BACKGROUND: The main risk factors reported for the development of skin cancer are exposure to UVB radiation, white phototypes of skin, infection by human papilloma virus (HPV) and the presence of certain syndromes and genetic disorders. OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of skin cancer in a histopathological diagnosis center in the city of Durango, Mexico. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A retrospective and descriptive study was carried out in a histopathological diagnosis center of the city of Durango from 2008 to 2017, in which all positive cases of skin cancer confirmed with histopathological diagnosis were analyzed. Cases were corroborated morphologically with H & E staining by two previously standardized pathologists. RESULTS: Of the total of positive cases to malignancy 182 corresponded to skin cancer (0.8%), of these, 95 cases were identified as basal cell carcinoma, 58 as squamous cell carcinoma, 24 cases corresponded to melanomas and 5 cases as other histological subtypes; the main age was 68.5 years old, the most affected sex was the female with 54.1% and the anatomical region with the highest number of cases was head and neck region. CONCLUSION: Knowing the frequency of this type of malignant neoplasms in a given population of Durango, Durango city, allows establishing the epidemiological basis to develop future clinical-pathological investigations.
