6. Using the boundary elements approach to solve the problems of liquid filtration via the dam

The work deals with the method and programs to calculate the liquid filtration via the dam, with allowing for the events of their possible damage. On the base of the boundary elements approach the method to calculate the flow of a liquid via the dam in the presence of a watertight fitting member was conducted. Using the numeric test, the free boundary position at the liquid filtration via the dam with the defected upper and lower basins was received and provisional analysis with the outcomes, received in the event of the defect of the upper dam basin only, was conducted. The primary free surface position has been determined arbitrarily. The boundary elements disposition drawing for the soil unit at the stream with the free area via the barrage with the defected upper (at the top) and lower barrage basins has been developed with allowing for reaching the optimal computing time. The boundary elements disposition drawing for the soil unit at the stream with the free area via the barrage with the defected upper (in the middle) and lower dam basins has been developed for the same considerations. The application was created in Delphi 7 visual programming environment. The main calculated outcomes were compared for the potential at the stream with the free area via the barrage with the defected only upper basin made earlier and for the barrage with the defected upper and lower basins. The outcomes show that in the event with the upper dam basin defect there is more wetting of the soil than in the event with the defect of both dam basins. It can be explained by the fact that the liquid stream at the defect lower dam basin will be faster and wetting of the soil will be less. The results of submitted paper can be useful in engineering practice for designing the soil dams.

The monitoring of dams provides a series of chronological measurements from different devices installed in the structure. These measurements must be analyzed in order to determine the behavior of the dam with respect to the factors (hydrostatic pressure, temperature, aging, etc.) influencing its stability. The work presented in this article, concerns the analysis of a set of pendular measurements (280 measurements approximately), spread over a period of 16 years (from September 1, 2003 to September 30, 2019), of the Beni-Haroun dam (Wilaya of Mila-Algeria) using the HST model (Hydrostatic, Seasonal, Temporal). The application of the HST model on these measurements allowed to quantify the displacements relative to the effects (hydrostatic, seasonal and time) on the one hand and to separate the reversible effects (hydrostatic and seasonal effects) from the irreversible effect (time) by the calculation of the corrected displacements on the other hand. The displacements due to the hydrostatic effect are more important (up to 14 mm) than those due to the other effects (not exceeding 5 mm). In order to make a judgment on the behavior of the dam, interpretation indicators were calculated for each effect. The values obtained are insignificant (of the order of a thousandth), which means that none of the three effects presents a risk for the stability of the structure (indicators below unity). The Mandara Mountains constitute a particular morphological unit in the west of the Far North region of Cameroon. This uniqueness compared to the border plains is linked to its altitudinal, geological, geomorphological and pedological specificities. Similar to a set of rocky ledges with thin regosolic and lithosolic surface formations that do not exist in places, this sector is very often apprehended as a hostile framework in terms of water conservation, since the populations who live there face a glaring problem. of his poverty in the dry season. As this water problem is based on the climatic characteristics marked by droughts, the morpho-pedological parameters characterized by the dissection of the relief and the porosity of the soils are very often associated with it. Its altitude overlooks all the neighboring plains with an average drop of nearly 500 m. This part characterized by steep slopes, valleys compartmentalizing the entire landscape, the curvilinear topography, the rocky substratum flush with the surface and very porous soils prove to be limits to natural retention (without assistance) in surface water. Paradoxically, thanks to this strong dissection of the relief with important valleys for the base of the healthy massif, little covered by permeable alterites and the presence of basic materials necessary for the construction of dams, this sector could offer possibilities for the development of artificial retention of surface water necessary in this environment marked by a persistent dry season (7 months). In order to achieve the objective which is to show the morphostructural and pedological capacity of the Mandara Mountains to retain surface water in this semi-arid mountainous environment with rocky substratum, the search for secondary and primary data and laboratory analyzes have been carried out. At the end of this work, it emerges that the previously restrictive factors without human intervention have a positive aspect that can turn into an advantage for the construction of surface water retention structures already very present in this part. In Morocco, artificial reservoirs often constitute the principal source of water supply. Yet, they faced natural risks such as the siltation, this phenomenon is increasing in all dams around the world. As a result, governments are constantly looking for innovative solutions and encourages studies in this field. In this perspective, we are trying to valorize the mud from the reservoir of one of the oldest and most important dams in Morocco; the Lalla Takerkoust dam, which is suffering from high sedimentation rates. This study is subdivided into two parts, a social part where we conducted questionnaire surveys, and a technical part, where we carried out a series of physicochemical and mechanical analyses on sediment samples collected from the Lalla Takerkoust reservoir. The results obtained show that the sediments of the studied reservoir can be used in several domains, which the local population can use to improve their living standards by setting up social enterprises., Au Maroc, les réservoirs artificiels constituent souvent la principale source d'approvisionnement en eau. Pourtant, ils sont confrontés à des risques naturels tels que l'envasement, ce phénomène étant en augmentation dans tous les barrages du monde. Par conséquent, les gouvernements sont constamment à la recherche de solutions innovantes et encouragent les études dans ce domaine. Dans cette optique, nous essayons de valoriser les boues du réservoir de l'un des plus anciens et des plus importants barrages du Maroc ; le barrage de Lalla Takerkoust, qui souffre d'un fort taux de sédimentation. Cette étude est subdivisée en deux parties, une partie sociale où nous avons mené des enquêtes par questionnaire, et une partie technique, où nous avons effectué une série d'analyses physico-chimiques et mécaniques sur des échantillons de sédiments prélevés dans le réservoir de Lalla Takerkoust. Les résultats obtenus montrent que les sédiments du réservoir étudié peuvent être utilisés dans plusieurs domaines, que la population locale peut utiliser pour améliorer son niveau de vie en créant des entreprises sociales.

21. A critical review of the effect of water storage reservoirs on organic matter decomposition in rivers.

Organic matter decomposition is vital in sustaining river food webs. However, little is known about the effect of water storage reservoirs on organic matter decomposition in rivers. In this paper, we reviewed and analyzed 37 studies that investigated the effect of man-made reservoirs on organic matter decomposition in rivers. Most studies focused on decomposition of tree leaf litter (54.1%) and macrophytes litter (43.2%), while fewer studies evaluated decomposition of wood (2.7%). Based on qualitative analysis, the effect of small weirs on organic matter decomposition is local and the effect on most habitat variables is minimal. Mean effect sizes (Hedges' g) for organic matter decomposition were −1.98 for small weirs, −1.31 for small reservoirs, and −0.66 for large reservoirs. This review demonstrates that, in general, reservoirs have a negative effect on litter decomposition. Litter decomposition, an important ecosystem process, is sensitive to impacts of reservoirs in different types of rivers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Joseph-Samson Dam is located on the St. Charles River near the confluence with the St. Lawrence River in the Lower Town of Quebec City. The dam creates a 3.7 km long reservoir, with a very popular linear park running alongside. This water body has esthetic value and allows recreational boating. With its anti-tidal gates, the dam protects from flooding during very high spring tides in the St. Lawrence. However, the dam has completely changed the formerly natural estuary into a channel with sedimentation formed from the organic and inorganic sediment influx coming from the semi-urban, urban and forest watershed. Highly productive fish runs up the St. Charles are a thing of the past and significant reduction in dissolved oxygen is now often observed. Furthermore, the dam may actually increase the risk of flooding in the Lower Town under high flows. One-dimensional simulations (HEC-RAS) were performed to assess the dam's impact on flood risks for different bottom gate settings and two-dimensional simulations (RIVER 2D) were performed to assess the dam's impact on river velocities and sedimentation processes. Iconic or linguistic representations of catastrophes are multiplying nowadays. They present themselves as emblematic figures of an obsession with collapse and refer to the feeling of increased vulnerability of the planet. The causes of the disasters depicted may be partly "natural" and partly "artificial", since it is difficult today to make a clear distinction between these categories. It will be more a question here of analyzing the way in which photographers represent the consequences of these disasters: by "naturalizing" them or by inscribing them in a story., Les représentations iconiques ou langagières de catastrophes se multiplient de nos jours. Elles se présentent comme les figures emblématiques d'une hantise de l'effondrement et renvoient au sentiment d'une vulnérabilité accrue de la planète. Les causes des désastres mis en image peuvent être pour partie « naturels » et pour partie « artificiels », puisqu'il est aujourd'hui difficile d'opérer une claire distinction entre ces catégories. Um dos grandes objetivos da ecologia é analisar a influência dos impactos antrópicos sobre a diversidade biológica. Dentro desse contexto, a análise de diversidade beta pode ser considerada uma importante ferramenta para medir o quanto os impactos ambientais podem modificar a composição de espécies, tanto na escala espacial quanto na escala temporal. Essa medida é útil por permitir comparar os períodos antes e depois do impacto, em um mesmo local. Tendo em vista o grande número de estudos que utilizaram a análise da diversidade beta para mensurar algum tipo de impacto ambiental, o primeiro capítulo deste trabalho teve o objetivo principal de realizar uma revisão sistemática sobre a literatura existente sobre o tema. Esse trabalho demonstrou que o Brasil é o terceiro país que mais publicou sobre o tema e que as plantas, seguido pelos peixes, são os organismos mais estudados. Além disso, essa revisão demonstrou que, na maior parte das pesquisas, a medida de diversidade beta diminuiu após o impacto, ou seja, ocorreu a homogeneização biótica após o impacto. O trabalho também sugere algumas lacunas que precisam ser preenchidas. No segundo capítulo, foi realizado um estudo de caso sobre a variação temporal da comunidade zooplanctônica em um trecho do rio Tocantins, após a construção de uma Usina Hidrelétrica, abrangendo um período de 12 anos. Nesse estudo, a diversidade beta foi calculada através do método proposto por Legendre (2019), que permite identificar o ganho e a perda de espécies na área de estudo. Ao comparar os períodos antes e depois da formação do reservatório, o ganho de espécies foi superior à perda devido, principalmente, à transformação do ambiente lótico para lêntico, o que foi o fator principal para os elevados valores de diversidade beta. Portanto, os dois capítulos dessa dissertação demonstraram a ampla utilização dos índices de diversidade beta e a importância dessa ferramenta na análise de impactos ambientais. One of the goals of ecology is to analyze the influence of anthropogenic impacts on biological diversity. Beta diversity analysis can be considered an important tool to measure how environmental impacts can modify species composition, both in spatial and temporal scales. This measure is useful because it allows comparing the periods before and after the impact. Considering the large number of studies using beta diversity to measure some type of environmental impact, the first chapter of this work had the main objective of conducting a systematic review of the existing literature on the subject. This work showed that Brazil is the third country that has published the most on the subject. Besides, plants, followed by fish, are the most studied organisms. This review also demonstrated that, in most studies, the measure of beta diversity decreased after impact. In other words, biotic homogenization occurred after impact. The work also suggests some gaps that need to be filled. In the second chapter, a case study was carried out on the temporal variation of the zooplankton community in a stretch of the Tocantins River, after the construction of a hydroelectric plant, covering a period of 12 years. In this study, beta diversity was calculated using the method proposed by Legendre (2019), which allows identifying the gain and loss of species in the study area. When comparing the periods before and after the formation of the reservoir, the gain of species was greater than the loss. Probably the main factor responsible for the high values of beta diversity was the transformation of lotic to lentic environment. Therefore, the two chapters of this dissertation demonstrated the wide use of beta diversity indices and the importance of this tool in the analysis of environmental impacts. L’Orne a subi de multiples modifications hydromorphologiques au cours du XXe siècle, en relation avec l’activité sidérurgique implantée dans sa vallée aval. À Moyeuvre-Grande, le barrage de Beth, construit en 1958, provoque notamment une zone de remous de 4,5 km de longueur, présentant localement des bancs alluviaux ainsi que des dépôts solides fortement contaminés par l’activité industrielle passée. Une étude en cours vise à déterminer la remobilisation de ces dépôts pollués dans les conditions hydrologiques actuelles et dans une perspective de suppression du barrage. Ce travail étudie spécifiquement l’hydrodynamisme de l’Orne dans la zone de ralentissement provoqué par le barrage. La crue biennale du 1er juin 2016 est utilisée comme événement de référence ; son débit maximal à 137 m³/s correspond localement au débit à pleins bords. L'étude morphométrique de deux sites avec banc sédimentaire espacés de 450 m a permis de calculer la puissance spécifique et la contrainte tractrice du cours d’eau, couplées à des mesures granulométriques. La puissance spécifique (environ 30 W/m²) et les contraintes tractrices moyennes (entre 15 et 22 N/m²) montrent l’assez faible énergie hydrodynamique du cours d’eau qui peut toutefois mobiliser des sédiments de taille centimétrique par charriage et du sable moyen à grossier en suspension, lors d’une crue biennale. Ces premiers résultats serviront la modélisation hydraulique qui sera faite à proximité du barrage afin de déterminer les processus d’ablation qui pourraient s’y produire suite à l’ouverture des vannes, puis à la suppression annoncée de l’ouvrage. Hydromorphological changes were applied to the Orne River during the 20th century to suit the demands of the steel industries. In the downstream region of the Orne valley, near Moyeuvre-Grande, the Beth Dam constructed in 1958 causes a 4.5 km long backwater zone rich in highly contaminated waste due to the ancient steel making activity. An ongoing study aims to determine the remobilization of these polluted deposits in the current hydrological conditions. Consequently, improved management plans can be proposed before the dam will be removed. This work specifically studies the hydrodynamic of the Orne River in the upstream backwater zone caused by the Beth Dam. The biennial flood of June 1st 2016 serves as a reference; its maximum flow rate of 137 m³/s corresponds to the bankfull discharge. Morphometric study performed on river bars of two separate 450 m sites allowed to calculate the unit stream power and the shear stress of the river, coupled with grain size measurements. The calculated unit stream power (about 30 W/m²) and mean shear stresses (between 15 and 22 N/m²) reveal a rather low hydrodynamic energy of the river that can however mobilize centimetric sediments via bed load transport and medium to coarse sands via suspension during a biennial flood. These results are a starting point for future hydraulic modelling that will be carried out near the Beth Dam. The findings will determine the possible ablation processes caused by the opening of the dam gates as well as dam removal.

International audience; This article focuses on opposing and abandoning the Gordon-below-Franklin dam project (Tasmania, Australia). The project had been put forward by the HydroElectric Commission of Tasmania towards the end of the 1970s. The article analyses more specifically how the hydraulic fix which the project represents is debated in the public sphere and how the utility and the efficiency of the technical infrastructure is contested. Abandoning the hydraulic infrastructure project leads to the redefinition of its hydrocracy and plays a role in the disintegration of a technical hydrosocial cycle. Nevertheless, a green hydrosocial cycle is only partially produced during and after the controversy.; Cet article s'intéresse à la contestation et à l'abandon d'un projet de barrage, le projet Gordon-below-Franklin (Tasmanie, Australie) que tente de poursuivre une institution publique, l'Hydro-Electric Commission of Tasmania, de la fin des années 1970 jusqu'en 1983. Entre 2004 et 2012, les conditions d’un « déplacement forcé » de populations rurales lié à l’émergence d’un barrage en Inde centrale avaient été étudiées. De nouvelles enquêtes menées depuis 2014 en investiguent les conséquences et explorent les espaces partiellement submergés afin de mettre en évidence les logiques sociospatiales qu’objectivent les éléments du « nouveau » paysage quotidien. Sont ici analysés les effets des transformations paysagères induites par le barrage de Gosikhurd : comment celles-ci dévoilent les enjeux d’un espace social relocalisé composé de castes ? Between 2004 and 2012, the conditions of a "forced displacement" of rural populations linked to the construction of a dam in central India were studied. New studies conducted since 2014 have analysed the consequences and explored partially submerged areas to highlight the socio-spatial approaches embodied by elements of the "new" landscape as experienced daily. This article analyses the effects of the transformations in the landscape brought about by the Gosikhurd dam and how they bring to light issues in the relocation of a social environment composed of castes.

In the semi-arid Mediterranean climate of the Maghreb region, Algeria, the intensity and high variability of rainfall contribute to soil erosion that feeds the sediment load of the wadis, which, in turn, is a factor in the rapid silting-up of reservoirs. The temporal variability of solid and liquid flows, an important characteristic in Mediterranean regions, is the subject of this research, which focuses on the Wadi Bouhamdane in eastern Algeria. Since December 1987, the wadi flows—recorded by the gauging station (1105 km2) since September 1969—have been regulated by the Hammam Debagh Dam, located immediately upstream of the station (1070 km2). The study involved the treatment of a long time series of suspended sediment concentration and water flow data, together with daily water discharge data recorded at the dam site. A power function describing the relationship between the instantaneous suspended sediment loads and the instantaneous water flow was used to estimate daily suspended sediment discharge of two series (1969–1987 and 1995–2010), recorded, respectively, at the outlet of the basin (gauging station) and at the dam site. The results show a moderate mean annual specific suspended sediment flux (257 t km−2year−1), but high inter-annual variability characterizes the specific suspended sediment (TSS = 0.5 and 1396 t km−2year−1in 1996/97 and 2004/05, respectively), which increases significantly in the season of high streamflow. Thus, floods generate large quantities of sediment that represent a significant proportion of the annual total and monthly specific degradation throughout the basin. The comparative approach shows that the sediment flux estimated by concentration measurements at the wadi gauging station (0.22–0.29 hm3year−1) does not represent the entire volume of silting of the dam (0.98 hm3year−1on average), identified using bathymetry. The article follows the evolution of the history and transformation of the French civil engineering consulting firm Coyne et Bellier founded in 1947 by French civil engineers André Coyne and Jean Bellier. It is noted that the firm was renamed Tractebel Engineering France on January 5, 2009. A chronology and points of references which begin in 1928 in the Dordogne River Valley of France are included. The mobilization of hydroelectric resources in the valley at the Éguzon dam in 1926 and some of the firm's international projects including the Kariba Dam (Zambia and Zimbabwe) are discussed.

Abstract: Nutrient distribution and fluxes into and from dams and into coastal waters from three rivers (NE Algeria) were assessed during a one-year period in three stations for each river: at the entrance and the exit of dam and at the outlet. The main characteristics of the rivers were the high levels of NH4 and PO4, even in dam entrances, contrarily to SiO4 levels that are still low upstream the dams. From the inorganic nutrient incoming fluxes, the dams trapped annually 42 to 93%, depending on the nutrient, but released in great levels dissolved organic forms at their exits. At catchment scale, dissolved nitrogen loadings reach 338 kg/km2/yr, in which the organic fraction forms up to 34%; while those of dissolved phosphorus reach 172 kg/km2/yr, with a great organic fraction. The Si:N ratios decreased while N:P ratios increased at river outlets, indicating large inputs of N over P in the lower catchments. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In terms of legislation, it is necessary to propose new laws, decrees and regulations that are consistent with our reality, as opposed to a large batch of inapplicable legal instruments obsolete and difficult to understand. The construction of the dam has produced Poilão environmental, socio-economic impacts and irrigation. It is to find a model that fits the reality of Cape Verde and Santiago Island, involving all partners for the sustainable management of the valley of Ribeira Seca and that can serve as an example to future to build dams. En Afrique tropicale, de nombreuses études sur la variabilité climatique montrent qu'une tendance à la sécheresse s'est manifestée à partir de la fin des années 1960. Cette sécheresse a affecté aussi l'hydrosystème Mono-Couffo, en Afrique de l'Ouest, avec une persistance remarquable qui s'est répercutée sur les écoulements. Depuis 1988, avec la mise en eau du barrage de Nangbéto, qui coïncide avec une légère reprise pluviométrique dans les années 1990, on assiste à une modification du régime hydrologique du Mono à Athiémé. Les méthodes statistiques appliquées aux données mensuelles de pluie et débit de la période 1961–2000 ont permis de constater que les déficits pluviométriques des décennies 1970 et 1980 ont engendré des déficits de l'écoulement. Mais, avec la légère reprise pluviométrique (2%) de 1988 à 2000, on assiste à un excédent d'écoulement de 37% sur le Mono à Athiémé à régime « artificiel » depuis 1988; et, par contre, pas d'excédent (0,1%) sur le Couffo à Lanta à régime « naturel ». Un modele hydrologique global a ete cale sur des episodes pluvieux de duree tres variable (de un a plus de dix jours). Les episodes pris en compte sont ceux qui sont encadres par au moins un jour sec et ne provoquant pas de deversement du barrage. L'entree de ce modele comprend la pluie moyenne du bassin versant et l'indice des precipitations anterieures de Kohler & Linsley. Les expressions du modele hydrologique du debut et au cours de la saison humide, selon un seuil du cumul des pluies de la saison depuis le debut de l'automne, sont de la forme non lineaire polynomiale du second ordre. Le modele s'est montre performant dans l'evaluation de la lame ruisselee malgre le faible nombre de postes pluviometriques (un) pour la taille du bassin versant de 48 km2. L'absence d'autres postes pluviometriques sur le bassin versant n'a pas permis d'etudier la precision du modele en considerant une pluie moyenne sur le bassin versant au lieu de la pluie uniquement au site du Barrage Ghezala. We address the challenging and economically important problem of seismic hazard estimation at low probabilities for stable cratonic regions such as central Canada which are characterized by very low seismicity rates. At low probabilities, large uncertainties in the seismicity rates result in calculated seismic hazards that are not negligible for practical purposes and may have significant implications for design and retrofit of critical structures such as hydroelectric and tailings dams. We examine the statistics of earthquake magnitude recurrence in such regions and their implications for hazard estimates at low probabilities. Recommendations for low-probability ground motions are provided that are related to the design life of the facilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study presents the results of a pilot project, for the Saint-François and Aylmer lakes located in southern Quebec, aimed at developing a method to evaluate the adaptability of a current dam management plan to global climate changes. The hydrological simulations computed using available climate scenarios indicated modifications in annual water yields, from a 13% increase to a 30% decrease, and earlier spring floods. Peak flows, winter and summer low flows, and the level of increase in water yields vary depending on the studied climate scenario. The simulation of the current management plan shows that climate changes will affect the current trade-off between the various management objectives of the reservoirs. Adaptation solutions to the current management plan appeared to be feasible, but no unique solution applicable to all climate scenarios was found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quebec's Dam Safety Act demands a safety assessment for all dams, whatever their capacity. The capacity only affects the detail level of the study to qualify the consequences of a potential dam failure, and thus determine the dam's classification. In practical terms, it is difficult to qualify the consequences of a failure flood if a complete hydraulic calculation of the failure flood is not performed. If consequences are not significant, this complicated specialized work can be deemed unnecessary by the dam owner, who normally has to defray the cost. This paper compares results of a complete dynamic calculation to those of three "simplified" methods. It shows, in two specific cases, that flow depth errors are significant, even after eliminating the greater part of this error generated by the discharge evaluation at the breach. The paper also shows that work involved when using "simplified" methods is not significantly decreased with relation to the work required for the complete calculation when time comes to interpret the data to assess correctly the consequences of a possible dam failure.
