Benefiting from low cost, high tensile strength, chemical stability, and great resistance to temperature, alkaline, and acids, it is a reasonable and valuable technology to use basalt fiber (BF) as an admixture to optimize building materials. So far, the challenge is still to master the engineering performance of BF-reinforced materials, especially poor subgrade soils. To this end, this paper carried out a series of unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests, splitting tensile strength (STS) tests, and scanning environmental microscope (SEM) tests to study the mechanical properties and microstructure mechanism of BF-reinforced subgrade cemented silty sand with different fiber contents and curing times. The aims of this research were: (i) the UCS and STS of basalt fiber reinforced uncemented silty sand (BFUSM) and basalt fiber reinforced cemented silty sand (BFCSM) both increased with the increase of curing time and the strength reached the maximum value after curing for 28 days; (ii) the optimal fiber content was 0.2%, and a good linear correlation existed between UCS and STS; (iii) from the microscopic point of view, the combination of BF and cement could combine the physical action of fiber reinforcement and the chemical action of cement hydration reaction to form a fiber-cement-soil skeleton structure to improve the strength of silty sand and the improvement effect after working together was better than separately incorporated BF or cement; and (iv) the corresponding developed multiple nonlinear regression (MNLR) models which can well predict UCS and STS of BFUSM and BFCSM were established. Basalt fiber has a great advantage on the mechanical properties and durability of reactive powder concrete (RPC) because of its superior mechanical properties and chemical corrosion resistance. In this paper, basalt fiber was adopted to modified RPC, and plain reactive powder concrete (PRPC), basalt fiber reactive powder concrete (BFRPC) and steel fiber reactive powder concrete (SFRPC) were prepared. The mechanical properties and freeze–thaw durability of BFRPC with different basalt fiber contents were tested and compared with PRPC and SFRPC to investigate the effects of basalt fiber contents and fiber type on the mechanical properties and freeze–thaw durability of RPC. Besides, the mass loss rate and compressive strength loss rate of RPC under two freeze–thaw conditions (fresh-water freeze–thaw and chloride-salt freeze–thaw) were tested to evaluate the effects of freeze–thaw conditions on the freeze–thaw durability of RPC. The experiment results showed that the mechanical properties and freeze–thaw resistance of RPC increased as the basalt fiber content increase. Compared with the fresh-water freeze–thaw cycle, the damage of the chloride-salt freeze–thaw cycle on RPC was great. Based on the freeze–thaw experiment results, it was found that SFRPC was sensitive to the corrosion of chloride salts and compared with the steel fiber, the improvement of basalt fiber on the freeze–thaw resistance of RPC was great. Generally, reactive powder concrete (RPC) contains steel fibers often exposed to aggressive environments. Steel fibers in such RPCs are subjected to corrosion in-service, which can significantly change the mechanical properties of the structural components. In this paper, basalt fibers were used to replace steel fibers for preparing a new basalt fiber modified reactive powder concrete (BFRPC). The bending resistance of BFRPC beams was studied, and the crack propagation and failure type of BFRPC beam were monitored by acoustic emission (AE). During the bending test, the failure type of BFRPC was evaluated by AE. Besides, the effects of notch and interfacial damage on the bending resistance and failure type were also studied. During the test, ordinary Reactive Powder Concrete (RPC) without basalt fibers was used as a reference. Results revealed that failure type of the RPC beam and BFRPC beam was mainly caused by shear failure. The notch increased the number of tensile cracks in the beam failure crack, resulting in a decrease in the bending resistance of RPC beam and BFRPC beam. Besides, basalt fiber could improve the toughness and bending resistance of BFRPC beam and increase resistance of the BFRPC beam to notch and interface damage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The workability and mechanical properties of basalt fiber reactive powder concrete (BFRPC) were investigated by univariate analysis. The acoustic emission (AE) was used as a non-destructive technique to reveal the damage characterization of concrete samples of varying basalt fiber content. The fracture stages and modes of specimens during flexural test were determined by AE parameters. The content of silica fume, quartz sand and basalt fiber of 0.4, 1.3 and 10 kg/m3, respectively, was found related to optimal improvements in mechanical strength. As for the characteristics of fracture, it was found that the fiber content was a significant determinant, and the key AE parameters, namely, hits, energy and amplitude, were found related to the damage stage of specimens. Furthermore, rise time (RA) and average frequency (AF) were found to have opposite trends during loading while their variation related to the fracture modes of BFRPC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Basalt fibers are widely used in the modification of concrete materials due to its excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. In this study, the basalt fibers were used to modify reactive powder concrete (RPC). The effect of four mix proportion parameters on the working and mechanical properties of basalt fiber reactive powder concrete (BFRPC) was evaluated by the response surface methodology (RSM). The fluidity, flexural and compressive strength were tested and evaluated. A statistically experimental model indicated that D (the silica fume to cement ratio) was the key of interactions between factors, affecting other factors and controlling properties of BFRPC. The increase in basalt fiber content had a remarkable effect on increasing the flexural and compressive strength when D = 0.2. The addition of basalt fiber obviously improved the mechanical properties of RPC. While when D = 0.4, the decrease of fiber content and the increase of quartz sand content could increase the compressive strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a basalt fiber surface was treated with coupling agent KH-550 and hydrochloric acid, and the basalt fiber polymer-modified active powder concrete (RPC) material was prepared. There are significant differences in material composition and properties between basalt fiber polymer-modified RPC and ordinary concrete, and the structural design calculation (cracking moment and normal section bending bearing capacity) of an ordinary reinforced concrete beam is no longer applicable. Thus, mechanical parameters such as displacement and strain of reinforcement basalt fiber polymer-modified RPC beams subjected to four-point bending were tested. The excellent compressive and tensile strengths of basalt fiber polymer-modified RPC were fully utilized. The tensile strength of basalt fiber polymer-modified RPC in the tensile zone of the beam was considered in the calculation of normal section bending bearing capacity of reinforcement basalt fiber polymer-modified RPC beams. The results showed that the measured values of the cracking moment and ultimate failure bending moment of reinforcement basalt fiber polymer-modified RPC beams were in good agreement with the calculated values. The established formulas for cracking moment and normal section bending bearing capacity can provide references for the design of reinforcement basalt fiber polymer-modified RPC simply supported beam and promote the wide application of basalt fiber polymer-modified RPC materials in practical engineering. Basalt fiber (BF) is a new anti-corrosion and environmentally friendly material, which is expected to delay the corrosion process of steel bars and improve the durability of reinforced reactive powder concrete (RPC). The electrochemical method is a nondestructive testing and real-time monitoring technique used to characterize the corrosion behaviors of steel bars embedded in concrete structures. In this paper, the electrochemical technique was employed to evaluate the corrosion of steel bars embedded in basalt fiber modified reactive powder concrete (BFRPC). Besides, crack and steel-concrete interface damage (SCID) were considered as typical factors that affect steel corrosion in concrete. Thus, both reinforced fiber-free RPC and BFRPC specimens with crack and SCID were prepared for evaluating the steel corrosion behaviors by electrochemical methods. The results revealed that both crack and SCID would aggravate the steel corrosion, and the crack was the major factor that affects the corrosion process. Moreover, the excellent compactness of BFRPC and the bridging action of BF could effectively prevent the concrete cracking and steel corrosion process of concrete. Basalt fiber and crumb rubber, as excellent road material modifiers, have great advantages in improving the mechanical properties and fracture behavior of concrete. Acoustic emission (AE) is a nondestructive testing and real-time monitoring technique used to characterize the fracture behavior of concrete specimens. The object of this paper is to investigate the effects of crumb rubber replacement rate, basalt fiber content and water–binder ratio on the mechanical properties and fracture behavior of crumb rubber basalt fiber concrete (CRBFC) based on orthogonal test. The fracture behavior of a CRBFC specimen under three-point flexural conditions was monitored by AE technology and the relative cumulative hit (RCH) was defined to characterize the internal damage degree of CRBFC. The experimental results showed that, considering the mechanical strength and fracture damage behavior of CRBFC, the optimal crumb rubber replacement rate, basalt fiber content and water–binder ratio are 10%, 2 kg/m3 and 0.46, respectively. In addition, it was found that AE parameters can effectively characterize the fracture behavior of CRBFC. The fracture stages of CRBFC can be divided according to the cumulative AE hits and counts. AE amplitude value can be used as an early warning of CRBFC specimen fracture. Superpave gyratory compaction (SGC) and Marshall compaction methods are essentially designed according to volumetric properties. In spite of the similarity, the optimum asphalt contents (OAC) of the two methods are greatly affected by the laboratory compaction process, which would further influence their performance. This study aims to evaluate the performance of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS)-modified stone mastic asphalt (SMA) with basalt fiber by using SGC and Marshall compaction methods. Basalt fiber was proved to improve and strength the basic properties of SBS-asphalt according to test results of asphalt binder. The effects of SGC and Marshall compaction methods on OAC and volumetric properties, i.e., density, air voids (VA), voids in mineral aggregates (VMA), and voids filled with asphalt (VFA), were evaluated in detail. Finally, the pavement performance of asphalt mixture prepared by SGC and Marshall compaction methods were compared in order to analyze the high-temperature creep, low-temperature splitting, and moisture stability performance. Results showed that the OAC of SGC (~5.70%) was slightly lower than that of Marshall method (5.80%). Furthermore, the pavement performance of SGC specimens were improved to a certain extent compared with Marshall specimens, indicating that SGC has a better compaction effect and mechanical performance. This study focuses on improving the performance of asphalt mixture at low- and high- temperature and analyzing the effect of diatomite and basalt fiber on the performance of the asphalt mixture. Based on the L16(45) orthogonal experimental design (OED), the content of diatomite (D) and basalt fiber (B) and the asphalt-aggregate (A) ratio were selected as contributing factors, and each contributing factor corresponded to four levels. Bulk volume density (γf), volume of air voids (VV), voids filled with asphalt (VFA), Marshall stability (MS) and splitting strength at −10 °C (Sb) were taken as the evaluation indexes. According to the results of the orthogonal experiment, the range analysis and variance analysis were used to study the effect of the diatomite content, basalt fiber content and asphalt-aggregate ratio on the performance of the asphalt mixture, and the grey correlation grade analysis (GCGA) was used to obtain the optimal mixing scheme. Furthermore, the performance tests were conducted to evaluate the performance improvement of asphalt mixtures with diatomite and basalt fibers, and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests were carried out to analyze the mechanism of diatomite and basalt fibers in asphalt mixtures. The results revealed that the addition of diatomite and basalt fiber can significantly increase the VV of asphalt mixture, and reduce γf and VFA; the optimal performance of the asphalt mixture at high- and low-temperature are achieved with 14% diatomite, 0.32% basalt fibers and 5.45% asphalt-aggregate ratio.
