mg/24Mg)DSM3–1] × 1000) values range from −0.19‰ to 0.30‰ in the Luobusa ophiolite, −0.09‰ to 0.78‰ in the Kızıldağ ophiolite, −0.04 to 0.42‰ in the Gaositai Alaskan-type complex, similar to those previously reported from the Stillwater layered intrusion (−0.05 to 0.84‰; Bai et al., 2021). They are significantly higher than those of coexisting olivine (δ26Mg = −0.48 to −0.10‰). The Δ26MgChr-Ol (= δ26MgChr − δ26MgOl) values in the rock suites investigated here fall largely between equilibrium fractionation lines of spinel–olivine pairs and magnesioferrite–olivine pairs, indicating equilibrium Mg isotopic fractionation. Furthermore, the Δ26MgChr-Ol values increase with decreasing Cr content of chromite in the dunites and chromitites, showing that high 26Mg has a greater affinity to Al-rich chromite than Cr-rich chromite. Fractional crystallization of such isotopically high chromite is expected to progressively lower the Mg isotope values of the in the remaining magma. Furthermore, continental basaltic magmas typically experience early crystallization of olivine and Al-rich chromite. Their δ26Mg values correlate positively with MgO (FeO, Cr,) and CaO/Al2O3 ratios and negatively with total alkali contents (Na2O + K2O). This indicates that detectable Mg isotopic fractionation occurred in intra-continental basalt magmas, probably by fractional crystallization of olivine and chromite. The observed low-δ26Mg intra-continental basalts can be accurately modeled by olivine + chromite fractionation with fractionation factors (Δ26MgChr-Melt) of 0.20‰, 0.60‰, and 1.18‰ as observed in the chromitites investigated during this study. Therefore, the early-stage basaltic melt differentiation involving separation of olivine and chromite may induce resolvable Mg isotopic fractionation, and the δ26Mg values of continental basalts should be used with caution in petrogenetic studies. The precise ages of Cenozoic basaltic rocks from 20 localities (24 samples) in south-western Poland were studied by means of the 40Ar/39Ar isotope method. Three phases of volcanic activity were identified in this area. The older, Ruphelian phase took place 31–29 Ma ago and the younger, Aquitanian phase occurred 22–21 Ma ago. Significantly younger ages (4.8–4.6 Ma: Zanclean phase) were obtained for the basalts cropping out in the vicinity of Lądek Zdrój only. Most of the analyzed basalts from the Ruphelian phase are classified as nephelinites. They occur in the area of Lausitz Masif, south of Sudetic Marginal Fault and in the Opole Depression. The volcanic rocks from the Aquitanian phase crop out in the wide area north of the Sudetic Marginal Fault. They are composed of alkali basalts. The youngest phase is represented by the basanites only. The deep discontinuous tectonic structures intersecting the areas of volcanic activity in SW Poland, parallel or oblique to the tectonic stress directions previously reconstructed for the Oligocene and Miocene in the Bohemian Massif, were most probably reactivated by an extension approximately parallel or slightly oblique to them, thus opening pathways for the migration of basaltic magma in the Sudetes and their foreland. The Late Aptian Rajmahal Traps originated through Kerguelen-Plume-related volcanism at the eastern margin of the Indian Shield. Clinopyroxene and whole-rock thermobarometry reveals that the Rajmahal magmas crystallized at P-T conditions of ≤~5 kbar/~1100–1200 °C. These pressures correspond to upper crustal depths (≤~19 km). Modeling shows that the Rajmahal primary magmas were last in equilibrium with mantle at P-T conditions of ~9 kbar/~1280 °C. The corresponding depths (~33 km) are consistent with gravity data that indicate a high-density layer at lower crustal depths below an upwarped Moho. Thus, the high-density layer probably represents anomalous mantle. It is likely that the mantle-derived magmas accumulated below the upwarped Moho and were subsequently transported via trans-crustal faults/fractures to the upper crust where they evolved by fractional crystallization in small staging chambers before eruption. In the lower part of the Rajmahal plumbing system, buoyant melts from the Kerguelen Plume may have moved laterally and upward along the base of the lithosphere to accumulate and erode the eastern Indian lithospheric root. Columbia River province magmatism is now known to include abundant and widespread rhyolite centers even though the view that the earliest rhyolites erupted from the McDermitt Caldera and other nearby volcanic fields along the Oregon–Nevada state border has persisted. Our study covers little-studied or unknown rhyolite occurrences in eastern Oregon that show a much wider distribution of older centers. With our new data on distribution of rhyolite centers and ages along with literature data, we consider rhyolites spanning from 17.5 to 14.5 Ma of eastern Oregon, northern Nevada, and western Idaho to be a direct response to flood basalts of the Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG) and collectively categorize them as Columbia River Rhyolites. The age distribution patterns of Columbia River Rhyolites have implications for the arrival, location, and dispersion of flood basalt magmas in the crust. We consider the period from 17.5 to 16.4 Ma to be the waxing phase of rhyolite activity and the period from 15.3 to 14.5 Ma to be the waning phase. The largest number of centers was active between 16.3–15.4 Ma. The existence of crustal CRBG magma reservoirs beneath rhyolites seems inevitable, and hence, rhyolites suggest the following. The locations of centers of the waxing phase imply the arrival of CRBG magmas across the distribution area of rhyolites and are thought to correspond to the thermal pulses of arriving Picture Gorge Basalt and Picture-Gorge-Basalt-like magmas of the Imnaha Basalt in the north and to those of Steens Basalt magmas in the south. The earlier main rhyolite activity phase corresponds with Grande Ronde Basalt and evolved Picture Gorge Basalt and Steens Basalt. The later main phase rhyolite activity slightly postdated these basalts but is contemporaneous with icelanditic magmas that evolved from flood basalts. Similarly, centers of the waning phase span the area distribution of earlier phases and are similarly contemporaneous with icelanditic magmas and with other local basalts. These data have a number of implications for long-held notions about flood basalt migration through time and the age-progressive Snake River Plain Yellowstone rhyolite trend. There is no age progression in rhyolite activity from south-to-north, and this places doubt on the postulated south-to-north progression in basalt activity, at least for main-phase CRBG lavas. Furthermore, we suggest that age-progressive rhyolite activity of the Snake River Plain–Yellowstone trend starts at ~12 Ma with activity at the Bruneau Jarbidge center, and early centers along the Oregon–Nevada border, such as McDermitt, belong to the early to main phase rhyolites identified here. The study of Re–Os isotopic systematics of the Mesozoic magmas in East Antarctica and its comparison with Sr–Nd–Pb–Os published data allowed us to reveal the main features of Antarctic magmatism associated with the activity of the Karoo–Maud (Dronning Maud Land (DML), Karoo and Ferrar provinces) and the Kerguelen (Lambert rift area) plumes. It is shown that a melt source of the 180-Ma Karoo–Maud plume could be enriched lithospheric mantle. Variations of the 187Os/188Os ratio in the range of 0.1242–0.1426 characterize almost all types of melts in the Karoo and DML provinces, including both high- and low-Ti magmas as well as high-Mg ferropicrites produced by melting of mantle pyroxenite. This observation is consistent with previous assumption that magmas derived from pyroxenite mantle at the initial stage of plume impact represented melts of deep lithospheric fragments of ancient Gondwana paleocontinent that were entrapped by plume. Thereby, mantle heterogeneity recorded in the Nd–Pb–Sr isotopic compositions of the basalts is not expressed in the systematic variations of Re–Os isotope system. The magmatic source of the basalts of the Ferrar province differs from the source of Mesozoic magmatism in the Karoo and DML provinces by great variations in the 187Os/188Os ratio: from 0.1 to 0.31, and by the lower osmium contents, with limited variations of other isotopic systems, indicating an admixture of enriched EM-II source. This is consistent with inferred subduction reworking of the mantle of the western Antarctic margin (Sushchevskaya et al., 2022). Ultramafic picritic magmas from the Lambert Glacier area are characterized by a radiogenic osmium isotopic composition: 187Os/188Os 0.1582–0.2388. Source of these magmas could be ancient depleted mantle, which later experienced mantle metasomatism due to the multiple interactions with fluid-saturated melts. Picritic melts of the paleorift zone of the Lambert Glacier are close to a magma source of the Karoo and DML provinces in terms of Sr-Nd isotopic composition, but differ in more radiogenic lead. Zoned plutons, composed of dunites, pyroxenites, and gabbroic rocks, have been referred to as the Ural-Alaskan type complexes (UA-complexes) and occur in numerous paleo-arc settings worldwide. Many of these complexes are source rocks for economic placers of platinum-group metals. Thus, it is important to understand how UA-complexes form and the origin and behavior of platinum-group elements (PGEs). It is widely assumed that the UA-complexes result from differentiation of supra-subduction high-Ca high-Mg sub-alkaline magmas. However, there is a lack of direct evidence for the existence and differentiation of such magmas, mainly because cases of UA-complexes being spatially and temporally linked to co-genetic volcanics are unknown. We studied an UA-complex from the Tumrok range (Eastern Kamchatka) where a dunite-clinopyroxenite-gabbro assemblage is spatially and temporary related to high-Ca volcanics (i.e., picrites and basalts). Based on the mineral and chemical composition of the rocks, mineral chemistry, and composition of melt inclusions hosted within rock-forming minerals, we conclude that the intrusive assemblage and the volcanics are co-genetic and share the same parental magma of ankaramitic composition. Furthermore, the compositions of the plutonic rocks are typical of UA-complexes worldwide. Finally, the rocks studied exhibit a full differentiation sequence from olivine-only liquidus in picrites and dunites to eutectic crystallization of diopside or hornblende, plagioclase, and K-Na feldspar in plagio-wehrlites and gabbroic rocks. This study is concerned with the structure and composition of a sheet of Cenozoic alkaline basaltoids (basanites and trachybasalts) in the upper reaches of the Kedon River, in the Kedon Uplift of the Omolon Massif. Mineralogical and geochemical data provide evidence of an intraplate, poorly differentiated type of magmas. Geochronologic isotope data (40Ar/39Ar and K-Ar methods) indicate a Late Miocene age for the eruptions in the time span between 9 and 7 ± 1 Ma. The magma source contained a considerable percentage of pyroxenites and, judging from the isotopic composition of Sr, Nd, and Pb volcanics, it is similar to the PREMA mantle component that is also characteristic for other Cenozoic alkaline basalt occurrences in Northeast Asia. The potential temperature of the mantle beneath the volcanic area is similar, judging from theoretical calculations, to the mean value of an unexcited mantle, and is consistent with the scenario of lithospheric extension initiated by remote tectonic events. Volcanic rocks of the Java sector of Sunda arc have a wide range of isotopic compositions that indicate significant addition of subjected sediment. What processes control these geochemical characteristics is a topic of long-standing debate. Here we report Sr–Nd–Pb radiogenic isotope ratios and geochemical data from stratigraphically well-constrained rocks of Sundoro volcano in central Java that represent the volcano's activity since 34 ka. The rocks range from basalt (51 wt % SiO2) to andesite (63 wt % SiO2) and are dominated by basaltic andesite. We divide them into magma types A, B and C, having low, medium and high 87Sr/86Sr and Pb isotopic ratios, respectively. According to various differentiation indices, the three magma types have separate, parallel 87Sr/86Sr, Ba/Zr and La/Yb trends and disparate Pb isotopic trends. The dominant process of intracrustal differentiation appears to be magma mixing, in which each of the three magma types represents the mixing of a distinct mafic end-member and a distinct felsic end-member. The distinct geochemical profiles of these magma types indicate that the three mafic end-members are genetically unrelated and that their differences may represent characteristics of their magma sources. On the basis of trace element ratios (Ba/Yb and La/Yb) and Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic compositions, we estimate that magma types A, B and C represent mantle wedge materials fluxed by ~1%, ~1.5% and ~2% slab-derived materials containing 50%, 55% and 65% sediment component, respectively, reflecting increasing proportions of sediments and increasing slab flux. Geochemical data from Merapi volcano, interpreted using the same approach, reveal a similar increase in the slab-derived flux to the magma source, raising the possibility that such short-lived variations in magma genesis, perhaps related to the subduction of bathymetric relief features, characterize the unusual magmatism beneath the volcanic front of the central Java sector of the Sunda arc. The unusually prolonged volcanism at the Chang'e‐5 (CE‐5) landing site remains a mystery. To constrain the geochemical features of the CE‐5 mantle source, we performed in situ sulfur isotope analysis on sulfides of the CE‐5 basalts. The modal abundance of sulfides is ∼0.1 wt%, dominated by troilite with trace cubanite, chalcopyrite and pentlandite, yielding a S‐abundance of ∼360 ± 180 ppm for the bulk CE‐5 basalts. Our analysis shows a decreasing trend of δ34S in the magma with crystallization and degassing, suggesting ∼40% degassing loss of S, and accordingly the maximum S‐abundance in CE‐5 primitive magma was calibrated to approximately 600 ± 300 ppm. Considering an extensive fractional crystallization following a low‐degree partial melting of the CE‐5 basalts, the estimated sulfur abundance in the mantle source is ∼1–10 ppm. This result suggests a strong depletion of volatiles in the CE‐5 mantle source, which may be caused by prolonged magmatic activity. Sulfur, with four stable isotopes (32S, 33S, 34S, and 36S) and an active component in magmatic activity, can constrain the magmatic processes and geochemical features of the mantle source. Here, we report the S isotope compositions of troilite in the CE‐5 samples. The sulfides are mainly troilite, with trace Cu‐ and Ni‐sulfides. We counted the modal abundance of sulfides and then obtained the S abundance of the bulk CE‐5 basalts. Analysis indicates that S isotope fractionation exists in the CE‐5 troilite and is mainly due to magma degassing. According to the variation in S isotope compositions, we corrected for the degassing loss of S and obtain the S abundance of the CE‐5 magma before eruption. Furthermore, we estimated the S abundance of the CE‐5 basalt source based on the formation of the CE‐5 magma. This estimated value is significantly lower than the estimations for Apollo basalt sources, implying multiple extractions of sulfur‐bearing melts from the CE‐5 mantle source due to its prolonged magmatic activity. Mineral/melt partition coefficients have been widely used to provide insights into magmatic processes. Olivine is one of the most abundant and important minerals in the lunar mantle and mare basalts. Yet, no systematic olivine/melt partitioning data are available for lunar conditions. We report trace element partition data between host mineral olivine and its melt inclusions in lunar basalts. Equilibrium is evaluated using the Fe-Mg exchange coefficient, leading to the choice of melt inclusion-host olivine pairs in lunar basalts 12040, 12009, 15016, 15647, and 74235. Partition coefficients of 21 elements (Li, Mg, Al, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Y, Zr, Nb, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) were measured. Except for Li, V, and Cr, these elements show no significant difference in olivine-melt partitioning compared to the data for terrestrial samples. The partition coefficient of Li between olivine and melt in some lunar basalts with low Mg# (Mg# < 0.75 in olivine, or < ~0.5 in melt) is higher than published data for terrestrial samples, which is attributed to the dependence of DLi on Mg# and the lack of literature DLi data with low Mg#. The partition coefficient of V in lunar basalts is measured to be 0.17 to 0.74, significantly higher than that in terrestrial basalts (0.003 to 0.21), which can be explained by the lower oxygen fugacity in lunar basalts. The significantly higher DV can explain why V is less enriched in evolved lunar basalts than terrestrial basalts. The partition coefficient of Cr between olivine and basalt melt in the Moon is 0.11 to 0.62, which is lower than those in terrestrial settings by a factor of ~2. This is surprising because previous authors showed that Cr partition coefficient is independent of fO2. A quasi-thermodynamically based model is developed to correlate Cr partition coefficient to olivine and melt composition and fO2. The lower Cr partition coefficient between olivine and basalt in the Moon can lead to more Cr enrichment in the lunar magma ocean, as well as more Cr enrichment in mantle-derived basalts in the Moon. Hence, even though Cr is typically a compatible element in terrestrial basalts, it is moderately incompatible in primitive lunar basalts, with a similar degree of incompatibility as V based on partition coefficients in this work, as also evidenced by the relatively constant V/Cr ratio of 0.039 ± 0.011 in lunar basalts. The confirmation of constant V/Cr ratio is important for constraining concentrations of Cr (slightly volatile and siderophile) and V (slightly siderophile) in the bulk silicate Moon. The microgranular enclaves (MEs) and their host granitoids contain vital information on the genesis and evolution of the magma, especially for those which have close relationship with mineralization, yet remains a hot debate on their origin. Here, we investigate the MEs and their host granitoids in the Shuangjianzishan (SJZ) deposits, southern Great Hinggan Range, NE China, using ziron U–Pb dating and Hf isotopes, along with a systematic analysis of whole‐rock geochemical and Sr‐Nd isotopic compositions. The SJZ MEs mainly consist of monzonites and quartz monzonites, and the SJZ granitoids comprise a suite of fine‐grained syenogranites and coarse‐grained monzogranites. The zircon U–Pb dating results suggest that the SJZ granitoids and the SJZ MEs were emplaced at approximately 143–141 Ma. Geochemical features and isotopic compositions of the SJZ granitoids indicate that they are mainly generated by partial melting of juvenile lower‐crustal basaltic rocks. The fine‐grained syenogranites and the coarse‐grained monzogranites have a gradual contact relationship, similar crystallization age, Sr‐, Nd‐, and Hf‐isotopic compositions, suggesting that they were derived from a similar silicic magma reservoir. According to the geochemical compositions and petrographic characteristics (aggregates of coarse‐grained euhedral plagioclase crystals) of the SJZ granitoids, we infer that the monzogranites (SiO2 = 69.24–74.95 wt%) are regarded as the residual cumulate and the fine‐grained syenogranites (SiO2 = 74.83–77.97 wt%) are high silica melts segregated from a crystal mush. The SJZ MEs are characterised by low SiO2 (50.03–64.20 wt%) and MgO (1.08–2.63 wt%) contents, high P2O5 contents and contain acicular apatite, which are consistent with the products of intermediate magma. Combining with the MEs have comparable crystallization age, mineral assemblage, whole‐rock Sr‐Nd and zircon Hf‐isotopic compositions with their host granitoids, implying the MEs were autoliths related to their host monzogranites. Collectively, we infer that the SJZ MEs were generated by the rapid cooling and crystallization of the hot ascending intermediate magmas contacted with the cooler wall rocks, then those sub‐solid fine‐grained crystal‐rich margins were fragmented and injected into the progressive evolved mush chamber, leading to the extraction and upward percolation of high silicic melts from the compacting crystal‐rich mush in the shallow crust. Numerous studies have argued that the andesitic model (i.e., the arc directly produces andesitic magmas) rather than the basaltic-input model (i.e., andesitic magmas were derived by fractionation from basaltic magmas) better explains the composition of continental crust. However, it remains controversial as to how andesitic magmas are directly produced in subduction zones, and this weakens the basis of the andesitic model. Recently, the mélange-diapir model has been increasingly considered to be an important mechanism for the direct generation of arc andesites, and would thus support the andesitic model for crustal growth. Moreover, melting experiments on mélange rocks show that varying the composition of mélange rocks (e.g., serpentinite-dominated and sediment-dominated mélange) can produce a range of primary andesitic arc magmas, from tholeiitic, calc-alkaline, to high-K calc-alkaline and shoshonitic magma types. However, it remains challenging to determine the different mélange sources for low-K to high-K arc andesites. Here we verify these experimental results using data from early Cretaceous dioritic porphyries in the southern Qiangtang block of central Tibetan plateau. The generation of these dioritic rocks cannot be linked to any coeval basaltic rocks in this region and so they may represent primary andesitic magmas. These dioritic porphyries are divided into low-K type-1 and high-K type-2. Type-1 has higher δ26Mg values (−0.16 to −0.08‰) than MORBs (mid-ocean ridge basalt, δ26Mg = −0.25 ± 0.06‰), which can be ascribed to the contribution of subducted bulk/un-differentiated serpentinite in their source. Combined with their low K contents and La/Sm ratios, and high Nd Hf isotope ratios (εNd(t) = 3.36–5.03; εHf(t) = 12.88–13.76), we suggest a serpentine-dominated mélange for their origin. The type-2 and type-1 rocks have similar trace-element distribution patterns, the same ages (∼124 Ma), and are indistinguishable in field outcrops, indicating their common petrogenesis. However, compared to type-1, type-2 has higher K and Th contents, and La/Sm and Th/Nd ratios with lower Nd Hf isotope values (εNd(t) = −1.61 to +0.30; εHf(t) = 3.78–4.39), and mantle-like δ26Mg values (−0.28 to −0.17‰). This likely indicates derivation from a sediment-dominated mélange for type-2. Previous isotope studies of lunar samples have demonstrated that volatile loss was an important part of the early history of the Moon. The radiogenic U-Pb system, where Pb has a significantly lower T 50% condensation temperature than U, has the capacity to both recognize and calibrate the extent of volatile loss but this approach has been hindered by terrestrial Pb contamination of samples. We employ a novel method that integrates analyses of individual samples by Ion Microprobe and Thermal Ionization mass spectrometry to correct for ubiquitous common Pb contamination, a method that results in significantly higher estimates for µ-values (238U/204Pb) than previously reported. Using this method, six of seven samples of low-Ti basaltic meteorites return µ-values between 1900 and 9600, values that are consistent with a re-evaluation of published results that return µ-values of 510–2900 for both low- and high-Ti basalts. While some degree of fractionation during partial melting may increase µ-values, we infer that the source region(s) for the basalts must also have had elevated µ-values by the time the lunar magma ocean solidified. Models to account for the available initial Pb isotopic compositions of lunar basalts in light of timing constraints from thermal modelling imply that their source regions had a µ-value of at least 280, consistent with the elevated µ-values of lunar basalts and that inferred for their sources. Such high µ-values are attributed to the preferential loss of more than 99% of the Pb over U relative to a precursor with a Mars-like composition in the aftermath of the giant impact. Such an extensive loss of Pb is consistent with previously reported losses of other elements with comparable volatility, namely Zn, Rb, Ga and CrO 2. Finally, our modelling of highly-radiogenic lunar Pb isotopes assuming crystallization of the lunar magma ocean over 10′s of millions of years shows that the elevated µ-values allows for, but does not require, a young Moon formation age. The Heyuan Fault, is one of the main NE‐trending faults in the southernmost South China Block and is close to the northernmost South China Sea to the south. The fault features multi‐stage deformation and controlled the formation of late Cretaceous to Cenozoic basins. Based on detailed field investigations and comprehensive geochronological research, including zircon U‐Pb, Rb‐Sr isochron, zircon U‐Th‐He dating, two episodic tectono‐thermal events are recognized. The first occurred during ∼79 Ma to 66 Ma, which is characterized by large‐scale quartz‐fluid emplacement. The other occurred at ∼34 Ma, which features the eruption of a set of basalts. The two events show a changing on material source from siliceous hydrotherm to basalt magma, supporting obvious lithospheric thinning of the southernmost South China Block, which shed light on the geological evolution and the interaction mechanisms between the SCB and the northern South China Sea since the Late Cretaceous. This paper is concerned with new petrological-geochemical, and isotope-geochronological data for the igneous rocks that compose the Khulam volcano-plutonic complex in the central part of the North Caucasus (Kabardino-Balkaria). It is shown that the moderately-alkaline rocks of the Khulam complex are represented by a bimodal association of gabbro + basaltic trachyandesites and trachytes and rhyolites. The fractional crystallization had a leading role in the formation of this bimodal association. Assimilation of the material of host crustal rocks by magmatic melts did not exert any appreciable influence. According to the results of U‒Pb and K‒Ar dating, the Khulam rocks were formed in the Middle Jurassic (Bajocian–Callovian, 167 ± 4 Ma ago). It was found that the Khulam rocks possess geochemical characteristics that are similar to those for intraplate continental rocks, and were erupted in a postcollisional geotectonic setting (when the subduction in the region came to an end) in a local extensional zone that arose in the rear of a former active continental margin. The magma melts that were generated by the mantle source of the Khulam complex had overall geochemical characteristics proper to enriched mid-oceanic ridge basalts (E-MORB). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The specific duration between the impact event and subsequent volcanic flows is highly variable based on previous works. The method of crater size-frequency distribution (CSFD) has been previously used to date the basalt in Orientale Basin, which yielded inconsistent resultant Absolute Model Age (AMA) ranges. The inconsistency may be attributed to the choice of counting area and identified superposed craters. In this study, we integrated the Chang'E-2 (CE-2) imaging data (7 m/pix) and the IIM and 20 m CE-2 DTMS data, re-divided Mare Orientale, and re-estimated the age of the basalts there. The ages revealed that (1) the central basalts had multiphase eruptions, beginning at 3.77 Ga (30 My after the impact event) with the longest duration of 1.51 Gy; (2) the edge basalts have a similar features as the central basalts, beginning at 3.75–3.50 Ga (50–300 My after the impact) with the longest duration of 0.67 Gy. Compared with the basalts along the basinal margin, the central basalts have higher Ti but lower Mg# contents, consistent with the basaltic magma fractionation trend. Spatial distribution characteristics indicate that the basalt eruption occurred in the impact direction upstream and in the center, but almost absent in the impact direction downstream. Accordingly, we speculate that the longevity of the lunar mare basaltic volcanism was affected by gravity changes, material balance, and other post-impact processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent studies investigating magmatic volatile contents indicate widespread enrichment of carbon, sulfur, and halogens in ocean island basalts (OIBs). At El Hierro in the Western Canary Islands, magmas with exceptionally high CO2 and S contents have been erupting throughout the Holocene. High S content of up to 5200 ppm requires an oxidised mantle source, but estimates of initial magmatic oxygen fugacity (f O2) are sparse. Here, we present estimates of f O2 and magmatic temperature for El Hierro together with a global mantle potential temperature dataset to evaluate redox and temperature conditions in the early stages of melt evolution for volatile-rich OIBs. Oxygen fugacities calculated using vanadium partitioning between melt inclusions (MIs) and their olivine hosts are >FMQ + 2.9 (2.9 log10 units above the fayalite-magnetite-quartz buffer), indicating that El Hierro magmas are highly oxidised. MI and matrix glass sulfur speciation data record f O2 between FMQ-1 to FMQ + 2; these values strongly depend on the position of the S2− to S6+ transition relative to the FMQ buffer. Nonetheless, glass sulfur speciation data record lower oxygen fugacity than V partitioning data, indicating MIs were able to maintain Fe3+/ΣFe and S6+/ΣS equilibrium with the surrounding melt during their evolution. The high f O2 of El Hierro magmas is coupled with an average mantle potential temperature estimate of 1443 ± 66°C (1σ, n  = 17) for the broader Canary Islands, which is slightly higher than the average potential temperature estimated for adjacent mid-ocean ridge segments (1427 ± 33°C, 1σ, n  = 474), albeit the two values are well within error. We find that ~98% of Canary Island rock compositions are not suitable for calculation of mantle potential temperatures using currently available methods. This is caused by the presence of substantial pyroxenite and volatile-enriched peridotite mantle domains under the Canary Islands. A wider compositional calibration of various petrological models is necessary to precisely determine mantle potential temperatures for volatile-rich alkali basalts. This study reports electron probe micro-analysis of relict clinopyroxenes in Neoarchean Kotima basalt of the Dongargarh Supergroup, Central India and their petrogenetic significance. Kotima clinopyroxenes plot in the field of augite and show an overall limited sub-alkaline fractionation trend. Inter-elemental variation diagrams reveal an overall magmatic trend and preservation of magmatic chemistry, whereas their euhedral to subhedral form indicates near equilibrium conditions of crystallisation. Besides wollastonite, enstatite and ferrosilite major components, 'other components' comprises Ca–Al tschermak, esseneite, CaTiAl2O6 (Tp), kosmochlor, aegirine, jadeite and johannsenite. Single clinopyroxene geothermobarometers indicate magmatic temperatures (1180–1050°C) and shallow depths (2–3 kb pressure) of crystallisation of Kotima clinopyroxenes. The clinopyroxene chemistry and chondrite-normalised whole-rock rare-earth element plots imply the derivation of Kotima basalt from a relatively primitive parent magma, in which pH2O and fO2 decreased with fractionation, a hallmark of arc-related volcanics. The overall low-Ti (and Al) contents of the Kotima clinopyroxenes imply their formation from a subduction-related sub-alkaline magma, whereas discriminant plots of Si vs. Al, Na vs. Ti, Al vs. Ti and Ti vs. Alz reveal their formation in a mixed rifting (non-orogenic) continental arc tectonic setting in response to ridge subduction. The Mesozoic‐age Andaman Island Ophiolite located in the southeastern fringe of the Indian plate margin is one of the well‐preserved supra‐subduction‐zone oceanic lithospheric slices. It is tectonically associated with the Indonesian arc system and is an extension of the Phanerozoic Indonesian‐Myanmar orogenic belt. Thus, it offers a unique opportunity to study oceanic crust formation and specify magma evolution processes in the Tethyan subduction system. The volcanics of the Andaman Islands ophiolite display a wide compositional variation. Rock types vary from basic (basalts) to intermediate (basaltic‐trachyandesites, basaltic andesites) to acidic differentiates like dacites and rhyolites. This contribution presents the petrochemistry of the intermediate rock types—basaltic‐trachyandesites, trachyandesites and acidic—dacites and rhyodacites of Andaman Island Ophiolite (India). This study examines the role of fractional crystallization and partial melting in the generation of intermediate and acidic magmas of the Andaman Ophiolite suite. Plagioclases and pyroxenes are the major mineral constituents of these rocks on petrographic observation. Plagioclases of the intermediate rocks are of albite composition Ab98‐99. The acidic rocks show compositional variation from albite to oligoclase (Ab83–99). Analysed pyroxenes of intermediate and acidic rocks are augite (Wo46–49En34–41Fs13–17). The studied calc‐alkaline rocks show variable abundance of Large‐Ion Lithophile Elements and display strong positive Pb and negative Ti anomalies. The chondrite‐normalized Rare Earth Elements display an enriched pattern with varying degrees of enrichment. Clinopyroxene thermobarometry reveals that the intermediate magma and acidic magma becomes saturated with clinopyroxene at 1,062–1,133°C and 1,016–1,079°C, respectively, at 2 kbar and H2O = 2 wt%. Petrochemical findings and model calculations using PELE are consistent with a derivation of intermediate rocks from the basaltic melt by fractional crystallization. In contrast, acidic rocks are the product of partial melting of hydrothermally altered oceanic crust. It has been suggested that the carbonated mantle reflected by Mg−Zn isotopic anomalies of Cenozoic intraplate basalts from East Asia coincides with the stagnant West Pacific slab in the mantle transition zone. However, the northern boundary of such carbonated domain beneath East Asia is uncertain. Late Mesozoic-Cenozoic intraplate basalts are widespread in far eastern Russia and thus provide an opportunity to examine this issue. Here we report major-trace element contents and Sr−Nd-−Mg−Zn isotopic compositions for 9 Late Mesozoic-Cenozoic basaltic samples from the Khanka Block and Sikhote-Alin accretionary complex. They are characterized by large variations in SiO2 contents (41 wt.% to 50 wt.%) and CaO/Al2O3 (0.50 to 0.97), enrichments of large-ion lithophile elements (LILE), positive Nb−Ta anomalies and strongly negative K, Pb, Zr, Hf, Ti, Y anomalies in primitive mantle-normalized trace element spider diagram. Furthermore, the rocks show good correlations of Ti/Ti* with Hf/Hf*, La/Yb, Fe/Mn and trace element contents (e. g., Nb). In addition, they have lighter Mg and heavier Zn isotope compositions than the BSE estimates, coupled with depleted Sr−Nd isotope compositions. These elemental and isotopic characteristics cannot be explained by alteration, magma differentiation or diffusion, but are consistent with the partial melting of carbonated peridotite. By and large, the Late Mesozoic-Cenozoic basalts from far eastern Russia bear very similar geochemical characteristics as those Na-series Cenozoic basalts from eastern China. The extended region of Mg−Zn isotopic anomalies is roughly coincident with the stagnant West Pacific slab beneath East Asia, and all of these alkali basalts can be generated from mantle sources hybridized by recycled Mg-carbonates from the Pacific slab stagnant in the mantle transition zone. We infer that (1) the carbonated big mantle wedge extends to the NE edge of the West Pacific slab and may have also appeared in the Late Mesozoic due to the effect of the Paleo-Pacific slab beneath this region, and (2) decarbonation of stagnant slabs in the mantle transition zone is a key mechanism for carbon outgassing from deep mantle to surface via intraplate alkali melts. A zircon with an age of ~2.9 Ga, much older than all existing dates, has been discovered for the first time in basalts of the Afanasy Nikitin Rise. Such an ancient age is typical of continental crust rocks of Western Hindustan or Antarctica. Analyses have revealed the geochemical similarity of magmas of the Conrad and Afanasy Nikitin rises and their difference from Crozet Rise magmas owing to their different formation conditions. Emplacement of the Conrad and Afanasy Nikitin rises occurred ~80–90 Ma ago under the influence of the same Conrad hotspot near the spreading Indian–Antarctic Ridge. This hotspot is a satellite of the giant Kerguelen Plume, active in the Eastern Indian Ocean from 130 Ma ago to the present. The plume formed the Ninetyeast Ridge in the ancient spreading center, and plume magmas leaked along the spreading zone up to the formation area of the Conrad and Afanasy Nikitin rises. During interaction of the Kerguelen Plume with the spreading zone and transform faults, nonspreading blocks of the ancient continental lithosphere of the Gondwana may have been preserved. Melt Fe3+/FeT ratios are widely used as a proxy for the oxygen fugacity (fO2) in magma systems. A particular challenge is a difficulty in quantifying the Fe2+ and Fe3+ contents, which are not easily measurable by conventional techniques. Using the Mn–Fe2+ exchange coefficient (KD) between olivine (ol) and melt (m), this study develops a novel approach to this problem using the relationship of Fem3+ ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{\mathrm{m}}^{3+}$/FemT ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{\mathrm{m}}^{\mathrm{T}}$ = 1 − KDol/mMn−Fe2+ ${\mathrm{KD}}_{\mathrm{ol}/\mathrm{m}}^{\mathrm{Mn}-{\mathrm{Fe}}^{2+}}$ * (FeolT ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{\mathrm{ol}}^{\mathrm{T}}$/Mnol)/(FemT ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{\mathrm{m}}^{\mathrm{T}}$/Mnm). The key for applying this equation is to combine well‐defined KDol/mMn−Fe2+ ${\text{KD}}_{\mathrm{ol}/\mathrm{m}}^{\mathrm{Mn}-{\mathrm{Fe}}^{2+}}$ with accurate Mn and FeT analyses of olivine and coexisting melt. The Mn and FeT analyses are readily measured by electron microprobe. To define KDol/mMn−Fe2+ ${\text{KD}}_{\mathrm{ol}/\mathrm{m}}^{\mathrm{Mn}-{\mathrm{Fe}}^{2+}}$, we performed experiments at 1.0–1.75 GPa and 1250–1450°C under graphite‐buffered conditions, where FeT can be used as Fe2+ to calculate KDol/mMn−Fe2+ ${\text{KD}}_{\mathrm{ol}/\mathrm{m}}^{\mathrm{Mn}-{\mathrm{Fe}}^{2+}}$. The results show that KDol/mMn−Fe2+ ${\text{KD}}_{\mathrm{ol}/\mathrm{m}}^{\mathrm{Mn}-{\mathrm{Fe}}^{2+}}$ = 0.730 ± 0.025 is nearly constant over a realistic range of experimental conditions (temperature, pressure, and melt composition) relevant to basaltic magmas, allowing calculation of melt Fe3+/FeT ratios without the need for any further knowledge of these parameters. A comparison with published data, where melt Fe3+/FeT ratios have been directly measured, demonstrates that our calculation method is as accurate as Mossbauer spectroscopy and XANES techniques, thus providing a very simple and accessible approach to melt Fe3+/FeT ratio estimation. However, it should be noted that the accuracy of this method is critically reliant on: (a) accurate Mn and Fe analyses and (b) olivine‐melt chemical equilibrium. Glasses quenched from relatively undegassed ocean island magmas erupted from volcanoes at Iceland, Hawaii, the Canary Islands, and Erebus have elevated Fe3+/∑Fe ratios compared to glasses quenched from mid-ocean ridge basalts. This has been ascribed to elevated fO2 of their mantle sources, plausibly due to subducted, oxidized near-surface-derived components in their mantle sources. The basaltic magmas from Reunion Island in the Indian ocean have Sr–Nd-Hf-Pb-Os isotopic compositions suggesting that their mantle sources contain little or no subducted near-surface materials and contain the C/FOZO/PREMA mantle component. To constrain the fO2 of the C/FOZO/PREMA mantle component and test the link between oxidized OIB and recycled surface-derived materials in their sources, we measured major and volatile element abundances and Fe3+/∑Fe ratios of naturally glassy, olivine-hosted melt inclusions from Piton de La Fournaise volcano, La Reunion. We conclude that the fO2 of the mantle source of these Reunion lavas is lower than of the mantle sources of primitive, undegassed magmas from Hawaii, Iceland, the Canary Islands, and Mt. Erebus, and indistinguishable from that of the Indian-ocean upper mantle. This finding is consistent with previous suggestions that the source of Reunion lavas (and the C/FOZO/PREMA mantle component) contains little or no recycled materials and with the suggestion that recycled oxidized materials contribute to the high fO2 of some other OIBs, especially those from incompatible-element-enriched mantle sources. Simple mixing models between oxidized melts of EM1 and HIMU components and relatively reduced melts of DMM can explain the isotopic compositions and Fe3+/∑Fe ratios of lavas from Hawaii, Iceland, the Canary Islands, and Mount Erebus; this model can be tested by study of additional OIB magmas, including those rich in the EM2 component. Tungsten (W) deposits are commonly related to the exsolution of magmatic‐hydrothermal fluids from high‐Si granites (SiO2 > 70%). However, whether the W‐related high‐Si granitic magma is produced via partial melting of metasedimentary source rocks or by high degree of fractional crystallization remains controversial. Here we present new geochronological and geochemical data on the intrusions associated with the Lyangar W‐Mo skarn deposit in the Southern Tianshan Orogenic Belt, Uzbekistan. Our new U–Pb zircon age data show that the major intrusion exposed in the region are ca. 280 Ma biotite gabbroic diorite and biotite granite and about 260 Ma porphyritic granite and muscovite porphyritic granite. The molybdenite grains in the skarn rocks and orebodies show weighted Re‐Os ages of 261.4 ± 7.8 Ma and 261.1 ± 3.8 Ma, respectively. In combination with the field contact, we confirm that the muscovite porphyritic granite is genetically related to the W mineralization. The gradual transition from the porphyritic granite to muscovite porphyritic granite, similar mineral assemblages and geochemical variations indicate that they are co‐magmatic, and that the porphyritic granite represents less evolved member. Rhyolite‐MELTS modeling further reinforces that the muscovite porphyritic granites can be produced by high degree of fractional crystallization (~33%, including ~1.2% biotite, ~27% plagioclase, ~2% alkali‐feldspar, ~0.21% Fe‐Ti oxides, and ~2.7% amphibole) of the porphyritic granite magma. On the basis of the positive ƐHf(t) values (+3.03 to +6.02), high‐SiO2 contents and CIPW characters, the porphyritic granite is considered to have formed from dehydration melting at low pH2O of juvenile basaltic source rocks around 16 kbar and 850–1000°C. The lunar magma ocean (LMO) hypothesis predicts that the uppermost mantle (∼60–100 km) is composed of ilmenite-bearing cumulate (IBC), which may have sunk deeply due to gravitational instability. However, the extent to which this process restructured the lunar mantle and influenced mare volcanism remains unclear. Here, we approach this issue by examining pyroxenes in Chang'E-5 (CE5) basalts and petrological modeling. We show that the low Mg# and negative anomalies in Ti and Ta of CE5 basalts cannot be produced by extensive fractionation of peridotite-derived low-Ti basalts, but were most likely formed through partial melting of a shallow (< 100 km) IBC pyroxenite source. This model is also applicable to the ∼3.0 Ga lunar basaltic meteorites. The increasing involvement of IBC sources in young lunar magmas, also revealed by the remote-sensing data, implies an inefficient gravitational restructuring process during the late LMO stage and provides new insights into the thermochemical state of the lunar interior. Cretaceous arc-like, ocean island basalt (OIB)-like, and transitional basalts erupted on the eastern South China Block (SCB), and their petrogenesis was possibly related to the subduction of the Paleo-Pacific plate. However, the detailed petrogenesis in terms of slab subduction, magma sources, and the spatial distribution of the different types in the coastal and inland regions is poorly understood. Here we conduct a comparative study on the Late Cretaceous basalts from both coastal and inland regions. Our compiled age data demonstrate that the basalts in the coastal regions erupted in the period of 104–81 Ma. They show low Nb/La (<0.8), Nb/Y (<0.7), and other typical arc-like signatures, e.g., negative Nb-Ta anomalies, variable enrichment of LILE and LREE, and more radiogenic Sr-Nd isotopic compositions. In contrast, the basalts in the inland regions erupted at 86–71 Ma. They are characterized by high Nb/La (>0.9), slightly negative to positive Nb-Ta anomalies; they mostly possess positive ε Nd (t) values and geochemical features transitional to OIB-like basalts. The systematic geochemical differences may imply the spatial heterogeneity in their magma sources. The three end-member mixing model suggests that the isotopic signatures of arc-like basalts largely resulted from partial melting of the mantle wedge metasomatized by the subducted sediments, while those of transitional basalts likely resulted from depleted mantle source metasomatized by melts from altered oceanic crust (AOC) with minor sediments. We suggest that the retreating of the Paleo-Pacific plate promoted the melting of sediment-hybridized mantle wedge, and then triggered the opening of a slab window and asthenosphere-slab interactions. Volcanism in the Azores is generally accepted to result from the decompression melting in the upper mantle associated with the Azorean plume. Basalts on the island of São Miguel have been previously recognised as having δ18O values lower than MORB with different authors ascribing this low-δ18O signature to either a component within the plume itself or as the result of assimilation of crustal materials at shallow level. Here we assess these contrasting models by using a suite of samples that are both geographically and temporally spread. We find that while low-δ18O mafic magmas (reaching 4.98 ‰) do occur on São Miguel, they are spatially restricted to the Picos fissure system, between the central volcanoes of Sete Cidades and Fogo. Basalts of similar age from outside this restricted region return δ18O values that are similar to MORB. This spatial constraint argues that the source of the observed low-δ18O signature is within the crust rather than a component of the plume. Previous studies on mafic to intermediate rocks of the Picos fissure system have identified the assimilation of broadly syenitic lithologies, which were found as co-erupted lithic clasts at the Fogo volcano and may have δ18O values as low as 2.6 ‰. New petrogeochemical data (lithophile element contents and Sr, Nd and Pb isotope composition) on basalts recovered in the DSDP hole 332B in the 37° N region showed that the generation area of deep tholeiites 3 Ma experienced impact of the Azores plume. This led to the formation of tholeiites weakly enriched in a component compositionally similar to the enriched basalts of the Azores. In turn, sources of basaltic melts of the Azores Archipelago resemble those of enriched alkaline magmas of the Iberian margin, which were formed through melting of continental lithospheric fragments of Eurasia. Two types of olivines with different trace element fractionation trends (Ni, Co, Ca) were identified for the first time in the tholeiites from the DSDP hole 332B at the Azores Triple Junction (ATJ). The compositions of olivines with an elevated Ni content are close to those of the basalts of the Azores Archipelago and indicate the presence of lithospheric mantle fragments in the area of tholeiitic magma generation. The observed global and local compositional mantle heterogeneities could have arisen from the complex geodynamic evolution of the ATJ, the formation of which was accompanied by the impact of the Azores plume near fracture zone, spreading axis jumping, and the involvement of continental lithospheric fragments in melting. A detailed petrological study is presented to constrain the origin of a suite of alkali olivine basalt and hawaiite (>5 wt% MgO) lavas that were erupted in a rift zone within the western Mexican arc (Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt), adjacent to the Sangangüey andesitic stratovolcano, together with more evolved lavas (mugearites and benmoreites; <5 wt% MgO). As previously documented in the literature, the Sangangüey mafic lavas are devoid of any arc geochemical signature, despite their location within an arc. In this study, a new olivine-melt thermometer/hygrometer, based on the partitioning behavior of Ni2+ and Mg2+, was applied to the Sangangüey basalts (SB). The results show that the high-MgO (>9 wt%) SB crystallized at higher temperatures and lower melt-water contents (0-1.3 wt%) compared to high-MgO arc basalts (=5.7 wt% H2O) erupted in the west-central Mexican arc. The Sangangüey lavas with 5-8 wt% MgO display evidence of mixing between high-MgO alkali olivine basalts and low-MgO mugearites. It is proposed that the unique composition of the mugearites (i.e., low SiO2 contents and elevated FeO and TiO2 contents) is the result of partial melting of mafic lower crust driven by the influx of high-MgO intraplate basalts under relatively hot, dry, and reduced conditions. On the basis of crystal textures and compositional zoning patterns, it is shown that both phenocryst growth and magma mixing occurred rapidly, most likely during ascent along fractures, and not slowly during prolonged storage in a crustal magma chamber. The 2018 rift eruption of Kīlauea Volcano presents a superb opportunity to decipher the underlying role of magmatic processes on the behavior and hazards of basaltic volcanoes. Here, we examine the petrogenetic history of the most MgO-rich lavas (~ 7.7–8.7 wt.%) from the voluminous (> 0.8 km3) main phase of this eruption on the volcano's lower East Rift Zone (LERZ). Our results show that these lavas are compositionally homogeneous, but distinct from recent samples of the Puʻu ʻŌʻō eruption on the middle ERZ (MERZ) and the summit lava lake within Halemaʻumaʻu pit crater. The MgO-rich 2018 LERZ lavas have relatively high K2O and TiO2 abundances at a given MgO value, high Nb/Y ratios, and low CaO/TiO2 and Sr/Zr ratios. These observations preclude a simple hypothesis that the collapse of the caldera in 2018 forced magma from the summit reservoir to erupt directly on the LERZ. Instead, the distinctive chemistry of the MgO-rich 2018 LERZ lavas supports a new model of mixing between three components: (1) olivine-controlled magma, derived from the summit reservoir via Puʻu ʻŌʻō, (2) differentiated magma similar to the earliest lavas from the 2018 rift eruption, and (3) olivine. The differentiated magma was stored within the ERZ since the 1960s. The summit-derived magma (~ 91–95%) accumulated downrift of Puʻu ʻŌʻō and mixed with the differentiated magma (~ 5–9%) over ~ 10 years prior to 2018. This process created a large (> 0.8 km3) magma body within the MERZ that was the direct source of the MgO-rich 2018 LERZ lavas. The magma that was removed from the summit reservoir during the 2018 caldera collapse (up to ~ 0.8 km3) remains within the ERZ, along with any leftover magma from the Puʻu ʻŌʻō and 2018 rift eruptions. The summit reservoir has likely been replenished with magma based on recent lava lake activity within Halemaʻumaʻu from December 2020 to May 2021. The southern part of the eastern branch of the East African Rift is characterized by extensive volcanic activity since the late Miocene. In the Crater Highlands, part of the North Tanzanian Divergence zone, effusive and pyroclastic rocks reflect nephelinitic and basaltic compositions that formed between 4·6 and 0·8 Ma. The former are best represented by the Sadiman volcano (4·6–4·0 Ma) and the latter occur in the giant Ngorongoro crater (2·3–2·0 Ma), the Lemagarut volcano (2·4–2·2 Ma) and as a small volcanic field in the Laetoli area (2·3 Ma), where basaltic rocks known as Ogol lavas were erupted through fissures and several cinder cones. Compositionally, they are alkaline basalts with 46·0–47·9 wt% SiO2, 3·0–4·3 wt% of Na2O + K2O, Mg# of 61 to 55, and high Cr and Ni content (450–975 and 165–222 ppm respectively). Detailed textural and compositional analysis of the major minerals (olivine, clinopyroxene, plagioclase and spinel-group minerals) reveals the heterogeneity of the rocks. The primary mineral assemblage that crystallized from the Ogol magmas comprises macro- and microcrysts of olivine (Fo89·5–84·2), Cr-bearing diopside to augite, magnesiochromite–chromitess, magnetite–ulvöspinelss, andesine–oligoclasess and fluorapatite, with glass of phonolitic composition in the groundmass. All samples contain appreciable proportions of xenocrystic minerals of macro- and microcryst size, with large variations in both concentration and mineral populations between samples. Xenocrysts include olivine with reverse zonation (Fo84·1–72·5), rounded and embayed clinopyroxene cores of variable composition, anhedral Cr-free magnetite–ulvöspinelss and embayed oligoclase. These xenocrysts as well as variations in major and trace element contents, 87Sr/86Sr(i) (0·70377–0·70470) and 143Nd/144Nd(i) (0·51246–0·51261) ratios provide evidence of multi-stage magma mixing and mingling between Ogol and adjacent Lemagarut volcano basaltic melts with only very minor contamination by Precambrian granite–gneisses. Elevated alkalinity of Ogol lavas, which positively correlates with isotope ratios, and the presence of xenocrystic green core clinopyroxene, perovskite, schorlomite and titanite indicate additional mixing and mingling with evolved nephelinitic magmas and/or assimilation of nephelinitic Laetolil tuffs or foidolitic rocks related to the Sadiman volcano. Owing to their heterogeneity, estimates on the crystallization conditions for the Ogol rocks are difficult. Nevertheless, clinopyroxene–liquid thermobarometry indicates crystallization temperatures of around 1150–1220 °C and records upper-crustal depths of 3–12 km (1–4 kbar). Despite the fact that Ogol basalts are hybrid rocks that formed under open-system conditions with well-documented mixing and mingling processes, they seem to be the best examples closest to primary basaltic melts within the Crater Highlands. Under the right circumstances, fluid-fluxed crustal melting occurs, as demonstrated by some amphibolite-facies migmatites, but the relatively low temperatures involved make this mode of formation an unsatisfactory model for most silicic magma genesis in arcs. The concept of silicic arc magma formation through either partial melting of metabasalts or fractionation of hydrous basaltic parent magmas should also be treated with scepticism, as both these processes produce sodic and moderately to strongly peraluminous liquids that are chemically unlike most arc silicic rocks and glasses. Furthermore, if the silicic magmas are formed in the deep crust, the fractionation model predicts evolved liquids with extreme H2O contents. Thus, the answer to the question posed in the title is that neither of these two models, in isolation, seems likely for the formation of the majority of the more silicic magmas in arc environments. Given the totality of the evidence, we favour models in which high-T processes dominate. These could include fluid-absent partial melting of older non-basaltic arc crust, entrainment of source-derived crystal cargos, hybridisation with mantle-derived magmas and, in some cases, crystal fractionation of andesitic magmas at shallow crustal levels. Surface deformation accompanying dike intrusions is dominated by uplift and horizontal motion directly related to the intrusions. In some cases, it includes subsidence due to associated magma reservoir deflation. When reservoir deflation is large enough, it can form, or reactivate preexisting, caldera ring‐faults. Ring‐fault reactivation, however, is rarely observed during moderate‐sized eruptions. On February 21, 2015 at Ambrym volcano in Vanuatu, a basaltic dike intrusion produced more than 1 m of coeruptive uplift, as measured by InSAR, synthetic aperture radar correlation, and Multiple Aperture Interferometry. Here, we show that an average of ∼40 cm of slip occurred on a normal caldera ring‐fault during this moderate‐sized (VEI < 3) event, which intruded a volume of ∼24 × 106 m3 and erupted ∼9.3 × 106 m3 of lava (DRE). Using the 3D Mixed Boundary Element Method, we explore the stress change imposed by the opening dike and the depressurizing reservoir on a passive, frictionless fault. Normal fault slip is promoted when stress is transferred from a depressurizing reservoir beneath one of Ambrym's main craters. After estimating magma compressibility, we provide an upper bound on the critical fraction (f = 7%) of magma extracted from the reservoir to trigger fault slip. We infer that broad basaltic calderas may form in part by hundreds of subsidence episodes no greater than a few meters, as a result of magma extraction from the reservoir during moderate‐sized dike intrusions. Calderas form when enough magma leaves a deep reservoir, and the solid rock lid above this reservoir can no longer support its own weight. Caldera faults, or cracks surrounding the reservoir which extend from the reservoir to Earth's surface, form as the lid collapses. Ambrym volcano (Vanuatu) has a 12‐km wide caldera, and researchers propose it formed during an explosive eruption 2,000 years ago. However, in 2018, Ambrym's caldera sunk along caldera faults during a nonexplosive eruption. This observation questions whether an explosive eruption was necessary to form Ambrym's caldera in the first place. Furthermore, in February 2015, an eruption 10 times smaller than in 2018 also caused the ground to sink along caldera faults. Utilizing ground motion data obtained from satellite radar systems to model magma reservoir outflow and fault displacement, we conclude that, in 2015, the ground sank along caldera faults. This sinking is explained by the removal of as little as <7% of the stored magma from the reservoir. We therefore propose that Ambrym's wide caldera may have formed as a result of many frequently occurring medium‐sized eruptions. This challenges the thought that wide calderas mainly form as a result of large eruptions. Inclusions of basaltic melt trapped inside of olivine phenocrysts during igneous crystallization provide a rich, crystal-scale record of magmatic processes ranging from mantle melting to ascent, eruption, and quenching of magma during volcanic eruptions. Melt inclusions are particularly valuable for retaining information on volatiles such as H2O and CO2 that are normally lost by vesiculation and degassing as magma ascends and erupts. However, the record preserved in melt inclusions can be variably obscured by postentrapment processes, and thus melt inclusion research requires careful evaluation of the effects of such processes. Here we review processes by which melt inclusions are trapped and modified after trapping, describe new opportunities for studying the rates of magmatic and volcanic processes over a range of timescales using the kinetics of post-trapping processes, and describe recent developments in the use of volatile contents of melt inclusions to improve our understanding of how volcanoes work. Inclusions of silicate melt (magma) trapped inside of crystals formed by magma crystallization provide a rich, detailed record of what happens beneath volcanoes. These inclusions record information ranging from how magma forms deep inside Earth to its final hours as it ascends to the surface and erupts. The melt inclusion record, however, is complex and hazy because of many processes that modify the inclusions after they become trapped in crystals. Herein, we present new 238U, 232Th, and 40K radionuclide concentrations, density and radiogenic heat production (RHP) data on the Tertiary volcanic rocks outcropping in Borçka, Gumushane and Trabzon regions within the Eastern Pontide Orogenic Belt (EPOB). The mean K values for Trabzon, Borçka and Gümüşhane regions were 2.19 ± 0.87%, 0.90 ± 0.70% and 0.59 ± 0.25%, respectively, the mean U values for Trabzon, Borçka and Gümüşhane regions were 2.12 ± 0.76 ppm and 1.29 ± 0.68 ppm and 0.90 ± 0.32 ppm, and the average Th values were calculated as 6.54 ± 2.32 ppm, 2.49 ± 1.93 ppm and 1.33 ± 0.60 ppm for Trabzon, Borçka and Gümüşhane regions, respectively. The average Th/U values are 3.38 ± 1.48 for the Trabzon region, 2.01 ± 1.22 for the Borçka region, and 1.69 ± 1.09 for the Gümüşhane region. Average U/Th values were calculated as 0.35 ± 0.14, 0.71 ± 0.52 and 0.89 ± 0.72 for the Trabzon, Borçka and Gümüşhane regions, respectively. The RHP values were determined as 1.16 ± 0.35 μ W m - 3 , 0.58 ± 0.33 μ W m - 3 and 0.37 ± 0.10 μ W m - 3 for Trabzon, Borçka and Gümüşhane regions, respectively. The Tertiary aged rocks in the EPOB that we have examined within this study scope have been derived from an enriched mantle, previously metasomatized by fluids derived from subducted slab. The parental magma of Eocene basaltic rocks was contaminated with crustal material during the ascension of the magma through the crust or in the shallow-level crustal magma chambers. The flood basalts of Cretaceous age in southwestern Madagascar range from moderately incompatible-element-enriched, tholeiitic, high-Ti ferrobasalt/basaltic andesite lavas (MgO = 4–5 wt%, Fe 2 O 3t = 14–16 wt%; TiO 2 = 3–3.6 wt%, Nb =16–22 ppm, Zr = 236–269 ppm; La n /Yb n = 7–8) in the southernmost outcrops (Lavanono, Tulear), to incompatible element-poor basaltic dikes (MgO = 4.2–4.9 wt%, Fe 2 O 3t = 12–13 wt%; TiO 2 = 1.6 wt%, Nb = 8–9 ppm, Zr = 90–100 ppm; La n /Yb n = 2.3) around Morondava. The two magma types, at the same degree of magmatic evolution, have markedly different Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic composition (e.g., 87Sr/86Sr i = 0.7121–0.7123, 208Pb/204Pb = 40.9–41.3 for the Tulear-Lavanono lavas vs 87Sr/86Sr i = 0.7033–0.7040, 208Pb/204Pb = 38.7 for the Morondava dikes), that suggest markedly different sources, magmatic history, and variable interplay between Madagascan Precambrian crust and mantle-derived melts, some with a marked enriched mid-ocean ridge basalt-like composition. The geochemical and isotopic data show no involvement of ancient basement crust in the genesis of the Morondava dikes. The Tulear-Lavanono lavas have high Ba/Nb and La/Nb ratios and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic characteristic of magmas that have assimilated crustal material. The chemical and isotopic composition of the contaminated tholeiites of southern Madagascar matches some Late Cretaceous group B1 basalts of the Androy volcanic complex and tholeiites of the Ejeda-Bekily dike swarm, and therefore they could derive from the same feeding system or were fed by similar parental magmas. Basalts from the Southwest Indian Ridge between 39 and 41°E section (anomalous magmatic sectors) with low 206Pb/204Pb and 143Nd/144Nd have been interpreted to contain a component of either recycled lower continental crust and/or subcontinental lithospheric mantle. A detailed review of the isotopic and geochemical compositions of the Mesozoic -and Cenozoic- magmatism in Madagascar, and of the lower and upper crustal domains point out that the sources of the anomalous magmatic sectors of the Southwest Indian Ridge do not contain lower crustal (or lithospheric mantle) components of Madagascan origin. We present undercooling (∆T) experiments aimed at investigating the effect of growth kinetics on the textural and compositional evolution of clinopyroxene crystals growing from a high-K basalt erupted during the 2003 paroxysm of Stromboli volcano (Italy). The experiments were performed at P = 350 MPa, T = 1050–1210 °C, H 2 O melt = 0–3 wt%, and f O 2 = Ni-NiO + 1.5 buffer. An initial stage of supersaturation was imposed to the melt under nominally anhydrous (∆T anh = 10–150 °C) and hydrous (∆T hyd = 25–125 °C) conditions. Afterwards, this supersaturation state was mitigated by melt relaxation phenomena over an annealing time of 24 h. Results show that plagioclase is the liquidus mineral phase of the high-K basalt at ∆T anh = 10 °C and dominates the phase assemblage as the degree of undercooling increases. Conversely, clinopyroxene and spinel co-saturate the melt at ∆T hyd = 25 °C, followed by the subordinate formation of plagioclase. At ∆T anh/hyd ≤ 50 °C, the textural maturation of clinopyroxene produces polyhedral crystals with {−111} (hourglass) and { hk 0} (prism) sectors typical of a layer-by-layer growth mechanism governed by an interface-controlled crystallization regime. At ∆T anh/hyd ≥ 75 °C, the attainment of dendritic and skeletal morphologies testifies to the establishment of diffusion-limited reactions at the crystal-melt interface. 3D reconstructions of synchrotron radiation X-ray microtomographic data reveal a composite growth history for clinopyroxene crystals obtained at ∆T anh/hyd ≥ 95 °C. The early stage of melt supersaturation produces rosette-like structures composed of dendritic branches of clinopyroxene radiating from a common spinel grain, which acts as surface for heterogeneous nucleation. As diffusive relaxation phenomena progress over the annealing time, the elongate dendrites that constitute the inner crystal domain are partially infilled by the melt and develop skeletal overgrowths in the outer domain. With the increasing degree of undercooling, TAl and M1Ti cations are progressively incorporated in the lattice site of clinopyroxene at the expense of TSi and M1Mg cations. Because of the effect of H 2 O melt on the liquidus depression and melt depolymerization, crystals obtained at ∆T hyd are also more enriched in TAl and M1Ti and depleted in TSi and M1Mg than those growing at ∆T anh. The emerging picture is that the morphological and geochemical evolution of clinopyroxene is mutually controlled by the combined effects of melt supersaturation and relaxation phenomena.
